Local Life
Back-to-School Blues? Even though the schooldays of my kids are a distant memory, when the school holidays end it always feels like the end of a chapter. The onset of September means that the dreaded traffic queues grow, most of us have no holidays left to look forward to and festive stock starts appearing in the supermarket as retailers determinedly steamroller us along towards a Christmas mind-set. But let’s take a moment to caress the dying embers of summer and enjoy what one of the most underrated months of the year has to offer; September usually offers a chance to enjoy mild weather, light evenings and colours in the garden. Amongst my favourite places to go in September are the village shows, many of which have their roots in the whole celebration of harvest, and now are often a delightful mixture of enthusiastic and talented residents sharing with others their love for crafts, arts, photography, baking, and horticulture. There are more details on local activities in the local area in our events2go section on pages 44-47. Remember, if you have a local business and you’d like to promote that business to over 26,000 homes in the West Lancashire area then please give us a call on 01695 627999. Our West Lancashire title is delivered via Royal Mail so we are able to promote your business into even the most rural corners of West Lancashire and have packages to suit businesses of all shapes and sizes. See you next time

Inspiring Women Tarleton’s Women’s Institute are appealing for new members to join their organisation. The group was formed in 1951 and meets at 7.30pm on the third Thursday of the month at Tarleton CofE School Hall. The meetings consist of a speaker, refreshments and general socialising with other members. In addition to the monthly meetings, the Tarleton Women’s Institute also has sub groups who meet independently, and these include a craft group, a walking group, a dining group and a theatre and shows group. Thanks to a grant from the Co-operative Community Fund, the group is currently exploring the history,
heritage and culture of Lancashire and recently visited Lancaster Castle where they enjoyed a guided tour around the castle and spoke to actors portraying soldiers of the Cheshire Regiment in the First World War. The visit was on World Wide Knit in Public Day, so the members marked the occasion by knitting in the Castle grounds. The group plans to visit Houghton Tower later in the year as part of the project. Other activities enjoyed by members, sometimes with neighbouring WI groups, are fashion shows, bowling afternoons, quizzes, helping with the upkeep of ‘their’ garden in Tarleton and they are currently teaching the local cub scout group how to knit so that they can make blankets to help the homeless. The WI is run by a nine strong committee and the group will always offer a warm welcome to visitors. You can visit three meetings before deciding if you would like to join the organisation. The next meeting is 20th September at 7.30pm at Tarleton CofE School Hall.
War Story Historical narrator Martin Jones, who presents the illustrated story of John Westhead, the Newburgh village blacksmith, who fought and was killed in France in the First World War, would like to hear from any local organisations who are interested in hearing the talk in the run up to the anniversary of the end of the war. The Man Who Shod War Horses is the pre and post war story of John and his family, and includes the
family history, John’s time in France and how the family coped after his death. The talk lasts up to one hour and contains many original letters and documents which can be viewed. These documents have been described as ‘Gold Dust’ by a local WW1 historian and an expert on the Antiques Roadshow. For further information and to arrange a presentation contact Martin Jones 07758310382 or email jonesmartin566@gmail.com.

Beware of the Bugs There are just a few days of the summer holiday left to have a bug-filled adventure at Martin Mere. The popular wetland centre, in Fish Lane near Burscough, has been taken over this summer by six giant Bionic Bugs and if you visit before Sunday 2 September you can meet a 6ft long dragonfly, a 6ft wingspan butterfly, an ant, a grasshopper and a 4ft buzzing bee - all brought to life with state of the art animatronics and sound effects. Centre Manager, Nick Brooks, said: “In 2017, Martin Mere received the Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Bug Hotel, standing at a massive 18.36 cubic metres, so it is no surprise that giant bugs were going to attempt to move in – it’s going to be a buzzing day out for the whole family.”
can get a special bionic bug sticker at the daily award ceremony at 3.30pm. For further information and a full list of activities visit wwt.org.uk/bionicbugs.
Grab your free bug book when you arrive, and start collecting stickers for doing eight bug-related activities and if you collect six or more stickers, you

Declutter your By Tracey Anderson
life
It’s that time of year when we get the urge to clear up the clutter. If you can’t lay your hands on items you need because they’re buried under piles of junk; if you find yourself thinking, “I can’t throw this away, it might come in useful one day,” you’re probably a clutter-victim. Californian blogger Dave Bruno wrote The 100 Thing Challenge. He set himself a year-long experimental task of reducing his belongings to 100 items. It would be tough for most of us to emulate Bruno exactly, but he has a point. Sometimes it’s good to let go. If you’re ready to de-clutter, then we have a few simple tips. Deal with one room at a time - the task will seem less daunting. Stick with that room until it’s finished. Choose a nice day - Take the room contents outside. Psychologically it’s easier to sort and let go if you’re one step removed. It’s also less likely that the clutter will make it back inside. Sort everything into three piles - Label them ‘dump’, ‘donate’ and ‘keep’. Be realistic: if the item in question hasn’t been used for over a year it is unlikely you will ever use it. Deal with the dump and donate piles - Do this before anything comes back into the house. It’s much harder to mess up your good work if the stuff is physically gone. Sort and label - Place the remaining items in clearly
labelled boxes. Make sure there is one temporary box to house items which really belong in another room. As each room is sorted those items can be replaced, and other misplaced items can be housed there while the de-cluttering process continues. Replace everything that remains - The maxim ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is a good one. Keep small items in clear plastic boxes and store them in cupboards or wardrobes. When you’re done, instigate a ‘one thing in: one thing out’ rule. It will make you think twice about acquiring something if you know something else must go. Finally, once a week, take two bags and go through your home. One bag is for rubbish, the other for items in the wrong place. When you’ve finished throw the rubbish away and replace the misplaced items. Follow these small steps and you too can de-clutter your life.

Flying High Wouldn’t it be wonderful to get a birds-eye view of autumn’s fabulous colours? Well that’s exactly what you get when you take a hot air balloon flight. I joined a group of excited passengers at the launch point and listened to the pilot’s safety briefing. Behind him, the balloon’s envelope was being filled with air using an enormous fan. When the shout to board came, we moved rapidly to clamber into the then vertical basket. The balloon was unsecured and we began to lift off. As we headed to heights of up to 3000 feet, we were treated to a bird’s eye view of the countryside below. The whole landscape stretched before us: fields, trees, livestock in the fields, streams and lakes. It was a beautiful sight. The huge balloon moved silently across the sky, the calm only interrupted by the passengers’ conversation and the periodic blast of the burners injecting the spell-binding fire into the belly of the balloon. Our lovely pilot cheerfully answered all our questions, pointed out landmarks, and told us about the skill of ballooning. Travel is so gentle because the balloon is moving at the same speed as the wind, and even the most apprehensive passenger soon relaxed and admired the views. When it was time for our flight to end, the pilot descended slowly. I had expected a jerky landing, but the contact of the basket with the ground slowed the progress of the balloon and brought it to a halt quite gently, within a couple of bounces. The basket slowly tilted on its side as it came to rest in a field and the balloon began to deflate in the breeze. If you’re interested in trying hot air ballooning,
some preliminary research on the internet reveals that Virgin Balloon Flights (virginballoonflights. co.uk) operate from Crook O’Lune near Lancaster and also from the Airport and Heliport in Eccles near Manchester. Local flights are available from Suzanna Balloons (hot-air-balloons.co.uk), based in Bretherton, near Croston. Prices vary but range from approximately £115-£145 per person. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Take Control of Your
Inbox! By Lisa Calder
‘Why do you have 9632 emails in your inbox?’ I looked at my husband, ‘Um...is that a lot? How many are in your inbox?’ ‘About twenty,’ he replied. I looked at my inbox. There were emails I had meant to deal with; emails from clients and the kids’ schools with information I needed; there were time-sensitive offers I’d never got around to investigating; endless updates from the social media platforms, and the rest I’d kept just in case, of what I’m not entirely sure. I wondered idly if there was such a thing as being an email hoarder. I clearly had a problem and I needed to act so I began to sift through the backlog. An hour later I’d made little progress. ‘Just delete the lot,’ said my husband. ‘It’ll be like ripping off a plaster.’ Could I do that? It was tempting. But I paused. I couldn’t. I did have a problem! I decided to compromise. I kept the last month’s emails and deleted everything else. EVERYTHING.
WOW, it felt liberating. I looked at my almostempty inbox. It felt so good I quickly went through the month’s worth of emails I’d kept, and deleted anything I knew I’d never get around to answering. But even whilst I was doing this five new emails arrived and in the back of my mind I knew how easily those five would become fifty...and then five thousand. I needed to futureproof my inbox! I decided I’d set aside fifteen minutes twice a day to deal with email. If I needed to save information I would file it in a folder on my laptop. Then once a month I would quickly go through the inbox and delete anything else that I knew would never be actioned. To be honest that’s been the hardest part. I found it useful to cap my emails at 50 and I use an email system to filter school emails into a separate inbox, so I can see at a glance when there’s an inset day or a ‘Dress like a Roman’ day! Your system might have to be different. The trick is to invent one to suit your own routine. I feel more in control and organised now I’m on top of my inbox. Now to tackle that cupboard under the stairs!

Write on An Ormskirk poet is urging other writers to share their creative talents. Paul Le Marinel is a member of the Skelmersdale Writers Group and is keen for other upcoming writers to get involved in the group. The 39-year-old has been writing poetry for six years and has been a member of the group for a couple of months. “The group has influenced me a lot, with regards to approaches and methods of writing, whilst also having more of an open mind to not just write spiritual poems but poems of different other aspects, such as nature and history,” said Paul. “I am drawn to poetry because it has a voice of its own, as it speaks of different aspects of life, certain places, experiences and emotions. Poetry has a rhythm all on its own that I think can be very expressive in the way the words are put across through different writers.”

Skelmersdale Writers Group, which Paul is a part of, welcomes all writers who have a wide range of interests which may include poetry, short stories, novels and non-fiction writing. They also run workshops which can inspire new and creative ideas. He said: “There must be other up and coming poets like myself, but I feel they need to bring forward their work to share with others, as if they have a passion and love of writing like I do, then don’t be afraid to share it and be confident. “If they were not destined for that, they would not possess the ability for creative writing. Even if like

me they are not fully accomplished writers, it can be possible through joining a writing group to be influenced and develop themselves as writers, through the guidance and help of other writers that are accomplished.” Skelmersdale Writers Group meets twice a month. The first meeting of the month is a Read your own work session; the second is either a workshop, writing on a theme or a guest speaker. Try trail
running? By Verity Wright If you are wondering how you are going to fit your weekly run in whilst you are away on holiday, why not have a go at trail running? Trail running is running off road, generally in the countryside, and is easier to do in the summer months as running through woodland and countryside is generally shadier than pounding the pavements.
Running off road teaches you to be three or four steps ahead of turns, roots, rocks and puddles, these skills are transferable to when running on a road race as you have the ability to manoeuvre quickly which enables you to get out of the way quickly if someone just stops in front of you or if an empty water bottle into you running path.
One of the main differences between road running and trail running is that you have to really look where you are going when you run off road as you are having to deal with the constant change under foot; no two steps are the same when you are running on a natural obstacle course.
Whilst running off road is wonderful experience, you do have to be careful especially if you are exploring new areas. And if you enjoy it, then check out the following local clubs when you get back off holiday;
Trail running builds strength and endurance as it forces you to slow your pace down and running on a varied terrain really challenges the muscles of the lower body more than a flat firm run. By running off road your muscles need to work harder to maintain your balance and keep you upright; this in turn helps keep your core strong which helps keep you agile and coordinated.

Think ahead as summer
slips away
Summer is nearing its end. After the long warm sunny days we have all enjoyed, sadly our lawns have been extremely challenged due to the drought conditions. The grass has been under severe stress this summer therefore it is important keep feeding whilst the grass is growing as the plants have been starved of nutrients due to the dry soil over the summer. Indeed some areas may have developed a condition called “Dry Patch” when the soil will not absorb moisture (See below). It is essential to maintain your lawns as we move towards the cooler autumn and winter months.
to remove surface debris and keep removing the leaves each week. This allows maximum sunlight to the grass as the daylight hours shorten. Layers of leaves left on the lawn starve the grass of sunlight and vital air circulation causing dieback which is unsightly and may result in the need to re-seed localised areas. Between Autumn and Spring is the best time to carry out Hollow Tine Aeration and Scarification on the lawn. Aeration breaks up the compacted layer of soil exaggerated by the drought and cuts through sub-surface thatch by pulling out thousands of cores. This allows nutrients and water passageways to the root zone. Also promoting improved surface drainage, Scarification removes the surface debris and allows air and moisture to the plants. After this summer many lawns are covered in dead blades of grass which need removing by raking or scarification as soon as the lawn has recovered following substantial rain. Having prepared your lawn
Keep mowing the lawns whilst they are still growing. If they are looking a little “tufty “ as they recover, mowing frequently, but removing only a small amount each cut will stimulate growth. Your final cut before the winter should leave the lawn at 3.5cm (1.5 inches) to allow protection from frost. In preparation for winter give the lawn a good rake
for winter its time to take a break, or, if you need help, call the professionals. GreenThumb (Lancashire West) has been operating locally since 1999 and can draw on a wealth of experience to offer advice and undertake lawn care treatments using qualified staff, specially prepared additives and professional equipment. Health & Fitness
A healthier
heart
By Louise Addison Cardiovascular disease causes 26% of all deaths in the UK; that’s over 150,000 deaths each year – an average of 420 people each day or one death every three minutes. Those are the scary statistics but what can you do to improve the health of your heart? Below are the top tips according to leading cardiologists. Walk 30 minutes every day, no matter what! – A half hour walk every day decreases an individual’s chances of a heart attack by 30%. If you think you’ll skip days find a walking buddy and hold each other accountable. Find out your blood pressure and take steps to bring it down – Your blood pressure may be a more important factor than your cholesterol! If the doctor prescribes medication take it, but you can also take steps to lower it yourself and maybe reduce the need for medication. The best ways are to exercise and lose some belly fat. Individuals with high levels of fat in the abdominal cavity (belly fat) and around their abdominal organs are more likely to develop high blood pressure because this fat interferes with the function of the kidneys, which regulate the blood pressure. Know what your HDL number is and then do what you can to raise it to 1.3 mmol/l - In women especially it seems that a higher HDL (good cholesterol) number is more important than a low
LDL (bad cholesterol) number. Eat about 25g of raw, fresh, unsalted nuts per day – especially walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios and almonds. Nuts are packed with omega 3 oils, raise levels of HDL good cholesterol, decrease inflammation and have a good effect on the heart. Healthy fats such as olive or rapeseed oil have a positive effect too, and the
37 really good news is that an alcoholic drink per day also works in your favour! Eat a good quality tomato pasta sauce! Simple tomato pasta sauce is loaded with potassium which aids lowering of blood pressure. Floss! – Most people don’t know that your oral health has an effect on arterial health so make sure those pearly whites stay clean and flossed. Limit saturated fat and avoid trans fats – Try to keep saturated fat below 20g per day. Both saturated fat and trans fats (found in many processed foods) lead to inflammation of the arteries. Read labels and avoid foods which list sugar as one of the first five ingredients – In particular don’t be fooled by foods which claim to be ‘low fat’ because often they contain extra sugar instead. Healthy fats such as olive oil are better than empty sugar calories. Drink wine – But not too much! It’s a slightly bizarre (but consistent scientific truth) that teetotal folk have a higher risk of heart disease than those
who drink in moderation. But a glass of red wine occasionally is very different to binge drinking once a week so be careful with this tip. Eat a rainbow of fruit and veg – Five to nine servings a day will help to keep your heart in tiptop condition. It may sound a lot but if you add chopped veg to pie fillings and casseroles and eat fruit at breakfast and salad stuff for snacks it all adds up.

Say
again By Louise Addison
Here are five simple ways to tell if it’s time to check your hearing: You often ask people to repeat themselves - It sounds as though people around you are mumbling all the time and you find it hard to hear people unless they’re facing you directly. It’s more common to experience hearing loss in the high frequencies so another sign is having trouble understanding
You hear a ringing or buzzing noise in your ears - Tinnitus occurs when you hear sounds like ringing or buzzing noise in your ears when no such sound is present. Sometimes it’s temporary e.g. after attending a loud concert. But ringing which doesn’t fade away, without any apparent cause is a common first sign of hearing loss. You strain to hear in noisy places - You struggle to focus on what people are saying in places with background noise, such as a restaurant or shopping centre. This can make you feel very tired. You miss everyday sounds - If people complain you miss their calls or say they have to knock for ages before you answer the door consider it a warning sign, especially if combined with people complaining you have the TV or radio set too loud.
women and children who tend to have higherpitched voices. Your family complains that the TV is too loud - If you’re turning up the volume to a point where those around you complain about how loud it is, it might be time to pay attention, especially since listening to excessively loud music can do further damage to your hearing.
Whilst it can be tough to admit your hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, it’s best to take action early on. With the right support and technology, hearing loss doesn’t need to keep you from enjoying all the fun things in life. Book an appointment with your GP or an audiologist today.

Stretch benefits In an attempt to prevent injury, most of us stretch before exercise and some (though not as many) stretch afterwards. But if we’re doing fairly steady activities (jogging, cycling or walking) then while stretching will improve our flexibility there is not much evidence it will prevent muscle injury. In these cases the advice is to warm up with five minutes of light, gradual exercise instead. The reason for this is that it’s important to increase the blood flow to the muscles and heart steadily, sudden changes will cause muscles to fatigue more quickly.

Stretching is more effective if you’re doing the type of exercise where you land constantly and forcefully on your feet, or stop and start quickly (sprinting, tennis, weight-lifting, or competitive team sports like football). The more flexible the muscles are the more impact they’ll be able to sustain. But everyone benefits from stretching after a workout. During exercise lactic acid builds up in your muscles. This can lead to soreness and fatigue. Stretching after a workout helps to eliminate the lactic acid and restore the muscle to its relaxed state, preventing the fatigue. By Sarah Davey

Food & Drink
Courgette Gratin A great way to use up the glut of courgettes around at this time of year. Serves 4 ~ Preparation time: 20 mins ~ Cooking time: 30 mins
Ingredients
Method
2 tbsp olive oil
Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas 6
800g/1lb 12oz courgettes, sliced into 5mm/¼in rounds
Place the olive oil in a heavy large, lidded frying pan over a low heat. When hot add the courgettes and herbs and season with salt and pepper.
A few sprigs of thyme
Cover the pan and cook gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the courgettes have softened slightly but still have a little bite. Transfer the courgette and herb mixture to an ovenproof dish.
A few basil leaves 100ml/3½fl oz crème fraîche 50ml/2fl oz milk 1 tsp plain flour 75g/2½oz Gruyère or similar cheese, grated Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Whisk together the crème fraîche, milk and flour in a bowl and season with salt. Pour the resulting mixture over the courgettes. Don’t worry if there is not enough to submerge the courgettes as the mixture will bubble up when cooking. Sprinkle over the Gruyère cheese. Bake in the oven for around 25 minutes, or until brown and bubbling. Serve as a side dish, or as a light supper with crusty bread and a green salad. Note: Gruyère is a wonderfully melty Swiss cheese but if you can’t find it try Emmental, Beaufort, Jarlsberg or Comté.

Pecan Pie A Traditional American Favourite. Serves 8-10 ~ Preparation time: 20 mins + chilling ~ Cooking time: 1 hr 15 mins
Ingredients
Method
500g pack ready-made sweet shortcrust pastry
Lightly flour the work surface. Roll out the pastry and use to line a 23cm loose-bottomed tart tin. (Top tip - I always keep left over pastry in case I need to fill any cracks after the blind baking!) Prick the pastry base with a fork then chill for 30 mins.
75g unsalted butter, softened 100g golden caster sugar 175g golden syrup 175g maple syrup 3 eggs, beaten ½ tsp vanilla extract 300g Pecan nuts halves Double cream, or good quality ice cream to serve
Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Line the chilled pastry case with greasproof paper, fill with ceramic baking beans and bake for 15-20 mins until the sides are set. Remove the beans and parchment and return to the oven for 5-10 mins until the base is set and the pastry is golden. Leave to cool. Increase the oven temperature to 200C/190C fan/gas 6. Beat the butter and sugar together with an electric whisk until light and fluffy. While the beaters are still turning pour in both of the syrups. Gradually add the beaten eggs, 1⁄4 tsp salt and the vanilla, and whisk until combined. Then stir through the nuts and pour all of the mixture into the tart case. Bake for 10 mins. Turn heat down to 160C/140C fan/gas 3 and continue baking for 30-35 mins – the pie should be golden brown but the filling should wobble a little in the centre when shaken. Leave to cool completely in the tin. Serve with cream or ice cream.

Wheelton
Moor
by Chris Pearce
Despite the name, the moor isn’t in Wheelton; it’s actually closer to neighbouring Brinscall and it’s from there that we start this scenic, easy-to-follow 6 mile route. There’s a fair amount of off road parking in the village and we start in Lodge Bank, near to Brinscall Swimming Pool (PR6 8QU). Exit Lodge Bank and turn right. Instead of following the bend in the road, go straight on into Butterworth Brow and then take the first right up Well Lane. The early morning sunshine quickly disappears, blocked out by the canopy that is Wheelton Plantations, as we climbed Well Lane.
Ignore the entrances to the Plantations on the right and carry on up the incline until you can go no further by road, then go through the entrance gate to the Moor and follow the stony path that bears slightly to the right. At this point you should take a breather and indulge in the rural views of Chorley’s eastern villages that have opened up behind you before you continue up the pathway onto the 90 square miles of wild, unspoilt countryside that is the West Pennine Moors. Remnants of stone cottages are dotted around Wheelton Moor, which are only inhabited nowadays

50 by the odd visit from the hardy sheep. Though bleak in winter, at the height of summer this is a stunning landscape, a desolate setting where generations of northern folk have visited for recreation, enjoying
Known as Lancashire’s most picturesque cricket ground, White Coppice is worth loitering awhile on the many benches available if there’s a match on, to use the facilities or grab a bacon butty. Return from

the cricket ground through the gate and turn left down the pathway by The Goit, heading north and passing the cricket scoreboard on the way.
You’ll follow the stony path for just over a mile, eventually heading towards the Winter Hill transmitter mast until you reach a Ramblers Association signpost indicating the routes to Brinscall, Belmont Road and White Coppice. You’re at the walk’s highest point, 297m, and at this point, take the sharp right turn downhill towards White Coppice. On the way down, your views will include Great Hill and Hurst Hill. This is a popular route so the gentle inclining path to White Coppice is well defined and also a bit loose underfoot in parts, particularly going downhill, so take care. Once you’ve almost reached the bottom of the hill, you’ll need to bear left to arrive at the gated bridge over The Goit at White Coppice.
The Goit is a scenic canal used for transporting drinking water along the Rivington chain of reservoirs, and we follow the shady pathway for just over a mile until a footpath on the left appears just short of a grey metal sluice on The Goit. Go down the footpath, ignore the first footpath on the left (which takes you back in the direction you came) and take the next footpath on the left heading away from The Goit. Follow this path along the right hand perimeter of the field and, once you get to the corner, go through the stile, over a footbridge and head directly across an open field. Go through another stile and immediately dip down and turn right along the wide path that was formerly part of the Chorley to Blackburn railway line, and which once hosted 14 passenger trains daily. Once you reach three steel gates, take the one on the right and then, once you’re through, turn left along the cobbled road. This road eventually takes you past Brinscall Lake and into Lodge Bank where you will reach your starting point.
For those with the OS Maps app on your desktop, mobile or tablet, this walk is named: JT Wheelton Moor

Subaru
Impreza by Tim Barnes-Clay
The fifth incarnation of the Subaru Impreza brings four-wheel-drive grip within reach of buyers who don’t fancy an SUV. It is an Astra-sized hatchback with a symmetrical all-wheel-drive (AWD) system coupled to 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol Boxer units. I drove the higher powered 2.0-litre. What’s intriguing about the new Impreza is that it is the first motor to be launched in Britain on Subaru’s fresh Global Platform – the pillar of all its future models. There is nothing stirring about the latest Impreza’s silhouette, but the interior is better than the former model’s. The quality of plastics and finishes have been enhanced, while the cabin is wider and offers more rear legroom. Maximum cargo capacity has also been boosted by 10 litres. The cabin houses lots of kit, too, with safety being the new Impreza’s selling point. The car is fitted with
EyeSight technology – a camera-based system that scans the way ahead for other road-users. It is more accurate than conventional camera and sensor arrangements, continually producing 3D images and identifying specific objects – rather than just reacting to unknown obstacles. Behind the wheel, the 2.0-litre powerplant isn’t mind-blowingly quick. The car pulls away briskly, but anything after this feels a tad lifeless, so you must plan your overtakes in advance. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) imitates an orthodox auto’s ratios. It works okay, but it does whine offensively. There’s no manual gearbox, as the intricate EyeSight gadgetry only functions with the CVT. So, when all’s said and done, you need to work the engine like a dog to make real headway. Relax to a cruise, however, and the refinement is respectable, even if the levels of tyre rumble are a touch too much.
53
Handling-wise, the Impreza corners with hardly any body lean. The steering is well-weighted, and the grip is incredible, due to the all-wheel-drive system.
Car Paintwork Repairs
Alas, you will fork out for the Impreza’s traction talents when you fill the car with petrol. The 2.0-litre variant only returns 42.8mpg, meaning the Subaru is eclipsed on the efficiency front by many SUVs. But Subaru is happy with how safe its cars are. It is proud of its durability. It is proud of its slightly unexciting worthiness. And that’s cool, for keeping a core brand of loyal buyers content, but it will do nothing to lure new customers from competing manufacturers. Still, if you want a family-sized hatchback, then the Impreza is a safe bet – in more ways than one.

Gardening
Daisy
Daisy
By Rachael Leverton
There are some flowers I love because they are showstoppers, others because of their evocative scent, and some because they are unusual. Michaelmas daisies don’t tick any of those boxes, but I love them anyway. They are bright, cheerful, and completely undemanding - at home in the poorest, driest soils, and bees and butterflies love them! They get their common name from their flowering period, which peaks at Michaelmas, the feast of St. Michael on September 5th, though they will carry on flowering well into late autumn. This means they are great for injecting colour into borders which can start to look a little washed-out and dreary in late summer. Until the mid-nineties, Michaelmas daisies were all known scientifically as asters, but then some were reclassified. Look out for the name Symphyotrichum, as many popular varieties now carry that name instead The gardener credited with popularising the Michaelmas daisy was Ernest Ballard. Many of the varieties he cultivated are still available and bear
the names of his family members. “Ada Ballard” is named for his sister and is lavender blue, “Marie Ballard” is a pretty pale blue double bloom named for his wife. He is also responsible for “Prosperity” and “Peace”, rose-pink and deep mauve respectively, which he named straight after the First World War. If you want a tallish variety suitable for the middle of the border, try “Little Carlow” which grows to about 90cm and produces masses of violet-blue blooms. One of my favourites for the back of the border is “Calliope” which has striking black elegant stems that reach heights of 2m, smothered in delicate lilac flowers. A good small variety is “Beggarten” which is pale blue, compact and clump-forming. “Tonga” is also smaller and is a lovely deep purple which looks great in a container. Although they are not high-maintenance plants Michaelmas daisies benefit from being cut down to ground level in late autumn and covered in a good mulch of well-rotted organic matter. And that’s all there is to it!
