NewYear

New Look A

longside your new look magazine is a brand new website, www.locallife247.co.uk, which is made in Wigan courtesy of our friends at Attain. Do take a look when you have a minute. Among other things, walkers can download a selection of Jack’s Tracks and readers can enter competitions, upload photos and register to get a free online copy of Local Life every month. The major change though on the website is the launch of Events2go, our new local what’s on guide. Events2go is a calendar of events, constantly updated by our staff and by event organisers. Events2go is on the website, it’s a fast-growing Facebook page and it will play a major part of the magazine from March too. If you’re a Facebook user, do give Events2go a ‘like’ when you’re next online, and we’ll do our best to inspire you And if you organise any sort of event, from meetings to fairs, fundraisers or the local pub quiz night, Events2go gives you the tools to publicise your event/s absolutely FREE. Simply visit the website, click on Events2go, and upload details and even a picture or poster if you have one. Those details will be used on the website, in our magazines, on social media and, later this year, in an Events2go newsletter, emailed weekly to thousands of people. Time to get out and about everyone, spring is in sight and Events2go is a pretty good place to start! See you next time

home?

id you know that 96% of businesses fail within 10 years? So, the remaining 4% must be pretty good at what they do to survive, right? Now scale this up x13.7 to 137 years and just imagine how good a company would have to be to thrive for so long. Are there any companies in Wigan that old? Actually yes, it was 1880 when Wigan’s oldest estate agent, Healy Simpson opened. 1880 was a time when Wigan Rugby were still actually playing Union and Wigan Corporation had just started a horse drawn tram service through the town. The estate agency business has obviously seen many changes since then. However, the focus at Healy Simpson remains the same; to deliver a professional and personal service to all clients old and new. Selling your home is an immense undertaking, one with huge financial implications for your family, so how do you make sure you get the right Estate Agent to guide you through the process? Valuation – getting the right valuation for your home from the start of the process will obviously speed up the sale. Healy Simpson is one of only two domestic Estate Agents in Wigan to be a RICS Registered Valuer – so you have peace of mind that your home is valued correctly. Expertise - Based on very accessible Bridgeman Terrace with parking outside, Healy Simpson have a small but dedicated team able to provide a personal and professional service to suit your individual needs. You’re not just a number at Healy Simpson, you’re a valued client. Advertising – With comprehensive property sections in local newspapers a thing of the past, most dedicated property seekers now use the

Lyndsey, Carolyn and Lesley internet to search for properties. ALL Healy Simpson properties are featured on www.rightmove.co.uk In addition to sales and lettings, Healy Simpson deals with many landlords (both domestic and commercial) and would be happy to speak to landlords about their requirements. The company is particularly experienced in dealing with empty property such as probate cases which often includes clearance arrangements, dealing with maintenance issues and other issues which can arise in probate. So if you have property you want to sell or rent out, do give Healy Simpson a call. With traditional service values, coupled with expert valuations and high profile advertising, Healy Simpson is the estate agent of choice for generations of Wigan families.

Lanky Luddites play A new musical about the Lancashire Luddites and the burning of Westhoughton Mill in 1812 is being produced by Whitley-based Willpower Youth Theatre. Under The Canopy of Heaven is set against the backdrop of suffering from bad harvest, the banning of any trade unions, a government that wouldn’t listen and the beginning of the industrial revolution. It tells the story of local workers who in their desperation to be taken seriously smashed the power looms and set fire to the mill with tragic consequences. The show runs from Wednesday, March 8, to Saturday, March 11 at 7.30pm including a matinee performance on Saturday, March 11 starting at 2pm. Performances are held at St. Michael’s Hall, Shaw Street Wigan. For tickets call 01942 745082.

Land challenge expected Plans to turn a large stretch of land in Standish into official designated Green Belt faces possible derailment. The idea, which involves land between the southern end of Bradley Hall Trading Estate down to the rear of Lordy Close, could be ditched later this year following the Greater Manchester mayoral elections. It also means plans to build 1,000 homes on green belt off Wigan Road, New Springs, could also be in jeopardy. The schemes are part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework plan. The favourite to become Mayor in May, borough MP Andy Burnham, has called for the plan to be rewritten due to widespread protests in Wigan and neighbouring areas.

The perfect time to think about a funeral plan is today Did you know the average funeral costs 92% more than it did 11 years ago? With a 50+ Funeral Plan from Golden Charter you can freeze the cost of your funeral directors services included in your plan at today’s prices. Take a look at the benefits of 50+ Funeral Plans • Protection against rising funeral costs. • Peace of mind. • Reassurance for your family. • Flexibility to choose the funeral you want.

However, even if the strategy stayed intact, civil servants believe developers would fight against any moves to add the Standish land to green belt effectively making it harder for them to get planning permission. One Wigan Council insider told Local Life: “We are expecting landowners and developers to object. The council officers believe there has been a lot of ground given to developers in Standish in the past few years, and this is a way of balancing it all out. However, homes in Standish always sell, and for a good price, so they want to build.” Amid growing anger in communities across Wigan, Andy Burnham called for the current Spatial Framework to be rewritten: “I would propose that we consider the aim of no net loss of green belt.”

Let a

I

little sun into your life

n this age of rampant globalization, it’s good to hear a tale of a successful Wigan family business investing into the local area by opening other businesses. Such is the case with the Bott family of Shevington.

The ground floor still hosts 3 tanning beds and its business as usual for all clients old and new. Petite Soleil are honouring any minutes still remaining on courses held with the previous Management.

The family business, Pemberton Tyres, was established by Arthur back in 1966, and is now run by son Alan. In 2016, Alan’s daughter Sophie opened Petite Beautique on Standish High Street, and his other daughter Gemma has just opened Petite Soleil on Church Road in Shevington.

Prices remain unchanged at £1.25 per 3 minutes, courses at £10 for 33 mins and £20 for 75 mins. The floor above is home to the hair and makeup station and two beautiful treatment rooms.

Of course, a business needs more than family connections to survive but fortunately, Petite Soleil has plenty to appeal to potential customers. After an extensive refurbishment to the salon (formerly Beauty and the Beach) Petite Soleil is now open at the beautiful Church Lane premises, resplendent in luxurious shabby chic and located over two floors.

After spending the past 12 months helping her younger sister get Petite Beautique up and running, Gemma’s looking forward to welcoming the residents of Shevington into her one stop salon for sunbeds, hair and beauty. Joining Gemma on the team will be Toni & Guy trained hairstylist Philippa Howarth and experienced beautician Emily Rimmer. There are many beauty treatments available which include eyelash extensions, brows, microblading, waxing, facials, massage, semi-permanent makeup, electrolysis, spray tans, occasion makeup to name

19 Updates on offers , clinics, etc are always posted to the Facebook page and an impressive website which also has an online booking option. Following in Sophie’s footsteps, Gemma will ensure that all products and services at Petite Soleil will be to an equally high standard. You can pop along and check out the salon anytime or at the official open day on Friday 17 February from 1pm -6pm. Afternoon tea and goodie bags will be on offer and opening the proceedings will be British Superbike Rider Tommy Bridewell. a few. Another growing trend offered by the salon is Men’s facial waxing - removing unwanted tufts from the nostrils, ears, eyebrows, temples and cheekbones. Philippa will be offering all manner of hair services for men, women and children, including cuts, colours, blow-dry, hair ups, Velcro rollers & hair extensions. The salon is open 6 days a week. Monday opens until 6pm , Tuesday to Friday until 8pm and Saturday until 6pm. Perfect hours for today’s busy customers.

Frank’s for the memories! A Standish man has written a book on his life growing up in a former part of Wigan. Frank grew up in Garswood and he hopes his book will help raise money for his former Sunday School, St Andrew’s Mission Hall on Montrey Crescent. Frank said: “The Mission Hall was not only our place of worship it was also the changing room for visiting football teams. The home team got dressed at home. However the Mission hall was the hub of village activities which included Saturday night dancing for those who were old enough, which attracted people from neighbouring villages.

“Up to the Local Government Boundary reorganisation of 1972, Garswood was controlled by Wigan, but now it comes under St Helens. Born and educated in Wigan I feel it is to Wigan I owe my allegiance - hence I support Wigan rugby, not St Helens!” Frank’s book is priced around £6 and will be available from St Andrew’s Mission soon.

A big hit Down

Under

David Sudworth meets the Standish mum who is now representing Australia in international polo

W

hen Victoria Roscoe went backpacking to Australia in 2003, she didn’t quite realise what a life-changing adventure it would become. Because not only has the Standish woman settled down and started a family over there, she’s also represented her new country at polo. Despite being ‘obsessed’ with riding as a child, she never imagined she’d be competing in this most fast-paced and (in this country at least) elite of sports. “My dad used to take me to Roocroft Stables at Wrightington every school holiday, and I’d be there from 5.30am-7pm. I loved it and the owner, Judith Burton, was brilliant. I owe her a lot when it comes to my love of riding.” The sporting success seems to run in her family; one of Victoria’s brothers, Adam, 31, plays semi professional football for Chorley FC. By coincidence, Adam had a spell playing Australian football around 10 years ago. Victoria, now 35, was back at parents Derek and Alison’s home on Highfield Drive recently. Accompanying her on the trip was her husband Dick and their 18-month-old son Patrick. The former Standish High pupil told Local Life: “I took a gap year in 2003 - I worked on the night shift at Asda at Saddle Junction to help pay for it.

45

46 “The plan was to do six months backpacking around Australia and then return home. “I got jobs while I was out there and it was while stacking hay that I met Dick. He’s Australian and at first he thought I was Scottish, even though I’m from Wigan! Dick’s family are into polo. Over there it’s not the sort of elitist sport which it is in England. So I started playing and found I really enjoyed it.” Soon, Victoria’s talents started being recognised and soon she got picked for the Australian women’s team: “I’ve still got a British passport but if you reside in Australia, then you can play for them, which is a great honour. I’ve travelled to places like Thailand and even Barbados to play for the national team.” Victoria and Dick, who were married in 2009, now have their own business looking after and breeding horses in a small settlement called Bilpin, which is around 50 miles north west of Sydney. She also turns out for a local club in nearby Richmond.

I wonder whether one day she’d like to turn out for England. She smiles: “It’s a great honour to play for any team. Obviously both countries are important to me but as long as I’m playing and enjoying it, then that’s what matters.”

Orwell that ends

well?

David Sudworth takes The Road To Wigan Pier on the 80th anniversary of this controversial publication

O

f all George Orwell’s work, The Road To Wigan Pier is perhaps the least quotable.

‘Big Brother is Watching You’, ‘Some are more equal than others’ and ‘Newspeak’ all entered the nation’s lexicon through his famous novels Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. However, both were written over 10 years after he visited the town. Both were also fictitious plots, whereas The Road To Wigan Pier was very much rooted in truth. Perhaps too much for some. Since its publication 80 years ago, Wigan has had an awkward relationship with the man who cast a spotlight on the plight of its poverty-stricken communities. First he was criticised, then he was ignored. In the mid-1980s, he had a pub named after him next to Wigan Pier. Nowadays, the perception remains that Orwell’s description of Wigan did the town more harm than good. The council’s deputy leader told a national newspaper in 2011: “It’s took us a long time to get over his books. I can’t say he did us any favours; the flat-cap-andwhippet syndrome stuck around longer than we wanted.” Orwell’s supporters counter that he merely reported what he saw without fear or favour. So as the town prepares for a series of events to mark the book’s 80th anniversary, we look at Orwell himself, how he came to visit Wigan and what he actually said about the place.

52 Born on June 25, 1903, George Orwell was in fact a pen name - he was born Eric Arthur Blair in Bihar, India. His father worked in the Opium Department in the Indian civil service. In 1904, the family moved back to the UK, and Orwell was brought up at Henley-On-Thames, Oxfordshire. As a child, he wrote poetry and eventually won a scholarship to Eton public school. Reports from his time there suggest he didn’t excel, so eventually he headed back to the Far East to work as an imperial policeman in Burma - work that inspired future novels including Shooting An Elephant and Burmese Days. A family holiday in Cornwall persuaded him to return home for good and he started work as a writer. He later also became a teacher in West London. While at the school, he got to know, through a colleague, the left-wing publisher Victor Gollancz. It was Gollancz who, in 1936, tasked Orwell with spending some time investigating the social issues of the north. It came just two years after the celebrated novelist J.B. Priestly had written acclaimed reports about the

state of England north of the River Trent. On January 31, 1936, Orwell set off from London towards the north. He arrived in Coventry at 4pm at a “very lousy” B&B with a “half-witted servant girl Orwell in Burma with huge body, tiny head and rolls of fat at the back of the neck”. Such descriptive insights only came to light a few years ago when Orwell’s diaries were published. Many people who expect The Road To Wigan Pier to be all, or large sections of it, about Wigan are left disappointed. In fact, Orwell, also visited places including Barnsley, Sheffield, Leeds and Manchester. The book is based on broad themes, such as unemployment, lack of housing and poverty, with the examples from the various towns and cities he visited scattered throughout its 215 pages. This is why the diaries, in some parts, are actually far more illuminating on a local level than the book. It’s believed Orwell stayed here at the corner of Warrington Road and Sovereign Road (on the left)

53 Orwell ended up in Wigan at the suggestion of a Manchester trade union official called Frank Meade. In Wigan, Orwell’s first port of call was Jerry Kennan, an unemployment coal miner and an activist in the Independent Labour Party. Kennan lived in a ‘Corporation’ house in Beech Hill - a new development at the time. In turn, Kennan found lodgings for Orwell with the Hornby family at 72 Warrington Lane: “Food all right but indigestible and in monstrous quantities. Lancashire method of eating tripe (cold with vinegar) horrible,” noted Orwell in his diary on February 11. Imagine his delight then a few days later when Mrs Hornby was taken ill and he moved onto lodgings at 22 Darlington Street ... above a tripe shop. Again, Orwell was shocked by the food: “Struck by the astonishing ignorance about and wastefulness

“Blackened houses and broken chocolate” of food among the working class people here. Everything except bread habitually left about uncovered and shelves filthy. Food here consists almost entirely of bread and starch.” Once he gets over his dislike of northern fayre, Orwell brings an insight into what it was like to be poor in 1930s Wigan. He joined unemployed people scrambling around for coal on the town’s slag heaps. And in one incident, he detailed how an ill miner, seeking to draw his compensation, was treated: “He had to go to the colliery once a week at a time named by the company, and when he got there he was kept waiting about for hours in the cold wind. For all I know he was also expected to touch his cap and show gratitude to whoever paid him; at any rate he had to waste an afternoon and spend sixpence in bus fares. This business of petty inconvenience and indignity, of being kept waiting about, of having to do everything at other people’s convenience, is inherent in working-class life.” He also drew attention to the town’s ‘caravan colonies’ of some 200 people, which were scattered

At A Glance: Orwell in Wigan When he visited: February 10-25, 1936 Where he stayed: 72 Warrington Lane (believed to be on the corner of Warrington Road and Sovereign Road) and above a tripe shop at 22 Darlington Street. A plaque (pictured above) marking the area is situated on grass land opposite Lidl, on the corner of Sovereign Road/Warrington Road. Locations visited: Beech Hill and Whelley housing estates; Bryn Gates Colliery (north of Three Sisters Recreation Area), Ashton; Wigan Co-Op Hall; canal towpath towards Wigan Pier, Wallgate, Scholes, Greenough’s Row and people sleeping in caravans on wasteland off the Leeds & Liverpool Canal . Orwell on Wigan folk: “I liked Wigan people very much. Everyone was astonishingly patient. If any unauthorised person walked into my house and began asking me whether the roof leaked, whether I was much troubled by bugs and what I thought of my landlord, I should probably tell him to go to hell!” Orwell on Wigan town: “Not seem as bad as it has been represented – distinctly less depressing than Manchester. Nearly everyone one sees is very badly dressed and youths on the corners markedly less smart and rowdy than in London. No very obvious signs of poverty except the number of empty shops. Slagheaps, smoke, rows of blackened houses, sticky mud crisscrossed by imprints of clogs, heavy-set young women standing at street corners with their babies wrapped in their shawls, immense piles of broken chocolate in cut-price confectioners’ windows.” Date the book was published: March 8, 1937

54 for the society’s events, hopes local people will go along to hear about Orwell with an open mind: “It will hopefully create an opportunity for discussion. “Orwell wasn’t afraid of having a go at people. His approach was not the standard one you’d see from left-wing writers of the time. That caused a bit of a stir. Quentin (left) with Orwell’s son, Richard Blair in Catalonia. Orwell was there when Road To Wigan Pier was published on wasteland at the side of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal: “Some of them are actually gypsy caravans, but very old ones and in bad repair. The majority are old, single decker buses which have been taken off their wheels and propped up with struts of wood. The dirt and congestion of these places is such that you cannot well imagine unless you have tested it with your own eyes and, particularly, your nose.” However, Orwell wasn’t particularly taken with the new Wigan Corporation houses at Beech Hill and Whelley either: “I found that people in Corporation houses don’t really like them. There is an uncomfortable, almost prison-like atmosphere.” Quentin Kopp, secretary of The Orwell Society, believes the author, far from casting aspirations on the folk of Wigan, he was actually successful to help them by bringing their plight to a wider audience: “It’s probably just been passed along, by word of mouth, down the years that Orwell is bad news for Wigan. I don’t think there’s any record of him gilding the lily in terms of the facts. He saw how people lived first hand. He wasn’t staying in the Midland Hotel in Manchester, visiting Wigan for a day and then going back to luxury. He went down the mines and saw things from the same position of people who experienced it as a daily reality.” Orwell died from TB in 1959, aged just 46, but his works continue to be talked heavily referenced. And in this anniversary year of The Road To Wigan Pier, both the council and the Orwell Society are hosting a series of events to mark the occasion. Quentin, who is currently making final arrangements

“He doesn’t slag Wigan off. His endeavour was to explain things which were making

the lives of Wigan people bloody difficult at the time. Although we can’t say for certain it hastened the advent of the Beveridge Report of 1942, which in effect paved the way for the welfare state, it did bring those issues to the fore quicker.” The Road To Wigan Pier is available from various bookshops or to loan from several Wigan libraries. The Orwell diary entries from his time in Wigan can be viewed at www.theroadtowiganpier. wordpress.com

Road To Wigan Pier: 80th annivesary events Tuesday, March 7 Museum of Wigan Life, Library Street Stephen Armstrong, author of The Road to Wigan Pier Revisited, marks the 80th anniversary with a talk about Orwell and his writing. Chartered Financial Planner and Managing Director

At the heart of the problem was that “everything was all over the place” - for every investment he was dealing with a different company and no action was being taken by his adviser, potentially costing him money. I asked him what his “ideal” would feel and look like.

H

appy New Year to all Local Life readers, let’s hope you will all “Prosper” throughout 2017. Apologies for the plug but it’s the only time of year that I can get away with it. With 2017 underway, the New Year’s resolutions are now normally firmly in place, but the usual ‘more exercise’, ‘more dieting’, ‘less drink’ all involve an element of pain and deprivation and most of us tend to fall by the wayside within a week or two. One resolution that you may want to retrospectively add to your list, one which involves very little pain but can have significant benefits, is to have an investment health check. Every January I notice a significant increase in the number of enquiries from Local Life readers. What prompts this increase? Perhaps time off over Christmas, completion of tax returns, whatever the trigger, reviewing and revamping your portfolio now could make a significant difference to your portfolio value. Apart from weeding out the poor performing funds, you might find your finances could be arranged more tax-efficiently. I was recently talking to a prospective client who was having a moan about the amount of paperwork he was receiving from all his different investments.

He wanted to….. • Retake full control of his investments rather than getting swamped with paperwork and information • Have “peace of mind” knowing that a single expert was also keeping an eye on his investments • Invest in a wide choice of leading companies without being tied in to a single company/fund • Obtain portfolio valuations immediately It probably does not come as a great surprise to learn that our Wealth Management Service delivers on all the points above. Indeed one of our recently engaged clients described the difference between the old way of managing investments and using the Prosper Wealth Management Service as “an absolute revelation” If you would like more information please feel free to get in touch on 01257 423800. Alternatively visit our website www.prosper-ifa.co.uk or email us to request a brochure. The cost of the initial consultation is met by us and you are under no obligation to take things further. If you invest in the stock market the value of your investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount invested.

Unpaid rates probed Struggling Wigan firms are closing down without paying their business rates bills. Council bosses say that the percentage of rates collected in 2016/17 was down 0.5% compared to the previous year. While part of this could be due to a lag in the system - for instance if a large company changes its payment date - some of the blame has been attributed to companies going bust. A report to councillors said: “The borough continues to see some businesses struggle and the incidence of companies becoming insolvent and winding up continues to be a prominent feature in the management of Business Rates bills. Significant income is lost when companies become insolvent as often bills go unpaid and become unrecoverable. This trend is not showing an improvement in the Wigan Borough.”

Rent-free offer welcomed Traders on Wigan Market have welcomed news that they won’t have to pay rent for three months. Wigan Council, which owns the market, says it will support them during a year of improvements in the town centre, with the building of a new Wigan bus station and more than £1m of improvements to Market Place and the wider town centre.

The council also says there are over 1,600 recorded empty business properties across the borough - a 10% increase year-on-year. “Nationally, as well as locally, empty rate avoidance tactics are becoming increasingly common and are proving incredibly difficult and expensive to challenge with many business property owners employing agents to deploy such tactics more determinedly than their efforts to re-let the premises. This makes some Business Rates bills impossible to legally enforce and income is lost. Our Customer Services team is currently working with authorities and with legal experts to combat tactics where possible.”

Planning for

growth by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy

A

s we enter 2017 many of us have set ourselves goals with regards to fitness, holidays or our finances. If you are a business owner, now is the perfect time to think about what you want to accomplish within your business in 2017, and for you to start to put your thoughts and ideas into a plan. Business planning is a vital step for success within any industry. Without a measurable plan of action, it’s easy to lose track of what you are aiming to achieve. A good business plan will focus the mind, clarify ideas and define long-term objectives. So why not take firm control of your company’s future with a simple business plan?

Starting a business plan: Financial and business planning can seem daunting at first, especially if you haven’t done a similar exercise before. To simplify matters, here are three easy questions to ask yourself. Write down your answers and they will instantly form the basis of your business plan: > Where is your business at right now? Make an assessment of your business as it is at the moment, look at your strengths and weaknesses and think about how to utilise your strengths to increase performance and profitability. > Where do you want your business to be? Think about any new products or services you can offer your customers, or ways of expanding your existing

offering to new customers. Set achievable targets and goals and revise them regularly. > How will you get there? Think about what resources you will need to ensure your aims and goals are achieved. Look at the key areas in which your business needs to perform and start to measure them through key performance indicators (KPIs). What gets measured gets managed!

What to do next: It is a great idea to talk through your answers with someone outside of your business, who is impartial but has a solid understanding of your goals. Here at CMA, as well as making sure your business finances are in the best shape possible, we are also experienced business advisers and can provide expert assistance to help you grow. We go the extra mile and work with you to understand your current position and future business goals. We can help you to devise a full, extensive plan to ensure your business thrives. How to strengthen

your bones

By Abi Jackson

I

t’s easy to dismiss osteoporosis as an inevitable part of growing old - but understanding the causes, and how to manage the condition, can make a big difference. It’s believed that more than three million people in the UK are currently living with osteoporosis, associated with weakened, fragile bones. The vast majority of those affected are over 50, and mostly women - one in two women, and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone as a result of osteoporosis, according to the National Osteoporosis Society (nos.org.uk), with the wrists, hips and spine most commonly affected. While bone density can decrease with age, and for some people osteoporosis may be linked with other health problems or medications, generally speaking, there’s a lot we can do to try and prevent it, and ensure those who do develop problems can minimise pain and complications. Is osteoporosis serious? Severe osteoporosis can be very problematic due to the increased risk of fractures - which can have a knock-on effect, including pain and mobility difficulties. “Severe osteoporosis weakens bones, meaning they can’t cope with minor traumas like falls. This can then lead to fractures that need surgery,” explains Dr Tim Woodman, Medical Director at Bupa UK (www.bupa.co.uk). “A common and serious example are weak hip bones; these can lead to a major procedure resulting in permanently reduced mobility. In more progressive cases, the vertebrae can’t support their own weight and collapse, causing severe pain and often leading to greatly reduced mobility.”

The leading provider of bespoke private care

Care in your OWN home ASK AMANDA! Amanda Singleton is the Registered Care Manager for Independent Living – she answers your questions.

At Christmas we became aware of just how difficult mum is finding things. What can be put in place for us? ANSWER. In January we get calls from relatives who have realised their loved ones aren’t coping as well as they thought. Spending an hour with a loved one or telephoning does not always reveal that they are becoming more forgetful, less mobile, a poorer appetite or their appearance is being neglected.

If a person’s needs are social then companionship could be a good solution. You may just want someone to pop in each day for a chat, make sure they are eating, drinking and taking medication. For serious health issues we can help with personal care: washing, dressing etc. You can have a few hours a week, or a fixed daily routine. If your relative is in reasonable health we can take them out as our carers have car insurance and we have a wheelchair available. We can take people to events: shopping, garden centres etc. We can also help with medical appointments. If the situation is medical we can prompt medication, help wash and dress, provide food, shop and housework. If a loved one feels unsafe at night we can stay 10pm to 7am. Night care is often used after a fall, serious illness or a hospital admission. In today’s busy world we understand relatives cannot be there all the time. We provide peace of mind, if we find someone falls ill, not eating/drinking, or has a fall we can inform a next of kin or the support services immediately.

66 Why is it more common in women? The key reason for this is menopause, when a woman’s ovaries stop producing eggs, and eventually periods stop. “Menopause is the biggest risk factor for osteoporosis, and the risks are greater if a woman goes through early menopause (before 45), or has a prolonged time with no periods, due to over-exercising, too much dieting or eating disorders,” explains Dr Catherine Hood, women’s health specialist and ambassador for Kira for women health supplements (www.kiraforwomen. co.uk). “Not only do the ovaries stop producing eggs, they also stop releasing oestrogen into the blood stream. Oestrogen has many effects on the body, including modulating the turnover of bone. Falling levels can have several consequences, including alterations to bone health.” Dr Hood notes osteoporosis risk can also be higher in women with other hormone related conditions, “such as an overactive thyroid gland or pituitary gland disorders”, while certain medications, including some cancer treatments, “can affect hormone levels and bone density”. Do genes play a part? Yes - though it isn’t always clear how. “Research has shown that a person’s genetics can have a large influence on their likelihood of developing osteoporosis. Genes play an important part in regulating bone mineral density. There are likely to be many genes involved but the precise ones responsible for osteoporosis risk have yet to be defined,” says Dr Hood. What about diet? Nutrition also plays a major role in bone health, and this applies from childhood through to older age. “The building of healthy bones starts in childhood and it’s important to adopt healthy habits to prevent osteoporosis and broken bones later in life,” says Dr Hood. “Calcium is an important constituent of bone, so children should eat plenty of leafy green vegetables and dairy products. Vitamin D is also essential and can be found in oily fish and eggs,”

Dr Tim Woodman, Medical Director at Bupa UK says Dr Hood. “But nutrition’s important in adults too and all adults should have 10mcg of vitamin D a day and 700mg of calcium, and eat a diet rich in these things, especially woman after menopause. It can be difficult to get enough of these minerals via diet alone, so adults should consider taking a daily supplement to help maintain strong bones.” And stress? We’re increasingly paying attention to the links between mental and physical health, and it’s known that stress can wreak havoc with hormones - which can impact our bodies in countless ways. “Stress exerts its adverse effects on bone density, mainly via the action of cortisol, one of the major ‘stress hormones’,” says Max Tuck, author of Love Your Bones: The Essential Guide To Ending Osteoporosis And Building A Healthy Skeleton (Hammersmithbooks.co.uk). “Cortisol inhibits the formation of osteoblasts, our bone-building cells. Cortisol also breaks down structural proteins, including collagen, which is the matrix upon which our bones are built. Not only this, but elevated cortisol levels - as a result of daily stress - inhibits the absorption of vitamin D. Finally, chronic stress depletes the body of magnesium, a mineral that’s even more important than calcium for creating strong bones.”

67

68

What role does exercise play? Alongside “a good diet and attention to calcium and vitamin D intake”, Bupa’s Dr Woodman stresses that “regular exercise will help prevent the development of severe osteoporosis”. Dr Hood points out that this, again, is important from childhood through to old age. “Regular weight bearing and resistance exercise is good for improving bone density, such as walking, running or just climbing the stairs at work rather than taking the lift,” she says. Understandably, it’s not uncommon for people with any type of pain or conditions that affect bones and joints to avoid physical activity, out of concern for doing for damage or triggering more pain. However, this can often be counterproductive and keeping active can play an important part in managing long-term conditions. Your healthcare team should be able to advise on how best to go about this if you’re unsure, and always seek advice from your doctor before embarking on any new exercise regimes. “Prolonged rest worsens osteoporosis, so maintaining mobility with therapy and pain control is essential,” says Dr Woodman, who adds that medications can also be used “if bones are already fractured, to help reduce the risk of further damage, as well as reducing pain”.

Food & Drink

Marcus at

home

By Claire Spreadbury

M

arcus Wareing is a serious chef. Whether you’ve watched him on MasterChef, Great British Menu, or in one of his three restaurants, it’s a word you’d definitely use to describe him. And he wouldn’t disagree. “I am serious,” says the 46-year-old. “I’m serious because I need to take my job seriously, and because there is a lot at stake. I take everything I do seriously, but I also now enjoy a lot more and am a little more open-minded.” It’s perhaps this new, (slightly) more relaxed persona that has brought about his latest release, Marcus At Home, which is fit to burst with recipes that very normal folk can try their hand at. And it’s all been inspired by family cooking.

“I love watching my family enjoy food that we’ve made together and my wife makes a brilliant lasagne,” says the father-of-three, who’s married to Jane, 45. “I think now, because the children are more aware of food and are trying more, we as a family are starting to diverge into bigger flavours, spicier food, and just a lot more variety. The kids are not so young any more - they love their food and are growing up. It’s really challenged me to do something I’ve never done before, which is focus on food at home.” Wareing - who describes himself as “driven, precise and friendly” - is a lot more easygoing than you might imagine. He’s perfectly polished (his shirt is impeccably ironed and his beard is as neatly shaved

70 as you’d expect his Parmesan to be), but calm and keen to put me at ease. “When I think of ‘home’, it’s all about the kitchen, the family, laughing and arguing,” says the chef, who hails from Southport, but now resides in Wimbledon (he recommends a deli there called Bayley And Sage, if you’re ever in the area, for the “best fresh fruit and produce”). And now the kids are growing up, cooking together is something that’s happening more often. “It can be hell at times, but it is mostly fun,” he says, eyes twinkling and a smile spreading across his face. “What annoys me about cooking with children - even though I do love it - is the mess. Jess always wants to cook cakes, Archie will get involved in cookery with his mum and he makes a mean salad sandwich. But Jake is all about fryups, and he hates cleaning up.”

Don’t we all? Though I can imagine this is one Michelin-starred chef who won’t stand for anyone not clearing up after themselves, even if they are his children. Fancy some relaxed, homely family food created by one of the best in the business? Tuck into two recipes on pages 72 - 73.

Pumpkin soup with maple-toasted seeds

Method Peel and quarter the pumpkin, reserving the skin and seeds. Cut the pumpkin flesh into rough 2cm chunks, and set aside. Put the skin, seeds, trimmings, bay leaf and rosemary in a large saucepan. Cover with about 2.5 litres water, bring to the boil and simmer for one hour. Strain and reserve the stock.

Serves 8 Ingredients 1 pumpkin, preferably with blue/grey skin, 2kg approx 1 bay leaf 1 sprig of rosemary 125g butter 1tsp sea salt 250ml milk Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper For the maple-toasted seeds: 60g pumpkin seeds 1tbsp maple syrup 1/2tbsp olive oil, plus extra to serve 1/4tsp sea salt

While the stock is simmering, preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. To make the seeds, mix together the pumpkin seeds, maple syrup, olive oil and salt. Scatter evenly on a baking tray and bake for eight to 10 minutes, until golden. Remove and allow to cool, then roughly chop. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat, and add the pumpkin chunks and one teaspoon of salt. Cook for about five minutes, until the pumpkin starts to soften. Pour in about half of the pumpkin stock and bring to a simmer. Cook for 10 minutes, until the pumpkin is completely soft and starting to break down. Stir in the milk, remove the rosemary sprig and bay leaf. Using a stick blender (or transfer to a food processor), blitz until completely smooth, adding more stock as required. Season to taste. Serve the soup hot, scattered with the mapletoasted pumpkin seeds and drizzled with oil.

Braised cod with herb vinaigrette, toasted broccoli, sprouts & chestnuts

Serves 8 Ingredients 4tbsp olive oil 4 thick skin-on cod fillets 250ml chicken or vegetable stock 1 head of broccoli, broken into florets 12 Brussels sprouts, quartered 2 garlic cloves, crushed 100g fresh or vacuum-packed chestnuts, finely chopped Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper For the vinaigrette: 1/4 bunch of tarragon, leaves picked and finely sliced 1/4 bunch of parsley, leaves picked and finely sliced 2tbsp capers, chopped 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 4tbsp white wine vinegar 150ml extra virgin olive oil 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

Method To make the vinaigrette, mix all the ingredients together and set aside. Heat two tablespoons of the olive oil in a large, nonstick frying pan over high heat. Season the cod well with salt and pepper and carefully place in the pan, skin-side down. Cook for a couple of minutes until the base of the cod is nicely browned, then turn over. Pour in 200ml of stock and cover the pan loosely with foil. Reduce the heat and simmer for a maximum of five minutes, until the cod is just cooked through. Heat the remaining two tablespoons of olive oil in a wide frying pan, over high heat until almost smoking. Add the broccoli and sprouts and fry until browned. Pour in the remaining 50ml of stock and add the crushed garlic, then reduce the heat slightly. Cook for a few minutes until the vegetables are just tender, then stir in the chestnuts. To serve, divide the vegetables between plates and sit the cod on top. Drizzle generously with the herbed vinaigrette and serve straight away.

y rights, this walk shouldn’t even be possible. When Sutton Manor Colliery closed in 1991, it still had 40 years of coal reserves left. But with losses of £23m in the years running up to its demise, British Coal had already made up their mind. Today, the site has been transformed into a woodland which, due to its recently installed Dream artwork, has seen the likes of Lord Melvyn Bragg pay a visit. Indeed, the 20 metre high edifice even inspired the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. Our walk, however, starts hundreds of miles from there in the car park at King George V Playing

by David Sudworth

Fields on Jubits Lane, Sutton Manor (WA9 4BB). We headed through the park, across Walkers Lane and in to Brickfields Daisyfield Park. We were immediately greeted by a stunning apple tree groaning under the weight of some beautifully succulent specimens - cue a quick dash back to the car for a plastic bag! Once our impromptu foraging had ended, we followed the path all the way round until it emerges onto Chester Lane. Again, we cross over and go to the left and into Brickfields Red Quarry. This takes you through to Clockface Road. Cross over and go

75 site and across the fields until you reach Gorsey Lane. Word of warning - take care when you reach the road as it’s very easy to step straight out into the path of fast moving traffic. Cross the road and go straight into the parkland opposite. Once in, take the path to the right and follow that round until you reach the second path off to the right. Take this path into Clock Face Country Park. The path comes out on a grassy area which you cross to pick up the main path. Here, go left and follow the path all the way round until you reach the car park. Walk the length of the car park and onto the long tarmacadam

to the left, this time taking the path through Sutton Mill Dam. This is a wonderfully shaded spot but you do need to keep to the right side of the reservoir. When you reach the far end of the dam, go down the steps and take the path that follows the brook until it emerges on to Mill Lane. At this point, turn right and continue along the B5204. After you pass the old, partially demolished railway bridge, take the first right into Abbotsfield Road. After about 60 metres you see the start of the public footpath on your left. Take this and follow it past the industrial

path that takes you down and out past the houses to Clock Face Road. Cross the road and head into Miners Way Clock Face. This crescent shaped path takes you to the entrance of Sutton Manor Wood. You immediately come to a fishing pond where you go left and then take the first path on the right, going up the steep climb. Follow this going right to take the path up to The Dream. Public art always attracts varying comments but the word which best sums it up is probably ‘serene’. It’s the sort of place you could easily spend a

76 good half an hour and come up with 30 different interpretations of its ‘meaning’. Likewise, it’s a lovely spot just to sit, read a book (my own favourite pastime) or eat your lunch.

along Jubits Lane and across to the car park, or stay in the wood, exiting at the north west corner opposite the car park. This five mile walk allows you to see how a northern town, which has struggled for years to erase the physical and mental scars of losing its industrial base, can reinvent itself. The transformation is ongoing, but whatever the future holds for this part of St Helens, its beauty is rightly a source of pride.

After taking in the view, continue all the way round Sutton Manor Wood. You can either exit the wood at the old Sutton Manor Colliery main gates. This is a real treat for those who love their mining history, with the National Coal Board name proudly displayed on the wrought iron design. A demonstration of the past strength and pride in an industry which once brought home the bacon to many local kitchen tables, brought low by a combination of cheap fuel from abroad and environmental considerations.

Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear while walking. The Dream Designed by Jaume Plensa, the man behind the illuminated glass dome at BBC Broadcasting House, his first idea - The Miner’s Soul - was rejected by ex-miners and a local Steering Group. Plensa then shared his original idea for the site, which was The Dream (he held it back originally, fearing it possibly too daring/conceptual). The concept was not only the artist’s response to the brief and the town’s ‘Ex Terra Lucem’ motto, but also directly informed by Jaume’s conversations with the ex-miners and other members of the local community about their aspirations. A total of 6,160 man-hours were spent on site, during which time more than 5,500 cups of tea and coffee were drunk. Since being erected in June 2009, The Dream has featured on Channel 4 and gained coverage in newspapers across the UK, India, Canada and the Middle East.

Is your pet

microchipped? L

ast April, it became a legal requirement for every dog over the age of eight weeks old to be implanted with a microchip, linked to the up-todate details of their owner. So how do microchips work and why are they a good idea? Microchips, as the name suggests, are small chips about the size of a grain of rice. Implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades (in dogs, cats and rabbits), when scanned they provide the scanner with a unique number. In turn, this number is held on a database, together with your details, by one of several companies. Implantation is a relatively simple and quick procedure, performed by vets or other suitably trained individuals, using a needle a little larger than those used for normal injections. The cost of microchipping has also decreased significantly in recent years. If you wish to avoid a hefty fine of £500, it makes sense to ensure your dogs are chipped. The only exceptions to this are when your dog or puppy has been assessed as unsuitable to be chipped by your vet – for example very small puppies or ill dogs. But beyond the legal requirement, microchipping provides peace of mind. Every rescue centre, local authority and vet should scan stray pets for a chip. There’s no better feeling than being able to contact a frantically searching owner and say “don’t worry,

someone has found your pet and he/she is just fine”. Unfortunately, vets are often unable to take in stray animals and rescue centres are packed to the rafters. That’s why it is advisable to microchip not only dogs, but also cats and rabbits (and even parrots!).

Of course, not every stray animal found is well. But being able to contact the owners quickly to get information about them and talk about treatment can make all the difference. And if there’s bad news, at least the owner knows the outcome. So please, make sure your pet is chipped. And don’t forget when you move, or change telephone number, to let the database company know (your vet can help if you don’t know the microchip number or are unsure how to go about this). Just updating your details with your vet will not automatically update the chip details. And that way, we can have more happily ever afters.

WIGGLE WORDS: A TALE OF TWO CITIES

The grown ups are taking

charge... by Angie Barker

A

fair amount of my design work comes from mums and dads whose children have grown up. Their gardens have previously been laid out to accommodate family life; large lawn areas for play, football nets, climbing frames, swings and the dreaded trampoline. When the children would prefer to update their status on Facebook and tweet rather than do cartwheels on the lawn, then it is time for a change. Mums and dads are looking to reclaim their outside space for some adult relaxation and entertaining and who can blame them. Here are some of my tips for creating an adult friendly garden: • Have more than one seating area so that you always have somewhere to sit in the sun, whatever aspect your garden has • Don’t be afraid to use a mix of materials – natural stone paving and hardwood decking work well together and look very grown up. (Ensure decking is not put in a shady spot and that it is laid correctly so that it does not get slippery)

Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

Award Winner

• By incorporating raised beds in your design you create interest and height and they are much easier to tend than borders at ground level. Chunky treated timber (sleepers) are easy to lay and look clean and modern • Reduce the size of your lawn. Whilst it is always preferable to have some lawn in the garden downsizing it will mean less time spent mowing and more time sat on your new patio with a glass of wine • Be bold and go contemporary. After years of allowing the children to dominate your garden style, update your look by using clean simple lines • Create the ‘room outside’ theme by using lighting - and by having comfortable rattan sofas, you can use your outside room all year round Last year I bought an outside bioethanol fuel fire for our decked area. Hubby and myself spend many an hour staring into the flames. After all, when the kids have grown up and left, we could all do with a bit of romance in our lives (ha ha ha).

Range Rover

ou have got to ask why people spend so much on a piece of metal with a wheel attached to each corner. It almost seems a bit nutty when all most of us want is a tool to get us from A to B. But cars aren’t always about transportation. They can be about our emotions and our egos. Some of us use a new car as a status trophy – a badge of honour to show how well we’ve done in life. I suppose if we have a head-turner of a car in the Western world it’s about pleasure-seeking, too – and having an easier life. Let’s face it; we would rather have a shiny, luxurious car to travel around in than a rust bucket. And that need for selfsatisfaction can overrule the down-to-earth side of us when we are selecting a car. Some of us kick the word ‘practicality’ to the kerb anyway. I mean, good grief, in Great Britain we

by Tim Barnes-Clay

purchase more convertibles than many other countries in the EU. Why is this? After all, the UK is often dank and cloudy. Again, it comes down to that feel-good factor. Going topless when there’s sunshine in our country produces a massive rush - well, it does for me, anyway. It’s a better remedy for melancholia than a happy pill from the GP, I’d bet. But being prescribed a drop top car isn’t likely to happen at the doctor’s! Speaking of fresh-air motoring, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible has been launched recently. The looks of this SUV take a bit of getting used to, but they grow on you. As the fifth fellow of the Range Rover club – and the first convertible – Land Rover believes the all-new car will play a key part in continuing Range Rover’s tale of success, forging a fresh SUV sector. If industry professionals’ prophecies about a 20 per cent

83

expansion in the international SUV market over the next five years prove accurate, then, the car firm has nothing but sunbeams heading towards it. The Range Rover Evoque Convertible has a material roof that can be triggered on the move – as long as the SUV isn’t doing more than 30mph.The five-layer top will fold down in around 18 seconds and it will go back up in approximately 21 seconds.

Inside, the colossal InControl Touch Pro nav is pleasing – and, more crucially, it works very well. Genuinely, the pinch-to-zoom function is as quick as Apple’s iPad or iPhone. The Range Rover Evoque drop-top will seat four people and, for a convertible, it has an adequate 251-litre load area, too. The other good thing is that the roof opens and closes inaudibly and it tucks away compactly, instead of piling-up on the car’s tailgate.

Fast Facts 0-62 mph: 10.3 secs Combined mpg: 49.6 Engine: 2.0 litre turbo diesel Max. power (PS): 180 CO2: 149 g/km Price: £51,700

84 You can go for either a petrol unit or a diesel engine, buoyed by turbo power. This is all linked up to a smooth-operating nine-speed automatic ‘box, and all-wheel drive. The 2.0 turbo diesel is the best engine if you’re after economy, returning around 49.6mpg on average. The diesel Evoque Convertible shifts from zero to 62mph in 10.3 seconds, which is 1.3 seconds longer than the hard-top Coupe’s sprint - but both manage a top end of 121mph. The 240PS petrol propelled power unit is nippier, getting to 62mph in 8.6 seconds. On and off-road, the non-tin-top SUV seems just as gifted as its hard-topped sibling – with indistinguishable clearances, and a mutual 500mm wading depth. Indeed, at the car’s European launch in the French Alps, the Evoque Convertible worked its way up, down – and through - everything asked of it – including deep snow. I doubt many motorists going for a roofless Range Rover will take the trouble with the off-roading part – but it is reassuring to know the SUV can do more than just look sexy in affluent suburbs. The all-new Range Rover Evoque Convertible

is being made at Land Rover’s Halewood plant, alongside the five-door and Coupe versions, and it is on sale in over 170 markets around the world. Prices kick off at around £47,500, which is £5,200 more than a Range Rover Evoque Coupe with a roof.

A view from

The Lump

Local gossip, gripes and goings-on pub in Scholes. The place was packed, as usual, and Elvis took refreshments. Later, at about 10pm, Elvis did a few numbers for the astonished locals. It was a night to remember. Elvis and Co left with the last few customers at 4am.” Completely credible. But not the 4am lock-in. That never happened in Wigan. Ever. Elvis - pictured somewhere other than Wigan

All Shook Up The subject of ‘fake news’ has been in the... err.. news recently. Apparently, it’s to do with people spreading untrue stories on Facebook, and people believing them. None of which is remotely new in Wigan. Consider this yarn I was sent a few years back about Elvis’s clandestine visit to Wigan: “He landed in Prestwick, Scotland, in 1960. After a brief walk around and a cup of Scottish tea, Elvis begged his security to visit the North West. Reluctantly, Colonel Tom Parker let him go, in a taxi, to Liverpool. Six hours later, bad weather forced them to take a detour and they stopped at a

Banana republic The only thing the Northern Powerhouse seems to have generated so far is a lot of protests from locals who are refusing to let their local green belt be buried under millions of tonnes of concrete. Civil servants and lobbyists usually roll their eyes with lofty disdain whenever a new protest group forms. They even have their own name for them - the Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone Brigade (or B.A.N.A.N.A for short). This time, however, it feels different, and I hear moves are afoot to very quietly ditch the GM Spatial Framework Plan, and start again. The general consensus is that it’s a dog’s breakfast which needs to be thrown in the bin. Perhaps not so ‘bananas’ after all then.

It’s in the bag Back in the day when policeman were much older than you, Wigan’s individual markets were thriving. Not so these days. Even the main Wigan Market - once the real ‘jewel in the crown’ - has had some difficult times. So news of three month rent-free period has been largely welcomed by traders. I popped into the market just the other week and I have to say that spirits seemed high. Surely it’s about time markets came back into fashion? They’re great places, and much more interesting than the dull, uniform supermarkets which have infected almost every town in the UK. And what’s more, in a market, you won’t have to pay 5p for a plastic bag. What more could you want?

Off the rails I went to watch the latest crowdpuller, Trainspotting, recently. Oh good I thought, a film about my favourite hobby. All those pristine engines... the sight of smoke pluming around rolling hills to the sound of John Betjeman poems... very idyllic indeed. Two hours later, I arrived home shaken. Be warned - it’s a film about many things, but certainly not trainspotting.
