#wherenext Walking through Liverpool Airport at 0445am a couple of days ago, en route (indirectly) to a city break in Seville, I noticed a walkway with quality images from many of the popular locations that you can fly to from the airport. Themed #wherenext, the selection included imagery from Barcelona, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice, Madrid and many other European destinations. We’ve been lucky enough to live at a time when cheap air travel has made for easy access to many European cities, and, probably like you, we’ve loved the opportunity to explore new places and experience different cultures. For us, having a city break to look forward to helps to manage the day to day stress of ordinary life. How times change. Skipping back a generation, the caravan parks of north Wales were pretty much the nearest my parents ever got to foreign travel (apart from my Dad’s national service in the Middle East). Along with many other working class families, we had one weeks holiday a year and we always had a great time, even though it still amazes me that a family of eight could have ever fitted into that one static caravan. With the possibility of Brexit still looming large on the horizon, I wonder whether this will inhibit the next generation’s European travel experiences. Will Europe still be accessible and enjoyable, or will the so-called ‘Project Fear’ predictions come true? Not long now, and I guess we’ll find out.. See you next time

Feel Good with

Fitbit

Activity trackers can be useful tools for monitoring our exercise levels, sleep schedule and heart rate. But before you splash the cash, ask yourself whether you think you’ll benefit from one. Do you exercise regularly? Lots of people buy a Fitbit or its equivalent because they think it will help them to exercise consistently. But these devices are not magic bullets. If you make any and every excuse NOT to exercise then a Fitbit won’t change that - you’ll simply avoid exercise with a gadget strapped to you. Would you wear it, and use it? For a fitness tracker to give you actionable data you need to wear it almost all of the time, even while asleep. Some people can’t wear watches or

jewellery while they are at work, others hate the feeling of anything on their wrist. If you don’t wear it then it can’t do its job, so it’s not worth buying one. Will you use the app? You’ll need to download the app to your phone and use it if you want to make use of the data your activity tracker collects. Interacting with your device and the app is key to success, so if you can’t commit, don’t buy. Are you data obsessed? If you don’t care about specifics and are happy with just eating a bit less and exercising a bit more, an activity tracker might be a waste of money for you. If you have a medical condition or are in training for an event, or just enjoy looking at data, then having organized and detailed information at your fingertips is a great resource. Are you competitive?

Donkey Home Saved Green-belt land in Wigan that plays home to a number of Blackpool donkeys has been saved. The Bell close to Kitt Green was earmarked for development as part of the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, which would have seen 170 new houses and a large industrial space built on the farmland. That land included Latham Farm, whose stables housed the donkeys during winter. The local community responded to the proposed changes with outrage, including the Gillian Morris who owns a farm on the land and campaigned for change. ‘We’ve tried to keep [the spatial framework draft] at the forefront of everyone’s minds, but we were concerned that things had gone quiet,’ she said. ‘It’s a nice way to start the new year, that’s for sure.’ Revisions to the Spatial Framework plan saw the amount of at-risk green-belt reduce by more than 50%.

Haigh for The Friends of Haigh Hall Heritage and Open Access for All are petitioning for the removal of restrictions to public walkways in the grounds of Wigan’s historic hall. Haigh Hall – now a luxury hotel leased to Contessa Hotel Group – in its current incarnation dates back to 1825 after the demolition of the Norman hall which previously occupied the site. It is inextricably entangled with the borough’s heritage, being used as a military hospital during both World Wars, then as an exhibition space and wedding venue. Haigh Woodland Park continues to be open to the public and boasts a model railway, adventure golf and a high ropes course, along with many woodland walking routes. However, these routes may be at risk of closure if Wigan Council don’t step in, worries a spokesperson of the Friends of Haigh Hall Heritage group. ‘When I first discovered the plans for Haigh Hall to be

All

turned into a hotel with a restaurant, spa and gym I was a little surprised and very pleased,’ they explain. ‘But one day I walked up to the hall and noticed that gates had been erected and were in fact locked. As the tremendous view of the Hall came into view, it was marred by tarmac and road markings – our path had been converted into a road, apparently without consent and against one of the clauses in the lease Wigan Council holds with the tenants.’ They met a petitioner who explained Lord Crawford’s covenant in fact appeared to forbid the closure of public right of way paths – and that this path was promoted on the Wigan Council website as a public walkway. Since the group confronted the Council on the matter, the walk has been removed from the site. Even after twenty years of public usage, as the path did not feature on a definitive map of the area, the Council argued it was not a protected right of way. Permanent signs have also been introduced redirecting the public away from the Hall at the

Haigh Hall land train in the 1970s

21 Mowpin Lodge entrance and the rear of the Hall. An alternative panoramic route was put in place for visitors, but this was deemed unsuitable by many wheelchair users and people with mobility issues or pushchairs. The Earl of Crawford, whose family had a seat at Haigh Hall until 1947 when it was purchased by Wigan Corporation, wrote in a letter to the Town Clerk prior to the sale, stating: ‘The Hall and the Plantations have meant much in the life of the District. I have put in the forefront of my mind my intention that these benefits should be available to the public to an even greater degree than hitherto and in perpetuity.’ Further problems have arisen as hotel renovations continue. One petitioner addressed one of the major concerns: that access for disabled visitors is becoming more and more difficult. ‘I saw first-hand how a disabled lady was subjected to her carers struggling to push her along the path to be met with locked gates, which meant they could not access the toilet and café area they were trying to get her to. We had to move the side fencing to allow her to pass through. The closed gates create a health and safety hazard for wheelchair users.’ Another commented: ‘Haigh Hall has always been open to the public and loved by everyone. My family’s commemoration bench was torn up from the side of the Hall and found in a trash pile away from the well-used pathways. My grandparents’ commemorative plaques were on there, and we were given no warning or notice. Luckily we managed to salvage and replace ours, but others weren’t so lucky.’ Although extensive renovation work has been underway at the Grade-II* listed building to convert its rooms into luxury accommodation, restaurants and event spaces, local residents fear they are losing essential parts of their heritage. ‘The Hall is where my nan and grandad used to take me on a day out, it’s where my dad first took me fishing, and where I went collecting conkers every year,’ the Friends spokesperson continues. ‘It’s

where my children learned to ride a bike. It’s where generations of my family and other families have walked and stood and taken a moment to appreciate the wonderful view as far as the Welsh hills. It’s part of our culture – and that’s why the Haigh Hall Heritage group was formed, so people could demonstrate that they care.’ The council have insisted that the gates will only be locked when an event is taking place at the Hall, but with no usable alternative available for visitors with restricted mobility, this might not be enough. The Friends’ petition was started in response to the access restrictions, and has at time of writing reached over 2,500 supporters. The group is also in the process of applying to the local Highways Authority to have the gated route labelled a Public Right of Way. Whether due to the Hall’s extensive history, fond childhood memories or the lack of public consultation in the decision making process, the cause is clearly close to the hearts of Wiganers across the borough. If you’d like to show your support for the petition, which aims to ensure open access to Haigh Hall, head over to www.care2.com and search Haigh Hall, or find Friends of Haigh Hall Heritage and Open Access for All on Facebook. Alternatively, call 07949 840818 to have your say.

Run

Wigan

The Run Wigan Festival returns this March. The festival, which includes a half marathon, a ten miler, a 5K run and a family mile, brings runners from across the borough together in support of local charity Joining Jack. Each event helps to raise money for the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a progressive muscle wasting disease which is diagnosed in around 100 boys per year in the UK. Wigan boy Jack Johnson was diagnosed with DMD in 2011, and since then his family have dedicated themselves to raising money and awareness for the disease, which currently has no cure. Run Wigan Festival is just one way to support the cause. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or a complete beginner, the festival has something for you! Each event is marshalled by Joining Jack volunteers, and promises to be an exciting opportunity to get active for a great cause. Better yet

part in runs or cycles, volunteering, sponsoring a participant or helping tell our story through social media. ‘This year I know we are going to be even bigger and better – and take us one step closer to changing lives,’ she added. The Run Wigan Festival is just one of the ways you can get involved in fundraising for Joining Jack this year. On Sunday, June 30 the Wigan Bike Ride takes place, featuring both a 50 mile main ride and a 5 mile family ride. To date more than 1,200 riders have taken part in the event, which has so far raised £60,000 for the cause. Then, in September, the Wigan 10K returns in its seventh incarnation. 2019’s event will see the race’s 20,000th runner taking part on Sunday, September 1. The race takes place on closed roads.

– in true Wigan fashion, every half-marathon and 5K finisher receives a free pie and a goodie bag

Each of the events in the Run Wigan Festival has its own entry fee and route, details of which can be found at www.runwiganfestivals.co.uk

The races take place on Sunday, March 17 at various times from 9:30am and start in the town centre.

For more information about Joining Jack, head to www.joiningjack.org

Jack’s mum Alex Johnson is keen to continue fundraising to truly make a difference for DMD sufferers. ‘From small acorns these events have grown to be bigger than we ever thought possible when Joining Jack was launched in 2012. Last year we raised an unbelievable £100,000 thanks to the support and generosity of everyone involved, whether taking

Bygone

Graffiti

When we think of graffiti, our minds often stray to back alleys or industrial bridges, to teenagers in balaclavas armed with spray paint, but the North West Historic Graffiti Survey aims to change perceptions of graffiti and give it a closer look. Though widely debated as an art form, graffiti at least gives us a valuable insight into socio-political and cultural contexts of bygone eras. The Wigan Archaeology Society recently got involved with the Manchester-based survey to explore Standish’s iconic church, St. Wilfrid’s. The Grade-I listed building originated in the thirteenthcentury but mostly rebuilt in the sixteenth, with

only a fraction of its original structure remaining. The church’s original parish spanned from The Boar’s Head in Wigan to Bamber Bridge in the north, then from Shevington to Anderton and Adlington eastwards. The graffiti found by volunteers mainly consisted of initials and attached dates, but society volunteers soon discovered something more interesting: protective marks. ‘Apotropaic or protective marks are often found around doors or other entrances, supposedly to trap demons as they try to enter the building,’ Bill explains. These instances of graffiti often provide evidence for contemporary beliefs which are neglected in surviving historical texts, and these apotropaic marks are one such example. Notorious for warding off witches or other evil entities, similar marks have been located at the Tower of London, Shakespeare’s birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, and churches nationwide. St. Wilfrid’s, with its long and vibrant history, was a perfect place to survey historical graffiti. ‘Very often ancient graffiti is found on the woodwork of old buildings, but in St. Wilfrid’s most of that was replaced in the nineteenth century’, explains Bill Aldridge, secretary for the Wigan Archaeology Society. ‘Its wooden roof is original and richly carved, but its inaccessibility deemed it outside of our study. Instead, we discovered a large amount of graffiti on the original wooden door to the spiral staircase.’

29

30 The church’s rebuild was funded by the Standish family, devout Catholics who were not allowed to worship there during the Reformation, and had to enter instead through a side chapel built for their private use. The Society recorded over one hundred previously unidentified marks at St. Wilfrid’s, including masons’ marks in the form of pentagon stars, double Vs and Ts, dating back to the church’s construction. ‘Our team of volunteers spent their weekends, sometimes recording in cramped conditions, completing the survey’, says Bill. ‘We are currently compiling the final report, which will form part of the final archive for the survey.’ If you’re interested in learning more about Wigan Archaeology Society and what they do, visit http:// www.wiganarchsoc.co.uk/ or go along to one of their monthly meetings. These take place on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm at the Standish Suite in the Brocket Arms for historical lectures and presentations. Meetings cost £2 per member or £3 per guest to attend.

Snowdrop

Season

February is here – meaning it’s officially snowdrop season. The beginning of the month is your best bet for beautiful displays of the snowy flowers, and a sure sign that spring is just around the corner. For many people, snowdrops – or Galanthus, to give them their Latin name - symbolise hope and rebirth as the snow melts away to make way for the warmer weather. Originally introduced in the UK back in the Elizabethan era, the delicate flowers make for some picturesque winter walks. Lancashire knows how to celebrate the season with the best of ‘em – here are the best places to see snowdrops this February. Gorse Hill Nature Reserve in Aughton is holding a Snowdrop Sunday event on February 17th from 12pm-4pm. Enjoy a self-guided walk of the snowdrop display in Cabin Wood and enjoy refreshments in the Cabin Café. The pathway has full wheelchair access and it’s free to attend, but donations to the reserve are welcome. Bank Hall in Bretherton also holds Snowdrop Sundays across February. Each Sunday from

February 10th until March 3rd between 12pm and 4pm, experience woodland strolls through carpets of snowdrops, and get the scoop on the Hall’s ongoing restoration project. Refreshments are available and dogs on short leads are welcome – adult entry costs £3 while children go free. Dunham Massey is also a snowdrop hotspot. Their 7-acre Winter Garden is the largest one in the UK, and home to over 1,600 winter shrubs and trees. Dunham’s snowdrops are truly breath-taking to behold, spanning across the garden and allowing for some hearty winter frolicking. See Dunham Massey’s website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ dunham-massey for opening times; entrance fees apply to non-members. A little further afield, Lytham Hall hosts annual Snowdrop Season weekends in February, with a floral trail through the parkland and a stall for you to purchase some of your own. The Hall usually hosts a fairy trail for children to wind their way around the woodland. Don’t forget to check out our Events2Go guide on page 73 for more floral fun this February.

Get that

Job

Tired of the New Year, New You mantras already? Not to worry – with our top tips for cover letters, you’ll have secured that new job in no time. It’s important not to use the same cover letter for every single job. Sending identical letters for each role might save you time, but likelihood is it won’t secure you your dream position. Generic phrases which offer no specificity about the company, industry, or role you’re applying for indicate lack of interest to most hiring managers. Always refer to the job by its title and description and explain how your skills could benefit the specific role and company, not just the industry as a whole. Never talk about your personal life, or share

irrelevant details in a professional document, it definitely won’t improve your employability. Don’t mention the reasons for leaving your current job or give overly detailed justifications for career breaks. Keep to the point and focus on the job you’re applying for. Focus on what the employer wants, not what you want. Avoid detailing your hopes and dreams and don’t explain what you’d get out of the job. A cover letter isn’t about being able to fulfil your objectives, it’s about proving to a recruiter than you can fulfil theirs. So, talk about your achievements, skills, and experience only if they relate directly to the role and emphasise what they would get from employing you, not vice versa. If you lack experience in a certain area don’t focus on that. Instead focus on the strengths you possess that will benefit you in the role.

FREE PICKUP & DELIVERY

Desperation is different to enthusiasm! Begging for the job isn’t going to add anything to your selling potential. Keep over-the-top adjectives and hyperbole to a minimum because there’s a fine line between showing a genuine interest and trying too hard. Don’t forget to proofread and check for grammatical errors. Learn a Language Want to learn a new language in 2019? It’s not as hard as you think! With plenty of free resources online and classes to be found locally, you can get hooked on language learning this year. New words? - You may not need to learn as many as you think! In English just 300 words make up 65% of all written material. You can buy or make decks of flash cards of these words. There is even a flash card app called Anki which presents words at precisely the right intervals to maximise memorisation. Cognates - These are words which are spelled almost the same in English and which have the same meaning. In French, lots of ‘ion’ words are spelled the same even though they are pronounced differently: action, nation, communication etc. In Spanish the same words end in ‘ción’ and in Italian ‘zione’. There are also words such as hélicoptère (French) or aeropuerto (Spanish) which are similar enough to the English word that you will recognise them immediately. Interaction - You need to hear and speak the language consistently. Look up radio stations,

YouTube channels, news websites, and blogs in the language you want to learn. Ask friends whether they know a native speaker who would converse with you for half an hour in exchange for coffee and cake! There are groups dedicated to language exchange on Facebook too. By forcing yourself to converse you will improve very quickly. Free Resources – The Duolingo app does just what it says on the tin, with online flashcards and interactive assistance. The BBC also has introductory courses for around 40 different languages, while Omniglot.com is a great open-source resource to all manner of languages, and I found fluentu.com brilliant for Spanish. Branching

Out

by Jess Phillips Tracing your ancestors through a family tree is a great way to learn more about the generations before you, and to discover more about yourself in the process. Though it requires dedication and a bit of hard graft, researching the people who came before you can be an incredibly gratifying process. And once you know how to get started, it can be a lot of fun too. When Local Life’s very own Design Manager and Wigan-born Peter Bretherton delved into his family tree, he found a legacy which culminated in a stay at Rainhill Hospital for one of his ancestors – you really never know quite what you’ll find. Peter didn’t know his grandparents. He decided he wanted to know more Peter Bretherton about them – and the rest of his family – when other relatives began their own family history research, and became determined to uncover more about his ancestors. The earliest Brethertons Peter traced back lived in Ulnes Walton in Chorley. John Bretherton was born in 1793 and baptised in Leyland; in the 1851 census John was found to be a farmer of 61 acres at Runshaw Moor, two miles east of Croston. Two generations later, however, is where things began to show a tragic side to the Bretherton family tree, beginning with John Bretherton’s grandson James. Through relatives’ accounts, census records and physical documents – which are a great resource for finding concrete information such as birthplaces, home addresses and maiden names – Peter delved deeper into his family tree.

James Bretherton was born in 1857 in Euxton, Chorley, one of seven children. In his childhood, James became friendly with Ann Robinson whose father ran the Plough Inn – which is still in business today - just across the road from Runshaw Farm where James lived. The couple eventually married in 1879 and moved to Chorley Lane – now Chorley Road in Standish – to begin a family, raising six children together: John, James, Elizabeth, Thomas, William and Alice. Tragedy was lurking just around the corner. Ann Robinson died in 1896 aged just 39 years old, and James remarried another Ann – Ann Churchouse from Aspull – just a few months later. The couple had one child together before Ann too died of pneumonia in 1902, and one week later James’ son died of the same disease at just 19 years old. However, it wasn’t until 1906 that young Alice suffered a horrific accident which left her disfigured and which traumatised her father for life.

‘..the last straw’ Alice was thirteen and helping out at the local vicar’s home where his wife was in labour. ‘The midwife sent Alice downstairs to bring something from the mantelpiece,’ Peter explains. ‘Unfortunately she was wearing an apron that caught fire as she reached up to grasp it. She ran upstairs for help but the midwife ordered her out of the room, so Alice ran outside the house, where no doubt her clothes burned all the more readily.’ Alice spent the next twelve months in hospital, not expected to survive. She managed to defy the odds, but her father James was never the same again. ‘It must have been the last straw,’ Peter theorises,

40 ‘having lost his first wife in 1896, his second wife and nineteen year old son in 1902 and then some four years later, his daughter maimed and disfigured for life.’ James’ daughter Lizzy was awakened one night to suspicious noises below her bedroom, and crept downstairs to discover her father preparing to set fire to their home. On another occasion, she found him out in the garden with a loaded gun; Lizzy wrestled the weapon from him and attempted to destroy it with an axe. The gun went off, but thankfully nobody was injured. James was eventually admitted to Rainhill Hospital where he died in 1911. Meanwhile, Alice went to live with a wealthy uncle near Southport, who left her a small legacy. When Lizzy’s husband Francis went off to war, the then 24 year old Alice moved in with her sister in Haigh, taking a job at the local Post Office. Francis never returned home from war, and Lizzy died in 1928, leaving Alice to care for her children. Alice passed away in March 1976 in the hospital

where she had endured countless operations to treat the burns she suffered some seventy years prior. Through a combination of sources, Peter was able to trace all the way from 1793 to the present day.

Double Check It All It’s important not to add all the information you find to your family tree all at once, warns Margaret Hegan, who often liaises with the Wigan Family & Local History Society. It can be tempting to make names, birthdates and facts known on your family tree as soon as you source the information, but without checking these are correct, you could be misleading others who use your family tree as a way into their own. If you’re going to make information public, make

Margaret Hegan

41 sure you double check it all beforehand. It’s a good idea to file this information away privately until you’re certain it’s factual. Margaret hit a few obstacles when conducting her own research twenty-five years ago; namely that she had moved to Wigan from Hertfordshire, and at the time, nothing was available online. She has since found that her Tarleton-born great-grandfather was a master carpenter who worked on the Leeds & Liverpool canal for 51 years. Richard Forshaw died in 1926 aged 83, just two years after his retirement from the Wigan boatyard. ‘Richard married Mary Gill, a boatwoman, and that’s how my family history research journey started – with the canal families,’ Margaret explains. ‘That’s also how the boatfamilies website was born, where over the years we’ve shared information and encouraged each other – along with discovering relatives we didn’t know about.’ A branch of the Ormskirk & District Family History Society, www.boatfamilies.website features information about canal family trees and surnames associated with the Leeds & Liverpool canal and its connected waterways. It’s a great tool for finding out more about ancestors who worked on the canals in the local area. Joining a family history research society can also help you along your journey into the past. Not only will you gain access to new resources and a veritable font of knowledge from experienced researchers, but you’ll meet new people who are also interested in learning more about their family trees – and who knows, maybe a distant relative! The Wigan Family & Local History Society meet on the second Wednesday of the month at St. Andrew’s Parish Centre on Woodhouse Lane, Springfield (WN6 7LZ), and aim to provide support, help and ideas for anyone interested in conducting their own research. The society also run a regular help desk at the Museum of Wigan Life on Library Street every Monday from 10:30am-12:30pm. Membership costs £14 for UK members or £25 for overseas members. Interested in researching your own family tree? Read our top tips to get started. s The first step in beginning your family history search is to gather as much information as you can. Whether this is vague facts from your own recollections or first-hand accounts from close family members, write it all down. s It’s a good idea to start an organisation system – labelled folders, physical or electronic, are great for locating information quickly, while photo albums organised by theme or date can link you to specific periods in your family history. Find a method that works best for you, but remember to collect any and all information you find – however insignificant it first appears. s Physical documents tend to be the key to uncovering more about your ancestors – and you never know what might be lurking in the loft or at a relative’s house. Archives also hold census records or military service documents which can be incredibly useful when conducting in-depth research – head over to www.gov.co.uk/get-copymilitary-service-records for more information. s Local sources are perfect if you know where your ancestors originated. Wigan and Leigh Archives hold a vast array of documents and a wealth of information to kick-start your research. Based out of Leigh Town Hall (WN7 1DY), you can contact the archives online at www.archives.wigan.gov. uk or by calling 01942 404430. For records in the Manchester registration district, try searching the archives at Manchester Central Library, which might give you some additional information. s Local museums can also be a great method of getting inspired if you hit a block. They’ll usually go into detail about local industry, and might even mention a few surprising surnames... s Another great local resource is the Lancashire BMD Project. This website compiles birth, death

and marriage records from across the county in an accessible search tool, with accounts dating back to 1837 - the year civil registration started. s Lancashire Parish Clerks provides baptism, marriage and burial records compiled from a huge variety of sources including parish registers, churchwardens accounts, land tax records and business directories. s Never underestimate the microfiche. Usually squirrelled away at the back of a musty library room, microfiche readers allow users to search through local historical newspapers, which can be a key tool in finding specific events or incidents. Although this can be a laborious process, microfilm records are labelled by date, so it works best if you have a starting point in mind. s If browsing the archives for census records and trawling through microfilm seems like a daunting process, don’t be put off just yet – there are a lot of useful websites that can help you get started. Sites such as Ancestry.com charge you a membership fee but boast huge record collections and a family tree tool. Start by adding some family members to the electronic tree, and find new leads through the site’s suggestions. Meanwhile, free sites such as Find A Grave and Billion Graves help locate tombstones across the world, while allowing you to add personal history information to each grave. It’s worth looking around at various genealogy websites to find which is most suited to your research. s Another useful website is the National Library of Scotland (www.nls.uk/digital-resources), where you can search by area for historical maps. It’s great for envisioning where ancestors would have roamed and for finding old addresses for areas that have undergone name changes or where new roads have been built.

Hair Today Have you ever marked a life event by changing your hairstyle? Did you regret it, or did you feel free? Many people, most of them women, use haircuts as a marker for change. In films the main character often undergoes a makeover as a metaphor for the dramatic changes they undergo in the movie. Before the makeover things were bad; after the makeover things are good. Simples. Or is it? In real life hairdressers bear witness to this scenario frequently. We may not tell them directly, but often they will sense we’re on a mission to create a new improved version of ourselves; or a quick way to shed the past and move on.

But dramatic hairstyle changes while in the midst of a life crisis can prove ill-advised. Sometimes we’re not really after a new hairstyle, more a whole new life. And as satisfying as it is to leave a salon with a completely new look, we need to remember that our hair might look different, but our problems will remain the same. During a divorce, a bereavement or a health crisis we will experience a maelstrom of emotions: and one-minute chopping all our hair off will feel like the best decision in the world, but the next minute, when we look in the mirror and see a total stranger staring back at us it might feel terrifying. Yet hair is an important aspect of how we express

For her it was freeing to be able to wake, shower and be ready to go in minutes. I had my tousled waist-length hair cut to a chic bob when I started my first proper job in journalism. Like the caterpillar shedding the chrysalis I was ready to be someone new and the har salon was my chrysalis of choice. who we are and how we would like to be seen. Changing our hair is one of the easiest ways to send a signal to the world that we have changed. It can be a great tool to help us shed an outgrown ‘self’.

So, the next time you collapse into the hairdresser’s comfy chair intent on an image overhaul, just pause for a second and ask yourself why, and whether now is the best time.

Look up! And get

more space

at home for just

£297

+ VAT

We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floorspace in an average home. Storage space that can be quickly and easily accessed can be really valuable to homeowners who now need the spare bedroom for a new arrival, or who find getting the Christmas tree down each year just a little bit harder. So shouldn’t we be making the most of that space over our heads ? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton eleven years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the St Helens area and is run by skilled local, Mark Pennington , who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for.

“We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says Mark. “This is a low-cost and simple solution that’s affordable to most, and certainly more cost effective than locking your possessions away in a remote warehouse. For just £297+VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. Mark provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour and the quality of the work is monitored independently by the Guild of Master Craftsmen. Already a trusted name in the North West, over 2500 homeowners have enjoyed the benefits we offer, with more having the work carried out every day. There are a range of packages available to suit all pockets – so whether you just want a ladder installing or you want ladder, boarding and light, call More

What had been a dirty and unusable space for the last 10 years, is now light, safe and absolutely HUGE!!

Paul and Simon have this week extended my loft opening, boarded my loft and installed a loft ladder. Just a run of the mill occurrence for some but I live in a tiny terraced cottage, over 160 years old with a really shallow loft you can only stand up in one place and with an opening that has to come into my bedroom because there is no landing area. I didn’t think it could be done, but they have and I now have a home for the suitcases, Christmas tree and decorations and any number of other items I don’t really need. I am really pleased with the outcome, with the very fair cost and I would have no hesitation in recommending them. Margaret

Swimming is often overlooked as a workout in favour of cardio-heavy routines. But it can be just as good if not better - than hitting the gym. Here’s how. It’s a full body workout. Swimming is a great mixture of cardio and strength, improves endurance and works out all the muscle groups. It can help improve mental health. The motion of moving through water is very meditational, and requires a level of focus which can help reduce stress levels. It also boosts your mood throught the release of serotonin. It’s sweat-free. The water constantly cools your body down and reduces the uncomfortable feeling that hits after a gym session.

You’re unlikely to injure yourself - swimming is nonweight-bearing, so the risk of injury is very small. It has long-term benefits. Swimming has been found to lower blood pressure, reduce joint pain, improve lung capacity and heart function, and increase bone strength. Swimming is for everyone. Whether you’re old or young, super fit or getting there, almost anyone can swim - that’s why it’s used so often in physiotherapy. Contrary to popular belief, swimming is actually a great calorie burner, and burns more calories than running! By Tracey Anderson

The latest and oldest ways Chiropractic helps you… The biggest question people ask is “can you help me?”. The answer is almost always “yes” and “would you like to know how many ways?” Back pain, sciatica, neck pain and headaches, and many other problems of the skeleton, nerves and muscles are what we are best known for helping people gain relief and recover quality of life from. Over our last 25 years, we have enhanced the treatment methods we use so they are exceptionally gentle & comfortable, so much so that we often work on babies while they sleep. People in their 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s are also experiencing improvements in arthritic symptoms, mobility, balance, confidence, quality of life and wellbeing. For people with osteoporosis, our methods are ideal. You will find that with Chiropractic care as gentle as ours, your body accepts it beautifully, which helps you heal better and more fully. We keep improving the technology we use to discover what’s wrong, right and could be better with you, which means better, fuller and longer lasting results. This includes digital x-ray pictures of your spine & skeleton and our scanner to assess not just your spine, but the nerves inside it, muscles around it, brain at the top of it and all the organs it connects with. This means you can be sure of getting the best care and results.

Chiropractic care helps your brain and body to work together harmoniously, which is the basis of health and healing. For this reason, we are seeing patients achieve many improvements beyond back pain and sciatica. Patients now come to us because they have other health problems, including their nervous system and organs, and would like to work on enhancing their own ability to heal these rather than just masking symptoms. Parents have begun bringing their children for check-ups & if they’ve been labelled as autistic, ADHD, developmental problems, movement and learning impaired. We’ve seen some encouraging changes.

People now travel to us if they’ve not experienced results with standard Chiropractic elsewhere or simply because they want the best. We are now receiving patients from Africa, not just Wigan! As our patients heal and recover quality of life, we congratulate them, not ourselves Chiropractic doesn’t claim to cure or treat anything whatsoever – it simply helps you do your own healing, which is why it’s so effective.

Heal better, Feel better, Live better

The Packed Lunch

Problem

I decided to save money and eat more healthily in 2019, so I knew I’d have to start packing my own lunches. It’s taken until now really get on board with this idea because every time I contemplated the effort of making a packed lunch every day I became bogged down by what I perceived as problems – here’s how I solved them. It takes too much time to pack a lunch. It’s such a faff...or is it? I timed how long it took to walk to the deli or drive to the garage, wait in the queue to be served and get back to work. Then I timed how long it took me to prepare a lunch the night before. Turns out making your own lunch is way faster! Who knew? I’m hungry again by mid-afternoon. So pack more food! DUH! I make sure I had a sugarfree protein bar, a banana, or a bag of nuts in reserve in case I had a mid-afternoon dip. That way I don’t

head for the bakery or start mainlining chocolates from the ever-present boxes around our office. Formulaic lunches. When I was at primary school my mum packed me a ham sandwich, an apple, some carrot sticks and a wagon wheel, pretty much every day. When I started making my own lunches, I used the same formula (minus the wagon wheel). What did I enjoy eating? I like leftover casseroles and risottos, so I made extra. I like open sandwiches, Danish style, on Rye bread so I bought the ingredients, and I arranged lunch swaps with a friend, so she caters Thursday and I do Friday. A little creative thinking keeps things interesting and I haven’t missed nipping to the deli. In fact, walking round the park instead is a much needed breath of fresh air and gets the exercise in too! By Tracey Anderson

drinks instead of a chocolate bar or low-fat popcorn instead of crisps will fill the hole without compromising much on taste.

We were brought up being told not to eat between meals but now it seems that we literally can’t help helping ourselves, with four per of Brits admitting to being addicted to snacking and finding it impossible to quit. A third of us would rather give up alcohol than snacks and 13% of smokers said they’d rather kick their nicotine habit than give up chocolate, biscuits and crisps. Not to worry, though - these top tips from Diet Chef nutritionist Caron Leckie to avoid snacking will have you kicking the habit in no time. Keeping a food diary can help you identify your snacking reality. Identify where you’re most likely to grab a snack from and clear out the stash.

Distract yourself. Occupy your mind - go for a walk, deep clean the house or read a book and you’ll have forgotten all about the snacks. Cut the portions and sample a little of what you fancy instead. Make small changes. Don’t deprive yourself of everything at once, just reduce the snacks a little bit every day. Don’t forget drinks - substitute a fizzy drink for green tea or water to stop the calories adding up. Fill up on fruit and veg. Aiming for 5 portions a day will fill your belly and have you reaching for something healthier.

Legal & Finance

Look before you Leap Firstly, let me wish a Happy New Year to all Local Life readers - I hope you all had a peaceful Christmas break and that you are fully refreshed for the challenges 2019 will bring us. Throughout 2018 we were approached by a significant number of new clients who had been offered and had accepted very attractive early retirement and redundancy terms from their employers. Staff from Heinz, Royal Bank of Scotland, British Aerospace and Vauxhall approached us for advice and, for most of them, this was the first time in their lives that they been in possession of such large capital sums. They all needed to make really important decisions as to how best they should invest their lump sums to meet their needs in retirement, and some of these people had over £200,000 to invest. Unfortunately, quite a few approached us a little too late which ended up costing them many thousands of pounds in unnecessary tax because they had already taken their redundancy payments.

with a potential deal to finish, either through retirement or redundancy, you really need to be engaging with your financial adviser before committing to a course of action. In most instances, once you commit, it is unlikely that you will have the option to reverse the decision. Additionally, at this stressful time, many employees are normally presented with a number of options as to how they want to draw their pensions. They will need to decide on these options; Pension with a tax free lump sum? Pension without a lump sum? Annuity – Fixed/escalating and with/without a widow’s pension? Flexible access drawdown? It’s all quite daunting really, probably one of the biggest financial decisions you ever take, so it’s important that you ‘look before you leap’, as the wrong decision could cost you many thousands of pounds.

Any element of redundancy over and above £30,000 will be taxed at the employee’s marginal rate of tax. Consequently, a redundancy payment of, say £100,000, to a 40% tax payer is likely to result in a net payment of just £72,000 after tax has been deducted.

Should you not have your own professional adviser and you would like to speak with one of our team please give us a call on 01257 423800. The initial meeting is at our cost and is without any obligation on your part.

With sensible planning it is likely that in many instances this tax liability could be avoided or at the very least significantly reduced.

Property

Safe as

Houses

There’s a popular expression – Safe as Houses – which originated in Victorian times and which translates into ‘secure; with no risk of failure’. In times of political upheaval, prospective house buyers can be reluctant to commit to buying a home because people tend to put big financial decisions on hold until they feel it’s safe to invest their hard earned cash. UK house prices are generally tied into the health of the UK economy as a whole and, we know that on a local level, the Wigan housing market in 2018 was a little more restrained than in 2016 and 2017. I believe this restraint will continue into 2019 and some will question whether 2019 is a good year to buy a home in Wigan. My view is that property ownership in Wigan is always a good medium to long term investment. But I can understand why you may think that that I’m bound to say that, so I’ve pulled together a detailed analysis of home ownership in Wigan since the turn of the century. And the main headline news is that the average

Alan Batt Alan Batt is a member of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and has worked within the Wigan property market for over 30 years.

Wigan homeowner, having owned their property since the Millennium, has seen its value rise by more than 155%. That’s an average increase in value of £4,325 per year, or an 8.6% average increase. The graph below takes a look at the different property types in Wigan, and the profit made by each type. If you bought a detached home in Wigan back in Y2K, the average price paid was £94,151, and in 2018, the average price paid for a detached home in Wigan was £229,791, an increase in value of £135,640 (8%). If you bought a semi back in Y2K, then the average paid in Wigan at that time was £50,686, compared to the average in 2018 which was £133,255, an increase of £82,569 (9.2%) However, when you take the inflation figures into account over the past 18 years, then the true spending power of that profit is reduced to an average of £47,531 (£2,641 per year). For owners of detached properties those figures are £82,808 (£4,600 per year), and for owners of semi-detached, the figures are £50,408 (£2,800). Still nothing to sniff at…

67 So even though that period contains the 2008/09 Credit Crunch property market crash where, depending on the type of Wigan property, property

Buy to Let

values dropped between 15% and 20% in 18 months - house values remained, and still remain, a good medium to long term investment.

Trends

In every national survey I’ve seen recently, landlords still intend to increase their property portfolio in the medium to long term. This tells me that even though landlords have been hit with higher taxes, they still have faith in the buy to let market. The youngsters of Wigan see renting as a choice, giving them flexibility and options that being tied to a home cannot give, so demand will continue to grow and landlords will be able to enjoy increased rents and capital growth from their buy to let investments, providing that they work smarter in the future. Since the 1990’s, making money from investing in buy to let property was as easy as falling off a log. Looking forward though, with all the changes in the tax regime and balance of power, making those similar levels of return in the future won’t be so easy. The question is how do you, as a Wigan buy to let landlord, ensure that your success continues? Over the last ten years, I have seen the role of the forward thinking landlord evolve from a person

who just collected the rent to a more all-inclusive role. There are a handful of Wigan agents (including myself ) whom I would consider exemplary at this landlord portfolio strategy where they can give landlords a balanced structured overview of your short, medium and long-term goals, in relation to your required return on investment, yield and capital growth requirements. If you would like such advice, speak with your current agent or feel free to drop me a line. Email me on alan@alanbatt.co.uk or call on 01942 233999

Just 9 weeks to go! by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy Is your business ready for Making Tax Digital? With effect from 01 April 2019 there will be significant changes to the way you prepare and submit your quarterly VAT returns. All VAT registered businesses with an annual turnover above £85,000 will be required to keep digital records and submit their VAT return to HMRC through MTD compatible software. If your business runs on spreadsheets and manual records, you will be able to continue (for now at least), but you will still have to make changes to those spreadsheets so that they can link to HMRC by using bridging software. Assuming that you don’t want to pay fines to HMRC, doing nothing is not an option, so your plans to deal with this should already be in place and it is generally accepted that the best way for a business to prepare for Making Tax Digital is to switch to a cloud accounting software package. The good news is that switching to accounting

Runshaw Moor by Jess Phillips It’s fair to say that most of us prefer walks under a blue sky and dappled sunshine peeking through a leafy canopy, but in winter, it simply isn’t always possible. Still, there’s something atmospheric about hiking on an overcast day, and with an air temperature of about 2 degrees, our walk on Runshaw Moor turned out to capture this perfectly - and made us appreciate our pub stop even more. We begin at Worden Park (PR25 1DJ), a Leyland icon which was home to Worden Hall until 1941 when it was destroyed in a fire. Conservation work is still ongoing to the old conservatory, but all that remains of the hall itself are the outbuildings and the walled kitchen garden, the remaining historic buildings house an Arts and Crafts Centre - worth a visit at the end of the walk.

Leaving the car park we head straight for The Avenue and follow this west going out of the park and into Shaw Brook Road. About 200 metres after leaving the park you come to a bend in the road where you’ll find a public footpath off to your left. Take this path and keep to the right of the field. Going into the next field, continue along the right hand side until you come to the path and little footbridge (well, a thick plank) on your right. Cross over this - carefully! - and then keep to the left until you reach the end of the hedgerow. From here continue straight across the field to the stile opposite. After crossing, continue to follow the right-hand side of the field over another stile. From here go straight across and along the hedgerow, over another stile and onto Altcar Lane. Take a right

71 and then a left - this leads you onto what looks like a long, private driveway, but don’t worry, you’ll find a public footpath to the immediate left of the gates at the far end. This path brings you onto a farm track - head right along and continue for about 40 metres to the public footpath on your left. Climb over the stile and head along the left side of the field. Once you enter the next field, head diagonally across to the opposite corner and then straight across the next field to the far end. You’ll pick up

Head left at Runshaw Lane, passing the Plough Inn - or, if like us you’re hankering for a mid-walk snack and some warmth, take advantage of the friendly hospitality and stop off for a hearty pub lunch. Continue along Runshaw Lane until you reach Tithe Barn Lane on your left. Follow this to its end, going over the stile at the gates to Altcar Farm and then straight on and over the next stile into the field. Keep to the right and head into the next field, then just follow the valley. It’s worth a look back at the farmhouse to view the fancy gable wall of the farm house and barn. It was supposedly built like that to look pretty from Worden Hall. After you’ve crossed the ditch into the last field, watch out for the footbridge on the left which takes you back into Worden Park. This looked beautifully autumnal despite the winter weather during our walk, with fallen leaves surrounding the rushing stream. Back in the park, turn left and make your way towards the hall. There’s a good opportunity to rest your legs in the courtyard cafe, explore the Walled Garden, or try your luck navigating the hedge maze. Worden Park is also home to the Leyland Society of Model Engineers, who will let you have a ride on their miniature trains if the weather’s clement. Don’t forget to look out for the Cedar of Lebanon at the back of the courtyard - the tree was planted in

Aston Martin

Vantage by Tim Barnes-Clay

77 The new Aston Martin Vantage is the stuff of dreams for those who love luxury sports cars. As a lad, I never thought I’d get to sit in an Aston, let alone end up being invited to test-drive one.

Under the metal, the up-to-date Vantage is like its sibling, the elegant DB11. Both models house the Mercedes-Benz-sourced 4.0-litre V8 lump. Mind you; the twin-turbo assisted engine has been tuned so

But life sometimes has a way of working out if you’re prepared to put the graft in. I’m not necessarily talking about me; it’s Aston Martin who should be patting its own back. The company has worked like a dog to get the new Vantage right – and it’s paid off.

that it feels like it’s always belonged in Aston Martins. Stomp your foot on the accelerator and the car will shoot you from zero to 62mph in 3.6 seconds. It will then propel you to 195mph - if you’re in a place you can do that without losing your licence, or your life.

Why? Well, let’s begin with the looks. It’s awesome from the rear, with detailed lights and a rising rear spoiler. It’s a little less lively at the front, although the Vantage’s shark-nose is aggressively appealing. What really works, though, are the perfect proportions. The two-seater is sinuous – almost hunter-like in the way it appears poised to pounce on unsuspecting prey.

Open the Aston up, and you’re greeted with low-slung sports seats, but they’re easy to get comfortable in. Behind the wheel, the Vantage is cosseting, and the overall cabin is far less clinical than a Porsche 911’s. It’s traditional, yet it’s still thrilling. What’s more, the Benz-derived switchgear is nicely incorporated, and the controls are intuitive to use.

Fast Facts • 0-62 mph: 3.6 seconds • Combined mpg: 26.9 • Engine layout: 3,982cc 8-cylinder turbo petrol • Max. power (PS): 510 • CO2: 245 g/km • Price: £120,900

78 the eight-speed automatic gearbox do its thing, discloses a smooth change that’s matched to a remarkably biddable ride. Spool through Sport+ and Track settings, and the powertrain, damping and steering progressively alter the new Vantage’s temperament to make it angrier, wilder and noisier. Whichever mode you opt for, fun is always on the menu. As you might expect, the sports car isn’t meant to be the most practical vehicle – there’s not even a glovebox. And, as hinted at earlier, this is a motor without back seats, but you can just about get some golf clubs under the tailgate.

On British tarmac, the Aston delivers confidenceinducing handling with immediate reactions - and the brakes do a top job of erasing pace. I drove the Vantage around the meandering highways and byways of the Cotswolds, and it excelled.

Practicality aside, the new Vantage is as close to perfect as you can get. Pushing the Aston Martinbadged starter button brings the car to life with a roar. It’s a fulfilling sound, particularly with the fourpipe sports exhaust attached. Driving off in Sport (the most relaxed of the three settings) and letting

This state-of-the-art Aston Martin Vantage is the first to be spawned under the automaker’s fresh leadership line-up – and you can tell. Yes, a 911 will give you better practicality, but the rival Porsche won’t quite give you the feeling you get from driving a legendary British model.

Bring some

Award Winner

Va-va-voom to your garden! by Angie Barker

During the winter months I do have a tendency to bang on about evergreen structure in the garden. Box hedges, evergreen shrubs and trees do a wonderful job of binging interest to the garden, in even the darkest months. However the real joy of a garden for me, are herbaceous perennials – these are the plants which bring the ‘froth’ to a planting scheme, bringing colour and textural foliage to a border. The va-va-voom of the garden world. They plug the gaps between the structural planting. Herbaceous perennials are plants which, in the main, will die down in winter, disappearing beneath the soil and taking a rest during the worst of the weather, emerging again the following year. Some will flower in spring, some early summer, mid summer and autumn thereby providing almost year long flower and colour. There is a misconception that herbaceous plants are high maintenance. Well it is true that some can be, but if you choose the right ones, they can be very low maintenance and easy to grow without the need for staking or any particular attention. Here are some suggestions:

colours to chose from Spring – Aquilegia vulgaris. Many colours are available in single and double flower forms. Aquilegia vulgaris ‘William Guiness’ is a stunning one Early summer – Astrantia major – ‘Hadspen Blood’ is a lovely one and will tolerate shade Mid summer – Hardy Geraniums – lots and lots to chose from and suitable for all locations and soils – ‘Ann Folkard’ is beautiful and loves to scramble through other plants and it flowers for ages Late summer and into autumn– Rudbeckia fulgida var. deamii – gorgeous yellow cone flowers which attract butterflies. Penstemon Pensham ‘Plum Jerkum’ – hardier than some Penstemons Hubby loves these plants too for bringing colour to the garden. Even if he refers to them as “the yellow one”, “the blue one” or “the one in the middle”! The names aren’t important as long as they give you a pleasing effect. The garden centres will be bringing their herbaceous plants into stock over the next few weeks so take a look and bring some va-va-voom into your garden.

Late winter – Helleborus x hybridus. Lots of pretty

Angie is a qualified awardwinning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.
