I
n 20 years time or so, when someone asks you how you coped with COVID19 in 2020, how will you respond?
Will you tell them that you ignored health advice, that you were too busy to self-isolate when you should have done, and you behaved like a panicked pack animal, grabbing excess food which could have been shared with others? Or will you tell them how you acted selflessly and considerately, not just looking out for your own family, but also caring for the elderly and those in poor health? COVID19 is now barrelling towards us in a seemingly unstoppable fashion and, although most of us will shrug it off as we would a bad dose of flu, for others it will be fatal. For the next few months at least, the world will seem a scary place to us all, but to those who are elderly and have existing health problems, life could well be terrifying. Please do your best to be a good neighbour to the elderly and infirm and help them survive this crisis. Thank you Chris Pearce, Publisher chrisp@locallife247.co.uk

Trust Lends a Hand The National Trust recently announced that it was closing all pay-for-entry sites including houses, cafés and shops, due to the health scare surrounding COVID-19. However, the Trust is keeping many gardens and parklands open, free of charge, alongside coast and countryside, to encourage the nation to enjoy open space, while observing social distancing measures. Hilary McGrady, the Director General of the Trust: “The National Trust was founded 125 years ago for the benefit of the entire nation. We want to honour our mission – to enable people and nature to thrive. Over the coming weeks we will do all that we can to keep on providing public benefit through caring for places and giving people access wherever possible.
While we will close our indoor areas to help fight the spread of coronavirus, we recognise that people are likely to need access to open space.” Whilst it’s never been more important to keep your distance, being outdoors safely helps your health and wellbeing too, and you have an opportunity to visit some wonderful National Trust gardens totally free of charge – just don’t forget to take some butties and a flask with you. Before departing to any National Trust venue, do check their website on www.nationaltrust.org.uk for opening times.

Link Road The M58 link road has taken another move forward with the appointment of Balfour Beatty as the contractor who will provide key designs for the major road that will connect Junction 26 of the M6 with Wigan town centre (via the new A49 link road). Balfour Beatty will work with the council to offer design and construction advice and develop more efficient proposals, which will aim to minimise disruption and provide a scheme that is value for money.
in our new strategy, The Deal 2030.
Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux said: “The M58 link is a key part of our ambitions to be a well-connected place as set out
Once complete, the M58 link road will mean quicker travel time across the borough and a reduction of traffic levels on Ormskirk Road – one of the busiest in the borough. The road takes the westbound part of Route 225, which was originally proposed by Lancashire County Council back in the 1960’s as a way of linking Wigan to Bolton.

“In order to ensure we can deliver a successful scheme, we have appointed Balfour Beatty early in the process. Engaging with contractors prior to construction taking place is important to ensure a collaborative approach and helps us to shape proposals together. We know there needs to be major upgrades to our infrastructure, so these works will go a long way in reducing congestion and improving connectivity.”
Balfour Beatty project director, Will Singleton, said: “We are delighted to collaborate with Wigan Council on the M58 link road project, offering them our expertise in design and construction. This scheme will help to alleviate traffic on Ormskirk Road - one of Wigan borough’s busiest routes – whilst vastly improving connectivity for the travelling public.” The council has already started some advanced works to prepare for the link road including protecting and diverting utility services and relocating a local rugby pitch at Orrell St James ARLFC on Banks Avenue in Orrell, which has resulted in the creation of two additional full-sized pitches and a smaller training pitch. Following the completion of the design process, the council will appoint a construction contractor with a view to start on site in 2021.

Great
Impressions Impressions Uniforms (formerly Standish Sports and Uniform) has changed radically in the last few years. The mum and daughter team Caeryn and Katie Collins have owned the business for nine years and have decided not only on a name change but a different way of providing a service and crucially a new home.
And if your child is starting high school why not use the free home fitting service? The service is now in its 10th year and has become an increasingly popular service. Caeryn designed the service to help reduce the stress of the single biggest uniform purchase you make – when your son or daughter starts high school. Impressions work closely with all our schools so they can tell you what you need, what you don’t need and when to get it. A home fitting gives you the space and time to fit the kids out without having to drag them out shopping – for something they don’t really want to buy.
Back in October they moved from their Cross St location to larger premises on the High St. Not only is the site more prominent, the double fronted property has a car park right behind the shop. Which for anyone in the know, understands this is like gold dust in Standish!
They bring samples of all the school uniform you will need; the kids try everything on and then an order is put together. You will receive an email copy of the order for you to confirm. You can pay any time before the uniform is collected. And as the host, if you have a party with 3 or more kids you can get discounts on your uniform! The bigger the total spend on the night – the bigger the discount! To find out more or to register go to https://impressionsuniform.co.uk/our-homefitting-service/
The new shop is fantastic, and the bigger space means they can display their services with ease. However, the range of services they provide means that you can shop with Impressions without ever having to visit the shop. Not only do they have a website, you can take advantage of their innovative ‘Take Two’ service. Where you can order and pay for uniform in the size you think you need but have another size delivered at the same time. I can hear the mum and dads taking a collective sigh of relief – gone are the days of dragging your children to try on uniforms, try on there and then in the comfort of their own home and you can give the size you don’t need back. There is no need to pay for the additional sizes, returns or alternative deliveries! Deliveries are carried out at pre-arranged times to make sure there is someone in to try on. It couldn’t be simpler!
How it works
15 Caeryn told Local Life, “We see more and more of our customers making this into a party night. The kids try on uniform whilst the mums (or dads) relax with a glass of wine and some nibbles and then the kids all retire to play whilst the parents decide what they want to purchase. It’s turned a chore into something they actually enjoy!’ Even in the shop the experience is made less stressful with things like toys for the younger ones to play with, sweeties to bribe shy little ones, tissues for emotional parents and a photographer to capture the moment! Caeryn is extremely passionate about what she does, and she is always trying to help however she can. The new string to Impressions goes deeper than the services they currently offer to stressed parents all over the borough. Caeryn explains, “quality and durability has always been important to us, so we work hard to make sure the brands we sell are the best value on the market. “We have always tested our garments ourselves (on our own kids) but this year we also established a customer panel to test garments too.” The new shop has meant an exciting new venture for the duo. In March Caeryn and Katie launched their social enterprise. Smart Futures is a CIC set up to increase the social inclusion of children across our borough living in poverty by providing school uniform packages. They do this by collecting donations of uniform from selected drop off points around the borough, helping people in need and helping to cut waste and the amount of clothes going into landfill.
Impressions Uniform 31-33 High Street, Standish, WN6 0HL Tel: 01257400010
The pre-loved uniform will be repurposed and then be put on sale in the Impressions shops, on their website and at pop up shops in the borough. The money raised from the sale of the uniforms will then be used to provide full packages for children whose families can’t afford uniform. Caeryn and Katie want schools to get involved by collecting donations from parents twice a year that they then collect. They then work with that school providing free uniform packages for those in need. For more information on any of the services offered by Impressions please call either store on the information below.

Park Ambitions FSMP and Shevington Parish Council are hoping to transform the future of Shevington Memorial Park, which has been blighted by flooding and crumbling playground equipment for years. FSMP secretary and Parish Councillor Victoria Galligan said: “The supermarkets, local businesses and the community have really got behind our fundraising efforts. “We are desperate to replace the sand in our play area to something much cleaner and safer for the children. We want the park to be an enjoyable environment for all by repairing the pathways and installing new play equipment. “Many people don’t realise that the Park is owned and maintained by Shevington Parish Council. The Parish Council do a great job of keeping the park
area maintained all year round but the flooding is causing damage that need grants to repair. The FSMP group have been nominated as a Co-Op local cause for 2020, and as we went to press in midMarch, this initiative has already raised over £500. £200 was recently donated by Asda, and the group is also included in the blue token scheme at Tesco Extra in Wigan. Victoria adds: “We’re working with people from all corners of the community and the wider area to achieve this – but we really need more funds so if anyone can help us we’d appreciate them getting in touch”. For more details about Friends of Shevington Memorial Park, visit @friendsofsmp on Facebook.

Message from
Standish Voice Standish Voice and Standish’s councillors have come together to help our vulnerable elderly people affected by Coronavirus. We need your help! The Government has said that, in the coming weeks, people over the age of 70 will be asked to stay at home to limit their risk of contracting Coronavirus. The length of time they may have to stay in their homes could be up to four months. Some elderly people in Standish may not be able to rely on family, friends or neighbours to help in this situation, by doing shopping or delivering medicine and these elderly or at-risk people may feel isolated and worried. Other older people in quarantine may have short-term problems due to helpers being ill themselves or having to self-isolate temporarily. Standish Voice and Councillors Debbie Parkinson, Adam Marsh and Ray Whittingham are creating a network of support for these vulnerable elderly people and others at risk in our community; so that they have someone to turn to if they need help. We also want to buy essential items that they may need if stocks run short in shops and they are unable to find them elsewhere, or are unable to travel to buy them. We will create packs of essentials that we can distribute to them. How you can help: 1. We have set up a Crowdfunder account to pay for these essential items - please give a little money to this co-ordinated, voluntary initiative. To donate, click the link below or go to: https://www. crowdfunder.co.uk/standish-coronavirus-help… 2. Tell us of elderly people who may need help in
this way. Please send their names and contact details of these people – or just tell us an address if you do not know them – to one of the three secure email addresses of our councillors: debbie.parkinson1@wigan.gov.uk a.marsh@wigan.gov.uk raymond.whittingham@wigan.gov.uk If you need help urgently or cannot email, please ring this 24 hour number – 01257 228 488
3. If you are an elderly person and are worried you may not be able to cope if you have to be quarantined at home, please email one of the addresses above. 4. Can you volunteer to help us? We will be coordinating help and support with volunteers either dropping off essential items, doing shopping for our elderly or contacting them on the phone or by email just for a chat and to offer support. If you can volunteer, either a little or a lot, email one of the addresses above and tell us what you can do. This initiative is not designed to replace help that family, friends and neighbours can give, but to ensure isolated older people are not forgotten. We can also alert the authorities to people in need of specialised help.
We are in this together – thank you!

Rec Board Unveiled
The history behind an important community facility in Standish has been brought to life with the recent placement of a heritage board. Jim Meehan, the Chairman of the Friends of Standish Recreation Ground, said: “We wanted to raise awareness of the history and the heritage board describes the 110 years of history of Standish Rec. The funding for the heritage board was secured by the Friends of Standish Recreation Ground from local councillors, Debbie Parkinson, Adam March and Ray Whittingham who all helped unveil the heritage board at its grand opening. Nowadays, the area is used as a playground and a football pitch,
but what is the history behind the area known as the Standish Rec? Standish was a fast developing village at the turn of the 20th century, and the Standish-with-Langtree
25 heritage board will increase historical awareness across the local community and will be the starting point for a series of Heritage Trails later this year.” Here are a number of images highlighting what the land now known as Standish Rec has been used for over the past two hundred years, but for more information do pop along and check out the heritage board at Standish Rec.
Urban District Council decided that the village needed a recreation ground where people could meet and children could play. They approached Henry Standish, who was the Lord of the Manor at the time and owned much of the land in Standish, and in 1909 he agreed to let the council rent part of Squires Hey for the purpose of a recreation ground for the princely sum of £5 a year. In 1920 Henry died, and his widow Helena De Perusse Standish went on to gift the area to the council. Prior to becoming a recreation area, the field and surrounding area were used for a number of commercial activities. Malt Kiln Farm used to be sited on part of the area, and for nearly 100 years trains ran on a mineral railway, known locally as ‘The Line’. This railway, servicing the area’s coal mines was operational from 1856 through to 1932. It then reopened in 1952 when the Robin Hill drift mine opened at Almond Brook and, for the best part of a decade, extracted 200,000 tons of coal a year. The Line eventually closed in 1963. Jim added “We hope that the

Landlord
& Tenant
If you are a residential Landlord, or indeed a Tenant, it is important that you are aware of proposed changes to the law that may impact the regulation of the tenancy. One of the more interesting changes concerns a new obligation on Landlord’s relating to electrical installations, and the follow-up that robust penalties will result from non-compliance with the new Regulations presently before Parliament. As it currently stands, Landlords are only obliged to keep electrical installations in good working order and a good state of repair. Under the new regime, Landlords will need to:a. Carry our electrical inspections ahead of a tenant taking occupancy and a report obtained from a qualified professional; b. The report must be provided to the Tenant before they take occupation; c. Any prospective tenant that requests a copy must be given one within 28 days; d. Such inspections to be repeated at least every 5 years; e. Ensure the electrical safety standards are met. The standards referred to are contained within the 18th Edition of the Wiring Regulations published in January 2019. Most electrical installations installed prior to that date are unlikely to comply with those Regulations. A failure to comply with the above, and the Regulations generally, could result in a fine of up to £30,000.00. All new tenancies from 1st July 2020 will be subject to new rules, which eventually roll out to apply to all existing tenancies from 1st April 2021; to allow Landlords time to implement the changes. It is important that Landlords and Tenants alike familiarise themselves with the standards now being expected of rented homes, which is already littered with requirements that need to be met
before a tenant even moves in. Similar examples are the provision of the Gas Safety Certificate and Energy Performance Certificate, as well as the Government’s ‘How to Rent’ booklet (otherwise known as Prescribed Information). The Landlord and Tenant Legislation can be a minefield, and a failure to comply (in any sense) can often make recovery of possession an extremely difficult task. By way of example, the failure to provide an EPC, Gas Safety Certificate, Prescribed Information or failing to protect a tenant’s deposit, can prevent a Landlord from adequately serving a s21 Notice to recover possession and can lead to further penalties. It can be a massive assistance later down the line, when repossession becomes a consideration, to ensure that all of your statutory obligations are satisfied prior to commencement of a Tenancy. In that respect, seeking professional assistance at the outset, or indeed advice throughout a tenancy, is extremely worthwhile. At ABH Law, we have a dedicated team of lawyers specialising in Landlord and Tenant matters, who are readily available to help you through, and avoid costly litigation at a later date. Contact our Keith Whitehead or James Ford on 01942 246 241 to discuss how we can help you.

How to keep
Toys Tidy No more excuses for not tidying up! With six removable compartments, these boxes are easy to reach and can be set flat or tilted. Oeuf toy store £390, Bobby Rabbit. These sturdy storage boxes come flat-packed and make a fun and functional piece of dual-purpose furniture. Industrial locker storage bench in Hertog Grey, £239, Cuckooland.
When blocks, balls, cars and cuddly toys are strewn everywhere, you know it’s time to reassess your children’s storage. Fortunately, there are plenty of good-looking and convenient ways to help your little ones to keep their room clear.
How cute is this storage bag? It has a quilted lining that makes it stand up even when not filled with toys or bedding.
This hand-crafted pine cabin bed from Lifetime features four drawers with blackboard front and leather handles, plus an open compartment, ideal for storing toys, books or spare bedding.
Lazy Bear storage bag, £37.50, minifili.
Beach House cabin bed, £2,325, Cuckooland.
29 STASH AWAY THEIR STUFF • Ensure that your little ones can reach everything they need all by themselves. Set hooks, racks and shelves at a suitable height, and look for adaptable shelving that can not only allow for different uses, but also be raised as your youngsters get taller. • Make the most of wall space, and employ a combination of shelves (standard, shallow, floating, corner and so on), hooks and rails, as well as peg boards – and maybe even magnetic strips (great for storing small metal toy cars). • Large baskets, buckets and crates (perhaps some on wheels) set on the floor are great solution – they can be colourcoded and possibly even stacked, and everything can be chucked into them quickly and easily. Hand-held caddies are good for smaller items, while a fabric organiser with pockets can be hung from a wall or the back of a door and used for anything from slippers to dolls and teddies. • On a practical note, it’s important that drawers are easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out if pulled hard. Labelling shelves and drawers (use pictures if necessary) helps everyone to know where to put things away.
The Scandi-inspired touches give this toy box a modern edge, while the gap beneath the lid ensures safe and easy closing. Linus toy box, £149, Made.com.
This set of two woven cord fabric storage baskets adds pattern and texture to any room. Salvador Baskets, £30, Habitat. This bag can be opened up and used as a play mat, then used to scoop up and store toys. Rainbow bag by Play & Go!, £29, Fill this cute pear basket with teddies or toys to playfully make more space in your child’s room. Ferm Living Pear braided storage basket, £69, Cloudberry Living. Peg boards are very useful, and come in a range of sizes and contemporary colours The 100 pegboard in blush, £160, Peg & Board.

A Dish
best served now…
That was my first thought when the call came in to review the new eatery on Almond Brook Road; I just couldn’t wait! Dish Bar & Restaurant is an impressive addition to the Standish dining scene - get to know the name well, because you will be hearing it more frequently. The existing building lived its former life as a nail and beauty salon and after closing its doors the premises was taken on and refurbished by husband and wife duo, Simon and Emma Holling. Owners of the already successful Paddock Restaurant and Derby House Food Hall at Derby House in Wrightington, everything they touch seems to have a certain class about it – Dish is no different! Tucked back away from the main road, the setting is stylish, with rich azure blue seating, polished tiled floors, and tasteful decoration that adds a beautiful level of detail to the restaurant. Mediterranean inspired, deliciously simple is the tag line for the new business - from the tiles on the wall to the plates on the table and even the way the staff uniform is emblazoned with the restaurant’s flower emblem; the eye for detail is phenomenal.
The menu follows suit; beautifully simple Mediterranean inspired cuisine, produced with the freshest ingredients and lovingly handcrafted by Head Chef Andre Matter and his team. I was really looking forward to this meal. When Sally and I arrived at Dish, we were immediately greeted by restaurant manager Leigh Ballard. He was friendly and warm, and he also gave us some food for thought when it was time to choose our meal, by pointing out some of his favourite dishes. To start our gastronomic journey, Sally went with some of the little dishes on offer. Her starter arrived and the rustic board was packed with baby chorizo in a honey glaze, harissa chicken thighs and pickled veg. Sally was very vocal about the dish – the chorizo was meaty yet soft and the added sweetness from the honey glaze really gave them a lift. The full flavoured chicken thighs were melt in the mouth, followed by a punch of warmth from the harissa. The al dente pickled veg was a perfect accompaniment and gave a light and refreshing edge to the starter. I opted for the Morcela hash brown, served with
31 the biggest duck egg I’ve ever seen and a mustard sauce. There’s something about hash brown that finds me gravitating towards this dish any time I see it on a menu – I think of it as a litmus test, it can so often be bland but any restaurant worth its salt won’t disappoint and neither did Dish. The herb-infused hash brown was perfectly formed and crispy as well, and once I cut in into it, could see the traditional black pudding laced throughout. My favourite part about the starter was when the egg yolk met the mustard and made the most luxurious sauce, I almost licked the plate, but good manners prevailed, and I stopped myself. Sally moved on to the pan roasted cod with spring onion mash and peas, served with a bacon, onion and white wine cream sauce. To say she enjoyed this meal is a gross understatement – a thick fillet of cod was proudly sat atop a throne of soft, velvety mash jewelled with spring onions and encircled by a moat of rich creamy sauce. The roasted carrots added a caramelised sweetness to the dish and made for a thoroughly enjoyable and filling main meal. I went for a dish from the specials menu - the slow braised beef croquette served with a horseradish mash, grilled fennel and a red wine jus. The shredded beef was soft and tender sat inside the crispy coating. The mash was rich and creamy and had the perfect balance of horseradish without being too overpowering. The added sprinkling of roasted fennel gave it another highlight and offered a great mix of
aniseed acidity. And the red wine jus was exquisite, packed full of flavour and thick with shallots. After taking a look at the dessert menu we decided to share the baked cheesecake! This dish was beautifully presented with a wedge of honeycomb, fresh fruit and berry compote. The cheesecake was a heady mix of creamy filling that had a delicate citrus zing and the buttery biscuit gave way with a satisfying snap as we both dug in – the filling was heavenly; smooth and silky just like it should be! We left with smiles on our faces, full stomachs and an eagerness to shout about just how fantastic a time we had. It really isn’t a question of whether you should visit this restaurant, its merely a matter of when. So, what will be your Dish? 232 Almond Brook Road, Standish, Wigan, WN6 0SS 01257 410329 hello@dishbarandrestaurant.co.uk

The Book
Nook
From thrillers to gardening, there’s something to suit most readers this month… Alice
Peaky Blinders
Christina Henry
Carl Chinn
If you enjoy twisted fairy tales, this book (and its sequel, Red Queen) needs to be on your reading list. The story begins with Alice, who’s been locked up in an asylum for a decade after encountering the Rabbit. She escapes with her neighbouring cellmate and they set off on a journey that sees them encountering various characters from the beloved children’s tale. It’s horrifying, gruesome and as dark as they come.
If you love the TV series, you might enjoy reading about some of the real peaky blinders who lived, fought and evaded the law in Birmingham a century ago. Amongst them was the author’s own great-grandfather. As Chinn states, the peaky blinders were often “unsavoury, unglamorous and unworthy of respect”. The book provides a fascinating insight into historical gang violence.
Three Hours
How to Plant a Garden
Rosamund Lupton
Matt James
Masked gunmen attack a school in Somerset. They shoot the headmaster but make no demands. Who’s behind the attack; who’s safe; who’s the target? A tense thriller with characters you’ll be desperate to protect. Three Hours will keep you on the edge of your seat and reading ‘just one more page’ long into the night.
Itching to get back out in your garden now spring is here? Or perhaps you’re somewhat reluctantly determined to tackle the weeds? Either way, this book might help to inspire you. There’s advice on choosing the right plants for different situations and plenty of guidance on soil conditions, shady areas, plant combinations and more. It’s not a new release, so you might even be able to order a copy from your local library.
On the Up Alice O’ Keeffe Sylvia dreams of a better life, away from her council flat. A home with wisteria around the door, a garden and no noisy neighbours. Meanwhile, her financial situation and the challenges of parenthood are putting a strain on her relationship with her partner, Obe. While Sylvia is desperate to leave her estate behind, when it’s threatened she finds herself ready to defend it. A warm humorous book about family, community and modern life.
The Mercies Kiran Millwood Hargrave The tiny Norwegian community of Vardø is devastated when most of its men are killed at sea in one night. The women have to come together to survive. But this is the seventeenth century, and independent women are viewed with suspicion and distaste. Based on real events, The Mercies is a gripping, thought-provoking read.

Recap
The noughties, the tens, the teens - I am not sure what we are supposed to call the last decade that has just gone, but one thing for certain it was a tough one. In fact, the last two decades have certainly been like riding a rollercoaster.
Rolling the clock back to January 2010, the economy and property market were recovering from the Credit Crunch and the worldwide financial crisis. A decade on and things feel a little different. If you bought a Wigan home over the past 10 years, things have certainly changed. The average Wigan property has risen in value from £138,000 to £167,200 in the last 10 years, meaning each Wigan homeowner has seen an increase of £56.15 per week for those last ten years. This represents an increase of 21% on average over the last decade. But when you take inflation into account, they actually fell in real terms by nearly 12%. Compare that to a 42% rise in the ‘80s, a 13% drop in the ‘90s and rise of 63% in the 2000s in real terms. The good news for first time buyers is that, in real terms, houses in Wigan are far affordable today than they were a decade ago. Whilst there are plenty of newspaper articles telling us that first time buyers can’t get on the housing ladder, it is interesting to note that 33% of homes last year were bought by first time buyers, compared with only 23% in 2009. On average, 1.12 million homes were sold each year over the last decade, although that was 26% less than the decade before (the noughties) when

an average of 1.52 million properties were sold annually. In the UK, the number of homeowners who moved in 2019 was around 14% higher than in 2009, yet this was still just under 50% lower than the average for the noughties. It’s all up and down like a rollercoaster! Throughout the last decade, the Bank of England base rate has fluctuated between 0.25% and 0.75%, so borrowing money for a mortgage is still very cheap indeed. So, why aren’t people buying homes at the same rate as they were in the noughties? The lack of new homes is limiting supply and choice, wages have largely stagnated, stiffer mortgage rules were introduced in 2014 and homeowners are just not moving as much as previous generations did. As many staff and clients know, I’ve always had a desire to grow the business significantly and therefore the funding and extra resource will now enable me to fulfil these ambitions.”
David adds “Clients will not see any immediate change in day-to-day dealings however they are likely to spot new Prosper Wealth offices around the North West as our expansion gathers momentum. Whilst it’s exciting times ahead, our existing clients will continue to enjoy the same high levels of service however we anticipate developing new and improved solutions that both our existing and new clients will be able to access.’’

Business View
Top Tax
Tips
by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy
For businesses and individuals There are a variety of tax reliefs available to business owners and individuals. Here are our top tips for 2020
Tips for Business Owners
Tips for Individuals
Capital Allowances – Prior to your year end, maximise your capital expenditure and claim 100% tax relief via the Annual Investment Allowance
Married Couples Allowance – You can transfer £1,250 of your personal allowance to your spouse or civil partner to lower the higher earner’s tax bill and you can also backdate the claim if eligible.
Contribute to a Pension – Contributions are efficient for the company and the directors. Company contributions attract corporation tax relief and individuals can claim relief from income tax and N.I. Research & Development Grants – Broadly speaking, your company can claim an additional 130% tax deduction on qualifying R&D costs if it undertook an R&D project that seeks to achieve an advance in overall knowledge or capability. Ensure you claim the Employers Allowance – Small businesses are eligible to claim up to £3,000 towards their employers N.I., but it needs to be claimed each tax year. Maximising your Dividend Allowance – The introduction of the dividend tax means that you should carefully plan the timing and levels of dividends to avoid higher rates of tax.
Higher Rate Tax Thresholds – Stay under the higher rate by making additional pension contributions, making donations to charity or making tax incentivised investments. Using your Capital Gains Tax Annual Exemption – It is possible to transfer assets to your partner at no gain and therefore ensure that the respective annual exemptions are fully used. Tax on Jointly Owned Properties – You can apply to vary the taxable income for couples, which is useful if one partners pays a higher tax rate than the other partner. Child Benefit Tax – If your earnings exceed the threshold of £50,000 and you receive Child Benefit payments then you may have to pay back some or all of this. There are reliefs available to offset this. Exempt transfers IHT purposes – Gifting during lifetime has become increasingly important due to the IHT rate freeze. IHT exemptions include an annual transfer of £3,000 and small gifts of up to £250.
As well In addition to providing financial and tax advice to small businesses and individuals, CMA are cloud accounting specialists. If you have any questions regarding your personal or business taxes please do get in touch.

Health & Fitness
Right to the
Core
By Robert Grant Why core exercises are important
What Are Your Core Muscles?
We know that getting fit is important for a healthy life. Often, we equate fitness with running, cycling, walking or some other form of exercise. But there’s one aspect of fitness that is almost always overlooked; our core muscles.
Your core muscles form a ring around the middle of your body. Most people think of the six pack muscles in the abdomen, but the core includes a range of muscles in your sides and back as well. Their job is to keep the top and bottom halves of your body connected together whilst allowing them to move independently. They form a strong foundation that the majority of your other muscles depend upon when you move your body.
Whenever I talk about building muscle everyone pictures someone at a weight bench pumping iron. But strengthening and toning your muscles can be much more subtle. And even a small amount of work on your core strength can dramatically improve your overall fitness and well-being.

When Do I Use My Core Muscles? Practically every movement you make and every
55 position you put your body into involves your core muscles. They are really important. Bending over to pick something up, twisting to look behind you and sitting up in bed are more obvious moments your core is activated. But running, walking, sitting in a chair and even standing still all rely on core strength. Without it the top half of your body would simply flop over. What Are the Benefits of Core Strength? Building a strong core provides a firm and flexible support for every activity your body performs. The stability provided gives you better balance and better posture which in turn helps prevent falls and injuries in your day-to-day life. The support from your core muscles takes the strain away from your skeleton and helps hold it in place alleviating some forms of back pain, stiffness and soreness when you move your body. Any time you move whether it’s for exercise or doing the housework or gardening, a strong core will help you perform better and reduce muscle

fatigue in the other parts of your body by giving them a firm base to attach to. How Can I Build My Core Strength? One of the best things about core strength is that you don’t need a gym or expensive equipment to improve it. There are lots of exercises you can do at home. Make sure you seek medical advice before attempting any new exercise regime. Most people think of sit ups as the prime core exercise. I advise people not to do sit ups as they are not particularly effective and the continual flexing of the base of your spine can lead to lower back injuries. My top tips are planks, leg raises and mountain climbers. If you’re not sure what these are have a chat with your local personal trainer or gym instructor, or search on YouTube for easy-to-follow tutorials. Take your core strength seriously and it will improve every aspect of your fitness as well as provide the central support essential for your body.

Leisure
Parbold Eight by Chris Pearce Distance: 7 miles Difficulty: Hard This month we make an overdue but welcome return to the walking capital of West Lancashire to tackle the Parbold Eight, a reference not to the mileage but to the shape of this seven mile walk. As you can see from the pictures, we picked a gorgeous day to tackle an outstanding walk rich in high quality picturesque views of the Douglas Valley, the peaks of the western Pennine hills and also of the Lancashire coastline.
Go through the bars and take one of the paths immediately to the left which merge into one path just before emerging onto Whittle Lane. Follow the road uphill in the same direction, taking great care on this country lane with no pavements. Once you reach the Rigbye Arms follow the road through a 90 degree left turn onto High Moor Lane and then take a right turn on Broad Hey Lane.
Park up in the small car park at Hunters Hill (L40 3SR) in rural Bispham, a former quarry site that’s been transformed into a woodlands retreat by the local council, and is well worth a visit for the panoramic views alone.
Once you reach the bend on Broad Hey Lane, take the track branching off to the left. Follow the path on a gentle descent and once you’ve passed two ponds on the left, you’ll come to a fork; take the left path towards woods.
59 Turn left and follow the jagged path around the perimeter of the woods. Just as the path turns into the woods, you take a 90 degree left turn towards an open field. Cross the stile and make your way round the left hand perimeter to the far corner of the field, cross the stile and you’re now by the A5209. Turn right, cross over, then take the first left into Fairy Glen, taking the footpath on the immediate left leading down into this ancient woodland. For all its waterfalls and sandstone cliffs, Fairy Glen is a beautiful oasis of calm and tranquillity, much loved by everyone who visits. You’ll criss-cross Sprodley Brook but keep heading gently downhill through Fairy Glen until you reach a raised wooden bridge by some concrete steps. Cross the bridge to the right hand side of the brook, keep to the lower left hand path and you’ll finally come to steps leading to a stile. Cross the stile and head straight across two open fields. Carry on in the same direction gently
60 couple of stiles on the way, until you come to a track running diagonally right across open fields.
downhill, and you’ll end up on a narrow path towards Gillibrand House. Fifty yards after the house, take a left turn downhill, crossing the railway bridge and ending up at the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Cross bridge 40 and turn right down the canal towpath until you reach bridge 39. Cross the bridge and then carefully navigate the railway crossing shortly afterwards. Now the uphill trek begins in earnest as you climb Chapel Lane to the T-junction with Wood Lane. Turn right, then immediate left up the path towards the spire of Parbold’s Christ Church. Climb the path up to the main A5209, turn left and when you see a bus stop on the right, cross over and take the path next to the bus stop, heading down into a wooden area. Cross Alder Lane Brook and then head uphill on a path running parallel to the brook and its woodland surrounds, crossing a

Follow the track uphill and eventually you’ll end up back on Broad Hey Lane. Follow this back to its junction with High Moor Lane and turn right. Immediately after the High Moor restaurant take a left turn up the majestic driveway to the Harrock Estate. Follow the driveway (ignore first footpath sign) and once the driveway bends to the left, take the footpath which branches off to the right and follow this path uphill to the highest point of the walk, near to Harrock Hill Reservoir. The path bends to the left at this point; follow the path out of the woods, round the left hand side of a copse and follow the right hand perimeter of the field, heading towards another wooded area. Climb over the stile and turn left following the path downhill. When you reach a 90 degree right turn, carry on a few yards and negotiate your way over a drystone wall using wooden steps. Follow the path downhill squeezing through gorse, over the stile and via a steep descent through a field until you reach a farmyard. Walk through the farmyard in the same direction until you reach Jackson’s Lane. Turn left and follow this quiet country lane until you reach Bannister Lane where you turn left again, ready for your final challenge; a 550 yard uphill climb to the car park atop Hunters Hill, where a couple of benches await you for a welldeserved rest and those panoramic views.

Gardening
Are you sitting
comfortably? by Angie Barker
Award Winner
One of my top garden design principles is always to include more than one seating area in a garden. We have a tendency in this country to sit near the back door of the house which is fine but it severely limits the possibilities of engaging with our gardens and using them to their full potential. Having more than one seating area gives you a different view of the garden and also means you can make the most of sitting in the sun as it moves around your plot. Whenever possible I include some planting around a seating area whether this be a border or a raised bed. If you have a raised bed you can incorporate impromptu seating or a bespoke built in bench to give extra seating when entertaining family and friends. Scented plants like Lavendula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ and Philadelphus ‘Manteau d’Hermine’ are perfect companions near a seat. If you have a small garden, you can still have more than one seating area, even if it is just a bench or arbour seat in the corner of the garden. It will encourage you to venture out into the garden and beyond the patio near the back door. You will be amazed at how different your garden looks from a different angle and it can become a retreat, a little hide away and arbour seats are great for this and

offer some protection from the elements. If you want complete protection from the weather then go for a summer house. They come in all shapes and sizes – just avoid the temptation to treat it like a shed and fill it with clutter. So now that spring has most definitely sprung and you will want to be spending more time outdoors consider where you could add that extra element from which to enjoy your outside space. I don’t have a large garden but I have four seating areas and I love all of them depending on the time of day and whether I’m on my own, with family and friends or just me and Hubby – that is when I can drag him away from the football!
