Staying safe
P
erusing t’internet on a wet bank holiday I came across a request on a forum from a German guy looking to move to Wigan and asking for recommendations for a nice area of the town to settle in. I wonder if the guy would be so keen to move to Wigan if he knew about the level of anti-social behaviour that persistently blights some of these areas. Seemingly feral youths, hiding under mob anonymity, rampaging through residential areas and setting fire to play equipment, damaging property and throwing stuff at cars is the stuff of nightmares for local residents. Anti-social behaviour ruins the quality of life for affected residents, so what can you do to help rid the scourge of antisocial behaviour from your area? Dial 101 when you see or are the victim of anti-social behaviour. Please don’t assume that someone else will do it, and keep the reference number supplied. The more calls the police get from different residents of an area, the more resources they will target to that area. Wigan residents can download the Report It app from Wigan Council and report problems to the Council in this way. Speak to your local Councillors too and get their help to address the situation. Details of your local councillors can be found at www.wigan.gov.uk or www.westlancs.gov.uk for Up Holland residents. It can be incredibly frustrating for residents waiting for the various processes employed by the Police and the council to deal with anti-social behaviour to kick in, but please don’t be tempted to take matters in your own hands.

Centre to be bulldozed Highfield Grange Community Centre is set to be demolished for housing. The plan is to redevelop the Anthorn Road site for 20 council bungalows. The scheme is backed by the council’s housing department and has attracted Government funding. The council’s planners now have to decide whether to grant the scheme planning permission.

It is set to take place on Sunday, November 26, in Pemberton Masonic Hall and car park. The association is also working with Wigan Council to allow stalls on the small car park on Chapel Street. A spokesman said: “Final details are still being put together, but anyone who would like a stall, or any business who would like to sponsor the Christmas tree, please contact Helen on 07925 867070, or Alison Glover at Pemberton Lighting on 01942 216033.”
Police are also cracking down on anti-social behaviour after youths have began to target properties in the Church Street area. Youths have been identified and will be spoken to by officers. Local high schools will also be visited and talks given to pupils.

or any business to survive for 25 years is a major achievement. In the beauty industry though, where beauty salons come and go almost like the tide, the magnitude of that achievement is multiplied many times over. Let’s shine the spotlight then on Expressions of Beauty, who celebrate their 25th anniversary this year. Established in 1992 at a converted house in Carr Mill Road in Billinge by owner Sharon Lee, Expressions of Beauty has managed to successfully hold back the tide, Canute-like, not just to survive, but to positively thrive in today’s fickle beauty industry. The salon moved in 2010 and now Expressions of Beauty sits proudly upon Main Street in Billinge, a spacious and luxurious beauty salon at the heart of Billinge. How has Expressions of Beauty done this? By consistently delivering high standards, updating beauty therapy skills with the latest treatments and products available, and, of course, by keeping their clients happy.
Over the past decade, Expressions of Beauty has invested heavily in systems from CACI. CACI International is the largest UK manufacturer and supplier of non-invasive surgery treatment systems, which deliver visible and corrective results without the need for surgery or invasive procedures. The CACI systems have attracted an impressive celebrity following and created huge demand for treatments.
17 True to form, when the latest CACI system – CACI Synergy - was launched in 2016, Expressions of Beauty were amongst the first in the queue, and are today one of very few salons in the North West with the CACI Synergy system. The system combines CACI facial toning with skin rejuvenation benefits and introduces S.P.E.D. micro-current LED technology to enhance the results. To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Expressions of Beauty has teamed up with Local Life to offer a free course of CACI Synergy Non-Surgical Facial Toning treatments worth £308 to the winner of our competition. The winner will undergo five x 90 minute sessions of the CACI Synergy where micro current impulses, combined with LED light therapy will lift and tone the face and neck, and the unique CACI Wrinkle Comb will target fine lines and wrinkles. After a course of treatments you can expect to see a more youthful and toned appearance with glowing healthy skin. To win this fabulous prize simply visit www. locallife247.co.uk/free-stuff/competitions/ and tell us the name of the manufacturer of the Synergy system used by Expressions of Beauty. The closing date for the competition is 31st May 2017. Terms and conditions of the competition can be accessed at www.locallife247.co.uk. College rated outstanding St John Rigby Sixth Form College has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. Lead inspector Anita Pyrkotsch-Jones was glowing in her praise for the Gathhurst Road institution. At its previous inspection, it had been deeemed as ‘good’. The official Ofsted report said: “The principal and his leadership team have worked relentlessly to ensure transformational change since the last inspection. As a result, the quality of provision is excellent. “Teachers skilfully assess students’ starting points and meticulously plan to meet the vast majority of students’ needs. Occasionally, teachers’ questioning does not probe the understanding of most-able students.
For all your driveway & patio needs
“Outstanding careers guidance helps students to make informed and realistic, yet ambitious, plans to meet their career aspirations. “Students develop an excellent range of personal, social, moral and independent study skills, which prepare them particularly well for further and higher education, apprenticeships or employment.”

David Sudworth talks to the ex-Wigan rugby prop about his successful transition from the pitch to punditry
T
here’s something refreshingly authentic about Terry O’Connor.
With over 300 Wigan appearances to his name, he’s part of an elite band of former players which includes Jim Sullivan, Billy Boston and Shaun Edwards. He’s now a successful businessman and recently landed a very big gig - taking over from Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson as a commentator on Sky Sports Yet there’s part of him which doesn’t quite believe it all happened.
“If you came to our house, you wouldn’t know that I played rugby league. I put all the shirts and awards in the loft. Actually, let me rephrase that; my wife put all the shirts and awards in the loft!” I meet Terry just round the corner from his old Central Park stomping ground. He remembers the first time he stepped into the famous ground’s dressing room. “I just thought ‘wow’. Back then, they even had international players in the reserves. Wigan were that good.” “I knew that I’d be starting at the bottom. I was 21-years-old at
31 the time and on £15,000 a year. But I’d come from Salford and was only on £1,500 a year there. I’m a joiner by trade so I’d be working on site as well as training/playing. “Even when I signed for Wigan, I’d be doing up properties, living in them for a bit and then selling them on. “We trained with the footballers at Christopher Park and in the car park there’d be rows of flash cars. Then I’d turn up in my old Ford Sierra P100 van carrying a can of oil in the back just in case! “The lads used to crucify me for that,” he smiles. Terry’s strong work ethic was instilled in him by his father. It would serve him well when his playing days ended, and he’s passionate about today’s young professionals planning ahead.
“The game doesn’t owe you anything” “I always say to the players today that it won’t last forever. You may get 10 or 15 years and then your body will tell you it’s time to retire. They need to plan for that day, because it will come. “You get some ex-players who end up hating the game; they end up bitter but that’s because they didn’t plan. “The game doesn’t owe you anything. We all get opportunities presented to us, no matter what walk of life you are from. But it’s whether you are prepared to take them, and then work hard at it that’s the difference.” A proud Widnes lad, Terry still lives close by in Cronton. His first club was Salford, which meant playing under his childhood hero, ex-Wigan and Widnes star Steve O’Neill. “Steve was great. He always pushed me. When I played my first test match for England, I gave him my shirt. Even then, he said: ‘I’m really pleased for
In action for Wigan you Tez, but do you want to be a one test wonder? He was always pushing me to better myself.” Eventually, the big clubs started showing an interest. Wigan, St Helens, Leeds and Warrington all wanted his signature - but it was only ever going to go to one club. “Wigan were the team at the time. I think they’d been to Wembley the previous six or seven seasons, so the standards were very high. “If I wasn’t good enough, Wigan would simply replace me. They had the money to do that. “It didn’t really faze me - I just took it as the four letter word it is - a game.” Terry needn’t have worried. He soon became a firm favourite, and picked up a hoard of silverware. However, the match which sticks out most from his time at Wigan was the Easter Friday clash at the JJB against Saints in 2003. “We fielded a very young team and there were quite a few debuts on that day, including for David Allen and Jonny Whittle. We were getting hammered at half time but we came back to beat them by two points.” After more than a decade at Wigan, Terry knew he was coming to the end of his career so, as ever, he planned to control his exit as best he could.
32 the problem is that those who cheat are the same ones who will let you down on a Saturday.
Newton Common Lock Working for Sky with Barrie McDermott “By January 2004, I knew it would be my last season at Wigan. I’d fallen out with the chairman - we didn’t see eye to eye - so I moved to Widnes. As a Widnes lad, having stood on the terraces since being three years old, it was fabulous. I planned to do only one season, but we got relegated so I stayed on another year to try and help them get back up. Looking back, I shouldn’t have done that extra season.”
“15,000 Saints fans were gesturing at me!” Having quit the game, he took a year out to do simple things like take his children Bethannie, Jarrod and Eryn, to school. “It was nice just to be able to do very little. I’d do a few bits for Sky. I’d known them since being a player and would always chat to Eddie and Stevo in the bar after a game. Some of the players wouldn’t - particularly if they’d been critical of the side - but the way I saw it, they’re just doing a job. “I get that a lot now I’m on Sky - people think you’re biased because you’re ex-Wigan or whatever. I remember doing a pitchside report to camera and directly behind this tiny, six inch lens there were 15,000 Saints fans gesturing at me and calling me all the names under the sun,” he laughs. Terry’s experience both on and off the field have given him a fascinating insight into what makes a great team. “If clubs had HR Departments when I was playing, you’d have been in front of them every day. It was brutal; particularly if a player was cheating. Because
“I learned very quickly that while players may be individually brilliant, and be able to deliver the goods on the field, off the field they bring hassle and disruption to the club. They may take the younger ones out drinking, being a bad influence. So while they may be brilliant, they may not be right for your team.” And again, his passion for hard work means that he’s happy to lend his name to local businesses who want him to help promote their products and services. One such company is Wigan-based Innovate Your Home, which has launched a new campaign, fronted by Terry, aimed at helping homeowners improve their heating and save money at the same time. “I was very impressed with the work ethic at Innovate Your Home so am really pleased to be associated with a great Wigan company. “I enjoy coming back to Wigan. When we do a Sky game, it usually takes me about half an hour to walk to the DW from the car as people want to stop and chat. I thought that after finishing playing, I’d go back on the tools again. To still be involved in the game after all this time is incredible. “

Haigh Fest is back A Wigan music festival is returning after a six year absence. Haigh Fest Rewind 2017 returns on Saturday, June 17, and is set to showcase some of the town’s best unsigned talent. Haigh Woodland Park’s general manager, Keith Bergman said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring local music back to Haigh Woodland Park after such a long absence. “In previous years Haigh Fest and other live music events have drawn big crowds to see some of the the country’s most popular acts, but Haigh Fest Rewind is about bringing the festival back to the thriving music scene we have here in Wigan, as it was when it began in 2002.”

atural wonders such as the northern lights, the awesome fjords and the quiet mountain plateaus intermingle with cities buzzing with culture to forge a land called Norway which, according to the World Happiness Report 2017, is populated by the world’s happiest people. Saga Holidays having been cruising the stunning Norwegian fjords to see Mother Nature at her finest since 1997, offering holiday itineraries on small cruise ships that wind their way through picturepostcard scenes of green landscapes, sparkling blue ocean and quaint villages clinging to the hillsides.
The fjords often stretch deeply inland with majestic cliffs towering above on both sides, interspersed by beautiful waterfalls from the glaciers high above you. Visiting the fjords can make you feel like you are in a secluded time warp, visiting a time when people farmed impossibly steep and rocky surroundings. If the landscapes may seem untamed and wild, the fjord areas are nevertheless easy to explore both on your own and through guided tours. There are small villages spread throughout, and trails for both glacier walks and mountain hikes are plentiful. On the southwestern coast of Norway lies the gateway to the fjords, Bergen, which is

46 was once Norway’s capital city. Bergen is also a European City of Culture and its many museums and art galleries are well worth a visit. Further north, Alesund’s Art Nouveau architecture is known far and wide. In 1904 practically the entire town which, like many Norweign towns was built of wood, was destroyed by a savage fire. Kaiser Wilhelm, the last German Emperor, often holidayed in the area and after the fire, he sent four warships with materials to build temporary shelters and barracks for the residents of Alesund. The town was rebuilt between 1904 and 1907 in Art Nouveau, the architectural style of the time, and the myriad of turrets, spires and beautiful ornamentation in this port town are like something from a fairytale. The nation’s capital Oslo is bypassed by many Norwegian cruises, but this piece is not going to do the same to this cool city of surprisingly good food, amazing museums and wonderful art galleries. It’s also the home of three of the four versions of
Scenic Summer Fjords 6 Nights from £999pp Leaving Dover on July 6 2018 Prices correct as of 10/4/17
Edvard Munch’s The Scream (the fourth version was sold to an American businessman for $120m back in 2012). A whole room at the National Gallery is dedicated to Norway’s most famous artist while his later work is in the Munch Museum.
47 Boats and Norwegians are inextricably linked, and this is very apparent in Oslo, which is the home to three museums dedicated to sea fare. The Fram Museum is dedicated to the Fram, which was used for three polar expeditions and the ship has now been restored and is the museum’s centrepiece. Also don’t miss the Viking Museum, which has three of the world’s best-preserved Viking ships from the ninth century. It’s no wonder that Norwegians are happy, because there’s no place in the world quite like Norway and that’s why Billinge-based travel agent Marken Travel have teamed up with Saga to present an Open Night for those world travellers interested in visiting Norway in 2017-2018. Don’t put up with an
unhappy gut By Lisa Salmon
Y
our gut feeling might be that your digestive system will process whatever you throw down it.
But all too often, our food choices result in bloating, wind, heartburn, indigestion, constipation and irritable bowels - symptoms that, figures suggest, are becoming more and more common. BLOATED BRITAIN A recent survey by the nutritionist Patrick Holford found two-thirds of Brits feel bloated after eating, eight out of 10 don’t go to the toilet every day, and a quarter of women complain of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
49 The results are supported by a 2015 Swansea University report, which found there have been increases in most gastrointestinal disorders across Europe, plus the latest national Diet and Nutrition Survey, which found the population is still consuming too much saturated fat, added sugars and salt, and not enough fruit, vegetables, oily fish and fibre. DIGESTION ACTION Holford, whose new book Improve Your Digestion has just been published, believes most digestive problems are easily resolved. In the book, he suggests different measures for different complaints, such as reducing gut inflammation, which causes symptoms including indigestion, fatigue and headaches, by eating foods with a low glycaemic index (GI), which are antioxidant-rich but contain low sugar, caffeine and alcohol, plus increasing the consumption of anti-inflammatory foods, like oily fish, red onions, turmeric, olives and ginger. For inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, his recommendations include identifying foods that you’re allergic to, or intolerant of, and eliminating them, along with eating anti-inflammatory foods and following a low GI diet, and consuming rich sources of beta-glucans, from shitake mushrooms, oats or supplements. While IBS - which the IBS Network estimates affects around nine million people in the UK - isn’t considered an IBD, advice around managing the condition is similar. GET TESTED The most common kind of immune reaction against foods isn’t food allergy but food intolerance, which leads to the production of IgG antibodies, explains Holford. A common cause of bloating, he says, is eating food you’re unknowingly intolerant to. It’s estimated one in five people are intolerant to gluten (which is not the same as having coeliac disease, an incurable autoimmune condition which
causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy cells when even the smallest amount of gluten is consumed), so avoiding wheat is appropriate for them. Dairy is another common food which some people are intolerant to. If someone follows healthy eating messages eating plenty of fruit and veg and oily fish, keeping an eye on red meat consumption, and eating little processed food and saturated fats - they’re much less likely to suffer digestive health issues. “However, some people do have hidden food intolerances and may suffer symptoms like bloating and IBS, despite an apparently good diet,” warns Holford. Indeed, lots of people with IBS can be sensitive to Fodmaps, found in numerous fruit and vegetables. AGE MATTERS He explains that in older people, stomach acid production, which is needed to help absorb nutrients, goes down, and two in five people over

could be in tea or other hot drinks - to aid digestion and help ‘move things along’.
To maximise absorption, don’t drink tea or coffee with food, as substances in them can reduce absorption. Alcohol can also irritate the digestive tract and interfere with the amount of nutrients taken in.
DOCTOR’S VIEW
FEEL FOR FIBRE Healthy digestion depends on healthy elimination, says Holford, and people should go to the toilet twice a day. “Contrary to popular belief, eating lots of fibre such as bran, doesn’t make much difference. However, increasing soluble fibres, which are the kind found in oats and also chia seeds, does.” Oats are both gluten-free and high in soluble fibres, which absorb water and are good for digestive
Gastroenterologist Professor Julian Walters is co-author of What’s Up With Your Gut, which emphasises the importance of what people eat and their food intolerances, and the impact of poor digestion on overall health. Walters says people are often told they have IBS, which currently has no specific treatment, when in fact they may have other conditions, for which they could be tested and possibly even cured. “I see an endless stream of patients told they had IBS or chronic constipation, for instance, often suffering years of misery with their symptoms, but simple tests could pinpoint the real cause,” he says. Gut symptoms account for one in five of all GP

consultations in the UK, yet studies show 41% of people still don’t bother to see a doctor about their digestion problems. Some symptoms shouldn’t ever be ignored and warrant a speedy doctor’s consultation, including blood in your stools, anaemia (looking pale and feeling tired), unexplained weight loss or a change in bowel habits, as these could be an indication of bowel cancer. And while most of the time, digestive symptoms won’t be due to anything serious, it’s worth talking to an expert who can advise on how to best manage them. “Gut complaints appear to be increasingly reported,” says Walters. “And people shouldn’t have to suffer in silence, their lives extremely restricted in some cases by their symptoms, when good treatments and cures for everyday symptoms exist. “Also, sometimes putting off seeking advice for embarrassing symptoms can delay a cancer diagnosis and cost lives.”

Tickets selling fast Tickets for Orrell’s Last Night of the Proms are selling fast, say organisers. The event, which is being held at Orrell Cricket Club on Saturday, September 9, has sold double the amount compared to the same time last year. It’s thought one of the reasons is the inclusion of S Club Party on the bill, which features former members of 1990s pop superstars S Club 7. Organisers have also revealed they are trying to create more spaces for gazebos after pitches sold out in record time. Organiser Spencer Anglesea told Local Life: “We sold 80 spaces in just over an hour via Facebook which obviously meant that anyone not on Facebook didn’t even know they were on sale. With that in mind we are trying to make more space for the people that have found out about the event from Local Life.” Spencer is also very pleased with how ticket sales are progressing: “We have sold twice as many now compared to the same time last year so tickets are going great. That’s no doubt because of S Club Party’’s appearance. It’s worth remembering that just two years ago when they were the full S Club 7 they sold out arenas all over the UK, so to have them performing in Orrell is a great coup.”
Tickets for the event cost £25 for adults and £10 for those aged 17 and under. They can be bought via www.orrell-live.co.uk

Financial Planning
Predicting the
Future by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP),
Chartered Financial Planner and Managing Director
W
hilst yesterday’s retirees settled for a modest post-work life, the demands and expectations of those who retire today are so much grander, with desires to travel the world or the pursuit of expensive hobbies top of the wish list. Of course, they need to have the income to afford that wish list and for most people, the state pension isn’t enough to enjoy a comfortable and active retirement. And, increasingly, additional income from other pensions is proving unable to bridge the gap too. The Challenge People are urged to save and build a fund for retirement. In my view though, there’s not been enough publicity for an equally pressing issue that many approaching (or in) retirement face; and that is the challenge of making savings last all the way through retirement.
This is more of a concern now than it has ever been in the past with interest rates being so low and standard annuities offering poor value. Having other sources of income is going to be important to those who want to achieve a comfortable lifestyle in their retirement. Those sources of income will not be guaranteed for life in the way traditional pensions are and will therefore need careful management. When people save for retirement they are usually saving towards a fixed retirement date. Once they have retired a very different challenge appears, and that challenge is how to manage a pot of money over the rest of their life, a life that has no pre-determined ‘clocking out’ date. The Risks There are a number of specific risks that need to be factored in when evaluating how to generate a sufficient income from retirement savings. These include; Longevity: people are living longer than expected Inflation: rising prices are eating into the value of savings Balancing Investments: Will the mix of your investments be the right ones? Withdrawal risk: taking too much, too soon and running out of income Long Term Care: will you need funding for care in the future? Planning for retirement when considering all of the above risks can be a daunting task. Sadly the lack of a crystal ball means that the future can be very difficult to predict. How can Prosper help? Whilst we do not have a crystal ball, we do have many years’ experience of dealing with clients approaching retirement who were looking for strategies to enable them to achieve their retirement dreams /aspirations. If you are within a couple of years of making the move into retirement please do not hesitate to give us a call on 01257 423800. The initial meeting will be at our expense and is without obligation.

Debt ‘breathing space’ call Councils are worse than payday lenders in how they enforce debts. That’s the view of local MP Yvonne Fovargue who has called for people who get into money problems at least six months’ “breathing space” to get themselves back on track. The Makerfield representative’s comments came during a Parliamentary debate on this issue. She said: “Most of us have taken out credit and it is not a problem until it becomes unaffordable debt. “As I know from my previous role at Citizens Advice, that often happens because of a bump in the road, whether it is a reduction in hours of work, illness or a relationship breakdown. The problems are often temporary, but people need time to recover. Moreover, they need space to recover from the
illnesses, mental health issues and stress that can be caused, and which are contributed to by threats from creditors and pressure to repay debt at unaffordable rates. “R3, the Association of Business Recovery Professionals, has said that 28 days is sufficient for a breathing space. Frankly, when I worked on debt problems I never even got a response from a creditor within 28 days. “12 months is a reasonable period, and six months would be a minimum. The Financial Conduct Authority’s rules already guarantee 30 days from the lending firms it regulates, and that period is extendable by another 30 days. The R3 proposal would extend that to other creditors, but 28 days is simply not enough.”

Important tax
changes
by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy
A
new tax year has begun and as usual, there are changes to rules and regulations that will affect individuals and small business owners. Here’s a quick summary of what you need to know: Income Tax rates raised From 6th April there are changes to the Personal Allowance, the Basic Rate Limit and the Higher Rate Threshold for individuals. You’ll pay a new rate of Income Tax on your earnings. Here are the new Income Tax rates, compared to last year’s rates; • The Personal Allowance has increased to £11,500 in 2017/18 (from £11,000)
which you may decide to do based on the changes to the flat rate scheme, then you’ll be able to do that if your VATable sales are below £83,000 a year from 1st April 2017 (before that date the threshold was £81,000). National Living Wage increased The National Living Wage was raised from £7.20 to £7.50 on 1st April. For anyone under 25, the National Minimum Wage still applies. If you’re an employer, you are legally obliged to pay wages that meet the National Living Wage to any employees aged 25 and over.
• The Basic Rate Limit has increased to £33,500 in 2017/18 (from £32,000)
Corporation Tax reduced
• The Higher Rate Threshold has increased to £45,000 (from £43,000)
from 20% to 19% for financial year 2017/18. If your business is registered as a limited company, you’ll pay Corporation Tax at a lower rate than you did last year.
New VAT flat rate scheme rate Since 1st April 2017 certain businesses with a low cost base (e.g. who don’t buy many goods) are now known as ‘limited cost traders’. A limited cost trader is defined as one that spends less than 2% of its sales on goods (not services) in an accounting period, or spends less than £1,000 a year on certain goods. If you’re a limited cost trader then you can still use the flat rate VAT scheme, but your percentage will now be 16.5% and you may want to reconsider if this scheme is the best scheme for you. VAT thresholds increased If you’re not yet registered for VAT, from 1st April you won’t have to do so until your VATable sales go past £85,000 a year (or within the next 30 days). If you’re already registered but want to de-register for VAT,
Starting on 1st April, Corporation Tax has reduced
This is just a summary of the many changes introduced. If you’re unsure of what any of these mean for you or your business, feel free to talk this through with us. We offer a free consultation for any sole trader business, landlords or companies that would like to speak to us about these changes. Alternatively drop by the office on Skull House Lane in Appley Bridge and we can discuss these further over a coffee. There will be no charge for the initial meeting.

Food & Drink
Food evokes such
memories
By Keeley Bolger
T
he world might just be latching on to an idealised Nordic way of life, but chef Rachel Allen has long been fully conversed in it. Growing up in Dublin, with an Icelandic mum and Irish father, Allen embraced both cultures, and she’s not surprised all things Scandi have become so popular. “If it’s not the great Nordic [TV] dramas, it’s the food, or how to be hygge... It’s funny,” says the 44-year-old Cork resident with a laugh. “I read one of those hygge books recently, and actually I identified with every bit of it. I always feel really at home there,” the mum-of-three notes of Scandinavia. “I’ve always loved the design. I’ve always loved the architecture, the furniture, the fashion, the food. Allen’s mother Hallfridur - a former art student, who was 19 and visiting Dublin for a weekend when she met Allen’s father - was a creative cook, and fused Nordic with Irish standards. She’d leave comforting casseroles bubbling away in the Aga, and whip up cardamom-infused cakes, igniting a young Allen’s interest in food in the process.
From My Mother. It also draws on the beloved dishes her friends’ mums passed down to them, acknowledges the influence of her mother-in-law, renowned chef Darina Allen. It was a great opportunity to take a stroll down memory lane.
“When I was growing up, it wasn’t about people being ‘foodies’,” she says. “I was born in the Seventies, it was a different thing then. Mum loved to cook and put food on the table. I took it for granted then, and of course, growing up, you realise, ‘Wow, she really did a great job’.”
“It’s funny how food evokes such emotions and memories and nostalgia for people,” she says. “Someone would say, ‘I remember we used to always have stewed plums with custard’, and then I thought, ‘Actually I should be including these lovely recipes as well’. I feel the book is full of memories.”
Now, Allen celebrates that ‘great job’ in her latest cookbook, Recipes
Fancy cooking up some lovely memories of your own? Here are three recipes from Allen’s book...
Recipes From My Mother by Rachel Allen is published by HarperCollins, priced £20.

Roast ratatouille with feta Method Preheat the oven to 200C/Gas mark 6. Rub the whole peppers all over with one tablespoon of the olive oil, place on a roasting tin and roast in the oven for 45-60 minutes. Meanwhile, halve the cherry tomatoes across the equator and place in a bowl, then add the onion wedges. Pour 75ml of the olive oil into the bowl and toss to coat the vegetables, then season with salt and pepper. Push the peppers up to one end of the roasting tin and tip the tomatoes, onions and all the oil in the bowl into the other end of the tray. Place back in the oven to roast. When the tomatoes are juicy and tender and the onions are roasted and golden, tip them out onto a large serving plate and set aside.
Serves 8-10 Ingredients 2 red peppers 2 yellow peppers 175ml extra-virgin olive oil 24 cherry tomatoes 4 red onions, each cut into 6 wedges 2 aubergines, cut into slices 5-7mm thick 2 courgettes, cut into slices 5-7mm thick 200g feta cheese 30 black olives Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper For the dressing: 3tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1tbsp sherry vinegar 2tsp coriander seeds 2tbsp chopped fresh coriander
The peppers at this stage might be tender; if they are, take them out, place in a bowl and cover with cling film. Pour the juices from the tray over the tomatoes and onions. If the peppers are not yet cooked, pop them back in the oven. Place a griddle pan over a high heat to get nice and hot. Meanwhile, place the aubergines and courgettes in a bowl, pour the remaining oil over them and season with salt and pepper. When the griddle pan is good and hot, place the slices in a single layer (you’ll need to do this in batches) on the pan and cook for two minutes on either side until deep golden in colour. Take out and place with the tomatoes and onions on the plate. When the roasted peppers have cooled enough for you to handle, peel off the cling film and peel and deseed the peppers. Discard the peel and seeds but keep all the juices - pour these over the other vegetables on the plate. Tear the pepper flesh into strips and arrange over the vegetables. Next, make the dressing. Place the oil and vinegar in a bowl. Put the coriander seeds into a dry frying pan over a mediumhigh heat and cook for a minute until roasted and slightly darker in colour. Tip out into a mortar and grind with a pestle while still hot and add to the dressing. Taste for seasoning and adjust if needed. Drizzle the dressing over the vegetables, crumble over the feta and scatter with the olives and chopped fresh coriander.

ny bargain hunter knows that when it comes to charity shops, the posh places have all the best stuff. Lymm is a case in point. Even from the street, you can see charity shops positively ooze with top class clobber. And pristine public toilets. The local walks, aren’t that bad either... We park up alongside Lymm Dam (A56, Church Road) and head towards St Mary’s Church. When you come to the end of the railings, take the foot path that leads down and around the lake. We stayed close to the water, taking the boardwalk around the first part of the lake. This come back onto the higher path, which we continued along, before taking the path down to the Wishing Bridge. Once across, we headed back down the other side

of the lake and back to the main road where we had parked. Obviously, if you are in a hurry you can cut this part of the walk out, but taking in Lymm Dam is very enjoyable and highly recommended. Here you go straight across the road and through the arch to the village centre. This takes you down some steps and along a path that runs into The Dingle, which emerges by a weir in the village. It’s at this point you get a sense of the real beauty of Lymm. Pretty, stone and whitewashed cottages line the street. Before you is Eagle Brow, which eases its way into the village centre by going right into Bridgewater Street. Aside from the odd building, most have been in situ for well over 100 years, and add to the character of the place.
72 Atrincham route. Although closed to passengers in the early 1960s, it continued as a freight line until 1988. One of the delights is the old station building, which you pass as the cycle route arrives at Whitbarrow Road. We found an old photo of the station from 1983 online at www.disused-stations.org.uk – happily, a number of its original features are still intact. Here we go left, following the cycle path over Whitbarrow Road, passing the old station building
Follow Bridgewater Street down, under the canal bridge, until you reach the path on the right. Again we go down some stone steps, that lead down to a footbridge across the Slitten Brook. Here, you see the remains of Lymm Slitting Mill and Gorge, which operated from the early 18th to 19th Century. These remains were only excavated around 1970 by local historians, and are an interesting aside to our walk. Following the path round, we head up on to Dane Bank Road. Here, you cross the road and go right, continuing along until you take a left into Lymmhay Lane. Go down the lane and continue straight into the unsurfaced lane, until you reach National Cycle Route 62. Like many such routes, this is an old railway track – in this case the former Warrington-
and the Ranger Station just beyond it, until we reach Barsbank Lane. Then we take a left, going a short distance before taking the track on the left, just before the canal bridge. This track leads up onto the tow path, which we continue along, passing through the village and out to Oughtrington. This amble along the Bridgewater Canal is very pleasant, and we spotted may families holidaying on their narrowboats. The older couples always have a smile on their faces – probably due to the fact that the kids have flown the nest and they’re enjoying their retirement on the open water. Like Cheshire cats, all of them…

Lymm Slitting Mills The demand for slit iron in the 17th Century saw mills spring up across the country. Lymm’s mill was owner by a Quaker family was initially involved in nail production. Metal was taken from Lymm by boat along the Mersey to Thelwall. Prior to the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, Slitten Brook which was much deeper than it is today, and flowed into the River Mersey. With the decreasing demand for slit iron, the mill was turned over to textile production. However, this didn’t last and Gorge was made into a Victorian beauty spot. Over the years, the foundations of the original mill were lost to nature. It was only in 1970 that local historians exposed the foundations of the mill, the remains of the waterwheel pit and the mill-keepers cottage. In 2005, a new scheme commenced as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Lymm Life Project. This allowed Oxford Archaeology North, working in partnership with Warrington Borough Council and the Lymm and District Historical Society to undertake a detailed archaeological excavation and survey of the mill, which was followed by the consolidation of the surviving masonry.
Having got over my generation envy, I started to concentrate on finding the bridge which would allow us to turn back. First corner… no sign of it, second corner… still no sign. Thankfully, like a mirage in an Arabian desert, it appeared on the horizon at the third time of asking. At this point we head up onto the road and across the bridge, then immediately turn right into Sutch Lane. This is a narrow bridleway that brings you out onto Pepper Street. Continue along Pepper Street until you reach The Peppers on your left hand side. Turn into this road go straight on, up the walled footpath, until you reach some steps on your right. Go up these and
75 almost turn right, and follow the path down the back of the houses until it brings you out onto Mayfield View. Here we go right, and continue to the very end of the road, where we take the foot path in the right hand corner. This brings you out opposite St Mary’s church, by Lymm Dam, where we started a few hours ago. This 5.1 mile walk was fairly easy on the feet, and the mixture of rural and urban scenery give it plenty of interest. Over the years, Lymm has attracted some famous names over the years. Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton, former hostage Terry Waite, Sooty’s Matthew Corbett and the late Tony Wilson, TV presenter and music impresario, have all called Lymm home. Clearly it’s doing something right…

y earliest gardening memory is cutting my Mum and Dad’s lawn ... with a pair of scissors. Well I was five at the time. I moved on to helping Dad with his Rose border and I can remember how proud he was one particular summer when he bought a greenhouse and filled it to the brim with Pelargoniums – we called them Geraniums back then. My gardening journey took a twist eleven years ago. Having worked in insurance for over twenty years I decided to become a garden designer – the best decision I have ever made (apart from saying “yes” of course to Hubby). Now I feel my gardening journey has reached its destination as I open my garden to the public every year under the National Gardens Scheme. So if you’ve ever wondered what a garden designer’s garden might look like, then come along to my garden on Sunday, 25th June. Put it on the calender! The National Gardens Scheme has been opening private gardens to raise money for nursing and cancer charities since 1927 and how much the
Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.
NGS is able to donate is driven by the number of visitors that go to the gardens. Entrance is £3.50 for adults, children free admission, and the garden opens from 11am through to 4pm. Car parking is available on what used to be the Dray King pub car park with a 5 minute walk from there. I have a small army of volunteers manning the gate, and serving tea and cake and even Hubby has a role – to nip to the shop when we run out of tea bags. We moved in 10 years ago and the garden was knee high in weeds with not one single plant and extremely overlooked by neighbouring houses. It is amazing to see how the garden has become established since then. Please don’t expect to see Tatton Park or a Chelsea Flower Show garden, we have a small ordinary plot on a modern housing estate - but if you have the time, do come along - you may pick up some ideas for your own garden. And you could meet much maligned Hubby! 40 Acreswood Avenue, Hindley Green, WN2 4NJ

Test Drive
Honda
T
he 2017 Civic is the 10th generation of the model, and Honda claims it wanted to bring back the essence of a practical, yet entertaining vehicle to drive. To do this, the firm has spent time re-engineering this fresh Civic from top to toe. The all-new Honda Civic marks the introduction of two petrol units – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder ‘VTEC Turbo’ and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder power plant. The 1.0-litre yields 129PS, and will do 55mpg, while the 1.5-litre produces 182PS and 48mpg of fuel economy.
Civic
by Tim Barnes-Clay
Undoubtedly, the tenth incarnation of the Civic is an improvement over the last model, handling well on the test route that we took it out on around Barcelona in Spain. And the new power units – of which we drove the 1.5-litre variant – are first-rate, with lots of keen delivery, although the 1.5 i-VTEC Turbo Sport is not as potent as its athletic body suggests.
83
The new ‘VTEC Turbo’ engine can be joined to a CVT automatic gearbox, but we’d recommend trying the six-speed manual gearbox as it feels excellent in the hand and gratifying to work with. It’s also to the Civic’s credit that it stays hushed and refined, regardless of the flashy undercurrent. The design of the all-new Honda Civic has changed. The exiting model is rounder, but the new Civic is like a compact saloon. It looks wider and smoother around the nose area, and the rear has an angular, level shape. Inside, the split-dash has been replaced by a smarter design – reminiscent of
the lovely 90’s Honda dashboard layouts. This is a nod to an age when the Japanese automaker made some of its best cars. The 2017 Honda Civic will be made in Swindon, a factory that has turned out well-built cars for some time now. The British plant will be constructing the model not just for the UK, but for the whole world. This is the inaugural ‘global’ Civic, meaning it’s being made with no specific changes for regions, other than the obvious adaptations for left and right-hand drive markets. Topping the features of the new Civic is Honda’s ‘Connect’ infotainment unit, which is
84 The all-new Civic is a great effort from the Japanese firm, and brings it right into serious competition with hardcore rivals like Ford’s Focus and VW’s Golf. The way the tenth-generation Civic looks, feels, and goes means the opposition should be worried.
Fast Facts • 0-62 mph: 8.2 secs companionable with Android Auto and Apple Car Play operating systems. The other headliner, in terms of kit, is Honda’s safety technology bundle, known as ‘Sensing’. It merges several bits of tech to keep you safe and sound. Features include lane keeping assistant, forward collision warning adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. Due to changes to the structure of the Civic, the ‘Magic Seats’ that made for simple loading of big objects are now absent. Despite this, the boot still holds a notable 478-litres, so it is by no means an issue. Honda has announced the price-tag of its up-todate Civic, and it will start from £18,335 increasing to £27,295, depending on which trim level you want.

A View From The Lump Local gossip, gripes and goings-on Knight to remember When Yes, Minister hit our TV screens over 30 years ago, most people thought the Sir Humphrey Appleby character was a little farfetched. This depicted a top civil servant whose main aim in life was to seemingly bamboozle people with jargon while seemingly avoiding the question.
9 Councillors, appointed to the Cabinet by the Executive Leader. ”Executive Members shall hold office for 12 months from the date of their appointment by the Executive Leader or until they are removed from office by the Executive Leader (whichever is the earlier). “In view of the above, the
Although Sir Humphrey (played by the wonderful Sir Nigel Hawthorne) retired some years ago, his spirit lives on at Wigan Town Hall.
Executive Leader has the right to change the representatives on the Cabinet should he so wish.”
A recent question put to the council’s cabinet demanded: “I want to know why Paul Kenny was sacked. All the exact detail please, I am entitled to them.”
Use your vote
For the uninitiated, Paul Kenny is the Winstanley councillor who was sacked by Lord Peter Smith from his cabinet for backing protests against plans to build on green belt in Winstanley. Surely such a pithy request deserves an equally pithy answer. “As per the Council’s Constitution, and in accordance with national legislation, the Executive (also known as the Cabinet) will consist of the Executive Leader together with at least 2, but no more than
Sir Humphrey would have been proud...
Speaking of the green belt grab, at least it’s brought some life to the The Greater Manchester Mayoral Elections. When first announced a few years ago, they had all the attractiveness of a two week break in East Timor. That was until it became a virtual referendum on plans to concrete over acres of open space in Orrell and Winstanley. Whoever wins, it’s highly likely that the plans will be redrawn. There’s rumours afoot that land allocation at The Bell in Orrell would be scrapped in any redrawn plan. So in many ways, these Mayoral
elections are, to those directly affected by the proposals, more important than the snap General Election called for June 8...
What’s in a name? An interesting letter popped into my pigeon hole the other day. It concerned the whole debate as to the ‘proper’ name for Billinge’s highest point - Lump, Hill or Beacon? “I was brought up in Longshaw in the newsagents’ shop,” writes Mrs Margaret Gibbins, of Gantley Avenue, Billinge. “Every Good Friday, we used to get quite a few children call for sweets and pop. My sister refused to serve them if, when asked ‘where are you going to?’ they said ‘Billinge Lump’. She would call for someone else to serve them. We locals call it Billinge Hill.” It’s an interesting argument, and one which has been tossed round the vault at my local on a Friday night. Common consensus is that, like many things, its ‘proper’ name depends on your age. These days, young ones use them fairly interchangeably. And as I’m the right side of 85, I’ll be keeping my options open!
