ow I would have loved to be a fly on the wall of Wigan Town Hall the day after THAT programme was aired on ITV?
Wigan’s standing as a progressive town has been damaged nationally, of that there should be no doubt. However, what should concern the council more is how it’s going to win back the trust and respect of Wigan residents and its own staff, the vast majority of who are hard working and conscientious. There are issues that the council needs to address, but one of the most defining moments of the show was how they dealt with the problem of dog fouling. As any councillor will tell you, dog fouling is high on the list of residents complaints and Wigan Council’s answer to this problem is seemingly, quite bizarrely, to introduce a dog training method called positive reinforcement in order to train us humans to pick up after our dogs. You just couldn’t make it up. Still, the damage has been done. Let’s hope our council takes a long hard look at its practises and policies, rises to the challenge of further organisational change and succeeds in winning back the heart and minds of the people it serves.

Haigh, it’s getting
fixed!
Haigh Hall’s crumbling car park is getting a makeover as part of a wider package of improvements to the visitor attraction. Infrastructure works at the School Lane site includes upgrading the existing car park and access road, relocation of a children’s play area to make way for an events area and there are also proposals to upgrade pedestrian access routes within the park. A new overspill car park is to be created to support peak times. In plans unveiled by Wigan Council, they admit there are currently “infrastructure” shortfalls in the park which they hope will be dealt with by these
proposals. Chiefs added that projects are part of the £12 million masterplan to transform Haigh Hall and the woodland park over the next three years.

Forum comes of A local group dedicated to making their village sparkle has come of age. Standish Community Forum is 21 years old this year. It was established in 1994 following a public meeting to which all Standish residents and representatives from the township’s organisations were invited to attend. Its aim is to create a greater sense of community spirit within Standish by providing opportunities for the more direct involvement of residents in local issues, and forging stronger links with the local council and other agencies serving the community. The Forum says it endeavours to maintain and preserve local heritage, campaign on local issues and promote community events. And in this special year, there’s no let up with work underway on the restoration of the railings around the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Garden surrounding the War Memorial on High Street. There’s also the construction of Gateway 2 stone entrance structure at the bottom of Rectory Lane, which complements the same ‘welcome’ erected on Almond Brook Road two years ago.
age Neil Whittingham, vice chairman of the Forum, added: “In 2011 the Forum decided that it wanted to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate and purchased approximately fifty Union Flags which were proudly displayed on shops along the High Street and in the centre of the township. The response from the public and local businesses was incredible and this spurred on the Forum Committee, to build a lasting monument to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which complements the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Garden and Monument a matter of yards away from the site. The Forum formed a project plan to renovate a dilapidated rose garden on the High Street into a permanent monument to honour the Queen’s reign. Funding was sought from various grant bodies, but unfortunately we were unsuccessful. The Forum then approached local businesses in Standish who generously agreed to provide direct funding or offers of free labour and services to get the job done. A local councillor also supported us with council funding. “Through these activities the Forum aims to encourage the residents of Standish to create and maintain a colourful and pleasant environment whilst fostering a sense of community pride among the 17,000 residents of Standish with Langtree.” All residents are welcome to attend meetings held on the second Thursday of each month at 7pm in the community centre in Church Street.

Competition
winners
Two lucky Local Life readers are off to watch Kaiser Chiefs on us this August! Anne Simm, of Spencer Road, Whitley, (pictured right) and Donna Lancaster, of Toddington Lane, Haigh, both won a pair of tickets to watch the band perform at Haydock Park Racecourse. For Donna, the big question now is who is she going to take; her sister or boyfriend? “I’ll have to see which one is nicest to me over the next few weeks!” she laughed.
Meanwhile, Anne has decided who she is taking it’ll be her grandson Charlie! Remember, for more great competitions, always keep your eyes peeled on Local Life!

Cutting
A
edge
business needs to be something special to reach a great level and survive there for 15 years. But in the world of hair, with young pretenders queueing up to chop you down and steal your custom, it’s a fantastic achievement.
After working for major city salons, Shevington woman Zoe Stephens launched Urban Hair in 2002. She now employs 10 local staff and can claim to be one of Wigan’s most popular hair salons. The staff have ongoing training to keep up to date with latest cutting, colouring and styling techniques, and external training is supported by industry leaders such as L’Oreal, cloud 9, alterna, and Neal and wolf. What’s more, Urban Hair Salon only uses the highest quality L’Oreal professional hair colours and styling products, so you can be reassured that your hair is being treated with the finest products. Formerly based in Almond Brook, Standish, Urban Hair Salon relocated in August 2014 to a listed building in Shevington. The new premises were previously an old school built in 1890 and had been lying dormant since 2002. The building was in a complete state of disrepair, and it took 16 months of loving restoration to transform the building into a hair salon, enhancing and restoring many of the original features in the process. Recognising that customers want an enjoyable experience in luxury surroundings but don’t want to take out a second mortgage for the privilege, prices at Urban Hair are certainly very reasonable for the experience, with a Ladies Cut and Finish from just £15, and a Men’s equivalent from just £12.50. The salon also specialises in providing lots of TLC reassuring those customers who are nervous about leaving their existing stylist, and for those who need inspiration to try something different. So if it’s style, quality and inspiration that you’re looking for from your hair salon, put your head in the hands of the Urban Hair team. Use the discount voucher opposite and you can enjoy a £5 discount off any service with selected stylists right up until the 31st August 2015.

A bench in memory of a much-loved Shevington Library assistant has been unveiled.
to press. Following news of his passing, a number of people posted tributes on Facebook. One read: “RIP, Bill. You were a kind and generous man, and all Shevington will miss you”.
Bill Gaskell was in his mid 50s when he passed away last July at his Shevington home. He’d started at the library as a volunteer 10 years previously.
The bench has been created by Upholland Blacksmiths and features the words from an English poem Stay Passenger - why goest thou by so fast, which features on a monument to Shakespeare located inside Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-uponAvon, where Shakespeare was baptised.
The bench was due to be placed outside Bill’s former workplace on Miles Lane following a blessing by Minister John Hilton as Local Life went

Standish Voice chairman Gill Foster said: “We want as many people in Standish to get involved and have their say in what they want to change and preserve in the village. We want people’s ideas of how to improve things, too. “We think the house building that is coming to Standish will create challenges for the existing community, but can bring opportunities too. Together we can make Standish a better place in which to live and work.” You can also complete the questionnaire online by going to www.standishvoice.co.uk The deadline is July 31.

Hannah!
A Standish student is ‘destined for great things’, according to her teacher. Hannah Sayer, 18, who goes to Winstanley College,
has been announced as the winner of Falmouth University’s Young Writers’ Prize 2015. The former St Peter’s RC High School pupil has just completed her A-level in Creative Writing in only one year at the college. She won the prestigious prize for her short story ‘The Old Phone’. It has now been published in the university’s magazine and was also highly commended in the National Flash Fiction Youth Competition 2015, jointly organised by the University of Chester and Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine. Speaking of her success, Hannah said: “It was totally unexpected. It’s amazing to be published, but scary at the same time”. Hannah plans to continue writing and is already working on a novel. She hopes to study English Literature and Creative Writing at Lancaster University. Winstanley College English teacher Fran Pridham said: “I’m in no doubt Hannah is destined for great things”.
Shevington nature watch Pupils at Shevington primary are using CCTV in a school bird box to learn about nature. For the past four years, the school has been successfully attracting Blue Tits into the box, and over this time have supported the raising of over 15 fledglings. Sara Taylor, school eco-coordinator, said: “Not only is this great for the bio-diversity within our school but the pupils get to experience nature at its most natural. Margaret Carter, our eco governor, is hugely involved in the development of the outdoor spaces, and Shevington In Bloom. Combined with the eco committee, it makes a formidable team!”

The solution to your cleaning nightmares! The idea of paying someone else to take care of the jobs you don’t have the time, skills or tools to do yourself is nothing new. The difference nowadays is we work longer and harder to earn more in order to buy more; but sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get all our chores done. Someone who knows this all too well is busy working mum of three and owner of Dream Cleans, Lyndsay Taylor. She told Local Life, “The fact that I was so busy and struggling to juggle things gave me the idea to set up the business. My customers love the fact that I can take away their domestic duties from ironing and domestic cleaning to oven cleans and carpet cleaning.” Dream Cleans is much more than a business to Lyndsay, she takes her responsibility to her customers very seriously. So much so that the company has been a member of the safe trader scheme since September 2014; even winning an award in November 2014 for constant high customer ratings. Lyndsay continued, “I understand that it can
“I pride myself on actually doing the cleaning and ironing myself, being hands on makes a difference to the service and offers my customers reassurance that the job is being done properly.” Dream Cleans has gone from strength to strength in two short years and Lyndsay has opened a shop on Station Road in Parbold. The shop opening means that the business can expand and Lyndsay will now be offering additional services including dry cleaning and specialist oven cleaners. There is a wide range of cleaning services and packages available at different rates to suit different budgets. Lyndsay told Local Life, “My philosophy for the business has always been centred on my eye for detail. I want my customers to know that nothing is too much trouble and we will always go the extra mile to help people.” So don’t let the daily chores grind you down, let Lyndsay do what she does best and make your cleaning schedule a thing of the past. Complaints cost The cost of probing Wigan councillors’ behaviour cost the taxpayer almost £112,000 in just 12 months. Figures released recently showed that complaints lodged against just four councillors cost over £55,000 alone, while the remaining amount relates to cases which are either ongoing, concluded through informal resolution or didn’t require any further action. Two complaints against Standish councillor Gareth Fairhurst cost over £8,400 while one complaint against former Standish councillor Emma McGurrin cost £2,262.66. A further complaint involving McGurrin together with Hindley Green’s Cllr Bob Brierley cost £5,930.06.
£112k It’s also transpired that since April 2010 to March 2015, the council has investigated 91 complaints. Although the numbers of complaints has dropped the number of ‘Councillor against Councillor’ spats has increased from 26 % up to 53%. In a report for the year, Standards Committee chairman Charles Rigby said: “Once again the media spot light has been on Wigan Council and the behaviour of small minority of its councillors. “It would have been an easier option to simply let poor behaviour slide, but that would have been a disservice to the public of Wigan and hard working staff of the council. Public trust and confidence is important.”

Aspull vote Do you want to help Aspull become dementiafriendly? An event is being held on Friday, August 14, which will see a number of decisions being made on how to deliver on that vision - and members of the public are invited. A speed vote will be taking place from noon-1pm and 1pm-3pm at Aspull Royal British Legion, Sumner Street. There will be a chance to listen to presentations before casting your vote. To book your place call Lorraine or Barbara on 01942 404252.
Crowning glory Locals are being reminded that Shevington’s bowling green closes for its traditional autumn/
winter break on September 30. The facility on Forest Fold, Miles Lane, is open daily from 8amsunset and individual membership is £15. Contact the parish council clerk on 01257 473022 for more information.
Brought to book Action is being taken over shoppers using Standish Library’s car park. Following complaints that it is being used by people who aren’t going to the library, more signage has been erected and staff have placed notices on windscreens of people who flout the rules.. The issue arose during feedback from a customer survey last year. Other matters, such as cutting back shrubs, plants and hedges at the Cross Street facility have already been sorted.

dementia
Standish Library users can now read on caring for loved ones with dementia thanks to the generosity of a local company. Home Instead Senior Care has recently donated copies of their dementia care book to the Cross Street facility. Confidence to Care is a handbook for those caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The book offers readers a combination of personal stories and practical advice to help them provide the best and most effective dementia care possible. Solar plan in pipeline
Bin calendar change
An area of land in Wrightington could be used for a solar development.
Wigan’s households will no longer receive printed versions of their bin calendars. Council chiefs say they will now only be available online.
Plans have been revealed for a site at Tunley Moss Farm, bordering Courage Low Lane and Tunley Lane. Pearmat Solar 1 Ltd, via agents the Pegasus Group, have now formally asked for a Screening Opinion - usually the first step in the process of submitting a full planning application for solar development. To read the background documents over this latest plan, visit www.westlancs.gov.uk - reference number 2015/0626/SCR.
Cllr Kevin Anderson, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “We believe that most residents who do not have internet access would be able to ask a friend, relative, neighbour or carer to help them find out when their bins will be collected. Furthermore, anyone is welcome to visit their local library or Life Centre where staff will be happy to help.” Visit http://kinnear.wigan.gov.uk/bincollections/

The last lighthouse
keeper
David Sudworth meets the Wigan man who spent 32 years keeping the nation’s coastline safe
H
aving spent over three decades helping ships navigate their way around Britain’s coastline, it’s little wonder Gordon Medlicott sees no need to buy a sat nav for his car.
Not that it wouldn’t have come in handy when trying to find a rural village hall on a dark, miserable winter’s evening: “They always say ‘The hall is on the right - you can’t miss it’ but as soon as I hear that, you can guarantee I will. But I still won’t buy a sat nav!” laughs Gordon. The 73-year-old, who has lived in Swinley for over 40 years, is well-known across the North West for his talks on lighthouses. Indeed, he is known as the nation’s last lighthouse keeper, having worked in all four corners of the country from 1966 to his 1998 retirement. 2015 marks his 30th, and final, year of giving the talks on something which was always more of a vocation than a simple job. “I must have given well over 1,000 talks since 1985,” says Gordon, sitting in the front room of his home on Yewdale Crescent.
45
“The first one I did was when I was I was on leave from my posting at Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne Islands in Northumberland. It was the home of Grace Darling who, along with her father in 1835, rowed out in a storm and rescued nine survivors from a shipwreck.
Once married, Gordon decided to find a land-based post, and that’s when his love affair with lighthouses began. The newlyweds had moved to Rochdale but soon found themselves living at Hartland Point Lighthouse in Devon.
“I was asked to do the talk by someone who my wife Louise knew. She was working in social services at Wigan Council at the time. There was usually only about 30 to 40 people who attended but in the end there were 120. My name then started circulating around the booking secretaries of local societies and that’s how it all started.” It’s fair to say Gordon has a real passion for this subject; something which is evident before I even meet him. As I walk up his drive, I notice a stained glass window next to his door which depicts – yes, you’ve guessed it - a lighthouse. You’ve got to smile.
“You had to drive 20 miles before you got to a proper road!” “They have a great mystique to them but I don’t think I’d like to live in one now, full time. For one thing, I can’t see the attraction of round walls. Also, we lived in one for a brief period in the 1970s and it was so isolated you had to drive 20 miles before you got to a proper road.” Born in Litherland, north of Liverpool, Gordon met Louise when they were both 11 and lived on the same street as facing neighbours. Aged 16, Gordon joined the merchant navy and travelled the world. They married in 1953 but only after the wedding had to be cancelled three times owing to the fact a seven week assignment in West Africa actually turned into a six month one. “I remember the captain coming up to me regularly saying: ‘She’s been on the radio again, asking when we’ll be back’ but there was nothing I could do. We’ve been married over 60 years now so I think she’s forgiven me!”
Gordon and Louise in the 1990s “We did think about living in Devon permanently but the house prices were so high and there was a lot of gazumping because they were so soughtafter. A friend then sent us a copy of the Wigan paper and it had loads of homes for sale in it, which were much more reasonably priced, so we came up here and have stayed ever since.” Throughout his working life, the equipment used in lighthouses were, by and large, very antiquated. More isolated places would present a particular challenge: “We were using Victorian equipment really and the modernisation process only

happened one lighthouse at a time. Many still ran on oil which created smoke so you’d spend time washing the walls. We’d also have coal-fired cookers and if there were three of us, there would be one person to cook everyone’s meals. We generally got on well with each other. OK, sometimes there were fallings out but they were never for long because you soon realised that person would be cooking your dinner later on. “As for boredom, it’s only a state of mind so we’d have many hobbies. I’d work with men who would pass the time on putting ships into bottles, making rope rugs, painting... you name it. I used to make toys for the kids, including a rocking horse, which is now in the dining room, and I learned how to cross stitch.” During his 32-year career, Gordon’s role with Trinity House Lighthouse Service took him to 22 lighthouses. In 1981, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal after he helped rescue an injured man who had fallen from a cliff and into the sea at Holyhead. He was received by the Mayor of Wigan at the time for an official ceremony at the old town hall. As modernisation continued, he was the final Principal Keeper of the

They have four grandchildren; Jonathan, 23, Luke, 21, Samantha, 19, and Beth, 15, plus one great-grandson, Dean. They keep busy through the Wigan Borough Community Cycling Club and are volunteer cycle leaders. Gordon’s also a former volunteer tour guide at Wigan Pier and is now a trustee of The Association of Lighthouse Keepers. He’s also authored his own book, An Illuminating Experience, which has received rave reviews. Gordon admits he will miss the talks, but not the travelling: “The north west is around 1,000 square miles large and over the years I’ve covered a fair few of them. Lighthouses are a passion though; every time I see lifeboats going out on the TV news I still get upset because I know what they will be facing. I’ve done it myself. But I believe we’ve got to keep the heritage alive.

Time to move

W
hen a woman’s reproductive life comes to an end, she hits the menopause - or, to be more accurate, it hits her.
On average, UK women start the menopause at 51, though it can begin much earlier, and it can bring with it a range of symptoms, from irregular periods, hot flushes and mood swings, to the brittle bone disease osteoporosis. In the years following the menopause, a woman’s heart disease risk rises too. Some women are lucky, only knowing they’ve been through ‘the change’ because their periods have stopped. But around 80% experience symptoms to some degree, which typically continue for around four years after their last period, while for around 10%, symptoms can go on for up to 12 years. However, although the menopause can have a huge effect on a woman and her family - its effects are often underestimated by both medical professionals, and women themselves. In a bid to address this, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has issued the first draft guidelines for health professionals who treat menopausal women. The guidelines include offering care that considers the woman’s symptoms and preferences, explaining menopause symptoms and stages, suggesting helpful lifestyle changes, discussing the benefits and risks of treatments, such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and possibly offering cognitive behavioural therapy to help relieve anxiety. Professor Mark Baker, Centre for Clinical Practice director at NICE, says: “Menopause affects millions of women, and its symptoms can severely upset day-to-day life. The effects of menopause are often misunderstood and underestimated. When women seek medical help for their symptoms, there is considerable variation in what is offered to them.” Signs & symptoms These can vary greatly, but include irregular periods, hot flushes and night sweats, mood swings, fatigue, anxiety and depression and sleeping problems. In addition to the better-known hot flushes and mood swings, the loss of oestrogen can lead to other health problems, including osteoporosis, as oestrogen, important

Care in your OWN Home ASK AMANDA! Amanda Barlow is the Registered Care Manager for Right at Home – she answers your questions.
Can you do short term care? YES. It is often assumed that a person must have support at home on a regular basis - the typical image is that of a daily morning visit to ensure someone is well and ready for the day ahead. However, we can help people on a short term basis for a variety of reasons. It may be that someone has been in hospital and needs help until they get back on their feet after an operation or illness. As I write we are arranging to help a lady who
has fallen and broken a few ribs. Night care is a service in demand, if someone is going through a difficult time they may want someone to stay overnight at their house for a few nights. This time of year we help many people whilst their family, friends, neighbours or carers take their annual summer holiday. This help can be anything from a one hour visit to ensure someone is well through to large blocks of care – even 24 hours. If you are interested in this service it is advisable to contact us early as demand can be high in the summer and some of our carers take a holiday themselves.
Whether you require short term support or want more regular help please call Amanda for further advice

for bone health, usually aids in protecting them against thinning. “One woman may sail through the menopause with no problems,” Mr Edward Morris, a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and chairman of the British Menopause Society (BMS). “But another woman even from the same family may have severe problems. The severity isn’t predictable.” Medical menopause If a woman has a surgical menopause, where her ovaries are removed for medical reasons, she will often have a sudden menopause with severe symptoms. Angelina Jolie, who carries the faulty BRCA1 ‘cancer’ gene, made the decision to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed earlier this year, at the age of 39, to reduce her risk of cancer (she’d previously had a double mastectomy for the same reason). “I am now in menopause. I will not be able to have any more children and I expect some physical
changes,” the Hollywood star said afterwards. “But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.” To hrt or not to hrt? Over the last decade, there has been much debate about the possible risks and benefits of HRT, which helps relieve menopausal symptoms by replacing oestrogen. While it’s been suggested that HRT may be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, the NICE draft guidelines stress that menopausal women and healthcare professionals should understand that HRT doesn’t increase cardiovascular disease risk when started in women aged under 60, and doesn’t affect the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease either. In addition, the guidance states that HRT doesn’t affect the risk of dying from breast cancer, and that HRT with oestrogen alone is associated with little or no increase in the risk of breast cancer. with oestrogen and progestogen can be associated with an increased risk. NICE also stresses that any increase in breast cancer risk is related to treatment duration, and reduces after stopping HRT.
Reports surrounding the effectiveness of such approaches are largely anecdotal; however, many women swear by them for minimising symptoms and improving quality of life.
Morris says only around 10-15% of the women who could benefit from HRT are actually take it, observing: “That’s a personal choice, and I can understand why a lot of women think that after the age of 50, they’re not designed to live with hormones, but we’re not necessarily designed to live as long as we do, either.”
There’s little scientific evidence that complementary and alternative therapies can help menopausal symptoms or provide the same benefits as conventional therapies, but Morris suggests: “They can make a difference, although sometimes it’s just the reassurance that the woman’s in control..”
Any alternatives?
Losing weight can reduce the severity of hot flushes, notes Morris. “Exercise and a healthy diet are good from an osteoporosis point of view, as exercise can reduce the incidence of fractures, and getting the right amount of vitamins is good for the cardiovascular system and the bones.”
Surveys have suggested that around 70% of menopausal women try alternative remedies to help relieve their symptoms. Such remedies include phytoestrogens - plant substances that have effects similar to those of oestrogens - black cohosh, evening primrose oil and ginkgo biloba, as well as therapies like homeopathy, acupuncture and reflexology.

Staying in the home that you
T
he decision to buy a stairlift is often taken at a time of stress, often after a person has suffered a fall or received the news of a debilitating illness. In reality though, stairlifts should be embraced as a modern accessory to prevent falls and preserve the dignity of our loved ones, allowing them to stay and make use of their entire home and not be confined to living downstairs. Here’s a few pointers for you to consider when buying a stair lift: Shop Around Most mobility retailers (and charities) will simply pass on your stairlift enquiry to another company and in return they will receive hundreds of pounds in commission. This commission is naturally built into the final price that you pay.
love
Aftersales Service & Costs You need to ensure that you have total piece of mind with a good warranty from trained engineers. Check that there are no high servicing costs linked back to the warranty and who do you phone if something goes wrong ? …. are they local ? Beware High Pressure Sales Many firms employ high pressure sales teams who are paid commission. Don’t invite them into your home unless you have somebody with you who can take notes and help you to encourage them to leave when you have heard enough! Better still, don’t invite a sales person to your home until you have had chance to examine their brochures. Also, keep your home telephone number private so they can’t pester you. Try before you buy You wouldn’t buy any other household item of equipment without testing it first. This is particularly important when it comes to the seat on the stairlift since, just like people, seats come in many shapes and sizes and you need to feel safe on your stairlift. Future Proof By this, I mean plan ahead and think about what level of mobility you will have in another 5/10 years. For example, if you suffer from arthritis of the hand/ wrist, you may struggle to turn the stairlift at the top of the stairs, so you may need to consider a motorised chair instead. Buy the stairlift now which is going to help you for the next ten years and not just the cheapest. Reece Pearson, Ableworld Stairlift Engineer.

Financial planning
Avoiding investment mistakes in
retirement by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP), Chartered Financial Planner and Managing Director
D
o you manage your own investments? Are you happy that they are invested into the right areas? Whilst investors have endured challenging conditions over the last few years, investment fundamentals have remained unchanged. Here are some common errors that self-investors make. Length of Life Usually investors are far too conservative which can be a problem when planning their futures. With medical treatment becoming far more effective, most people now live longer lives, so their funds could run out before their lives are over. Investment Objectives and Portfolio Strategy Aligning your objectives with your portfolio strategy is critical to determining your long term investment success. Generally, the longer the investment time horizon, the more risk one is able to take on. Too many investors focus on short term volatility rather than the long term probabilities of achieving their objectives. Overlooking Unintended Risk Factors Too often self-investors fail to recognise certain risk factors. Quite often two different securities that appear to be different can have similar correlation, and consequently market factors such as interest rate movements or commodity price changes can affect both holdings in the same way. Too high a concentration of any of these is risky.
Ignoring Global Markets As a result of globalisation there are a significant number of investment opportunities to take advantage of. If you suffer from a home country bias (even with diversification across different sectors) the returns are still in part linked to the overall economic performance and political climate of the home country. Geographical diversification is a key part to building a well constructed portfolio that will grow your assets. Over Confidence It is only natural to experience emotional fluctuations as you watch the ups and downs of the market each day. Many self-investors focus on their successes and forget the mistakes they have made, and this breeds over confidence, which can lead to taking on excessive portfolio risk. That is why it is vital to create an environment that is detached from emotion, one that relies on data and impartial analysis to make the right decisions. It is very difficult to avoid all of the investment pitfalls, and many self-investors simply do not have the time or resource to process the vast amount of data available and then to apply it to their personal investment requirement. If you need help with your pensions and investments please do not hesitate to give us a call. The cost of the initial consultation is met by ourselves and is without obligation.
The value of investments, and the income derived from them, can go down as well as up and you can get back less than you originally invested.

We ensure our clients’ businesses run as smoothly as possible by providing them with the right tools, such as cloud based accounting software and regular management accounts.
How to manage your customers to ensure you get paid on time? The following tips can help you stay in the black: • Set out your terms and conditions - Clearly state when payment is due and what will happen if not received • Get to know your customer – Check references and research the background of the person you’re dealing with so you can decide what credit limit to set, or whether to steer clear.
• Invoice on a timely basis – Credit control starts with the invoice. Send it out promptly, accurately and to the right person. The quickest way to do this is to send it via an email and ask for a read receipt. • Payment chasing should be a tight operation - Use a good system such as Xero to send reminders when payment is due. Be sure to make a telephone call or send a letter as soon as an invoice becomes overdue. • Employ a credit controller - If you have the resources, employ a credit controller, or outsource to a company with expertise. • Promote flexible payment methods – Make it as easy as possible for your customers to pay you; credit card, PayPal, direct debits, standing orders and other online / automated payment methods. These are just a few tips that we give to our clients to help them stay on top of their cashflow. Every business is different and some methods work better than others depending on circumstances. Want to learn more? We offer free consultations to new and existing businesses, including sole traders, who want to improve their credit control or find out how cloud accounting can help improve their business. 01257 255521 info@cma-accountancy.com www.cma-accountancy.com CMA Accountancy 39 Skull House Lane, Appley Bridge, WN6 9DR

800 jobs on the
way
More than 800 jobs are set to be created in Wigan by budget chain Poundland. A new multi-million pound distribution centre is set to be built at the old Georgia Pacific site at South Lancs Industrial Estate near The Three Sisters recreation area in Ashton-in-Makerfield. It’s believed to be the single biggest jobs boost ever for Wigan Borough covering 30,000 square metres of land. Wigan Council says that the town was chosen by Poundland over two other areas in the North West.
Councillor David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for economy, said the scale of it resembles Heinz’s move to Wigan in the 1950s. Meanwhile, another local business is looking to expand. Kings Quality Foods on Princess Street wants permission for extend the existing factory to provide additional fridge and storage space. This includes a replacement visitor waiting area, staff changing facilities with additional office space. If planning permission is passed, Kings - which sells to the catering industry, butchers and general public - hopes to create more part time roles. A decision is due by mid August.

Plans for ex-Sharpy’s unit A former upmarket fish and chip shop is set to be turned into offices. Speculation was rife last year that national chicken restaurant chain Nando’s was poised to move into the old Sharpy’s building near the DW Stadium. However, Wigan Council has now received a formal bid to turn the unit, which was last used over three years ago, into offices. Sharpy’s was run by David Sharpe (pictured), grandson of Wigan Athletic supremo Dave Whelan. Once closed, it was put on the market with a
guide rent of £60,000 per annum by Fleurets Leisure Property Specialists. Sharpe is now the chairman of Wigan Athletic, having taken over from Whelan earlier this year. Aged just 23, he became one of the world’s youngest football bosses. A decision on planning permission for the old Sharpy’s unit is set to be made by mid August.

G
rowing up, Michel Roux Jr enjoyed slap up dinners made by his decorated chef dad Albert Roux and uncle Michel. No wonder then, that his memories of school dinners pale in comparison to these veritable feasts. “Eugh, I don’t want to even go there,” he says, wincing at the thought. “I did go to English school, and I’m afraid to say, I know exactly what gristly mince and packet mashed potato tastes like,” adds the 55-yearold, who admits he’s had a “bit of a head-start in life”, growing up in a family where food was so important. While chewy meat and watery mash was common fodder back in his school days, the stodgy school dinner stalwarts were certainly off the menu in his recent TV cookery competition First Class Chefs. The first series for the Disney Channel, which started recently, saw teams of school children putting their kitchen skills to the test, in a bid to transform their relationship with food.
Like Jamie Oliver before him, Roux Jr. hopes the series encourages more children and their families to whip out the pans and start cooking. “It’s great to see these children taking such an interest in food, and that comes from their family,” he explains. “Food is not just fuel. Their families are not just buying ready-meals, whacking them in the microwave, and shoving them in front of the kids, in front of the telly. “No - their kids are taking part in choosing what they’re going to eat, and it’s great.” His own daughter Emily, who has also followed in his foodie footsteps, appeared as a special guest chef and help with the judging. “She’s 24 now, so she’s no longer really a trainee,” he says of his “exceptionally talented” daughter. “She’s earning a good wage and really enjoying herself cooking. We get on very well and she always wants to do her best.” Likewise, Roux Jr. says he’s trying to be on his best behaviour in the kitchen, too. “I mean, I’m a control freak,” he admits. “I hate not being in control and the thing is, if you do lose your temper, it’s because you’ve lost control and that’s something I don’t like. “I’m like everyone, occasionally I do lose my rag, but I don’t like myself when I do.” Fancy trying some of Roux Jr.’s recipes with your family? Here are three easy-to-follow dishes from his book, The French Kitchen, to get going with. It is published in hardback by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, priced £25. Available now.

Mitsubishi
Shogun by Tim Barnes-Clay
I
n 1982 Mitsubishi Motors Corporation launched a brand new breed of vehicle: a 4x4 which was tough enough to go where others feared to tread, yet enjoyed the sort of sophisticated specification more normally associated with top end saloons. More than thirty years later the Shogun is a living legend. The 2015 Mitsubishi Shogun has a bold new front end, distinguished by a deeper more integrated grille and chic LED daytime running lights. The design changes for this year represent a progressive evolution of the hard-hitting Japanese off-roader. Naturally, the Mitsubishi keeps its go-anywhere, self-assured and powerfully built presence. This is characterised by its short front overhang, upright windscreen, strong high flanks, flared wheel-arches and rear-mounted spare wheel. These are all key Shogun styling cues that underline its mud-plugging aptitude. Indeed, standing next to the Shogun makes you feel pretty small. The vehicle is enormous and looks rather intimidating to drive. But once you haul yourself into the cabin, turn the key, select ‘Drive’ from the automatic gearbox and get rolling, any unease evaporates.
85
By no means is the brute always a delight to drive on the road though. Sure, it’s easy to point the Shogun down a motorway and stay there, but any cross winds do knock you about a bit. That’s no surprise as it’s a tall vehicle – and because of that you can also forget tearing around bends on country roads, unless you like lots of lean. Instead, the new Mitsubishi Shogun is about muscle and ruggedness. The top of the range Long Wheel Base (LWB) SG4 model, on test here, pulls like a train with its 3.2-litre, 194bhp,four-cylinder diesel engine. 0-62mph arrives in 11.1 seconds and top speed is 112mph. More importantly it has low-ratio gearing and a differential lock to make sure you’ve got the best chance of getting it out of even the most challenging of non-tarmac situations. The Mitsubishi Shogun is not only a giant of a 4x4, its cabin feels solidly screwed together and comes crammed with luxury features. As well as improved sound deadening, SG4 trim brings leather seats, Bluetooth, a tyre pressure monitoring system and a five-speed automatic gearbox. Staying inside the cabin of the Shogun, its multifunction display has reams of information available. This includes a barometer and an altitude gauge, indicating that this is a vehicle that has motoring ability stretching way beyond a farmer’s field. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the large glass area provides first rate views of the road or rugged ground around you. Rear seat space is colossal, and load capacity seems immeasurably
if you’re taking a group of friends into the rough or you’ve got a posse of children you need to drop off at school. Away from the much commented luxury softroaders, heavy-duty workhorses such as the Shogun have carved out a unique niche in the market where ability and dependability matter first and foremost. Since a price decrease in July 2013 Shogun sales have gone from strength to strength. With its new design and improved specification, the Mitsubishi Shogun now offers even better value for money.

Penwortham &
Preston by David Sudworth
P
erhaps the biggest advantage of walking over other means of transport is that it allows nay forces - you to re-evaluate any firmly-held preconceptions about an area. I’m not ashamed to say that, having spent three years at university in Preston, I had a few, mostly involving rain, urban sprawl and traffic jams.
All photos by Peter Bretherton
This, I realise now, was entirely my own fault, because if I’d had ventured a bit further than just the wellworn path between the train station and the uni’s Greenbank Building, where scribes of the future learn how to write ironic and witty prose, then I’d have spent the last 15 years being much more positive about the place. For instance, I never realised just how stunning Avenham Park is, or how the River Ribble has an almost European feel. But more of that later.
We started our walk just outside the city boundary in Penwortham, at the free car park on Hill Road (PR1 9XH). At this point, it’s worth noting that if you fancy cycling this route, then that is also an option, as it consists of an excellent network of paths. Turn right out of the car park and then almost immediately turn right again down Valley Road. After a few minutes it bears off to the right. Keep right and head up to the bridge which goes over the A582. From the bridge, simply head straight on until you can see a main road in front of you. This is the B5254 Leyland Road. Cross the road and after a minute or so, you’ll come to a sharp left, Holme Road. This is a straight track and the place where you’ll get the first glimpse of the Ribble. It’s tempting to start snapping straight away but trust me, there’ll be plenty of better opportunities later on. Eventually, you’ll meet the A59 Liverpool Road.
89
and 1838, these days it carries West Coast Main Line trains. Amazing to believe that 177 years after coming into operation, this bridge is still an integral part of our transport system, as well as being of significant architectural merit. Our next crossing point takes us to yet another old bridge, one which has been closed since 1972. The East Lancs Railway Bridge ran to Bamber Bridge, but now allows pedestrians and cyclists across. Before you get onto it though, you have to go underneath it, bear right and then follow the path back on yourself by going up the banking. Once on the bridge, the original barriers between rail and pedestrian sides are still there and, again, you are afforded excellent views Turn right and head over the river. This is the point you start to appreciate just how wide and tidal the Ribble is. At the time we visited, in the early afternoon, the tide was out so the rock bed was very visible.
We now find ourselves at Avenham Park/Miller Park, which melt into each other. I can’t help thinking that Prestonians are being canny in not broadcasting
Once across, turn right onto Broadgate. If, like me, you are a sucker for architecture, then this is the stretch for you. Built at a time of great prosperity for Preston, it offered the burgeoning, new middle classes views of the river but that doesn’t mean they skimped on the detail. The fantastic Georgian properties have been retained pretty much in their original state, and the area as a whole is all the better for it. It’s not hard to imagine what it was like down here 120 years ago. Carry on along Broadgate until you come to the next bridge, and head back over. This particular crossing is, if you have a bit of time, an opportunity to get really arty with your camera. The cobbles and old-style street lamps, with the spire of Penwortham Methodist Church in the near distance, mean this is crying out to be used as a location for one of those BBC period dramas. Back on the south side of the Ribble, we turn left and stride down Riverside Road. Again, there are some fine examples of period property in this part, before it transforms into a river side pathway. Almost immediately, the splendid North Union Railway Bridge viaduct comes into view. Built between 1835
Japanese Garden The fashion for rock and Japanese-style gardens began at the end of the Victorian era thanks to wealthy Britons who returned here from the Far East and were keen to replicate what they had seen. Avenham’s take on it was opened in 1936, having originally been a duck pond before being remodelled using 400 tonnes of rock, costing 19s 6d per ton. The bamboo-style railings are actually made of metal and cost a mere £76. The garden contains specimen trees such as Acers and Magnolias.
90
this too much to the outside world. It is, without doubt, one of the most regal parks I have ever seen. At times, it feels like you are in a National Trust property. Designed and built in the 1860s, it’s an English Heritage Grade II listed attraction boasting a number of historical structures, as well as a lovely Japanese Garden. There’s also a modern cafe, where we stopped for a cappuccino (£2.30) and a bag of crisps (£1.20). I could write pages about the park,
but nothing does it justice more than seeing it in real life. Heading eastwards, we walk down the tree-lined path towards the Old Tram Bridge. This isn’t, in fact, the original Tram Bridge, but a concrete replica of the wooden bridge which was pulled down in the 1960s. In its heyday, the bridge was used to transport coal and other goods from Walton Summit. These goods were then loaded on to barges and sent to Lancaster and Kendal. With all this, it’s easy to overlook the river itself. Apparently, it is an incredibly important waterway for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The first Mormon baptisms took place in the Ribble in 1837 and, to this day Preston remains the home of the oldest branch of Mormons anywhere in the world. Once over the bridge, it’s a dead straight path until you get about 10-15 minutes in (depending on your walking speed) when you veer off right down Factory Lane. This snakes south-westwards until you get to a gate. At this point, turn right, following the sign for Penwortham. This takes you underneath the West Coast Mainline and eventually brings you out on the B5254 opposite Penwortham Fire Station. Turn left, going past the church on your left and the petrol station on your right until you get to a mini roundabout. Ahead, you’ll see the entrance for Middleforth Green park. Follow the path across until you get to the main road (Marshalls Brow). Turn right and then make a left at Hill Road South. You’ll pass a primary school on your left and then, across the road, there’s a path which connects to Hill Road across the A582. Once over, it’s only a matter of minutes before you’re back at the car park. There is much to commend this four mile walk. The history, the architecture, the landscape and the fact that half way round there is the chance for a cuppa. Whether you tackle this walk by foot or bicycle, it’ll give you a new perspective on the North West’s newest city. I spent three hours there and not only did the rain stay off, but I saw no urban sprawl or any traffic jams. Preston, my old sparring partner, you did yourself proud today...

As the saying by Angie Barker
goes
Award Winner
God made rainy days so that gardeners could get the housework done
I
have come across this expression many times and it is so true. Hubby will tell you that I’ll reach for my secateurs and say “I’m just doing five minutes in the garden” only to emerge two hours later. The consequence of this being that I’ve run out of time to do the housework. Gardening is such a rewarding pastime. It can be physically challenging but it doesn’t have to be. There is no greater pleasure in life than pottering. Running a busy garden design business means I usually have a list of things that need doing in the garden within a limited “window of opportunity” as they say. Therefore when I do get the chance to potter (one definition of which is “move or go in a casual, unhurried way”) it is all the more pleasurable. I can’t say that I’ve achieved a lot - that list of things that need doing doesn’t have any ticks against it – but I do feel like I have recharged my batteries. And we all need that from time to time.
teacher and one of the things I have learnt, is that some plants should come with a warning. To be enticed by the beauty of a flower, does not mean that you should grow it in your garden. Whenever you see the word “vigorous” or “invasive” on a plant description label – beware. These are plants that love to multiply. I’m not talking about self seeders here like Foxgloves and hardy Geraniums. These I can deal with. No, vigorous plants are those which seem to want to take over an entire border by sending out underground rhizomes. Plants like Lysimachia, Alstroemeria and Anemones are prime examples – don’t be fooled by their beauty and plant with caution! Well, having dealt with a garden open day and a daughter’s wedding in the last few weeks I feel the need to recharge the batteries and so I’m off to do some pottering. The housework will have to wait and Hubby will have to get his own lunch - again.
There is no better way to learn about gardening than to actually do it. Experience is always the best

A View From The Lump Local gossip, gripes and goings-on Deal or no deal? As soon as I heard that Wigan Council staff had agreed to be filmed for a fly-on-the-wall documentary, I knew there’d be bother. See, despite what sharp suited spin doctors may want you to believe, council employees aren’t an homogenous group; all white teeth and full of exuberance wanting to ‘exceed customer expectations’ (urgh!). Some have dirty fingernails, and exotic vocabulary. And tattoos. Perish the thought. So to throw the spotlight on their everyday stresses, strains and death-byPowerpoint meetings would obviously provide some fruity results. I would imagine the HR
department had palpitations watching the programme. By contrast, I was just praying that the poor dog who won the poop scoop competition wouldn’t croak it during his 15 minutes of fame photo op. Library Street’s finest do like to bang on about The Deal, so here’s a thought. Leave the documentaries to David Attenborough, and instead stop persecuting people who put the odd thing in the wrong bin. Oh yes, and sort out the roads. Deal or no deal?
Hog roasted Never let it be said Wiganers don’t know how to make history. The newest entry into the record books is one man from Shevington who has become the first in the UK to be convicted for motorway lane hogging. Yorkshire plods pulled over painter Ian Stephens, 42, on the M62 a few days after the new law came into force. Mr Stephens believes he’s been made an example of, and may appeal against his conviction, fine and costs of almost £1,000. To use a transporting metaphor, the Government is putting the
cart before the horse here, as the biggest cause of lane hogging is people on the inside lane driving ridiculously slowly. I’m told that there’s no minimum speed limit on UK motorways - maybe it’s high time there was one. Then there’d be less need to use the middle lane.
Frame of mind Speaking of lanes and such, I recently had cause to visit my local bicycle shop to purchase a new set of wheels. Having got a price from the friendly owner, I tootled off to ‘think about it’, which these days means ‘look for it cheaper on the internet’. And I did indeed find it for £40 less on the information superhighway, but in the end decided to keep my custom local. Why? Because since I was in short trousers, whole trades have vanished from the high street through lack of local patronage, and I wanted to do my bit to keep it local. It wasn’t wholly out of altruism; I wanted somewhere local to get my bike repaired should I ever have to. So it helped me and the shop owner. I believe it’s what’s called ‘a win-win’ in modern parlance...
