Plan to Vote The good people of Standish should have by now received details of the referendum being held in the village on Thursday 18th July, when they will have an opportunity to have their say on the Standish Neighbourhood Plan. It’s been five long years since the residents group known as the Standish Voice was formed as a reaction to several proposed housing plans for the village. The plan was initially shaped by the Standish Voice after consultation with local residents, before sending it to the council who have done their own consultations with local residents, before the Planning Examiner chipped in with their views too. If residents choose to approve the plan, then the Standish Neighbourhood Plan comes into being on Friday 19th July, the day after the vote. If residents chose to reject the plan, then the status quo remains. No backstop to argue over, no wild £350m a week promises, no experts sayng ‘We’re doomed, I tell ye, doomed’ and more importantly, no delays. There will be those who will bring out the old stable door saying, and yes, they do have a point, but this referendum is about the future of Standish, not just for Standishers of today, but for those of tomorrow. It’s a huge responsibility for Standish residents, but whether you favour approving or rejecting the Standish Neighbourhood Plan, please do make your views clear by voting on Thursday 18th July. Have a great summer, See you next time.

Countryside Celebration
involved in a range of activities, including bushcraft, axe throwing, archery and shooting.
West Lancashire’s biggest free countryside festival returns on the 20th and 21st of July.
Entrance to the event, which takes place at Beacon Country Park on Beacon Lane, is free. The Green Fayre runs from 11am-5pm each day.
The Green Fayre celebrates countryside living and is firmly rooted in the working woodlands. With displays throughout showcasing a wide range of woodworking crafts, deftly demonstrated by local craftspeople, along with ‘living history’ performances, there’s something to delight the entire family at this year’s Green Fayre. Regia Anglorum will be heading to this year’s fayre, highlighting Skelmersdale’s Viking heritage and delving into how the local landscape was shaped by the skills of its people. There’ll be Viking battle re-enactments in the arena, while Horus Birds of Prey and the West Lancs Dog Display team provide brilliant aerial and agility displays to wow the crowds. Children can also get up close with the mobile farm animals. The Green Fayre also offers the opportunity to get

D-Day Pilgrimage A WWII ambulance made a pilgrimage back to its Normandy roots, thanks to a couple from Standish. Alan and Linda Taberner served in the Army Medical Services as part of Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC). Nearing retirement, they discovered a passion for re-enactments, and decided to form their own field hospital display for the public to enjoy. In 2015, Alan and Linda added a Willys Jeep – converted into an ambulance Jeep – to their medical diorama, and a year later purchased a K2 Ambulance. The couple painstakingly restored each vehicle to their former glory.
But it was the K2 ambulance’s history that really struck a chord. In 1944, the vehicle was sent to Normandy during the allied landings with the 53rd Welsh Division, landing on Gold Beach. Known as a ‘blood wagon’, the ambulance picked up casualties and returned them to board hospital ships, and resupplied equipment for those still fighting on the beach. In June 2019, the K2 returned to that very beach in Normandy to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The 76-year-old ambulance completed nearly 1000 miles over 11 days on the round trip from Wigan to France, visiting historic battle sites including Saint Mare Eglise and Pegasus Bridge. Arriving at the Gold Beach, it joined more than 250 other WWII vehicles on the sand.

Alan and Linda also celebrated the 70th year of the formation of QARANC by flying the flag on the beach. Both vehicles routinely attend public functions, along with a WWII Field Dressing Station, in a living history display housed in Standish. Visitors can hear wartime accounts, learn nursing procedures and have hands-on experiences with period equipment. For more information, call Alan on 07789 098672.

Standish Referendum Thursday, July 18 is a big day for Standish: it’s the

include Southlands Rec and the field opposite Standish High School.
The plan focuses on various elements of village life and, if passed, will be referred to by Wigan Council when consulting on planning applications for the Standish ward. If passed, it will be in place until 2030.
The plan also accounts for the creation of The Standish Loop – a circular path around the village utilising existing bridleways, highways and footpaths with additional signage for cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians. It advocates for renewable energy using brownfield sites and additional public car parking in the village centre.
The Standish Neighbourhood Plan aims to improve the range of shops and businesses within the village, raising particular concerns about the number of takeaways on offer and the lack of public toilets. It also deals with traffic congestion through the village centre, the loss of green space to housing developments and ensuring that any housing put forward for the village centre is suitable to meet the needs of local people. Four green areas have been designated as part of
Polling stations will be set up on the day of the referendum, with postal votes also available. Don’t forget to have your say on the future of your village on Thursday, July 18! You can view the full plan on the Wigan Council website (www.wigan.gov.uk) by searching Standish Neighbourhood Plan.

Summer
reads
Pull up your sun lounger, pour yourself an ice-cold drink and lose yourself in a good book. Little Darlings – Melanie Golding: Lauren is convinced someone is planning to abduct her newborn twins, so when they go missing it seems her fears were justified. But when the twins are found, Lauren is convinced they’re not hers. Have they been swapped for changelings like she believes, or is Lauren suffering from post-partum psychosis? Is she the only one who can save the babies, or is she the one who’s putting them in danger? A chilling pageturner that keeps you guessing. Vegan One Pound Meals – Miguel Barclay: This book proves that vegan food can be as delicious, easy and inexpensive as it is healthy. There are twists on classic dishes, such as ‘artichoke paella’, ‘cashew pesto pasta’ and ‘tomato tarte tatin’, along with plenty of original dishes, such as ‘kimchi tacos’ and ‘sticky aubergine bao’. Most only use a handful of ingredients and all work out at around £1 per portion. Recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a mouthwatering image. The Tattooist of Auschwitz – Heather Morris: If you haven’t yet read the biography of Lale Sokolov, summer could be the perfect time as you’ll want the time to digest this book in peace. Lale was imprisoned in Auschwitz from 1942 and put to work tattooing the other prisoners. During his time at Auschwitz, Lale witnessed both the brutality of the human race, and its appetite for kindness, self-sacrifice and hope. While The Tattooist of Auschwitz is at times harrowing, it is also a love story. A must-read.
The Perfect Wife – JP Delaney: Abbie wakes in a hospital bed to discover everything she thinks she knows to be true is wrong. She’s an AI who’s been created by her tech genius husband using memories of the real Abbie, who died five years before. As she struggles to come to terms with her life, Abbie starts to question everything she’s been told. But when she has no rights, who can she trust? Suspense, twists and moral quandaries abound in this skilful thriller. Cleaning the Gold – Karin Slaughter and Lee Child: Looking for a quick read? This collaboration between bestselling writers Karin Slaughter and Lee Child is just 80 pages long. It brings together two of their best-known characters – Jack Reacher and Will Trent. Will is undercover investigating Jack when they realise there are bigger fish to fry. A perfect slice of fast-paced action to enjoy while you’re waiting for your flight. The Farm – Joanne Ramos: Golden Oaks farm doesn’t grow tomatoes, wheat or potatoes. It grows babies. The surrogate mothers (Hosts) are paid to incubate their rich clients’ embryos. While at Golden Oaks, they have to adhere to strict rules, from giving up their phones to following a diet. The Farm is told from the viewpoint of four women: Jane and Reagan are two of the hosts, while Mae is the brains behind the lucrative business. Ate is Jane’s cousin. The Farm is thought-provoking and topical, but above all it’s a fantastic page-tuner of a story.

Belle of the Whether you’re planning a week in a luxury Caribbean villa or going camping in Cornwall, this little lot deserve a spot in your suitcase. I’m a big fan of dry shampoos, particularly for camping, festivals and lazy weekends. Philip Kingsley’s One More Day Dry Shampoo is a good choice. It absorbs excess sebum, boosts volume and helps to prevent an itchy, irritated scalp. It’s a spray rather than a powder, so won’t leave you looking like you’ve been dusted with talc (unlike some other dry shampoos). The travel-sized 50ml bottle is perfect for holidays, although the 200ml is a lot better value for money. It’s £9-£19.50, see www.philipkingsley.co.uk. I’m very tempted by the new Como Viaggio Travel Styling Kits by Alfa Italia. Each kit comprises a travel hairdryer, mini ceramic styling iron, two sectioning clips and a bag for just £44.95. Travel hair-styling products tend to be a bit ‘meh’ when it comes to power,
Beach
but this hairdryer is 1200w and the straighteners heat up to 190°C. Choose from dusky pink with a matching suede-effect case, or light blue or stone with a leatherlook case, see www.alfaitaliapro. com.
A facial oil can help to tackle dry patches, boost hydration and soften skin. Personally, I prefer a 100% natural oil like Gorgias London’s Age Renewal Facial Oil, which I’ve been using at nighttime for a few weeks now. It’s a 100% natural blend of seed and plant oils, including avocado, prickly pear, olive and argan. The blend is packed with nutrients, vitamins, fatty acids, omega 9 and antioxidants. My skin drinks it up and always feels softer and ‘happier’ the morning after using it. It costs £44.95 from www. gorgiaslondon.com. I know I’m not the only one of my friendship group who slathers on face cream but rarely uses body lotion. If you’re also guilty of neglecting 80% of your skin, AL!VE’s Hydrating Spray Lotion could be the answer. It takes seconds to spray on and absorbs
super-fast. It also feels lovely and cool, so is perfect for freshening up on a hot day. Best of all, you can pick it up for just £5 from Sainsbury’s. If, like me, your legs are less smooth alabaster and more pale mottled mess, fake tan can be your friend. Had a bad experience with bright orange streaks? Modern formulas are a huge improvement on their predecessors. Just exfoliate and moisturise well before you start. Bondi Sands’ Protect & Tan is a great introduction to self-tanning. As the name implies, it helps to protect your skin from the sun and builds a gradual, natural-looking tan over a few days of use. It’s SPF 15 so not strong enough for sunbathing but perfect if you’re popping to the shops. It’s an oil, but not greasy, and it leaves skin feeling softer for hours afterwards. It’s £12.99 at www. boots.com.

The Magnificent Mayflower October offers members of the Standish community the opportunity to help shape the village’s history with the planting of a perennial border at Standish Library. The Mayflower Border commemorates the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower to America in 1620. The ship transported the first English Puritans from Plymouth to America, with 102 passengers and around 30 crew onboard. On-board the Mayflower was military advisor Myles Standish, the eventual commander of the exploring land parties. Little is known about Standish’s early life, but regardless, he helped to secure the colony from the Native Americans. Now a monument to the man stands in Duxbury, New England – a
granite tower which reaches 110 feet, topped with a bronze figure of Myles Standish himself. Now Standish Library invites you to commemorate the Mayflower and its close connection with the village at a preparation and planting event held on Saturday, October 5. The community event will see public volunteers and families helping the Friends of Standish Library plant the border along the front of the library. At the helm of the scheme is local gardening expert and Local Life columnist Angie Barker, who has helped prepare the border ahead of a ceremonial plaque laying in 2020, on the Mayflower’s actual anniversary. For more information about the scheme or the planting, contact Yvonne at yvonnewinstanley@talktalk. net

Make your home office
work harder for you Make working from home less of a chore by designing a room that’s functional and attractive. SORT OUT YOUR STORAGE - While a combination of shelving, files and boxes works well, why not seek out unique pieces to introduce a sense of character? Although chain stores and specialist shops sell office furniture at a range of prices, consider junk shops, second-hand furniture stores and salvage yards for interesting alternatives, such as old school lockers, distressed wall cupboards, huge wicker baskets or old factory trolleys. Some stored items will need to be within easy reach, while those used less frequently can be stored on high shelves or in deep cupboards, or even in another room. If your office is an awkward shape, consider built-in storage to maximise space. THE BEST DESK - Even in a small room, desk area will probably be more useful than floor space, so choose the biggest one possible. A desk with drawers or cubby holes is doubly practical, though minimalists may wish to consider a glass desk: perfect if you can generally keep it clear and tidy. With limited space, consider adding a small worktop to one side of your desk to create an ergonomic L-shaped workspace. ON THE WALLS - Make the most of the height of your room with wall-mounted storage. Pin boards, peg board, magnetic boards and hanging racks are ideal, and wiring one or two adjustable lamps into the wall above your desk also saves worktop space. BE COLOUR CONFIDENT - Why not paint the room in a bold colour that makes you happy, or cover a feature wall (or the whole room) with patterned wallpaper? ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY? - A comfortable chair is essential, and an adjustable office chair on castors is the best choice. You might want to re-cover and/or paint it, or just hang a length of fabric over
the back and add an attractive cushion. SEE THE LIGHT - Good lighting is vital to avoid eye strain. Natural light is ideal, but glare from direct sunshine is not – experiment with the desk’s position and consider a blind for shading. Fit overhead lighting that doesn’t cast shadows over your working area – track lighting, inset ceiling spots and wall lamps are all options. Desk lamps should, ideally, be adjustable. DETAILS MATTER - If necessary, ask an electrician to add plug sockets to minimise messy and inconvenient cabling. About three inches above the work surface is good, plus some lower down and out of sight. Sort the rest of the cables out with ties and clips and consider labelling plugs so you know which is which. DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET PERSONAL - Add a pretty rug, a cushion, interesting desk accessories, a selection of plants, some colourful wall prints or a selection of framed photographs. Scent is important too – make the room fragrant with a vase of flowers, scented candle or reed diffuser, and this will be a room where you’ll enjoy spending time.

Rotarian Honoured Rotarian John Coupe was honoured for 46 years of service to Wigan Rotary Club in June. John, who was also involved in establishing the Standish Probus Club in 2001 as part of his stint with Rotary, held various positions in the club from 1975, including holding the position of President from 1984. Over the years, he has been instrumental in organising the Rotary Town Quiz
alongside Phillip Sudworth, and with the administrative side of Wigan Rotary to help raise money for the Rotary Foundation Charity. Now John has been made an honorary member just in time for his 90th birthday – a fitting tribute to his many years of service. John commented: ‘I’ve very much enjoyed my work at the Rotary Club – although it was definitely hard work in the early days!’

Made in Dagenham The last production of the season scheduled to open at Wigan Little Theatre is Richard Bean’s musical which is based on the 2010 film, Made in Dagenham. This musical is centred round the truelife events of the Ford sewing machinists strike of 1961. Rita O'Grady acts as the spokesperson for the female workers at Ford’s Dagenham plant, who go on strike to fight the inequality that becomes apparent when women workers were to be paid less as they were classed as unskilled. Their stand against injustice led to the Equal Pay Act in 1970 and the women are acknowledged as having played a very significant part in the history of the struggle for equal pay.
Director Tracey Dawson says, ‘I’m very excited about this production, it’s full of great songs and has a great script and although very funny, it tells us a lot about human nature and comradeship. We’ve had a super season and I’m proud that this cast draws it to a block-busting close. The production runs between 17th-27th July and tickets are available at the Box Office in person or by telephone on 01942 242561 between 7pm – 9pm on the Friday, Monday and Tuesday before and each night during productions or anytime online at www.wiganlittletheatre.co.uk

Botanical
Beauty
Whether you prefer small succulents or a giant monstera, use plants and foliage to add a natural touch to your home. Bring Nature Indoors • Shades of green are very on-trend and provide a lovely background for displays of plants. They are easy to live with and combine wonderfully with whites and off-whites, as well as natural materials such as timber, stone and linen. • Botanical-themed

the look relatively subtle, choose small-scale or delicate prints in shades of green and neutrals for background interest. • To make an impact with a display of real botanicals, choose large plants and position in strategic places, as you would a sculpture. Alternatively, place collections of smaller plants together in rows or groups, allowing for contrasts in shapes, colour and texture. Don’t forget to pop trailing plants on a high shelf to create a ‘living wall’ effect. Coordinate pots or planters for a sense of overall cohesion. • Enhance your walls with botanical works of art. Traditional school-style posters are very on trend right now, as are anatomical botanical drawings, eighteenth century-style paintings (used as bold, whole-wall murals) and graphic modern prints.
Group lots of small plants together, contrasting their shapes, colours and textures, to create an impact. Potted plants, from £6, Ikea.

Buying A House In
Joint Names There are several reasons why people buy houses in joint names: • If you’re a couple and want to move in together, it makes sense to have both of your names on the deeds of the property as joint owners. • If you can’t afford to buy a property on your own but want to get onto the property ladder, so you buy a property with friends. • Where your parents, friends and other relatives provide the cash to help particularly first-time buyers on to the property ladder. Whatever your reason for buying with someone else, the chances are that splitting the costs of a mortgage and the living costs of running a house makes sharing the ownership really beneficial. You can usually generate a larger deposit and get a larger mortgage, whilst having smaller repayments. Remember that each of you is liable for the full amount owed on the mortgage, regardless of what share of the property you have. Depending on how much you’re putting into a property (in terms of a deposit), and what your relationship is with the person you’re buying it with, there are different ways of owning the property in joint names. The type of ownership affects what you can do with the property if your relationship with a joint owner breaks down. There are two ways in which you can hold property. These are as either ‘joint tenants’ or ‘tenants in common’. Joint tenants • You have equal rights to the whole property • Your share in the property automatically goes to the other owner if you die • You cannot pass on your ownership of the property in your will • Should you separate in the future you would each receive 50% of the equity in the property
irrespective of who provided what contributions to the purchase price. (This is not always the case on divorce as there are other considerations which a court is obliged to take into account) Most married couples and those in civil partnerships and long-term relationships are likely to be joint tenants, but this is not always the most straightforward or indeed financially advantageous co-ownership for some people. You can later convert a joint tenancy into tenants in common. Tenants in Common • You can own different shares in the property. This can still be an equal share but can be unequal to reflect the differing contributions, which the owners have made both to the purchase price and if applicable, future mortgage payments • Your share in the property does not automatically go to the other owner if you die • You can pass on your share of the property in your will, or if there is no will this will pass to your next of kin under the rules of intestacy • If you separate you will take the share of the equity in the property you have agreed at the time of the purchase When buying as tenants in common, you should have a precise agreement drawn up that details each party’s share. This is usually in the form of a Declaration of Trust or Cohabitation Agreement. The document can be updated whenever there is any change in the co-owners’ circumstances. Prosper’s Three Peak Challenge Standish-based wealth management company Prosper set out to conquer the Three Peaks challenge this summer to raise money for Cancer Research UK and The Alzheimer’s Society.
number of our clients, as well as staff, have been touched by dementia and cancer, and therefore we decided to split our fundraising efforts in support of these illnesses.
The Yorkshire Three Peaks route is 24 miles (38.6km) and includes 1585m (5200ft) of ascent. The challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough –usually in this order, and in under 12 hours.
‘We are absolutely delighted with the support we have received and the generosity of everyone who kindly donated.’
Local financial planners Prosper put a team together to complete the feat in order to raise money for their nominated charities, and, despite very difficult weather conditions (and bouts of cramp), managed to complete it in a very credible 9 hours and 30 minutes. David Barton, Richard Noone, Greg Hearn and friend David Tinsley from 1st Class Travel raised a total of £2,122 to be split between the two charities. Managing Director David Barton commented: ‘A

The Price is
Right!
What makes one house move from ‘For Sale’ to ‘Sale Agreed’ within days and a similar house in the same area stick around for months on end? Usually it comes down to getting the price right in the first place. The most common reason for a property sticking on the market is overvaluing or overpricing. In an effort to secure the property for sale, some of my more silver-tongued fellow estate agents may have deluded the seller into believing the property was worth more than market value. Homeowners naturally want to get the best price for their home. Yet, if you aren’t getting a steady stream of viewers after the first few weeks, then that testing can backfire. It’s understandable setting the asking price high to see if you can get someone to pay that inflated price, but beware keeping the price at that inflated level when it is obvious that there is nobody in the market that will pay that price. Today’s tech-savvy buyers can easily find out how long your house has been on the market as all the internet portals allow you to search and sort by the length of time on the market, and rightly or wrongly, buyers see excessive days on the market as an indication that the seller is becoming desperate to sell because the property hasn’t sold. Buyers are also mindful to believe that there might be something wrong with the home, a defect that has caused other buyers to pass it up. This can concern them when they view the property and can
put potential buyers off even viewing it at all. I’ve lost count of the times I have seen house sellers insist on an inflated asking price, only to reduce 12 weeks later only to see potential buyers still refuse to commit because they think there is something wrong with the property. The unhappy outcome for this scenario is when the homeowner gets fed up and accepts a lower offer just to get the property sold, whereas if the house had gone onto the market at the right asking price in the first place, they would have got a higher price. Consumer champion Which has said that if you have to reduce your asking price by 5% or more, it adds an extra 64 days to the sales process. Those 64 days could make a difference to you buying the property of your dreams or having to settle for second best. The message is clear – if you want to sell your home quickly, then get the price right. If you are looking for further advice on how to sell your home, email me on alan@alanbatt.co.uk or call me on 01942 233999.

Sally’s Specials by Marti of The Star Inn
The Star Inn
Garlic and Rosemary Lamb Shank This slow-roasted lamb shank recipe is a great and easy way to enjoy lamb. This lamb recipe has only a few ingredients, but thanks to the long, slow cooking, the results are an incredibly flavourful meal to remember.
Serves 1 Ingredients 16oz Shank, from your butcher or local supermarket Olive oil 2 cloves of garlic 2 sprigs of rosemary Seasoning 2 carrots 2 stalks of celery 1 small onion 1 pint of beef stock Splash of red wine
Method Preheat the oven to 170°c Start by rubbing a little oil, garlic, rosemary and seasoning into the Lamb Shank. Try to do this the day before cooking to ensure maximum flavour for the final dish. Prepare a small mirepoix of vegetables, this is a flavour base made from diced vegetables. To achieve this roughly cut the carrots, celery and onion. Heat a little oil in a deep roasting tray or casserole dish, ensure the tray is hot but not smoking hot. Next, seal the lamb on all sides and the bottom, until it’s a lovely golden brown. Add in your mirepoix but be careful not to burn the meat or vegetables. If the tray is too hot turn the heat down at this point. Right about now the smells and aroma of the lamb, garlic and herbs should be filling your kitchen up nicely Add in the pint of beef stock and a generous splash of red wine. Now it’s ready to go into the oven! Cover the meat with some parchment paper or baking paper to protect the meat from drying out. Cover again with tin foil and roast in the oven for approximately 3 hours. To check the lamb, open the foil and use a spoon to test the meat, it should be very soft and ready to fall off the bone. The lamb is best served with a red wine sauce, mashed potato and vegetables.
53 Sally’s at The Star Inn was launched in 2007 in homage to landlord and chef Marti’s mother Sally, who passed away in 1996. A great cook herself, it was Sally’s lifelong dream to have a restaurant in her name, and Marti wanted to honour that promise when he took the reins of The Star Inn at Roby Mill.
Fresh Tomato, Basil and Garlic Concasse
This concasse is cooked quickly and because of the fresh ingredients, it’s a tasty and versatile tomato sauce. Adding oregano can make it even better and can be used for a pizza base or to dress spaghetti or penne pasta. My favourite way to eat this is by loading it on to a toasted piece of Bruschetta!
Ingredients
Serves 4
4 tins of chopped tomatoes
Method
1 large onion 2 garlic cloves Handful of chopped basil leaves Olive oil 1 sprig of oregano (optional) Seasoning
To start, strain the tinned tomatoes. Don’t waste the juice, it can be kept and used in other dishes. Dice the onion and finely chop the basil leaves, leave to one side. Blend up the garlic cloves in some olive oil to make a little garlic oil. I like to use Olive Pomace oil, but any olive oil will do. Using a thick bottomed saucepan or small pot, gently heat a little oil. Once warm, add the diced onion and cook for around one minute. By this time your pan is nice and hot, and your onions should be softening but not burning! Add the basil and the tomato chunks, turn the heat up and add the garlic oil. Simmer for another five minutes and season to taste. Serve with fresh pasta or get the kids involved and make a homemade pizza for all the family. To make more, simply increase the recipe and have a tasty and healthy pasta sauce on hand whenever you need it!

Is past performance a guarantee to
future returns? At the time of writing this article (7thJune) the big news in the financial press is that ‘Star fund manager’, Neil Woodford, stopped investors withdrawing money out of his Woodford Equity Income Fund on 4th June, after the sum total of investment withdrawn from the fund reached a staggering £560m in less than four weeks. Kent County Council wanted to withdraw a further £263m but were unable to do so before trading halted. It was reported yesterday in FT.com that two of the UKs largest wealth managers, Hargreaves Lansdown and St James Place were exposed to these developments. According to the FT, Mr Woodford was managing £3.5 billion of funds on behalf of St James Place and that Hargreaves Lansdown had directed £3 billion worth of their clients into his funds. As a result of the fall out, St James Place have now parted ways with Woodford, removing his investment mandate and Hargreaves Lansdown have now removed the fund from their Wealth 50 selection.
Woodford could do no wrong and Prosper Wealth Management were big advocates; we held circa £10m on behalf of our clients in his flagship UK Income and High-Income funds and both delivered outstanding returns for our clients.
So why has it all gone wrong?
Mr Woodford then left Invesco Perpetual to set up his own company, Woodford Investment Management Ltd and many investors followed him, believing that past performance would be a guide to future returns. At the time of launch our investment committee considered Woodford’s new business but decided NOT to jump on board, instead preferring to adopt a let’s wait and see strategy. A decision was later taken not to expose any of our model portfolio clients to his funds.
Investment analysts have attributed this action to the significant poor performance of the fund over recent months. During his time at Invesco Perpetual,

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket Investing is about managing risk and diversification is a key part of this. Committing all your money to one investment manager is never a great idea. By selecting a range of funds, we spread the risk within portfolios. Good governance is essential
Managing money on behalf of clients is about avoiding ‘losers’ as much as it is about picking ‘winners’. This is very much at the heart of our philosophy as a ‘safe pair of hands’. Should you be considering options around investing or looking to review your existing portfolio please do not hesitate to get in touch. The initial consultation is without obligation and is at our expense. The value of investments can go down as well as up. Past performance is no guarantee to future returns. Investing in shares should be regarded as a long term investment and should fit in with your overall attitude to risk and financial circumstances.
A robust governance process is important when managing client portfolios. When selecting funds as part of a portfolio, our established investment governance process ensures that these are regularly reviewed and action is taken where and when appropriate. This framework ensures that we act early on managing any potential risks that may impact portfolio performance. Asset allocation is a key driver to performance It is not just about selecting the right funds. When constructing client portfolios, we take into account the importance of asset allocation. This is the split between different types of investments such as UK and overseas equities, fixed interest and cash. Asset allocation is as important as fund selection.

Pride is
Back!
Wigan’s one and only Pride festival returns this August, helping to celebrate 50 years since the Stonewall Riots. Aptly, this year’s theme is Remembering Stonewall, an event which was instrumental in forging the way forward for equal rights. The riots took place in New York in June 1969, when the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village was raided by police. The gay bar was one of the few places in the 1960s that welcomed LGBTQA+ people, and the subsequent police raid caused those affected to launch activism groups in the city, campaigning for people to be open about their sexual orientation without the fear of being arrested. A remembrance vigil for everyone who participated in the revolutionary riot was held at Believe Square in June, and, in August, Wigan Pride aims to follow in the footsteps of those who first campaigned for LGBT rights. This year’s Wigan Pride event celebrates equality and diversity in a festival of arts, music and positive messages for the whole family. Live music takes to two stages – so far, the line-up for the main Unity Stage includes iconic folk-rock band Merry Hell, Cher tribute Paula Randell and regulars Gypsy Darling and Josh Robinson, while the smaller Believe Stage will play host to tonnes of local talent. There’ll also be the annual Pride Parade, and plenty of information stalls promoting local groups and organisations. The parade begins at Mesnes Park at 11am before proceeding down Bridgeman Terrace and winding through the town centre and onto Millgate before ending up at Believe Square. Pride spokesperson Daniel Bonney commented: ‘It’s great to be able to bring Wigan Pride back again for its fourth consecutive year! Each time it gets better and better, and we can’t wait to show you what we have in store for 2019. ‘As usual, our event is completely free to attend and family friendly. We’ve again been working with Wigan’s Autism Friends to help make it as autism friendly as possible.’ This year’s event takes place on Saturday, August 10 from 11am5pm across Market Place and Believe Square. For more information about how you can get involved in Pride, email info@wiganpride. com or visit www.wiganpride.com

Business View
MTD is now LIVE
Are You? by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy
If you own a business that is VAT-registered then you should already be aware of the significant reporting changes needed by the new Making Tax Digital regime which started in April. This will affect the majority of businesses and the return you submit in July needs to be fully MTD compliant. There is still time to make these changes before that return is submitted, but you need to act now to ensure you don’t get fined. To summarise, all businesses that are registered for VAT and have a turnover above the VAT registration threshold of £85,000 will be required to keep digital records and submit their VAT return to HMRC through MTD compatible software. All the accountancy software providers such as Xero, Quickbooks and Sage offer solutions to ensure that you comply with the new rules, but what if you depend on spreadsheets and manual records? HMRC have declared that those businesses that do keep their VAT records manually or on a spreadsheet, will be able to continue to do so for now. However, the final solution for these businesses will still involve making changes to their current spreadsheets so that they can link to HMRC by bridging software. Therefore all VAT registered business with a turnover of more than £85,000 will need to take action of some kind immediately, if you haven’t already done so. That fact that HMRC are looking to bring more changes to business record keeping in the next few years means that it’s important to try
and make your plans as future-proof as possible. In our view the best way to do that is to switching to a cloud accounting solution will help prepare for these and for future changes. CMA are partners with Xero and Quickbooks, so we are in a good position to help you choose which is best for your business.
Special Offer! We are offering all new clients Xero or Quickbooks software free of charge for 6 MONTHS if they sign up for our services before the end of August 2019. As with any enforced change of this kind, the affect on business owners is demanding but there are some very positive aspects that result from changing to MTD. Many of our clients have already made the switch to online accounting and are enjoying the benefits that it brings. These include saving time, improving cashflow, being able to make better and faster decisions, and improving security too. If you have any questions regarding Making Tax Digital or switching to online accounting systems please do get in touch. Why Doctors are Prescribing
Mindfulness
Mindfulness has gone from buzzword to a therapy increasingly prescribed by doctors. So what’s it all about? Mindfulness is… • Increasing your awareness of what’s going on inside and outside yourself in a particular moment—both physical sensations and emotions. • Stopping to really notice what you’re thinking and feeling and what sparked these thoughts and emotions. How it can help Today, many of us rush through our days, reacting ‘off the cuff’ and missing opportunities to take a breath and appreciate what’s around us. Mindfulness means taking a step back to examine what’s going on rather than just reacting.
evidence that it can ease insomnia, too.
“It’s about allowing ourselves to see the present moment clearly. When we do that, it can positively change the way we see ourselves and our lives,” says Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre,
Noticing the everyday and trying something new: notice the details of what’s going on around you and try a different seat or going somewhere new for lunch to see things in a new way.
By becoming more aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can recognise signs of stress and anxiety earlier and begin to see patterns, recognising those that aren’t helpful. This can make it easier to prevent them overwhelming you or leading you into a spiral of negative emotions or actions that make the situation worse. We can all benefit from mindfulness, but it’s now officially recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to prevent depression in people who’ve had three or more bouts, and is increasingly recommended by doctors for helping with chronic conditions or pain, as well as stress, anxiety or depression. There’s emerging
Practising Mindfulness The NHS recommends:
Watching and naming your thoughts and feelings: “Mindfulness isn’t about making these thoughts go away, but rather about seeing them as mental events,” says Dr Williams. “Imagine standing at a bus station and seeing ‘thought buses’ coming and going without having to get on them and be taken away. This can be very hard at first, but with gentle persistence it is possible.” Identify them. “That’s my worry about my Dad’s health.” “I’m stressed because I’ve got a really busy week.” By being aware of your fears and concerns, you’re more likely to recognise when you’re letting them grow disproportionately to the thing they’re about.
61 Freeing yourself from the past and future: realising that worries about the past or future can dominate, stopping you from enjoying the now. If you realise you’ve been reliving or pre-living negative experiences for several minutes, take a moment to focus yourself in the present, appreciating the day and the moment you’re living now. Taking time out: ideally having more formal, longer mindfulness sessions, focusing on your breathing and your body and bringing your attention back whenever your mind wanders. This could be at home or while travelling. Find the time and place most convenient and helpful for you. The NHS recommends the Mental Health Foundation’s online mindfulness course which can be found at www.bemindfulonline.com, or you can find a local teacher: bemindful.co.uk/learn-mindfulness.

My partner’s lost in
the past
Do you listen to Spotify while your partner still enjoys scratchy cassette recordings? Do you bristle each time he or she switches on the Yesterday channel, or counts out loose change instead of using a contactless card? Age affects people in different ways and if you’re a forward-looking person who is willing to embrace change, it can be frustrating when your partner seems happier living in the past. If you can both laugh off your differences and set them aside, there’s no problem, but if your partner’s behaviour starts to affect your lifestyle as a couple, it could be a red flag for your relationship. At 56, Stephen Adebusi-Jones is two years younger than his wife Mary, but she feels his attitude to life is typical of someone much older. “Steve always wanted to hear the latest band, experiment with different foods and travel to new places,” says Mary. ”But all that stopped after he turned forty five. These days he prefers to stay in, listening to the same music he played when he was young. He even moans when I suggest something different, like trying out a new recipe.” That’s a familiar story for Jamie Barber, who has lived with his partner Mimi for the past twenty-five years. “Mimi’s interest in Sixties nostalgia began when she started buying and selling vintage clothes and jewellery online,” Stephen explains. “She used to enjoy trawling charity shops and online auction sites for vintage buys, but now she just watches reruns of 1960s films and TV shows on YouTube.” It can be hard to understand how a partner who was once positive, optimistic and adventurous could lose those qualities as they age. While it’s easy to accuse them of being ‘stuck in a rut’, a
psychiatrist may take a different view. If your partner is displaying symptoms such as low energy and general loss of pleasure in everyday life, it’s possible they are suffering from a condition called dysthymia. Also known as ‘Persistent Depressive Disorder’ and closely related to depression, this condition can last for years and, thanks to its undramatic symptoms, often goes undiagnosed. A person with dysthymia might suffer from low self-esteem, show little interest in daily activities and seem irritable and ‘down’ much of the time. Avoiding social activities, not getting minor tasks done and losing concentration are also signs of this condition. The good news is that it can be relieved by a combination of talking therapy and medication. If you believe that your partner’s mental health is at risk, you should encourage them to contact a GP. Alternatively you could find help from Age UK, which runs a free counselling service throughout the UK. Call Age UK’s helpline on 0800 678 1602 to locate a counsellor near you, or visit their website at ageuk.org.uk. Whoever came up with the wise old adage “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today
63 is a gift; that’s why they call it the present!” seems to have understood the importance of looking forward, rather than living in the past. If you can communicate that message to your partner, there’s

Nicky Nook
by Chris Pearce
For this month’s Jack’s Tracks we visit Scorton, near Garstang, the gateway to the Bowland Fells, for an excellent and varied six mile walk with great views. The walk takes you gently downwards through the scenic Grizedale Valley and some rather pretty hamlets, before you’re then faced with the sharp shock of climbing Nicky Nook. It’s only when you reach the peak that you realise it’s a mere foothill amongst the other fells to the east, but nevertheless, the views over the Lancashire coastline were still pretty impressive. The starting point of Grizedale Bridge is a bit remote, but the GPS Waypoint is SD 535 490. If that doesn’t mean anything to you then take the road to Lancaster going out of Oakenclough. Once you go
over the first cattle grid and, shortly afterwards, a small bridge, park up in a small carpark-cum-layby on the left. Take the slate path leading away from the car park towards the woods. Once you have gone through two wooden gates in succession, take the path on the left and cross the wooden footbridge over the stream and go into Holme Wood. I’ve never been a big fan walking through woods; it’s often boggy, the poor lighting limits photo opportunities, and accurate mapping can be difficult. However, there are exceptions and Holme Wood, up near Scorton in Lancaster is certainly one. The well-defined path follows the stream all
71 the way through the woods with creative studded boardwalks over the boggy parts, and you’ll soon arrive at Grizedale Dock reservoir. The path bends to the right shortly afterwards, following the direction of an inlet and you come to a fingerpost by a gate. You need to take a left here towards Nicky Nook/Scorton and follow the inlet back in the direction of the reservoir. Ignore the uphill path on the right shortly afterwards (signposted Nicky Nook/Scorton) and carry on in the same direction – you’re going towards Higher Lane on a bridleway. The path continues on a meandering downward trend parallel to the stream for another ¾ mile until you reach a steel bar gate and fingerpost just before a wooden footbridge. Take a 90 degree right turn and follow the footpath (not the bridleway) to Higher Lane. Once you’ve crossed a short piece of open farmland, you’ll enter Peddars Wood and walk uphill until you reach a gate and a single track road. Turn right up the road for around 250 yards and take the footpath on the left after the farm. Walk on the left hand perimeter of the field for 75 yards or
so, and then cut across the field diagonally on the well-defined path. Go through a gate and head across the second field towards the steel circular gate in the distance. Once you’re through, turn left
72 and walk through this pretty hamlet. Approximately 200 yards before you’re due to go under the M6, there’s a footpath on the right. Take the footpath, then go through another stile and plunge into Ghyll Wood. You’ll cross a wooden footbridge and then clamber up the bank on the other side, walking along the top of the bank until you come to a gate. Take the path through the field and you’ll eventually come out on Snowshill Lane. Turn right and follow this road until you reach the entrance to Wrysdale Park. If you fancy a detour at the first-rate Applestore Café (open 9-4pm WedsSun) or a look at Wrysdale Lake then carry straight on. Otherwise, follow the road round to the right, across the bridge and uphill to Higher Lane. Turn left and then immediate right for the uphill trek up Nicky Nook. After a steep initial climb, the path will level off somewhat. After you pass the reservoir on the left, there is an option to fork off and follow the path to the cairn, but for the purposes of the walk we’re following the path right up to the white trig pillar at the peak After a breather, follow the path in the same direction down the hill. As the path bends downwards to the right, you’ll see a gate set in a dry stone wall straight ahead. Go through the gate and head for the brick structure directly ahead, and
when you’ve arrived here, head downhill towards the green box at the bottom of the hill. Follow the path round the green box and once you get to the track turn right and head into the woods once again. After a couple of gates, you’ll arrive at the fingerpost sign by a gate you encountered earlier on in the walk. Turn left here towards Grizedale Bridge and follow the pathway back through Holme Wood until you reach your starting point.

HONDA
CR-V HYBRID
Honda has done away with its diesel-powered cars What is it? Honda’s CR-V SUV has become one of the best-selling SUVs around the globe, as it’s reliable, practical and well-priced. The latest CR-V has also upped the ante when it comes to style, and has adopted a bolder, US-inspired look. An increased wheelbase also results in a far more practical cabin, which has a more premium feel, and there is the option of a seven-seat version on the petrol-powered model.
What’s new? Honda has done away with its dieselpowered cars, and instead chosen to offer the CR-V with a 1.5-litre petrol engine – and this, the Hybrid. Honda aims for two-thirds of its sales by 2025 to be electrified in some way, and this CR-V Hybrid is the only electrified new Honda you can buy today, although the firm has produced electrified models in the past.
75 The CR-V is, however, Honda’s first electrified SUV, and aims to offer a good mix of efficiency and performance.
road and wind noise. In the corners there’s some roll, but that’s a worthy payoff for a comfortable family SUV – providing buyers aren’t expecting thrills.
What’s under the bonnet? It has a 2.0-litre VTEC petrol engine, which is paired to an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack to produce a total output of 181bhp and 315Nm of torque.
How does it look? The latest CR-V has adopted an evolutionary look to its styling. The striking front nose and overuse of chrome undoubtedly helps make it look more American, but it’s hard to deny that it’s resulted in a bold-looking SUV.
There’s a choice of front- or four-wheel-drive, with both featuring an e-CVT automatic transmission. However, the gearbox prohibits maximum power delivery when accelerating harshly, although it remains smooth. It can accelerate from 0-60mph in 9.0 seconds and offers a top speed of 112mph, but it never feels as quick as those figures suggest. The claimed 53.3mpg fuel economy figure also feels a touch ambitious. Around town, it will easily match and exceed that, but on motorways and at higher speeds for longer stints, fuel economy drops below 40mpg, which is disappointing for a model that claims to be so efficient. What’s it like to drive? The CR-V Hybrid firmly sits on the comfort end of the spectrum, rather than the sporty. Supportive seats and a well-composed suspension setup result in a comfortable ride on long distances, while even the large 19-inch alloy wheels fitted to our test car didn’t seem to upset the ride too much. It’s also refined at speed, with a limited amount of
The new car is also wider and more muscular than past CR-Vs and it adopts a similar front end to the latest Civic as part of Honda’s ‘family face’. The CRV’s angular front end makes it one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in its class. All models also benefit from a full suite of LED lights at the front and rear, which certainly help to give the CR-V plenty of presence. What’s it like inside? The CR-V’s interior quality is certainly a big improvement. There are plenty of softtouch materials, as well as a clean, clutter-free layout, and wood trim. The absence of a transmission tunnel also results in a hugely spacious centre console, while a traditional gearstick is replaced by buttons. The seven-inch touchscreen is infuriating to use, and though loaded with features can be difficult to operate. As for practicality, the CR-V excels, even in slightly more impractical Hybrid guise. The standard 1.5-litre CR-V has the option of seven seats, but with the

76 room taken up by the batteries, it’s not an option here. There’s 491 litres of load space to play with, while the rear seats offer plenty of legroom and headroom for adults. You also don’t have a transmission tunnel eating into legroom. What’s the spec like? Go with the entry-level ‘S’ specification and you might feel rather shortchanged, with satellite navigation and parking sensors both missing. However, our high-spec SR grade car came with leather upholstery, keyless start and entry, heated front seats and ambient interior lighting all included. The Hybrid costs over £2,000 more compared to the standard petrol model, which is quite a chunk of money to absorb – particularly when the running costs aren’t exactly revolutionary. Prices start from £30,130 for the Hybrid, with our test car coming in at £34,470. This puts it in a similar ballpark to the Toyota RAV4 – the only direct hybrid rival to the CR-V. Verdict: The CR-V Hybrid’s punchy, relaxed and refined powertrain makes it the pick of Honda SUV’s
line-up, and it’s ideal for town driving where the quietness and efficiency of a hybrid come into their own. As with Toyota, Honda should be admired for pushing ahead with its electrification aims and abandoning diesel in its CR-V – especially as the SUV sector is still dominated by diesel-powered models. But is it a few years too early? Perhaps. For longdistance efficiency, diesels still make the most sense, but for urban drivers wanting a stylish and practical SUV, the CR-V Hybrid could be ideal.

Gardening
Name that
plant!
by Angie Barker Award Winner
What’s in a name? Well with regard to the Latin names of plants quite a lot actually. Part of my job as a garden designer is to think about the plants which will complement a design. This also means choosing those plants which will suit the particular location in the garden in terms of size, colour, texture, flowering season and growing conditions. (There is more to this garden design milarky than meets the eye). I am often asked why plants have such complicated names and at first sight they can be meaningless.
Gracilis is graceful or slender – as in Deutzia gracilis
We have history to thank for the continued use of Latin plant names in an otherwise ‘dead’ language, but when you delve deeper, you can actually begin to understand the properties of a plant and where it originates from, just by its Latin name. Below are some examples of Latin words used to describe plants - you may recognise some.
Only those of a certain age (yes I include hubby and myself in this) will remember doing Latin at school, but far from being a dead language, it certainly lives on in the plant world. If however you would rather refer to Aquilegia vulgaris as Granny’s Bonnet, or Digitalis purpurea as Foxglove or Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ as Black Lilly Turf, I wouldn’t blame you. On the other hand, if you find Latin derivatives as fascinating as I do, then “carpe diem”. (If you are not of a certain age – google it!)
Mollis means soft and/or hairy – hence Alchemilla mollis Bonariensis denotes that a plant originates from Buenos Aires, Argentina. As in Verbena bonariensis Sempervirens means evergreen – so we have Buxus sempervirens (Box)
Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.
Reptans means creeping – Ajuga reptans Angustus refers to narrow leaves and so we have Lavandula angustifolia Macrophylla means large leaves – Brunnera macrophylla ‘Jack Frost’ for example Niger means black and so we have Sambucus nigra Nanu means dwarf so if you are looking for a smaller version of a Berberis you need to look for Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea-Nana’
Whatever you’re up to this summer, whether holidaying abroad or staying at home and in the garden, enjoy.
