Local Life
The Power of Dog Over where we live, there is a piece of waste ground where all the neighbourhood’s dogs and dog owners congregate on a daily basis whatever the weather. I couldn’t honestly tell you a single name of any of the owners or what they do in life; I just know them as the fellow with the two Jack Russells, or the chocolate Lab lady or the Lancashire Heeler couple and so on. When we converse, the subject matter ranges from the weather, to Brexit, sports and obviously all sorts of doggy talk. We listen to each other, have a bit of banter, put the world to rights and then we all go our own separate ways. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if our leading politicians were to walk their dogs and meet up on Westminster Green for a similar chinwag every day? No tribal politics allowed, just getting to know each other and learning to respect each other’s views. It would be a welcome change for politicians to actually engage with each other face to face, without any goading from fellow politicians, interference from special advisers or a running commentary from the media. Would it work or would they use their dogs in a power play to intimidate, like President Putin allegedly did in 2007 when he introduced his big black Lab to Germany’s Angela Markel, who is apparently terrified of dogs. Ok, so the answer to the world’s problems may not lie with dogs, but after 3½ years of Brexit paralysis, surely anything is worth a try to stop our country’s politicians dominating the TV schedules. It’s not for nothing that politics is known as showbiz for ugly people and, if the last few months are anything to go by, showbiz luvvies will soon be setting up group therapy sessions, heavily traumatised by their lack of airtime... See you next time

Fast Fixes From chapped lips and dry skin to acne, tackle your dilemma quickly with one of these problem-solving, wallet-friendly mini-marvels. Puffy eyes or chapped lips? Try Nature’s Kitchen Skin Nourishing Eye and Lip Treatment. This little multi-tasking genius is packed with nature’s finest skincare ingredients, from aloe vera, jojoba oil and avocado to cocoa butter. It even includes hyaluronic acid to boost hydration. It’s very rich so you only need a small amount to tackle fine lines, puffy bags, dark circles and dry lips. Use it as a night-time treatment, or as and when needed. It’s £10.99 at www.lovelula.com.
Super dry skin or mild eczema? Try an oat bath. Pop a handful of organic porridge oats into the foot of an old pair of tights and tie a knot. Drop your oat bomb into the bath while the water is running. It’ll send the water all milky and you can use it like a sponge. It’s a simple treatment, but incredibly effective. Or put the oats in a sieve and hold it under the tap. Feeling a bit meh now the days are closing in and the sun has decided to hang up its hat? Try adding a splash of colour with a bright nail polish. Peacci nail varnishes are vegan, crueltyfree and available in a range
of shades. They’re not gloopy (unlike some polishes), so are easy to apply and mistakes can be wiped off with a tissue if you’re quick. You’ll need two coats for a flawless finish. It’s £10 at www.peacci.com. If your hands feel dry and cream isn’t helping, the answer may lie with your hand wash. Liquid hand soaps usually contain sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), which some people can find very drying. I try to avoid it completely as it makes my hands so dry the skin starts cracking. Thankfully, there are plenty of SLS-free handwashes and bars of soap out there: www.faithinnature.co.uk www.naturisimo.com www.biggreensmile.co.uk have lots to choose from. Or just pop into your nearest Holland & Barrett. Hair feeling dry and parched after the summer? Coconut oil could be your saviour. You can find it in some supermarkets and
health-stores, or buy it online. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature so scoop up around a tablespoon of it and use the warmth of your hands to melt it. Then just smooth it through your hair (avoiding the roots), leave for half an hour and rinse out. Coconut oil is packed with fatty acids and minerals so works like an intensive conditioner. You can also use it as a body oil and cleanser. Tackle spots with Tisserand Aromatherapy’s Tea Tree & Aloe Skin Rescue Stick, £4.50. The blend of antibacterial tea tree oil and witch hazel treats blemishes, while the aloe vera moisturises skin to prevent peeling.

Medal Mystery A Standish woman has uncovered an old medal dating back to Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee back
likely due to Powell’s educational influence as a benefactor at Wigan and Sedbergh Schools.
in 1897 - with a strong connection to Wigan. Mrs Winstanley of Pepper Lane, Standish, found the medal during a routine clear-out, and remembers purchasing it from a local bazaar some years ago. The copper coin was presented to local people with a connection to educational services in the late nineteenth century by Wigan MP Sir Frances Powell to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. The front bears a picture of Queen Victoria, while on the reverse is inscribed ‘Wigan June 22 1897, presented by Sir Francis Powell, Baronet MP’. ‘It’s been a longstanding tradition to rub the foot of Powell’s statue in Mesnes Park,’ Mrs Winstanley said. ‘It’s important that local children remember his legacy, and these medals are definitely a part of that.’ A number of these medals have emerged in the local area, usually belonging to school staff or governors,

Choosing a retirement
hobby
Retirement beckons, and with it the opportunity to do the things you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had time for. However, research by the Skipton Building Society has shown that we don’t always follow up on our dreams of an active retirement: apparently many of us start to feel bored and undervalued within just ten months of stopping work. According to the Age UK Index of Wellbeing in Later Life, the rate of our general wellbeing can increase by 20% if we simply engage with the world around us, whether that’s through social activities in the community, physical activities or creative pastimes. Finding the right hobby can help you make new friends and give you a sense of purpose, which ultimately benefits both your physical and mental health. Sociable hobbies Joining a choir can be one of the most rewarding ways to spend your leisure time. It’s estimated that a staggering 2.8 million Britons now belong to a choir, and recent research has shown that group singing is a particularly fast way to create social
bonds – in other words, it’s a speedy short cut to making new friends. Other ways to meet people include volunteering at an animal shelter, joining a book or film club or local amateur dramatic society, helping at a charity shop, or starting a social media group. Home alone If you want something you can do at home, creative hobbies such as upcycling furniture, card-making or jewellery-making could be perfect. Get inspired by the speedy arts and crafts videos available on YouTube or scour charity shops and second-hand bookstores for cheap ‘how to’ books that can teach you a new skill. Buy vintage jigsaws and share the completed pictures with friends online, write poetry or short stories, take up knitting or baking or learn to fix up an old car. Alternatively, find a pen pal in the UK or overseas with the help of phone apps that make it easy for you to chat to people all over the world. The great outdoors Exercise is important for health. Whether you choose something like metal detecting (which you can do on your own) or Nordic walking (which you would normally do as part of a group), there are so many hobbies that encourage you to explore the great outdoors. Although you may be tempted to put off choosing a hobby until you’ve finally finished work, the evidence suggests that it’s a good idea to have a plan in place. With a little preparation you should be able to walk out of work and straight into a life filled with exciting new possibilities.

Plastic Busting Pooch Wigan author Mark Sanders has released his latest book for children, following the fictional footsteps of a dog called Monty – with a special guest appearance from Sir David Attenborough. Monty Dogge and the Ocean Rescue tackles the growing issue of plastic waste clogging up our oceans, telling the story of Monty the Newfoundland as he heads off with his friend Cookie into the water. The real Monty, however, doesn’t like swimming, author Mark admits. ‘He doesn’t even like going out in the rain!’ Monty has gained a huge international following on his blog, ‘Life According to Monty Dogge’, and regularly goes out to visit local schools to encourage reading outside of school. The 13 stone Newfoundland has now met around 30,000 children at over 80 different schools. The new book has also seen Monty elected as the official mascot for the Ocean Revival 2020
campaign, which will see a group of four Royal Marines row across the Atlantic Ocean to highlight the problem of plastic pollution. ‘I knew straight away I wanted to feature David Attenborough [in the book]’, Mark tells me. ‘I sent him a copy of the text fully expecting a standard letter back from his production company. In less than a week he had sent a handwritten letter saying he was flattered to be included and wishing us well with the book.’ You can find more information about Monty Dogge at http://www.montydogge.com/ and check out the book on Amazon.

Lasting Power of
Attorney
It is often assumed that if a person loses their mental capacity then their ‘next of kin’ will be able to make decisions on their behalf. In many cases, it will already be too late when family members are made aware that they have no legal authority to make such decisions without a Lasting Power of Attorney, even if that person is a spouse or adult child. Very much like the preparation of a Will before death, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) must be put into place before the event occurs. In other words, the document has to be drafted and legally signed by the donor before they lose their mental capacity. Lasting Powers of Attorney are required by law for protection purposes. To prevent anyone from exploiting an individual’s finances, banks or other financial institutions will usually freeze their accounts if they lose their capacity to make decisions themselves as a result of a stroke or Alzheimer’s or Dementia for example. A sale of their property cannot be completed in such circumstances without an LPA. With regard to a person’s health and welfare matters, an LPA is required to allow chosen people to make any such decisions on their behalf. Sean Devlin, Director and Head of the Wills and Probate Department says: “We receive many enquiries from family members who contact us to ask whether a Lasting Power of
Attorney can be put into place for family members so that funds can be accessed to take care of their needs. It often surprises them to learn that the donor needs to pass a test of capacity before the LPA can be put into effect. When mental capacity has already been lost, we are able to assist with the alternative option of applying to the Court of Protection, but this is a lengthy and more expensive process and why we stress the importance of getting their affairs in order whilst they are of full sound mind. It can be easy to put off making an LPA when you are fit and healthy, but a person can lose their mental capacity instantly, for example as a result of a stroke or an accident. It is hoped that you never actually need to make use of your LPA but by putting one in place now means that you are doing so at a time when all of your faculties are in place and not when you are vulnerable, in a state of uncertainty and at risk from exploitation. In some respects, it could be considered that an LPA is even more important than a Will because decisions made by your chosen attorneys will have an impact upon you during your lifetime.” If you would like to put your Lasting Powers of Attorney into place or wish to know more about them please contact Sean Devlin or his colleague Rowena Foat on 01942 246241 or by email to sdevlin@abhlaw.co.uk or rfoat@abhlaw.co.uk.

Putting Down Roots A special planting ceremony is set to take place at Standish Library this month, as volunteers prepare to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower. Despite originally aiming to set sail in July, it wasn’t until September 1620 that a group of English Pilgrims left Plymouth for America. The journey was an arduous one, and passengers had to contend with treacherous weather conditions, food shortages and damage to the ship which had to be repaired mid-sail. It wasn’t until November that they finally arrived in Cape Cod, where they set down the anchor on November 11 after a failed attempt to make it further south. On board the Mayflower for its seminal journey was local resident and military advisor Myles Standish, who would eventually settle the New Plymouth colony. During their first winter in America, diseases like scurvy and tuberculosis rippled through the passengers, killing over half the crew and
passengers. During this time, Myles Standish led a shore party for an exploration of the local area, fending off an attack by Native Americans and discouraging the use of violence against them. Standish also busied himself caring for his fallen shipmates, becoming fast friends with future governor of the Plymouth colony, William Bradford. It wasn’t until March 1621 that they finally disembarked from the ship, and Captain Christopher Jones set about helping build huts on the nearby land. A treaty was eventually established between the Pilgrims and the local Pokanoket tribe. However, the treaty wasn’t without challenge, with various usurpers grappling to take power from its established leader Massasoit. Other tribes too presented a threat to the New Plymouth colony, and Standish was elected as its First Commander. A 110 foot granite tower with a bronze statue of Standish himself now stands in Duxbury, New England as a reminder of his instrumental role in establishing that first Plymouth colony. He eventually built a farmhouse in the nearby Duxbury and settled down in 1628. Standish died of strangury in 1656 and was buried in Duxbury’s Old Burying Ground, now the Myles Standish Cemetery, in Massachusetts. Now, on Saturday, October 5, a planting ceremony will take place with the Friends of Standish Library to place a perennial border along the front of the building. Led by gardening expert and Local Life columnist Angie Barker, the flowers will be prepared ahead of the laying of a ceremonial plaque next year, on the actual anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage to America. Volunteers are invited to go along and help lay the Mayflower border on the day. Planting starts at 10:30am and all tools will be provided, along with refreshments. Learning through
Play
From science kits to marble runs, toys can be as educational as they are fun! Learning through play sees your child developing key mental, physical and emotional skills, as well as a real appetite for knowledge. Most toys can be educational, whether they’re helping your child to learn maths, or just to improve their hand-to-eye coordination. A simple football can help your child to develop their coordination and become better at working in a team. If your child isn’t particularly sporty, the new Scriball from Mitre (£10) might just tempt them. Each kit contains a football decorated with a picture to be coloured in. Marble runs are fantastic for encouraging a child’s creativity, as well as helping to develop their problem solving skills, spatial awareness and handto-eye coordination. Prices start at around £10 for a small kit, but if you fancy splashing out, the Hape Quadrilla Space Run is likely to prove a hit. The 176 pieces allow for plenty of combinations and the glow in the dark stickers add extra excitement. £120 from www.amazon.co.uk.
While children seem to choose their comics based on the free plastic toy, most children’s magazines do include educational activities, from craft ideas to recipes, puzzles and colouring in. • National Geographic Kids Magazine is aimed at the ‘explorers, archaeologists, scientists, artists and astronauts of the future’. Your child could read about endangered animals, lost civilisations, deep sea dives and lots more. A subscription costs from £36 for 12 issues from www.ngkids.co.uk. • Whizz Pop Bang! is a monthly science magazine aimed at 6-11 year olds. It’s packed with fun facts, craft activities and experiments. Each issue costs £3.75, including postal costs. Subscription offers are available, visit: www. whizzpopbang.com. • The Week Junior is a current affairs magazine for children aged 8+. It covers news in bite sized chunks, specially written to appeal to children. There are also features on a range of subjects, from geography to technology and film. Subscriptions cost from £22.99 for 15 issues, visit www.theweekjunior.co.uk. Lots of board games have an educational element. However, the ones by Orchard Toys are undoubtedly amongst the best. Their games are always well-designed, robust and great fun to play for children and parents alike. The bestselling Pop to the Shops sees players move around a board to spend their coins at different shops. Priced from just £4.50, games are available from toy stores, supermarkets and www.orchardtoys.com.

Making STEM
Fun
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are the fastest growing industries in the world. Even if your child doesn’t fancy a career in STEM, they will need to use elements of it throughout their working life. According to The National Science Foundation, “To succeed in this new informationbased and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” So how can you help your child to develop a real enjoyment for STEM? Science There are lots of children’s science sets available to buy, but you don’t actually need any fancy equipment to conduct simple experiments at home, such as: • Asking your child to add a few drops of oil to a glass of water. Discuss what they think will happen. Will the oil and water mix or stay separate? • Finding four old, dull two pence coins. Soak each one in a different liquid (water, coke, vinegar and lemon juice) for a few minutes to see which liquid cleans the coin the best.
Technology Computer programming now features in the National Curriculum and many schools offer basic coding clubs from Key Stage 2. Paul Lyons, IT Director at Ebuyer.com, explains, “Even if your child has no interest in becoming a software developer, they will benefit from skills such as problem solving and following instructions - which can be applied to other areas. Many parents may not know where to begin, but introducing educational aspects into children’s technology use at home can have a real impact on a child’s ability.”
39 There are lots of resources available to help your child at home. Useful websites include: • scratch.mit.edu, which lets children aged six and up learn the basics of creating games online. • codecombat.com: while this American site is mainly aimed at teachers, you can sign up as a parent or student to access a free short course. • www.codeclub.org.uk, which lists coding clubs for 9-13 year olds across the UK. Engineering K’Nex model building sets are a fun way to introduce engineering concepts. The K’Nex Education Introduction to Simple Machines: Levers and Pulleys Set, for example, contains more than 170 pieces, and instructions for building eight mini machines. You can also help your child to make simple structures using household items. Straws and play dough are ideal for building model bridges. Or try searching www.instructables.com for instructions on making structures out of lolly sticks or toothpicks.
Maths Kjartan Poskitt, author of Murderous Maths and Ambassador for the National Young Mathematicians’ Awards 2017, says, “I always say that maths is like broccoli. You either like it or you hate it, but you have to have some because it’s good for you. If learning the tables is driving your child mad, what can you do to sauce them up? The secret is to play around with numbers and get to know them.
Here are a couple of little facts and tricks to get you started: • If you write out the digits 1 2 3 4, you can turn them into 12 = 3 x 4. You can also do this with 5 6 7 8 because 56 = 7 x 8. • Pick any three consecutive numbers (e.g. 4, 5 and 6). Multiply the smallest by the biggest, and then add one. (So here we get 4 x 6 = 24, then 24 + 1 = 25). The answer is always the same as the middle number squared (5 x 5 = 25).”

Encouraging a love of
Reading
According to BookTrust, children who enjoy reading tend to have better literacy skills, increased vocabulary and enhanced general knowledge. Reluctant readers may need some extra help to discover their inner book worm, however. Lead by example Show your child how much you enjoy reading, even if it’s just by flicking through a cookbook or burying your head in a magazine. You could also take family trips to the library, give books as gifts and talk to your children about the books you’re both reading. The BookTrust also recommends that parents and children try reading the same book occasionally. You could take turns reading a chapter aloud or you could both read on your own and then discuss what you like and dislike about the book. Let them choose There’s a temptation to guide children towards ‘suitable’ books but try to let your child choose their own. Some may prefer factual books, such as Horrible Histories, over fiction. Others may prefer magazines or short stories that they can dip in and out of. Meet authors Libraries, bookstores and other venues often have visits from local authors, who will give a talk, read an extract from their latest book and answer questions. Search for ‘author’ on www. eventbrite.com or sign up to your library’s mailing list. Many towns and cities now host an annual book festival, which often includes talks by children’s authors. Find your nearest one at www. literaryfestivals.co.uk.
Interactive books Children who find reading too passive an activity might prefer books with interactive elements. Usbourne’s Puzzle Adventure books are a good place to start. They tend to feature two main characters who have an adventure and are faced with a series of puzzles, such as coded letters and cryptic clues, which the reader helps to solve. You could also look for ‘choose your own adventure’ books, where the story unfolds depending on which paths the reader decides to take. Omegas Omega oils have long been linked with brain power, and new research has found that a combination of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may improve children’s reading abilities. This research was carried out on behalf of supplement brand Equazen. Children on Equazen’s omega supplements showed a 64% greater improvement in reading comprehension than the group not on supplements.

Get
Creative Whether they’re slaying dragons or discovering new worlds, children’s imagination knows no bounds. When it comes to creating stories with characters and plots though, it can be difficult to get started when faced with a blank page. A few props and story prompts can really help to get those creative juices flowing.
Creating characters Fill a cloth bag with accessories, such as perfume and aftershave samples, a silk tie, an old pair of glasses, a toy, a brooch, a hat, a watch and other personal items. Scour your local charity shops and ask friends for donations. You could also add a few fantastical items to the bag, like a pirate hat, fairy wand, bottle of witch’s potion, toy spaceship and so on. Ask your child to choose two or three items from the bag, without looking. Then ask them to create a character based around the items. Ask questions to help. What does the character look like? Are they male or female? How old are they? What do they like doing? Where do they live? Your child can then write about their character, or draw a picture of them, or both.
Short Story Prompts: • Going to space • Getting lost • Inventing something • A wish comes true • Discovering a superpower • Finding an injured animal • Discovering a secret door
Creating stories If your child is struggling to think of a story, creative prompts can help them to get started. You could come up with a scenario and ask them to think about what might happen next. For example, ‘Your character finds a door hidden behind a bookcase. It’s only two feet high, so they have to crawl through it. What do they find when they do?’ Fold each story prompt up so it can’t be read, and ask your child to choose one or two. They can then use the prompts as the basis for their story. Don’t be too rigid. If they don’t like the prompt, let them pick another. If they have a different idea for a story, even better!

Extra resources There are lots of free online resources to help you. A good place to start is www.youngwriters.co.uk, which offers downloadable workshops and activities. Creativity for Kids makes fun craft kits, including Create Your Own Pop Up Books. The kit includes two books, several colouring pens, stickers and pop-
up elements. It kept our young testers entertained for a good couple of hours, and the results have become treasured keepsakes. The kit costs £16.50 and can be bought from Amazon, Hobbycraft and independent arts and craft shops. If your child needs a bit of motivation, they could enter a competition. Libraries and literacy organisations often organise or advertise children’s creative writing competitions, as do: Writing Times: www.writingtimes.co.uk Young Writers: www.youngwriters.co.uk Families Magazine: www.familiesonline.co.uk

How to
Save and Make Money at University
One of the trickiest but most important parts of university life is managing your money. Budgeting for food, clothes, nights out, books and study materials can be overwhelming at first, but there are ways you can help yourself.
Apart from the extra cash in your pocket, you can still be sociable without the expense of eating out, impressing your friends with gastronomic delights. It’s a good idea to plan your meals ahead and only buy what you need each week, avoiding ready meals if possible, as although they’re convenient, they’re generally bad for your health. Also, stick to buying own-brand products that can usually be found on the lower shelves in supermarkets, where you might not normally look.
Ways to make money at university Get a part-time job
Here are a few tips to help you spend less, save more, and earn money at university, so you can stop worrying about finances and make the most of this precious time in your life.
Ways to save money at university Make use of technology All you need is your mobile phone. There are apps to help you save on food, that show you how to budget, and that keep an eye on your data usage. Keep your food costs down by making a list of your favourite ingredients, and an app will let you know the cheapest places to buy them locally. You can also track your expenses with a budgeting app. Just type in how much you spend each day, and what you’ve bought – at the end of the month, a report gives you a round-up of where your money is going, so you can adjust your spending if necessary. Learn how to cook Learning how to cook from scratch is a valuable skill for life, but as food is one of the highest student expenditures, it’s also a vital part of saving money.
Retail, catering, and hospitality are just three areas where you could pick up a part-time job with fixed hours that fits in with your studies. Although you may need to forsake some evenings and weekends, payday could make it worthwhile to miss out on a few social occasions. Another idea for part-time work, and one that’s a little more flexible, is mystery shopping. You sign up with a mystery shopping agency, or directly with an independent company, and get paid for checking the level of service provided in their outlets. Promotion work and flyers Handing out flyers around campus and promoting club nights or events on the streets of your university town can earn you some extra money, but be sure to find out whether you’re working on a commission or a ‘per hour’ basis. If you’re sociable and good at marketing, you could even apply to become an on-campus ‘brand ambassador’ for a household brand name. You might be able to organise your own promotions and events for the brand, and make a name for yourself in marketing.

Tech for the New
Term
It’s that time of year again: schools, colleges and universities are readying for a new term and parents are running around trying to get everything their children need. Increasingly that includes technology, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation. It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can get almost all the TV you want for free,
entirely legally, via the internet and most catch-up TV apps (BBC IPlayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a goodsized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best all-rounder is a Windows 10 laptop – the Acer Chromebook is a cheap option with a long battery life for lectures and beyond, while the Dell XPS 13 is a much pricier option at £1,199 but offers a full touchscreen and beautifully refined graphics. There’s another option: tablets such as the iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to
a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £769) with another £179 for a keyboard cover or £89 for the Apple Pencil. Kindles can be a more lightweight alternative to hefting heavy textbooks around, with over 3 million eBooks to choose from in the Kindle Store. It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be.

How to Create your Garden by Adam Frost
A book about the bond between siblings, the repercussions of past events and the attachment people can feel for a place. In this case, the place is a big, grand house, and the siblings are Danny and Maeve. Their mother flees when Danny is just a toddler, leaving Maeve to step into her shoes. When the children gain a stepmother, they soon learn they’re not welcome in their own home and the future they had planned comes tumbling down.
During spring and summer, it can be a challenge to maintain the garden. Come autumn, it’s a bit easier to manage, so it’s a good time to start planning for next year. This book is packed with practical advice, from designing walkways to building water features. Step-by-step instructions, bright photos and illustrations, and an easy-going writing style make the process of garden design more enjoyable.

Pierrepoint: Hangman
Extraordinaire By Jess Phillips For children considering future career paths, you’d generally expect answers of ‘athlete, ‘soldier’ or ‘teacher’. ‘Hangman’ would be pretty far down the list – but that’s exactly what a young Albert Pierrepoint – who would later be known as ‘the Southport Hangman’ - announced he would become when asked at school. In his long career as a hangman, Pierrepoint would go on to execute one of Wigan’s most notorious killers: Norman William Green. Both Albert’s father Henry and Uncle Thomas were official executioners in the early twentieth century; Albert cited the ‘steady hands’ that ran in the family as his reason for following in their footsteps. Henry Pierrepoint was an alcoholic, removed from the list of executioners in 1910 after turning up to a prison drunk the day before a hanging was scheduled to take place. In 1917 Henry’s health
declined, leaving him unable to work and forcing young Albert to learn a trade as a learner tuber at Marlborough Mills. Henry began to train Albert in conducting executions using rope and sacks of corn, as he’d trained his own younger brother Thomas. Albert’s own career in executions began in 1931, training for four days at Pentonville Prison in London with a dummy. He became assistant executioner by 1932 and assisted in his first execution in Dublin that December, under the instruction of his Uncle Tom. Albert was promoted to Head Executioner in 1941, and became renowned for his accuracy when conducting a hanging. Ahead of the execution he’d evaluate the prisoner’s build through a Judas Hole – a one-way peephole - in the condemned cell, before testing the equipment in the execution chamber next door. Prisoners were taken to the yard or to the chapel so they didn’t have to hear the practice runs taking place, a dignity Pierrepoint was adamant they receive. The length of each drop was calculated using the Home Office Table of Drops, allowing Pierrepoint to achieve a nearperfect Hangman’s Fracture every time. He recorded these calculations in a diary that was auctioned off along with a plaster cast of his face and hands in June this year. The collection sold for £20,000.
Thomas Pierrepoint & Albert Pierrepoint
Following the Second World War, Pierrepoint was responsible
55 for hanging numerous war criminals including the notorious concentration camp commandant Josef Kramer – known as ‘The Beast of Belsen’ – and Irma Grese, the ‘Hyena of Auschwitz’. Infamous for her brutal treatment of female prisoners at Auschwitz, Grese would allegedly select only the most beautiful women to go to the gas chamber out of jealousy. It was also said that she had gruesome lampshades made from prisoners’ skin in her quarters. Among Pierrepoint’s later hangings was Wigan man Norman William Green, known for stabbing two young boys to death. The first victim was William Harmer, found in a field off Miry Lane in 1954 by a passer-by. Harmer later died in hospital from the eleven stab wounds Green inflicted. On that same night seven year old William Mitchell was also stabbed by a man fitting Green’s description, but two men came to his rescue and chased the attacker away. Not so lucky was ten year old Norman Yates, who Green attacked a year later in Back Hope Street, Ince. Yates died from his injuries.
Green pleaded insanity in court but was convicted after confessing to the murder of the two boys. He was hanged by Pierrepoint in July 1955 at Walton Jail in Liverpool. The last woman to be hanged in Britain also met her end at Pierrepoint’s noose. In London, former model and club manager Ruth Ellis shot her ex-lover David Blakeley five times. Despite her solicitor appealing to the Home Secretary, Ellis declared she wanted no part in appeal proceedings and regardless, was told she would not be reprieved. Her execution was carried out in 12 seconds.
56 One of the most famous – and most controversial – cases in Pierrepoint’s execution history was the Rillington case. 25-year-old Timothy Evans was said to have the mental age of a 10-year-old when
Irma Grese
he first confessed to the murder of his wife and daughter at number 10, Rillington Place in Notting Hill, and then later protested his innocence. After Evans was hanged by Pierrepoint, it transpired that his landlord John Christie was responsible for the murders of several women in the area and had hidden their bodies in the house. Evans was later posthumously pardoned. Both a film and TV miniseries about the case were released, in 1971 and 2016 respectively. Pierrepoint resigned from the list of executioners in February 1956 and retired to Preston New Road in Southport. Locals describe him as a friendly man, often passing out sweets to Southport children and never short of a smile. For a time he was also landlord of the Rose & Crown pub in Much Hoole. In total, ‘the Southport Hangman’ executed between 400 and 600 people in his career as a hangman. Despite this, his friends described him as a far cry from the sombre executioner figure; rather, they described him as ‘very jovial’ – the ‘life and soul of the party’.
One of these friends was a regular at Pierrepoint’s first pub, Help The Poor Struggler in Oldham. The duo would perform duets together and nicknamed one another ‘Tish’ and ‘Tosh’. Corbitt strangled his mistress Eliza Woods in 1950 and scribbled the word ‘whore’ on her forehead; Pierrepoint was tasked with executing his friend when he pleaded guilty at his trial in Liverpool. In the death cell, Corbitt and Pierrepoint exchanged their usual greeting, and when leading him to the gallows, Albert said kindly, ‘Come on Tish, old chap’. Of the incident, Pierrepoint wrote in his 1974 autobiography, ‘[Tish] was not only aware of the rope, he had the man who handled it beside him singing a duet. The deterrent did not work.’ It was perhaps the hanging of his friend that began to shift Pierrepoint’s view on capital punishment. He declared: ‘I now sincerely hope that no man is ever called upon to carry out another execution in my country […] All the men and women whom I have faced at that final moment convince me that in what I have done I have not prevented a single murder.’
Ruth Ellis
Albert Pierrepoint died in 1992, aged 87, at Melvin Care Home in Westbourne Road, Birkdale. His death was registered in Liverpool, though his burial place remains undisclosed.

Changing
Face
The need for more homes in the UK has oft been quoted as the major part of the UK housing crisis, but a number of changes have been made to planning permission rules to try and ease this issue. And as a result, it’s now easier for homeowners to build an extension for your house than it has been for a long time. Of course, one of the main reasons for people moving is the need to upsize to accommodate growing families, and so in 2013 and 2015, the planning permission rules were relaxed. In 2013, temporary planning rules were introduced to allow larger single storey rear extensions without the need of a full planning application. These rules allowed terraced and semi-detached homes to be extended by 19ft, and detached houses were able to add extensions of up to 24ft. And since then, 109,320 households have taken advantage of the temporary rules. These temporary rules have now been made permanent recently and is part of a package of planning reforms to build more households, build them better, quicker and make the housing market work, meaning families can grow without being forced to sell and move… or does it? Well, yes and no.
consuming. However, as many canny householders have used these rules to build a decent size grannyannex, it is still freeing up Granny’s old place. There was a second temporary change made in 2015, which may have a bigger impact on the housing market, particularly in town centres. The new rules allow office blocks and shops to be converted into residential homes without a full planning application being made. Since 2013, 11,090 office blocks and 1,750 shops have been converted into residential households. This doesn’t sound a lot, but in 2017 alone, converted shops and office blocks provided 37,000 new households alone in the UK, which equates to an impressive 7% of the new households created in 2017. Over the next decade, more and more office blocks and shops will be converted into residential properties, and this will slowly change the dynamic of the housing market and the high street. So, will these changes ease the housing crisis AND breathe some life into our dying high streets? Only time will tell.
These relaxed rules only relate to single-storey extensions, which means if families want an extra

We bring you the latest trends in the UK's housing market, with a detailed focus on WN6 area. House prices Property prices remained virtually static in June, the average price of a property ÂŁ230,292 up just 0.7% on May. Year-on-year prices have risen by 0.9%.
Economy Wages rose 3.9% in the three months to June, the highest rate of growth since 2008 according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics. Wage growth continues to outstrip inflation, inflation in June 1.9%, the same as May and down 0.1% on April.
Transactions The HMRC report that transaction levels in July were 12.4% below the same month a year ago. It is worth pointing out that that the June 2019 figure has just been revised from a 16.5% fall to a 4.7% fall. It is likely that the July fall is not as substantial as is being currently reported.

Sally’s Specials by Marti of The Star Inn
The Star Inn
Sally’s Salt ‘n’ Pepper Chicken This dish is absolutely delicious, jam-packed with fresh ingredients and flavour that will set your taste buds alight!
Serves 2 Method Start by adding the chicken pieces into a mixture of plain flour and the Salt ’n’ Pepper seasoning. Once the chicken pieces are fully coated, drop them into the fryer for 1 minute to form a crisp outer coating. Meanwhile in a large frying pan heat a little oil on a medium heat. Once the oil is hot add the chillies, onions and peppers, cook down until everything is soft and be careful not to burn them. Next, add the chicken pieces, garlic, chicken stock and sweet chilli sauce and toss gently. Cook together for another 2 minutes, this finishes off the cooking of the chicken and reduces the stock making it lovely and sticky. To finish, add the coriander. The chicken will be cooked thoroughly and should also be soft and tender. Divide into 2 bowls and serve with aromatic rice. Delicious!
Ingredients 1 white onion, sliced 1 red and yellow pepper, sliced 3 large cloves of crushed garlic 1 pack of roughly chopped coriander (including stalks) 2 tbsp of salt and pepper seasoning 5 tbsp of sweet chilli sauce 1/4 pint of chicken stock 1 green and red chilli, de seeded and diced 2 chicken breasts diced into strips (around 5 pieces per breast)
65 Sally’s at The Star Inn was launched in 2007 in homage to landlord and chef Marti’s mother Sally, who passed away in 1996. A great cook herself, it was Sally’s lifelong dream to have a restaurant in her name, and Marti wanted to honour that promise when he took the reins of The Star Inn at Roby Mill.

Choosing Your
Financial Adviser Like your most influential teacher at school, a good financial adviser should inspire, advise and reassure you, so that you can enjoy a better financial future. Whilst a poor adviser will put their interests before yours and sell you a product you don’t really need and have no interest in your future. Worryingly both advisers will be FCA registered, both have at least a Level 4 qualification, and both will sound plausible. So how do you select the right adviser for you? The right qualifications You want an adviser who takes professional knowledge and development very seriously and is completely independent. Look for an adviser who is a Chartered Financial Planner or a Certified Financial Planner - or is actively working towards these qualifications. These are Level 6 qualifications - equivalent to a university degree and are the “Gold Standard” amongst financial advisers. Advisers who have achieved this level of technical competence have demonstrated that they are capable of dealing with clients that perhaps have more complicated financial planning requirements. A clear plan A good adviser will ask challenging questions and map out a plan to achieve your goals. They will spend considerable time listening to you and asking smart questions to help you define your short, medium, and long-term objectives, to determine your desired future lifestyle. Your adviser will create a financial plan to meet your objectives, ensuring that account is taken of tax-efficient planning such as pensions, and considering estate planning too. You can be certain that events won’t turn out exactly
as the plan indicates, and your adviser should review and update the plan on a regular basis. Relationships count Your financial adviser will become an important professional person in your life so it is essential that you get on well. Ask yourself whether the adviser really cares about you, genuinely wants you to reach your goals, and is willing and able to challenge you along the way. And finally, fees Fees should be open, transparent and fair. You should feel you are getting good value for money. Given that a good adviser could potentially make a difference of many thousands of pounds to your financial position over time, we suggest that you base your decision primarily on qualifications, approach and relationship as opposed to price alone. Should you wish to have a chat with one of our qualified financial planners please feel free to give us a call on 01257 423800. We are on the high street in Standish and have client parking. Xero the Hero by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy 5 Reasons why your business needs Xero Xero is the leading online accountancy software for small businesses in the UK. The development of online software has seen a shift from desktop products such as Sage to modern, intuitive online products such as Xero and Quickbooks. CMA have been partnering with Xero since 2010 and here are some of the reasons why we love it: 1. Real time information - Xero’s focus is on realtime information and not on giving you a historic view of your business. The dashboard gives you a current view of your cash and bank balances and outstanding bills and invoices. 2. Daily bank feeds - Your bank transactions feed directly into the software, showing incoming and outgoing transactions as they happen. 3. Automated bookkeeping - By linking Xero with products such as Receipt Bank and Auto Entry, purchase invoices can be automatically scanned and uploaded into your Xero data, so no manual input is required. This not only saves time but reduces the risk of human inputting errors. No need for files of paper invoices, as all documents are saved in the cloud. 4. Online sales invoices - No need to print and post out sales invoices as these can be sent automatically online. This saves on printing and postage costs and also avoids postage delays so you many even get paid quicker! Xero has a credit control function and can send out automatic chaser emails for unpaid invoices. 5. Access anywhere, anytime - Unlike desktop accounting packages, Xero can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. So when you need those numbers fast, they’re always available.
In addition to these features, Xero is fully compliant with Making Tax Digital and therefore submitting your VAT return via the software ensures that you are staying on top of the changes being introduced by HMRC. We have seen first-hand how Xero can revolutionise businesses. It enables CMA to work closely with our clients and proactively help them make better decisions. We can assist you in a number of ways by either helping you set up the software, train you and your staff to get the most from it or you can leave everything to us and we’ll process your bookkeeping and send you a report at the end of each month so you can see how your business is performing
Special Offer For a limited period we are offering all new clients Xero software free of charge for 6 MONTHS if they sign up for our services before the end of October.
We offer a free consultation for anyone that would like to speak to us about these changes – just drop by our office on Skull House Lane in Appley Bridge. Everything you need to know about the
Menopause
Since menopause affects roughly half the population, it’s important for men to understand it as well as women, because it will affect their mothers, sisters, daughters, partners and colleagues.
What is the menopause? When the ovaries begin to produce less oestrogen and no longer release an egg every month, periods stop. Menopause is marked by a year without periods. In the UK, the average age of menopause is 51, with the vast majority of women reaching menopause between 45 and 55. However, perimenopause – the pre-menopause phase where oestrogen levels are dropping – can last for months or years, as can symptoms (which may persist for years after periods have stopped). While some women pass through perimenopause and menopause without any problems, most have symptoms of some sort. For an unlucky minority these can be severe and long-lasting, with profound effects on their physical and mental health.
Symptoms and side-effects Hot flashes/flushes – Women may experience sudden sweating or flushing, or just feel uncomfortably hot, usually for just a short time (hence, hot ‘flash’). The flushing and heat are typically felt in the face, neck and chest. Some women suffer more at night and have ‘night sweats’. Breast tenderness and changes – during perimenopause, it’s quite common for women to experience tenderness, sensitivity, lumpiness, aching and throbbing pain as fluctuating hormones affect the ducts and fluid retention in their breasts. They may also sag more and/or become less full. Women should always see a doctor urgently if
there is nipple discharge, a hard lump which can’t be moved around, a marked change in the shape of the breast, dimpling on the surface, a rash around the nipple or sinking of the nipple into the breast. Worsened premenstrual syndrome – breast tenderness, irritability, mood swings, irritability, fatigue, bloating, appetite and libido changes. Decreased libido – some women also find sex less pleasurable, and physical discomfort caused by vaginal dryness can make this worse. Urine leakage and urinary urgency – such as leaking urine when coughing or sneezing and needing to urinate more urgently and/or frequently. Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) Memory or concentration issues – these symptoms can make women lose confidence in their abilities and feel frustrated, damaging selfesteem and potentially leading to anxiety. Palpitations (heartbeats that suddenly feel more forceful or noticeable) or a racing heartbeat. Irregular or unusually light or heavy periods – some women experience ‘flooding’ (excessive and/ or sudden blood loss) during perimenopause, and should always see their doctor if this continues. Vaginal dryness – this can cause itching and
73 discomfort, and make intercourse uncomfortable. Skin issues – dryness, itchiness or ‘crawling’ sensations.
Reducing symptoms and side-effects Lifestyle changes: regular exercise, stopping smoking and reducing alcohol intake will help, along with a healthy diet containing plenty of fruit, vegetables and calcium-rich foods. Caffeine, smoking and alcohol can make hot flushes worse, and spicy foods may be a trigger too. Keeping the bedroom cool: this can make sleeping easier and reduce night sweat discomfort. Get enough calcium and Vitamin D: getting adequate sunlight (essential for producing the Vitamin D necessary for healthy bones) is important. A supplement may be helpful. CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy): this therapy can help to reduce anxiety and depression and also increase confidence and self-esteem. Reducing stress: stress can aggravate menopausal

symptoms, so reducing stress can make the menopause easier to cope with. Low dose contraceptive pills: these pills can reduce menopause symptoms, regulate periods and make periods lighter. They also help to prevent bone loss (which can lead to osteoporosis) and reduce ovarian and uterine cancer risk. HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy): available as tablets, patches, gels and implants, these treatments replace dwindling hormones and so reduce the symptoms and risks of menopause, such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Testosterone supplements can restore libido. Vaginal oestrogen treatments: Available in the form of a cream, pessary or ring, they can improve vaginal dryness and discomfort. Non-hormonal vaginal lubricants: Helpful if vaginal dryness is causing discomfort, particularly during intercourse. Lubricating eye drops and oral sprays: To relieve a dry mouth and dry eyes.

snoring
Snoring is a common problem but shouldn’t be ignored. It can affect your sleep, mental health, physical health and relationships, and may also indicate sleep apnoea. Try lifestyle changes to tackle snoring, and ensure you sleep on your side (a tennis ball taped to the back of your nightwear or a bed wedge can help).
Solution: A mandibular advancement device, which helps to bring your tongue forward.
If this doesn’t help, you need to identify the cause of your snoring by using The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association’s questionnaires at britishsnoring.co.uk/itests to find treatment.
Solutions: A chin strap, or a vestibular shield (worn in your mouth so you breathe through your nose).
Problem: Your tongue partially blocks your throat.
Problem: Your mouth falls open when you’re asleep.
Problem: Blocked or narrow nasal airways. Solutions: Nasal dilators or strips that hold your nose open, or sprays to reduce nasal swelling. If these solutions don’t work, DO see your GP. They may refer you to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. Could you have sleep apnoea? Symptoms of sleep apnoea include loud snoring, especially on your back and short periods when you stop breathing or gasp. Risk factors include a large neck (17+ inches for men, 15+ for women), a narrow airway, nasal congestion and a family history of OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea), when the muscles of the throat collapse. OSA sufferers may have repeated episodes of apnoea and/or hypopnoea throughout the night. Don’t ignore symptoms, as sleep apnoea increases risk of high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, type 2 diabetes and gradual loss of brain function. Treatments for OSA include lifestyle changes, a CPAP device which delivers compressed air through a mask and prevents closing of the airway, a mandibular advancement device or surgery, if your OSA is caused by a physical problem that can be physically corrected. Sandstone Trail
by Chris Pearce
Distance: 7 miles Difficulty: Medium/Hard A head for heights and a sure-footed nature are necessary for this 7-mile walk which, in parts, follows part of Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail. The Trail stretches for 34 miles through Cheshire, it has been voted by ITV viewers as one Britain’s Favourite Walks, and it’s easy to see why. On the first half of the walk there are a couple of flights of steep steps to navigate, which are set in the sandstone cliffs, and some breath-taking sheer drops, but you also need to be aware of lots of protruding tree roots and random sandstone rocks. Park up at the free car park off Simons Lane (WA6 6HQ) near Frodsham – look for the phone masts. At the entrance to the car park turn left and follow Simons Lane downhill until you see a bungalow (Overhill) and turn left up the shared driveway/ footpath. Follow the footpath right up to and over the driveway to a care home (Heathercliffe), and carry on down a wooded path downhill. Once you reach Bellemonte Road, turn right and turn left when you reach the Bellemonte pub. Look out for the footpath sign on the right and follow this down into a wooden area. You’re faced with a fork almost immediately and you need to bear left. You’ll pass a Frodsham Hill Wood sign and straight after a fingerpost; head for Delamere/ Beeston and carry on in that direction on the ridge of the wooden area, ignoring various turn offs (including one uphill for the Sandstone Trail). Tantalising glimpses of the Mersey coastline appear through the trees as you follow the path, and uninterrupted view are far and few between at this time of year. Shortly after passing Alf and Grace’s bench you’ll arrive at a fingerpost, go down the wooden stairway and then you’ll come to a fork; bear left if you want to clamber down some very

79 steep and large steps set in the sandstone cliffs or carry straight on if you want to go the much safer route and follow the path down two flights of metal steps. Either way, you’ll arrive at another fingerpost and you should follow the sign to Delamere. A few yards further on you’ll cross a wooden bridge and come to sign number 596, indicating you need to climb up the steep cliff steps on the right (towards Whitchurch). Once you’ll get to the top, you’ll be by the 10th hole of Frodsham Golf Club. Follow the path until you come to another bench, this one dedicated to David Nicholls. At this point the Sandstone Trail itself weaves uphill, but instead carry on in the same direction until the wood opens up somewhat, and look out for a ½ fingerpost sign; take a 90 degree left turn here and, when you come to a ‘proper tree’ sign, bear left uphill and when you arrive at the next fork, bear right staying on somewhat level ground. Once you arrive at the next fingerpost, take a 90-degree right turn and follow the Sandstone Trail all the way downhill for over ½ mile until you reach The Ridgeway Road. Turn left uphill for 150 yards and once you arrive at the Ridgeway Country Holiday Park, look for the footpath opposite. Climb up the steps of the footpath, then more steps downhill and bear left when you reach a brook follow the path parallel to the brook and cross the wooden footbridge a little further on.
80 Take the path uphill and follow the path round the edge of the woods, bearing left until you reach Commonside. Cross over and, after a short climb up the hill, you’re following a footpath on the edge of more woodland. You’ll take a newly created diversion round Austerson Old Hall and arrive at a single-track road (Yarrangall Green), turn left and then turn left again when you get to the main Manley Road. Follow this busy-ish road uphill for 250 yards and then turn right down a track to Claim Farm. Once you reach the dog-leg bend to the right, take a 90-degree left turn, go through the gate and head along the side of field. Once you’ve crossed a track/gallops, bear right slightly and follow the overgrown path round the left-hand side of this field uphill towards a house in the distance. Once you’ve reached the road, cross and head up Bushells Lane until you reach a staggered crossroads; turn left up Waterloo Lane. At the end of Waterloo Lane, take a right turn. At the back end of a slight right-hand bend, you’ll need to take a track on the left and head up towards the ridge. Once you reach the next crossroads, take a left and follow the track past a covered reservoir until you reach Manley Road. Turn right and look for a gate built into the hedge approximately 250 yards on the left-hand side. Take the path which cuts diagonally through a field
until you reach the driveway to Higher Mickledale Farm. Go straight across the driveway to another path and follow in same direction all the way to Simons Lane. Turn left and walk uphill; you’ll see the car park from where you started the walk on the right-hand side. Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear whilst walking. Whilst every care has been taken to ensure that the walk is accurate, neither the publisher or its editorial contributors can accept, and hereby disclaim, any liability to any party to loss or damage caused by errors or omissions resulting from negligence, accident or other cause.

Comfortably These are the best seven-seaters on sale today Need plenty of space, both for luggage and occupants too? You’ll want a seven-seater then. Fortunately there are plenty of options currently on the market, offering a choice of body styles from a variety of brands. But which are best? That’s what we’ve been investigating – and here are the results. Land Rover Discovery This list was always destined to feature Land Rover’s go-anywhere Discovery. As well as seven comfortable seats, it’s packed with off-road technology to make it just as capable at scaling steep inclines as it is making the weekly run to the shops. Expensive it may be, but the Discovery comes loaded with equipment and is available with a range of engine choices, too. Volvo XC90 When the firstgeneration XC90 was released, it stormed the market thanks to its rock-solid build quality and efficiency. The latest edition continues the legacy, albeit with a whole lot more technology and equipment. It’s also one of the safest cars on the market thanks to a raft of assistance systems. For families, there are few better options than the XC90.
Seat Alhambra If you’re after the best possible passenger space, then look no further than the Seat Alhambra. It may be a little outdated inside, but the Alhambra makes up for it with a huge amount of interior room. It’s also surprisingly good to drive, and frugal, too. As the Alhambra has been around for a little while now, you’re likely to find good deals at the forecourt – bolstering its appeal. Skoda Kodiaq Skoda hit the nail on the seven-seater head when it released the Kodiaq. Rock-solid build quality and incredible value for money meant that this Czech SUV enjoyed immediate popularity and has continued to do so. It’s available with a range of efficient engines too, while a new performance-orientated model – the Kodiaq vRS – means there’s something for those with the need for speed as well. Audi Q7 Audi’s big Q7 flies the flag for premium manufacturers here, offering that top-notch
89 driving experience you’d expect from a car with four rings on the front. A high-quality interior and silkysmooth petrol and diesel engines seal the deal. There’s the all-conquering SQ7 available too – which puts many ‘normal’ performance cars to shame. Tesla Model X Representing the electric contingent is Tesla’s Model X. Spaceship-like in design, it’s a real looker out on the road but, fortunately for this list, it’s available with seven seats. A realistic 300-mile all-electric range means it’s usable for long-distance drivers, too. Though it may be expensive to buy outright, the Model X justifies its high price tag with minimal running costs and plenty of performance. Mercedes GLS The Mercedes GLS takes the fight to the Audi Q7, and having recently been updated, packs
more technology and features than ever before. A longer wheelbase than the car it replaces means there’s more space than before, and improved legroom for all occupants. The interior of the car has been vastly overhauled, with a full widescreen infotainment system helping to give the cabin a particularly high-tech feel. Ford S-Max Though Ford’s S-Max has been around a little while now, it’s still one of the best-driving sevenseaters around, and offers genuine practicality as well. A range of frugal engines help to keep trips to the pump to a minimum, while solid build quality should mean it holds up to family duties too. A range-topping Vignale is now available, though even lower trims get a vast amount of standard equipment.

Pots your
91
style?
by Angie Barker
Award Winner
People often underestimate the impact that pots can have on your outside space. Whether your garden is big or small, or even a balcony, then pots can really enhance the look of it by introducing colour and style, in terms of the pots you choose and the planting. There are a few things to remember though with container gardening. First of all think big. Two or three large pots look so much better than a large collection of small ones – and they will need less watering. Then choose your style. If your garden is more of a cottage garden with lots of perennial planting in an informal style, then terracotta is the obvious choice. If however you have a contemporary, sleek garden perhaps with decking, then stainless steel or black ceramic would fit in perfectly. You also have to bear in mind that plants in containers rely on you for their water. Don’t be fooled into thinking that the rain will keep them watered. In summer especially you will need a watering regime to stop the plants drying out. Adding water retentive gel to your compost can really help preserve water content. Hubby’s favourite is an Acer palmatum ‘Butterfly’ we have growing in a pot by our conservatory door. Acers of all descriptions do well in pots because
Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.
they are slow growing. Just site them somewhere protected from harsh winds in part shade and they should do well. It is especially lovely to have a pot or two by your front door to cheer you up when you come home – even more so in winter when there is little happening in garden borders. Sarcoccoca confusa is a small evergreen shrub which will thrive in a shady spot and has the most wonderful scent during late winter to welcome you home. My latest project this summer was to grow a Silver Birch tree in a pot! My plan is that by keeping it in a pot it will stay relatively small but enables me to site it close to the house where I can appreciate its lovely bark and fine foliage. Yes, when it comes to pots all you need is your imagination.
