Have Your Say

Neighbourhood Plan

Wigan Council is asking residents to have their say on the town’s future.

The Standish Neighbourhood Plan is out for statutory consultation until Wednesday, December 19.

The Big Listening Project encourages people to get involved in the planning of Wigan until 2030, and will be touring the area with a green sofa on the following dates to encourage people to think local. Monday, November 26 – Shevington shops Tuesday, November 27 – Pemberton High Street Wednesday, November 28 – Winstanley shops Thursday, November 29 – Atherton Startwell Centre Friday, November 30 – Wigan & Leigh College Monday, December 3 – Carers Centre, Hindley Tuesday, December 4 – Higher Fold shops If you can’t make it along in person, you can still have your say – head to www.wigan.gov.uk/ BigListeningProjectSurvey to give your thoughts online.

A final draft of the plan, which aims to see a strategy for development in Standish implemented with influences from the local community, was submitted to Wigan Council by Standish Voice in November. It encompasses Standish and Standish with Langtree, as well as parts of the wards of Aspull, New Springs, Whelley and Shevington with Lower Ground. The plan wants to influence the amount of new housing coming to the village, protect its green spaces and historic pubs, improve the village centre for residents and visitors alike, and reduce traffic congestion on Standish roads. To have your say on the new Standish Neighbourhood Plan, see the Planning section of the Wigan Council website.

Happy Hampers

Market Volunteers

The Brick is looking for donations towards its Christmas Hamper Appeal.

Standish Christmas Market is still looking for volunteers to get involved in the festivities.

The appeal aims to distribute hampers to families across Wigan who don’t have a lot at Christmas time. Food and gift donations are especially welcome.

The market is expected to attract around 5000 visitors, and need plenty of people to help out and ensure the day runs smoothly. If you can commit at least two hours, they want to hear from you!

Festive food donations can include everything from Christmas cake to carrots and gravy granules, while (new) gifts for all ages are requested to fill hampers. You can also donate decorations to the hamper appeal, including crackers, wrapping paper and tree decor. These should be dropped off at Wigan Athletic Community Trust Hub on Montrose Avenue between 9:30am and 5pm, every day from Monday, December 17 to Friday, December 21.

Volunteers work on all aspects of the market, beginning at 5am on Saturday, December 1 and running until 9pm, but people are also needed for jobs on Friday night and Sunday morning. For more information about volunteering, email standishvoicevolunteers@gmail.com.

Wrestling

Rockstar

A Standish teenager is celebrating martial arts victory. Standish-based Joe Seddon, 13, first started wrestling when he was just five years old – an attempt by his parents to instil discipline and determination in him from a young age. What began as amateur wrestling at Wigan & Leigh Wrestling Club at Rose Bridge High School soon evolved into the duo finding a more permanent home for their gym at Eckersley Mill. Joe also got involved with Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), along with boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and now trains at Reps MMA in Preston and The City of Manchester Wrestling Club in Salford. ‘Joe really enjoyed the martial arts. I wanted to start him early on it so he didn’t miss out on training, with the view that if he didn’t enjoy it he could stop, and wouldn’t lose anything,’ Lee continued. Now Joe is a four-times national wrestling champion, undefeated in his age range in MMA, the world’s runner-up in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the ABA Northwest boxing champion. He’s taken part in competitions across the world, including Latvia, Germany and America, with the ultimate aim of fighting in the UFC. ‘I want to compete for Great Britain in the Commonwealth Games and eventually fight in the UFC,’ Joe said. ‘I love it when I get in the cage or on the mat and everyone around me supports me. Fighting makes me really happy, and keeps me focussed.’

Joe competed in the British Juniors Championships in Peterborough in the 12-14 age category ahead of the Aspull Warriors Open Competition in his hometown in late November. Now Lee is in search of local sponsors for Joe’s wrestling and MMA career, which will help him reach the next level in his personal development. ‘We’ve recently secured a major clothing sponsorship, a protein supplement sponsor in Powerbeck in Leigh, and funding from local sponsor Stephen Pratt, who runs Waderose Roofing in Standish and has promised to fund Joe’s international fights,’ Lee said. ‘We’re still on the lookout for more local sponsors who can help with essential costs.’ The future certainly looks bright for Joe, who is keeping fighting fit ahead of the Aspull Open.

Appley Bridge in Print A book dedicated to Appley Bridge’s history is available for purchase. The book, written by Barbara Dix and Stephen Smith, was the result of a teenage pact fifty years ago to record the village’s history, and aims to answer long-asked questions about Appley Bridge while collecting photographs, maps and text. If you want to know where the name Appley came from, or find out more about the men on the war memorial, email appleybridgebook@gmail.com or call Freda on 01257 255856.

Ciao Chadwick’s! Long-standing fine food emporium Chadwick’s in Standish is set to be replaced by a retirement village. Plans for 31 retirement living apartments and 61 retirement living PLUS units to be erected on the site have been drawn up, along with on-site car parking and landscaping. Retirement accommodation firm McCarthy and Stone are in charge of the proposals, which will be open to community feedback ahead of submission to Wigan Council. The family-run butcher’s has been in Standish since 1761, and an integral part of the local community. Chadwick’s as it is known today was originally set up by Noel Chadwick, going from a small butcher’s shop to a market stall to the building and restaurant it is today. McCarthy and Stone Divisional Managing Director Ian Wilkins said: ‘We are looking forward to discussing the proposals further with both local residents and representatives of the community. Where possible, feedback received will be incorporated into the final designs of the proposal.’ A new retirement village would provide older people with support and care while retaining their independence, with full activity schedules offered throughout the week from live music evenings to trips out. It will feature an on-site restaurant and a laundry room, along with communal facilities and lift access to all floors.

WW1 Exhibition

Bus Blunder

Pupils from Appley Bridge All Saints Primary School have been getting involved with a First World War exhibition.

Wigan residents are up in arms after the cancellation announcement of a local bus service.

176 pupils aged 4-11 dedicated two weeks to researching WW1 and compiling a display of Remembrance artwork, documents and photographs, which was open to the local community to come and view in November, to celebrate the centenary of the Armistice.

The 113 Stagecoach service follows a route from Wigan to Preston, through Standish, Wrightington, Heskin, Eccleston, Croston, Ulnes Walton, Leyland, Lostock Hall, Bamber Bridge and Walton-le-Dale. Stagecoach dubbed the route ‘unviable’, but local villagers say that for some, it is the only way of getting around. Eccleston resident Margaret Butler said the suspension of service is particularly affecting older people in the area: ‘We are being forced to drive to places and that can be difficult for old people. We’re given a free bus pass but it’s useless if there are no buses!’ Pat Pilkington, who lives in Heskin, added: ‘Stagecoach are effectively cutting off Heskin from any sort of public transport. The retired and elderly rely on this bus, and no thought has gone into how this affects the villages.’ A Change.org petition has been started by local residents to protest the cancellation of the 113 service, which is scheduled to stop operation on Monday, January 7.

Top Christmas Toys of 2018 In these days of iPads and online gaming, do kids still play with toys? Yes - of course they do! Toys are always bucking the trend and incorporating new technology; here are six of the best. LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Express (around £75)

Fingerlings Untamed Dinos (under £20) Fingerlings are popular robotic friends which cling to your child’s finger and respond to motion and sound. This year is all about the dinosaurs. There are several different Raptors, along with a T-Rex. LOL Surprises (anywhere from £5.99-£179.99) Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of LOL Surprises. The packages have different layers to unwrap, with a collectable doll in the centre and her accessories on the outside. Monopoly Cheaters Edition (£20-£25)

The Harry Potter books remain perennially popular, and LEGO is always a hit so combine the two and you have a winning Christmas gift. The Hogwarts Express is definitely a good investment, with a nice solid train, five mini-figures, and Dementors.

Monopoly is notorious for festive arguments – why not give everyone a reason to yell with the Cheaters Edition? It encourages players to fake a dice roll, steal money and even skip rent. Okay, so maybe it’s not in the spirit of Christmas, but it sounds more fun than normal Monopoly! Chow Crown (£24.99)

Looking for a gift with a difference?

This is a game like no other – plop a crown on your head with dangling forks attached, and race against time to eat all the snacks. Choose whatever nibbles you like to stick on the forks and go wild! Scruff-A-Luvs (£19.99)

Appley Bridge Remembers A WW1 Tearoom in Appley Bridge has helped raise money for the Royal British Legion. The Remembrance bunfight, which took place on Sunday, November 4, commemorated the fifteen heroes from Appley Bridge who lost their lives in the First World War. Featuring period music and singalong songs, along with traditional WW1 food and cakes, the event was an apt tribute to every soldier who went off to fight in the Great War. Poetry readings and prayers on behalf of Appley Bridge Churches Together got the proceedings underway, with representatives from All Saints Church and St. Joseph’s. Armed Forces veterans and local residents alike were in attendance, enjoying a community atmosphere in a time of remembrance, with plenty of opportunity to reflect upon local and national heritage. In that vein, a cabinet full of World War I artefacts was on display for attendees to peruse, along with documents on the life stories of the fallen Appley Bridge soldiers. A chaplaincy table allowed visitors

to learn about life in wartime Belgium, with copies of prayer books and gospel volumes that would have been carried into the trenches. ‘There But Not There’ silhouettes also populated the room, seated at tables in between tearoom visitors. These transparent figures represent the names on local war memorials, and signify the absence of those who lost their lives, while raising money for various charities including Help For Heroes, Walking With The Wounded, and The Royal Foundation. Attendees could also look through the locallyproduced book ‘Appley Bridge Remembers’: a collaborative research effort between Stephen Smith, Barbara Dix and Anne Fletcher which contains the stories of local casualties who are commemorated on the war memorial. The event raised £300 in total for the Royal British Legion, and above all provided a fitting farewell to the brave Appley Bridge men who sacrificed everything for their country.

New Premises for

Panthers

A Standish football club is celebrating moving into its new home. The Standish Panthers Junior Football Club is an entirely volunteer-run group which provides 15 football teams to 180 children in the Standish area, from U8s to U16s. Established in 2003, the club had been actively seeking new football pitches and a clubhouse for six years before it found new headquarters at Wigan Sports Club in Parson’s Walk in September. Standish Panthers JFC decided the new clubhouse and training ground was necessary after its considerable expansion over the years, meaning

training and football matches had to be spread across various sites in the borough, including Standish Community High School and Wigan Youth Zone. Home to Standish Cricket Club, as well as local hockey and squash clubs, the WSC boasts a new all-weather synthetic surface for training sessions, a new drainage system, and a function room and bar. Children also now have the opportunity to try their hand at four different sports if they wish, all housed under one roof, providing a much more social, community-focused atmosphere for the club. Standish Panthers celebrated their move with a huge

25

26 launch day on September 30, during which parents and children were invited down to the WSC to sample a range of the sports offered, including squash, hockey and cricket, with entertainment from the Wigan Ukulele Club. Representatives from Wigan Youth Zone were also in attendance, hosting additional activities such as table tennis, face painting and inflatable darts. Tony Barnes, Chairman of Standish Panthers, said: ‘It’s an exciting time for our Club as we aim to take it to a new level, on and off the field. I would like to thank everybody who has been involved with our move to Wigan Sports Club, including the committee, the coaches, parents/guardians and the

players for their patience’. The club is a not-for-profit organisation, and membership fees are just £20 per month including all equipment, referee match fees, registration and Christmas parties. To find out more about the club, head to http://www.standishpanthers.co.uk

Art Exhibition

Shevington WI

There’s still time to catch Shevington Library’s November exhibition.

The Shevington Women’s Institute welcomes new members.

Until Friday, November 30, artist Catherine Aubrey, along with poet Bill Lythgoe will have their work displayed in the exhibition, which is housed in the Village Art Gallery at Shevington Library.

Shevington WI aims to inspire women, providing new opportunities, the chance to learn new skills and meet new friends.

Catherine Aubrey is a local artist living in Appley Bridge, who creates folk art using gouache, exploring interesting characters and animals through folk tradition. Meanwhile, Shevington resident Bill Lythgoe’s award-winning poetry experiments with deeper meaning and relatable characters. For opening times, see the library website.

At the same time, you’ll be making a difference to the community and the world at large. Bring your existing skills to pass on to others, enjoy visits and trips to the theatre, restaurants or local groups, and much more. The WI meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Shevington Methodist Church Hall on Gathurst Lane at 7:30pm. Call Mavis for more information on 01257 472662.

It’s

Behind You!

Oh no it isn’t! Don’t panic, but pantomime season is actually right ahead of us. As December comes upon us in all its blustery glory, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush to get everything in place for the big day. But while Christmas can be stressful, it should also be about enjoying the festivities with loved ones, and an annual theatre visit can be the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Manchester’s panto is set to be a huge one this year – the production of Cinderella at Opera House Manchester boasts an all-star cast including Coronation Street’s Connor McIntyre, along with Gareth Gates and Les Dennis. The rags to riches love story has a great orchestra, stunning scenery and special effects galore – it runs from Saturday, December 8 until Sunday, December 30. Ticket prices range from £12 to around £50.

Pantomimes may be mainly aimed at children – but that doesn’t mean they aren’t great fun for all ages. There are some great shows coming up in Wigan this December – make sure to get your hands on tickets early before they sell out!

Why We Hang

Stockings and other weird Christmas traditions Christmas is all about traditions, but why do we hang stockings, eat chocolate logs and drink eggnog (why would anyone drink eggnog?!) Stockings – Hanging stockings probably derives from a tradition of leaving out hay-filled shoes on December 5, the eve of St. Nicholas’ feast day. Children would wake to discover that the hay they left for St. Nick’s donkey had been replaced with treats or coins.

Snacks for Santa – In ancient Norse mythology, Odin had an eight-legged horse named Sleipnir. Kids would leave treats for Sleipnir, hoping that Odin would favour them with gifts in return. Evergreen decorations – Before Christianity people decorated their homes with evergreens in the winter as a reminder that spring would return. The practice really took off when the public learned that Queen Victoria had a decorated Christmas tree as a nod to her German husband’s heritage. The Yule Log – Yule logs also predate Christianity. As part of winter solstice celebrations, Gaels and Celts burned logs decorated with holly, ivy, and pinecones to cleanse themselves of the past year and welcome the next one. This eventually evolved into the edible logs we see today. Eggnog – Historians agree that ‘nog’ was probably inspired by a medieval drink called ‘posset’, a milky

FREE PICKUP & DELIVERY

33 drink made with eggs, milk, and sometimes figs or sherry. These were all pricey ingredients, so it was a bit of status symbol to offer it to guests. Its etymology perhaps comes from ‘noggin’ which was slang for a wooden cup. Mistletoe - This was associated with fertility and vitality by Celtic Druids because it blossomed even during the most frigid winters. Kissing under it began in the 18th Century and started with guests kissing the hand of their host under the mistletoe. Advent calendars - The modern advent calendar, with its little doors containing sweets or small gifts began with Gerhard Lang in the early 1900s. His inspiration was a calendar that his mother made for him when he was a child, featuring 24 coloured pictures attached to a piece of cardboard.

Sprint For Santa Wigan’s Santa Dash returns for its sixth year this December. The 5K run takes place on Sunday, December 9, and will see hundreds of suited Santas running, jogging or ambling their way around Mesnes Park in aid of Three Wishes, the official hospital charity for Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh. Entry is £20 for adults, £15 for children aged 16 and under, or £8 for under-10s, and includes a Santa outfit, a turkey sandwich, mince pie and mulled wine for all finishers. The run will be accompanied by plenty of festive songs to get you in the mood! The route kicks off at the Sir Francis Sharp Powell statue in Mesnes Park at 11am.

Appley Armistice Members of the local Rainbows, Brownies and Guides brigades joined the Remembrance Sunday parade in Appley Bridge. The Remembrance parade aimed to commemorate the fifteen lives lost in the village in the First World War, heading from Appley Bridge Village Hall down to the war memorial. The parade was led by Reverends Sue Timmins and John Hilton from the Vale Methodist Church. The Appley Bridge community joined in the parade to pay their respects to the fallen, following the village’s uniformed organisations on November 11. The 2nd Appley Bridge Rainbow Unit, which was involved in the parade, still has spaces available for new members. The group allows girls aged

5-7 to learn new skills, get involved with the local community, and meet new friends, meeting every Tuesday from 4:40pm-5:40pm. Meetings take place in the school hall at All Saints in Appley Bridge. To book a place, or for more information, contact Rainbow Leader Lou Morley on 07855 652835 or email lou.morley76@gmail.com. 3-4 year olds are also welcome to be added to the waiting list.

Food & Drink

Christmas Cheeseboard A cheeseboard can be the perfect savoury dessert to accompany a festive meal - but unless you’re buying a pre-packaged selection, it can be difficult to choose your cheeses. Here’s some advice. How much cheese? - Allow about 100g-125g (3½4oz) cheese per person if your cheeseboard is being served after a meal, or slightly more - 150g (5oz) per person if you’re serving it as a snack/light meal. Which cheese? - Three or four cheeses is enough – more than that and there’s too much for the palate to enjoy. The cheeses should be different styles, textures and flavours. Cheddar, Stilton and Brie is a classic combination, as it mixes a hard, soft and a blue. Go totally British with a traditional West Country Farmhouse Cheddar matched with Cropwell Bishop, a wonderful robust blue, and maybe Bath Soft Cheese, which is gorgeously gooey and

mushroomy in flavour. It’s nice to put one wild-card cheese on the board like a citrussy goat’s cheese or meaty smoked cheese like St James. Crackers - A good oat biscuit, cracker or artisan bread will complement the cheese. Add a chutney - look for unusual brands at farmers’ markets, and some apples or grapes. Drinks - After a meal a sweet fortified white wine is always good. You could even try a whiskey, or a gin and tonic. If the board is going to serve as a light meal, then beer or cider is a good choice. Storage - Store in a cold room or the bottom of the fridge, wrapped in waxed paper if possible to allow the cheese to breathe. Let the cheese to come up to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for maximum flavour. By Tom Hancock

Vodka, double shot

Clementine

½ lemon, juice only

150ml/5fl oz tomato juice Pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper

4tbsp dark brown sugar ½ tsp ground ginger

Place the ice into a tall glass and add the vodka.

Place the red wine, water, brandy, orange juice and sugar in a large pan; add the spice bag, and clovestudded Clementine.

Brick

Calendar HullJady Chartered Accountants have launched a 2019 calendar to raise funds for The Brick’s new appeal to raise funds to put down the deposit on their premises at The Brick Works in Hodson Street, Wigan.

a little different to try and raise funds for the appeal and decided to produce a calendar for sale, based on the theme of “Welcome to Wigan” which celebrates some of the unexpected, the quirky and lovely things about Wigan.

The Brick works with all sorts of people who might be struggling with homelessness, poverty or debt and the Brick Works building is where so much of the Charity’s work happens to give training opportunities to help people into employment. There is a workshop which turns unwanted goods into restored furniture for families in need, a woodwork section, where you can buy products made by people learning a wealth of carpentry skills and a cycle workshop, where you can buy low cost, affordable bikes. There is also a fantastic, cosy café, open to the public. The landlord is giving the Charity the opportunity to buy the premises, which will give the charity more stability. When we talked about what we could pledge to raise funds for The Brick, we were thrilled that some of our staff were so enthusiastic that they offered to be in the calendar, despite it being freezing cold on the day of their photoshoot! We’ve also been able to feature photos of Wigan’s Really Awful Orchestra and Aspull Worm Charming, as well as other things uniquely Wigan.” Copies of the calendar, which is wall-hung and A4 sized, can be purchased for £7.50, with discounts if you want to order more than one copy. Deck the

Stalls

Jess Phillips gets the scoop on the best Northern Christmas markets.

The Christmas period is notorious for the vast array of toys and gifts lurking on supermarket shelves, just begging us to be taken home and put under the tree. Things might have evolved from dolls and teddy bears into games consoles and iPads, but the hustle and bustle of shops at Christmas time can be overwhelming. What do you choose? Will the kids really like what you’ve picked? Should Uncle Terry really be drinking those miniatures?

Manchester

Christmas markets offer a great alternative to the masses swarming the tills in December. Set against snowy backdrops with beautiful cathedrals and cobbled streets, markets might get busy, but they also afford plenty of opportunities to purchase bespoke gifts for loved ones, treat yourself to a festive tipple, and escape the madness of the high street. Best of all? There are loads happening right on your doorstep.

Cathedral Gardens is launching its inaugural Ice Village, with an ice-skating rink, ice sculpture exhibition and Santa’s Grotto. Tickle your tastebuds with a famous bratwurst or try a German beer at one of the many bars spread across MCR this Christmas.

Manchester’s traditional German market is back this year and better than ever. Running until Saturday, December 22, the city centre will be teeming with stalls galore, from Cathedral Gardens down to Albert Square. Whether you fancy picking up some new winter woollies or handmade crafts, Manchester’s market has so much more to offer than just retail therapy.

Manchester Christmas Market

If braving the cold weather still doesn’t sound appealing enough, not to worry. Manchester’s Event City by the Trafford Centre boasts a massive magical Christmas from Friday, December 7 to

46 Tuesday, January 1. Winter Funland is full to the brim with rides and attractions for all ages

A pop-up Christmas cinema is also heading to the city this December. Catch festive classics from Love Actually to Gremlins, with live music and dance accompaniments. Get comfy in a beanbag with lots of blankets for a singalong special of The Greatest Showman from Saturday, November 24 to Friday, December 14 at Mayfair railway arch in Manchester. York Known for its medieval Shambles and cobbled streets, York is the perfect destination to get away from the chaos this Christmas. Up until Sunday, December 23, the city will be aglow with its annual St. Nicholas Fair, transforming it once again into a historic winter wonderland. Fairy lights and handmade decorations adorn the traditional chalets strewn about the city centre, with the return of the Ice Factor skating rink and lots of pantomime cheer. A new Yorkshire Barn launches in 2018, with county-themed festive culinary delights – just follow the scent of mulled wine! Liverpool The Plateau at St. George’s Hall once again plays host to Liverpool’s Christmas outdoor market this year. Running until Sunday, December 23 between

11am-9pm each day (11am-5pm on Sundays), more than 40 stalls offer great Christmas bites, bespoke arts and crafts, and gorgeous gifts for all the family. New for 2018 is the Windmill Bar, serving mulled wine and traditional beers. Liverpool’s Ice Festival returns to the city in conjunction with the market until January 6. With an exhilarating ice slide, skating rink, shopping chalets and a brand new Ferris Wheel for 2018, the Pier Head will be bursting with freezing fun.

Standish Saturday, December 1, 11am-8pm Now in its third year, Standish’s volunteer-run Christmas market is an event to bring the whole community together. Against the backdrop of St. Wilfrid’s Church, Wigan’s only Grade-I listed building, the market offers performances from local schools and other Standish talent, along with tonnes of craft and gift stalls. A Santa’s grotto will be set up in the library, with a Christmas Trail for kids around local businesses.

47 Alongside masses of stalls packed with festive cheer, a storyteller performance of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens’ great great grandson Gerald will open in the Concert Room of St. George’s Hall, on the same stage where Dickens gave his Penny Readings. Visitors also have the opportunity to see Liverpool’s world-famous grotto, which was originally housed in Lewis’ department store before it closed, will be displayed in St. John’s shopping centre this year with its original fittings. Chester

Heaving with festive flair from local and regional businesses, there’s no better place to grab the perfect stocking filler than the 70+ stalls lining the city streets. With a glittering Christmas tree to top it all off, enjoy hot chocolate or mulled wine while taking a leisurely stroll around the market. Until December 23rd, head to Chester Zoo to see its famous lanterns festival, with nine stunning spaces to discover. Illuminated lanterns depicting the zoo’s animals and wildlife light the way around a winter wonderland, and keep an eye out for Father Christmas and his reindeer! A Christmas food market is also available to pick up a hog roast sandwich or traditional bratwurst. Grassington Deep in the Yorkshire Dales, the town of Grassington

is the ideal location for a Victorian yuletide. Its Dickensian Festival, which transports the town back to the nineteenth century across various dates in December, feels just like something out of a novel. Featuring a packed events calendar with music, magic and comedy entertainment, the whole town gets involved with traditional Punch & Judy shows, carol singing and Victorian characters galore – you wouldn’t be surprised to see Ebenezer Scrooge rounding the corner. Don’t worry – there are also plenty of stalls and crafts for finding that perfect present on the 1st, 2nd, 8th and 9th of December.

48 Lincoln Against the backdrop of a cathedral that dates back to 1072 A.D., Lincoln’s Christmas market runs across a single weekend – and although it might be a bit further afield, it’s certainly not to be missed. From Thursday, December 6 to Sunday, December 9, the historic city comes alive with holiday cheer. The main section of the market is nestled between Lincoln’s Norman castle and incredible Gothic cathedral, inviting visitors to soak up the area’s rich architectural delights while sampling festive foods or browsing for gifts. It branches through the cobbled cultural quarter and up to the medieval square, with a park and ride system available to carry guests between the city itself and up the hill to the main market. Late opening times mean there’s no rush to find that perfect present - on Friday and Saturday the market runs from 10am-9:30pm, so you have all day (and most of the night!) to shop. Sheffield All the way up until Christmas Eve you can soak up Sheffield’s very own winter wonderland. The market offers 50 cabins covering the city from Fargate to Peace Gardens, with seasonal food and drink, decorations and plenty of pressies. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to meet Santa in his grotto, and head over to the German sausage grill for a tasty treat afterwards. The market is open Sunday-Wednesday from 10am6pm, then from 10am-8pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Lymm Saturday, December 8, 11am-5pm The village of Lymm might just be the perfect setting for a Victorian yuletide – that’s why its Dickensian Christmas Festival is perfect for revelling in the festive spirit. With stalls, entertainers, music and a flotilla (weather-permitting), capture the magic of A Christmas Carol in Lymm this year.

Wigan Galleries Friday, December 7 & Saturday, December 8, 9am5pm Head to The Galleries in Wigan for a magical Christmas shopping event with walk-through trees, the chance to meet Santa, and plenty of festive food and drink. Children’s activities including sand art and bubbles are also available to keep the kids entertained!

Lancaster Christmas at the Castle offers a Christmas market in a setting like no other. 40 stalls will deck the courtyard of Lancaster Castle, offering local and regional artisan goods and produce from jewellery to candles to photography. A stage will also be set up with Victorian carol singers, brass bands and bell-ringers – perfect for getting into the Christmas spirit. A ‘Step into the Story’ event allows kids to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus as they trail through a magical wonderland through the castle. The market is open on Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16, from 10:30am-5pm. Haworth The historic Bronte village will be illuminated with a traditional torchlight weekend this December. On Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9 torchlight processions head down Haworth’s picturesque Main Street with festive bands and carol singing as dusk falls. On the Saturday, a Candlemass Eve guided walk also takes place, followed by carol singing around the tree. The following weekend sees a brass band festival lighting up Haworth, with plenty of opportunities to pick up a Christmas gift at one of the local shops along the way. Finally, on Saturday, December 22 and Sunday, December 23, experience the magical re-enactment of the Nativity scene. Standish Market Returns Standish Christmas Market returns for its third year this December. Set in the village centre with St. Wilfrid’s Church - Wigan’s only Grade-I listed building – as a backdrop, stalls will crisscross the Market Place and the length of Cross Street. Whether you’re looking to pick up a Christmas gift before the 25th or just looking to treat yourself, Standish’s local traders have something to offer. Standish Library will also be taking part in the festivities – manned by volunteers, the library will transform into a sparkly Santa’s Grotto with plenty of activities for children. Craft fairs will take over the church halls of Standish Methodist and St. Wilfrid’s, and a Christmas Trail will wind around local businesses and shops to bring the whole village into the Christmas spirit. To top it all off, performances by local school choirs and talented local stars take place in a marquee on the Parish Hall car park. Standish Voice, responsible for organising the market along with the Standish Christmas Market Committee, came up with the idea for the event’s original incarnation. ‘In 2016 the people of Standish had noticed that the village was missing something,’ explained Ian Trafford of Standish Voice. ‘When asked, some pointed towards the decline of large community events in the village, meaning local residents felt a little detached from each other. Others indicated that the influx of new arrivals in the village had

diluted the community spirit that has for years been synonymous with life in Standish. So they did what northern folk do – they had the biggest party the village had ever seen.’ The market has three main goals: to rejuvenate and cultivate Standish’s community spirit in the face of its rapid expansion; to raise the profile of local businesses to provide a legitimate alternative to towns such as Wigan and Chorley; and to hold a day of free family fun. Jaime Jones, Events Lead for Standish Voice and head of the Standish Christmas Market Committee, said: ‘We wanted to bring our own identity to the market instead of just emulating the Manchester and Liverpool markets. We focused on keeping it local; from the music to the beer to the food stalls. By doing that, we feel that we created an opportunity for the community to come together and meet up with old friends, make some new ones and enjoy the Christmas spirit.’ You can keep up to date with Standish Christmas Market developments on their social media channels at StandishXMarket.

Prosper expands

again

After a short time away from Standish whilst the build and fit of their renovated building was being concluded, David Barton and the Prosper Wealth Management team are now back on the High Street in stunning new premises, with new staff and industry leading technology. Since launching Prosper fifteen years ago back in 2003, David has seen the business grow at a very impressive rate. The company is managing over £150 million worth of pension funds, mainly for Wigan customers, and they are attracting new funds at a rate of £2million per month. It’s no wonder that significant investment into new premises and highly qualified staff was an absolute must. With a current team of ten professionals, and with further new talent in the wings, this is a very exciting time for the Prosper Wealth Management team. Most of the team have left large impersonal organisations to join Prosper Wealth Management to do what they love, which is to personally help clients.

The advisory and research team have amassed over 150 years’ experience between them operating within the wealth management sector and during this time they have helped many hundreds of clients enjoy a prosperous, worryfree retirement. The team at Prosper Wealth Management holds very high level financial planning qualifications and were proud to be awarded the coveted ‘Chartered Status’ in 2012 - the gold standard within the Financial Services industry. They were the first Wigan firm to achieve this industry accolade back in in 2012 and, as of October 2018, remain the only Wigan firm to do so.

57 The company employ Fellows as well as Chartered members of the Personal Finance Society and believe that the education and development of their people is essential if they are to retain their Chartered status. With a new website about to be launched with the latest industry news and comment they are keen to promote their professional services and welcome new clients into the business. David comments ‘new clients are delighted to engage with highly qualified wealth management professionals locally rather than having to travel into Manchester or Liverpool which was always historically the case ‘. So what does a typical customer of Prosper Wealth Management look like? “What typifies our clients are that they have had a successful working life and see retirement as the beginning of a new and rewarding venture into travel, hobbies and quality time with family”, says David. David continues “Ordinarily, they will have accumulated investable assets (cash, pensions or investments) of at least £200,000 - £250,000 which

they would like to invest and they appreciate that financial decisions they are taking now are absolutely critical to sustaining their desired lifestyle throughout retirement”.

Helped many hundreds of clients enjoy a prosperous, worry-free retirement “The highlight over the last 15 years we have been providing life time financial planning for clients and we’ve discovered during this time that we relish working with individuals like this because our shared values have formed the bedrock of a trusting, successful and, most of all, enjoyable long term relationships” says David. “We can really make a positive difference to our customers’ lives”. Should you wish to have a meeting with one of David’s team just give them a call on 01257 423800 or, better still, pop in to their new offices in Standish.

What if a Hard Brexit

Happens? by Alan Batt

I have been asked a number of times recently what a hard Brexit would mean to the Wigan property market and it’s obviously a topic that buy to let landlords and Wigan homeowners are interested in, so I am going to try and give you what I consider a fair and unbiased piece on what would happen if a hard Brexit takes place in March 2019. The Governor of the Bank of England suggested recently that a disorderly hard Brexit would affect house prices by up to 35%, but before we all start panicking, let’s ask ourselves, what exactly has happened in the last couple of years since the Brexit vote? Worries that the result of the Brexit referendum in 2016 would lead to a fast crash in Wigan (and national) property values were unfounded, although the growth of property values in Wigan has reduced since the referendum. However, Wigan house prices have actually risen by 6.25% since the EU referendum.

Alan Batt Alan Batt is a member of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and has worked within the Wigan property market for over 30 years.

And in 2018, the number of property transactions in the Wigan Council area (i.e. the number of people selling their home) is on track to finish on 5,475. That’s less than 2017, but still higher than the long term 12 year annual average of 4,240 transactions. So, it appears the result of the referendum hasn’t caused many major issues so far. However, if there was a major economic jolt, that could be a different game. The property market is mostly influenced by interest rates and salaries, so a hard Brexit would subdue wage growth to some degree, yet the level of the change will depend on the undetermined type of Brexit deal (or no deal). If trade barriers are imposed on a hard Brexit, imports will become more expensive, inflation will rise and growth will fall, although this could be tempered by the exchange rate of the Pound against the Euro. In plain language, a hard Brexit will be worse for house prices than a deal. The last major economic jolt was only nine years ago with the global financial crisis. Nationally, in most locations including Wigan, property values dropped in value by 16% to 19% over an 18-month period. If we experienced a similar percentage drop, it would only take us back to the property value levels we were achieving in 2015. So, what next? A lot of Wigan homeowners might wait until after March 2019 to move, meaning less choice for buyers, especially in the desirable areas of Wigan. For Wigan landlords, Wigan tenants

59 are also likely to hang off moving until next year, although I suspect there could be some Wigan buyto-let bargains to be had from people having to move (Brexit or No Brexit) or the usual panic selling at times of uncertainty. Brexit, no Brexit, hard Brexit - in the whole scheme of things, it will be another footnote to history, just like the oil crisis and 20%+ inflation in the 1970’s, mass unemployment in the 1980s, interest rates of 15% in 1990’s and the global financial crash in 2009. People still need houses and a roof over their head. If property values drop, it is only a paper drop in

value - because you only lose if you actually sell. Long term, we aren’t building enough homes, and so, as I always say, property is a long game no matter what happens - the property market will always come good. Growth in UK property values as well as in Wigan seems fated to slow over the next five to ten years, whatever sort of Brexit takes place. If you are looking for an agent that is well established, professional and communicative, then contact us to find out how we can get the best out of your investment property. Sell to

wagering that, in the next few years, the Wigan property market will tumble by more than what they spend on their short-term rental home. They plan to buy another Wigan home in a couple of years i.e. a ‘sell to renter’.

In the winter and spring months from 2014 to 2017 an average of 336 Wigan homes a month were sold, yet in the same time frame in 2018, 359 were sold, an INCREASE of 6.73%. Nationally, the number of people moving home in the first part of 2018 had DECREASED by 11.99% on the 2014-2017 average over the same months.

Well, in the short term, demand for middle to upper market Wigan rental properties could increase as these ‘sell to renters’ demand such properties. However, for homeowners of middle to upper

So, what exactly is happening?

Interesting times ahead, but I would offer a caution to Wigan landlords interested in buying houses in the middle to upper end of the market - yields in this sector can be quite low.

I have seen a subtle, yet noticeable number of homeowners, predominantly in the middle to upper end of the Wigan property market, who have been selling their homes, renting another place and

How will this affect the market?

market Wigan properties, you might have less people wanting to buy your type of property, as some buyers are turning to renting?

Business View

Only Five Months To Go by Chris Alcock - CMA Accountancy

Is your business ready for MTD? There are over 2.1 million VAT registered business in the UK and a recent survey indicated that 44% of these were unware of the Making Tax Digital changes coming next April. With just five months to go, it is vital that those businesses affected start to make plans to ensure that their bookkeeping systems can cope with these changes. What do we know so far? From April 2019, businesses that are registered for VAT and have a turnover above the VAT registration threshold of ÂŁ85,000 will be required to keep digital records and submit their VAT return to HMRC through MTD compatible software. Software developers such as Xero, Quickbooks and Sage are working to ensure that the changes are in place for April 2019. What about spreadsheets and manual records?

compatible with MTD. CMA are online accounting experts, and are Xero and QuickBooks partners, so we can put you in a good position to help you choose which software is best for your business. Many of our clients have already made the switch to online accounting and are enjoying the benefits that it brings. These include more efficient systems, reduced administration time and cost, more accurate reports, higher tax savings and better security. The amount of changes being implemented means that it is difficult to stay abreast of all these and therefore speaking to a professional will help and may not cost as much as you think.

Special Offer! For a limited period we are offering all new clients Xero or Quickbooks software free of charge for 6 MONTHS if they sign up for our services.

As part of the MTD consultations, HMRC have been persuaded that those businesses that do keep their VAT records on a spreadsheet, will be able to continue to do so for now. However, these businesses will still have to make changes to their current spreadsheets so that they can link to HMRC via bridging software. This is likely to be a temporary situation though and over the next five years the new MTD regime will affect the reporting of the other business taxes.

We offer a FREE consultation for anyone that would like to speak to us about these changes. Just drop by our office on Skull House Lane in Appley Bridge or give us a call.

Eat to boost your

Mood

Eating right can also help alleviate Seasonal Affective Disorder and help you beat those winter blues. A good, balanced diet is key to giving both your immune system and your mental health a much needed boost. Go Mediterranean: Scientists have found that those who followed a classic Mediterranean diet were 30 per cent less likely to develop depression. It is thought that the combination of omega 3 fatty acids together with natural unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants from olive oil and nuts, flavonoids and other phytochemicals from fruit and other plant foods and large amounts of natural folates and other B vitamins in the overall Mediterranean dietary pattern may help to protect against depression. Eat selenium: Studies have linked low mood with low levels of the mineral selenium. Eating nuts is the best way to increase your intake. Brazil nuts are the most concentrated selenium source. Just three nuts contain the recommended daily intake of selenium for a woman. Watch your blood sugar: The glycaemic index (GI) is a numerical system that indicates how quickly carbohydrates will make your blood sugar levels rise. Fluctuations in blood sugar lead to swings in mood and energy. Choose foods that are slow to digest, and which offer a gradual, sustained energy release. Boost your serotonin: Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which is converted in our bodies into the neurotransmitter serotonin. Low serotonin levels are often associated with depression. Proteins

such as lean chicken, tuna, salmon and beans are tryptophan-rich and have been proven to boost the mood. Get plenty of fish: Research suggests that omega 3, the essential fatty acids found in fish oils, can improve your mood. Regular consumption of oily fish (salmon, tuna and mackeral) has been associated with better moods and a higher self-reported mental health, even after adjustment for factors such as income, age and other eating patterns. Remember that depression is not low mood. It is a serious mental health condition. If you think you are suffering from depression please consult your GP. By Louise Addison

Is your spine/back/neck getting on your nerves? If you’re in too much pain to read on, just ring us, nine times out of ten we can help you. If you come to us and we can’t help you, we won’t charge you a penny. Does this sound like you? You’ve had pain in your neck or back, on and off for months or many years, it often goes away, but keeps coming back? Perhaps this time its stayed around a lot longer than usual, got worse, and not going away? Perhaps it goes down the front or back of your arm or leg, and you could have pain, pins and needles and numbness there too? It might be in your shoulder or bottom/hips too? Can you feel that something is trapped? Are you struggling to do important things because of the pain? It might be that the pain is making you avoid things – like normal life, movement, your job or being with your family. And we know what’s it’s like when you can’t sleep. Often, the pain can make us worried, grumpy or even anxious/depressed (and make it hard to get on with people around us). Have you already tried everything, and you are still struggling with pain? Some people come to us as a last resort, after years of pain, suffering and very little quality of life being lived. Some come straight to us. People join us because they want a natural, effective approach to getting out of pain and back to a better life. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been told to ‘learn to live with it, or it’s your age’ (both are false ideas), Chiropractic care can still usually help you. Yes, you’ll need to do some work too, but it’s always possible to get better!

Wondering how Chiropractic care can help you? We take care to find out what the problem causing your pain and symptoms is first. Then, we can then design the right care to help you do get out of pain and heal the underlying problem effectively and safely. Almost always, it’s a misaligned or lockedup spine (joints, discs, nerves and muscle). Within a consultation and digital X-ray examination (if required) we can say if we can help you. We then work on the problem by hand, without drugs or surgery. It is especially gentle and comfortable.

Is Chiropractic just for bad backs, sciatica, neck pain, headaches, things like that? The reason Chiropractic care often works so well for these is because it improves how your spine works, and most of these problems start there. This also helps the nerves (spinal cord) living inside your spine to work better. Because these nerves connect your brain to your body, this helps your brain and body communicate much better. Better communication helps you better heal, repair and manage naturally. This helps all of your mind and body; it’s not just for your spine. There is no real limit to your potential to heal. When our patients get better, we always tell them that/Chiropractic didn’t treat or cure them at all - it simply helped them use their own ability to heal. Chiropractors specialise in the care of your nervous system & spine so that you are better able to use your own ability to heal.

Christmas with

Autism

Autistic kids often find comfort in routine. Christmas means change: decorations, Christmas music, crowds, balloons, pop-up markets and parades, disruption to the normal school timetable. There’s a lot of potential for upset. Identify possible changes and pre-warn your child. It can be helpful to show them photos or create a social story to help them understand the sequence of events and what will be expected of them, or use an advent calendar as a visual countdown to Christmas. If your autistic child is old enough and / or verbal enough, involve them in planning which events they want to be part of, and which events they’d prefer to skip. For events they can’t avoid, what will help? A fidget toy? Noise-cancelling headphones? Many ASD kids don’t like surprises so it might be better to pre-discuss gifts. When our son was younger he didn’t like wrapped gifts, even ours. We left his unwrapped, but my husband and I explained that wrapping was part of our Christmas to each other and it was important for us. We felt it was good for him to see that sometimes he needed to compromise too. Discuss the Christmas Day schedule in advance. Who will arrive, when and how they should be greeted. Some kids (even those without ASD)

hate hugging relatives so pre-warn guests if this is an issue. It might be prudent to go through the etiquette for receiving a gift too – but be prepared for the odd slip-up! Finally, if they don’t want to eat the Christmas food and would rather have a sandwich, or a pizza, let them. It’s a small thing, don’t sweat it. In the grand scheme of things it’s not important. And things change. My fifteen-year-old autistic son now tucks in with the rest of us but for three years between the ages of four and seven he ate cheese on toast for Christmas lunch (because that’s what he ate for lunch every day!). We look back now and smile fondly at the memory. By Alison Foster

Volvo

V60

by Tim Barnes-Clay At first glance, you think the new Volvo V60 is the V90. Then you get closer and realise it’s smaller than its brother. The cars look very similar, and that’s a good thing because they’re both handsome. If you put both models next to each other, I bet you’d agree with me that the V60 beats the V90 in terms of attractiveness. Why? Because it’s more compact and as a result, the car looks more taut and athletic. But the new estate has far more about it than sex appeal. The outgoing V60’s boot has been superseded by a load area that’s the biggest in its segment. Open the tailgate, and 539 litres of cargo capacity greets you. Crucially, the fresh V60 beats its German foes in this area. The BMW 3 Series Touring’s boot only

Fast Facts • 0-62 mph: 7.9 secs • Combined mpg: 61.4 • Engine layout: 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel turbo • Max. power (PS): 190 • CO2: 119 g/km • Price: £36,350

offers 495 litres and Audi’s A4 Avant manages just 505-litres. The Swede is longer than the Audi and BMW too, meaning there’s decent room for four adult occupants. A fifth person could squeeze into the middle of the back seat, but a prominent transmission tunnel hump hampers legroom. In the front, all looks classy and relaxed, with a dashboard that is mainly digital. There’s not as much metal or wood in the V60 when compared with the V90 - instead, you get soft plastics. However, this doesn’t rain on the parade - everything still looks solid and well screwed together. Behind the wheel, the new V60 is planted and comfy. I was handed the keys to the 190PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder D4 model. The diesel engine pulls

69 like a train with zero to 62mph arriving in 7.9 seconds. It’s an efficient unit too, returning a claimed average of 61.4mpg. The new estate car’s ride is excellent, primarily due to the flexible suspension system, and the steering weights up well from 40mph. These two things alone make the 2018 model V60 a delight to drive. It’s entirely suited to the UK’s roads, making it an ideal commuting machine. Thanks to its general roominess, it’s also a perfect family vehicle. The new Volvo V60’s spec is a bit of a downer. From launch, there are only two levels of trim - Momentum and Inscription. Happily, the more athletic R-Design and elevated Cross-Country variants will soon join the party. And while the V60 is well kitted-out with features like LED headlights, sat-nav and a portrait

touchscreen, other alluring accessories, such as semi-autonomous driving aids and Apple CarPlay, are on the options list. These can make an already costly car even more expensive to buy or lease. Still, you should have the V60 on your shopping list if an estate car is what you’re after – especially one as eye-catching and accommodating as this.

Dunham

by Jess Phillips

Dunham Massey Park (WA14 4SJ) not only has a vibrant history dating back to the 14th century, but is also home to a huge variety of wildlife, which makes it a perfect location to begin this beautiful 3.8 mile route. The National Trust Park offers a large car park to begin your journey, costing £7 or free for members. From the car park, head through the visitor centre and past the hall and stables towards the old mill. Don’t miss the ancient oak tree in its fenced enclosure – the oldest tree on the estate, it is estimated to have stood for over 500 years, and predates everything else in the Park. As you forge through stunning woodland to reach the mill building, the path bends slightly to the left – follow it across to the main path and take the first one into the deer park. A highlight in their own right, Dunham’s deer roam freely about the estate enjoying the autumnal crunch of fallen leaves, and provide a perfect photo opportunity.

Follow the path through to Island Pond and wind left around it, then take a right. This path leads you to the very edge of the Park – on your left you’ll see a wooden gate which forms a barrier for the newly planted trees to protect them from any wayward woodland critters. The hush of this new path leaves the impression of travelling through greenery untouched by time and civilisation, and you get to observe the saplings close up. There’s another gate at the end – go through this towards the Charcoal Road gatehouse, where you leave the Park’s boundary. Climb the stile and cross the road into the wood via a public footpath and emerge – carefully! – onto the 17th fairway of Dunham Forest Golf Club. Once you’ve made sure nobody’s teeing off from the far right, head straight across the fairway to the path, bearing in mind you might have to let a few roaming golf buggies past! The next public footpath is about 50 yards away –

72 you’ll want to continue into the next field and turn right onto Oldfield Lane. There’s another footpath leading off from this, then turn left at the next path until you reach School Lane. The quaint little village store on this road is not to be missed; with a cream exterior and red accents, you’d almost believe you’d headed back to the early twentieth century. If you’re hankering for something to quench your thirst, the Axe & Cleaver pub can also be found on School Lane for a mid-walk pint. Cross the canal bridge once you reach it and head left onto the towpath. The route goes under one bridge and over two, and along the canal there’s a great view of Dunham Massey hall framed by trees – even better if a barge goes past at the right time. You’ll eventually reach a set of steps on the right, although these are easy to miss. Make sure you don’t head down the steep muddy path before the steps, and head left at the bottom under the canal. At the end, go left onto Park Lane, where you’ll pass The Swan with Two Nicks pub. The building got its name from the annual swan upping ceremony, when companies used to mark swans’ beaks to identify who they belonged to. Vintners – wine merchants – used two nicks to the beak for their swans, which is how the name arose. Continue over the footbridge spanning the River Bollin, and find yourself on Brickkiln Lane. Rather than following the road around to the left, go straight over the stile into Dunham Park. There’s a slight climb up to the Hall, and treat yourself to a tea and cake at the visitor centre or peruse the gift shop before heading home. The Old Courts are delighted to be teaming up with the brilliant Pendle Productions, and this year’s gigantic professional pantomime at The Old Courts is set to have more sparkle, more dazzle and more magic than you can ever imagine. Pendle Production’s team are promising a spectacular musical pantomime that will launch this year’s Christmas season into the stars and back again. Take a wicked Giant Blunderbore (at twelve foot tall), Fleshcreep the Tax Collector and you certainly need a good Fairy Twinkle (with sparkling light up costumes) to make sure everything works out ‘right’ in the end. The Evil Fleshcreep is collecting taxes on behalf of his master (the Giant) and because Dame Tilly Trott has no money, she must sell her beautiful cow Daisy to pay her rent. Jack is conned into parting with Daisy for a worthless bag of Beans, and when Fleshcreep returns, he kidnaps the Princess to be Giant Blunderbore’s wife! Only Jack can save the day and with the help of Fairy Twinkle and you, he climbs the Beanstalk to rescue Daisy and

the Princess. With fantastic costumes and bright colourful sets this production has to be a must on everyone’s Christmas wish list!

To win one of the five family tickets (each ticket admits two adults and two children), simply visit our website www.locallife247.co.uk, click on ‘free stuff’ and then on ‘competitions’. To enter the competition just input your answer to the following question; How tall is Giant Blunderbore? The expiry date for the competition is Friday 7th December 2018 and winners will be notified on Monday10th December 2018. Entrants must be over 16 years of age. Only one entry per household. Local Life 247 cannot accept responsibility for entries that do not reach us. Employees of Local Life 247 Ltd and their families are not eligible to enter this competition.

To buy tickets for this production, visit www. theoldcourts.com or visit the box office at The Old Courts.

80 Gardening

Up the garden

path

by Angie Barker

Award Winner

I realise at this time of year most of us will not be thinking about our gardens, but rather racking our brains to come up with some original gift ideas. (Hubby take note!) However this time of year really is a great time to think about the structure in our gardens and how we can improve it so that we get better use and more enjoyment from our outside space next year. When I sit down to design a garden I think about how to create a sense of journey through the space, no matter how big or small it is. This will draw you out into the garden to explore it and will make it more interesting and the right path is a key design consideration. The first decision is to consider whether you go for straight or curved, or a combination of the two. Curved paths bring a sense of calm to a space and slow you down so that you tend to take more time looking at the garden as you walk around it and suits cottage garden schemes. Straight paths bring a sense of the contemporary to a space and create strong clean lines in a design. They can also be successfully used in formal gardens. Practical issues also need consideration. A curved path to a childrens play area or a shed would not be practical as in these situations you would want to take the quickest route.

Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

The second consideration is what material to build your path out of. They can be attractive additions to a garden scheme and whether you decide on natural paving, porcelain tiles, smooth concrete, setts or brick, the detail can be important so consider it as much as the overall plan of the garden. Bound resin is also a good choice where there are mobility issues. Getting back to original gift ideas, Hubby harps on every year about me being difficult to buy for – just give me a bottle of fizz (preferably Champagne and the pink variety) a good gardening book and a T Rex CD (young uns won’t have heard of T Rex ... or CDS) and I’m a happy lady. Have a wonderful Christmas everyone and a peaceful and happy new year.

Now is the time to start conditioning your lawn to get the best results in the upcoming months - a little investment now will pay dividends in the near future! Following this year’s hot and dry summer, your lawn really needs help to fully recover. It could now be suffering with high levels of compaction and thatch, which will encourage moss development. To tackle these problems, you need these essential treatments: • Nutragreen 3 & 4 treatments • Aeration • Scarification • Moss control Our seasonal treatments start from just £15*. These exceptional weather conditions have led to high demand; to avoid disappointment, we are advising that you book your treatments early.
