School’s Out
In this issue
Brace yourselves – the school summer holidays are coming down the path faster than a five-year-old at home time.
7 18 20 22 48 52 56 60 62 64 67 68 71 72 82
For working parents, welcome to the start of a six-week juggling act; for grandparents, welcome to having your house turned upside down for the next month and a bit. Long school holidays are nothing new, indeed they provided inspiration for Enid Blyton’s Famous Five stories from the early 1940s onwards. The only difference was that back then, children seemed more adept at making their own entertainment. These days, children seem to be glued to their computer tablets… and getting them to do old-fashioned activities like, err.. stringing a few sentences together can be quite a challenge. However, once you have managed to prise them off these technological time-hoovers, there are plenty of ways to keep them occupied. In this edition, we’ve featured a set of recipes specifically aimed at children. You’ll be glad to hear that unlike some, these don’t require a visit to Fortnum & Mason before you even get out a mixing spoon. Once you’ve tried them, why not have a look at the various summer holiday clubs in the area, some of which are mentioned in this magazine? Some see the school holidays as a test to be endured, but why not think of it as an opportunity to try new activities as a family? During term time, it can be nigh-on impossible to spend quality time together. But with light nights now in full swing, there’s nothing stopping you!

Lock Up Call Police are reminding locals in the Shevington and Appley Bridge area to lock up after an increase in burglaries recently. Officers say that in four cases, access was gained by entering unlocked sheds and using garden implements to force the locks of the windows/ doors. They stress it is essential that sheds are locked and garden tools are put away. As a result of this increase, the area policing team say they have worked closely with the community to gather evidence and intelligence regarding this issue. This evidence has led to some significant results and also an arrest. To contact the police for non-emergency matters, dial 101.

Marking Methodism
Last year’s extravaganza raised £6,200 - taking the total amount raised by the ladies since 2008 to a staggering £27,805. This year’s event should see them go past the £30,000 mark.
250 years of Methodism in Wigan will be celebrated at a street party on Sunday, July 13. That was the date in 1764 which John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, first visited and preached in the town. It was the first of several visits which led to the establishment of a number of local churches, including Crooke, Gidlow, Shevington, Standish, The Vale Methodist in Appley Bridge and Whitley.
There will be music by Old Hall Community Brass Band, a dancing display by The Chris Woolfenden School of Dance, Wigan Musical Theatre Group will be doing songs from the shows and as usual there will be a home grown fruit and veg stall, cakes, fancy goods, homemade cards and so on.
The street party starts at 10.30am with a walk from Queens Hall Methodist Church on Market Street in Wigan town centre to The Wiend, where it is believed that Wesley first preached. 11am sees the grand opening of the day outside Wigan Library, and from then until 4pm there will be free activities and events.
Tickets are £5 available from Kath on 01695 721038, from Edith on 01695 623686 , from Anne on 01942 515409 or the club on 01695 623902.

Online Revolution
Voices for Hospice
Accessing Wigan Council services is now even easier thanks to a new online service. Residents can create their very own online account - called MyAccount giving them access to a range of council services at the click of a mouse or at the swipe of a smart phone.
The first Voices for Hospice Concert in aid of Wigan and Leigh Hospice takes place at Robin Park Arena on Saturday, July 19.
The authority is promoting a new digital approach to the way that services are offered as part of its “deal” with residents. The increased use of online services will have money saving benefits for both residents and the council. Residents can view their council tax details, make payments, apply for discounts, and amend address details online. They’ll also be able to make a housing benefit or free school meals application and complete a change of circumstances form online. More services will come online during 2014, including booking appointments for births, deaths and marriages; reporting a range of issues and applying to the housing register. Residents without access to the internet can use the computers at their local library free of charge. There are other computers available in the local community and free support to help residents get online. Visit www. wigan.gov.uk/getonline or phone 01942 489009 to sign up for a free three-week course. Register for MyAccount today at www.wigan.gov.uk/ myaccount

Cool for It’s that time of the year again... yep, soon the kiddies will be off school for their summer holidays. And as sure as night follows day, by day seven most will have said “I’m bored” at least once. Fear not though here’s your ever-dependable Local Life to the rescue! During the school year, it’s hard to find time to bake with the kids, so now is the perfect opportunity to dig out your apron. To inspire you, here are some recipes you can use to keep the little ones from climbing the walls.
Strawberry Lollies
Banana Muffins Ingredients • 200g plain flour • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 3 large mashed bananas • 150g caster sugar • 1 egg • 75g melted butter
Ingredients
Method
• 350g strawberries
Preheat the oven to 180°c/Gas 4 and pop 12 paper baking cases in a muffin tin.
• 4 tbsp strawberry jam • 200 ml double cream • 6 tbsp Greek yoghurt
Method Take the tops off the strawberries and slice them into a bowl.
Mix together the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt in a bowl. In another but larger bowl, mix together the bananas, egg, sugar and melted butter. Fold in the flour mixture and stir until smooth. Spoon the mixture evenly into the baking cases.
Add the jam.
Carefully put the muffins into the oven and bake for between 25 and 30 minutes.
Mash them with a potato masher.
Allow to cool a little and then enjoy!
Whisk the cream in another bowl until it makes stiff peaks. Fold in the yoghurt. Stir the two mixtures together and put in the lolly moulds. Get them into the freezer and enjoy once they’re solid.

Kids Tasty Apple Pancakes Ingredients • 1 beaten egg • 2tsp baking powder • 100g plain flower • 3tbsp caster sugar • 25g butter • 150ml milk • 2 thinly sliced apples
Method
Choccy Coconut Ball
Pop the flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl. Make a dip in the middle with a spoon and pour in a bit of the milk and all of the egg. Mix it up to make a smooth paste.
Ingredients for 5 servings
Slowly add the rest of the milk and beat the mixture so that it makes a soft liquid (this is the batter).
• 45g desiccated (dried) coconut, plus a bit extra for rolling the balls in
Stir in 1 tablespoon of the caster sugar.
• 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
Heat a little bit of oil in a frying pan and put a large tablespoon of the batter into the hot pan. Let it cook for 2-3 minutes until it’s golden brown underneath and almost set on top. Then flip it over until the other side is cooked.
• 1 tin condensed milk (397g)
Keep the pancakes warm in some kitchen roll while you’re cooking the others.
• 250g digestive biscuits
Method Crush up the biscuits in a food bag (you can bash them with a rolling pin) and pop into a mixing bowl. Add the cocoa and coconut and stir together.
Then melt the butter into the pan and fry the apple slices until they’re nice and golden. Add the remaining sugar and stir until dissolved.
Pour in the condensed milk.
Put some of the apple slices inside two of the pancakes for a super sweet treat!
Keep making balls until all the mixture is gone then pop into the fridge for 30 minutes to set.
www.locallife247.co.uk
Scoop out a small handful of the mixture and roll into a ball then roll in the extra coconut.

Class from the Past - Thomas Linacre School, Parsons Walk
This month’s Class from the Past is from the old Thomas Linacre School on Parsons Walk near Wigan town centre. The school is no longer there, but the building now forms part of Wigan & Leigh College. Ex-students will know that part of the building gives a nod to its former use by housing the Linacre Theatre. It’s believed this

Village Festival
Entente Cordiale
It’s summer time, and in Parbold that means one thing – it’s time for the Parbold Village Festival! This year’s event takes place on Saturday, July 12, on Alder Lane playing fields. The theme is ‘A Day at The Beach’ and there will be lots on offer to keep everyone entertained.
Town-twinning chiefs are on the lookout for local people to help strengthen the links between Wigan and the French town of Angers. Perhaps you are looking for a French pen pal to practice your language skills, or maybe you would be happy hosting a French person who would then return the complement in Angers?
At 1.15 pm the Show Tent will be opened by 105-yearold Mimms Goodger, who is believed to be Parbold’s oldest resident. After that, Parbold Pink Panthers and Skelmersdale Boundary Harriers present Kathryn’s Festival Five Mile Run (at 2.15pm) & Kids’ 1k Fun Run (at 1.45pm). The main, five mile run will start from Alder Lane Playing Fields. There will be medals and cupcakes for all finishers as well as prizes for first male and first female, plus some spot prizes You can register from 1pm-1.45pm on the day. Entry is £2 for the 1k Fun Run for under 16s (under 9s to be accompanied by an adult). For the Five Mile Run, the cost is £5 attached or £7 unattached.
If you can help, please telephone 01942 489193 or email angers@wigan.gov.uk
RBL Meetings The Standish branch of the Royal British Legion holds a meeting on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm at Standish Unity Club, Cross Street. All ex-service personnel are welcome to go along.

Check Your Vote West Lancashire residents are being urged to check whether they are still eligible to vote following the biggest shake-up in 100 years. A new system called ‘Individual Electoral Registration’ has now come into force in the borough. Previously, the ‘head of household’ was responsible for registering everyone who lived at an address, but now every individual is responsible for their own voter registration. The new system means that for the first time people are now able to register online. To register, you will need to provide a few more details, including your National Insurance number and date of birth. This helps make the electoral register more secure. West Lancashire Borough Council is now writing to local residents to tell them about the change. Gill Rowe, Returning Officer, said: “If you are not registered to vote,
then you won’t be able to exercise your democratic right to have a say in future elections and referendums. If you receive a letter inviting you to register, it’s very important you respond.” For more information, call the Elections Office on 01695 585014.
From ‘Grot’ To ‘Hot’ Standish folk are being asked to step up and help get the area sparkling. Standish In Bloom, a sub group of the Standish Community Forum, is looking for willing volunteers to help turn local grot spots into hot spots. Sounds like something of interest? Meetings are held at Standish Library on Mondays at 5.30pm (Except on Bank Holidays). More details can be found at www.facebook. com/standishinbloom

Help For Heroes
Pot Luck
The Black Bull pub on Market Street, Standish, is holding a charity fun day on Sunday, August 24 in aid of the Help for Heroes charity.
They’re the bugbear of many people in Wrightington and the Lancashire part of Appley Bridge - but local roads and pavements are set to improve in the next few years. That’s the message from Lancashire highways chiefs following the sign-off of a 15 year Transport Asset Management Plan (TAMP).
Doors open at 11am and there will be a host of events throughout the day and evening, including live acts on the beer garden stage, a big raffle, bouncy castle and face painting for the kiddies. There’s no admission charge as collection buckets will be passed round during the day so please dig deep.
The first five-year phase will focus on improving A, B and C roads and pavements, the second phase will target residential and rural unclassified roads, and the third phase will tackle bridges, street lights and traffic signals.
Bargain Hunt
The news will come as a relief to many who have been concerned about the state of the area’s rural routes.
Bag a bargain in Wrightington thanks to Tunley United Reformed Church. The Mossy Lea Road facility is holding a table top sale on Saturday, July 12, from 10am-2pm.
Wrightington and Appley Bridge County Cllr John Fillis said: “Our main focus will be on making extensive use of treatments which seal surfaces and stop water getting into them to reduce the number of potholes appearing.”

Dos Mundos is run by mum and daughter team Joan Nield and Amy Smith, who both live in Standish. The business has evolved over several years, first starting out in Scotland before opening a second shop locally. You could say they have become part of the fabric of village life! Joan and Amy say the additional services are a natural progression: "By listening to customers - who give us very important feedback - we have decided to try this new venture. It's very exciting. There is nowhere in the area that stocks fabric and wool, so instead of going into town, we are giving local people the chance to buy local. "It will provide an important addition to our offering, and will complement what we already do. The clothes we stock are all sourced ethically, they wear well and are produced at a high quality for a good price. They know the brands we offer - including Nomads, Braintree, Namaste, Earth Squared and Pachamama - are synonymous with quality. We've got sale items now available and new stock is arriving shortly.

"Customers tell us they like the fact our pieces are handmade and one-of-a-kind, meaning each garment has its own unique finish. They also love the fact the shop is stocked full of beautiful gifts ideas including, jewellery, accessories, small pieces of furniture, bags and purses."

Diabetes Feedback
COPD Help
Do you have and care for someone with diabetes? The NHS in West Lancashire is asking diabetes patients and carers to step forward and help improve services available in the borough
Wigan Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) & Apnoea Support Group meets on the first Wednesday of every month at the Bel Air Hotel on Wigan Lane, Wigan. The group has guest speakers, refreshments and members of Wigan Ukulele club for entertainment. All are welcome including friends and relations. The meetings start at 1.30pm and finish at 3pm. There are no fees or admission charge. For more information, ring Bob on 01942 218377
The local health body already has a diabetes patient network which meets regularly but would welcome some new local people to join this. This could be patients or carers, no matter what the level of experience. Meetings are held once a month but the level of commitment offered is down to each individual. Figures show that over 5,000 people in West Lancashire have been diagnosed with diabetes. Around three million people in the UK live with the condition with a further 850,000 remaining undiagnosed. Greg Mitten, lay member for patient and public involvement on the board of NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “This is a great opportunity for patients of any age and experience to inform the CCG of their experiences. Together we can shape the service in a way that is tailored to the needs and expectations of those living with diabetes.”
Can You Help? Wigan Samaritans shop on Hallgate urgently need new volunteers. Anyone who can spare a morning or afternoon should call 01942 204298 or email wigansams@btconnect.com as soon as possible.
To find out more or to get involved with the local diabetes patient network, contact Tanya Mulvey at NHS West Lancashire on 01695 588170 or email tanya. mulvey@westlancashireccg.nhs.uk

Money & Investments - by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP)
Avoiding Investment Do you manage your own investments and are you happy that they are invested into the right areas? Whilst investors have endured challenging conditions over the last few years, investment fundamentals have remained unchanged. There are a number of common errors that investors make and therefore I thought it useful to familiarise readers with just a few of the mistakes that investors often make when attempting to manage their money. Time Horizons How long do you think you will live? Usually investors are far too conservative which can be a problem when planning their futures. With medical treatment becoming far more effective most people are now living far longer than they imagine they will. Clearly the danger is that funds will be depleted before their lives are over. It is important to have a sound financial strategy that will provide stability and provide income needs throughout ones life. Investment Objectives and Portfolio Strategy Aligning your objectives with your portfolio strategy is critical to determining your long term investment success. A common error is misjudging risk .Generally, the longer the investment time horizon, the more risk one is able to take on. Too many investors focus on short term volatility rather than long term probabilities
of achieving their objectives. Those with a short time horizon objective that overly expose themselves to risk can create a real danger of asset loss during a short term period of volatility which can put their entire financial future in jeopardy. Overlooking Unintended Risk Factors Managing a diversified portfolio of assets can be fraught with hidden risks. Too often portfolios are overexposed to certain risk factors that were never properly recognised. Unintended concentration produces excess risk. This exposes a portfolio to larger fluctuations and the possibility of accelerated losses. Factors such as sector, country and currency all play a roll in a sensibly diversified portfolio. Quite often two different securities that “on the face of it appear different can have similar correlation and consequently market factors such as interest rate movements or commodity price changes can affect both holdings in the same way. Too high a concentration of any of these can expose your assets to risks you never intended Ignoring Global Markets As a result of globalisation there are a significant number of investment opportunities to take advantage of. Try not to make the common mistake of sticking to the domestic market. If you suffer from a home country bias(even with diversification across different sectors) the returns are still in part linked to the overall economic performance and political climate of the home country.

day, after all it’s your financial future. This can cloud judgement and hamper the ability to make rational decisions. Many investors focus on their successes and forget the mistakes they have made. Creating these barriers that block mistakes and over exaggerate success can build an air of over confidence. This may lead to taking on excessive portfolio risk. That is why it is vital to create an environment that is detached from emotion, one that relies on data and impartial analysis to make the right decisions for your financial future.
Mistakes
Have you made any of these mistakes? It is very difficult to avoid all of the investment pitfalls – even for the most experienced of investors. Many investors simply do not have the time or resource to process the vast amount of data available and then to apply it to their personal investment requirement. Geographical diversification is a key part to building a well constructed portfolio that will grow your assets. Investing abroad can help strengthen your portfolio by creating a larger pool of opportunities from which to find worthy investments. Over Confidence It is only natural to experience emotional fluctuations as you watch the ups and downs of the market each

Accountancy - by Chris Alcock ACMA
How to Collect More Money CMA is a firm of Accountants based in Wigan. We provide the usual services such as annual accounts and tax returns etc but we also work proactively with our clients to ensure they have a great business. We do this by providing them with the tools to manage their business. This could be by helping them implement cloud based accounting software such as Xero, providing them with regular management accounts or generally just being available for business owners to bounce ideas off. This month we look at ways for companies to manage their customers so that they get paid on time. Cashflow is the lifeblood of any business and all businesses will struggle without positive cashflow. Many businesses go bust every year simply because they are owed money. Systematic, well planned credit control practices must be put in place before you start giving credit terms to customers. The following tips can help your stay in the black: Set out your terms and conditions This is your opportunity to clearly state when payment is due and what will happen if payment is not received Get to know your customer It’s vital you know the background of the person you’re working with. This information can help you decide what credit limit to set, or whether to stay away from certain businesses altogether. Check references There is no better way to get a sense of character than by word of mouth. Business associates will be pleased to sing the praises of good contacts.
Invoice on a timely basis Credit control starts with the invoice. Send it out promptly, accurately and to the right person. The quickest way to do this is to send it via an email and ask for a read receipt! Payment chasing should be a tight operation Use a good system such as Xero to send reminders when payment is due. Be sure to make a telephone call or send a letter as soon as an invoice becomes due. Employ an experienced credit controller If you have the resources, employ a credit controller, or outsource to a company with expertise. Don’t leave it to the sales team! Flexible payment methods Modern businesses should offer a range of payment types. Options include credit card payments, Paypal, and other website payment methods. These are just a few tips that we give to clients to help them stay on top of their cashflow. Every business is different and some methods work better than others depending on their circumstances.

Taste Test – By David Sudworth
Howard’s Way... Wigan has come on in leaps and bounds since I was in short trousers. The place is buzzing again after a few tough years, and the eating out experience is much improved. However, for my money, Gallimore’s Fine Restaurant on the historic Wiend is the one which sets the standard for others to follow. Its setting is handy for getting away from the town centre hustle and bustle. But location on its own means little if the food isn’t up to scratch. Thankfully, Howard Gallimore’s team delivers every single time. I meet my colleague Chris there for lunch. Walking up from Millgate, Gallimore’s has that all-important kerb appeal. The cobbled route gives way to a sophisticated frontage. Some diners opt to soak up some summer rays on the terrace, but I’m keen to see what it’s like inside. The interior reminds me of my favourite eatery in the northern French city of Reims. It’s stylish, yet not stuffy. I’m unsure whether France’s favourite enfant terrible, Serge Gainsbourg, ever visited Wigan before lighting up his last Gitanes in 1991. But if he had, I could imagine him sat at a table window here, watching the world pass by with a poetry book open on the table and a glass of Gallimore’s finest between his fingers. He’d certainly have no shortage to choose from, they offer an excellent range of Cave de Masse house wines; a dry white, a medium white and Merlot red. My starter is tiger prawns with scallops and garlic butter with lemon herb sauce and a lightly toasted slice of baguette. As I’ve said before, cooking seafood, especially scallops, is a skill; but one which the team at Gallimore’s has perfected. Finding the right sauce for this is also difficult, given the delicate nature of
48
the meat, and it was a delight not to be presented with something blitzed with garlic. Although I love garlic, many chefs use it far too liberally. The fact that Gallimore’s don’t do this demonstrates a kitchen team full of confidence in their own abilities.
As summer is now in full swing, Chris had the fan of melon with seasonal fruit, Parma ham and raspberry coulis. Again, despite its simplicity, this isn’t the easiest of dishes to pull off well and that’s why there are some truly awful versions around. Chris was particularly impressed by the varying array of fruits, including lychees, and their textures which contrasted well with the coulis. It’s clear a lot of thought had gone into this, and it provided a delightfully light and seasonal opening course.
table, a delicious and generous serving of crème brûlée was waiting for me. I was pleased they stuck to vanilla as that’s a personal favourite. Along with summer fruits, I was also treated to passion fruit flesh drizzled over whipped cream. Again, it’s an imaginative twist which demonstrates the high calibre of behind-the-scenes professionals at work here. As we left, I spied an exquisite selection of whisky and brandy among the 220 bottles behind the bar, including my own personal tipple when funds allow, Hennessy Cognac XO. Mental note made to self: must leave the car at home next time… For the main course, I decided to live dangerously by opting for a meal which had a creamy mushroom white wine sauce. I’ve always been wary of these sorts of sauces, again because of the desire of some establishments to kill it with garlic. When the plate arrived, it looked like a work of art; the asparagus rolled neatly into the tender chicken and some green beans ‘bound’ together by a hollowed out slice of carrot. When a dish can make you smile, you know you are getting quality. Once tasted, my faith was repaid as the sauce was sumptuous. Chris also had reason to wax lyrical about his roasted topside of beef served with creamy spring onion mash and seasonal vegetables, topped with red wine gravy. The beef was cooked to perfection and complimented by the gravy, which again wasn’t overpowered by too much wine or salt. The mash could have been a meal in itself with its creamy texture but when put together with the beef, it created a fantastic display of culinary ability. Chris’s dessert was a selection of dainty offerings; key lime pie, a cream slice, profiterole, a mini fruit medley, toffee fudge back and a spun sugar decoration which, again, provided a real talking point. On my side of the
It’s not hard to see why Gallimore’s, which has been at The Wiend for the past 10 years, is so revered. Howard tells me he buys local where possible, with potatoes purchased from a farm in Wigan borough and the meat supplied by England’s butchers at Pemberton and Billinge. Its secret is strength in depth; it not only has the fantastic location, but knowledgeable, friendly staff who regularly exceed their customers’ high standards. It’s by far the best meal I’ve had in Wigan town centre. I’m not the only one to think that, a quick look at the online review confirms it is ‘the place to go’ when in town. This all adds up to a fine dining experience you’ll not forget in a hurry. Not that they’ll be resting on their laurels any time soon. After all, that’s simply not Howard’s way… Gallimore’s Fine Restaurant 13 The Wiend, Wigan, WN1 1PF Tel: 01942 492100 www.gallimores.com

The Legacy of ‘Turny Platt’ As with many small businesses in different fields, these are challenging times for local independent solicitors but this notwithstanding, Platt & Fishwick solicitors of Wigan and Standish celebrates their centenary this year. Continuity has always been valued within the firm with two of the four current partners following in the footsteps of various predecessors over the years in serving their “Articles of Clerkship” (training contracts in modern parlance) with the late and much missed Tom Fishwick. After serving in the RAF in the war, Tom joined the firm in 1951, only finally retiring over 40 years later. Tom married Avril, daughter of Frank Platt, who was a very well known figure in the town in his day. It has always been very much a family firm and both Avril and one daughter, Joanne, qualified as solicitors, spending some years with the practice. The world was a very different place when Frank first “put up his brass plate” in King Street in 1914. Solicitors then were certainly seen as there to serve the interests of the moneyed and propertied classes. Frank was always concerned with the lot of the working man and in fact ran a second office, with another brass plate, at his home in Hindley. Clients of all kinds would arrive in the evenings sitting in a row on an old oak bench in the hall, waiting their turn. If clients could pay they did but if they could not do so, they did not do so. That clients always came first was always the guiding principle. Without realising it, “Turny Platt” – Platt the Attorney –
was running a one man Legal Aid service before such a thing existed. Frank believed in public service. He acted as constituency agent for Wigan’s first Labour MP, John Alan Parkinson, and acted throughout his career for the National Association of Labour and Socialist Clubs. He set Frank Platt up and for over 25 years was chairman of the Federation of Lancashire and Cheshire Agricultural Societies. He acted for Wigan Rugby League Club, as did Tom in his turn, and even found time to be a driving force behind the Wigan & District Amateur Dramatic Society. Tom continued this fine tradition, becoming known as Wigan’s Perry Mason as he rushed up and down King Street, between his office and the Magistrates Court where he represented all and sundry who sought his services. Once more, the size of the fee mattered less than providing the best possible service and advice. The current partners and all the staff are aware of the firm’s history and strive to keep up Tom Fishwick (Right) these high standards. Even so, it might just be fair to say that they don’t make them quite like that anymore!

Delilah!
Ey Up
David Sudworth tracks down the Wigan-born songwriter who penned one of Tom Jones’ biggest hits…
One of my earliest memories is of my dad pottering round the house singing: “I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window… der, der, der, derr…” Then aged 11 I saw it being hammed up by Tony Angelino, a dubious cabaret performer and mate of resident dimwit Trigger in the hit TV comedy Only Fools and Horses. So in later years I was surprised to find it was sung in a Welsh, rather than a Cockney or Wigan, accent by old snake hips himself, Tom Jones. Imagine my further amazement when it transpires his 1968 hit Delilah was actually written by one of our own. Not that Barry Mason has much of a Wigan accent these days. Despite growing up in Whitley, he seems to have replaced any northern accent he once possessed with a very soft American twang. When I point this out to him, the 79-year-old turns to his partner of nine years, Vanessa, and laughs: “Hey, he doesn’t think I sound like a northerner!” It’s hardly surprising. These days, Barry resides in the exclusive Chelsea district of West London – the place where a 10ft by 15ft garage went on the market for £90,000 a few years ago. He’s spent years criss-crossing the Atlantic and was married to an American for almost a quarter of a century. All a far cry from his roots at 50 Spencer Road, where he was born in July 1935 and spent the first six years of his life.
52
His father, Cecil Mason, hailed from the town and worked on the Wigan Examiner newspaper; a fact that makes Barry very proud and also given him a lifelong respect for journalists. “He was the paper’s youngest editor. There’s even a picture of him with King Edward visiting Central Park. My dad tried to join the Intelligence Service during the war but it was discovered he was riddled with TB. If I hadn’t been a songwriter I’d have followed in his footsteps. I look at some articles and think they’re works of art. Being a songwriter is I think a lot like being a journalist as you have to make the words fit and there’s always a deadline coming up.”
Barry’s father, Cecil, watching King Edward visiting Central Park . Photo courtesy of Wigan World Aged six, the family moved to his grandfather’s farm at Blainscough Hall, Preston Road, Coppull. His mother Phyllis was part of the family which ran Oliver Hart & Sons of Coppull. Oliver was Barry’s uncle and a famous international speedway rider in the 1930s and 1940s.
Barry attended Coppull Council School for a short time before being sent to boarding school in Prestatyn, North Wales. Aged 10, his dad died and a year later Phyllis moved to Blackpool, where she ran The Princes Hotel on North Promenade. “A couple of years after dad died, mum met an American GI and they got married. In those days, America was this fantastic place which you only ever heard about, and while I was away he convinced her to go over there to Ohio.” At 18, Barry joined the Royal Marines for his National Service and eventually went over to join his mother in America. By this time, he’d started to set his sights on a career in the entertainment industry: “I hitchhiked down Route 66 and went to Hollywood. I spent three years trying and failing dismally to become a singer or actor there. I came back home for a holiday and decided to give showbiz one last go by heading to London. I got to know a guy called Tommy Bruce. He’d had some success with a number three hit, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and he asked me to manage him. I didn’t know the first thing about management, I hate the business side of things, but I did it. He was having a bit of a difficult time with not being able to repeat his earlier success so I was sat in bed one night thinking it couldn’t be that hard to write a song, so I started playing around with a few words and ended up writing My Little Girl, which was a B-side.”
girl’ on BBC’s Top of the Pops before going on to marry Monkees drummer and lead singer Micky Dolenz. Juste died in her sleep from a stroke in February this year in Los Angeles, aged 69. Over the past 54 years, his songs have been covered by some of the greatest performers ever, from Elvis Presley (Girl of Mine), Rod Stewart and Eric Clapton (I Just Got Some), Barbra Elvis Presley Streisand (Why Let It Go) and Perry Como (So It Goes). He also wrote the number one hit, I Pretend, for Des O’Connor in 1968. He also revealed that in 1967 he wrote and performed a Wigan-inspired song called Rowbottom Square. TV footage of it are still available of it on the internet: “My sisters Lynn and Diane had a boutique shop at 1 Rowbottom Square, just off Wallgate in Wigan town centre, so I wrote a song about it as a bit of a plug for them.”
“it drew quite a few laughs” From that moment in 1960, Barry went on to write some of the best known tunes ever. Aside from Delilah, he wrote the The Last Waltz for Engelbert Humperdinck. Surprisingly, when the demo was played in the studio, it drew quite a few laughs: “Remember, this was the late 1960s, with sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll and there were we singing: “I had the last waltz with you, two lonely people together” but it still went to the top of the UK, Irish, Australian and New Zealand charts, and got into the American top 30.” Barry went onto to pen Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes), which provided a one-hit wonder for Edison Lighthouse, which spent five weeks at Number One in the charts in January and February 1970. For a while, he dated Manchester-born ‘60s pin up Samantha Juste, who is best known for being the ‘disc
www.locallife247.co.uk
The Wigan-inspired Rowbottom Square Barry added: “I wouldn’t say writing songs is easy, but it’s something I love. When you are writing something, you get a feeling that it would be a good song for a certain singer. That was the same when I wrote Delilah, and in fact I got the inspiration from a 1951 song by Frankie Laine called Jezebel.”
53
Barry in full flow Despite world-wide acclaim, Barry has never forgotten his roots: “I’m quite sentimental. I find that when Wigan Athletic are playing I end up yelling at the TV. I do feel that Wigan and Coppull are home even though I’ve been gone a long time now. I come back every so often to drive past my old homes. As you get older, you care more and more about where you come from. It’d be great to do a gig in Wigan or Chorley. I particularly remember going to Chorley Baths but always hated getting my hair wet for some reason!”
“it’s just magnificent” But after almost 50 years, does he ever get sick of talking about Delilah? “Not at all. I’ve heard it played all over the place. Whether it’s some guy whose had a few drinks and is murdering it on the karaoke or it coming on the jukebox
54
while I was in a bar in Latvia, it’s just magnificent. A few years ago, I was invited to watch a Welsh rugby match and over the tannoy they announced that I was in the audience so they started playing Delilah. It With Tom Jones was unbelievable because everyone, and I mean everyone, all 80,000 of them, were singing along. Actors don’t have that, when they go to work they speak other people’s words but with a songwriter they’re your words. “I’ve not got massive self-confidence but I also know that I’m the luckiest guy I know. I lived in a golden era for music, apart from the contracts we signed which, if I’d had one piece of legal advice, would have probably doubled the royalties I receive!”

Jack’s Tracks
Beacon Loop August sees the return of the West Lancashire Walking Festival, and to get into the spirit we’ve based a Jack’s Tracks walk loosely on one of the Festival’s most popular attractions; the Beacon Loop walk. This is a walk of many settings, from wooded glades to canal landscapes, from shaded quiet country lanes to magnificent hill tops, and it all takes place within the confines of the Douglas Valley, under the watchful eye of Ashurst’s Beacon. A word of warning though –at 9.1 miles long this is a good 4 ½ hour walk for proper walkers, so if you’re not fit and you don’t like getting mud on your designer boots, this isn’t a walk for you!
56
The West Lancashire Walking Festival runs from 1st-14th August at a variety of sites throughout West Lancashire, and the walks range from 2-11 miles long; see page 59 for further details.
Make your way to the Carr Lane car park off Mill Lane in Up Holland (the nearest postcode is WN8 7RZ). Park up and return to the main road on foot. Turn right and walk down Mill Lane for 350 yards until you see a large concrete speed bump situated in front of metal gates on the left hand side. This is the path you need, so hop over the stile at the side of the gates and walk downhill. Once you emerge out of the wooden area, you’ll follow the path through a collection of old and new housing, most of which isn’t (and has never been) lived in. This footpath runs alongside Walthew Park, the home of the decaying St Joseph’s College, which was once the main Catholic Seminary for the NW of England, and the housing is part of the estate.
The firm flat towpaths of the canal are a welcome contrast to the somewhat softer and hillier terrain of Dean Wood, and this 1.75 mile stretch of the canal is picturesque and enjoyable. Just after the Water’s Edge pub, come off the canal towpath at the bridge and turn left. After 50 yards you’ll see a public footpath sign on the right. Take this path, which takes you behind a couple of cottages to a field.
Cross over the main road at the bottom of the hill, and turn left along Stoney Brow. Once you have walked past the derelict bungalow (Haigh View), turn right at the public footpath sign and head downhill through the fields for 450 yards until you reach a single track road (Lafford Lane). Turn right and follow the road past Jollies I’th Dean farmhouse. Don’t take the next public footpath, which is on the bend by the large wooden outhouse, but carry on until you reach Dean Wood Farm on your left. Set back by the entrance gate is a public footpath; follow this footpath across the field until you reach Dean Wood golf course. Take the path straight ahead to the right of the 2nd hole. After 50 yards you’ll pass a Dean Wood sign and just after this point, take the path on the left and you’ll plunge downhill into the woods. It’s mostly difficult to describe a set walk through woods because most woods have multiple paths, and Dean Wood is no exception. However, ensure that you’re constantly heading downstream and you’ll eventually happen upon a metal green bridge. Cross this bridge and you’ll soon surface from the wood, following the path which eventually runs parallel to the River Douglas. You’ll emerge on the main road near Gathurst Station. Turn left and walk under the railway bridge and just before the Baby Elephant restaurant, you’ll spot a path on the left which leads to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Take this path and head towards Appley Bridge.

Follow the narrow path on the right hand perimeter of the field and carry on that path heading towards an opening to the next field. Once you have reached the opening (which doubles up as a bridge over a well concealed brook), you’ll need to turn left and follow the path upstream parallel to the brook. You’ll eventually arrive at a clearing; keep to the right hand side for the continuation of the footpath and shortly after, you’ll emerge onto Lees Lane. Turn left, and follow Lees Lane for 450 yards and then turn right when you reach a rough concrete road just before Dingle Bungalow. This is Back Lane, which eventually leads to Long Heys Lane. You’re in for a mile long hike uphill along this quiet country lane. Once you’ve passed Ashleigh Farm on the right, look out for an opening cut into the bank around 150 yards further on. We’re turning right here, so climb up the opening and follow the path right round the field until you come

to a bridge over a brook. Cross the bridge, clamber up the opposite bank, and take the diagonal uphill path across the field towards the barred gate. Go through the opening by the gate and follow the uphill path though the wooden area, and as you emerge from the woods you’ll see the spire of Ashurst’s Beacon peeping over the horizon. Bear left as you pass the Beacon monument, and you’ll see two paths which end up in a fork just prior to the exit onto Beacon Lane. Take the left hand path because, just before that fork occurs, you’ll hop over a stile on the left. Follow that path past Bradshaws Farm and after crossing three more stiles you’ll emerge once more on Long Heys Lane. Turn right on Long Heys Lane, pass Stopforth Farm, round the bend, and 50 yards on you’ll see a seven bar gate on the left. Turn left down here and you’ll quickly pass the play area at the back of the Prince William pub

and the well-kept Dalton Cricket Ground. Once you have passed the cricket pitch stick to the left hand perimeter on the farmer’s field until you reach an opening. Go through the opening and head in the same direction on the right hand perimeter of the field. After a short incline, the path falls away and you’re again rewarded with some stunning views. Once you reach the track at the base of the hill, turn right down a farm track and you’ll emerge on a bend in the road. Turn right up Crow Lane and walk 130 yards until you reach a right hand bend and then follow the main track behind the barred gate on the bend. Follow the track through the ruins of Belle Vue Farm and climb the hill until you reach Beacon Lane again. Turn right along Beacon Lane for 50 yards (please be careful here, there is no pavement) and then take the left turn to Elmers Green Lane. Follow the lane downhill to Beacon Golf car park and then turn left and go through the car park. Carry on the path running in the same direction. This merges with another path and then you’ll need to take an immediate right hand turn straight afterwards. Follow this path for its duration and it will eventually start to bear left and you’ll end up in the cark park where you started.

wYour Pets - by Dr Shams Mir Keeping the sting out of our homes
BVSc&AH,MVSc,DrMedVet,MRCVS
The potential for a pet cat or dog to acquire flea infestation is realistic. When fleas are actually seen on an animal it is a problem gone too far. Fleas can cause significant skin disease in some pets and at the least great deal annoyance to humans. Both these problems can be avoided if we understand how fleas bring about the misery and act to prevent the problem. As fleas bite, they inject their saliva into the skin. The Immune system reacts by producing an inflammatory response. In humans it manifests itself as very itchy red spots surrounded by a pink halo. Pets respond variably: some will have lots of fleas without showing any significant symptoms; in others the reaction to flea saliva is so intense and itchy that the pet will inflict a lot of self trauma to the skin through scratching or biting. The lesions in dogs and cats usually develop above the tail base, leading to hair becoming coarser and thin with the skin underneath showing bleeding scratch marks: the Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD). These lesions gradually progress forwards reaching up to the neck. Severe flea infestation can also lead to anaemia. Fleas can carry an intermediate stage of tapeworms and if ingested by the pet they can lead to tapeworm infestation. In small numbers, fleas can be difficult to detect on the animal. However, their presence can be confirmed by finding flea dirt in the hair coat, which are fine black particles - the flea faeces. When placed on wet paper, they will produce a red halo around them due to blood pigment leaking from the particle.
60
A female flea can lay up to fifty eggs per day. These non-sticky eggs fall off from the hair coat and in warm environment soon develop into rather invisible larvae, which are light sensitive and will hide deep into carpets, furniture, cracks and crevices. In time they develop fine shells around them with a baby flea in ready to emerge. In fact 95% of the flea problem thrives in the pet’s environment. The vibration produced by an animal or a human being walking by leads to the new fleas emerging and quickly they get on their host’s body. Whilst flea infestation can easily be prevented by regular flea treatment of the pets, many pet owner choose overthe-counter products, which far too often prove to be ineffective in the face of real flea challenge. There are highly effective & reliable prescription flea treatments which not only eliminate fleas but make their eggs infertile, thus preventing fleas from infesting the environment, representing true value for the money. If fleas are seen on a pet, treating the environment is often as important as treating the pet.

Test Drive - by Tim Barnes-Clay
Audi Q5
If I had over £35,000 I would happily buy the 2.0 TFSI quattro S line version of the Audi Q5. You see, the styling of the Q5, with its coupe-like roof line and wrap-around tailgate, has been subtly refreshed. The design of the headlights has been changed, and the sparkling xenon units are now framed by new-look LED daytime running lights that form a continuous band surrounding more of the lens. Inside, the Audi Q5 is pure understated refinement. The controls are trimmed in chrome, and the narrow panels of the centre console are finished in high-gloss black. The hi-tech central media component, MMI navigation plus, has very few buttons, so you don’t need a degree in Rocket Science to work out how to use it. Other touches such as heated seats, air conditioning and a multifunction steering wheel make the Q5 a dream to drive. The car is as solidly made as an oak table and yet seems as light as a feather. There’s a reason for this: the bonnet and tailgate are crafted from aluminium, while the car’s structural elements integrate ultra-high-strength steels;
64
they reduce weight and improve crash safety. The result is that the Q5 handles like an executive saloon and takes off like a bat out of hell when you dab the accelerator. Indeed, the performance totally matches the looks of this Germanic road warrior: top speed is 138mph and the 0-62mph sprint is done in a satisfying 7.1 seconds. Another explanation for this awesome performance is the updated Q5’s TFSI petrol engine, which combines direct fuel injection, while the eight-speed tiptronic automatic powers the 2.0 TFSI Quattro up the cogs effortlessly. The chassis of the latest Audi Q5 also adds a great dollop of refinement and comfort, thanks to changes to the spring, shock absorber and anti-roll bar settings. The new power steering system gives you a better feel for the road too. The Q5 driving experience is further enhanced when the optional Audi drive select system is specified. Audi drive select lets you vary the operating characteristics of the throttle pedal, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the degree of power steering assistance and the operation of the automatic air conditioning system via four modes, including an efficiency mode. In addition, three optional components can also be
controlled by the Audi drive select system if they are fitted. These include adaptive cruise control, damper control and dynamic steering. During higher speed cornering, it compensates for understeer and oversteer by intervening with slight steering pulses. I’m not saying you’ll ever get sick of driving the Q5, but when you’ve had enough of all that commuting to work and driving the kids to school malarkey, the Audi will thrill you off road. It may look a bit bling but it actually performs well on rugged terrain. Its maximum climbing angle is 31 degrees and its approach and departure angles are each 25 degrees. And you won’t rip anything off the Q5’s underbelly because the vehicle’s ground clearance measures 20 cm. This is truly a motor for everyone – but you’ll have to have a decent bank balance, or a boss who’s nice enough to put this on the company car list to drive one.

Garden Diary - by Angie Barker
The real thing versus plastic! Clients are asking me more and more about artificial grass and whether I think it has a place in the garden. Whilst my initial reaction is always to go for the real thing, there are actually some situations where plastic grass is preferable to real lawn. If your garden is very shady but you still want a green sward to look at, it may be preferable to have artificial lawn because grass will always struggle with limited light. And if your garden is shady because of trees, it means that when the leaves fall you don’t have to keep raking up the leaves for fear of the grass being damaged. Childrens’ play areas are another situation where plastic works well – there is no mud and it stays permanently looking good. It also means you don’t have to keep moving the trampoline around when you are mowing because of course, plastic does not grow so you don’t need to mow!
Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

But I think that is half the problem for me – it just does not look or feel like the real thing. At the risk of sounding like a hippy (believe it or not I was too young to be one back in the day) there really is nothing better than walking on a lawn in bear feet and feeling the grass between your toes. Plastic does not compare. Another consideration which may well make up your mind is the cost. Artificial grass, whilst it has come a long way in recent years, is still much more expensive to lay than turf. A real lawn is also a valuable habitat for wild life. You won’t see Blackbirds on your plastic grass looking for worms or bugs so it is a factor to take into account. So whilst I can see that in our world of busy working lives with the garden having to meet the needs of children and pets, trampolines, football nets, you name it, then plastic grass may have a place but I like to think that most people, like me, still prefer the real thing.
