There are people who will tell you I’m tight as a duck’s posterior. Not true, although I do plead guilty to picking up stray pennies from the floor, seeking out the cut-price almost out-of-date stuff in supermarkets and extracting every last bit of toothpaste from the tube. But nothing (well, almost nothing!) gives me greater pleasure than saving money on my household bills. Which is why I’m delighted to welcome award-winning journalist Martin Lewis as a regular contributor to Local Life! Martin is the brains behind the UK’s biggest money site, www.moneysavingexpert. com which is visited by 13 million users a month. The site focuses on cutting bills without cutting back and has saved me hundreds, if not thousands of pounds over the last decade! This month Martin takes a look on how to save money on your mobile phone – see page 45 and start saving money! With the money you save on your mobile costs, why not try out the food at the Silver Tally in Shevington Moor? The Silver Tally, which is owned by Prospect Brewery, is a proper traditional pub serving excellent, locally-sourced food. See our food review on pages 46-47 for more details. Finally, let me extend a warm welcome to residents of Standish Lower Ground and Crooke Village, who are receiving Local Life for the first time. Thank you to those residents who have constantly asked about delivery in this area, and sorry it’s been so long in coming! Hope you enjoy the read and please, if you’re involved with a community group, school or charity and you want free publicity for your event, please email the details to editorial@locallife247.co.uk. See you next time,

Hilldale Celebrates The village of Hilldale near Parbold was celebrating earlier this month when the Mayor and Mayoress of West Lancashire arrived to officially hand over ownership of the village’s playing fields to Hilldale Parish Council. The Parish Council successfully applied to be one of the 2,012 playing fields preserved into perpetuity by the Queen Elizabeth 2 Fields Challenge, a project run by the Fields in Trust charity. The project was launched by Price William in 2010, when he said: “Playing fields are not a luxury. They are a vital component of any healthy and happy community.

8

The sad truth is that over the years thousands of playing fields have been lost to development, and many more are under threat today”. The village celebrated with a free BBQ and refreshments, organised by the Parish Council, with some help from Asda, and the Mayor unveiled the plaque from Buckingham Palace, which has been set in an impressive stone from Hilldale Quarry at the entrance to the playing fields, which have been renamed Queen Elizabeth 2 Playing Fields. The cost of the stone and stone mason was met by a very generous donation from Hilldale resident Ian Hill (pictured on left with his family), who is the Managing Director of Hills Motors in Skelmersdale. An unexpected visitor on the evening was local resident Roberto Martinez, manager of Wigan Athletic, who called in on the way home from work to organise a kick around on the newly christened fields! Well done to all those on Hilldale Parish Council for their hard work in preserving the playing fields, and also to Ian Hill for marking this occasion in such style.

Christmas Market Yes, it’s only twelve weeks away and the date is nonnegotiable, so you’d better start looking at drawing up that Christmas present list! And to help you tick those presents off the list, we bring you news of a traditional Christmas Market in Shevington on Saturday 10th November. The event is being organised on Church Lane in Shevington by both the PTA at St Bernadette’s Primary School and St Anne’s Church. It’s a full day of activity which, as we go to press, is still in the late planning stages but what we can tell you is that there will be an ice rink and lots of other activities for the children, plus a tombola and raffle. There will be plenty of craft and gift stalls to pick up those aforementioned Christmas gifts, and food stalls too. Admission is free! Those who like a tipple or two will be able to sample some of Prospect’s beers, and mulled wine will also be served. St Anne’s will be cooking breakfasts and lunches and the fun runs on into the evening at St Bernadette’s. So put that date in your diary and do keep your eyes peeled for further details in the local press or around the village, because it is sure to be a fun day!

TREASURE HUNT! Say the word ‘walk’ in our house and you’ll face a barrage of moans, groans and downright hostility from kids seemingly surgically attached to X-Boxes or computers. Forget the fact that we’ve got some glorious countryside on our doorstep. To the young, walking is a complete no-no and is not to be attempted under any circumstances, bar emergencies such as when the Mum and Dad taxi service isn’t running. Mention a thrilling high-tech treasure hunt though, and you might just tempt them off the couch and into the countryside! Born in America in 2000, geocaching is a free outdoor treasure hunt - pinpointing the location of hidden items by using GPS technology. These caches are hidden at millions of locations worldwide and the coordinates for every location are logged on the website www.geocaching. com by the person who hides the cache.

than a Tupperware box containing a few little oddments. When you discover the cache you simply swap an item for something of similar value, sign the log book and then register your find via the app. Amazing as it sounds, cache items often travel all over the world, carried to overseas climes by enthusiastic participants. According to www.geocaching.com, there are approximately 1300 geocaches within a 7.5 mile radius of Standish. Right now, wherever you are, you’re probably less than a ¼ of a mile from a geocache! Each of the caches are named, and often the name is a clue as to its whereabouts. Sometimes you cannot navigate precisely to a point and there may be a river or other obstacle in the way. Some extreme caches are located on the side of a cliff, whilst others are located underwater so they aren’t all easy to trace!

When ‘doing’ a geocache, you simply log onto this website, identify your target cache in your GPS enabled smartphone and off you go. If you have an iPhone, the app to look for is Geocaching (or Geocaching Intro).

Experienced players call the rest of us ‘muggles’, but don’t let this put you off! This is serious fun for all the family and as improbable as it sounds, it’s a highly addictive activity! Soon, you’ll be setting off on geocaching days and being implored to ‘let’s just do one more’. The side effects are; fresh air and exercise, improved family relationships and a wider social circle as you meet other members of the secret geocaching ‘club’!

The fun is in the finding - most caches consist of little more

For more details on geocaching visit www.geocaching.com.

Brass Note There’s nothing like the sound of a good brass band to uplift your spirits, so if you enjoy the sound of brass then do make a note to attend the Harry Latham Memorial Concert which is being held at Park Lane Chapel (next to the Park Hotel) on Wigan Road in Bryn on Saturday 14th October. Harry Latham was the organist at the Chapel for 58 years and this concert is held each year in his memory. The North Ashton Brass Band will be playing at the concert, which begins at 2pm, and light refreshments will be served too.

Blokes Books Football, gadgets and women are the three traditional staples of bloke conversation, usually shared over a beer or two in the local pub, but if Standish Library have their way, then the men in the village will instead be sharing literary views over a cup of tea. The library wants to start what they believe to be the first ‘Men Only’ book club in the borough – all books and refreshments will be provided. If you’re interested in joining the group please contact the library on 01257 400496 or email standish. library@wlct.org.

Wrightington Hall has stood proudly for several centuries, many of us pass by the magnificent hall but do we know much about its history? Many historic buildings are from another time long forgotten, but they have many stories entwined in their history and Wrightington Hall has its own tale to tell. Wrightington Hall is a magnificent grade II listed building set back off Hall Lane in Wrightington. Now a central part of the hospital complex, the hall has a rich history or memories wrapped up in Kings, noble families and rebellion. The original hall was built in 1282 and was home to the Wrightington family until 1658 when Sir Edward Wrightington died. When Sir Edward Wrightington died in 1658, his successor, Hugh Dicconson, erected a tomb for Sir Edward in St Wilfrid’s Church, Standish, which can still be seen today. Two of Hugh Dicconson’s sons, William and Roger, became Roman Catholics and were implicated in a plot to overthrow the government so the hall has seen some excitement of its own! The hall was described as a typical Tudor manor house but fortune hasn’t always favoured the estate when the original hall was partially destroyed by fire in the early part of the 18th century. Records show that it was William who built the present hall and work was finished in 1742, with the addition of the bridge carrying the main road across the fish ponds in 1778. The Hall then passed to the Eccleston family in 1784; the family also owned the Scarisbrick estate near Southport and the Eccleston Hall estate in St Helens. Wrightington Hall continued to pass down through the family and in 1860 a Mrs Clifton of Lytham spent £17,000 altering and restoring the hall. At that time the Wrightington Estate

16

was thought to be made up of 5050 acres mostly in Wrightington, Parbold, Shevington, Eccleston, Heskin, Burscough and Penwortham. The Hall was eventually bought by Lancashire County Council in 1918 for the grand sum of £16,473, with the purpose of turning it into a Tuberculosis hospital. The 226-bed Hospital was built during 1929-1931 at a cost of £129,520; the first patient was a 9-year-old boy from Ashton who was suffering with Tuberculosis of the spine, he was admitted in 1931. However the formal opening of the hospital only took place on the 16th June 1933. Local Life would like to thank Wrightington Hospital for the information taken from Donald Anderson’s Wrightington Hall and the People who lived there and Dave Reddington for supplying the photographs.

Have your Say Wigan Council is asking residents to have their say about its plans for a new Local Council Tax Support Scheme. From April 2013 the Government is abolishing the national Council Tax Benefit scheme and giving the council 10-15% less money to spend on helping low income households to pay their Council Tax. Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Smith, said: “The shortfall in funding that the government provides to the council will be between £2.8 million and £5.6 million. To avoid cutting services we need to make some tough decisions on who will get Council Tax support next year. Inevitably this means many households will get less support and be expected to contribute more towards their Council Tax. For some households this will mean paying some Council Tax when under the current scheme they didn’t have to pay any”. A six week public consultation exercise has started – the survey closes on 31st October 2012 - and residents are

being encouraged to fill in an online survey to give their views. You can get more information about the proposed scheme and complete the survey at www.wigan.gov. uk/counciltaxconsultation. If you don’t have access to the internet and you want to give your views, please call 01942 489967.

10th Anniversary for Chris! Chris Whistlecroft, the local Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Instructor for the Wigan area, is this month celebrating her 10th anniversary of being a Rosemary Conley franchisee. Chris says, “I am so lucky to have a job that I love. I try to help people to achieve their goals, and hopefully change their lives for the better too. All my members encourage each other’s progress and we are there for each other when support is needed. The classes are designed for people of all levels of fitness so everyone who comes to class is able to take part”. “My Rosemary Conley classes offer a unique combination of dietary advice and exercise, and this is central to the life changing successes that members have seen. Everyone is always made to feel welcome and the atmosphere in class is friendly, fun and above all, the expert diet advice, coupled with a safe exercise session, really works. I am fully qualified to teach exercise to music and the sessions have been adapted to suit any ability”. Earlier this year saw the launch of the clubs new style Kardy-O-Fun classes and is a new collaboration between Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Clubs and internationally-renowned fitness presenter, Kardy Laguda. Kardy-O-Fun is an exciting twist on aerobics and fatburning, dance based moves. Chris is particularly excited about this new concept and is finding it is becoming increasingly popular in her classes. She has already secured one of only 4 dates that the master presenter

himself is available to come along and host a special Kardy Party. Chris adds “Having seen Kardy present at our own Road Shows, I can truly say that our Kardy Party will be a fantastic experience. There are lots of my members buying tickets and many other people from outside Wigan are coming along too! The Kardy Party will take place on Friday 2nd November at the Robin Park Sports Centre, Loire Drive, Newtown from 1-4pm. The event is open to non-members also, so if you’ve been thinking of how this revolutionary concept can make your diet and fitness exercise regime more fun come along and try it!” Tickets for the Kardy Party are £10 and can be purchased by contacting Chris on 01942 824557, mobile 07968 608861, email christine.whistlecroft@ rosemaryconley.com. Join one of Chris’ classes (see details opposite) with the free membership offer and purchase a ticket for the Kardy Party for half-price (£5!).

You may have noticed this blue and yellow logo popping up on community notice boards recently, but what is the U3A and is it something that would interest you? U3A stands for University of the Third Age and despite the high falutin title, it’s not an academic group; it’s a voluntary group that runs lots of activity courses for those over 50’s no longer in full time employment. It’s a global organisation with local branches in your area; the aim of the U3A is to provide opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun! The Wigan U3A and Parbold, Newburgh & District U3A groups have developed into dynamic, lively and fastgrowing organisations. The Wigan Group meets every Tuesday during term time between 2-4pm at Standish Community Centre on Moody Street. The Parbold & Newburgh group holds a fortnightly meeting on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month between 1-3pm at Parbold Village Hall on the Green. Even though there are a lot of activities and meetings, there’s no need to join in everything that goes on; in

fact you’d be pretty exhausted if you did! Members can choose which activity to join; some just choose a single activity, others are busy with U3A activities every day of the week. It’s completely up to you how much time or how little time you spend with the U3A gang. We have compiled a list of a small selection of the groups and events that are available to you, just to give you a taste of what is on offer. The list of activities is growing all the time, as membership increases.

Group List: Aerobics, Art Appreciation, Badminton, Ballroom Dancing, Bird Watching, Digital Photography, Family History, Luncheon Group, Reading Group, Singing for Fun, Tai Chi, Theatre Trips, Walking and Yoga. If you would like more information about the groups in your area or would like to enquire about membership then please telephone the Wigan group on 01942 489489 or the Parbold group on 01257 400254 or browse the website at www.u3a.org.uk

Floral Art If you’re keen to develop your arty side and astonish your family and friends with some handmade seasonal floral arrangements, then you’ll be interested to hear that the Wigan Floral Art Club have been in touch with us to offer an open invitation to readers to attend their monthly get-togethers. The club meets on the third Wednesday of every month at St Michael’s Hall in Shaw Street in Swinley from 7.15pm to 9.30 pm, and have a NAFAS guest demonstrator making flower arrangements at each meeting. At the end of the evening the flower arrangements are raffled off and some lucky people in the audience go home very happy! The next meeting is on Wednesday 17th October: for further details please ring Mrs Halliwell on 07709 082646.

Ladies Lunch Would you like to join an informal ladies friendship group? The waiting list for the Wigan & District Women’s Lecture Luncheon Club is now open to new membership applications. The club has been in existence since 1931 when a small group of women started to meet on a monthly basis in each other’s homes and the group has been growing ever since. In 2011, they celebrated their 80th anniversary with a membership of 160 ladies and held a celebratory lunch attended by the Mayor of Wigan. They now meet at the DW Stadium on the first Thursday of each month, October to May and at each event, they enjoy a two course sit-down lunch followed by a guest speaker. Past speakers have included Sir Bernard Ingham, Lady Anne Foley, TV’s Green Goddess - Diana Moran, Antiques Roadshow Specialist- David Battie and The Calendar Girls. If you’d like to join the club or you’d like further details, please contact Pauline Dalton (Membership Secretary) on 01942 725395.

Festive Delights Parbold and District Flower Club are holding a Christmas Gala Evening on Tuesday 20th November at Parbold Village Hall on The Green in Parbold at 7pm with the fantastic Tony Brown titled ‘Festive Delights’. Tickets are just £8 including a glass of wine or a soft drink. Everyone is welcome but tickets usually sell quickly so do bag yours quickly. So if you’d like to book your ticket please either come along to one demonstration on 10th October (1.30pm-4pm at the Village Hall) or call Sheila Mitchell 01257 464783.

Roasted Pumpkin Soup Ingredients

medium cloves garlic, unpeeled • 3-5 (2lbs) pumpkin, peeled and deseeded • 1kg oil • Olive onion, finely chopped • 11/2large teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • Salt and pepper, taste • 1 litre (1 3/4 pints)tovegetable • Cream, for serving (optional) or chicken stock • Freshly grated nutmeg, or chilli flakes for • serving (optional)

Method Preheat oven to 190C / Gas mark 5. Chop the pumpkin into even-sized chunks (about 5cm / 2 inches across). Place the pumpkin with the unpeeled garlic cloves in a roasting tin. Drizzle with a little oil and toss to coat the pieces. Bake in the oven. Check after 20 minutes and remove the garlic at that point and set it aside. Roast the pumpkin until it’s soft and tender. Be careful not to burn it. Heat a teaspoon of oil in large (at least 2.7 litre capacity) saucepan over medium heat. Add onion, nutmeg, cumin, salt and pepper. Fry gently, stirring, until the onion is just softened slightly. Add the roasted pumpkin and stock and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until onion is completely soft and the stock has reduced a little. The more the stock reduces, the thicker the soup will be and the more concentrated the flavour. Season to taste. Peel the roasted garlic and add it to the soup. Remove from the heat and allow to cool for about half an hour before pureeing in batches in a blender. Serve the soup hot with cream and/or grated nutmeg/ chilli flakes if preferred.

Who Cares for the Carers? Wigan and Leigh Carers Centre is a purpose-built facility based in Frederick Street in Hindley, and designed to provide help and support to Wigan’s army of carers. Open 5 days a week between 9.00am and 5.00pm, the Carers Centre is a registered charity that offers a wide range of services and support to help assist and inform the Borough’s estimated 46,000 carers.

Are you a carer?

A carer is anybody who looks after a relative, partner, neighbour or friend. Whether the person cared for needs help due to ill health, old age, mental illness or substance abuse, the Carers Centre do not discriminate, and provides the same wide range of services for all. To be classed as a carer you don’t necessarily have to live with the person you care for, or be the only one offering care. If this describes you or somebody you know, then Carers Centre is here for you. All services are free to carers so whether you require benefit advice, help into education or employment, or a little pampering with an aromatherapy session, don’t wait until your caring responsibilities get you down, give the Centre a call or drop in and see what they have to offer. Importantly, lots of carers do not see themselves as carers, with many struggling to find the help they need. The Carers Centre aims to make sure that this crucial support is available and ensure that carers are given as much assistance as possible with their own particular needs or situation. The Wigan and Leigh Carers Centre are there to help, support and serve all carers from each of Wigan Borough’s 10 Townships. Even if you live some distance from the centre, the centre is there for you so just pick up the phone. Outreach information services are provided

at a number of venues throughout the Borough as well as podiatry treatments in Ashton, Leigh, Atherton and Shevington (these are in addition to those provided at the centre). Wigan and Leigh Carers Centre, seeking to become “a recognised centre of excellence in the provision of information, training and support, provided for carers to improve the carer’s quality of life and to give all carers a voice”. Wigan and Leigh Carers Centre is fully accessible for visitors with disabilities and can be found at 3-5 Frederick Street, Hindley, Wigan, WN2 3BD. Tel: 01942 705959. Threads for the Soul Let’s face it, when you’re mooching about town trying to pick out your latest outfit from the haze of mass produced offerings, you’ve never bothered to check where your clothes are made! We all want to look our best but at what cost? Is that gorgeous new top really worth the exploitation of millions of children around the world - who work 12 hours a day, in unsafe conditions to bring you your fashion-must-have? I’m guessing the honest answer is no! With shoppers becoming more savvy about ethical fashion, we’ve found one of the good guys and they are right on your doorstep. Mother and daughter duo Joan Nield and Amy Smith recently opened the doors to their ethical store on Preston Road, Standish and are spreading their eco-friendly message to the local community. Dos Mundos is a family business that has evolved over the course of seven years, the first shop in Scotland and now a second in Standish. Joan told Local life, “We both live in Standish and we wanted to open Dos Mundos to give customers something different and something accountable. In a society where we buy on a whim and where inexpensive clothing is flooding the market, we need to take responsibility for our buying habits.” The feel good vibe doesn’t stop there though Joan is also busy raising awareness in the community about the importance of ethically sourced goods; she is presenting the message to young and old alike – from the Standish Beavers and Rainbow groups to preparing fashion shows for local groups. Now don’t worry this is not some hippy fad - it is a way of life - and one that ensures that you can

help the environment without sacrificing quality. Goods on offer are made from sustainable resources but quality is always guaranteed, which mean your new clothes will last and last! Whether you’re looking for some fashion forward outfits, a unique handmade gift or some fair-trade chocolate – Dos Mundos is your one stop shop. Stocking organic clothing from labels such as Braintree, Frugi, Namaste, Gringo and Little Green Radicals; you can rest assured that your hardearned cash is going to the people who need it the most! The shop stocks a wide range of children’s clothes and lines for women and men too – with the autumn stock due any day now! You can also stock up on handmade soaps, cards, giftware and one off stationery pieces. Joan added, “We buy from companies that give a fair price to the people making the products and we believe that through these channels, trade can be made fair to all the people in the supply chain.” There is definitely more to Dos Mundos than its quirky style – Joan and Amy are fashion- conscious with a conscience, so if you would like to buy your clothing and gifts without compromise call in for some guilt-free browsing. Joan is also looking out for any local schools that would like to become a fair-trade school – if you are interested please call 01257 369719 or pop into the shop for a chat.

Prosper on Top Prosper IFA Ltd, the Standish-based independent financial advisors are celebrating after reaching the prestigious Chartered Financial Planners benchmark. To be awarded ‘Chartered Status’ is an exclusive title only awarded to firms which meet rigorous criteria relating to professionalism and capability. All Chartered Financial Planners commit to the Code of Ethics from the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), which re-enforces the highest standards of professional practice in their business dealings. Prosper IFA Ltd specialise in investment, pensions and estate planning advice to the over 50s and currently hold more than £75million of funds under advice on behalf of their investment and pension clients. David Barton, the Managing Director of Prosper IFA Ltd and Local Life’s Money and Investment columnist, says that securing Chartered Financial Planners status is a landmark for the company. “We have always taken pride in the fact that we are an ‘advice’ as opposed to a ‘sales driven’ business. This coupled with our client for life philosophy has helped us build a client-centric business which has grown quickly since we began trading in 2003”.

36

Prosper IFA Ltd is the first and only IFA firm in Wigan to be awarded this title. Fewer than 3% of firms in the UK have achieved this status which makes the award all the more special for David and his team.

There – I’ve said it! All those glossy colour Sunday supplements extolling the virtues of having a conservatory; extra family space to relax in the sunshine without actually braving the outside elements are just an overblown sales campaign to sell conservatories. Whilst they are high on our wish list when it comes to improving our homes; conservatories rarely live up to expectations. A conservatory is supposed to be a calm and tranquil space, one that lets us linger over the Sunday papers without having to put on an extra layer or jumping up to retrieve the lifestyle section from the rose bushes. In reality you probably have a love hate relationship with what can only be described as your glass box. They overheat in the summer and winter temperatures rival the North Pole during the winter months; all in all you start to feel like you haven’t benefited from the extra room you paid for. In fact, research shows that, in the British climate, a conservatory is unlikely to provide more than two hours of comfortable temperatures per day.

the problems associated with plastic ceilings. Freedom has already helped people save on their energy bills and given them a room that they can use 365 days of the year. The process does not alter the external appearance of your roof or remove any part of your conservatory causing a minimal amount of disruption to your home and because the work is internal there is no need for any planning permission. Paul says “Following our three-day installation you will no longer need to look at an ugly plastic roof, you will have a plastered and painted ceiling with a bespoke lighting and audio package of your choice. Before we plasterboard we lag the plastic roof with insulation that helps to deflect heat away and keeps heat in and the material we use meets all the current building regulations and fire certificates.” Paul is dedicated to designing new Conservatory concepts and is constantly looking at other ways of improving your Conservatory living. In a short space of time his team have now created a Plasma TV wall, which will carry your TV and give you extra floor space; cables can be hidden were possible

Well, before you seal those French doors shut for good we’d like to tell you about a local company who might just have the answer to all your conservatory woes. Freedom Conservatory Roof Conversions promise to give you back the extra room you have always dreamt about. With their innovative ceiling modifications they can make your conservatory up to 90% warmer in the winter and up to 75% cooler in the summer! After suffering with the same problems in his own conservatory, the Billingebased owner of Freedom Conservatory Roof Conversions Paul Stubbs came up with a revolutionary idea to combat

and they can fit full surround sound cinema systems using ceiling speakers and mood lighting. Paul added, “We have also designed a Wood Burner that can be safely vented through either our roof conversion or existing polycarbonate; this will not only heat your conservatory but save you money on energy especially in the winter months. All the burners are DEFRA approved and fitted by approved tradesman.”

So if you would like to claim back the use of your conservatory and possibly save on your energy bills, call the team now on 08456 860542 for more details. Freedom did our porch and conservatory and we now have balanced heat throughout the down stairs and I am saving £15.00 per week alone on Gas. For those of you who have answered yes to one or more of these questions I would suggest that you read on. As a result of the turmoil experienced since 2008 in the investment markets, I believe that the focus has very much sharpened on three things for investors. 1.

Service

2.

Risk

3.

Fund Performance

The majority of our new investment clients have told us that they had become totally frustrated with

the volume of paperwork they were receiving from their investment providers and that they had lost track of where they were up to with regards to their portfolios. They had lost touch with their previous advisers and when I asked them about the risk profile and the performance of their underlying investments, without exception the response was very much a scratch of the head or “I don’t really know”.

they should be doing with their investments. If this sound like you and you need help to make managing your money a little easier please do not hesitate to give us a call. If you invest in the stock market the value of your investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount invested.

This is really quite scary. Your money is important, it needs to be looked after and managed sensibly. I am pleased to say that all of these clients now know exactly what their investment risk levels are, where their money is invested, and more importantly how it is performing. In addition, for the majority, they can now obtain valuation details of all of their investments by either making one phone call or better still (for the techies amongst you) pressing a button on their home computer. Because of the fragile recovery in the economy the bad news for savers is that interest rates are likely to remain low for some time to come and consequently bank accounts remain very poor value for the majority of investors. In today’s fast changing economic / investment environment it is vital that investors keep abreast of the latest developments and that they have access to unbiased investment expertise at a competitive price. As market opportunities come and go it is imperative that portfolios are correctly positioned to either seize the opportunities or to mitigate the potential threats. Too many investors adopt a passive stance and consequently remain in funds or sectors that have long since fallen out of favour. In my experience time and access to the right information can be a constant headache for the majority of investors. Most people would prefer to spend time on hobbies, holidays and with family rather than pouring over financial information and worrying about what

Curious Objects

Cross Street in Standish has been overrun by curious objects, all in the name of an art exhibition hosted by artists Paula Fenwick and Jane Fairhurst. Paula and Jane’s Emporium of Curious Objects opens next Friday (1st October) and runs through to 1st December.

The exhibition, which is being held in the Standish Centre, celebrates the seemingly arbitrary nature of the collections of objects found in the cabinets of curiosities of the eras of the Renaissance and Enlightenment. Paula and Jane, who are both avid collectors of stuff, want to share something of their collections and their artwork, alongside invited artists’ work, to all who’d like to come and see it. Like a museum of curiosities or an old fashioned shop, their Emporium of Curious Objects will be a source of wonderment for all ages; a mix of the fascinating and the curious, the strange and the uncanny, the real and the imagined, the freaky and the downright funny. The emporium will be open to the public from 12 to 4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, or by appointment, from 5th October to 1st December 2012. A preview evening will be held on 4th October from 7 to 9pm, all will be welcome. School visits will be welcome and available by appointment. For children it will be a great introduction to the world of collecting and museums; a chance to explore familiar and unfamiliar artefacts and objects, and inspire their imagination through an encounter with real and fictional worlds.

CMA Accountancy Guide to Credit Control CMA is a firm of Chartered Management Accountants based in Appley Bridge. We provide the usual services such as annual accounts and tax returns etc but we also work with our clients on a deeper level and look behind the numbers to help them grow their businesses to give them the competitive edge to stay ahead of their competitors. This month we are looking at ways to manage your customers so that they pay you on time. Cashflow is the lifeblood of any business. All profitable businesses will struggle without positive cashflow. Where margins are tight it is vital that you collect your payments when they are due. Many businesses go bust every year simply because they are owed money. Systematic, well planned credit control practices must be put in place before your start giving credit terms to customers. The following tips can help your stay in the black: 1 Set out your terms and conditions – This is your opportunity to clearly state when payment is due and what will happen if payment is not received 2 Get to know your customer – It’s vital you know the background of the person you’re working with. This information can help you decide what credit limit to set, or whether to stay away from certain businesses altogether. Providers such as Creditsafe or Experian can help you get this information. 3 Check references – There is no better way to get a sense of character than by word of mouth. Business associates will be pleased to sing the praises of good contacts. 4 Invoice on a timely basis – Credit control starts with the invoice. Send it out promptly, accurately and to the right person! 5 Payment chasing should be a tight operation – Use a good system such as Sage or Xero to send reminders when payment is due. Be sure to make a telephone call or send a letter as soon as an invoice becomes due.

7 Flexible payment methods – Modern businesses should offer a range of payment types. Options include credit / debit card payments, paypal, and other website payment methods. There may be a small charge to pay but the payment could be received earlier. These are just a few tips that we give to clients to help them stay on top of their cashflow. Every business is different and some methods work better than others depending on your circumstances. Please contact us to discuss any specific issues you may have with collecting money.

Tax Tips of the Month • File your self-assessment return on time - HMRC have introduced a new penalty structure this year, which will mean that a tax return that is over six months late will incur a minimum penalty of £1,300! • Consider incorporating your business - If you are currently running a small unincorporated business there may be a substantial tax saving available on converting to a Limited Company.

If you would like to find out more about any of the issues discussed in this article CMA offers a free initial consultation, either at our office or yours, at a time to suit you. If you would like to see how we can help please get in touch. Contact Details Chris Alcock ACMA CMA Accountancy 39 Skull House Lane, Appley Bridge, Wigan, WN6 9DR Tel: 01257 255521 Email info@handsonaccounting.co.uk www.handsonaccounting.co.uk

6 Employ an experienced credit controller – If you have the resources, employ a credit controller, or outsource to a company with expertise. Don’t leave it to the sales team.

Saving Money with Martin Lewis

Take a look at your mobile. Some view it as a shiny little pocket rocket of technology that acts as a mini-computer, others think it’s just a phone. The problem is that too few people see it as a household bill that costs £100s a year, which can often be done for a fraction of the cost.

4. Don’t flog mobiles to any old site

So let’s see if we can ring down the changes…

5. Free wi-fi with your coffee, burger or beer

1. Find the right tariff Don’t focus on the handset, the key is the tariff – the amount you pay for minutes, texts and data. If you regularly go above your free minutes allowance, you’re overpaying each month for the extra you use. Try www.billmonitor.com to find the right tariff for you, and to include handset choice look at www. mobilephonechecker.co.uk or www.moneysupermarket. com. If you’re after an iPhone, use the www.mse.me/ iphone tool to find the right tariff.

2. “Threatened to leave, got 500 minutes, unlimited texts & data for £5 per month.” As this quote shows, anyone near the end of their contract is holstering a great weapon in the form of consumer loyalty. Ask for a major reduction and if you don’t get it, say you’re considering leaving. You’ll be put through to ‘disconnections’, which has much more discretion to keep you. Full tips on how to play this at www.mse.me/mobilehaggle. Of the site users who’ve tried to haggle, 76% succeeded with Vodafone, 68% with T-Mobile, 70% with Orange and 71% with O2.

No one can have failed to see the adverts from the companies buying old mobiles. There can be huge variations in the amount these sites pay for each handset. The www.mobilevaluer.com tool compares 18 different sites and the differences can be startling! For example, the price for a Blackberry 9700 Bold ranges from £40 to £87. Of course, while using these sites is the simple option, you can often get a better return on eBay.

If you’re out and about, don’t use up your mobile’s inclusive data unnecessarily – it may later push you over your data limit. Big chains like McDonald’s, Starbucks and Wetherspoons all offer free wi-fi, as do many smaller shops.

6. Call freephone numbers for free from your mobile Dial a freephone number and it can bizarrely cost up to 33p/minute from your mobile – yet there is a trick to beat this so you can call for free. The www.0800buster. com website will give you a special number to dial before calling the freephone number, which then effectively lets you call it as a normal geographic phone number. So if you’ve got free minutes, it’ll actually be free.

7. Are you paying 35p per minute to pick up your voicemail? There’s a nasty catch to voicemail. Some tariffs charge a ghastly 35p/minute for calling it if you’ve gone beyond your tariff, and it can lead to mammoth bills. If you often go over, it’s worth checking your voicemail costs – and even switching it off for that period if you have to.

3. Smartphone insurance doesn’t have to be costly

Martin Lewis

Mobiles no longer just make calls. They’re our diaries, contact books, games machines and more. Insurers play on this fear with hefty prices and unnecessary cover, but you can get cheap mobile, smartphone and iPhone insurance for £5 per month. Before you do it though, check if your home insurance or bank account covers your mobile. If not, try the Gadget Insurance section at www.insureandgo.com – prices are around £6 a month and cover limits are high enough for smartphones (£500).

Each month, Martin will be writing a feature for Local Life - advising our readers how to save thousands of pounds every year! Don’t miss it!

Warm-Hearted When an average of 52 pubs a week are closing across the UK, it takes someone extremely brave (or someone extremely stupid!) to plough hundreds of thousands of pounds into a pub venture. Step forward big-pocketed Blackburn brewing giant Thwaites, assisted by Standish microbrewery Prospect, who recently opened The Silver Tally (formerly the Foresters Arms) in Shevington Moor.

on Bradley Hall last year and on the way has picked up numerous awards for the quality of its ales. But how good is the food?

We stepped into The Silver Tally to a warm welcome on a rainy September night with a distinct Autumnal chill. Even without the five cask ales on the bar, there’s a real beer theme going on, with hops decorating the archways, a beer barrel table and numerous Prospect Brewery awards adorning the walls. The stone floor and cubicles give the Silver Tally a quaint and cosy feel, and the pictures of old Wigan on the walls add to the welcoming feel of the place. The menu was somewhat limited – this isn’t a restaurant with hundreds of dishes to choose from - but there’s something for everyone here. We picked out our starters; Leek and Potato Soup and Creamy Mushrooms. Within a few minutes, plates arrived with big chunks of bread and butter, followed shortly afterwards by our starters. The soup was thick, creamy and heart-warming; a wellseasoned dish which was a perfect choice! A generous portion of this delicious soup went down fairly quickly and the bread accompanying it was very tasty too. Generous portions are obviously the norm at the Silver Tally; the creamy mushrooms were as plentiful as they were enjoyable. Presented in a ramekin dish and accompanied by a crisp salad, every last drop of this dish was eaten and then the remains were scraped away with some more of that chunky bread! We sat back and drank in the atmosphere (and the ale!) whilst we waited for our main course to arrive. Make no mistake; this is a proper pub. No juke box, no infernal games machines and no satellite sports coverage either - just fine ales, a friendly atmosphere and, if our starters are anything to go by, great food too!

The Silver Tally (also the name of the best-selling Prospect ale) is what miners were given when they had worked an overtime shift to exchange for a meal at the end of their labours. And, whilst a hard day at the Local Life office is no match for even an easy day on the coalface, we felt we deserved a trip up to Silver Tally to try out the food that the locals have been raving about.

My dining partner veered off from her usual favourites when she chose a Lancashire Cheese and Onion Pie for a main course, served with homemade chips and mushy peas. The strongly flavoured cheese was supplied by Dewlar’s of Garstang, contrasted superbly with the little chunks of freshly cooked onions, and was topped with a deliciously light short crust pastry. The home-made chips were absolutely delectable, and the tasty mushy peas were perfect – not too wet, not too dry – just perfect!

To exist and thrive in today’s economic climate; a pub has to serve good ale and good food at the right prices. Prospect’s pedigree on the good ale front is well documented; the brewery was founded in a garage at Patsy Slevin’s house on Wigan Road in Standish in 2007, moved into the old Heinz pudding shop building

My main course was a real local dish – a homemade Steak and Nutty Slack Pie with mashed potato and mushy peas. The steak - that oh so tender steak - was from Greaves Butchers in Up Holland and it was gently braised in Prospect’s own Nutty Slack. The shortcrust pastry the combination was wrapped in must be amongst the finest

Folk

I’ve tasted, and the thick beefy gravy was definitely the lick-the-plate-clean variety! The mashed potatoes were divine too, and a big dollop of mushy peas rounded off the dish very nicely indeed. I was told afterwards that this is the pub’s most popular dish – this surprised me about as much as discovering that Jordan sleeps on her back! And then to pudding? Actually, no, we just couldn’t manage it! The portions at the Silver Tally were generous, without being silly, and it had been a long tiring day so we passed on the puddings and vowed to call another day to sample a selection of puddings that included some real old fashioned favourites! The Silver Tally will tick an awful lot of boxes for you – excellent food, great value, locally-sourced, a fantastic selection of real ale and a big warm-hearted welcome. Food is served at the Silver Tally from 12-2pm & 5-8pm Monday-Thursday, and from 12pm-8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Silver Tally Shevington Moor, Standish, WN6 0SQ 01257 421337

Halsall & Clieves Hills

Thousands of cars a week whizz through Aughton on the A59 and Halsall on the A5147, and yet, in the area between these two busy roads, lies the very essence of England; Wonderful views, slow single track lanes, a leisurely canal, working farms, beautiful houses and a couple of country pubs. Try this five mile walk on a Sunday and you’ll be disturbed only by the occasional tractor or a bunch of lycra-clad Wiggins-wannabes whizzing by! Ship Inn – Saracen’s Head Park near the Ship Inn, which is on Rosemary Lane, just off the main road from Crosby to Southport near Haskayne. Take a short cut through the beer garden and then turn left down the canal, immediately passing under the Ship bridge. If you’ve brought your camera along, you’ll instantly be presented with a few photoopportunities as there are lots of birds and colourful barges at this point. You’ll follow the canal towpath for 1¼ miles. Clieves Hills will soon appear in the distance to your right, whilst the spire of St Cuthbert’s Church in Halsall

50

dominates the views on the left. There is a tall wall running along the left hand side of the canal which gives you quite a bit of shade on a hot day and along this wall are plentiful blackberries growing, so do take along a pot if you fancy a blackberry pie for tea! Pass under bridges 23 (Flax Lane) and 24 (Hill Bridge) heading north-east. You’ll reach the Saracen’s Head at the next bridge, a place that is highly praised for the quality of its food and its real ales. Sadly, I had just had a full bowl of porridge and a banana for breakfast, so I resisted the temptation to stay awhile. At this point, you leave the canal, cross the bridge in the direction of the Saracen’s Head and continue walking down Summerwood Lane. But before you set off in this direction, do stop awhile at the Halsall Navvy statue, which is diagonally opposite the Saracen’s Head.

Saracen’s Head – Clieves Hill You’ll walk 500 yards away from Halsall down Summerwood Lane, and you’ll then need to take a right turn down Narrow Lane. You’ll follow this country lane through a hamlet called Bangor’s Green. Just after Tristram’s Farm the road forks to the right and becomes Halsall Lane; carry on up the left fork in the same direction as previously (signposted Narrow Lane Clieves Hills). Going up a slight incline, you’ll pass Aughton Cliffs Farm and Acorn Cattery, both on the left.

Once you pass Narrow Lane farm on the left, turn directly left on the ‘s’ bend down Cut Lane and follow a sharp right hand bend within 30 yards of the junction. Follow the telegraph poles up this road for 300 yards. One you reach a sharp left hand bend you’ll see a public footpath symbol on one of the poles. Come off the road at that point and head uphill on the right hand perimeter of a field in the general direction of a wind turbine. Just at the top of the hill the tracks fork, head straight on up towards the distinctive tower of Clieves Hills House and follow the tracks to the right of the house and round the top of the field, exiting the field at the top right hand corner.

Clieves Hill – Ship Inn Once you exit the field, turn left for about 50 yards and then turn right down Shepherds Lane for 800 yards. You’ll pass some pretty nice Mediterranean style houses at this point, before you come to a fine view over the Lancashire coast. Carry on walking down the hill; do help yourself to some blackberries on the way, I did leave a few for you! You’ll pass Segars Farm, Shepherds Farm and when you reach Clieves Farm, Shepherds Lane then becomes Halsall Lane, so turn left down Dicconsons Lane. Go past Dicconsons Farm on the right and 180 yards later on a gentle left hand bend you’ll come across a public footpath sign taking you across the field. Unfortunately, our plans were thwarted at this point

The Halsall Navvy Back in the eighteenth century, the appalling state of transportation in this country was seen as a key constraint on Britain’s economic development. Roads were poor, and sometimes impassable in winter, while navigable rivers were few. John Hustler and other Bradford businessmen wanted a cheaper way to transport coal and limestone, and the outcome of their efforts was the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Act of 1770, which resulted in the construction of the first major canal in Great Britain. Work on the canal began in Halsall, and the very first sod was turned by Colonel Mordaunt in November 1770. At one point 518 navigators (later called navvies) were employed on the project at any one time. Many of these navvies were Scottish and had assisted the main engineer Robert Whitworth on the much smaller Forth and Clyde Canal. Navvies were often exploited by innkeepers and detested by locals, but overcame a tough physical daily existence to perform an engineering feat that helped bring the industrial revolution to the North West. The stone sculpture of the Halsall Navvy, created by Thompson Dagnall, was unveiled on the canal bank in Halsall in 2006.

your pets Why bother vaccinating your pet? It is through rigorous immunisation programmes that the world has been able to get rid of diseases such as smallpox and polio. But, this status only works if children continue to be immunised against these infections. Recent emergence of measles and mumps in children whose parents who have held back from getting them immunised, is a resounding reminder of the importance of immunisation in humans. Though we are fortunate to have vastly controlled many infectious diseases in dogs and cats through vaccinations, we are unlikely to ever be able to eradicate them. Therefore, lowering guard on vaccinations in our pet dogs and cats can lead to more serious consequences of widespread disease outbreaks. Some pet owners claim that their pets have stayed healthy without vaccination, but their pets are merely benefiting from the vast majority of pet owners who responsibly vaccinate their pets on a regular basis, thereby minimising the prevalence of infection in the environment. Contradictory information on the internet causes a lot of confusion. Some owners believe that repeated vaccination in dogs and cats can cause illness, but this information is not validated by scientific data and should be ignored.

56

Looking back at tens of thousands of vaccinations, I have carried out over the years, other than a few odd incidents of reversible instant reactions; I have never come across any adverse effects of vaccinations in dogs and cats. The biological clock of our pets is known to tick roughly seven times faster compared to humans. By the time a dog or a cat turns up for the annual booster vaccination, it is not one but seven years gone by. With time the immunity against infections wanes at variable rates. The outcome of exposure to infection may then well depend on the dose of infection. There is a potential for pets to pick up overwhelming doses of infection from the environment. As animals age, like humans, their immune system becomes weaker, so older animals, just like elderly people, need more protections to stay healthy. The modern vaccinations can protect dogs against as many as 8-10 infectious agents, most of them almost untreatable viral infections. Similarly cats can be protected against at least five untreatable infections and rabbits against two deadly diseases. Leaving aside the science behind vaccinations, it makes sense to vaccinate and protect pets rather than to leave them exposed to infections that may prove expensive to treat or may be untreatable. For more information about animal vaccines, please call me on 01257 463142.

Spruce up your Sills! Window Sills can be the bane of your life; all too often they can spoil the appearance of a beautifully kept home – grubby marks, discolouring and mould are all too common a problem. But given the time and attention not only can your window sills increase the kerb appeal of your home, they can also prevent water damage around the windows.

Before

After

If you’ve struggled with unsightly window sills you’ll know even the toughest amount of elbow grease won’t bring them back to their original state – harsh chemicals can damage the sill and conventional cleaners just won’t do the job. Don’t despair because we would like to introduce you to a local company that can restore your grubby sills to their former glory. Homesill UK now has a local franchise in your area and they have combined the very latest design manufacturing and technology to bring you a long lasting protection for your exterior window sills. Not only will your new window sills be stylish they will also make regular maintenance a thing of the past – once in place all that is required to keep your sills in pristine condition is a simple clean with a damp cloth. Homesill franchisee Jeff Harrison said, “The reason for staining and engrained dirt in your windowsills is because they are made of a softer material than the window. With our Homesill system we can remove lumps of unsightly weathered silicone and top your old sill with a new durable over sill, keeping your existing sill in place.”

The Homesill products offer an ideal hard-wearing surface for today’s modern home and you can have your choice of styles and colours, which enables you to choose contemporary or traditional sills to complement your exterior décor. Jeff can also help you with ideas and products for your interior sills as well. Jeff added, “Traditionally homes had sills of different colours that matched doors and garage doors. If you look around you will see that house builders are changing the image of their new builds to more traditional appearances – black and white is such a classic look. Although if you would like to keep your sills matched with your window frames we can achieve this for you too.” There is a wide range of products to choose from you can have virtually any colour sill with wood grained effects, wood finishes such as oak and for the more adventurous customers you can even plump for carbon fibre and metal checker plate sills with a finish of your choice. Prices start from as little as £39 per sill - this typically includes one metre sill with two end caps fully installed by experienced fitters. Transform the appearance of your home with the Homesill makeover and make those discoloured sills a thing of the past!

The best laid plans… This month I thought I would report back on our trip to Southport Flower Show back in August - incidentally the oldest independent flower show in the country. We decided to go on the Friday and I had a plan (as Hubby would tell you I always have a plan!) We would get there early and make for the show gardens before it got busy, then visit the plant stalls to shop for my list of plants, then eating and drinking followed by a leisurely mooch around the rest of the show. Unfortunately my plans went awry when we took a wrong turn after the show gardens and ended up in the new Food Hall. What a treat it was. We emerged some time later laden with four large bottles of Yorkshire Punch (a non-alcoholic herbal drink which is supposed to aid a good nights sleep), several cheeses (the Snowdonia Cheese Company’s ‘Pickle Power’ and ‘Green Thunder’ are lovely though not for the faint hearted containing garlic and chilli) and all manner of other assorted goodies. Then it started to rain heavily. I suddenly realised that with umbrella in hand and laden down with several shopping bags we were not going to be able to carry any plants. I sulked all the way home on the train. I woke up a day later to Hubby saying “do you fancy a trip to Southport?” Yes, I actually paid another £21 to get into the show

Agastache - ‘Golden Jubilee’

and buy the plants on my shopping list. They included two delightful grasses - Agrostis or Cloud Grass and Panicum ‘Heavy Metal’. A lovely Agastache - ‘Golden Jubilee’, Gaura ‘Gambit Rose’, and a couple of Thalictrums - to mention a few. These are all beautiful late summer bloomers and if you want to check them out for yourself type the Latin name into Google and you will see pictures of them. Thanks Hubby - you do have a lot to put up with - I promise only one trip to Southport Flower Show next year. By the way, with regard to the Yorkshire Punch - it really does work. MAKING THE CONNEXION Citroen’s improved C1 citycar offers plenty of value. Jonathan Crouch reports The first production car on UK roads resulting from an app created in collaboration with Facebook is Citroen’s C1 Connexion special edition. More than 24,000 Facebook users were invited to visit a virtual ‘factory floor’ to choose what the model should look like and what features it should have - and the Connexion is the result. But is it any good? Small where it matters and big where it counts, this is a runabout perfectly adapted to life on the urban street. Tight spaces? No problem. Tricky manoeuvres? Easy. Low rate finance? Of course. With around 70 mpg to the gallon, the enviro-conscious 103g/km CO2 return means not only that Friends of the Earth will thank you, but that you’ll get free road tax for the first year of ownership and pay just £20 per year thereafter. All in all, there’s not much not to like.

62

Like all C1 buyers, purchasers of this Connexion model get only one engine choice, a frugal 68bhp 1.0i petrol unit. There’s also a refreshing lack of gimmicks and nonsense that can plague some small cars. With this Citroen, you just get a citycar that’s small, manoeuvrable, easy to see out of and very simple to operate. On the road, the petrol unit feels willing and revvy and well suited to the C1’s up and at ‘em personality. The steering takes some getting used to but it doesn’t require much effort to twirl the car into a parking space. It’s almost comical how little car there is behind the rear seats and when reversing into a parking bay, it’s worth remembering that you can afford to leave yourself some breathing room at the back. Citroen have been regaining their reputation for bold and exciting interiors of late and the C1 continues that trend. Headroom inside the car isn’t at all bad and the big glass area up front gives an airy feel to the cabin. The rear of the three-door car is notably more claustrophobic and is really only suitable for kids and short journeys. Rear knee-room in the five door car is little better but the boot space is the same, whether you choose the three or the five-door.

This special edition package costs from around £9,500, with a £350 premium if you want five rather than three doors. This includes ABS and EBD braking, variable power assisted steering, driver’s, front passenger’s & front lateral airbags, daytimerunning LEDs, air conditioning and front electric windows. To this tally, the Connexion package adds 14” ‘Rift’ alloy wheels, Caldera Black metallic paint, dark tinted rear windows and a ‘Connexion Exterior Look Pack’ including Scarlet Red paint for the door mirrors, door handles & rear number plate surround. Buyers also get the same Scarlet Red colour on the rev counter, the speedometer, the air vents, the gear lever, the centre console, the interior door & electric window button surrounds, the sill protectors and the carpet mats. Some buyers may have reservations about the safety of such a minute car. Nudge up against a behemoth 4x4 in a car of the C1’s size and it’s easy to feel rather threatened, but the C1 is likely to have better safety systems than some sizeable SUVs. As well as a specially developed body structure that incorporates crumple zones and impact absorbers at the front and rear, the C1 also boasts ISOFIX child seat anchor points, reinforced doors and up to four airbags.

If that happens, then you can bet this won’t be the last such collaboration we’ll see of this kind. Facebook is here to stay - and so is this C1. To test drive the C1 Connexion, please call the following Citroen dealers; Wigan

This C1 is the first petrol-powered Citroen to slot beneath the all-important 100g/km of CO2 figure. All variants get free road tax for the first year and as for fuel consumption, well, the combined fuel consumption figure has edged up from 61.4mpg to 65.7mpg. Insurance is rated at group 3 on the 1-50 groupings scale, which is a little dearer than the newest crop of rivals but again, not by enough to be significant. It still means that the C1 makes a great choice for newly qualified or younger drivers looking for their first car. The body panels are designed to pop straight off, which makes accident damage cheap and easy to fix. You can’t accuse Citroen of not listening to its customers and this Connexion special edition is a good example of the French brand doing just that. More than 24,000 Facebook folk have managed to specify a very attractive citycar package that’ll look good on the showroom floor. Expect a significant number of citycar buyers to make the Connexion.
