There have been many words exchanged in the battle of Ashfield Park, mostly from Wigan Council deputy leader Cllr David Molyneux and Standish Councillor Gareth Fairhurst. Our report on pages 4042 asks some big questions of both.

What is clear though that council officers DID have preliminary discussions with a housing developer about Ashfield Park. It appears these were instigated by the developer, and didn’t go much further than that. Along came Gareth Fairhurst, who vocalised news of the talks very effectively to Standish residents and has been a pain in the backside of the establishment ever since. The problem is two-fold. Firstly, these sorts of talks go on all the time with councils across the country, and Wigan is no different. However, Wigan could have been a lot clearer about this process, and what their duties are as a planning authority. Instead, their ambiguously worded statements previously have failed to nip this in the bud. Wigan is a forward thinking authority but it does need to recognise that if it refuses to respect the outcome of the village green inquiry, whatever it may be, then it risks losing credibility by the shedload with Standish folk.

The council needs to get ahead of the game now before the inquiry; declare it will accept its recommendations and that, whatever happens, it will continue to maintain the quality of Ashfield Park. Doing those simple things may help the council reclaim the respect of those who, at this moment, view the saga with a large dollop of scepticism.

Organised by Wigan Phoenix Running Club, the course is approximately 10 kilometres long and runners from across the area will be battling it out on Saturday, February 21, from 2.30pm. The starting post is on a footpath just off Arbour Lane and the majority of the route takes in the pathways and bridle ways around Mill Dam Wood (also known as Elnup Wood). Paul Carroll from Wigan Phoenix told Local Life: “We get around 200 people entering and they come from all over, but we’d like to get as many local people as possible entering as well. “It’s not an elite race, people of any running ability are able to join in but because of time limits we can’t accommodate people wanting to walk. “It’s one single race but we have winners in different categories, such as men and women, under 20s, veterans, club team and unattached team.” Registration is available in advance by sending an A5 stamp addressed envelope to Paul Carroll, 21 Pilgrims Way, Standish, Wigan, WN6 0AJ, by February 14. Preentry fees are £6 and £8 for unattached runners, with cheques made payable to Wigan Phoenix. You can

Homeless Help For the fourth year running, Wigan Rotary Club and Soroptomist International of Wigan have joined forces to help local organisation The Brick by donating seventy sleeping bags for some of the homeless of the town. Wigan Rotary president Jim Rawson said: “We are delighted to join with our Soroptomist friends to help such a worthwhile cause as The Brick. While we all hope the coming winter is not severe, we know there will still be a demand for sleeping bags.” Wigan Soroptomist president Cynthia Horrocks said: “The charity does such wonderful work helping the needy of the area and is one my club has supported for many years.” Trish Green, the charity’s manager, said: “We are very grateful to the two groups for their continued support over many years. I can assure everyone that the sleeping bags will be used over the coming months whatever the weather.”

Parky’s Promise David Sudworth meets the Standish woman who has gone from battling breast cancer to whipping up a storm in the kitchen! It’s the news every woman dreads. But Christine Parkinson, from Standish, knew she had breast cancer even before the consultant officially confirmed it. “I walked in, and with him was a nurse who had the words ‘breast cancer care’ on her uniform. I was completely numb, the news totally floored me,” says former Deanery pupil Christine, 44, of Plymouth Grove. “I was also told that I’d need full treatment including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and injections of the drug Herceptin. Initially, it was hoped it would be small but it was apparent the growth was twice as big as they first thought, and it had gone into my lymph nodes.” From that moment, her life went on hold, and even her holidays plans – she’d already booked to go to Crete with husband David in the September – had to be postponed.
16
Christine’s story is sadly not uncommon. Although most forms of this disease occur in over 50s (around 80%), official figures show that over a lifetime, one in eight women will develop breast cancer. That risk is heightened if there is a family history of it, and that proved to be the case for Christine. Her mum, Mavis Lyon, who lives in Whitley, is now 75 and has had breast cancer twice, at the age of 32 and again just five years ago. But with the love of her friends and family, including David, who she married at St Wilfrid’s in Standish in 1996, almost two years on and Christine is now back at work as a civil servant at Wigan JobCentre. The couple also re-booked their Crete holiday which they’d had to cancel 12 months earlier. But far from taking it easy, she’s back running with friends and the Parbold Pink Panthers, and has also decided to raise £10,000 for three good causes; Cancer
“March 27, 2013, was the day I was diagnosed, so I decided that one year on I’d start fundraising and I’d do it to the next ‘anniversary’. “We’ve done lots of things and everyone has been so supportive. The recipe book idea came from the fact that when I go running with Parbold Pink Panthers, we get talking about food and recipes so I asked those who have supported me to give me a signature dish for the book. There are 30 all in all, it’s 36 pages long and I’m hoping people will buy one maybe as a Christmas present.” Good Food by Great Friends is £7 and available from Yours Is The Earth Café at 2 Mill Lane, Parbold; Mrs Lyon’s Tea Room in High Street, Standish, and at Wigan & Leigh Hospice’s Light for a Life event on Tuesday, December 2, at the hospice on Kildare Street, Hindley. You can also buy it from www. parkyspromise.co.uk
Christine at home in Standish Research, the Three Wishes Foundation and Wigan & Leigh Hospice. Good Head for Business Have you ever popped to the shops to buy something and come back with something completely different? Up Holland’s Dorothy Craig took this to extremes in 2005 when she popped out to buy a new head for a brush from a hardware store in Pemberton, and returned home as the new owner of a ladieswear business!
but did you know that the store also sells for other occasions – cruisewear and evening wear? Shopping for a special outfit can be a nerve-racking experience, but Aubergine are well placed to ensure your visit will be memorable not only for the elegant clothes but for the exceptional service also. The store has an in-house seamstress, Anne, who will ensure that
And now, after nine years of hard work by Dorothy and her daughter Nicola Edwards, that ladieswear business - Aubergine - has outgrown their old premises and have set up their new home in a beautiful and spacious double fronted store about 200 yards away. Now clearly established as one of the area’s leading independent Mother of the Bride/Groom stockist, customers visit Aubergine from all over the North West to buy their outfits for the big day. They are spoilt for choice at Aubergine, which stocks a wide and varied collection from some of the most respected occasion wear brands in the business. The store is a stockist for John Charles, Condici, Ispirato, Zeila, Cabotine, Gina Bacconi and Michaela Louisa. On The Move Parbold’s Post Office services are on the move - but the proposed date has been put back. Originally, the transfer of services from the Post Office at 5 The Common to McColl’s at 17 The Common was due to take place before Christmas. However, mail chiefs have now confirmed to Local Life that the move has been put back until early February. As reported in the last Wigan North edition of Local Life, the change is taking place as the existing postmaster wishes to leave the network, so an alternative location just 111 metres away from the current site was being proposed. This has now got the go-ahead after a consultation exercise. As such, the current location will cease to provide a service at 5.30pm on Monday, February 9, with the new service going live at McColl’s at 1pm the following day and will be available during the store’s normal opening hours. During the short period of downtime, Post Office services can still be accessed at the Newburgh branch on Course Lane. At the new branch, customers will be able to access a wide range of services, including Special Delivery, Local Collect, home shopping returns, online banking cash deposits and withdrawals, send funds abroad using Moneygram, and customers can pay bill, pre-order travel money, apply for travel insurance and top up mobile phones. Dave Thomas, chief operating officer for McColl’s Retail Group, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming customers to our new Parbold Post Office, which will offer a wide range of Post Office services alongside our extensive retail offer. As a convenience store operator we are always looking for ways to make life easier for our customers and the additional Post Office services will be available for the full opening hours of the store in order to provide an excellent service for the local community.”
Regional manager Adrian Wales added: “We know how important Post Office services are to residents in Parbold and we are confident that this vibrant, newstyle Post Office at the heart of the community will be popular.
Christmas Performance The Albion Christmas Band return to Wigan Parish Church to celebrate the release of a new album on Friday, December 12, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15 in advance from 01942 824291 or dtcartlidge@gmail.com. Alternatively, they can be bought from Symphony Music, Market Street, Wigan.
Blood Donation Blood donor sessions are being held at the DW Stadium, Loire Drive, on Monday, November 24. There are two sessions available on the day; between 1.15pm-15.30pm and 5.15pm- 7.30pm. The Day I Hit
(... and why I’d do
Alex Murphy talks to David Sudworth about the day he punched Wigan’s chairman, and how it went down into rugby folklore They say time is a great healer. And while ex-Wigan coach Alex Murphy, now in his 75th year, may have mellowed somewhat on certain subjects in recent years, there are a few exceptions - most notably when the name Maurice Lindsay is mentioned. It’s 30 years now since the outspoken Murphy delivered, in his own words, a peach of a right hook which left the former Central Park chairman in a heap on the office floor. Unsurprisingly, soon afterwards Murphy was hauled before the board of directors, including Lindsay who was by now sporting a rather impressive shiner, and duly given his P45. The incident has been shrouded in rugby league folklore ever since with varying accounts. These range from Murphy throwing a telephone at Lindsay to the claim that Murphy had actually tried to strangle his boss with the handset cord, which he denies: “Let me put it this way, if that were true he’d be dead by now!” says Murphy. We meet at Murphy’s home in a quiet part of St Helens near Burtonwood Brewery, which he shares with his wife of 54 years, Alice. The grandfather-oftwo has gone from being a thorn in the side of the rugby establishment to being a bona fide legend of the game. He was awarded an OBE over 15 years ago and next summer a statue of him, Martin Offiah, Billy Boston, Eric Ashton and Gus Risman is to be erected outside Wembley Stadium. The occasion ties in neatly with the 60th anniversary since Murphy signed for St Helens on the stroke of midnight on his 16th birthday. He later went on to play for Leigh and Warrington, as well as representing Great Britain.

My Boss
The ensuing footage was broadcast a few days later, something which earned him a reprimand not from Lindsay, who was in the room at the time, but by Murphy’s own parents back in St Helens, James and Sally.
it again!)
As someone who spent his life trying to beat Wigan, he admits he found it difficult to take the job at Central Park back in 1982. Not only did he have reservations about coaching Saints’ biggest rivals, but also about going to work for a man who he considered a friend. “That was one of my biggest mistakes, and I apologise to the whole of rugby league for bringing Maurice Lindsay into the game. He went from being an unknown to suddenly being in the papers. But he realised that, while I was there, he wouldn’t have full control so he tried to get me out.” Success came in 1983 by winning the John Player Special Trophy for the first time and finishing third in the league, much improved on their 11th position the previous year which saw them swerve relegation by a mere five points.
Murphy’s tongue-lashing was caught on film “I didn’t even realise they were filming at the time,” laughs Alex. “They’d been doing some shots earlier in the day but I’d asked the crew to leave so I could do a team talk. They agreed but asked whether they could leave their equipment in there, so I said fine. It’s only when the programme went out that I realised it had been caught on tape.
“Dad didn’t speak to me for 3 months”
Match attendances started rising from lows of 4,700 a few years previously to a much healthier 10,000. Not that the road to improvement was entirely smooth. The squad was hardly full of household names and their form was patchy. There was a famous incident in 1983 where Murphy was filmed turning the air blue inside the Wigan dressing room after a home defeat to Hull Kingston Rovers.
“I remember being called round to my mum and dad’s, and they wanted an explanation. Dad didn’t even know I knew such words - I was a good Catholic boy. Dad didn’t speak to me for about three months afterwards and I spent a long time at Confession that week. I believe it’s on the internet – I can see the funny side of it now though!” As the seasons passed, the two big personalities of Murphy and Lindsay seemed to clash more and more to the point where it became apparent one of them would have to go. Things came to a head in late summer 1984 when, following a charity tournament, Murphy had what he describes as “a bad day at the office” which ended in him being sacked.

“After the tournament, I went to look for Maurice as neither I nor the players had been paid, and the money was going to charity. I went up to the office and he was there. I said the lads were waiting for their money, and that I wanted my money.”

At this point, Murphy gets out of his front room armchair, where he has been sitting since our interview began, and physically demonstrated what happens: “Not forgetting he was a bookie by trade, this is my lasting memory. He stood up and pulled a massive wad of notes out of his pocket, peeled a few of them off, counting them, and then threw them on the floor.
“One of my friends told me, in front of Maurice, not to take the job. Deep down, as a Saints man, it really did hurt to go to Wigan. Sometimes you have to make decisions you don’t want to make. I think I also wanted to prove a point. The fans were wary at first but in those days Wigan were really struggling. They hadn’t been to Wembley for years and had recently been relegated.”
“I told him to pick it up and then he accused me of being a money-grabbing little b*****d. Again, I told him to pick the money up from the floor or he’d soon be joining it.
“I’m sad it has followed me around ”
Now, I was always taught as a lad that if you make a threat, you’ve got to be prepared to carry it out. I’d never been humiliated like that. He refused to pick it up so I leaned over to grab him, and he grabbed me so I punched him. He went toppling and his telephone shot up into the air and landed on top of him. As I went to leave he put his arm around me but I knew that was it for me as Wigan coach.
Three decades on, the man known as ‘Murph The Mouth’ is a little less feisty, but it’s clear the passage of time hasn’t done anything to soften his stance towards Lindsay, who went on to be one of rugby league’s most dominant personalities. He does however regret how the incident has to a degree overshadowed his career.
“When I went to the board meeting I remember one of the directors, Jack Hilton, saying they couldn’t have me hitting the chairman. I replied that if he does that again, I will effing well kill him.”
“It has followed me around and I’m sad about that, especially if you look at what I’ve achieved in the game. Everyone thought I was the baddie. Maurice Lindsay knew nothing about rugby league but these wheeldealers are now part of life. Before him, businessmen were in the game but they’d have a low profile. Then they started talking to the press even though they knew nothing about rugby. They even started wanting to sign players, and 90% of managers, including me, would never have allowed that.
Murphy admits that, with the benefit of hindsight, he probably shouldn’t have gone to Wigan, but was persuaded by Lindsay: “I’d got to know him as he was part of a group who I spent a fair bit of time with down Bolton dog track. We got to know each other, I was at Warrington at the time and I even invited him to come down to Wembley for the Challenge Cup final.
“Maurice wanted to take the credit years later for Wigan’s successes but I was the one who started it. I was the one who told him to sign the likes of Shaun Edwards, which we did while I was there, Martin Offiah and so on. Shaun signed for Wigan even though Saints offered him more money, but I grew up with his dad, Jackie.”
“If he does it again, I’ll kill him”
And the big question is, if he had his time again, would he do things differently? “Probably not,” says Murphy. “You make decisions at the time and you stick by them. My upbringing taught me that you have the capability to sort problems out. “I’ve spoken to Maurice since that incident back in 1984 but if I ever met him in the next life, I guarantee I’d do exactly the same thing. “The funny thing is I never did pick up the money he threw on the floor. I just left it lying there on the office floor. I hope it went to a good home…” Maurice Lindsay

Ashfield Park Row Update David Sudworth reports on the claims and counter-claims surrounding the future of a Standish green space
Wigan Council, to a representative of Morris Homes, which referred to a pre-application enquiry meeting in January 2012. The email indicated that potential residential development on Ashfield Park was discussed, and also goes on to mention matters raised by the council’s highways engineer and the council’s ecologist in relation to any such proposal. Earlier this month, Wigan Council stated that the green space has been Cllr Gareth Fairhurst at Ashfield Park subject to “incorrect speculation that developers had been drawing up plans Wigan Council has sought to scotch talk that a Standish park is to be redeveloped for the park” and insisted that “this has never been the case.”
- but accepts initial talks did take place with house builders about the site.
Town hall chiefs and Standish Cllr Gareth Fairhurst have been locked in a long-running battle about Ashfield Park, with Cllr Fairhurst setting up a Save Ashfield Park group and holding public meetings about the issue.
When Local Life put the January 2012 emails to Wigan Council, and pointed out the apparent contradictions between the emails and their latest comments, bosses accepted that meeting took place but stressed that, as a planning authority, they have to deal impartially with any proposals.
Cllr Fairhurst points to an email, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, which was sent from Richard Taylor, principal planning officer at
A spokesman told Local Life: “The council accepts that meetings took place between its planning officers and developers. As a council we have to deal impartially
40
when a developer comes to us with proposals and assess them purely on the planning merits the developer puts forward. “It does not mean the council would be in favour of any such development in its capacity as the owner of the park. The council has never given any indication that it would be. The council has never changed its view. With regard to planning applications the council is constrained by the planning legislation and has to deal with all applications according to that legislation. As landowner it has never considered bringing forward the site for development and sees it as a historic park and open space which has planning policies in place to deter built development.”
“This has been a long, hard slog” Cllr Gareth Fairhurst said: “This has been a long and hard slog. Wigan Council has continually denied having discussed selling Ashfield of for houses. Rather than just saying ‘sorry, we get the message,’ they continue to try and spin their way out of this mess. “The whole of Standish supports this campaign.”
Pre-Application Guidance A joint paper on Probity in Planning, from the Planning Advisory Service and the Local Government Association, deals with the issue of pre-application discussions. It states: “Pre-application discussions between a potential applicant and a council can benefit both parties and are encouraged. However, it would be easy for such discussions to become, or be seen by objectors to become, part of a lobbying process on the part of the applicant. “In addition to any specific local circumstances, guidelines should include clarity at the outset that the discussions will not bind a council to making a particular decision and that any views expressed are personal and provisional... (and ) an acknowledgement that consistent advice should be given by officers based upon the development plan and material planning considerations.”
Inquiry To Resume The postponed inquiry on whether to designate Ashfield Park as a village green is set to resume early next year.
Deputy council leader Cllr David Molyneux said: “Many residents will know through our direct communication with them we have said time after time there have never been any planning applications put forward for Ashfield Park. There are no current applications which have been put forward or are being proposed. And we have no intention to offer the park as a development site.”

Cllr Gareth Fairhurst made the application back in 2012 and an independent barrister, acting as the inquiry inspector, was appointed. However, it was postponed to wait for a Supreme Court finding on a similar village green inquiry. The council says the inquiry cannot make a final decision on whether Ashfield Park can be designated a village green, but will make recommendations to Wigan Council as the local registration authority. Wigan Council has opposed the application, with council deputy leader Cllr David Molyneux saying
...call us now on 01695 627 999
41
that if it went ahead, it would “stop the council improving Ashfield Park with new play or sporting equipment in the future which would leave the people of Standish losing out.” Cllr Fairhurst told Local Life: “They have, since the very start, opposed this village green. They say that if the land was registered Cllr David Molyneux as a village green then they could not do any improvements to Ashfield Park. That’s the most ridiculous statement ever. There are thousands of village greens around the country and they are not left to go to rack and ruin.”
Local Life asked Wigan Council to specify which legislation or guidance states that designation of a piece of land to a village green would restrict further improvements such as new play or sporting equipment. We also enquired whether such designation would merely disallow the provision of additional facilities/ pieces of equipment rather than not allowing the maintenance of what is in place at the time it became a village green. The council didn’t give a direct reply, but sent us the following statement: “We have never said the park would be left to rack and ruin. The council is committed to preserving the park as a public asset but is concerned that village green status will place restrictions on the council’s ability to make improvements in the future. There are sufficient protections in place already to ensure its continued availability for public recreation.”
Remembrance Garden
Festive Spirits
All Saints CE Primary School in Appley Bridge has received a £10,000 boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a Remembrance Garden. Teacher Jayne Hutchings was prompted into submitting a bid for the funding following a letter from West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper encouraging local schools to apply.

There will be the opportunity to pop along between 10am-1pm on the day, where there will be a selection of specialist stalls selling handbags, jewellery, cakes, chocolates, cards and festive flower arrangements.
This money has been used to turn a part of the school grounds into a Remembrance garden which is also for use by the local community.
In addition, Christmas carols will be performed by pupils from St Marie’s Primary School at 11am at the Cross Street venue. All welcome.
Headteacher Janet Dunn said: “Being able to commemorate the century of World War I in building this garden of remembrance has meant a great deal to our staff and pupils. It goes beyond simply learning the facts on the page. “Building this Remembrance garden has been a special experience for the entire school.”

Tickling The Ivories A pianist who won plaudits from the likes of Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry will be in Parbold in December. Harry The Piano will be at the village hall, on The Green, on Saturday, December 13, from 7.45pm. Since starting to play at the age of four Harry, has acquired what critics say is the immense skill of moving seamlessly between jazz, cabaret and classical in a manner that hasn’t been seen in the UK since the heyday of Dudley Moore. As well as appearing with a who’s who of British jazz musicians, he has worked with stars ranging from Englebert Humperdinck and Charlotte Church, to David Bowie and James Belushi via Elvis Costello and Sir Willard White. Organisers say this is a rare opportunity to witness Harry’s unequalled talents, and to put him to the test with requests for your favourite melodies in a style of your own choice.
Harry The Piano Stephen Fry lauded his for his “phenomenal talent, unobtrusive charm and wit, which are a delight” with Jonathan Ross simply said: “He’s the best damn pianist in the civilised world.” Tickets are £15.50 for adults and £5.50 for young people via www.parbolddouglasmusic.org

Money & Investments - by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP)
How do investors spread risk? ASSET ALLOCATION Basically, asset allocation is a term used to describe the investment asset mix held within an investment portfolio. Independent research has shown that the right types of investment assets (Asset allocation) can create 94% of the long term investment performance success. Stock selection contributes 4% and stock market timing 2%. Source -Institutional investment in the United Kingdom. A Review - Paul Myners. You should never look to place your entire portfolio into just one asset class. Whilst a single asset type can provide you with the highest short - term returns, due to timing issues this could well be at the expense of achieving your longer term investment goals. In order to achieve these longer term goals you will need to ensure that you are holding the right mix of asset types, something which is determined by both prevailing market conditions, your stage in life, and of course your attitude towards investment risk.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN ASSET CLASSES Cash - Low risk Ordinarily these are a very stable form of investment however over the longer term they offer the lowest real rates of return. Cash ISAs, Internet Accounts tend to provide the better interest rates. Everyone should have a holding in this asset class for emergencies.
56
High risk investments Venture Capital Trust Enterprise Investment Schemes Futures and Options, Small cap stocks Moderate risk investments Blue Chip Stocks, Growth Stocks, Mutual Funds, Commercial Property Funds Lower risk investments Corporate Bonds, Government Bonds Cash and cash equivalents Savings Accounts, Insurance, Certificates of Deposit
Fixed Interest Securities- Low to medium risk Gilts and Investment grade corporate bonds are in the main relatively stable investments, but tend to give a modest return. Ordinarily they have a negative correlation to equities and will tend to perform poorly when equities are doing well. Gilts are loans to the government for which a fixed rate of return is paid at a set point in the future. Property - Low to medium risk Commercial property tends to be un-correlated with other asset classes, except perhaps in the level of yield obtainable, and therefore offers performance unrelated to how the rest of your portfolio is doing. Equities - High risk Stock and shares are relatively volatile. Timing and stock selection is a critical component to obtaining superior returns.
ARE YOU CAUTIOUS, BALANCED OR ADVENTUROUS? Asset allocation will be driven by your attitude towards investment risk as well as the life stage you are now at. The following examples demonstrate the two ends of the spectrum. Example 1 Mr and Mrs Cautious Retired couple in their 70s, own their own house, moderately well off with a variety of savings and investments. They are looking to maintain their capital and to provide extra income to supplement their pension. The last thing they want to do is to take unnecessary levels of risk . Example 2 Miss Adventurous Age 30 with no dependents. Receiving a good salary with little outgoings. Keen to build up capital. Willing to take risk as she has plenty of time to put things right if she makes a mistake.
Clearly, the asset allocations to be used within the above examples are likely to be quite different as the age and risk profile of the individuals need to be reflected within any portfolio model.
HOW WE CAN HELP YOU? Our approach to looking after new and existing clients is very simple Stage 1
Understanding your circumstances and attitude to risk
Stage 2
Identify your objectives, short and longer term
Stage 3
Apply asset allocation modelling
Stage 4
Research and select investments within each asset class.

Recipe of the month
Granny’s Xmas Pudding
The stout in this recipe will add the moisture to the pudding and the cocoa powder makes the pudding look lovely and dark.
Method
Ingredients 1oz mixed peel
4oz plain flour
1oz ground almonds
4oz breadcrumbs
2 medium sized eggs
4oz beef suet
¼ teaspoon almond essence
4oz brown sugar
2 teaspoons brandy
4oz raisins
1 can of stout
4oz sultanas
2 teaspoons cocoa powder
4oz glace cherries
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 grated lemon rind
¼ teaspoon baking powder
½ apple grated
¼ teaspoon mixed spice
½ carrot grated
Equipment 2 pint bowl, pudding bowl, clean tea towel or pudding cloth.
74
Place all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix together. Add the eggs and the brandy and mix then pour in the stout gradually and keep stirring until your mixture is the consistency of a loose cake mix. Grease your pudding bowl with a little butter and pour in the pudding mix. Cover with foil and then a tea towel or pudding cloth and tie it to the top of the bowl, this is to prevent any water getting in. Place in a large boiling pan and fill with water ¾ of the way up the side of the bowl. Boil on a moderate heat for 6 hours keep topping up the water with boiled kettle water if the level starts to drop. When the pudding is ready turn it out and leave to cool. These puddings can be stored wrapped in foil from now until Christmas, to reheat just place the pudding back in the bowl and boil for another 2 hours on Christmas day. Can be served with a sprinkling of icing sugar on the top or pour on ¼ brandy and light for a flaming Christmas pudding.

Myles apart... David Sudworth looks at how the son of a Standish family became one of America’s founding fathers
With a name like Myles, he was always destined to go far. But the distances Captain Standish embarked on more than 400 years ago were beyond the realms of possibility to most ordinary folk at that time.
But Standish was one of those who survived and, upon arrival in the eastern coastal state of Massachusetts, he was to discover a place where his legacy would live for centuries to come. Details of Standish’s early life are sketchy to say the least. Records show that, having been born in the mid 1580s, he was proclaimed as a Son of The House of Standish. However, it is said the House of Standish was the principal owner of the Manor of Duxbury in Chorley from 1275 to 1812. This ambiguity has led to both Wigan and Chorley staking a claim to his heritage. Indeed, back in April 1976, Wigan Council designated almost 13 hectares of Standish, just to the east of Chorley Road, including the site of the bleach works, as the Mayflower Conservation Area. As an interesting aside, the bleach works - which started out life as a paper mill - used the Mayflower ship as their trademark.
“Place of many fish”
Captain Myles Standish As one of those on board the Mayflower ship, he was literally sailing into a whole new world, across the Atlantic to north America. Not that it was easy going; months of hell ensued as both passengers and crew battled with death and disease.
76
Not to be outdone, when plans were unveiled in 2007 to extend the B5252 Chorley bypass road, part of the stretch which connects it with the A6 near Holy Cross High School was named Myles Standish Way. And then across the pond there’s the name of the American town which of Duxbury, on the suburbs of Boston, which until his arrival had the native American name of Mattakeesett, meaning “place of many fish.” The area of town he lived in became known as Standish Shore. To find out why Standish settled in America in the 1620s, you have to go back to his military career, which is said to have started in Queen Elizabeth’s Army and where he apparently rose to the rank of Lieutenant.
to settle, they drew up what became known as the Mayflower Compact, which became the first governing document of the new colony. Myles Standish was among its first signatories.
Duxbury Hall His service took him to the Dutch province of South Holland, where he got to know the Pilgrims. These were a group of separatists from the Church of England who had fled from here for the more tolerant town of Leiden, around 25 miles from Amsterdam.
However, trouble sprang up soon afterwards in February 1621 following sightings of Native Americans. This prompted the new settlers to form a mini army, with Standish elected as their commander and captain, a role he was consistently re-elected to for the remainder of his life as he led men in several brutal, but successful battles.
“Later become Duxbury” Eventually, the settlers acquired rights and started to parcel up and divide land among themselves. Standish was given a 120 acre farm in an area which would later become Duxbury. In later life, he took a more administrative, holding positions such as a Treasurer of the Colony in the 1640s and even a surveyor of highways.
The Mayflower braved storms and gales to make it across the Atlantic However, life wasn’t easy in Holland at that time, and this relatively small group was slowly fragmenting due to age and younger ones having to leave to find work. Having discounted moving on to the Dutch colony of Guiana in South America, they eventually settled on eastern America. On September 16, 1620, the Mayflower set sail with 121 passengers. Just under two months later, they spotted Cape Cod, and dropped anchor on November 11. Although they had no legal right

He died on October 3, 1656, aged in 70s, and was buried in what became known as Myles Standish Cemetery in Duxbury. It is now one of the oldest, maintained cemeteries in the USA. As with most things, time has a habit of romanticising certain periods in history. This is no doubt true of Standish’s story, which was helped by the fictional character in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s narrative
1858 poem, The Courtship of Myles Standish. It’s said this raised Standish’s profile to such a coveted level that monuments were erected. One such memorial, built in Duxbury in 1898, was the third tallest of its kind in America. Towns in Maine and Minneapolis also bear Captain Standish’s surname, as does a state forest outside Duxbury and a building at Boston University. However, it appears that despite having been left England, Standish was still a considerable landowner locally. His will, written the year before his death, bequeathed land to his son: “All my lands as heire
“Close links with both” apparent by lawfull Decent in Ormistick, Borsconge, Wrightington, Maudsley, Newburrow, Crawston and the Ile of man.” Despite the antiquated spellings, it’s not hard to decipher the areas which he had a financial interest in.
The Myles Standish monument in Duxbury, Massachusetts
78
The ravages of time probably mean we will never know for certain where exactly Standish was born. But there’s enough information available to prove that regardless of where he took his first breath, Standish had very close links with both Wigan and Chorley during his life. That means both towns can rightfully lay at least a partial claim to a man who went on to become one of the founding fathers of modern-day America.

Jack’s Tracks
Westhead & Lathom Maybe it’s a sign of age, but the overuse of some words really seems to grate these days. Take ‘historic’ for example. It’s totally unnecessary, particularly when bolted onto place names. After all, given the fact it’s now zillions of years since some gas and rocks had a heated argument one day and created this place we now call Planet Earth, doesn’t everywhere have a history? I suppose it’s what happens though when you let loose sharp-suited marketing bods, probably called Hugh and Tabitha, on unsuspecting identikit towns to do a ‘rebranding exercise’... Of course, Lathom has a bona fide history which doesn’t need any such hard sell. Indeed, it’s in front of your very eyes at regular intervals during this six mile walk. And because its history is far from dull, I’ll excuse the use of ‘Historic’ on its local signage.
80
We started by parking up on Vicarage Lane. Word of warning here though - be aware that next to Ruff Woods there are time limits of two hours. As we knew it would take around three hours to complete, we parked up further down the lane where there were no prohibitions. Once booted, we headed down the path towards Ruff Lane before taking a sharp right just before the gates which directed us around the boundary of the property. The Right of Way took us down to Crosshall Brow, at which point we made a right and followed the A577 down into Westhead Village. As a settlement, it has managed to retain its charm despite the fact it is on an
increasingly busy route. Keep an eye out for some of the old buildings, particularly the Old Post Office and the black-and-white Grapes Cottage, built in 1746. Carry straight along until you reach Greenacre, at which point you turn in. As you walk down Greenacre, there’s a bit of a drop on your right which is signed as Meadowbridge Close. Go down here and follow the path. A point of interest here is that had you gone down this road 60 years ago, you’d have been walking across the old railway line which ran from Ormskirk to Rainford via Skelmersdale. Rail buffs will remember this being the line of the old Skem Jazzer train, so called because of the humming noise it made on the tracks, used to run.

Carrying on, the path sweeps round to the right and then goes past a house with private paddock at the side. The left turn off which takes us over the field was a bit hidden, but we eventually discovered a small sign on the post holding the electrical cables. So if in doubt, follow the pylons.
a route which services a number of dwellings but of course is a public right of way. We come out at Blythe Lane, directly opposite the imposing gates to Blythe Hall. This impressive, Grade II listed pile was built somewhere between the late 16th Century or the early 17th Century. It was remodelled by the 3rd Earl of Lathom as a residence to replace Lathom Hall, and apparently used in the 1920s for entertaining his theatrical friends such as Ivor Novello and Noel Coward. Before we start making our way back, we head to the junction of Abbey Lane to take a quick look at the site of the Ancient Priory Cross. The cross was only reinstated recently, and it’s believed the original cross could have been an ancient boundary marker or a place where funeral processions rested on their way to the nearby abbey.
Again, it’s a straight route across to Lodge Farm, at which point you take a straight right towards Hall Lane. This is now where the area’s ‘historical’ tag is wellearned. But first, we pass on the right the Pilkington research laboratory. Pilks, as they are referred to locally, have been here since 1960 and the facility is set within 50 acres. Although it’s slightly odd to see such a large site of this kind in a rural area, it does blend in reasonably well. Just a bit further down, opposite the junction of Cranes Lane, is the entry to Lathom Park. This is the site where hundreds of thousands of horses were trained ahead of being sent to the fields of conflict in France. In fact, Cranes Lane was used as the main route to transport the mules to and from Ormskirk Train Station. Although Steven Spielberg has given their story the Hollywood treatment in his 2011 film War Horse, the area seems more popular for resting drivers than film buffs. Indeed, while we were there a Dutch family parked up with their caravan to have a flask of Douwe Egberts and some Edam butties. Probably. After stopping for a few photos (of the park entrance, not the Dutch family), we carry on down the unadopted Cranes Lane before veering right across the fields in a north-westerly direction. Once at the top there are a variety of directions but if you are following this exact route, follow the path which to all intents and purposes, gives the appearance of a private driveway. It is in fact
82
Back over Abbey Bridge, we follow the sign which sees us follow the brook. For this part of the walk, it can be a little bit daunting for those who aren’t used to informal paths. There is no clearly defined path for this, indeed, the only way we could fathom it out was by some recent cutting back of the vegetation. Again though, the overhead electrical cables provided a useful guide as they more or less followed the route. We headed over a stile and through a small copse before we ended up facing a tennis court. We were convinced we’d taken a wrong turning as we now appeared to be in someone’s back garden. Indeed, we were but said garden contained a public right of way. Mercifully for us, someone (presumably the owner) was out weeding the path and not only helped guide us, but cheerfully asked where we’d come from and then ended up wishing us well for the rest of our walk. I don’t think I’d have been as jovial to find two strangers trampling over my neat lawn, but this gent was joviality personified. If you are reading this, many thanks! I recognise though that not everyone will be as lucky as we were so, if you find yourself in the same spot and can’t seem to find a way out past the locked gates, the following tip should help. Next to the gates, there is a small cluster of trees. Walk into the cluster and ahead of you will be some wire fencing which you follow, and will eventually lead you out at the side of the gates, and onto the formal driveway. Once at the end, you come to a crossroads where you need to take the road ahead (Lathom Lane). Bear left at the first public footpath you come to and you’ll be on the concrete access
towards Charlesbye Farm. Whereas the farm route veers leftwards about a quarter of the way down, the public access carries on over the fields, so don’t take your eye off the ball here. From here to is a now virtual straight line up to Crosshall Brow, across the road and into the path into Ruff Woods. Once in the woods, turning left and keeping to the path which adjoins the wood boundary will take you straight out onto Vicarage Lane and, once you take a final left, back to the car. Otherwise, there’s a few other paths where you can explore the woods, if your aching feet can take it. The beauty of this walk is that is can be taken in either direction, it’s fairly flat and it presents a few challenges which, although puzzling at first, aren’t insurmountable. Also, and perhaps most importantly, it gives you a proper sense of the area’s history rather in a way which Hugh and Tabitha could only dream of…
Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear whilst walking. Whilst every care has been taken to ensure that the walk is accurate, neither the publisher or its editorial contributors can accept, and hereby disclaim, any liability to any party to loss or damage caused by errors or omissions resulting from negligence, accident or other cause.

Test Drive - by Tim Barnes-Clay
Hyundai i30 Like its slightly older hatchback sibling, the latest generation Hyundai i30 Tourer, launched two years, offers excellent levels of comfort, refinement and efficiency. What’s more, the car adds a greater load-carrying capability to the i30’s overall package. Space is amongst the best in the class, with the Tourer boasting a larger luggage capacity than the majority of its key rivals. But who’s it aimed at? Well, the i30 Tourer is able to meet the demands of both retail and fleet customers as it offers versatility along with a range of clean and fuel efficient engines. Running costs are also low, not only includes: Bluetooth connectivity and voice recognition, multi-function steering wheel and air conditioning, body coloured door handles and mirrors, along with LED daytime running lights. The range-topping Style Nav model adds touch screen navigation plus a rear view parking camera. It also has alloy wheels - and luxury touches such as cruise control with speed limiter, parking sensors, electric rear windows, climate control and a leather steering wheel and gear knob. compared with the older pre-2012 i30 Estate, but with major competitors too. There is a choice of two engines in the range, with motorists able to choose either the 120PS petrol unit, or alternatively the 1.6 CRDi diesel in the form of a 110PS or a higher-powered 128PS variant. Both engines are coupled to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The car on test here is the flagship ‘Style Nav’ 1.6 CRDi 128PS version, with a manual gearbox. Like the hatchback, the i30 Tourer comes specified with a generous list of standard features. The catalogue of kit

Slip behind the wheel, and there are no major complaints apart from the lack of a lumbar support adjustment. That said, the seats are moulded nicely and it’s easy to achieve a good driving position. The binnacle houses clear and simple dials and the car’s fuel gauge takes forever to shift from full. It’s just a shame some cheap looking cabin plastics are in keeping with the car’s unexceptional exterior.
The touch screen navigation system isn’t that intuitive and therefore frustrates, but, like all things, once you get the hang of how the gadgetry works, it’s fine. There’s more technology to spice things up on the steering wheel too. Unlike the satnav, there’s a simple button you can push that changes the steering feel from normal to sporty, offering a welcome spark of dynamism to the drive.

Garden Diary - by Angie Barker
Planning your Christmas garden
Award Winner
Is now is a good time to take stock of your garden? Yes! I know it sounds a strange thing to say when really all you’ve got on your mind is your Christmas shopping, however gardens should still hold interest and look good even in the depths of winter and the best way to achieve this is to use plants for structure and colour.
colour up red during the cold weather and are followed by pink flowers in spring.
The following is a list of plants which I use all the time in my garden design planting schemes to achieve just this:
Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald ‘n’ Gold’. This small shrub will brighten even the darkest winter border and also makes a good, low growing evergreen hedge. The small leaves are yellow and bright green but have a tinge of pink during the colder months.
Sarcococca confusa or Christmas Box. A medium sized evergreen shrub with highly scented white flowers in winter. Skimmia ‘Rubella’ is a hardy evergreen shrub with reddish/pink bud like flowers around Christmas time. They do need acidic compost so I’ve got mine planted in a pot by my front door. Phormium ‘Yellow Wave’ is a contemporary looking plant with strappy yellow, evergreen leaves.
Buxus sempervirens or Box. Can be used as low hedging or topiary shapes to give really good winter outline. It looks good throughout the year as well as a contrast to softer perennial planting. Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ grown as a half standard or lollipop tree as I like to call them. They bring height and evergreen structure and have small white flowers in the winter months – and they look great wrapped with fairy lights.
In fact if you are stuck for a gift idea, why not buy your loved one a plant which is performing at its best at this time of year and which will give them pleasure for many years to come. (Do you think Hubby has taken the hint?) After all, garden centres aren’t just for Christmas decorations!
Bergenia ‘Bressingham Beauty’ or Elephants Ears. A low growing evergreen with rounded leaves which
Have a very lovely Christmas everyone and see you next year.
Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

A View From The Lump Local gossip, gripes and goings-on Pole Position Once upon a time, libraries were quite rightly foreboding places. Dusty tomes with no pictures, the sound of heel against waxed wooden flooring and nostrils full of rising damp evoke memories of heady days before they sold out and became welcoming, inviting hubs of the community. How inconsiderate. Happily, The Lump’s local reading rooms continue to be traditional, yet manage to reflect the changing attitudes of the day and the ensuing social considerations. Take for example the other day, it was noted by us hardy regulars that a small, Polish language section had appeared. One of the books was from that most famous of internationalists, Jeremy Clarkson; the man who you may recall once tactfully suggested that a car made by German manufacturers BMW had a sat nav system which only went to Poland. Mein Gott! Anyhow, it appears the Top Gear motormouth’s book, The World According to Clarkson, has been translated for our Polish cousins under the title Swiat Wedlug Clarksona. Humour is notoriously parochial, and not being a scholar in East European languages, I’d be interested to know as to how his musings are received in, say, Krakow. Back here though, I’m reliably informed that Jezza’s ramblings have been whipped into second place by a certain lady author named E.L. James and her racy pageturner 50 Twarzy Greya.
Funny how when it comes to certain things, language is no barrier...
I’ll Drink To That In times past, The Lump liked nothing more than the odd afternoon nursing a fortified lemonade while perusing The Sporting Life. And it looks like there’ll be even more opportunities to do so soon. Passing the old Standish Pound Saver shop on High Street the other day, there was plenty of work going on inside. Happens it’s going to be a micro pub, after Wigan Council’s planners gave it their blessing. Not that the planning application process was all plain sailing as some locals wrote in to object. Indeed, one claimed the “pavement is far too narrow to be littered with drunks”. It’s doubtful Standish is about to become like post-prohibition America, but if it’s any reassurance, I can personally promise to the good burghers of Standish not to wait on the pavement for ‘er in doors to pick me up. I’ll stay near the bar instead. Hic...
locally and in the Big Smoke. Let’s hope when she eventually gets her hands on one of those ministerial red boxes, she doesn’t forget the mere mortals, also known as voters, who put her there.
And Finally… It’s always a difficult choice over where to take Ford Anglia out for its fortnightly spin. After much chinstroking, the winning destination was The Lump’s long-standing chum of many years, The Beacon, a stout partner in crime from our days in Class 6B at St Trinian’s Mixed. However, getting to The Beacon’s country pile meant going across some of Lancashire’s most boneshaking roads. Suffice to say I saw better highways during my brief army dispatch to Chad in the 1950s. Come on Lancs County Council, put some asphalt where your mouth is and get them sorted - the poor Anglia’s tyres cannae take much more!
Handy Nandy You’ve got to take your flat cap off to Wigan MP Lisa Nandy, she sure does get about. In one afternoon while sat in front of the black and white portable with a cup of Bovril, our Lisa popped up no fewer than three times on different programmes, and from what I can recall, about varying subjects. Ambition is seen as a bad thing in a politician, but fair play to her, she seems to be doing the business both
