2014 promises to be an interesting year for a number of reasons; the economy looks to be getting better after a tough few years, the Commonwealth Games are coming to these shores, Scotland will decide whether it wants to stay in the UK and in the summer England may not lose on penalties to Germany in the Brazil 2014 World Cup (ok, perhaps that is stretching my optimism a little too far!) Joking aside, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we made 2014 the Year of Optimism? As a country, we can have a tendency to be a bit downbeat, always waiting for something to go wrong. After all, only in Britain could characters such as Basil Fawlty and Victor Meldrew be so celebrated! Perhaps if our collective attitude was more positive, we’d be further up the league tables for national happiness, rather than languishing behind the likes of Norway (1st), Holland (9th) and Germany (14th). And who knows, if we did exude more positivity, it might galvanise our national team to win the World Cup in Rio on July 13 … penalties or no penalties!

Top Draw! Three lucky Orrell schoolchildren proved they were top draw after winning prizes in a poster competition. Amelie Galbraith, aged 9, from Holgate Primary, came top in the challenge to create a message aimed at deterring irresponsible dog owners who allow their pets to foul in the area. Jack Ashcroft, aged 8, from Newfold Primary, was second and Milly Smith, also aged 9, came third out of a number of entries. The competition was run by Orrell & Billinge Network after concerns were raised about incidents of dog fouling on paths and pavements near local schools. Year 4 pupils were invited to take part in the competition. First prize was £50 for Amelie, £50 to the school and an art set, sponsored by the Network. The second prize was £25 for Jack, courtesy of Local Life, and an art set, and the third prize was £25 for Milly, also courtesy of Local Life. Among those on the judging panel was David Sudworth, Temporary Editor of Local Life, and Network members. Dorothy Walls, Network Chairman, said: “A number of entries were received and they were to a very high standard. The judges had a difficult task in choosing just three winners. Timebank Project An innovative new self-help project is being set up in the area. Billinge & Orrell Transition Group members have decided to create a Timebank, which works on the principle of giving your time towards something in order to get some help in return. For example, participants may be able to spend three hours helping out at Greenslate Community Farm in Billinge in return for three hours’ worth of babysitting from a CRBchecked neighbour. Anyone and everyone can get involved in the Timebank, both as individuals or as an existing group/organisation. Winstanley Art Group is offering local drawing and painting enthusiasts the chance to brush up on their skills. Three local ladies who separately joined one of the Rosemary Conley classes run by Franchisee Chris Whistlecroft and her employee Annette Lord are testament to what benefits can be achieved in making changes towards a healthier lifestyle…and what fun can be had along the way! received was that my weight ballooned due to the side effect of the drugs. I discovered Rosemary Conley and in a short space of time I reached a target by losing 3 stone. For me it is ‘weight loss by laughter’ as I never laugh as much in my life, as when I am in class. MAUREEN MCINTYRE (Right) I am now 4 stones lighter than when I started and the size I was when I was in my twenties, but I feel much fitter, healthier and more toned too! I now know that this exercise is not just helping my physical health, but my mental health also. Both Chris and Annette have given me so much more than a fitness regime. These two ladies are very special and I am sure that Rosemary herself must be very proud to have these ladies as part of her team. What fantastic ambassadors for her classes they truly are. Chris continues, “Losing weight is one of life’s hardest challenges. Research demonstrates that those who chose to do this with the support of a group have a greater success rate than those who go it alone. Marie Cure Help Marie Curie Cancer Care is appealing for people in Billinge and Orrell to join a new fundraising committee. The group particularly needs a treasurer to keep a record of the monies raised by the group, and event helpers with duties such as welcoming guests, helping serve refreshments and preparing rooms for events. Previous events have included Blooming Great Tea Parties and an Annual Blouse and Bling event. Lunch Bunch! St Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church Hall in Orrell was a hive of activity when local over-75s gathered for a festive lunch. Organised by the Orrell & Billinge Network, it saw a team of volunteers serve up a sumptuous two-course meal with sherry to start. Afterwards, there was a visit from Father Christmas who presented everyone with a gift, as well as a raffle. One of the prizes was a Local Life hamper, which was won by Bill Horrocks.

Patient Group Are you a patient at Hall Green Surgery in Up Holland? Old School Ties

Up Holland Grammar School may have closed 36 years ago, but its spirit lives on. David Sudworth reports… Wherever Alan Swift goes, reminders of his old school never seem far away. When buying his house, he discovered the person selling it was former Up Holland Grammar School metalwork teacher Eric Anderton. A coincidence maybe, but living next door was Stan Melling, the teacher who he credits with getting him through his chemistry O-Levels! Not that he minds one bit as Alan, 64, of Crank Road, Billinge, is proud of his days at UGS. “It was a really good school. People who went there are now living in all four corners of the world, and some have done very well for themselves.” Indeed they have. Among the school’s alumni includes Cathy Ashton, who was appointed to the House of Lords in 1999 where upon she given the title Baroness Ashton of Up Holland. She received widespread praise at the tail end of last year for her role as EU policy chief in bringing about a nuclear deal with Iran, which many hope will eventually pave the way for peace in the Middle East. Former pupils are now being invited to a reunion where organisers are hoping as many people who went the school will be able to attend.

David Robinson, who grew up on the old College Farm in Roby Mill, went to Up Holland Grammar between 1961 and 1966. Now aged 63, and living in Hindley Green, he oversees a website dedicated to the old school: “I started it around 10 years ago when Friends Reunited was a big thing. At first, it was just for people from my year but it’s now grown beyond that. Our first reunion was in 2005, and we had another in 2010. But people aren’t getting any younger so we decided to only wait four years for this next one. “I enjoyed my school days. Back then, the teachers were real characters. We had a biology teacher and on the first day she came in and said ‘My name is Miss Penman – P.E.N.M.A.N and don’t you forget it.’ As she spelt it out verbally, she wrote it in big letters on the blackboard. Everyone remembers her saying that. She had white hair with a yellow nicotine streak in it because she always had a cigarette in her mouth when she wasn’t in class.” Alan, who grew up on Claremont Road in Billinge, added: “They were good teachers and we respected them. At the last reunion our old headmaster Brian Ellis wanted to say a few words and, as you do at reunions, everyone was chatting away and as soon as he said ‘Quiet!’ everyone stopped immediately. It may have been 50 years since

he taught us, but the respect is still there.” However, that’s not to say the children weren’t averse to getting up to a bit of mischief. Emboldened by contemporary programmes such as That Was The Week That Was and the launch of Private Eye magazine, the pupils launched their own journal called The Weekly Scandal, which included jokey references to teachers and artistic caricatures. Unsurprisingly, after the teachers found out, its tenure was short-lived! However, both David and Alan acknowledge the teachers were, for the time, not oppressively strict and in fact encouraged the pupils socially as well as academically. “We had something called Penny Socials where you could take your pop records in at lunchtime and you’d pay a penny for entry, which would go to charity,” recalls David. Alan also recalls that, following Education Secretary Barbara Castle’s abolition of grammars, UGS actually became more popular. One of the reasons was that when surrounding councils started closing implementing Government policy, parents who disagreed had a choice of sending their children to different grammars further afield or to the new local comprehensives. Consequently, UGS started welcoming pupils from areas such as St Helens, Kirkby and Chorley. All these memories and more will be rekindled at the reunion on Saturday, March 15, at St James’ Social Club, St James Road, Orrell. Tickets are £10 each including buffet supper.

300 Years of Service Up Holland Grammar served the community for over 300 years before closing in the late 1970s. It opened its doors in 1661, and was initially based in a building on School Lane which exists to this day. It was known for its traditional curriculum based on Latin, and for part of the year the school day ran from 7am-5pm. In the late 1800s, the junior part of the school moved a short distance to Church Street. Shortly afterwards, the school decamped to Ox House Road, which is now the site of Up Holland High School. It was due to merge with Ashton Grammar School but the plans were ditched following the outbreak of World War II. In 1944, Squire Bankes of Winstanley Hall set aside 20 acres of land for the new Grammar School site. It opened its doors in 1953. Eventually, following the abolition of grammars, the site became home to Winstanley College. Its first Principal was Brian Ellis, who was the final headmaster at Up Holland Grammar School. A Wigan-born actress is hoping to pass on her experience to a fresh generation of artists. Helen Noble, who played the role of Abby Davies in Channel 4â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hollyoaks for five years, is the creative director of Tread, which has classes starting at The Mill at The Pier this February. All students will be offered the chance to develop their stage skills, voice work and confidence building.

A series of monthly orienteering events are taking place at Pennington Flash Country Park and Haigh Hall Country Park. The Night Challenge is for people aged 11 and above. There must be a minimum of two people per team, and at least one must be aged 16 or over. Cost is ÂŁ2 per person. My Wish List... Firstly, happy New Year! Let’s hope you will all ‘Prosper’ throughout 2014! 2013 has been an excellent year for our investors. With the FTSE 100 and Dow Jones registering YTD gains of 11.1% and 23.8% respectively at the time of writing it is little wonder that portfolios have done well (past performance of course is no guarantee to future returns and the value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise). Investors now need to decide whether the strong performances registered by most equity markets will continue throughout 2014. I see three main drivers that are likely to determine market performance. U.S Tapering - In other words if Quantitative Easing (QE) is tapered, can equity markets continue to deliver gains for investors? Euro Crisis - The majority of the peripheral European countries have not registered any meaningful recovery and debt ratios remain stubbornly high. China Slowdown - Can China smoothly adjust to a slower rate of growth and move towards a more consumption led economy. Whilst there are lots of things for investors to mull over there is a great deal of economic confidence in developed economies. The evidence suggests that the global economy is in a stronger position to improve growth and fight off the deflationary pressures that still exist. So what should investors do? If your list of New Year’s resolutions doesn’t mention an

investment health check, then perhaps you need to add this to your list, because January is a great time to take stock. Is David K Barton your portfolio performing as APFS Cert CII(MP) well as it should be? Are your finances as tax efficient as they could be? It’s not too late to complete your Self Assessment Return Hello and welcome to the latest article from CMA, a proactive accountancy firm based in Appley Bridge. Now that Christmas is over attention turns to completing self-assessment returns. The deadline for submitting your 2013 return to HMRC is 31 January 2014. Any tax that is due for payment must also be made by this date. So who needs to complete a tax return? The following are the main reasons for completing a return: • Anyone who is selfemployed, that is they are not employed and pay income tax via PAYE. • If you are lucky enough to have savings income above £10,000. • If you receive rental income from a property. • Company directors must complete a return. • You have Capital Gains Tax to pay as you have sold an asset.

• You have received income from overseas such as pensions that are liable to UK tx. • If your employed and want to claim for expenses or professional subscriptions. • The recent changes to the Child Benefit system means that any household with someone earning more than £50,000 lose a proportion of the benefit. Households where the highest earner has a salary of £60,000 lose the benefit entirely. Parents who are in this situation must register with HMRC and complete a tax return before 31 Jan 2014. You may have this in hand but if you need any help with this we can complete your SA Return for a special rate of £99 + vat if you contact us before 15 January. PORK & LENTIL BAKE WITH APPLE This meal goes a long way for a small budget, warming and delicious - perfect for a winter supper. Good butchers and some supermarkets will sell pigs cheeks - they’re a great economical cut and become deliciously tender with a long, slow cook. Diced pork is a great substitute.

Ingredients • 180g unsalted butter • 6 sticks celery, washed and chopped • 2 medium sized onions diced • 450g or 8 individual pigs cheeks • 450g cooking apples, peeled, cored and quartered • 3 carrots peeled and batoned • 2 parsnips peeled and sliced thickly • 500ml apple juice • 500ml good stock • 200g puy lentils, rinsed and picked over for any stones • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil

Equipment Large casserole dish

Oven Gas Mark 2 1/2, 150°c

Method Fry the celery and the onion together in the sunflower oil until softened in a large casserole dish. If using pigs cheeks remove any tough membranes or fatty tissue and cut each cheek into 4. Add the pork to the celery and onion and cook until the meat is browned on all surfaces. Add the apples, carrots, apple juice and stock. Finally add the lentils and stir together making sure the meat and the lentils are submerged in the stock. Cook in a slow oven (150ºC/ Gas Mark 2 1/2) for 2 hours. You can cook it for longer and the meat will become even more deliciously tender. If using diced pork keep an eye on it, but 1 hour to 1 and a half hours should be perfect. Taste for seasoning before serving. Adjust as required.

Delph Delights Pub food has come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years. That said, there are still places which still think it is 1985, and doggedly stick to serving prawn cocktail garnished with limp lettuce as standard. Thankfully, The Delph Tavern isn’t one of them. Situated in Tontine, on the outskirts of Up Holland and Orrell, The Delph has already established itself as a great venue for real ales, as evidenced by its listing in this year’s Good Beer Guide. As I made the short trip from Local Life HQ with my colleague Sally, we pondered as to whether its food can scale equally heady heights.

push the boat out further when it comes to the mains. And impressed I was, especially with the exceptionally tasty toasted croutes and tomato chutney. What was even more amazing is that, without even noticing, I started eating the salad alongside it. Normally, the salad is left untouched at the side, but not this time. Sally fancied something a bit different so went for Confit Chicken Wings. Likewise, she was impressed with the succulent, fall-off-the-bone meat, encrusted with a sage and chilli crumb and the accompanying mint leaf salad.

It’s no secret The Delph is very much a traditional pub with matching values as instilled by proprietor Ian Roscoe. Our table was situated away from the

The starters did what any good starters ought to; set us up for the main course. I was intrigued by Rob’s Hotpot, described on the menu as consisting of pan seared lamb rump, hotpot potatoes and a rich, red wine gravy. It didn’t sound like the usual, watery fayre which some places serve up, and when it arrived, I wasn’t disappointed. The lamb was pink, as requested, and rested alongside a delicious selection of sliced

main drinking area, but not too far to lose the genial atmosphere. The menu got the taste buds tingling straight away. Some places simply offer too much choice, a mistake which clearly the head chef, Rob Miller, has no intention of making. For our starters, I chose Chicken Liver Pate, my logic being that it’s such a simple dish and, if I’m impressed with it, I’d feel confident to

potatoes with flecks of carrot. The gravy was extremely flavoursome and, crucially, wasn’t salty unlike at many other places. Sally’s curiosity got the better of her and opted for the tantalisingly named The Tontine, a 6oz homemade burger loaded with bacon, chillies, cheese, egg and red onion marmalade. She was not disappointed, in fact even the day afterwards she was

still commenting to our other office colleagues on the vast array of tastes coming out of just one bun! The burger was complemented by a generous portion of fries, cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crispiness. We were initially tempted to forgo the desserts, but we somehow managed to find room for a Chocolate Brownie with cream and, my personal favourite, cheesecake with ice cream. I commented to Sally about how I hoped it wasn’t a sugar-laden slice of stodge, and I think she equally had similar concerns about hers. We needn’t have worried as once they appeared from the kitchen, it was evident to see these were the more delicate variety aimed at complementing rather than crushing the preceding course. A few mouthfuls later and our worries were cast aside as they gave way to the pleasant, unobtrusive textures. I simply scribbled in my notebook: ‘A pleasant end to a pleasant afternoon’. Having never been to The Delph in my life, over the last few months I’ve now visited it twice and I have to say I have been impressed both times. As I’ve previously proffered, pub food can be a bit hit and miss, so sometimes you can tend to play it safe. To do that at The Delph would be a mistake, as I can confirm the food is as good as you will find in any restaurant. In fact,

when adding the atmosphere and service into the mix, I would venture that The Delph is actually ahead of most. For that reason, it deserves its growing reputation in the gastronomy stakes.

all elements of this walk, I really would recommend a bright, slightly chilly day. If it was too hot, novices like me could find themselves coming a cropper later on when the terrain becomes much steeper, and the low sun lights up the moorland in a way no computer programme could ever hope to achieve.

OK, I will make a confession; the ‘healthier eating plan’ for Christmas didn’t quite work out. It’s the same every year; as soon as someone cracks open the tin of sweets, I’m unable to stop my hands wandering towards the orange creams. Perhaps I should spend next Christmas in blissful solitude up Rivington Pike, where the only temptation is to stay longer and enjoy the beautiful views. At this time of year, the low sun bathes the moorland in the sort of golden glow which is usually reserved for midsummer. We parked in one of the numerous spaces available near Go Ape on Rivington Lane. At the back of the wooden Go Ape building, there’s a path heading towards the reservoir, bounded by some metal fencing. Before long our feet were kicking up the blanket of brittle leaf fall which had carpeted the floor of the woods. Standing proudly ahead are rows of perfectly vertical trees, behind which lie the wide expanse of water. For

We followed the pathway adjacent to the reservoir until we reached the ‘ruins’ of Liverpool Castle. We must have spent a good 10 minutes there snapping away quite happily before realising that time is pressing on, and the glorious sunshine will only be out for another couple of hours or so.

Stepping away from the castle, we took an easterly direction onto a straight, ‘boulevard’ clearing before reaching the junction with Rivington Lane. Bearing right onto the lane, we started noticing sports pitches on the right through the trees. On the left, there’s Rivington and Blackrod School. We went right past the school

Designer Ruins The ‘ruins’ of Liverpool Castle stand on the banks of Lower Rivington Reservoir, and is a quirky feature of the walk. It was built by local landowner Lord Leverhulme in 1912 to remind him of the original castle which, as the name might suggest, was originally situated on the banks of the River Mersey. before taking a straight left onto Roynton Road. This is where the ‘fun’ really starts as it’s the most energysapping part of the walk. The gradient gets steeper and steeper as we started our ascent up to the Pike. Eventually, we came to a fork in the road so we bore right at the Electricity North West sub-station and made our way up onto the knoll. We came across a few sheep happily grazing away. After my previous experiences with cows in Parbold, I was slightly apprehensive.

The original castle is now long gone and what stands at Rivington is a scaled replica showing what it looked like after being severely damaged during the Civil War. The reservoirs here were created to provide water to the city of Liverpool, hence the strong connection. Lord Leverhulme commissioned the replica and never intended it to be finished, therefore recreating the ‘ruins’ look.

However, relief was forthcoming as some stared curiously but the majority didn’t even raise their heads from the lush pasture to acknowledge our existence. The bridleway slowly snaked towards the Pike. This is where the mind plays tricks as the Pike was seemingly close enough to touch, but due to the steepness, it appeared to take ages before I felt I’d got closer to it,. Ahead of us lay the classic walkers’ dilemma; do you take the nice, level but longer path to the summit or do you take the short, but craggy and much steeper route. Being a glutton for punishment, I chose the latter and soon cursed every drink and ounce of food I’d digested over the previous two weeks. It was I guess the ultimate detox I suppose, but boy did I feel it!

The sun was now starting to set over the distant horizon, and there were a few others up there taking the opportunity to savour nature’s matinee. It seemed almost a waste to leave so quickly but at this time of year, once the sun has decided it’s going to bed, then it does so fairly rapidly, and we wanted to get back to the car park before dark. From here, it’s all downhill in the literal sense which, for all my complaining about the steepness going up, was actually hard on my knees and calf muscle. Once past the purpose-built steps, the terrain heading northwards is quite rough, although there is some brief respite around the Pigeon Tower, an elaborate summerhouse built in 1910 which looks onto the Rivington Terraced Gardens.

By now, we were on the home straight towards Rivington Hall. Past here, it was literally a straight route back to the car park. More by fluke than anything else, by the time we got back to the car, darkness had just about descended. In total, the walk took us two and a half hours and was five miles long. We were slowed down by the gradient and also the beautiful views, but that is no bad thing. So having now experienced the solitude of Rivington Pike, it is most definitely on my list for Christmas destinations next year. But the big question Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m now grappling with is can I resist the temptation to take a tin of sweets with me? I can imagine going two weeks without TV, my phone or other earthly possessions, but a Christmas season without the odd orange cream? That could be one New Year ambition too farâ&#x20AC;Ś

To be a record holder at Wigan Rugby, you’ve got to be a little bit special. The list reads like a Who’s Who of All-Time League legends; Boston, Offiah, Edwards and Farrell all feature prominently. Among those is ex-All Black Frano Botica, whose record of 186 goals in one season hasn’t been bettered since being set 19 years ago. It was the culmination of years of hard work for Botica, who joined Wigan in 1990 as part of an exodus of union players switching codes. By the time he left five years later, Botica’s on-field skills and off-field personal charm had won him a special place in the fans’ affections. He’s still regarded as one of the best, if not the best, goal kicker Wigan RL has ever seen. Local Life tracked down the 50-year-old former Central Park favourite to his native New Zealand. Despite not being back to Wigan since leaving, he has very fond memories of the town and its people.

“We had already lived in Italy for two years so we enjoyed the travel and experience of living in other cultures around the world - although I draw the line at mushy peas, pies, chips, gravy and vinegar! “We lived in a quiet cul-de-sac in Hawkley Hall so it was safe for the kids to play. I was a little worried about my reception when I arrived at Wigan but found the public were great, and made me and my family feel at home. This helped to settle into everything and made us feel like we had made the right decision.” During his time at Central Park, Botica notched up 179 appearances, scoring 66 tries and 827 goals in the process. He also became the fastest British-based player to reach 1,000 points, notching up the landmark by his 93rd game. It was during this time he represented his country at League level, including in the 1993 tests which pitted the Kiwis against Great Britain – a match which was, coincidentally, held at Central Park. “I didn’t really know all the rules of League so that was a little difficult, but I loved being part of the success that Wigan had.” Sadly for Botica, his career at Wigan was cut short by a broken leg he sustained while playing for Auckland Warriors in the 1995 off season. Typically, he’s philosophical about it: “When I broke my leg at Auckland, Wigan weren’t that keen on signing a one legged player, so that’s why I ended up moving to Castleford - they took a gamble on me. I ended up

My daughter is currently visiting with my two beautiful grandchildren. My oldest son, Ben, plays rugby union for Harlequins in London while my youngest is having a season in France for the experience. “The last time I was in Wigan was when I was playing, so it is a long time overdue!”

Berkeley Ensemble Wigan Music Society is hosting a concert featuring the ‘Berkeley Ensemble’. Led by Sophie Mather on the violin, it will be held at Trinity United Reformed Church, Milton Grove on Saturday, February 15, starting at 7.30pm. Sophie, who comes from Wigan, is a member of Manchester Camerata and also plays with other leading orchestras. The concert will include music for strings and piano. Now you see it, now you don’t! On New Year’s Eve evening last year, a worried client called ‘Sunrise’ for help, as their lovely Golden Retriever, Basil, had been retching lately and was getting worse. After asking a few questions it became clear to me that there was something more sinister to the symptoms displayed. On the physical examination, nothing remarkable was found. So I decided to take an x-ray view of his digestive tract, and the problem became evident instantly. He had a foreign body stuck across the food pipe further down the throat. It transpired that he had recently feasted on turkey left overs from the Christmas lunch. Obviously, a bone he had swallowed had got stuck. Apparently, it should have been easy to remove the foreign body by retrieving it using appropriate equipment. But, it was critically important to assess the potential risks associated with attempting to retrieve the sharp ended bone, for example it could slip off and lodge itself further down in a more difficult to reach area of gullet in the neck or chest, or it could lacerate the gullet and lead to bleeding, or tear the gullet wall leading to leakage of food and fluids from the gullet, the consequences of which would be worse than the original problem. It was decided that the best means would be to remove the bone by endoscopy. However, should the bone be tightly lodged in gullet and not possible to dislodge safely, a surgical intervention to repair the gullet if a tear developed or to altogether remove the bone by surgical means had to be contemplated. All-encompassing preparation and arrangements were essential before any actual attempt to deal with the problem. Such elaborate arrangements would best be achieved in the normal working hours. Else, the dog had to be moved to a farther specialist emergency centre for immediate veterinary attention. His owner deemed it

worthwhile to take up the option of waiting. Obviously, due thought was given to potential consequences of delaying the intervention! The dog was sent home after receiving appropriate medication to keep him comfortable, calm, and safe, and to be kept under close observation. Before Basil arrived at the surgery in the morning, everything was ready including the endoscopes and surgical kits, and not to forget to mention another senior veterinary surgeon ready to help. Clearly, first thing needed was to re-take Basil’s x-rays. Instead of giving him general anaesthesia for x-raying, endoscopy and possibly surgery, I decided to take the x-rays under sedation only. Guess what, the bone had disappeared, nowhere to be seen over the whole gastrointestinal tract! Surely, Basil will have no more turkey bones this Christmas!

People carriers just aren’t sexy. That’s a fact. But SEAT’s Alhambra is a perennially popular one – for a very good reason. As an authentic Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the almighty Alhambra’s adaptability fits just as well to family necessities as it does to the needs of the milemunching business driver. The sizable SEAT’s sporting spirit and driving enjoyment certainly go hand-in-hand with common sense and originality. And thanks to its unexpectedly lively handling and hi-tech equipment, you can look forward to every mile behind the wheel. With a combined fuel consumption figure of around 50 mpg, the Alhambra SE 2.0 TDI CR Ecomotive 140 PS won’t rob you at the pumps either. The present incarnation of the motor, launched in late 2010, is longer than its forerunner - and wider. There’s plenty of breathing space for adults to sit happily, even in the third row of fold-away seats, whilst the big sliding doors allow fantastically easy access. The load area is charitable, too. It produces good, low down pulling power for such a large vehicle, and efficiency measures such as a StartStop system and brake energy recovery technology come as standard. The stock safety equipment is, like much of the Alhambra, impressive. It involves seven airbags, including a driver-side knee airbag, and electric child locks on the rear doors. Also standard is electronic braking assist, tyre pressure monitoring, and stability aids. Indeed, the award-winning SEAT Alhambra is an MPV with some truly decent features. So it’s no shocker it was not only named Best MPV by Diesel Car, but voted Best MPV in WhatCar? Car of the Year 2011, 2012 and 2013! Such a good vehicle comes at a cost though. This car, bought new, isn’t that far off the £30,000 mark. That’s an awful lot of cash to splash for room and versatility.
