Kind Deeds
In this issue
There are those who think New Year’s resolutions are just another marketing ploy to get the world to part with whatever cash they have left post-Christmas, but we don’t wholly subscribe to that view at Local Life HQ. We see it as a chance to set some goals and to improve your life.

This could mean losing a few inches or giving your liver a bit of respite after those festive indulgences. But if you have room in your life for one more New Year resolution, what about doing a kind deed each day and extending the season of goodwill into 2015? Hold the door open for someone, give up your seat on the bus, let someone out at that clogged up road junction, say good morning to a total stranger. In other words, do your bit to make the world a friendlier place. Someone once described Wigan to me as ‘the sort of place where total strangers converse at the bus stop’, and surely that’s how life should be? If you’ve ever been on the Tube in London, you’ll know that etiquette dictates that you don’t speak or make eye contact with anyone. Sounds like a living hell doesn’t it – trapped underground in a metal box with blank-faced mutes?

Crowning Glory Up Holland High School’s headteacher has had a brush with royalty! Kathryn Barton was invited to St James’ Palace in London to be introduced to Prince Philip as young people from around the country were presented with their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Kathryn was one of a small number of VIPs who the Duke took the time to speak to personally. Kathryn told Local Life: “He told me he was delighted that we were adopting a whole school approach to give all our pupils an opportunity to take part in the Award and thanked me on behalf of our pupils for doing something which would make such a positive impact on them. “The Duke, who is now 93, has lost none of his sense of humour and quickly put everyone very much at ease. I was honoured to represent the school and to be introduced to him in such prestigious surroundings.” Back at the school preparations for the launch of the Award have already begun. All Year 9 pupils will be given the opportunity to start the Bronze Award this month, moving through to silver as they progress to Key Stage 4.
Kathryn meets Prince Philip Kathryn added: “I have every confidence that in three years’ time I will be sending letters of congratulations to our pupils who have successfully achieved their Gold Award.”
Reading Group Wigan Library, on Library Street, is now running a reading group for people who are blind or visually impaired. They take place on the first Tuesday of the month from 10.30am–11.30am. Refreshments provided.

Distributors Wanted
Locals are being urged to recycle their ‘real’ Christmas trees. For those living within the Wigan Council area, trees can be recycled by chopping them up and putting them in their green bin for collection. Alternatively, they can be taken to the household waste and recycling centres at Kirkless in Makerfield Way in Higher Ince, Slag Lane in Leigh and Chanter’s Industrial Estate in Atherton.
Local Life requires distributors aged 13 and above for this edition of our magazine. Distributors will typically work for 2/3 hours every eight weeks. The areas we currently require distributors is as follows:
See www.wigan.gov.uk/recycling for more details. For those living in the West Lancashire areas, trees can also be put into green bins or taken to the recycling centres at Glenburn Road, Skelmersdale, or Abbey Lane, Burscough.

Fovargue. This year’s event was especially poignant given the 100th anniversary of the commencement of hostilities in WWI and the Makerfield MP made special mention of this in her address. Yvonne Fovargue MP said:
Ron receives his Local Life “On behalf of the whole Christmas hamper from MP community across the Yvonne Fovargue Makerfield constituency, I want to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution made by the men and women present today both at home and abroad.” “The First World War was a conflict that changed Britain forever. It touched every family, affected every community and fundamentally altered our country’s place in the world. “The centenary anniversary is a unique opportunity for us to commemorate those who served and sacrificed for us on the frontline and the home front, and to think about the profound impact the war had on our society.”

Fantastic Fundraisers An Orrell grandmother and her daughter-in-law raised over £200 for Wigan Breast Cancer Support Group. Joan Winstanley, of Station Avenue, held an afternoon tea at the Methodist Church, on Church Drive, while Susan, who is married to Joan’s son David, held fundraisers at her two hair salons, Springs Hair in Bryn and The Salon on Ormskirk Road, Pemberton. They presented their cheques to Amar Deshpande, consultant breast surgeon at the Linacre Centre on Parsons Walk, and Catherine Jackson and Rachel Rosser, from the breast cancer care unit, recently. Joan was a district nurse in Orrell for 30 years, working with GPs such as Dr Smith, Dr Wright and Dr Stretch. She retired in 1989 but nursing is evidently in the blood as her daughter, Julie, is a qualified a state registered nurse and works in Warrington. The afternoon tea was held in November and together with her friends, Alison Butlin, Dorothy Walls, Kathleen Parkinson and Norma Goldthorp, they managed to get around 70 people through the door - although Joan says it was so popular, it could easily have been 170! Susan’s daughter, Bethany, who is a make-up artist, also got in on the fundraising act by dressing up in Halloween fancy dress at the salon. Joan said: “Being a nurse, I’ve seen how breast cancer affects people. We wanted to keep the money local

Our group helps many people who have been affected by breast cancer, offering, help, support and advice at a difficult time.” The group meets on the second Tuesday of every month (apart from Januarys) at 7.30pm at The Mercure Hotel, River Way, opposite Tesco. Child’s Play
A report, from the council’s director of economy and skills, covering the financial year 2014/15 has now been presented to councillors but warns: “It is important to note that not all the priorities identified on the list can be completed with the current funds available. The list is used as a tool for Section 106 spend and identifies play areas in most need of investment.”
Play facility improvements worth over £250,000 are being teed up for Orrell, Billinge, Winstanley and Pemberton. Council chiefs have drawn up a priority list on where to spend developer contributions, known as Section 106 monies. The locations listed for improvements are as follows: Play area at Holgate Recreation Ground, Moor Road, Orrell - £80,000
Standish Views
Play area at Orrell Water Park - £25,000
Not got a calendar for 2015 yet? A limited edition of photos by Steve Bradburn from the spire at St Wilfrid’s in Standish are available for £5. Postal rate for the UK will be £6.50, for Europe £8.50, and for the US and Australia £10.
Play area and informal sport pitches at Cobmoor Park, Billinge - £45,000 Play area at St Aidan’s, Highfield Grange Ave - £20,000 Play area at Gayton Close, Winstanley - £40,000 Play area at Highfield Gardens, Billinge Road, Pemberton - £50,000
Money raised will go to the church electrical rewiring project. Orders may be placed now in the church, or at the Parish Office. Call 01257 421396.

His dad, Jim, lived in Latimer Close and taught at the old St Thomas More High School. The St James Orrell parishioner died 10 years ago, aged 56. Danny, who is a father himself to Oliver, aged six, and Isaac, aged two, said: “This charity is particularly close to me as I lost my father to Danny’s late father, Jim renal failure which was brought on by diabetes, and an amputation caused by the disease. He endured three hours of dialysis three times a week and a two hour round trip each time. After giving his life as a teacher and shaping hundreds of young people’s future, this was difficult to watch as he would never enjoy a relaxing retirement. “He was dad to four children; Paul, Catherine, David and myself. Until he became ill, he enjoyed the local pub quiz with his brothers and friends. He also enjoyed the local rugby team.”
It starts with the first race at 7.30pm and there will also be a raffle and disco. Tickets are £6 for adults and £2 for children. Under-fives go free. If any local business would like to contribute a raffle or auction prize, or to book tickets, call Danny on 07841 646461 or Alison on 07540 115761. To sponsor Danny in the marathon, visit www.justgiving. com/DanielAtkinson79. People can also text DAKY99 £5 to 70700.

Danny with son Oliver He continued: “I have raced in two events before this; the Stockport 10 mile and the London Marathon in 2013. I started running in 2009 in a bid to get healthy after seeing my dad deteriorate and have more energy to play with my kids.” Danny, who went to St James and St Peter’s schools and is now a manager at William Hill bookmakers in Widnes, is also organising a fundraising Race Night on Saturday, March 7, at St James’ Social Club, St James Road, Orrell.

Waterloo Memorial Plan A little-known memorial erected in Billinge to celebrate the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo is set to be restored to its former glory. The stone obelisk was placed on Wellington Field in the grounds of Bispham Hall Scout estate, Crank Road, in 1816, by brothers John and Robert Holt. It was granted Grade II listed status in 1966. A proposal has now been received by Wigan Council’s planning department to restore and repair it using traditional methods by skilled stonemasons.
“The value of this asset to the community can be understood through several aspects including industry, leisure and legend. However, through conversation it is apparent that many people didn’t know it exists here, but there is a palpable link. “The Holt Arms gets its name from the Holt Brothers who commissioned the monument - the pub was formerly The Foot of the Causeway after an ancient causeway. “The change of use of the estate in 1948 gave the monument more exposure, especially to those members of the scouting movement using the Wellington Field. “Its present condition necessitates suitable intervention to ensure its immediate safety and protection. Swift action should be taken to avoid further harm and to prevent the structure from eventual collapse.”
In papers lodged by Orrell-based Harris Consulting on behalf of the applicants, the Waterloo Monument Group, it states: “Unlike most, if not all Waterloo memorials, this was commissioned privately. The great age of this monument is apparent through the noticeable weathering (but its) position against a woodland backdrop has protected it from much of the ravages of nature.
Monument Group chairman John O’Neill, who was behind the successful restoration of the Boer War monument in Mesnes Park, told Local Life it was unlikely that works would be completed by this summer – the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. However, they are hopeful it will be ready by 2016, which marks 200 years since it was erected. The group is now in the process of applying for grant funding. A final decision on the application was due to be made by Wigan Council as Local Life went to press.

Loans Advice Residents who turned to payday lenders to fund Christmas and are now worried about their finances are being urged to seek advice from Wigan Council. Over the last five months, figures collected by the council show that residents of the borough owe £166,109,207 in personal loans, which equates to an average household debt of £1,230. During the same period, 1,416 people contacted Wigan Council’s crisis desk because residents didn’t have any money, another 1,583 because they had no food and 263 because they didn’t have gas and electric. During the same period, 814 referrals were made to The Brick, which provides temporary accommodation for homeless people and food parcels, and 534 to the Trussell Trust, which also provides food parcels.
Cllr Terry Halliwell, cabinet member for customer transformation at Wigan Council, said: “Payday lenders and loan sharks may seem like the easy option but what a lot of people don’t realise is the amount of interest they charge. Credit Unions offer a cheaper and safer alternative to help residents borrow sensibly. We also offer money management advice and personal budgeting courses to help people manage their money more effectively. If you’re struggling to make ends meet visit your local Citizen’s Advice Bureau or speak to your local Credit Union for a low cost loan” For more information, visit www.wigan.gov.uk/ moneyadvice. To report a loan shark call 0300 555 2222 or text LOAN SHARK and the lender’s details to 60003.

Keeping Faith
David Sudworth looks at the local links with the fight against religious persecution Remaining steadfast in face of death takes an inner strength which few would manage to muster. Not so John Thules. The Up Holland born priest was hung, drawn and quartered at the gallows in 1616 for the heinous crime of being Catholic. It’s said some last-ditch attempts were made to turn Thules away from his Catholicism. The renowned Puritan rector William Leigh of Standish was brought in to persuade with him but to no avail. Even Thules’ godson offered him £20 a year to renounce his faith, but again he refused. After death, his head was fixed on the walls of Lancaster Castle as a warning to others while other quarters of his body were displayed in Wigan, Preston, Lancaster and Warrington. Such a bloody end was not uncommon for Catholics at the time - recusancy, or the act of refusing to attend Church of England services, was outlawed in 1593.
Lancaster Castle
42
It was the start of a period of persecution which was to last around 230 years. The beginnings can be traced back to serial groom Henry VIII’s desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon. As England was a Catholic country at the time, Henry needed permission from the Pope which, historians say, wasn’t immediately forthcoming. This eventually led to the Reformation which severed ties with Rome and turned England into a Protestant country. Opposition to this was at its highest in the North West, particularly Lancashire. John Thules was born in Up Holland around 1568. There is little known about his life in what was then a very small village. This was literally hundreds of years before St Joseph’s College Seminary was founded, so he went to the English College in Reims, France, to study. In the early 1590s, he was ordained a priest and came back to Britain. Eventually, he got to know a Chorley man called Roger Wrenno (or Wrennall as he is sometimes referred to) and, given that Catholicism was outlawed, he took the unusual step of providing Thules with shelter. It’s said the situation came to light as they were possibly betrayed by a cousin of Thules, and sent to Lancaster Castle. However, it’s claimed they almost managed to escape death by scaling the castle walls and making off.
According to the Documenting Dissent project, which looks at the history of Lancaster Castle and its links with religious and political dissent, the pair seemingly got lost and were recaptured close to the town. The inevitable soon happened, and they were both put to death, but not without the few final twists.
In Rigby’s case, he was caught almost by being too honest. In 1600, he was working for Sir Edmund Huddleston, one of Cambridgeshire’s landed gentry. Sir Edmund’s daughter was summoned to the Old Bailey for recusancy but couldn’t attend as she was ill. Rigby went in her place, and records show he was compelled to confess that he himself was also a recusant.
Wrenno was killed immediately after Thules, but the rope broke and he immediately fell to the ground. The authorities offered him a final chance to convert, but Wrennall was steadfast: “I am the same man I was, and in the same mind; use your pleasure with me.” He was dead less than a minute later.
He was promptly sent to Newgate Prison, which formed part of the wall around the City of London. The next day he signed a confession and, after twice refusing to become a Protestant, was hanged on June 21 that year.
Last year, a film entitled Faith Of Our Fathers: In Search of the English Martyrs was released by Pembrokeshirebased Catholic media company, St Anthony Communications.
St Edmund Arrowsmith
Its managing director Christian Holden, who hails from Preston, said he found the Thules and Wrenno story one of the most inspiring: “It was quite profound that even in the face of death, he actually turned around and ran up the ladder, almost saying that if his executers had seen what he had just seen, an image of God, that they too would be eager to die.”
St John Rigby Another name which is familiar to plenty in the Wigan area is John Rigby. Rigby, who had the Orrell college named after him in 1972, was born at Harrock Hall near Wrightington, around 1570. He’s believed to have been the sixth son of Nicholas Rigby and his wife Mary Breres. John Hilton was, aptly, the college’s former head of history, and wrote about Rigby’s upbringing in his book, Catholic Lancashire: “An individual like John Rigby might be brought up a Catholic then abandon the practice of his faith only to later recover it. “Catholic recusants were led by gentry, though in Lancashire there were an unusually large number of recusant yeomen and farmers, but the overwhelming majority in all classes were women.”
Want to advertise in Local Life?
Another man whose name will be familiar to Wiganers is Edmund Arrowsmith, who was some 15 years younger than Rigby. Arrowsmith was originally was from Haydock, and trained as a priest. His final confession was heard by Samlesbury-born St John Southworth, who was also a prison inmate, and St Edmund Arrowsmith was captured at Brindle Moss he was duly executed by on August 28. His hand was preserved and kept as a relic by the Arrowsmith family. It now rests at St Oswald’s Church in Ashton-in-Makerfield. Both Rigby and Arrowsmith were beatified by the Pope in 1970. The Catholic Relief Act of 1829 is seen as the end of such persecution by the state in the United Kingdom. It may have been much too late for the likes of Thules, Rigby, Arrowsmith, who all paid the ultimate price for their faith. And the sad fact is that, although Britain went through a very dark period which only finished 185 years ago, there remains places in the world today, including small parts of Europe, where religious persecution is still alive.

Locals are being urged to have their say on a report which flags up some health service gaps in the western part of Wigan. The Wigan Borough Health and Wellbeing Board has published its draft Pharmaceutical Health Needs Assessment for consultation. This will provide the basis for planning, developing, and commissioning pharmacy services in the borough for the next three years. Part of the report reveals that all pharmacies except two in the locality are accessible in a wheelchair, and both of these are in Orrell. It also revealed that the Supervised Consumption Service is offered by just under half of the pharmacies in the west of Wigan, but there is no provision of this service in Newtown, Orrell or Winstanley. However, it says pharmacy opening hours provide excellent coverage, all have parking either on site or nearby and all are readily accessible by public transport. Dr Paul Turner, public health consultant for Wigan Council, said: “We are consulting to give an opportunity to interested parties to have a say regarding present local pharmacy services and their future development. The comments that we receive will be used to inform the production of the final version that will be published by April 1. I encourage people to take part in this consultation.” The consultation deadline is Monday, February 2. Visit www.wigan.gov.uk/Council/Strategies-Plansand-Policies/Wigan-Borough-Pharmaceutical-NeedsAssessment-2015.aspx to read the draft document and have your say.

Homes Go-Ahead
Hope Springs Eternal
Permission to redevelop the site of a former Tontine pub has finally been granted. As reported in the last edition of Local Life, revised plans were submitted for the Sandbrook Arms on Sandbrook Road. Initial plans were revealed last summer.
Hope Children’s Centre on Kelvin Grove, Winstanley, has a number of baby-related activities to get involved with. A four week course on baby massage starts on Wednesday, January 14, from 2pm-3pm. If you can’t make that, the same course is running at its Worsley Mesnes branch, inside St James’ School, from 10am11am on Monday, January 12. Both take place weekly and are free but booking is essential. Call 01942 777545.
West Lancashire Borough Council has now given the scheme its blessing, meaning redevelopment of the site for four detached homes can now go ahead. In reaching a decision, the planning case officer said in a report: “I am satisfied that sufficient alternative facilities exist within an accessible distance. I would agree that demand for such a facility can be readily met in the area and that the loss of one public house within this catchment, where others remain, would more likely ensure the continuing viability of the remaining pubs.” The application was granted subject to a string of conditions, including that development must begin within the next three years.
Another four-week course on Baby Moves starts on Monday, January 12, and Tuesday, January 13. These sessions focus on expanding kiddies’ imaginations and having fun with feathers, materials, treasure baskets and much more. The cost for these is £1 per week, and includes a messy play session. And finally, Baby Babble takes place on Thursday, February 5, 12, 19 and 26, from 11.30am-12.15pm at Hope. This is a four-week singing and signing course - booking essential.
Beginners’ Classes Jogging for beginners classes take place on Mondays from 5.15pm-6pm at The Grange Community Complex, Highfield Grange Avenue, Winstanley. The cost is £1 per session and is open to those above 16. For more details call 01942 488489 or email a.griffin@wlct.org

Money & Investments - by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP)
New Year Resolutions! Firstly, happy New Year to all Local Life readers, let’s hope you will all “Prosper” throughout 2015. Apologies for the plug but it’s the only time of year I can get away with it. With a brand new year now underway, it’s the time for New Year’s resolutions and amongst the favourite are, more exercise, dieting and less drink. Sadly, all these involve pain and deprivation, and even the most committed of us struggle to keep those promises going until mid-February. One resolution that you may want to retrospectively add to your list, one which importantly involves very little pain but can have significant benefits is to have an investment health check. Every January I notice a significant increase in the number of enquiries from Local Life readers wanting to review their investments. What prompts this increase? Possibly taking time off at Christmas, end of the tax year worries or the general New Year feeling of optimism. Whatever the trigger though, reviewing and revamping your portfolio now could make a significant difference to your portfolio value. Apart from weeding out the poor performing funds and checking you’re still on track, you might find your finances could be arranged more taxefficiently. I recently chatted to a friend who was moaning about the amount of paperwork he was receiving from all his different investments and his ability to keep on top of this. Potentially the problem was costing him money, because he didn’t know how his investments had been performing.
So I asked him what his “ideal” would feel and look like and this is what he said; He wanted to; • Retake full control of his investments rather than getting swamped with paperwork and information • Have “peace of mind” knowing that an expert was also keeping an eye on his investments • Invest in a wide choice of leading companies without being tied in to a single company/fund • Just deal with “one firm” for all of his different investments rather than having to speak to different companies for his various funds • Have access to his entire portfolio valuation 24/7 without any lengthy telephone calls to numerous call centres, no wading through paperwork or need to wait weeks for an out of date valuation to arrive by post. It probably does not come as a great surprise to learn that Prosper’s Wealth Management Service has the solution to all these issues and more besides. Indeed one of our clients described the difference between the old way of managing investments and using Prosper’s Wealth Management Service as “an absolute revelation”. If you would like to know more about our Wealth Management Service then visit our website www. prosper-ifa.co.uk or email us to request a brochure. The cost for the initial consultation is met by us and you are under no obligation. If you invest in the stock market the value of your investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount invested.

Are you looking for a new independent financial adviser? Due to changes introduced by the Financial Services Authority there has been a reduction in investment and pension advisers. Consequently, there are now even more “orphan” clients than ever that need to seek out a financial adviser that they can trust to look after them over the long term.
Orphan clients? “Orphans” are those investors that have invested capital into pensions and investments a number of years ago who are no longer receiving ongoing advice/guidance.
How can this happen?
We are based locally (on the High Street in Standish) and have been looking after the investment needs of local clients for over ten years.
Our business is designed around the long term interests of our clients and not the short term interest of our advisers. As a result we now review in excess £75 million on behalf of 350 individual and corporate clients throughout the Wigan area and beyond. Are our services suited to you?
• Your adviser has now retired and sold out resulting in you becoming a client of a much larger firm with typically no local presence. • High Street Banks no longer offering financial advice • Advisers moving offshore i.e. Cyprus, to avoid the new tougher regulatory regime.

About Us?
• Do you want someone to advise you rather than being sold to? • Are you about to retire or have you already retired and need an adviser to manage your financial wellbeing throughout retirement? • Have you been orphaned by your previous adviser and been left with investments and pensions that you think may need reviewing? Whilst we do not require a minimum investment level for our services you would ideally have at least £75,000 liquid funds to invest or have existing investments at this level? If you feel that we can be of assistance please do not hesitate to get in touch. The initial meeting is at our expense and is without obligation.

Accountancy - by Chris Alcock ACMA
Do you need to complete a Self-Assessment Return? The decorations are down, the presents are unwrapped, the bin is filled with Quality Street wrappers and you couldn’t eat another turkey sandwich if someone paid you. It’s January!
• You have received income from overseas such as pensions that are liable to UK tax
January is unfortunately known for being quite a depressing month as people come down from the Christmas high, with bank balances having taken a hit and pants being perhaps a little too tight from the over indulgence. And then along comes the worry of selfassessment tax forms to make matters worse!
• You’re affected by the recent changes to the child benefit system - households with someone earning over £50,000 will lose a percentage of the benefit, and households with the highest earner making over £60,000 will lose the benefit entirely. Parents in this situation must register to HMRC and complete a tax return by 31st January 2015.
• You’re employed and want to claim for expenses or subscriptions
The deadline is 31st January so it doesn’t give you long if you have any tax to be paid. Do you need to do one? Do you know where to start? Do you have time? Don’t panic! At CMA Accountancy we are here to help! Do you need to complete a self-assessment tax form? You only need to complete a form if you fall into one of the following categories: • You’re self-employed and you don’t pay income tax via PAYE • If you’re lucky enough to have savings income over £10,000
Sounds a little bit overwhelming? Need to complete your form but not sure where to get started? We can complete this task for you from just £99. However, you must contact us by the 15th January so we can get everything sorted for you by the deadline on the 31st, so hurry - you don’t have long! Have you got any other accounting questions? Don’t hesitate to give us a call, or drop in to see us at CMA on Skull House Lane.
• You receive rental income for a property • You are a company director • You have capital gains tax to pay as you have sold an asset

Party Time!
The choir at St Luke’s in Orrell Winstanley College’s staff choir donned their festive jumpers and headed to St Luke’s Church in Orrell to provide some entertainment at the Orrell & Billinge Network’s annual party for local over 75’s. The 33-strong choir sang 10 seasonal favourites to get the party started and even created a musical conga line around the church hall!
The entertainment also included solos by personal tutor Abby Hollywood and finance assistant Jennifer Eckersley. Talented student, Ellen Gallagher, 17, from Standish, joined in the fun and sang her own solo version of Santa Claus is coming to Town.

Taste Test - by David Sudworth
Eastern Promise... The Delph Tavern is one of those places which, on paper, openly defies logic.
Small, traditional venues like this have been closing at a rate of knots. Indeed, I can think of at least four within walking distance of this Tontine venue’s location which have bitten the dust over the past few years. So what’s the secret to the Delph’s longevity? For landlord Ian Roscoe, it’s pretty straightforward - a brilliant choice of ales, great atmosphere, convenient location and, as I’m about to rediscover, fantastic food. When it comes to offering new dishes, there’s no chance of the moss growing around the Delph’s feet. There’s always something different to try, and Ian’s trip to Vietnam and Cambodia last year was the inspiration for the Delph’s new main course Asian noodle soups. I know what you’re thinking, because I said the same to Sally, who accompanied me on this arduous assignment. “Soups? As a main course?” Of course, I hadn’t banked on the mixture of Ian’s adventurous palate and head chef Rob Miller’s sheer enthusiasm for creating high quality food which, I kid you not, would not be out of place in Manchester or Liverpool’s Chinatown.
60
Ian and Rob worked together on creating three base broths, Vietnamese Pho, Japanese Ramen and Thai Kuai Tioa, which can include a variety of meats from shredded pork and chilli rump steak to duck breast with nori and grilled sea bass and king prawns. Or if, like me, all of this takes your fancy you can go ‘all in’ with the Delph Special. Anyway, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself here - first up was the starters, and for this I chose the ham hock terrine while Sally went for the black pudding fritters. I am a bit fussy about terrine, I’ve had it in its homeland of France and it’s pretty hard to beat. Rob’s take on it is about right; don’t try to imitate the French, but do it as if it were a British invention, which he did with the fantastically flavoursome piccalilli puree and the toasted croutes which were done to absolute perfection. It may sound high falutin, but if simple things like croutes aren’t done right, then in my book it marks a place down immediately,
because it shows lack of attention to detail. Rob’s concentration on this was, as they say in Provence, “magnifique”.
immensely skilful, Rob and Ian have cooked up a menu which is also fun. After all, who the heck has the brass neck to serve up toffee apples with a pork mains? Strikingly, there’s no airy-fairy pretension about any of these dishes, they are just ruddy good quality, simple as.
Sally’s fritters were complemented with a leaf salad and cranberry compote. Again, the fact the fritters weren’t a soggy mess, and the cranberry didn’t set Sally’s teeth on edge through being too sharp, shows that certainly at the Delph, it’s the little things which say a lot.
For dessert, I decided to head back closer to home for a Bakewell slice with ice cream, while Sally went for carrot cake and cream. Again, the flavours in these sweet offerings were a sheer delight. They did exactly what desserts should do; round off the meal without completely overshadowing what you’ve previously ingested.
Now, back to the soup. As I said, I went ‘all in’ for the Delph Special with a Japanese Ramen base. And when the bowl came out, I thought I was at serious risk of my entire body falling ‘all in’ - it was so huge I joked to Rob he should supply armbands with it. Now I’ve had noodle soups before, and let me assure you this is the most authentic I’ve tasted outside of Asia. What makes it is the sheer depth of flavour which starts with the veg and fish stock, which is then heightened through the exquisite use of lemongrass and lime leaves. The fragrance rises from the bowl, carried by the vapour, and fills the nostrils. Its essence is redolent of everything Far Eastern. The meats are fabulously succulent and the thick udon noodles, which wrapped themselves around the smattering of pak choi leaves, gave it added freshness.
As a humble scribe, I’m probably shooting myself in the foot by saying this, but I don’t believe words alone can do justice to the Delph - you have to go to see for yourself. Reason being, how many pubs locally would you expect to have French for starters, Japanese for mains and, err, Derbyshire for dessert? Precisely. That’s just one of many reasons why, unlike others, the Delph is still here and thriving. After my visit, I headed home and started looking up Asian recipes from a book I picked up years ago in Hong Kong. By chance, I happened upon a page which carried the following ancient Chinese proverb Dú wàn juǎn shū bùrú xíng wànlǐ lù which roughly translates as “trying something new often exhibits truly wonderful results.” For my money, when trying to describe the Delph, that’s one maxim which seems to fit perfectly.
Free Bottle of House Wine

While I was busy daydreaming of the Yangtze River at sunset and just why Hai Karate aftershave was so popular in the 70s, Sally was tucking into her trio of pork. This fine dish consisted of braised pigs’ cheeks, prosciutto-wrapped fillet with mustard mash, apple puree, dainty toffee apples and cider jus. What this proved beyond all doubt is that as well as being

Where Are They Now? - by David Sudworth
Highs & Lows... Duncan McKenzie tells David Sudworth about his two weeks with Cloughie, talking French with Cantona and why he decided to jump over a Mini… “Sit down young man. Right, I’ll mark your card for you. First, you’re the worst paid player at the club. And second; all those nutmegs, back heels and flips keep doing ‘em. Don’t change.”
I meet Duncan at his home, a mere stone’s throw away from Haydock Park Racecourse. Although retired from the game for 30 years now, the ex-Everton and Blackburn striker is still in the spotlight thanks to media appearances and a successful career on the after-dinner speaking circuit.
No-one ever accused Brian Clough of mincing his words. But if he had a soft spot for you, you’d be fine. It’s now 10 years since the self-styled Ol’ Big Head died, and a staggering 40 years on since the hard-drinking Teessider was sacked as Leeds United manager after a mere 44 days in the job. Duncan McKenzie, then aged 24, was a Clough signing, and although they only spent two weeks together, his influence on the young player resonates to this day. “He gave me that advice while sat in a pub, just a few hours after he’d been sacked. He didn’t have to say those things but that was the sort of person he was.”

In the 1970s, Duncan’s antics both on and off the field earned him headlines galore. For not only could he produce match-winning performances, he also had a talent for more unusual pursuits including jumping over a Mini and throwing a golf ball the entire length of Leeds’ home ground.

“The Mini thing was as a result of a bet. Years ago, some clubs didn’t have their own training grounds so we used a field which had a hedge around it and an old turnstile. Instead of queueing up and waiting to go through the turnstile, I’d jump over the hedge. “Then, someone said that the hedge was about as high as our trainer’s Mini, so they said they’d give me a fiver if I’d do it. That was about half a week’s wages at the time so I did it. The last time I did it was before a home match at Elland Road. Afterwards, the manager Jimmy Armfield subtly said to me: ‘Very good. Don’t do it again.’ Duncan’s antics provided some much-needed light relief to a club which had gone through a torrid time in the mid-1970s. It started in summer 1974 when manager Don Revie, who had achieved god-like status at Leeds, took the England manager’s job following the departure of 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey. Much to everyone’s amazement, his successor was outspoken Derby County manager Brian Clough. “It was well known that Clough and Revie hated each other’s guts,” says Duncan, over a cuppa in his conservatory. “There’s the famous line about him going to Leeds and telling all the players to get all their medals and trophies and chuck them in the bin because they hadn’t been won fairly. Cloughie thought Leeds were a dirty side. It’s also said that when he saw Don Revie’s old desk he ordered his former secretary to burn it.
I ever got tackled in a match, but afterwards the Forest manager Johnny Carey said he’d seen enough and wanted to sign me. “I signed on my 18th birthday and moved in to digs. It was a big thing at the time, especially as it was a good way from home and leaving a family which struggled for cash, but they bought me a Morris Minor for fifty quid so I’d go home occasionally. Even now, I have such a fondness for Nottingham because everything was a first; my first pint, first visit to a nightclub, etcetera” Duncan spent the first five years of his career at Forest, making over 100 appearances and scoring over 40 goals, before Clough swooped. “It was a completely different experience to me but the bottom line is that, throughout my career, I was a victim of being at clubs which were being skint. Notts Forest sold me because they needed the money. Cloughie paid £240,000, a club record at the time, and that was most of his budget gone, which he thought was ridiculous given all the honours Leeds had won.”
“I think at the time, he was young manager trying to impose himself. He did contribute to his own downfall, but that’s what he was like. That’s why the Derby chairman Sam Longson got rid of him in the first place. Remember, he bought Colin Todd for something like £175,000 but only told the chairman afterwards.” Born on June 10, 1950, in Grimsby, Duncan got spotted at the age of 17 while he was playing for a pub team in Cleethorpes: “I was doing my A-levels at the time. I’d gone to Winteringham Grammar School,. I had a few ideas what I wanted to do for a career, but none of them involved playing football, so it was quite bizarre when I was sent to Nottingham Forest for trials. Dad didn’t want me to play professionally. I think that had something to do with the fact that he worked on Grimsby Docks, and all the ex-Grimsby Town players seemed to end up there as labourers. “While at school, I was into all sorts of sports; cricket, athletics, you name it. I only played for about 10 or 15 minutes in one Forest match because some big galoot came and tackled me. That was probably the last time

Duncan stayed at Leeds for two years
Clough’s well-publicised departure has gone down in footballing folklore, partly because of the messy and public fall-out. Surprisingly, Clough agreed to appear on Yorkshire TV’s Calendar programme just hours after being sacked, only to find himself sharing a platform with his arch-nemesis Revie. In the subsequent interview Duncan was namechecked by Clough himself when forced to defend his ‘big buying policy’ which, it was claimed, unsettled those who had played, and been successful, under Revie. “Cloughie just liked good football and so did I. There was an abject honesty about the way I played. I think in truth he was a bit of a loner, but was also a genius manmanager, which when you put them two together are a bit of a contradiction. I got on great with him, he gave me a bit of gip but that was all part and parcel of it.” After Clough’s exit, Duncan stayed for a further two years and soon established himself as club legend Allan Clarke’s striking partner. In 1976, he was sold to Belgian side Anderlecht but within a few months, he was back on English soil when he signed for Everton. “Because I speak French, I got on very well with everyone at Anderlecht but Everton soon came for me. It was rare in those days to get an English player who could speak a foreign language,. When Eric Cantona was at Leeds I spent ages talking to him in French and at the end the manager Howard Wilkinson said: ‘You’ve got more words out of him in 20 minutes than I have all season’ so I responded: ‘That’s because you could send a glass eye to sleep, Howard!’
trophy for their Player of the Season, even though I only played a handful of games.“ It was while at Everton that Duncan and his Liverpudlian-born wife of 44 years, Dot, put down roots in this area. They bought their home close to Haydock Park in 1977 and their children went to school locally. Andrew, now 40, went to RL Hughes and Byrchall High schools in Ashton while Riah, now 29, went to Nicol Mere in Ashton and then onto Bolton School. Despite moving to Chelsea in 1978, spending three years at Blackburn Rovers and then heading to America before hanging up his boots, Duncan remained both committed to the area and became a solid Everton fan. “Playing at Everton was brilliant, and even to this day I help out with hosting on match days. It’s just a great club and the fans were brilliant. It’s the Scouse humour, which I completely understand. “Our goalkeeper George Wood lived in Parbold and he’d come and pick me up and take us to Bellefield for training. They were a great set of lads and it was going great until Gordon Lee came in as manager. He had no
“I remember it was Jimmy Greenwood, the secretary In action for Everton at Old Trafford at Everton, who came over to Anderlecht to sign me, said it was the first time time for me at all, he thought I was a bit of a luxury so he’d ever seen an entire board go to an airport to wave I went to Blackburn. I had great times there as well but a player off. With my sense of humour, I think they did eventually the Rovers manager at the time, Howard that just to ensure that I’d actually gone, but it was a Kendall, was told to get rid of me because, again, they nice touch. A few months later, they also sent me a were a club who couldn’t afford to keep me.”

After retiring, Duncan ran a fruit a veg shop on Eccleston Street, Prescot, for a short period of time before going into journalism. He wrote newspaper columns, took over from Danny Baker on Radio Five’s 6-0-6 football talk show and also did some commentating. He also briefly became a director of Wigan Athletic in the early 1990s but left after differences of opinion with the then chairman, Stephen Gage. These days, aside from the after-dinner and the Everton work, Duncan loves spending time with his threemonth-old grandson, Oscar, enjoying his gardening and watching the football. Looking back at his career, it’s apparent that Duncan still can’t quite believe he became a footballer: “If I was playing today, I’d be described as a show boater. I wasn’t so much a striker, more like a messer-abouter but that’s because I never expected to be a professional. That’s what gets me about today’s game, you’ve got six and seven year olds who are being drilled by people who
may not even have been naturally gifted themselves in the first place. I never had any of that, we just played for fun. I remember my Everton team mate Mick Lyons being interviewed and he said they could never suss me out, because if we won, I’d be smiling and if we lost, I’d be smiling. I jokingly tell people that I make Dimitar Berbatov look mildly enthusiastic but I wouldn’t change anything. It’s in my nature to see amusement in anything. “There have been some absolutely great players who haven’t been as lucky as me. It beggars belief, a lad from Grimsby ended up playing with some of the best players on the planet and met some of the world’s biggest stars. I remember chatting to Princess Anne at Haydock Park and remember thinking I only live around the corner! “There was also the time when someone tapped me on the shoulder, I turned round and the person said: ‘Hi, I’m Johnny Mathis’. Completely bizarre, but then again football is a bizarre game...”
United They Fall
Joe Dempsie (left) plays Duncan in The Damned United In 2009, a film about Clough’s 44 days at Leeds was released. The Damned United saw Michael Sheen playing Clough, while Duncan was played by Liverpool-born actor Joe Dempsie, star of teen drama Skins. Unlike many former Leeds players, Duncan agreed to co-operate with the makers, and went to see the film at Warrington Odeon when it was released: “I quite enjoyed it actually. I did contact some of the former Leeds players and, although they didn’t want to talk to them film’s makers, they were supportive of me doing it. I’d say it’s about 50% accurate. I think Sheen played Clough very well and when I saw ‘me’ I just laughed. It was very strange, but fun”.

Jack’s Tracks
Mawdesley Moss The terrain between the villages of Croston, Mawdesley and Rufford is as flat as a pancake, but this seven-mile walk has plenty to hold your interest, such as the very best imagery of Croston, the Leeds & Liverpool canal, Rufford Old Hall and those majestic wind turbines on Mawdesley Moss, once the cause of so much grief for the residents of the three
78
villages. Once you leave the confines of Croston though, it’s a walk where you can disappear with your thoughts without getting lost because it’s quite an easy walk to follow, and, with Tastebuds at Fettlers Wharf and The Grapes en route, it’s also a walk where you can enjoy a refreshing pint and a good meal too!
turn right at this point and head towards the level crossing by Finney House Farm. Take great care when you cross the level crossing on the Ormskirk-Preston railway line and make sure you have your dogs on the lead. Carry on down the straights of Finney Lane in perfect solitude for a further ½ mile, until you arrive at a three way junction, take the right junction and go over the concrete bridge with the metal railings. You then follow the right bend near the environment agency site and you will come to the main A581 Southport to Chorley road.
Park up close to the middle of Croston, and find your way to the Grapes pub. Cross the main road into The Hillocks and head over the cobbled bridge over the River Yarrow. Once over the bridge bear right down a single track lane, which eventually turns into a footpath leading to a road (Turflands). When you arrive at Turflands, turn right and follow the road for 250 yards to its T-junction with Drinkhouse Road. Turn left and follow Drinkhouse Road (which becomes Drinkhouse Lane) for 1/3 mile to the outskirts of the village. Once you’ve gone round the left hand bend at the bottom of Drinkhouse Lane, follow the path for 250 yards until you come to a sign saying ‘No Through Road’;
Turn left and go over Great Hanging Bridge. You’ll follow the main road for a rather tedious 0.8 miles and cross from Chorley to West Lancs in the process too. Just as you spot the sign for the A59 you’ll come across Spark Bridge, which carries the road across the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Take right turn downhill immediately before you cross Spark Bridge. Once you get down to the canal, turn left and go under the bridge. You’ll pass the colourful houseboats and a swing bridge before you spot the black and white timbers of Rufford Old Hall on the other side of the canal. Depart the canal at the next bridge and turn left onto the B5246 (Station Road). If you’re peckish or could do with a nice coffee, Fettlers Wharf is just 50 yards on the right hand side, where you can treat yourself to a well-deserved break. Once you’ve sated your appetite, cross the level crossing at Rufford Train Station and then immediately cross the nearby bridge over the River Douglas. It’s really tricky at this point as there’s no pavement, so take that right hand bend carefully and follow the road for a further 200 yards to the first line of trees, where there a public footpath symbol on the left hand side. Follow that path around the perimeter of the field and once you get to the corner of that field, cross over the metal roller and follow the footpath around the right hand perimeter of the next field. Follow that path for the length of that field, cross over the brook on a concrete bridge and carry on in the same direction, going under the wires near the electricity pylon. Once you get to the end of that field, bear right and follow the farm track up to an embankment. You’ll spot another public footpath sign, so take a sharp left turn up the embankment and follow the path on top of the embankment, parallel to New Reed Brook. Carry on walking on the embankment for ½ mile; you’ll

pass a concrete bridge with metal railings and a water treatment works and you’ll eventually come to a single gravel track road (Gales Lane). Turn left and head towards the wind turbines. The gravel track forks, take the right fork, again heading towards the wind turbines. Go past the wind turbines and once you get to the edge of that field where the wooden posts and the grey metal box are, carry straight on towards some fairly modern houses in the distance. After 700 yards, you’ll see that the track bends to the right, so go round the bend and take the immediate left turn, following the line of telegraph poles towards housing. You’ll come across a T Junction; turn right and then an immediate left on Carr Lane and follow this single track road for 0.6 miles towards Croston. Once you pass Manor House Barn (look out for the well in the garden), turn right and then take the next left just before a house called Yarrow Cottage. Go over the Yarrow once more and you’re now at the Old School House. Go under the archway into the churchyard and pass to the left hand side of the church into the picturesque Church Street. The Grapes awaits you at the bottom of Church Street and you’re back where you started.

Test Drive - by Tim Barnes-Clay
Volvo S60 Volvo has never had the same appeal as its German executive cousins. It has never looked as aggressive as Audi, nor as brutal as BMW or as mean as Mercedes-Benz. But that is a good thing. You see, the Swedish marque does things its own way and that’s at the very heart of why motorists opt for Volvo – even though they could, for the same money, afford something a little sexier. Take the S60; it’s very much a thinking man’s car. And that’s not to say that German motors don’t attract intelligent people. It offers some of the most restful, supportive and sumptuous seats on the automotive market. Chairs

you can imagine a college professor sinking into before lighting his pipe and mulling over the day’s events. It’s the kind of car he’ll then cruise back home in while listening to Classic FM. Do you see where I’m going here? The S60 is by no means boring though; it can still satisfy your pleasure sensors. Let’s face it, Scandinavian design is generally pleasing. This is evident in the redesigned interior and exterior of the latest S60. Step inside, and materials, such as wood and leather and the easy-to-use controls, contribute to an ‘incommand’ driving experience. The overall effect is warm and cosy, like being in a Swedish house on a cold night. The car’s colour themes correspond beautifully with the backlit white controls in the dash and elsewhere in the vehicle.
On the outside, the S60’s road presence has been increased by a new front design. The more focused and determined-looking headlamps help create an expressive face. The car’s horizontal lines at both the front and rear have been emphasised. Together with details such as a wider grille, daylight running lights and LED tail lamps, they give the S60 a handsome, roadhugging presence. The Volvo saloon has a beauty that appears rooted in the natural world. The clean surfaces and contours give it a very classy feel.
and updates as well as a Volvo service locator. It is also possible to share a WiFi network with everyone in the car.
Enhancements for the S60 include ‘Sensus’. This is the name Volvo uses for all its HMI (Human Machine Interface) functionality and the all-new Sensus Connected Touch accessory is the latest addition. It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the seven-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter.
With environmental credentials like these, any selfrespecting, Volvo driving, college professor will have to put his pipe out now.
Connection is made either via a car-mounted 3G/4G dongle or your mobile phone. It allows you access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, on-line Google Map and Search, weather information, an App Store for new functions

Volvo is certainly pushing at the technological boundaries now – and that’s including one very important area of motoring: fuel efficiency. The fuel consumption of the S60 D2 diesel, on test here with a manual gearbox, has been improved to a class-leading 72.4 mpg, translating into CO2 emissions of only 103 g/ km.
FAST FACTS • Max speed: 121mph • 0-62 mph: 10.9 secs • Combined mpg: 72.4 • Engine: 1560cc 4 cylinder 8 valve turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 113 at 3600 rpm • Max. torque (Ib/ft): 199 at 1750 rpm

Garden Diary - by Angie Barker
Room with a view... Happy New Year everyone! I hope that Father Christmas brought you everything you wished for – and more. We had a lovely time and Hubby excelled himself this year in the present buying category – not a single gift receipt was required. It has only taken him 27 years but he has finally remembered my bra size! Back to gardening. January is a strange time of year to write a garden diary but my best advice for this time of year is to curl up in front of the fire with a glass of left over mulled wine and have a browse through a good gardening book or magazine. You are bound to get some inspiration for the forthcoming year and it will help to take your mind off the impending credit card bill and post-holiday blues. The views of your garden from the house are at their most important at this time of year because we will be

spending more time looking at the garden from inside, than being out in it. The most important views are likely to be from the kitchen window above the sink and patio doors in living rooms and dining rooms and of course any conservatory windows. They may not be limited to these though. I designed a garden earlier this year for a lady whose elderly father lived with her and an important part of the brief was to include a nice view of the garden from his bedroom window. Placing a focal point within your view - something as simple as a bird bath for example – immediately draws the eye and gives that space a sense of purpose. And if your view is of a flat and empty border, plant some evergreens, there are lots which give colour at this time of year as well. An important rule of garden design is that you don’t see the garden all at once so don’t worry if you can only see part of your garden from your view, this will encourage further exploration when you get out into the garden. So let’s look forward to the future and to another year of happy gardening!

A View From The Lump Local gossip, gripes and goings-on Family Ties Publicising your family tree to all and sundry is now fashionable thanks to TV programmes such as Who Do You Think You Are? It might be alright for all these media luvvies with a ‘diverse back story’, but being of the lower order, I wouldn’t have much to offer. Maybe they could focus on my old Uncle Aubrey, a jolly soul who was adept at telling racist jokes, sinking pints of mild and had a chest which rattled like a pinball machine in an empty house due to his 60-a-day Senior Service habit. However, unlike The Lump, a number of Wigan councillors clearly aren’t equally as embarrassed by their kith and kin, and indeed work cheek by jowl with them in the Council Chamber. Turns out there are several such family councillor groupings, most of them on the Labour side. Take
for example Orrell councillor Kelly Ready. She sits on the authority with her dad, Chris, an Aspull councillor who is also a member of council leader Lord Peter Smith’s cabinet. Elsewhere, other family political connections include Orrell’s Cllr Stephen Murphy and Pemberton’s Cllr Sam Murphy. And don’t forget husband and wife duos, Paul and Jeanette Prescott (both Pemberton); Clive and Marie Morgan (both Winstanley) and Paul Kenny, who is a councillor for Winstanley, while his wife, Yvonne Fovargue is the MP. However, it’s not just Labour councillors who ‘keep it in the family’ so to speak. There’s the Fairhurst trio, Gareth, George and Debbie, who are independents in Standish, . Of course, there’s nowt wrong with any of this, and many nearest and dearest sit together on councils up and down the land. Maybe the time has now come to reduce the number of councillors. Because until that happens, it will continue being rather apt to misquote the famous phrase: “You don’t have to be dad to work here, but it helps!”
Food For Thought The Lump laments how we’re fast becoming a 24/7 society. However, praise where it’s due, for even the High Priests of Fast Food stopped for the recent festivities. Well, 36 hours of it to be precise.
Indeed, I’m informed McDonald’s round-the-clock outlet at Marus Bridge ceased serving Big Macs from 9pm on Christmas Eve until 8am on Boxing Day. The Lump has unofficially boycotted these sort of places ever since I was looked at strangely by one staff member years ago for simply asking why they hadn’t provided me with a knife and fork for my food. “You’re supposed to eat it with yer fingers,” came the unenthusiastic reply. Since then, I have only dined in places with cotton napkins. On reflection though, maybe I was a tad snooty about the lack of a knife and fork. It was, after all, only a donut...
And Finally... At this time of year, I always like to make a few predictions for the next 12 months, usually safe in the knowledge nobody will know if I’m wrong apart from me. But now I’ve been granted a column in this esteemed publication, and therefore ordered to share them as part of my contractual obligations, I don’t have such luxuries. So here goes: - Wigan Warriors to win Super League - Latics to remain in the Sky Bet Championship after a close shave - The Marus Bridge roundabout roadworks, due to start soon, to be labelled ‘chaotic’ by local hacks at least once - Lazy national journalist publishes article about Wigan complete with the usual clichés about piers, pies , Orwell and George Formby. A Happy New Year to one and all...
