Whilst the whole nation has been basking in the glory of our surprise summer, I hate to admit that I have been secretly praying for snow! It’s not that I’m a big fan of the Winter Olympics or anything, but at nearly eight months pregnant this heat isn’t doing much for my ankles!

Cycle Sisters Coming up with ideas about how to raise money for charity can be difficult, but this wasn’t the case for six local women who decided to saddle up, get on their bikes and raise some much needed cash for the Heswall Disabled Children’s Holiday Fund (HDCHF). The team consists of Sue Ingham, Jacqui Campbell, Paula Neary, Pat Neary, Nicola Edwards and Tracy Monckton; and their year long quest to raise some funds started last year when they heard about the charity and their 25,000 mile challenge. HDCHF hosts a completely free week-long summer camp each August for up to 30 boys aged 8-15 years, from North West England, who have physical disabilities - but to do this they need to raise in excess of £25,000. So Sue gathered together her sisters and friends and they decided to take in the sponsored cycle ride. The aim is to raise a minimum of £2,500 by cycling 25,000 miles over 12 months – to give you a better idea of distance, this is more than the circumference of the earth! The event started on 4th November 2012 from Barnstondale Centre on the Wirral, where the summer
18
camp takes place. Each member cycles individually, logging their miles as they go as well as entering team events. To date the girls have cycled more than 13,000 miles and have raised £1,250 towards their target. They have another 15 weeks to go and aim to finish the event on Sunday 3rd November, with all the team cycling from Up Holland to Kirkby. If you would like to sponsor the team then please go online to https://mydonate. bt.com/fundraisers/spendapennysponsoramile
The Good Life Show If you’re after a bit of the good life then get down to Haigh Hall this Saturday (24th August) because Wigan Allotment Society will be hosting their second ‘Good Life Show’. The society are inviting you to come down and join them to celebrate all things home grown from 11am-4pm; so whether you’ve got a small garden of your own or a dedicated allotment, you can pick up some great tips on how to use the space to grow healthy and nutritious food. Activities on the day include demonstrations on the basics of building a garden, how to turn fruit into jam, recycling, composting and how to create your own organic crops. There will also be lots of family fun to be had on the day including Victorian fun and games, traditional crafts, a circus school for the kids and also The Great Wigan Bake Off!
The show has also been organised to give people the opportunity to find out more about securing land, or helping out on nearby growing projects – so a number of allotment holders from the Wigan Allotment Network and the Orrell Transition Group will be on hand to chat to you about your options. For more information about the show please have a look online at www. wiganallotmentnetwork.org.uk

Charity Concert
Up Holland Art
Members of St Teresa’s Church in Up Holland will be hosting a charity concert on Saturday 19th October to raise much needed funds for Nugent Care. The charity offers a diverse range of support to adults and children in some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities across the North West. The classes have been running during term time over the last three years and members can learn how to use all mediums including mono-printing and water mixable oils. The course is very friendly and students range from beginners to talented amateurs; everyone can gain confidence.
The Charity Concert will feature entertainment from the Three Town’s Operatic Society and will be held at the Parish Club on College Road from 7.30pm. Join the Towpath Taskforce by Nicola Gray Cutting through the heart of Lancashire, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal played a starring role in the industrial revolution; thousands of men worked day and night to create what was considered the motorway of the steam age. Transporting huge quantities of goods, canals were the lifeblood of the North West, fuelling commerce and industry wherever they reached. The days of transporting coal and cotton along the canal may be a thing of the past but our waterways are enjoying something of a resurgence; they are no longer a dumping ground for old prams and supermarket trollies. There are said to be more narrow boats on the canals now than at the height of the industrial revolution and today they form the backbone of our leisure and tourism industry.
Like many people that step on to the canal banks, we are guilty of taking for granted the work that goes into keeping our waterways in ship-shape condition. This is something that the Canal & River Trust has been working hard to combat since they took over the care of the Leeds Liverpool Canal in July 2012; and now it’s your turn to get involved. Volunteers and communities in
22
Wigan are being given the chance to adopt a one mile stretch of canal or river to call their own! Steven Broomhead, partnership chair for the Canal & River Trust’s North West region told Local Life: “We should remember that it doesn’t matter how much money, time and effort we all invest in caring for our precious waterways, they will only survive in the long term where local communities take pride in them and help us improve them. We need more people to follow the example of existing community groups who are getting out and caring for their waterways.” If you fancy rolling up your sleeves and getting involved you may find yourself helping out with everything from recording and improving wildlife habitats or maintaining a local towpath, to helping to fundraise and running educational events. And let’s face it, this is a great opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy some of the beautiful Lancashire countryside that surrounds us. Wigan already has its very own group; The Douglas Valley Lions have adopted a 2.2mile stretch of the canal from Parbold to Appley Bridge. They can be seen out on the canal banks once a month making the area a much nicer place for local residents to while away their time. Their tasks include litter picking, reporting any problems and the group is already planning their next project; later in the year they will be tackling the railings and fencing along the canal, sprucing them up with a much-needed lick of paint. The Douglas Valley Lions Club is a men’s only club, so if any strapping chaps would like to donate some of their time you can get in touch by calling 0845 833 5739. The Canal & River Trust are also on the lookout for individuals who would like to start their own volunteering groups and also for people to join the Towpath Taskforce – if you would like more information please contact 0303 040 4040, e-mail volunteer@canalrivertrust.org.uk or go online at www. canalrivertrust.org.uk/volunteers.
Leeds & Liverpool History
www.locallife247.co.uk
The Leeds & Liverpool Canal extends for a total of 127 miles across the Pennines and was constructed over a period of 46 years (1770-1816) with various sections becoming operational at different times during the construction period. From Liverpool the canal ascends to its summit level of 148.5 metres above sea level, descending again to terminate in Leeds at an elevation of 36.5 metres. To achieve these changes in level the canal has a total of 91 locks. During its working life the canal was a major transport system carrying all manner of cargoes for the businesses and communities along its length including coal, wool, cotton, limestone, grain, guano, manure, farm produce and general goods.

Why is it important to instruct a solicitor? You have been involved in a road traffic accident, that wasn’t your fault. You call your insurance company to inform them of this and before the end of the day you have received several unsolicited calls from people seeking to assist you with your claim. Before the end of the next day you have received a call offering you a sum in settlement of a claim for injury if you will make a settlement now and not take the matter further.
companies try to force you into their recommended garages – which may not even specialise in your vehicle make or model – without a solicitor you face following an internal complaints procedure, which may ultimately may not give you the end result that you are hoping for. A solicitor on your side means that you have someone who will fight for your rights and compensation all of the way to a Court room if necessary and this means you are much more likely to get what you actually deserve as quickly as possible.
So why bother to instruct a solicitor or take this further if all it is going to mean is that you will be hassled by strangers and spend precious hours in your already busy day dealing with it? The first and most important piece of advice is do not accept the offer made to you over the telephone without seeking legal advice. If you accept this offer you cannot go back and ask for more compensation, even if it later transpires that you have a permanent injury. The next issue may be the repairs to your car. It is often the case that these are not done to a high standard, or an insurance company may claim that you can only have your repairs undertaken at their own recommended garages. This is just not correct or acceptable; however as an individual against a large corporate insurance company fighting just this sort of treatment you will be facing an uphill struggle.
At Craig and Co we specialise in personal injury claims of all types. We guarantee that your claim will only be dealt with by an experienced member of staff who will listen to your concerns and deal with your claim as quickly and efficiently as possible.
How would a solicitor really help in this situation?
We act on a “no win no fee” basis.
A solicitor would never advise you to settle an injury claim without obtaining a medical report. This is because the symptoms of whiplash type injuries (which are the most common in road traffic accidents) can vary and fluctuate. You may feel fine for a day or two after a collision only for pain to creep up on you in the week after the incident. These symptoms may then go on to be present intermittently for several months or even years.
If you have been involved in an accident call us on 01942 211670 to discuss any potential claim with our local, experienced team.
If this is the case the early settlement of compensation will most definitely not be enough to adequately compensate an individual in these circumstances. It is only a doctor who can accurately predict how long symptoms will last for. Once a claim has been settled it cannot be re-opened as the compensation received was unfair or did not accurately reflect the symptoms suffered. This is why it is extremely important to obtain legal advice before settling any claim. Mistakes cannot be rectified at a later date. If your repairs are delayed or carried out to a below average standard or insurance

Educating Rita Wigan Little Theatre’s season will kick off with a performance of the modern classic Educating Rita. Frank is an English tutor whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to seek refuge in bottles of whisky that he hides on his bookshelves. Rita is a feisty Liverpudlian hairdresser who is hungry to know everything. With Frank as her tutor, Rita embarks on an Open University course and her education begins – the effects are both amusing and serious as her fresh, intuitive approach becomes stifled as she grapples with the problem of formal education geared to the passing of her exams. The production runs from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 14th September at the Crompton Street Theatre. Bookings can be made by telephoning the box office on 01942 242561 after Monday 26th August. You can also book your tickets in person at the box office or by completing a postal booking form, which you can download from the website at www.wiganlittletheatre.co.uk

Transition Group The Community Good Life Fair was a runaway success back in June, when the local community and local businesses came out in force to support the Billinge and Orrell Transition Group. There was lots of family fun had on the day including stalls, woodcraft skills, a cycle workshop and advice on vegetable growing to name but a few attractions. The biggest draw of the day was a guess the weight competition, where participants had to guess the weight of a magnificent looking cake made by Ann Bowyer from local business Cakes and Memories. Visitors were guessing in their droves and the winning guess fell with Rachel and Geoff Rigby from Windy Arbour Farm Shop in Billinge. Geoff told Local Life, “The day was really well attended and everyone had a great day – we entered the competition with a guess of 8lb 3oz. “We are expecting a little boy at the end of August so I went with the weight I thought the baby will be. The actual weight of the cake was 8lb 1oz and Geoff added, “We were delighted to win the cake, we stock some of Ann’s cakes in the shop so we know how good they are. “The whole family loves fruit cake so once we’ve made that first cut I’m sure it won’t last very long”. For more information about the Orrell and Billinge Transition Group or to find out more about future events please have a look online at www.billingeorrelltransition.org.uk or by phoning Mandy on 01695 632825.

Haydock’s History by Nicola Gray
A day at the races in 2013 promises glitz, glamour and let’s face it, the odd betting slip! And over the years not much has changed, as well as providing a great day out, our racecourses have long and illustrious histories and there is a thoroughbred example right on your doorstep! Haydock Park Racecourse can trace its roots back to 1344 – when Sir Gilberte-de-Haydocke founded the original Haydock Park under the Royal Charter of Edward III. The area of Haydock Park covered Haydock Park Farm, Haydock Park Golf Course, Haydock Lodge and Haydock Park Racecourse. The racecourse just off the East Lancashire Road still retains much of the atmosphere of a park, a reminder of the days when it was in possession of the Leghs. The Legh family purchased Haydock in 1660 from the Fleetwood family, and later took the name of Newton from their local connections; they were also heavily involved with the nearby Newton Races. Although the area for the racecourse existed it was just parkland and wasn’t used for race meetings. Instead, races were held a few miles away on an extensive stretch of common known as Golborne Heath. Evidence shows that the Newton Races started around
38
1680, and apart from a short break in the 1820’s, they continued with a great following until 1898. It wasn’t until 19th February1898 that the Haydock Park Racecourse Company was set up with a capital of thousands of pounds split into £50 shares; Lord Newton agreed to lease 127 acres of land to build the racecourse and the rest is history! The following year, the very first Haydock Park meeting was held under the new hunt rules, and there was a flat race held under the new Jockey Club rules in May and August of the same year. Haydock Park is now one of the most used racecourses in the country with races taking place on 33 days of the year. The Sport of Kings has been around for thousands of years and hopefully for thousands to come, so next time you’re having your beehive backcombed for ladies day consider all the fillies that have gone before you!
Old Newton Cup Day The Old Newton Cup is Haydock Park’s longest standing race and the history of the race goes back beyond the development of the track! The Newton Races had thrived since the 18th Century often seeing the Royal Family in attendance at many of the meetings. The race was famous in horse circles; run over a mile and a half the race eventually became known as the ‘Old Newton Cup’.

Book Cycle Donation Book-Cycle, the charity organisation that has moved into the old Orrell Library, has been enjoying the full support of the local community since they opened in June. The charity relies on donations of books and other learning materials to be able to continue their work in the community and the latest donation came from the generous folk at Winstanley College. The College recently donated a bank of computers for the charity to put to good use in their Orrell base, and they will be made available for people to come in and use. Book-Cycle volunteer Sakeenah Feghir told Local Life, “The computers that were donated by Winstanley College are a great addition to Book-Cycle Orrell and will allow IT access for many people especially those who do not have the facilities at home. As with all of the BookCycle services, they will be run on a donation basis.” Mel Chadwick, Vice Principal of Winstanley College told Local Life, “Book-Cycle is a fantastic charity and we are delighted to donate these computers and make a small contribution to the great work that they do.” BookCycle is always on the lookout for volunteers so if you are interested in helping out or would like to make a donation please contact 01942 747750. However, rail travel allows you the freedom to spend each moment as you wish. Far from a herded coach tour experience, a Great Rail Journeys holiday is about being a member of a travelling group of individuals. You’ll enjoy the comfort, security and sociability of travelling in a group – but also the
freedom to be as individual as you like. Immerse yourself in a crossword, absorb yourself in the passing scenery or spend the day away from the group pursuing your own interests. Your Health
A healthy altitude I hope that you have all being enjoying the lovely scorching summer we’ve had. For those of you who still need to fly somewhere even more exotic than Costa del Lancashire, I think it’s time to make sure you’re up to date with keeping yourself healthy in the skies. Many of you will have heard of DVT (deep venous thrombosis) which can cause illness and even kill. Not the best way to start a holiday, I’m sure you’ll agree. However, whilst DVT’s are more likely after long haul flights, they can also be quite common in sedentary people at home. So what are DVT’S? DVT’s occur when a blood clot occurs within a vein, usually in the deepest veins of the leg. The blood clot can cause pain, swelling and changes in colour of the leg. Things worsen if this blood clot travels to the lungs; this is known as a pulmonary embolism and kills some twenty five thousand people per year in the UK. There are a number of medical conditions which can predispose people to DVT’s. If you have a history of recent surgery, cancer, heart and lung disease, some blood coagulation disorders, pregnancy and some medications, please see your GP before flying. How can I prevent DVT’S? For my chiropractic patients who are about to go on holiday, I always recommend that they move around by walking as much as possible in the days leading to their holiday, and the rest of the year too. This prevents blood from pooling in the legs. Whilst on the flight, get up and down at least each half hour, move your feet in your chair and definitely tap your feet to whatever’s on your iPod. You should also drink plenty of water anyway, but being especially well hydrated before you fly cuts the risk of DVT – so don’t overindulge in the all-inclusive alcohol just before you fly home again. You can also make a fashion statement by wearing compression stockings, though maybe not with shorts! Have a happy, healthy summer. Dr Mike Paull, Chiropractor.

Money & Investments - by David K Barton APFS Cert CII(MP)
Ten Years On What a summer! Record temperatures, Murray wins at Wimbledon, The British Lions turn over the Aussies, England retaining the Ashes and last but not least Prosper IFA Ltd has just had its most successful year since launching 10 years ago. I guess the last fact has probably slipped under the radar for most of you but you can’t blame me for giving it some air time. How the Murray win, the comprehensive retention of the Ashes and British Lions successes have been achieved are well documented. So why has Prosper had a record year in attracting new clients and funds? Whilst it is difficult to pin point the reasons I believe that one or a combination of the following has played a significant part; • Financial Conduct Authority Changes The retirement of other advisers and closure of a number of local financial advice firms due to the rule changes introduced in January 2013. Clients of these advisers still needed “independent” professional financial advice from a local firm. • Financial Advisers moving their businesses overseas Some advisers have moved into a non-UK Jurisdiction e.g. Cyprus for example, to avoid the impact of the new regulation. Clients of these firms really wanted to maintain the comfort of having the
more robust UK regulatory protection and therefore wanted to move their existing investments and pensions to a UK based adviser. • Banks Withdrawing from the Advice Market Following the changes introduced at the start of 2013, most of the High Street banks stopped offering investment advice, meaning many clients who have invested through their bank no longer receive any guidance on their investments. • Poor Interest Rates Traditional savers have become frustrated with the low interest rates and have decided to accept an element of risk in order to potentially improve their returns. • Prosper achieved Corporate Chartered Status in 2012 Since Prosper achieved this prestigious award in July 2012, an increasing number of local law and accountancy firms are now introducing their clients who require wealth management services to us • We’re on the High Street Having been on the High Street in Standish since 2007, new clients tell us that they have taken comfort in the fact that we have maintained a strong presence despite a number of other businesses coming and going in the local area during the last few years

• Improving Market & Economic conditions The concerns around systemic failure in 2008/9 now seem to have abated and central bank policy to support the markets has resulted in stock market recovery and improving economic data. Whatever the reasons I am delighted to report that we intend to continue growing the business and we are currently in discussions with a number of industry professionals that are looking to join and strengthen our team. So what about the future for the financial advice firms and their clients? All Local Life readers that have been left without an adviser, are considering changing their adviser or wish to take up the services of a financial adviser for the first time really need to do their homework before making their final decision. When choosing a financial adviser, it’s important to understand what type of service you’re getting. Independent versus ‘restricted’ advice From 1st January 2013, professional financial advisers fall into two categories - independent and restricted. It’s important to understand the difference - it can have a big impact on the type and range of advice you’ll get. Find out what this means and how the adviser charges for their services Qualifications and experience All financial advisers must have a qualification at Level 4 or above of the National Qualifications and Credit Framework. In addition, they must hold a Statement of Professional Standing, which confirms that they are suitably qualified, that they subscribe to a code of ethics and have maintained competence through continuing
professional development. Ask your adviser what level of qualification they hold. If you have any doubts, check with the relevant body. Where should you start? Unbiased.co.uk is a very useful website. It will provide you with details of advisers in your area and more importantly allows you to critique your selection on the basis of type of advice and the qualifications held by the advisers. In brief: We offer “Independent” Financial Advice. Prosper are Wigan’s first and only Corporate Chartered Financial Planners and we look after £75million on behalf of 350 personal and corporate clients. Should any Local Life readers who have investable assets over £75,000 want to talk to us or would like a copy of our corporate brochure please do not hesitate to get in touch. The first meeting is without obligation and is at our expense.
Choosing a financial partner maybe the most important decision you’ll ever make. • Investment and Pension Reviews • Portfolio Management • Annuity Advice • Inheritance Tax/Estate Planning Advice • Trustee Investment Guidance

Beat Extravaganza
Rugby Team Needs You!
Following on from the success of the last three Beat Extravaganza events at St James’ Social Club, which have raised more than £10,000 for Dr Naqvi and MacMillan Nurses, Pauline Lloyd is organising what she hopes will be another sell-out event. Beat Extravaganza 4 will be raising money for the same deserving causes this year so dig deep and get involved.
The Military and Military Veterans RUFC would like to hear from anybody interested in joining their ranks. The team has been formed to help service personnel who are struggling to adjust to civilian life, especially if they are suffering from post-traumatic stress.
Local artists who have agreed to donate their time are Andie Dee and Parky and Ronnie and friends. The show will be held once again at St James’ Social Club on St James Road in Orrell on Friday 18th October starting at 7.30pm. There will be raffles for prizes donated from local people and businesses, and you can bop til you drop to some great music on the night. Pauline told Local Life, “The last three events have been a complete sell out, and numbers are again limited this year, so please make sure you book your tickets. We would just like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in making this a huge success and we look forward to seeing you on the night.” For more information or to book your tickets please call Pauline now on 01695 623427 to reserve your £10 ticket.
Stephen Hawkins, who founded the group, told Local Life, “I have seen first-hand how damaging posttraumatic stress can be and I also know how important sport can be in helping that healing process. “Playing Rugby especially also gives a productive outlet to pent up frustration and aggression and the team allows those currently serving and former servicemen to come together and share their experiences and offer support as well as sharing their camaraderie.” The team currently play and train in Shevington and membership is open to anyone who is serving or has served in the Armed Forces no matter where they live. The team urgently needs new players and sponsors –so if you would like to join the team or would like to help with the sponsorship then get in touch with Stephen on 07968 928739 or e-mail stephenhawkins6799@yahoo. co.uk

Accountancy - by Chris Alcock ACMA
Top Tax Saving Tips Everyone likes to save money and it is surprising how few people actually take any steps to reduce their bills. However, if you take a pro-active approach to tax there is no reason why you can’t make significant savings.
10 Top Tax Tips 1. Check Your Tax Code – Most individuals pay their tax via the PAYE scheme. Your tax code determines how much tax you pay each time you are paid so make sure it is correct. The basic code the current year is 944L. 2. Business Mileage – If you incur business mileage as part of your job make sure you are claiming these back at the correct rate. The approved mileage rate is 45p per mile and if your employer reimburses at a lower rate you can claim tax relief on the difference. 3. Other Business Expenses – There are some expenses that you can claim tax relief against if you don’t get them reimbursed, such as teacher’s union subscriptions. These claims can be back dated for up to 4 years. 4. Consider Salary Sacrifice Schemes – There are a number of schemes where employers could offer you a benefit other than a salary. These include child care vouchers and even a scheme to help you buy a bike to travel to work on. 5. Company Cars – If you enjoy the benefit of a company car, consider a car with a low CO2 emission value or look at the option of a car allowance rather than the car itself. Also, if you
receive the benefit of private fuel, then do look at whether this is actually worth the tax that you pay on the benefit. 6. Use your Pension Contribution – Pension contributions are exempt from tax, so you can reduce your income tax by putting extra cash into your pension. 7. Rent a Room – If you are a home owner with a spare room you may be able to benefit from the rent-a-room scheme where you can receive up to £4,250 tax free. 8. Buy to Let Expenses – If you rent a property out, remember to claim all your expenses incurred in connection with the property. This includes mileage expenses visiting the property, the cost of gardeners and repairs and the interest on a mortgage. If you make a loss on letting property, remember to offset it against future profits. 9. Working From Home – If your employer asks you to work from home you can claim an allowance of £4 per week towards the cost. 10. Choose Tax Efficient Savings – Simple steps like using up your ISA allowance can save considerable money.

Taste Test
Alfresco Dining Eating out is as much as a feast for the eyes as it for the taste buds, and first impressions of a pub or restaurant can go a long way when it comes to parting with your hard earned cash! So when the weather is fine and you fancy some really good pub grub where do you go?
We set out from Local Life HQ in search of a bit of summer-time alfresco dining that would leave our stomachs full and our wallets not-so-dented; when we stumbled across The Colliers Arms in Kings Moss. The pub doesn’t look much from the outside but in the interests of trying something local we ventured inside to have a look at what was on offer. The spacious pub can only be described as traditional; true to its local roots the inside is adorned with mining memorabilia. It is a comforting sign however, when on a Thursday afternoon the dining area is full of locals enjoying a good meal; so far so good. We had another
58
pleasant surprise when we took our menus outside and discovered a secluded cottage garden complete with its own herb patch, some of which found its way into our freshly prepared dishes. For a starter I went for the Bury Black Pudding served with a pepper sauce and a crusty roll. Now we weren’t expecting much in the way of presentation and the Colliers Arms won’t be attracting its fair share of ‘tweeter eaters’ – diners who have to take pictures of their meals in restaurants and then post them on Twitter. But once I sunk my knife and fork into the dish, all was forgiven anyway!
The Black Pudding was served as a full sausage, but this wasn’t the horrid dry, black disc you normally push to the side of the plate when tucking into an all-day breakfast. This black pudding was delicious with a very soft appealing texture and the creamy pepper sauce was perfectly understated and worked hard not to overpower the dish. Julie opted for the Smoked Haddock Fishcake served with a salad and tartare sauce, the fishcake arrived and
the smoky aroma of the haddock was what hit us first –a great first impression. Julie confirmed that the fishcakes were delicious and fresh; soft on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside. The smoky flavour of the fish was enhanced by a surprise addition of small black pudding pieces. The only drawback was the size of the fishcakes, a little on the small side but full of taste. The sight of steak pie on a menu is always enough to make me fall off the summer diet wagon and it was no different at the Colliers Arms! The pie was rustic looking and homemade, complete with Sue’s own short crust pastry! Now anyone who is willing to put their name to a dish must be pretty confident that it can deliver, and deliver it did, the generous chunks of beef were moist and tender and had obviously been cooked for hours, as it melted in the mouth. The beef was cooked with onion in a rich and thick meaty gravy, encased in a mouthwatering butter short crust pastry.
readers we soldiered on and ordered dessert. I went for the homemade Bakewell Tart with ice cream. Now not to be picky but it wasn’t really a tart, but a gorgeous big slab of cake that was warm and had a generous helping of jam running through the centre. This dessert was too big for me to finish and the only criticism was that for my palate the Bakewell could have used a bit more or that lovely almond flavour. Julie went for the hot chocolate fudge cake, her belief is that you can tell the calibre of a place from the way they serve their chocolate fudge cake, a great dessert but so easy to neglect. She was pleased to find that the cake was rich and moist and not dry like so many offerings can be. The chocolate was velvety which was complimented by the slight crunch to the chocolate frosting on top – all round a great end to the meal.
Julie plumped for the rather exotically named Tallahassee Chicken – what arrived was really chicken in a white wine sauce with a few added extras but Julie confirmed these added extras is what really made the dish. The succulent chicken had been cooked with onions, mushrooms, bacon and garlic and finished in a white wine and cream sauce. The sauce was smooth and creamy and obviously freshly made – no dinging of a microwave timer here!
The moral of this particular dining experience is to never judge a book by its cover; there’s never been a better time to enjoy some alfresco dining that doesn’t cost the earth. Make the most of the late summer sunshine and tuck into some tasty grub at the Colliers Arms.

Recipe of the month
Pan Seared Scallops Served with pistachio and Parma ham crumb, and curried parsnip puree Ingredients • 3 large scallops
• 1/2 kilo of parsnips
• 2 Parma Ham slices
• Curry powder
• Pistachio nuts
• Small knob of butter
• Seasoning
66
Method 1. Boil the parsnips in curried stock water. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10-15 mins or until the parsnips are tender 2. Puree the parsnip in a blender, add the butter and season to taste. Rub the mixture through a fine sieve into a clean saucepan, ready to reheat 3. To make the crumb, shell a handful of pistachios and chop finely. Place the Parma ham under the grill until crisp and chop into a crumb and mix this with the pistachios 4. Heat some oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Season the scallops and pan sear them for 1 minute on each side and then leave to rest 5. Reheat the parsnip puree and plate it immediately, place the scallops on top, season to taste then sprinkle the Parma ham crumb and pistachio crumb over the top for a show stopping starter!

Jack’s Tracks
Euxton & Yarrow Valley This 5.2 mile walk starts out from the beautiful Yarrow Valley Park off Southport Road near Euxton and takes in Euxton Parish Church, quiet lanes, open fields and riverside walks. Yarrow Valley Park to M6 Leave the car park and head to the main road, going left along Southport Road for about 20 yards to the bend in the road. Cross over the main road and head up Washington Lane for about 200 yards until you reach Pear Tree Lane on your left. You head down the lane for about 600 yards, going round the right hand bend and up to the next right hand bend, where you take the Public Footpath on the left. Climb over the stile and keep to the right of the field, going through into the next field until reaching an opening in the trees that leads down to a small footbridge. Continue across the bridge, and the path soon emerges onto the Cherries. Go straight along this, passing the children’s play area on your left. As you reach the continuation of the path, you go up, over the railway bridge and into the grounds
68
of Euxton Parish Church. Keeping to your left, follow the path round to where it leaves the church grounds and follow it down to the A49. On reaching the main road, you go right towards the traffic lights. Here you cross over the A49 and take a left into Bank Lane (signposted St Mary’s R.C. School). As you walk down the lane you’ll see the path in front of you, heading into the woods. Take this path, until it forks, then take the left fork which follows the course of Chapel Brook. Keep to this path as it winds its way along the side of the brook. You’ll eventually come to a stile, that you go over. This leads you into a field, where you go up the hill and on towards the footbridge crossing the M6 motorway.
Euxton Parish Church Originating from around the 14 century, the current church was built as a chapel by the Molyneux family. After the Reformation the chapel fell into disrepair until being adopted and repaired by the Church of England. Over the years, even as recently as 2010, with the restoration of the roof, a great deal of care has been taken to preserve the appearance of the church and its grounds.

Please be respectful when walking through the grounds of the church, especially if there’s a funeral or wedding in progress, and do keep your dog on a lead. For more information about the church, visit: www.euxton-parish-church.co.uk/church-history

M6 to Pincock You go over the bridge and follow the path down , straight on until you reach the fence at the far end. Here the public right of way ahead of you has been closed for quarrying, so you turn left over the foot bridge,
crossing the brook and up to the next stile. Follow the path over the top of the field and down the side of the edge row until reaching another stile. This then takes you across field full of crops (in summer), emerging onto Dawber’s Lane (A581). Cross the main road and go down Mill Lane. You follow the lane past the farms, all the way down and round to the left. The lane continues on, going under the motorway to a couple of houses, at which point the lane then becomes a narrow path, running along the side of the River Yarrow. Keep going along the path, passing the weir and on into Pincock Street. Pincock to Yarrow Valley Park At the end of the street you turn right, going over the river and up to the A49. Here you turn right and walk up the main road until opposite German Lane. At this point you cross the A49 and head up German Lane. Continue along the lane, going under the West Coast railway line, and round to the right. After about 600 yards German Lane turns off to the left. This leads down to Valley farm,
70
but before you get to the farm you go right down a rough track that takes you to a footbridge crossing the River Yarrow. Follow the path up to the road, where you go left until you reaching the Public Footpath sign on the left. You follow this down a lane to a set of gates, where the path turns off to the right. Take the path as it crosses another brook and climbs out of the trees into a field. The field has an obvious path of cut grass for you to follow. Take this path until you reach the stile, go over the stile and continue to the opposite side of the field, where there’s another stile. Follow the path to yet another stile, at which point you’re on the lane leading back to the car park from where you started out. Jack and I really enjoyed this walk and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Test Drive - by Andy Enright
Maserati for the masses?
A Maserati instead of a BMW 5 Series? That's the dilemma buyers are faced with after the introduction of the latest Ghibli. The Ghibli is Maserati's attempt to move from a low volume boutique manufacturer to one that shifts far bigger numbers. The Italian manufacturer wants to sell 50,000 cars per year by 2015. At the time of this Ghibli's launch, it was selling around 6,000 units per annum and Maserati believes that this car that will make up the vast bulk of those incremental sales. That's one heck of a responsibility to shoulder. Is this sleekly styled saloon really up to it? The big news first. You can now buy a Maserati diesel. Yes, I know that sounds about as likely as a Ferrari pick-up truck but get over the initial shock and you'll realise that if trying to compete in the executive market in Europe, a brand would be utterly scotched without a good diesel. The 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel is good for 270PS and sounds agreeably angry and has
76
no shortage of torque. The eight-speed ZF 'box is a proven and excellent unit, with rapid fire changes and a small element of dramatic shunt engineered in when shifting gear. Press the sound modifier button and the noise deteriorates from purposeful to something more akin to a diesel Sherpa. Ride quality and body control aren't quite on a par with Lexus or Jaguar, the Ghibli responding to a firm hand at the tiller - as you might expect from this marque. If you don't fancy the rear-wheel drive diesel model, then you have the choice of the 330bhp Ghibli or the 410PS Ghibli S. Both get Ferrari-built V6 turbo 3.0-litre petrol engines, the Ghibli S reaching 62mph in 5 seconds flat, with a quoted top speed of 177 mph. The 330PS Ghibli cranks out 500Nm of torque, and hits 62mph from standstill in just 5.6 seconds. Like the turbodiesel, both are fitted with a ZF eight-speed auto 'box. Drop inside and the interior feels and looks reassuringly expensive and well screwed together. Rear legroom and
headroom isn't at all bad and there's even a big 500-litre boot. In case you were wondering, yes, you do get that iconic Maserati dash-mounted analogue clock. If you prefer to make a dramatic entrance, however, there's really nothing to touch it. The Ghibli has been positioned as a rival to the established executive car elite but does it really square up competitively against them or is there a premium to pay for that badge? Prices open at around the £50,000 mark for the 271bhp 3.0 V6 diesel version, allow a budget of just under £55,000 for the 330PS petrolengined Ghibli and another £10,000 will get you the 410PS Ghibli S. Standard equipment on all models includes 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, plus lovely quad exhaust tips. The interior meanwhile, features electrically powered and heated leather seats, wood trim and a punchy eightspeaker stereo system. There's also a mechanical limited slip differential and climate control with no fewer than 13 vents.
values will be an important factor, but such is the economy and cachet of the diesel model in particular that it looks as if it might well perform very well indeed. Maserati has bet the family jewels on the Ghibli and can't afford for it to fail. It's a move which stakes the heritage and exclusivity of the trident badge and it puts their product right into the face of some of the most talented cars on the market. Can it square up? The Ghibli's not perfect of course. Its ride quality needs work and the infotainment systems feel a generation or two behind its key rivals. That said, it's a car that's impossible to dislike and has a charisma and appeal all of its own. Will it take Maserati where the company wants to go? We'll have to wait and see for that but if you were presented with the choice between a BMW 5 Series and a Maserati Ghibli, would you really be able to resist the lure of the Italian car? I know I couldn't.
Nobody buys a Maserati and expects it to offer tiny running costs but the diesel version of the Ghibli makes some very respectable numbers with a combined cycle fuel economy figure of 47.9mpg. Emissions are rated at 158g/km, which isn't at all bad for a big car that will accelerate to 62mph in just 6.3 seconds. Naturally, the petrol-powered models are a good deal thirstier, the 330PS Ghibli consuming fuel at a combined cycle rate of 29.4mpg and emitting 223g/km of carbon dioxide. The flagship Ghibli S meanwhile, gets 26.9 miles from a gallon of 98RON and emits 246g/km. Residual

Garden Diary - by Angie Barker
Go potty ...for pots! People often underestimate the impact that pots can have on your outside space. Whether your garden is big or small, or even a balcony, then pots can really enhance the look of it by introducing colour and style, in terms of the pots you choose and the planting. There are a few things to remember though with container gardening. First of all think big. Two or three large pots look so much better than a large collection of small ones – and they will need less watering. Then chose your style. If your garden is more of a cottage garden with lots of perennial planting in an informal style, then terracotta is the obvious choice. If however you have a contemporary, sleek garden perhaps with decking, then stainless steel or black ceramic would fit in perfectly. You also have to bear in mind that plants in containers rely on you for their water. Don’t be fooled Angie is a qualified award-winning garden designer who will plan your garden to your needs from start to finish, supplying reputable contractors and the ideal plants.

into thinking that the rain will keep them watered. In summer especially you will need a watering regime to stop the plants drying out. Whilst containers are great for summer bedding, they are also a great way of trying out new planting combinations without going to the expense of planting a whole new border. This summer I teamed Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’ (English Lavender to you and me) with Heuchera ‘Plum Pudding’ and a gorgeous deep crimson Cosmos and I love it! In fact Heucheras are brilliant for teaming up with all sorts of plants and although I really like the dark purple ones (Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ is sublime) they do come in a vast range of colours from oranges to lime green to almost black. For a bit of fun (see photo) I’ve planted a tall ceramic pot with Imperata cylindrica ‘Rubra’ (blood grass in english) – not everyone’s cup of tea I know but I do like the colour combination. I’ve also grown lots of veg in pots this year from potatoes, courgettes, peas, carrots and lettuce. Hubby is always telling me I’m potty – perhaps he’s right after all! Love Your Pets - by Dr Shams Mir BVSc&AH,MVSc,DrMedVet,MRCVS
Stay Ahead of Snails and Slugs Slugs and snails can transmit potentially deadly lungworm infection to dogs. With our weather becoming warmer and wetter, we are likely to see more of them around. If we appreciate the nature and implications of the link between dogs and these slimy creatures, we can act to protect our pet dogs. The adult lungworm Angiostrongylys vasorum measures up to an inch long. They live inside the major vessels carrying blood from the heart to the lungs and sometimes in the associated chambers of the heart. They breed in these vessels and lay eggs which reach the finer blood vessels where they hatch into first stage larvae. The larvae penetrate the vessel walls and enter the tissues of the lung from where they are coughed up, swallowed and eventually expelled with faeces. Foxes are known to contribute to the spread of this infection. The larvae in the dog faeces find their way into some slugs and snails, which if consumed by dogs transmit the infection. Dogs may eat slugs and snails voluntarily or accidentally when rummaging through undergrowth, eating grass, by drinking from puddles or outdoor water bowls or picking them up from toys. It is also suggested that live larvae can be present in the slime track left by the snail and thus dogs eating such slime covered grass can be infected. The larvae eaten with slugs and snails

mature in the bowel and ultimately reach the blood vessels of lungs to complete the life cycle. Symptoms may vary depending on the level of infection. Some dogs may show no symptoms if the infection is very light. Others may display vague symptoms like weight loss or intermittent lethargy and vomiting. In others it may develop into prominent cardio-respiratory symptoms like cough, exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing, nose bleed and coughing up of blood. Some dogs develop neurological signs like spinal pain, paralysis and fits. Confirmatory diagnosis depends on demonstration of larval worms in faeces, which is a tedious test. At Sunrise we use an in-house modern and very specific laboratory test to facilitate diagnosis of this disease. The lungworm infection can be prevented and treated by using appropriate worming medication. However, such medicines are not available over the counter. There is no point in giving worming treatment to a dog just for the sake of it. It is important to ensure that the worming treatment given is really effective and broad spectrum to address all potential worm related threats. Let us be at least a step ahead of slugs and snails. If I can be of any help in this regard, please do not hesitate to get in touch on 01257 463 142.

Money Saving - by Martin Lewis If you live in rented accommodation, you don’t need your landlord’s permission to save money. There are many things you can do to slash bills around the house. With the numbers of tenants rising, rents are fiercely expensive in many areas, so never has it been more crucial. Here are my top tips for renters: Renters have a right to switch and save on energy If you pay the gas and electricity bill directly (not via the landlord), and it isn’t specifically banned in your tenancy agreement, you can and should compare and switch. Don’t stick with the previous tenants’ supplier, as it can be costly. Always do a meter reading as soon as you move in. To find your cheapest deal, use an Ofgem Confidence Code comparison site, where you simply plug your details in and it gives you the answer. Even if you’re on a prepaid meter, you can still switch supplier and save. Yet if you want to convert from a prepaid to a normal meter, it’s best to get your landlords permission in writing, as it physically changes the property. Cheap contents insurance If you rent, your landlord is responsible for buildings insurance, so you only need contents cover. As for what each covers, a quick way to picture this is to think of all the stuff that’d fall if you turned your home upside down. If only you and/or your family live in the home then getting the cheapest cover is quite simple. Simply combine Confused.com and Comparethemarket.com to bag the maximum number of quotes in the minimum time. Then check avica.co.uk and Directline.com, which they miss.
Furnish for FREE! If you’ve gone unfurnished or part-furnished, then online giveaway sites can help you for nothing. Hundreds of top-quality goodies are available daily for free from web communities like uk.freecycle.org and ilovefreegle.org. Some is tat, but some is treasure. Check letting fees Renters can be hit by huge and unfair fees. Some reported to me include £120 for permission to buy a dog or £60 for photocopying a contract. Sadly, there’s little regulation over these charges, but at least make sure you know what they are so you avoid them. Do I need my own TV licence? In shared homes, this usually depends on the tenancy agreement. Joint tenants can usually share, but if you have your own tenancy, you need your own licence. For exact rules (including lodgers), see www. moneysavingexpert.com/tvlicence. FREE boilers Four big energy providers—EDF, Eon, Npower and Scottish & Southern—are giving away boilers (typically worth £2,300) for nothing, plus loft and cavity wall insulation. You don’t have to be a customer to qualify. You need to have an inefficient/broker boiler and be on a low income/get income-related benefits or pension credit. To check, call the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234 (England and Wales). Check your driving licence If you’re stopped with incorrect information on your driving licence, it can result in a £1,00 fine. Over 2.6 million have the incorrect address. Few know your photo licence must be renewed and updated every 10 years (the 4B date on your licence). Renewing costs £20, but is cheaper than a fine.
