DIY & Home Improvements
I
n keeping with the new look ‘Eye’ we are keen to develop certain themes for the benefit of our readers and one of the most important of those is ways to improve your home. We will therefore be giving you some great ideas in future editions. The first – and most important part of home improvements, though, is actually having a home in the first place so we’ve decided to begin by giving you top tips on moving into your home in the first place. Despite the current problems in the housing market caused by the economic downturn many are still lucky enough to be able to move into the house of their dreams. It’s often said, however, that while moving home is usually an exciting undertaking it can also be one of the most stressful things you can do. And regardless of the reasons for doing it the move can be traumatic. Here are some great tips to make the move go smoothly. Packing Use moving house as an opportunity to sort out your possessions. Throw away your rubbish and separate items that can be given to friends or charity shops. Get boxes well in advance from local shops or supermarkets, and save newspapers for wrapping breakables.
DIY removals If you're moving your belongings yourself, start by hiring the right van - too small and you may need to make a few journeys, too big and you may have problems parking. It's often cheaper to book vans on weekdays. But if you move at the weekends you may be able to make the most of special two-day hire rates. Professional removal companies Unless you have very few possessions, call in the professionals to help you move house. It will relieve some of the stress of the big move. You can arrange for it all to be done for you, and pay for the privilege, or you can do the packing yourself but leave the heavy stuff to the experts.
PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 34
LOCAL ANSWER Checklist • hire a removal company at least two weeks before you move • use a removal company who is a member of the British Association of Removers • get at least three quotes before deciding which one to use • check if the company offers a discount on a weekday • check the fine print in your moving insurance • make a list of your possessions so you can check if you've left anything behind.
It will help if you let the removal company know the following things: • the amount of furniture you're moving, so it can choose an adequately sized truck and plan the number of journeys needed • a rough guess of how many boxes the company needs to pack • the time you want the team to arrive • clear instructions and directions to your new property • arrange a parking space for the removal van • always tell the removal firm well in advance of pieces of furniture which won't go through the door • make a plan of where the furniture needs to go in your new home

questrian rider Nicola Wilson, who took silver in the team eventing competition at the summer games, presented the winners of the annual Great North Air Ambulance Serivce raffle the keys to a brand new Ford Fiesta. Nicola Wilson presented the Ford Fiesta to Alan Wade, of Ingleby Arncliffe, near Northallerton, in a celebration ceremony at Sedgefield Racecourse. Mr Wade, 72, was drawn out as winner of the Great North Air Ambulance Service’s annual car raffle last week. The retired highways worker and his wife Venetia bought twenty tickets at £1 each. The couple, who have one son, are already members of the charity’s weekly lottery and have won prizes of £100 and £25 in the past. Winning a car, however, came as a total shock, said Mr Wade. “I just couldn’t believe it. In some ways, I still can’t,” he added. “We are just waiting for it to sink in.” Wilson, who is from Morton-on-Swale, near Northallerton, said: “It was lovely to be asked to present the prize. I am a supporter of the Great North Air Ambulance and I know how important the service is to rural communities, PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 34
and horse riders in particular, so I was only too happy to help. Congratulations to Mr Wade.” The main prize of a Ford Fiesta was donated by Roflow Environmental Engineering. The Tyneside firm’s Managing Director Tom Robson has been a long term supporter of GNAAS since his late-mother had to use the service. He said: “I’m always looking for ways to help the charity and this just seemed like a great way of raising money for this fantastic cause.” This year, 126,700 tickets were sold for the raffle. An additional £17,332 was donated along with the tickets, making a total of £144,032, nearly £18,000 more than the previous draw. Ruth Davey, of GNAAS, who organised the raffle, said: “We just want to thank everyone for supporting the raffle. The money will be spent on flying missions throughout our region, and will make a real difference in the life-saving work of our crews.” Photo: Tommy Gray from Roflow, Alan Wade, Nicola Wilson, Venetia Wade and Tom Robson, also Roflow

etting stuck in a fitness rut can be surprisingly easy. Getting out of one and finding an inspiring activity to get you moving again can be a lot tougher. The new year is the perfect time to get yourself moving again and improve your health and fitness. Here are some fun ways to spice things up this fall.
Go for a walk
Walking is a great form of exercise and is easy to do, low impact and no special equipment is required. Make time everyday to go for a walk. Plan a route (maybe down the beach or round the shops) and enjoy the walk. If you do this everyday you will soon find your self finishing the route in a quicker time. Try changing up the route and increasing the distance. It’s great for the whole family.
to work out together while having fun and getting some fresh air.
On your bike
Many of us have a bike in the shed that’s lacking some attention. Why not get a group of friends together a go for a ride each week. It great fun for all the family and there any many local trails to explore.
Fitness trail workouts
Much more fun than a walk or a jog, fitness trail workouts combine a planned route with walking, jogging and several stations to perform lunges, squats, push-ups or use the outdoor equipment in your local park . This growing trend allows families and groups PAGE 10 | Local Answer - Issue 34
Dancing
Has “Strickly” got you in the mood? Get yourself to a dance class or try a Zumba class! Zumba is a fun and fast way to get fit - a dance class spirited with Latin and international beats, a mix of rhythms, resistance training and aerobic conditioning.
HEALTH & FITNESS
Outdoor boot camps
These are similar to a fitness tail workout but with a more intense and sometime military style program. Many of these classes use what Mother Nature provided to sculpt and slim the body. A typical outdoor boot camp experience might involve running hills or trails, climbing trees, swinging on the monkey bars and other high-intensity exercises using your body weight and obstacles such as fallen trees.
Weight training
Cardio training is important, but don’t forget about strength training. “Pumping iron” can completely change your body in just a few short months. Some of the most popular variety is kettlebell classes.
Yoga
Yoga has all sorts of benefits that are supported by research — mental and physical stress relief, mood improvement, slowing the aging process, along with peace and relaxation. Classes are available locally and a basic yoga is even available in your own home using a well know games system.
Keep It Fun
The best way to keep your fitness up is to do something you find fun to do and enjoy. Getting a group of friend together is a great way to make things fun and a bit of friendly competition is always good motivation.

Humour There’s Nothing Fair About The ‘Fairer’ Sex
A
s we enter the New Year with most men still considering themselves to be the ‘Master of the House, a few stories have come our way that most certainly refute that argument. Women are definitely beginning to hold their own in the sex wars and these stories are great examples of how they’re managing it. Look out fellas, they’re starting to take over!
WIFE VS. HUSBAND A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word because an earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a farmyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, 'Relatives of yours?' 'Yep,' the wife replied, 'in-laws.'
WOMEN'S REVENGE 'Cash or Cheque?' I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase. As she fumbled for her purse, I noticed she was carrying a remote control for a television set in her handbag. 'So, do you always carry your TV remote?' I asked. 'No,' she replied, 'but my husband refused to come shopping with me, and I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him legally to get my own back.'
WORDS A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day - 30,000 to a man's 15,000. The wife replied, 'The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men... The husband then turned to his wife and asked, 'What?'
UNDERSTANDING WOMEN - (A MAN'S PERSPECTIVE) I know I'm not going to understand women. I'll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax, pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root, and still be afraid of a spider. PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 34
CREATION A man said to his wife one day, 'I don't know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time. 'The wife responded, 'Allow me to explain. God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!
LOCAL ANSWER WHO DOES WHAT A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning. The wife said, 'You should do it because you get up first, and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee. The husband said, 'You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.' Wife replies, 'No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.' Husband replies, 'I can't believe that, show me.' So she fetched the Bible, and opened the Old Testament and showed him at the top of a page that it does indeed say 'HEBREWS'

THE SILENT TREATMENT A man and his wife were having some problems at home and were giving each other the silent treatment. Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him at 5:00 am for an early morning business flight. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper, 'Please wake me at 5:00 am .' He left it where he knew she would find it. The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 am and he had missed his flight. Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't wakened him, when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed. The paper said, 'It is 5:00 am . Wake up.' Men are not equipped for these kinds of contests. And finally …. God may have created man before woman, but there is always a rough draft before the masterpiece!

fter heavy snowfall, gently brush snow off conifers and hedges to stop the weight forcing them apart. If you have a chance, pack the branches of tender trees and shrubs with straw and secure with fleece to protect them from the cold; thick dry mulches will also protect roots from freezing conditions. When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths of moss and leaves.
are working properly. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough to brave the elements, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels! When soil conditions allow, continue to dig over beds and borders, incorporating as much organic matter as you can. Forking over not only helps prepare the soil for next year, it helps reduce pests by exposing them to hungry birds. Weeds - sadly many will survive the cold weather so once the soil is workable, hoe away before they leap into action in the spring.
If you haven't already done this, lay old carpeting or something similar over cold frames to protect them and check the insulation in greenhouses and that heaters PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 34
Take care not to let leaves accumulate around alpines - they will die if left damp for long. Cover bare patches around clumps with gritty compost to encourage regrowth.
TREES, SHRUBS AND CLIMBERS
GARDENING Remove dead, diseased or damaged wood in deciduous trees and shrubs. Avoid pruning birches, acers and vines, which are liable to bleed profusely if pruned after midwinter. Prune Wisteria this or next month (cut all stems coming off the main framework to 2 or 3 buds of the previous years’ growth). Leave evergreens and tender plants until spring or summer. Check all recently planted trees and shrubs - if they have been lifted by frost, firm them down.

LAWNS
Keep off the lawn as much as possible when there is a frost or if it is wet - damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted.
Houseplants
To keep your Christmas houseplants looking in top condition, follow these simple guidelines... Poinsettias, phalaenopsis and Christmas cacti - like to be warm, although not blasted with heat on top of radiators and the like! Poinsettias will reward exposure to cold or draughts with almost certain death, so treat them with kid gloves. Beware overwatering any of them. Feed poinsettias weekly, the others fortnightly. Cyclamen, azaleas and cymbidium orchids - prefer cooler conditions and like to be moist, though not overwatered. Dunk them in a bowl of water until the pot feels heavy and allow to drain before replacing on a saucer of gravel. Pinch faded cyclamen flowers at the base of the stem and remove spent azalea flowers very carefully - the new buds are often just below the old ones.

Alfa Romeo MiTo
A
s a young man (some years ago, admittedly), the Alfa Romeo was one of the cars I and my friends yearned for. Alfa had a superb reputation for making stylish cars that were great to drive and even better to be seen in and that has continued to this day. The Italian firm celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010, and Alfa's current range now comprises the MiTo Super-mini, the VW Golf-rivalling Giulietta, the Ford Mondeosized 159 and the Brera, Spyder and GT sports cars. I was keen to check out the newest version of their rival to the Mini and while it is a typically superb Alfa model I found it a bit of a contradiction. The MiTo was first

introduced in 2008, but changes to the 2012 version include an attractive chrome grill and chrome door handles that both add a touch of class. But even though three-door hatches always feel sportier, some would feel that an immediate disadvantage of the MiTo is that it is only available in that format. So if you’re a small family looking for five doors you’ll have to look elsewhere! On the other hand, there’s a decent interior and equipment levels include air-con and cruise control. Owners also receive a luxurious key fob with red leather strap. The real plus is that the MiTo is a stylish, upmarket small car that is cheaper than the MINI, has more rear space and a bigger boot. The range comprises six engines and five trims, and stretches from very economical diesel models to the high-performance Cloverleaf version. The line-up of petrol engines kicks off with a 77bhp 1.4, but you’re much better off going for one of the turbocharged Multiairs. The 133bhp version is particularly impressive, with a strong and smooth power delivery. The 0.9-litre Twinair pulls strongly from low revs, continues on page 20

MOTORING but doesn’t like to be revved. Diesel buyers have a choice of two engines: the 1.6 JTDm, is particularly lively but 1.3 perfectly adequate for most buyers. The petrol engines are generally smooth and quiet, especially the sophisticated Multiair models. Only the two-cylinder Twinair version lets the side down because you feel plenty of engine vibration through the pedals. The diesels are worse; the 1.6 is particularly intrusive at motorway speeds and clattery at start-up. All versions suffer from wind noise and road noise at higher speeds, and low-speed clunks from the suspension. The engine, however, is fitted with an automatic start/stop function that is designed to give better consumption. Whether it does or not, it certainly helps the

Volunteer, and change your future!
S
o why volunteer? All sorts of people volunteer for many different reasons, but one thing that unites them, is they find it challenging, rewarding and fun. The Scout Association, as one of the UK’s largest youth organisations is well known for what we offer young people. But our volunteers get a lot out of the experience too. Learning new skills, making new friends, and seeing young people grow and develop, which is very rewarding. Scouting is growing and making a big impression, much of this is being achieved by us having the right people in the right places. However we are looking for volunteer managers to manage and support several of our local groups. We call this role Group Scout Leader. This is a special role, its about ensuring young people are getting the best from Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, and making sure the adults leading them are supported and managed. PAGE 20 | Local Answer - Issue 34
Volunteering with the Scouts has some great benefits as well, and some which are really tangible, such as, adults who complete their training are eligible for membership of the Institute of Leadership and Management (looks great on the CV!). Plus over 40% of employers say that Scouting makes people more employable. Want to find out more about volunteering in a manager role with the Scouts contact stuart. nimmo@scouts.org.uk or call 01484 519305. ark Woodward Joinery & Decorating has rapidly developed a trusted status within the local community over the two years in operation. Mark Woodward Joinery & Decorating has gained a strong portfolio of both domestic and commercial clients. To help with his ever expanding client base, Mark has recently worked alongside the JobCentre Plus to create an opportunity for Glen (20) to join the company as a full time apprentice. ''Choosing a career is not always easy for some young adults, I wanted to offer my experience and skills to create an opportunity that will benefit others'' says Mark “my career history has been some what varied”. Mark began painting and decorating in his late teens, painting friends and families homes. He always strived for a career which involved painting and creativity, after leaving Art & Design College he set out looking for work in the area. Struggling to find a job Mark decided he was going to travel. Whilst seeing parts of Europe he found work in the travel industry. His adventure lasted 4 years. On his return he started work as a bench joiner and PAGE 24 | Local Answer - Issue 34
went to college gaining an NVQ in Bench Joinery. After many years of working for the same firm he was offered a contract working on site, he took this opportunity and broaden, and perfected his skills in the construction industry. Mark has been building up a good reputation for his work and finally decided to set up Mark Woodward Joinery & Painting in September 2011. Mark credits a lot of his success to this publication ‘The Local Answer’ and the tremendous response he has received from his advertisements. Make the most of January’s delicious seasonal foods
A
fter the wonder of the festive season when ice and snow are considered an integral part of the Christmas atmosphere, January is usually seen as a gloomy month with little to look forward to. Yet it really doesn’t have to be like that because it brings with it seasonal food that is surprisingly fresh and rich. Root vegetables are in great supply, leafy greens are plentiful and so good for you, oranges and tangerines are everywhere and relatively cheap and goose is still readily available. Here is a idea to make the most of the season’s best. Broccoli and Pasta Soup (serves four) The family will love this healthy and delicious start to a meal. It’s not only very warming it’s also low in calories, full of flavour and very cheap to make. You’ll need: 3 tablespoons of olive oil; 2 chopped garlic cloves; 2 onions, finely diced, 2 sticks of celery, finely diced; 400g can of peeled plum tomatoes; 1 tablespoon of tomato puree; 2 tablespoons of red wine vinegar; 1 teaspoon of sugar; 1.3 litres of vegetable stock; 500g of broccoli cut into florets; 75g macaroni or other small pasta; a bunch of fresh whole basil leaves; grated parmesan cheese and extra virgin olive oil for serving. Method 1. Heat the oil in a large pan over a low heat. Add the garlic, onions, celery and carrot. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt, cover and sweat down for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Squash the tomatoes in a colander so that you have a pulp and no juices. Add to the pot with the tomato purée, vinegar, sugar, stock and broccoli. Bring to a simmer and cook gently, covered, for 30 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, cook the pasta according to packet instructions. Drain and stir into the soup along with the basil. Season to taste. Divide between bowls. Put the Parmesan and olive oil on the table so that people can help themselves. PAGE 26 | Local Answer - Issue 34

Sport Promotion is the aim to make it a very happy new year
T
he undeniable quality of the Championship so far this season has been demonstrated a number of times with ‘Boro’s resounding Capital Cup victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and the narrow defeat by an own goal against another Premiership side Swansea at their own Liberty Stadium just two of the best examples. Our Christmas schedule included games against two teams that graced last season’s Premiership (Wolves and Blackburn) and a third – Blackpool - who had a great season up there the year before, and these were fixtures that could have really upset Boro’s challenge. It speaks volumes that following the results of those four games we are still in with a great chance of at least the play-offs after such a rigorous schedule. The rest of this month features games against teams who could also be our main rivals for those vital promotion spots and the results against Watford (a), Leicester (a) and Leeds (h) will obviously have a huge bearing on our final position. If we continue to perform as well as we have against similarly high quality teams and confirm our position as promotion contenders by the end of the month then ‘Boro fans must once more congratulate Tony Mowbray on a superb job. The way he has managed to slash the club’s wage bill by half while increasing the depth and strength of the squad with very little financial outlay should be considered a marvellous achievement. But creating an PAGE 28 | Local Answer - Issue 34
exciting brand of football that has been great to watch for much of the season should also be applauded. With so much upheaval in the personnel it is perhaps inevitable that results like the home defeat against Bristol City would emerge but the good has far outweighed the bad, even including the defeat at Cardiff in which we were far superior in every department except luck! There’s still a long way to go, of course, but I somehow can’t see the slump that happened last year being repeated this time around. The undoubted depth of quality and experience throughout the squad will see to that. Improved attendances – albeit from very generous offers from the club have obviously contributed to the home performances and it would be wonderful to see the crowds continue to support the team through a difficult run up to the end of the season. Let’s hope it all comes good and that we’ll be talking about Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool next season instead of Bristol City, Barnsley and Peterborough. I have to admit to considerable confidence in that direction. In the meantime can we take this opportunity to wish all you ‘Boro fans the very best for 2013 and don’t forget to log onto our website for updated ‘Boro commentary after each game.
