You can keep your New Year Resolution by making a Will this February and Support the Butterwick Hospice DO YOU OWN A HOUSE? OWN A VEHICLE? HAVE MANY POSSESSIONS? HAVE LIFE INSURANCE? If you have answered Yes to any of the above questions the next question you should ask yourself is how soon and where can I draw up a Will. By drawing up a Will you will gain peace of mind by knowing that you have provided properly for all your loved ones future. During February, Butterwick Hospice is working in partnership with a local Solicitor to help you make a Will. The Solicitors are giving their time and expertise freely and all we ask is that you consider making a donation to the Hospice of ÂŁ75 for a single Will and ÂŁ95 for a pair of matching Wills. Contact: Mrs L Hoskyns, JACKSONS, Stockton Tel: 01642 356500

WHY DO I NEED TO WRITE A WILL?

Here are five good reasons! 1. To make sure that your money, property and possessions are passed on the way you want. 2. If you have young children, to choose who will look after them if neither parent is alive. 3. To say what is to happen if your whole family is killed in a car crash or accident. 4. To arrange for burial or cremation. 5. To leave a legacy to charity.

Seasonal Valentine’s Day On A Budget

V

alentine's Day is the most romantic day of the year so it’s natural that we all want to celebrate it in a way that feels unique to our loved ones. It’s a day that is celebrated with a great deal of enthusiasm by people of all ages - young, old, middleaged, teens and adults. It is the day when people look forward to doing something special and gifting something unique to show their love towards their dear ones. The way this special occasion is celebrated differs from individual to individual depending on his budget as well as his preferences, so how we men can manage to impress our partner on a tight budget is the real question! Making Valentine's Day remarkable can only be down to our own thoughtful ideas but the most important thing is that whatever we do - straight from the heart – should be appreciated. Here are a few scenarios that will hopefully make everyone – boys and girls alike - think about how to get the best out of this magical day. 1. The current economic problems obviously means that teenagers have very little money to spare on gifts yet something as simple as a rose should make her realise you care. If she doesn’t react to that kind of thought then she obviously doesn’t realise your financial predicament. Do you really want to spend your life with someone who wants to live above their means? 2. Invite her to your place and rustle PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 35

up a dish using available supplies. This will cost you very little yet should still prove to be effective if she realises you’ve made the effort. Buy some fresh flowers and decorate the table with them to make your partner feel amazing. She should love the idea! 3. Prepare the morning tea when your Valentine wakes up and present a bunch of flowers to start the day on a celebratory note. Giving such a surprise to your partner in the morning will pave the way for a delightful day. 4. Celebrate Valentine's Day by wrapping up and taking her out to a park where you can just talk for a while. Follow that up by buying her a few flowers and chocolates while you enjoy each other's company. 5. Take her out to a place of natural beauty that has no entry fees yet has a romantic charm to help you both spend a wonderful time together. 6. If you’re lucky enough to have a few spare pounds to really surprise her look for great spa deals and you are sure to find a suitable rejuvenating package for both yourself as well as your partner. Let your senses relax as you both enjoy a day of real pampering! The most important part of Valentine’s Day is that you are spending it with the person for whom you really care. From all of us at The Eye, have a really great day!

Living & Lifestyle Five ‘February Resolutions’ you'll actually want to keep

W

ell, it’s now February and all those good intentions that began on January 1st have probably been abandoned and you’re left feeling a little guilty that you’ve given up so easily. The problem, of course, is that you were probably too ambitious in the first place and set up resolutions like exercising every day, cutting out all sugar, and maintaining a zero clutter policy in your homes - things which in a truly busy modern life are almost impossible to sustain. To make you feel better, however, we’ve created five great resolutions that can begin now, will do you the world of good and aren’t impossible to keep up. In fact, they’re not only easy to follow, they are also good fun! Number One – Meditation. It might sound a bit oriental, but this simple practice can have a huge impact on your life. Researchers have found that regular

PAGE 6 | Local Answer - Issue 35

meditation can help ease stress and even chronic pain, by allowing you to better control what your mind focuses on and mentally "dial down the pain." Getting started is easy. Just find a quiet spot, sit with your back straight (so you can breathe easily), close your eyes and try to clear your mind and focus only on your breathing. Start with about 5 minutes a day, and you can increase the time as you go. It’s amazing what a few quiet moments just concentrating on your own thoughts can do. Number Two - Exercise three times a week. Let's face it, for most of us, a resolution for daily exercise just isn't going to happen. We're busy, and a trip to the gym is easier said than done. But if we try, all of us can squeeze in some sort of workout at least three times a week, and studies show this can help prevent against heart disease and a prevention of other ailments. Doing things differently is the key. You need a loaf of bread and the shop is four hundred yards down the road. Don’t take the car, walk! That’s half a mile you’ve walked more than you normally would and that will really improve a lot about your personal fitness. Things like this may seem very small on the surface but they will make a difference. Make a note in your diary of how you do each time you change your routine and see how things add up!

LOCAL ANSWER Number Three: Weekly Bubble Baths Think of your weekly bubble baths as an opportunity for luxury meditating. Everyone deserves a little "me time" to relax, de-stress, and just be alone. So, make the effort to give yourself this much-needed time and spend it in the bath. The warm water is relaxing and can soothe tired muscles, plus you can add ingredients like Epsom salt to help detox and decrease aches and pain. And it certainly doesn’t do any harm to take a nice cold glass of white wine with you! Number Four: Monthly Wine and Dark Chocolate Girls' Nights At first glance this may seem like a silly indulgence, but actually all three ingredients in this monthly ritual are good for you. Wine and dark chocolate have good-foryou antioxidants, and studies show that maintaining close relationships with friends can prolong your life. So make your girls' nights a priority … for your health of course.

Number Five: Pay It Forward The previous four resolutions are all a little self-centred (and rightfully so!), but this last one is all about helping others. Find a cause you love and donate your time, money, whatever you can. Bonus: Volunteering has been found to boost self-confidence and even ease the symptoms of depression. So there's a little something in this one for you, too.

Car review

2013 Skoda Octavia ROOMIER, HIGHER EQUIPMENT LEVELS AND GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY.

T

he Skoda Octavia has always been one of the roomiest cars in its class, but this new model - available from March 16th - is the biggest yet and is nearer in size to the Ford Mondeo than the smaller Focus. Skoda these days is obviously a VW and the latest model is therefore based on the platform that underpins the latest VW Golf. The Octavia, however, has a longer wheelbase and extended rear overhang to help distance it from the Golf. Prices have risen by around £2000 compared with the outgoing model, but equipment is much better so if you take into account the extra standard features it’s actually better value for money.

but the new Octavia is actually a fair bit lighter than the car it replaces. The 1.2 therefore manages well, pulling strongly from just 1400rpm. You rarely need to work it hard, but even when you do it stays smooth, and the standard six-speed manual gearbox has a tall top gear that helps keep the engine remarkably relaxed at motorway speeds. Fortunately, you rarely need to push the engine that hard, because there’s plenty of muscle lower down in the rev range. It’s also a remarkably efficient motor considering how strong it is, with CO2 emissions of just 106.

A choice of two turbo petrol engines (a 103bhp 1.2 and a 138bhp 1.4) and two diesels (a 103bhp 1.6 and a 148bhp 2.0) are available but an ultra-efficient 89g/km Greenline model will join the range later this year, along with a 217bhp vRS hot hatch. It looks like a big car so you might feel a 1.2-litre petrol engine would struggle to drive it efficiently, PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 35

On the plus side, the Octavia’s size and shape means there’s loads of space in the back; there’s

Business What does the new UK pension legislation mean? What does the new UK pension legislation mean for business and employees? With the average age of the population constantly increasing, governments over the past twenty years or so have tried to respond to what will eventually become a crisis by introducing a series of initiatives aimed at getting people into their own private pension schemes. Since these have been unbinding and also been accompanied by bad publicity surrounding fraudulent dealings there has generally been a poor response. Only 3 in 10 private companies currently have pension provision and since the over 60's are set to grow by 40% over the next 30 years the inevitable crisis has forced the government into the recently launched automatic enrolment pension legislation. The legislation is currently only applicable to a selection of the UK's biggest companies with the roll out being staggered over 5 years. By the end of this period, however, every UK company and every eligible UK citizen will have been subject to auto enrolment pension legislation. In short, automatic enrolment pension legislation will see everybody over the age of 22 and earning more than ÂŁ8,105 per year automatically enrolled in a pension scheme as long as they ordinarily work in the UK. And while employees do retain the right to opt out of the scheme they will be re-enrolled every PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 35

3 years. As long as they opt out within the given time frame their contributions will be refunded; if not they'll stay in their pension pot.

The scheme has the prime purpose of attempting to get the lower paid into pension schemes. Many who work in small shops or as nannies, carers etc. won't have been exposed to pension schemes before, and many that have may have been reluctant to join without any real push in that direction. Money is often more important or even vital in the here and now rather than for future planning. These people may still opt out, but those who have merely avoided the question or may have the spare capital will most likely surrender to the automatic enrolment pension legislation at some point. Companies should begin to seek advice if they have no pension provisions in place and will be notified as to when their staging period will be. There will be government approved NEST schemes on hand to fill much of the pension void.

DIY & Home Improvements

Let Your Home Express Your Taste And Personality!

E

very building has its own character, so whether you’ve just moved into a new home or have taken a step back from your current one and are considering change, you obviously want to stamp your own personality on it and make it reflect your own taste. Going for styles you don’t like just because they are supposed to be the latest ‘in’ thing is wrong because if you aren’t keen on the style to start with it will constantly irritate. Decorating with sensitivity and confidence enhances the natural features of any home. While the more modern minimalistic look is not to everyone’s taste, it at least gives a good basis to work from. In the context of design, minimalism refers to simple, unadorned designs that embody only the most basic and fundamental needs. The look is clean and uncluttered and can be very striking in its simplicity. If, however, you prefer a more homely and cosy atmosphere, it still represents a great starting point because you can add your own touches as you go along. To make the most of the work you do here are a few basic rules that will help to achieve exactly the look you desire: Because it is almost impossible to carry exact colours in your head, when buying curtains or soft furnishings take a cushion from the sofa with you to ensure you get the right shades PAGE 14 | Local Answer - Issue 35

and colours. Also if you’re trying to match wooden furniture with additional items, take a drawer front with you so you can get as close a match as possible. A great little electronic tool is now available to give you straight lines when wallpapering or hanging shelves. If you can’t find one then use string covered with chalk to mark straight lines on walls.

When planning a child's room get down to their level to see it from a child's perspective. This will prevent placing hooks etc. too high for them to reach. In the same way never get a tall person to hang pictures for you as this will probably result in them being fitted too high.

LOCAL ANSWER To make fittings such as radiators less obtrusive paint them in the same colour as the wall. Fabric paints can give old pieces of furniture a new look. Try using the same colour paint on walls, woodwork, skirting and ceilings for an "all over" look.

First Class Decor All You Need In One Place

Colours - in a dark room go for bright not light. The following colours can help enormously: Terracota (orange based) = warm : Pink based colours = vibrant and dramatic : Yellow for dull rooms which lack sunlight : Green = calming : Blue = cool and restful. Eggshell finish paint on woodwork doesn’t show imperfections as much as gloss paint does. Use car spray paint to revitalise light fittings. When painting corridors remember dark colours will have a shortening effect. Clever use of mirrors can give the illusion of more space. Remember though, choosing the right colours in the first place is the single most important decision you’ll make. There are literally thousands to choose from so choosing the right ones that will combine well and look stunning in your home can be a daunting task. So ask for help from the professionals and don’t rush into anything. Take your time, choose wisely and the end result will be give you enormous pleasure for years to come!

ith the new year well under way already the marketing madness has started trying to capitalise on peoples new years resolutions on losing weight and getting back into shape, Fitness DVDs, group classes, discount gym memberships, But which one to choose? Our resident expert will guide you through that decision. TRY H.I.I.T If you don't have time to go to the gym or fitness classes then give H.I.I.T a try. H.I.I.T is known as High Intensity Interval Training. It Basically allows you to work at a high pace to maximise your heart rate for a short period then rest for a period of time to allow the heart to recover and the pace of your BPM (beats per min) to drop to a slower pace again, Then work at a high pace again once more and best of all, it can be done in under 10 minutes at home with no special equipment.

WHY? Its excellent for FAT BURNING. Various group classes will have you working really hard for the full hour with no breaks, if the heart doesn’t recover then you will come out of your fat burning zone and work toward your anaerobic threshold which then uses your

lean muscle mass to convert to fuel your body and your fat stores are not broken down. This means your muscle mass you’ve worked hard to gain is gone just as quick.

When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

WILD BIRDS

Putt out fresh water and food for wild birds is really important, especially on cold days. Buy good quality bird food or fat/suet balls and check that water is not frozen.

LAWNS

Keep off the lawn as much as possible whilst it is still wet - damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted. If, towards the end of the month, the weather turns dry and mild, the lawn is firm and the grass is starting to look a little shaggy, give it a very gentle mow with the blades on the highest setting - don’t be tempted if conditions are wet! Also, if you are planning a new lawn, now is probably the earliest you could start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. Ask for advice in your local garden centre if you are unsure as to how to begin!

Pets & Animals

Exotic Pets – Satisfaction With Responsibility!

T

he desire for ‘things different’ is a modern phenomenon that covers many aspects of life but perhaps one of the most unusual has arisen amongst pet owners. For many the cuddly kitten or the faithful puppy have lost their appeal to be replaced by a fascination for what are termed ‘exotic’ animals. There are a large number of species that can be included in that description including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. The easy availability of many different options has led to more people keeping these animals in their homes. Snakes, spiders, lizards and chipmunks are all becoming more and more popular as pets, but before you buy an impressive looking lizard or a furry spider it’s important that you consider the following: •

• • •

Many species are actually illegal in the UK, either because of their conservation status or the danger they may pose. Check before you buy in case you need a permit. Find out as much as you can about the species. They may need more care or more space than you are able to provide. How long will it live? Some reptiles may outlive you, so are you prepared to spend the whole of your life looking after it? Can you handle your pet? Tarantulas may

PAGE 22 | Local Answer - Issue 35

• • •

bite if they feel threatened and other reptiles are slimy and uncomfortable to the touch. Is there a vet available who has experience with exotic pets? You may be making a big financial investment and you need to know it can be looked after. Exotic pets have specific dietary requirements. Will you be able to handle things like frozen mice or live locusts? Find out how big it can grow to. Some pythons can grow to over 6ft. The cost of accommodation, food and vet bills is likely to exceed the initial price of the pet, so think carefully about whether you are prepared for the expense. Will your pet need company? Some species become stressed if kept alone, whereas others will prefer to be solitary.

Once you’ve made all the necessary checks and you are still happy to go ahead then find a reputable supplier that can guarantee all the necessary health checks have taken place to bring the animal to this country. Having been the owner of both a tarantula and a snake in the past (not to mention mice, rats, gerbils and guinea pigs) I can assure you that there is a great deal of pleasure to be had from owning something reasonable exotic. The corn snake, for instance, was quite

LOCAL ANSWER affectionate, though on occasions could deliver a bit of a nip. The tarantula, however, was always very calm and he handled beautifully. You do, however, have to be ready to accept their tantrums! It’s nevertheless fascinating to watch them in their own little habitats and you can get a great deal of excitement watching the tarantula stalk something and a whole lot of peace and tranquillity watching tropical fish. The choice is wide but - more importantly – it’s all yours! Enjoy!

The world of cars according to Jeremy Clarkson.

W

e have no doubt there are many people out there who consider Jeremy Clarkson to be both outspoken and arrogant but there is also little doubt that there are even more who find him both funny and knowledgeable – at least about cars. Here are some classic quotes from the man himself that subscribe to both beliefs! “ I'm sorry, but having a DB9 on the drive and not driving it is a bit like having Keira Knightley in your bed and sleeping on the couch.”

in the air saying there will be no war with Germany.” Illustrating the lack of power of a Boxster: “It couldn't pull a greased stick out of a pig's bottom.” On the Vauxhall Vectra VXR: “there is a word to describe this car: it begins with 's' and ends with 't' and it isn't soot.” “The Suzuki Wagon R should be avoided like unprotected sex with an Ethiopian transvestite.” “The air conditioning in a Lambos used to be like an asthmatic sitting in the dashboard blowing at you through a straw.” “Koenigsegg are saying that the CCX is more comfortable. More comfortable than what... being stabbed?”

Run them down to prove them wrong.” “Britain's nuclear submarines have been deemed unsafe...probably because they don't have wheel-chair access.”

“Sure it's quiet, for a diesel. But that's like being well-behaved....for a murderer.”

“Now we get quite a lot of complaints that we don't feature enough affordable cars on the show.......so we'll kick off tonight with the cheapest Ferrari of them all!”

“I don't often agree with the RSPCA as I believe it is an animal's duty to be on my plate at supper time.”

On the Lotus Elise: “This car is more fun than the entire French air force crashing into a firework factory.”

“Much more of a hoot to drive than you might imagine. Think of it if you like, as a librarian with a G-string under her tweed pants. I do, and it helps.”

Sport What On Earth Goes Wrong In January?

A

third straight league defeat at Leicester confirmed what we all dread every year. For some inexplicable reason, ‘Boro simply don’t perform in January. OK we had our pockets picked against Watford after the New Year’s Day drubbing at Derby, but even though a last minute penalty was missed to deprive us of a point against Leicester they had already hit the woodwork four times and had a perfectly decent goal disallowed so even though we should actually have come away with a draw a 1-0 defeat was really quite flattering. The good news is that thanks to other results we are still in the play off positions and now have the Leeds game in hand thanks to our involvement in the FA Cup fourth round against Aldershot – a game that comes too late for deadline but one that should see us into the next stage, But whatever the result of that match we now have to start putting a league run together again and February sees a great chance to do that. The first three games are at Ipswich, currently in 19th position then home to Barnsley – 23rd. and Leeds. Nine points from those three games will put a totally different complexion on the league table before our visit to high flying Crystal Palace. The other two February games are away to Burnley and home to Millwall, so those six games will have a huge bearing on the possibly successful end product of PAGE 28 | Local Answer - Issue 35

a season that, until recently, promised big things. On the downside, at the time of writing there are ominous suggestions that George Friend is a target for a couple of Premier League clubs and even though Tony Mowbray is the first to accept that every player has his price we can ill afford to lose one of our most consistent players. That Barry Robson is returning from Canada to train with ‘Boro due to the inability of his family to settle could be an interesting development, however, especially as he has actually started 16 of the 17 games for which he was available, scoring three goals in the process. That means that fitness wouldn’t be a barrier against last year’s ‘Player of the Season’s availability in some form or other. I’m sure many would welcome the return of his ‘never say die’ spirit and the spectacular goals of which he is capable. We wait with baited breath!
