The New Leon - Something Different For Seat Enthusiasts
T
he recent launch of Seat's thirdgeneration Leon is perhaps its most important release to date because it heralds a simpler and cheaper portfolio for the company than had previously been available. Not so long ago, Volkswagen’s Spanish outpost made plenty of larger and more expensive cars but the Leon has become something of a flagship model with some superb additions offering extra distinctiveness and obvious new qualities. Compared with the previous Leon hatchback, the current one is not only more practical, more technologically sophisticated, lighter, more powerful and more efficient, it also offers a much trendier look. This is the first Seat to benefit from the Volkswagen Group’s ‘Modularer Querbaukasten’ (MQB) platform, technology that influences the new car’s kerb weight and its major dimensions. A more space-efficient PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 38
layout has allowed 58mm to be added to the wheelbase, despite 52mm being taken off its overall length. That both improves passenger space and gives better ride and handling, though this sort of practicality isn't nearly as appealing to the prospective buyer as the Leon's superb new styling and obvious value for money. It’s also the first Leon to be available in a range of body styles offering as it does a regular five-door hatch, a three-door ‘SC’ coupé or a longer five-door ‘ST’ estate. Five engines are offered, ranging upwards from a 104bhp, 1.2-litre TSI turbocharged petrol, via 120bhp and 178bhp four-cylinder turbo petrols, to a pair of four-cylinder diesels consisting of a 104bhp, sub-100g/ km 1.6-litre unit and a 148bhp 2.0. All drive the front wheels, via a choice of five or sixspeed manual, or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. The smaller diesel is expected to account for the majority of UK

Time of Love & Romance
It’s Official, Summer Has Arrived, Traditionally, Anyway!
W
hile it has always been widely regarded that Summer begins in June, the first day of May (May Day) is the time of year when warmer weather begins, flowers and trees start to blossom, and - for the last 2000 years - May Day celebrations have been held worldwide.
Since 1978, of course, the Government ensured that May Day would be officially celebrated on the first Monday of the month when it was made an official Bank Holiday for schools and business, though many of the
May is said to be a time of love and romance and an opportunity for people to celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs expressing joy and hope after a long winter. This year we can all be forgiven for celebrating (hopefully) the end of the longest period of cold weather we've experienced for years. Traditional May Day celebrations include Morris dancing and crowning a May Queen, and while to many these are becoming increasingly antiquated in today's fast moving society there are still many villages where the traditions are upheld and enjoyed on the first Monday of the month. The heralding of Summer was originated by the Romans whose celebration of the festival of Flora, goddess of fruit and flowers, marked the beginning of summer. It was held annually from April 28th to May 3rd. PAGE 6 | Local Answer - Issue 38
May Day celebrations still take place at the weekend as well. Let's hope that this May Day does indeed herald the beginning of more 'summery' conditions! We hope you all enjoy May and what the summer will bring.

I
n the heart of Redcar’s new Palace Hub on the seafront, is an exclusive showroom called “Northern Lights.” The name derives partly from the Aurora Borealis, which is near enough to be the cause of the slight green tinge we often seen in our skies, and partly from work by local photographer Ged Hickey. Local photographer Ged Hickey, who currently exhibits in “Northern Lights”, recently completed a series of photographs where millions of lights are reflected in water. Ged names this series of photographs Northern Lights. The late Victorian artist and craftsman William Morris believed that everything in one’s home should be either beautiful or useful, and if you subscribe to this view, you would benefit from a visit to Northern Lights. We would add to Morris’ list the word “fascinating” to describe some of the work available in their showroom. So, if you are bored with imported goods from other countries, and would like to embellish your home with original work made by local professional artists, while at the same time supporting the local economy, then a
visit to Northern Lights in Redcar’s new Palace Hub is a must. Within Northern Lights you will find a range of Photographs, paintings, jewellery, greeting cards, fabulous soywax candles made by Pam Roe and much much more. Prices compare extremely well to anything similar available elsewhere, and some prices are negotiable. You will receive a warm welcome, and be able to discuss at length any art or craft work you might want to commission. You will also be able to see work being produced in the showroom. The store is currently maned by volunteers, the artists themselves and Gail Wright the proprietor. Gail is currently doing research to find out what opening times suit customers best, but at the moment, the store is open for part of every day except Mondays and Wednesdays, when the artists are at home creating new works of art. However Gail will even open on closed days by special arrangement. For More Information See Their advert on page 7

'Stupid Is As Stupid Does.'
T
hat well known quote from my all time favourite film 'Forest Gump' sums up beautifully the following statements made by international personalities who really should know better. If nothing else, their comments should make you feel that you're much more intelligent than you thought. Enjoy! On September 17, 1994, Alabama’s Heather Whitestone was selected as Miss America 1995. In her competition interview she was asked : ‘If you could live forever, would you and why?’
“Smoking kills. If you’re killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life,” -- Brooke Shields, during an interview to become spokesperson for federal antismoking campaign:
She replied: “I would not live forever, because we should not live forever, because if we were supposed to live forever, then we would live forever, but we cannot live forever, which is why I would not live forever.”(Beautifully put!)
“It isn’t pollution that’s harming the environment. It’s the impurities in our air and water that are doing it..” --Al Gore, Vice President.
Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can’t help but cry. I mean, I’d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.” --Mariah Carey “I’ve never had major knee surgery on any other part of my body,” --Winston Bennett, University of Kentucky basketball forward. “Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country,” --Mayor Marion Barry, Washington DC “Half this game is ninety percent mental.” --Philadelphia Phillies manager, Danny Ozark. PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 38
“I love California. I practically grew up in Phoenix.” (Phoenix is actually in Arizona) -- Dan Quayle, prominent American politician. “We’ve got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need?” --Lee Iacocca - President and CEO of Chrysler from 1978 “The word “genius” isn’t applicable in football. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.” (We think he meant Albert!) --Joe Theisman, NFL football quarterback & sports analyst. “We don’t necessarily discriminate. We simply exclude certain types of people.” -- Colonel Gerald Wellman, ROTC Instructor.

DIY & Home Improvements
Are two panes not enough for you?
W
indows are now expected to prove a positive cog in keeping our homes nice and warm and there is no denying that triple glazing out performs its counter partners. Our euro-siblings have been donning the three pane look for years – something to do with it being mighty chilly in the likes of Sweden – and the UK is finally catching on to its great benefits. It’s estimated that triple glazing could reduce heat loss through the window by a whole third more than double glazing. Not only that, but the sound insulation is even better too. How does triple glazing work? We all know what double glazing looks likes (two layers or glass with an air gap in the middle), just add another pane and you’ve got triple glazing. It creates another air pocket, which is why it keeps your house even warmer. The air gap can even be filled with inert gas such as argon to help in your fight to save heat. What are the benefits of triple glazing? • Offer a more rigid and strength window • Great selection on extreme weather • Excellent resistance to condensation problems • Helps reduce sound transmission
• Better energy saver than regular and double glazed windows • Installing triple glazed windows is equivalent to upgrade walls and ceilings from R-20 to R-40( in certain circumstances) • Triple glazed windows can decrease relative heat loss • Increases thermal comfort inside the building • A combination of double glazed windows and triple glazed windows can be used with the building orientation to obtain excellent results • Insulated hollow frames can increase triple glazed windows performance The chief advantage of triple glazing is thermal insulation; it will essentially keep your house warmer therefore you’ll use less energy, which works out great for both you and the environment. A side benefit of its thickness is that it greatly improves sound reduction too, so if you live in a busy area and are looking to minimise noise pollution, triple glazing might be for you. Another great advantage is that it allows for much bigger windows, so if you are planning a house and you want a massive expanse of glass but you don’t want to compromise on heat, triple glazing is your best option.
If you want an extra warm, energy efficient home then the answer could be triple glazing. PAGE 14 | Local Answer - Issue 38

In The Garden
May Gardening Tips
W
ith the uncommonly long winter period of this year, you may have found your garden to be only just starting to come to life. On the plus side, this as also held back the growth of those unwanted weed. Now is the time to get in the garden and get onto of it before everything bursts into life.
GARDEN MAINTENANCE
Beware treacherous late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Continue with the spring cleaning and Mulching as mentioned in last months edition. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. The trick with watering is to water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers etc do need watering every day).
Birds
Keep putting out bird food - they quickly become accustomed to regular food supplies and it’s a real treat to see wild birds in the garden. PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 38
Birds are a healthy part of a garden and are key to helping control pest problems such as snails and slugs. Remember to have some flat stones artfully located throughout your garden for birds to practise their snail bashing techniques
Trees, shrubs and climbers
Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this MUST be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Hard pruned clematis should now be growing vigorously - tying the new stems in regularly will prevent a haphazard tangle of new shoots which can break easily. Cut wispy dead wood on Japanese maples back to healthy wood with sharp secateurs do not leave any pegs or snags, as these can attract the fatal fungal disease coral spot.
LOCAL ANSWER Twist off the spent flower heads and compost. Spray roses with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn. Remember that if an infection sets in, all the stricken leaves must be burnt - do not leave them on the compost heap as this will become the perfect incubation site. Beware greenfly - treat immediately if an infestation occurs ask in your local garden centre for advice as to what to use if you are unsure.

Thin annuals to prevent them becoming spindly and leggy - a gap of 6 inches between seedlings is usually about right. Tidy up spring flowering perennials such as pulmonaria - cut off the old foliage, lift and divide large clumps and replant with plenty of water and organic fertiliser - lift polyanthus and relocate to a nursery bed for planting out next spring. Deadhead narcissi and tulips as they go over and sprinkle with bonemeal or liquid foliar feed. If you can bear it, allow them to die down naturally before clearing away the foliage and lifting and splitting towards the end of the month. Cut back spreading and trailing plants such as alyssum and aubrieta to encourage fresh growth. If you haven’t already done so erect supports for herbaceous plants such as peonies, delphiniums and oriental poppies prone to undignified collapse. As the Horti Expert points out it’s a bit late now but better late than never - make your own supports using hazel or birch twigs for a natural look that will fade into the border as your plants grow. Sow hardy annuals such as nasturtium, calendula and poppies in drifts - clashing colours just don’t matter in a garden, but remember to plant taller plants behind shorter ones. Sow cornflowers and larkspurs when the soil is warmer. Tie in sweet peas using sweet pea rings or soft twine. Removing tendrils and sideshoots will result in longer stemmed flowers. beguiled by warm days - a late spring frost will wreak havoc with these plants unless protected and slowly hardened off. Make sure pots and containers don’t dry out, especially if they are near a wall and in a sheltered position. Plant up tubs, containers and hanging baskets for a blaze of colour throughout the summer - remember to harden tender plants off properly before exposing them to the elements.

ecause the best growing period for young, fresh asparagus is between April and June, May has been officially designated as National Asparagus Month and we thought we'd bring you this really wonderful way to enjoy its delicious shoots. It is now available all year-round, of course, but April and May are still the best months for fresh asparagus and a time when cost is not too prohibitive. Only young asparagus shoots are eaten because once the buds start to open the stems quickly grow woody, but since it is low in calories and sodium and a good source of vitamins A, B6, C, E & K, calcium, magnesium, zinc and chromium it's a very healthy food indeed. This is a great way to eat it. Asparagus Crostini with Pancetta and a Parmesan Crisp Ingredients: 1/3 cup, plus 1 teaspoon olive oil, divided ; 1 long baguette, about 2 feet long, cut into 48 1/2-inch thick slices ; 3/4 pound asparagus (about 12 stalks), ends trimmed ; 1/4 teaspoon salt ; 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ; 1-1/4 cups (5 ounces) shredded Parmesan cheese ; 1 cup of ricotta cheese ; 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh basil, divided ; 1/3 pound pancetta, cut into 1/4-inch cubes. Preparation: Crostini : Brush both sides of each slice of bread with oil and toast until lightly browned. Let cool. Ricotta Mixture : In a small bowl, mix together Ricotta, 1/2 cup Parmesan and 2 tablespoons of basil. Set aside Parmesan Crisp : Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place a heaped teaspoonful of Parmesan on it. Smooth into a rectangle about the length of each crostini. Repeat with remaining Parmesan, space about 1/2 inch apart and cook until golden PAGE 20 | Local Answer - Issue 38
brown. Allow to cool. Asparagus : Place asparagus stalks on a baking sheet and drizzle with remaining tablespoon of oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast at 375 degrees until the asparagus is just beginning to turn brown and crisp-tender - about five minutes. et sit until cool enough ton handle. Cut the asparagus crosswise into 1/4 inch slices. Set aside. Pancetta : In a medium sautĂŠ pan, place the pancetta over medium heat. Cook until pancetta is crisp and brown around the edges, about 6 minutes. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Let cool. Assembly : Spread about 1 teaspoon of Ricotta-Parmesan mixture onto each crostini. Lightly press 5 or 6 slices of asparagus and 3 or 4 pieces of pancetta into the cheese mixture. Bake 7 to 9 minutes, or until the cheese is heated through and the edges of the asparagus are a shade darker. Remove from the oven and let cool 5 minutes. Place a Parmesan crisp on top of each crostini, sprinkle with remaining basil and serve.

Sunday Night Viewing
Still Safe With BBC
W
hen the latest series of ‘Call the Midwife’ ended many of us were desperately disappointed because despite very visibly demonstrating the huge hardships that many Londoners experienced in the fifties and sixties the series definitely had a lovely feel-good aspect to its superbly crafted episodes. But BBC have very bravely rescued Sunday night viewing by replacing ‘Midwife’ with a story of country folk that is as far removed from the Archers as it is possible to be. ‘The Village’ is the story of a family on a run down farm in Derbyshire that is initially set to run for three series of six episodes each. The brainchild of barrister-turned-writer Peter Moffat - the Bafta-winning creator of legal dramas Criminal Justice and Silk – the series will follow just one village through the tumult of the 20th-century. Extending from 1912 to 1916 (with a final episode set in 1920), the first series of The Village stars John Simm and Maxine Peake as impoverished alcoholic Peak District farmer John Middleton and his wife Grace. Juliet Stevenson also appears as the Lady of the local manor. These names apart, the cast is largely unfamiliar but has introduced 13 year old newcomer Bill Jones (as young Bert Middleton whose long life will be central to the whole series) and Irish actress Charlie Murphy as headstrong suffragette Martha. The first six episodes cover roughly the same time span as the opening series of Downton Abbey, but there the similarities end. This is a true working-class history and will take us through the dreadful horrors of the First World War. Understandably it’s already had a few complaints of being too dreary, but it’s difficult to see how you could possibly portray the reality of life in that era without involving the somewhat desolate lifestyles people had to endure. Despite that, it’s wonderfully written, superbly acted and has filled the Sunday night void beautifully. If successful – and viewing figures will dictate whether it is or not - future series would be set in the 1920s, the 1930s, the Second World War, post-war austerity Britain and beyond. The hope is that enough people watch the opening six episodes to give BBC1 drama bosses the confidence to allow that to happen. Judging by reaction so far it probably will. Well done the Beeb! Improve Your Heart Health
5 Exercises To Improve Heart Health
Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise is any form of activity that increases your respiratory and heart rate, essentially challenging your heart to work harder and become stronger. Cardiovascular fitness will improve the way your body uses oxygen. As your heart becomes stronger, you will find that you aren't winded walking up the stairs, you can perform physical activity longer, and your resting heart rate will be lower, meaning your heart is more efficient at pumping blood through your body. Though any aerobic exercise is good for your heart, these five physical activities are top-notch for heart health. 1. Brisk walking The human body was born to walk. Whether you rack up the miles on a treadmill or hit the road, brisk walking is a natural way to improve your fitness. Wear supportive, comfortable walking shoes, strap on your iPod and get moving. Though a leisure stroll is better than sitting on your couch, push yourself to walk at a fast pace to achieve a moderate intensity level. 2. Running Though more challenging than walking, running is another heart-healthy physical activity that the human body is ready-made to do (barring physical limitations or injuries). In addition, it is one of the best ways to burn calories (a 150-pound person can burn 100 calories per mile), a bonus if you are also trying to lose weight to reduce your risk of heart disease. If you are a beginner to running, start out with a brisk walk and add 1 to 2 minutes of running every 5 minutes of walking. As you get more fit, you can increase the minutes you run until you don't need to walk in between. 3. Swimming The pool may be a great place to float lazily along, but that water can also be a full body fitness challenge. Swimming laps or even participating in water fitness classes will not only raise your heart rate and improve your heart health, the water provides multi-directional resistance that will PAGE 26 | Local Answer - Issue 38
LOCAL ANSWER improve your muscular strength and tone. Swimming is a safe alternative if you have joint problems that walking or running can aggravate. 4. Cycling Another cardiovascular activity that is easy on the joints, cycling is a low-impact exercise that you can do solo in the gym, in a spin class, or outside on the road or trails. Make efficient use of your cycling time and bike to work or to do your errands. Even better, join a cycling club and enjoy the camraderie. While your heart is pumping you'll also be building strength and toning your lower body as well as your core muscles, if you take your bike off-road. 5. Interval or circuit training If doing a solid stint of aerobic exercise bores you tears, mix up your cardio. For example, for every 3 minutes of cardio, do 1 strength training exercise or a high-intensity burst of cardio for 1 minute. Another option is to choose 5 to 10 strength training exercises and perform 1 set of each, doing lower weight and higher repetitions while moving quickly from one exercise to the next to keep your heart rate up. This type of training will not only keep you motivated to exercise, it will improve your muscular strength, endurance and heart health. Important! Before you start a new exercise plan, talk to your doctor to make sure the physical activities you want to do are appropriate for your age, health and fitness condition.
