The Apprentice? It’s time it was fired!
F
rom the first enthralling series of ‘The Apprentice’ we have watched with fascination as bunch after bunch of talentless ‘wannabees’ have tried to prove they were worthy of joining forces with self made cockney millionaire Lord Alan Sugar. He, for his part has played the hard man, frequently referring to the way he built his business from scratch and criticising every poor decision the candidates make. Does he, you may ask, have the right to be so hypercritical. Let’s look at the facts. Sugar was born in Hackney, East London into a Jewish family - the youngest of four children. His father was a tailor in the East End garment industry and the family lived in a council flat. He attended Brooke House Secondary School in Hackney and made extra money by working in a grocery shop. After leaving school at 16 he worked briefly for the civil service as a statistician at the Ministry of Education but left to sell car aerials and electrical goods out of a van he had bought with his savings of £50. He eventually founded Amstrad in 1968, the name being an acronym of his initials – Alan Michael Sugar Trading. The company began as a general importer/exporter and wholesaler, but soon specialised in consumer electronics and by 1970 was manufacturing audio amplifiers and tuners. Production was ultimately switched to computers and during the 1980s it doubled PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 39
its profit and market value every year. It eventually reached a stock market value of £1.2b. Sugar eventually sold his remaining interest in Amstrad and now has an estimated fortune of £770m. Perhaps the nicest and least known aspect of the man is that he married his wife in 1968 and in true Jewish tradition they have remained a close union and have two sons and a daughter. So whatever you may think of his ‘Apprentice’ persona Lord Alan Sugar is indeed a genuine ‘self made man’ who has every right to look at the sometimes pathetic behaviour of his would-be apprentices with disdain. And in view of the adverse publicity attracted by at least one of his previous winners and the unsavoury revelations surrounding one of the current batch, he must surely realise that now is the time to call it a day. In the beginning the show was innovative, interesting and highly entertaining but it has since grown tired and repetitive and is completely outclassed by its spin-off show ‘The Apprentice – you’re fired,’ hosted by Dara O Briain. Sadly, there is already another series commissioned, but falling audiences and repeated criticism can only mean it should be the last. Let’s hope so!

Car review
Hyundai i30 Hatchback.
H
yundai has long been acclaimed as one of the best combinations of economy and performance around and the latest i30 hatchback encapsulates that concept perfectly. Retail value starts at around £14,600 but you should be able to negotiate something closer to £13,500. An estimated 62.8mpg, low CO2 emissions of 119g/km putting it into band 3C for a road tax of only £35 a year combined with an insurance group of 5 make it an economic proposition.
importantly - exceptional economy and a five year, unlimited mileage warranty. Powered by a new range of 1.4 - 1.6 petrol and 1.6 diesel engines, the car is perfect for the family because sufficiently responsive acceleration makes overtaking both simple and safe. The diesel version is also refined enough to be able to eliminate the normal abrasive sounds associated with that type of engine.
This particular model has been most certainly designed for Europe where the hatchback market is fiercely competitive, but it does, without doubt, hold its own on a number of fronts. The features that will undoubtedly recommend the car are a highly flexible 6 speed manual gearbox, excellent suspension that supplies a smooth drive on the uneven surfaces and variations that modern road conditions provide and - even more PAGE 10 | Local Answer - Issue 39

o what do you wear this summer? It's easy to look at the early season fashion shows and think you would never be able to wear the stuff they parade, but it's amazing how quickly those original design ideas are transformed into high street affordability. But if you're not sure what the new trends are for the (hopefully) summer season ahead here are a few ideas. Bold graphic prints, oriental styling, monochromes and jumbo statement stripes are the new trends for this year and we begin our review of the styles you should look for
you wear them in bold black and white or mix things up with a few colours . Original catwalk styles shown here are from - among others - Dolce Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, Giles and Acne. Now get into the high street and find excellent examples of similar design at a fraction of the cost. One thing's for sure. If you find them and wear them you'll certainly turn heads!

is great condition. Intense sunshine, sand and salt water can take its toll on your hair and make it dry and brittle. Using a deep-conditioning will help to keep your hair looking healthy and glossy.
If you plan to spend a full day in the sun you can try applying an intensive hair mask before setting off to the beach. Comb into a high, sleek ponytail, or twist hair into a classic, chic bun. The mask will seal in
LOCAL ANSWER moisture, while the style will complement an effortless beach look. Soft beachy textures is a low maintenance, on-trend style that works perfectly at the pool, then the bar. To achieve this look, wet hair and divide into four sections. Braid loosely, and then leave the hair to dry naturally. Once dry, gently run fingers through the hair for soft, sexy waves. To keep that sexy holiday look and to replenish your hair following a holiday spent out in the sun; indulge in an injection of moisture. Continue to use a deep conditioning treatment
weekly to maintain the moisture in your hair. EXPERT TIPS: • Allow hair to dry naturally, instead of rubbing it dry with a towel. Air-drying hair will prevent breakage and cuticle damage, which maintains softness and combats frizz. • Add texture for a messed-up look by twisting individual sections as hair dries. • After every dip, rinse out salt water and chlorine with fresh water, and then reapply a sun protection spray. • Following a beach or pool day, apply a leave-

in conditioner. It will make it easier to comb out the hair, and prevent unnecessary breakage. Sea water can lead to split ends so plan to visit the salon for a trim just before jet-setting away.

In The Garden
June Gardening Tips
A
long with all the flourish and splendour this month brings to the garden, weeds are thriving too, so keep on top of the situation; hoe on warm days and remove the winds from the garden. Remember to put them in your compost or garden recycle bin. Another constant task around the garden at this time of year is deadheading - remove spent flowers from containers, pots, hanging baskets, beds and borders and feed them all occasionally with liquid feed. Deadheading diverts energy from producing seed into producing new flowers.....so is a good thing all round. Theoretically we should be home and dry now weather-wise, but be prepared Browniestyle in case of a late frost - keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast and don’t be tempted to put out your really tender plants until the middle of the month unless the weather changes dramatically. If it’s dry, attack weeds with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 39
indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact so be careful to not kill you flowers. Water is a precious commodity – instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water, however, for lime-hating plants such as camellias - they will not thank you for it! Watering is essential once the weather is drier and warmer - water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often (containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot

LOCAL ANSWER and windy) - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. For large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour - hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plants is to water in well. Beforehand, soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives and keep an eye out for pests around the garden. Try to keep the use of chemical controls to a minimum - they may kill off pests, but they also kill off the beneficial insects that prey on them such as ladybirds and hoverfly larvae. THE ENEMY - SLUGS, SNAILS, CATERPILLARS, APHIDS.... Continue the campaign against slugs and snails. They love the young shoots of delphiniums and the like, so use petfriendly slug pellets, drench the ground around hostas with liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface or invest in a biological control (this employs nematodes to deliver a slug-lethal bacterial infection) - all are available from local garden centres. Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off....what you do with them is up to you. Birds are your friends here - flat stones artfully located are useful accessories for birds to practise their snail bashing techniques. Caterpillar and aphid infestations can be dealt with by hand if caught early enough,

In The Garden but should the situation veer out of control you will have to resort to insecticides or grin and bear it! Don’t forget aphids and other sap-sucking insects can transmit viruses so don’t give in to the sympathy vote. LAWNS Mow, mow, mow! Your lawn will be in full growth this time of the year. Mowing your lawn little and often is better than a radical attack every now and then. Left too long between cuts and the job becomes much harder, so mow weekly if possible. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so with a high nitrogen fertiliser - this will encourage good ‘leaf’ (ie grass blade) development. If your lawn is mossy, use a fertiliser which contains mosskiller and if your weed content is higher than you might wish, use lawn weedkiller....although this will also kill any wild flowers. Wehn adding your grass clippings to your compost try to add your grass clippings to the compost heap in shallow layers....a huge dollop will only turn slimy and spoil your compost. Remember to not compost clippings that have had weed and feed applied. Don’t let newly laid lawns dry out in hot weather - water in the evenings and if there is a heat wave, consider leaving the lawn longer than usual just to help it through the hot weather. BULBS, FLOWERS AND CONTAINERS Protect new shoots from slugs....egg shells, beer, nuclear bombs (only joking) – use whatever your conscience allows. Plant out summer bedding and ensure it remains well watered. Plant out hardened off and sprouted dahlias PAGE 18 | Local Answer - Issue 39
after the last frost and put canes by them for support later. Thin annuals fortnightly to prevent their becoming spindly and leggy - a gap of 6 inches between seedlings is usually about right. For next year’s spring and winter bedding (pansies, wallflowers etc) plant between now and July. Cut back spring flowering perennials - remove the old foliage, lift and divide large clumps and replant with plenty of water and organic fertiliser. Lift and divide primroses and relocate to a nursery bed for planting out next spring. Cut back any dead foliage on bulbs (don’t be tempted to do this too early as they will go on strike next year!) - once it has died back, lift and divide any overcrowded clumps of bulbs. Cut back spreading and trailing plants such as alyssum and aubretia to encourage fresh growth and new flowers.

Pots and containers desperately need regular watering, especially if they are near a wall and in a sheltered position. Take care not to overwater.
And now for the fun bit - designing your container with the huge range of delightful plants available traditional geraniums, fuchsias of the trailing and upright variety, verbenas, surfinias and a whole host of others will give you a wonderful show until autumn. Don’t forget to include one or two foliage plants too - silver or lime green Helichrysum or golden Lysimachia Goldilocks provide background and contrast to set off your display beautifully.

Sow annuals such as cornflowers, larkspurs and night-scented stocks - clashing colours just don’t matter in a garden, but remember to plant taller plants behind shorter ones. icrosoft revealed its new edition to it family, last month, with the all new Xbox, named the Xbox One.
This will be the first major revamp of Xbox since 2005, yes the Xbox is now eight years old, and is said to be a consol to "change everything". The console is much more than a "games console" for simply playing games as the new Xbox one will integrate TV, internet and gaming in what Microsoft describes as 'rocket-science stuff' The Xbox One will revolutionise its users' lifestyles by integrating the cloud, voice control and gesture technology into a simple, intuitive machine says Microsoft. The console its self boasts a 8 core CPU, 8gb System Memory, 64-bit architecture, 500gb HDD, Blu-ray Drive, 802.11n Wireless with Wi-Fi Direct, HDMI In/Out, USB 3.0 and an all new kinect. Many Microsoft users will be very familiar with allot of the new features on the new Xbox as many of the features of Windows 8 PAGE 22 | Local Answer - Issue 39
have been integrated into the Xbox One. For example the "snap mode" which will allow users to run two activities at once such as watching live TV through the Xbox one and surfing the internet or talking on Skype at the same time on the TV screen. The biggest change is the new and more advanced Kinect system which boast a new HD camera and IR camera which with the new ultra-sensitive sensor will allow the Kinect to track wrist, shoulder, head, and leg rotations and even be able to read users' heart rate by detecting colour variations in the skin. Its main camera can record 1080P RGB video at 30 frames per second. This whole new range of technology will bring on a whole new range of games including popular titles such as Halo, FIFA, Call Of Duty, Project Gotham Racing and much much more. The Xbox One is due for release later this year in the USA but the UK release date has not yet been published.

Wonders Of The World IT’S GREAT TO APPRECIATE THE REAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD!
A
group of students was asked to list what they thought were the present “Seven Wonders of the World.” Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes: 1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids 2. Taj Mahal 3. The Grand Canyon 4. Panama Canal 5. Empire State Building 6. St. Peter’s Basilica 7. China’s Great Wall
The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.”
While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list.
The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. It’s down to attitude, really, but the things we look on as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous!
The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there are so many.”
A gentle reminder, in fact, that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man.
The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ are: 1. To see 2. To hear 3. To touch 4. To taste 5. To feel 6. To laugh 7. And to love.”
