I
t's a strange phenomenon but having watched BBC3's fly-on-the-wall documentary 'The Call Centre', I find it hard not to have huge respect mixed with a degree of contempt for larger-than-life 'Big Nev' Wilshire, who runs the call centre featured in the series which has been a hit on BBC3. It shows Nev's unusual management style, which often requires staff members to sing and dance in the office, wear fancy dress and play zany games. Hundreds of thousands of young people are now employed in the industry and I know that because I'm convinced I've spoken to most of them over the past few months! Usually when I'm just about to eat! So if you haven't watched the programme it's probably an indication that you are already so fed up with the call centre concept that you want nothing more to do with it - ever! It has been, however, an entertaining insight into the pressures faced by many young people who - rather than take the Government's meagre benefits to sit around on their backsides PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 40
the 'Cold Call.'
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the programme is Nev's real life similarity to the caricature that was David Brent in 'The Office' because while his weird antics and innovative attempts to keep his staff both happy and motivated are obviously well-meaning they can also be excruciatingly embarrassing. His attempts to get a date for one of his workers who had been dumped by her boyfriend, for instance, was enough to make anybody watching it cringe.
What the programme has done, though, is give more of an insight into who these anonymous voices who interrupt our meals actually are and having seen how difficult
LOCAL ANSWER it must be for them in what can only be described as a horrible job it has certainly enabled me to be more sympathetic towards their previously unwelcome advances. Now, of course, the publicity the company has attracted thanks to the series has led to it being hit with a massive fine for nuisance calls. The Company, under the various names under which it trades (National Energy Services and We Claim You Gain), will have to pay £225,000 after the fine was handed down by the Information Commissioners Office (ICO). Staff make cold-calls to homes hoping to find people who were mis-sold payment protection insurance but it was found that the companies were targeting people who had registered to have their names removed from lists used by marketing companies with the Telephone Protection Service. Around 2,700 complaints were made by people who had been called wrongly. 'We Claim You Gain' was dealt a £100,000 fine

for nuisance calls, while 'Nationwide Energy Services' was fined £125,000. “The public have told us that they are fed up with the constant bombardment of nuisance calls,” ICO director of operations Simon Entwisle said in a recent interview, "and while the activities of Nev and his call centre employees have provided entertainment for many, they hide a bigger problem within the cold calling industry. People have the legal right not to receive marketing calls and these companies have paid the price for failing to respect people's wishes." He's right, though. It has been pretty entertaining!

Keeping Safe And Healthy On Your Sunshine Holiday.
G
reat food, plenty of wine, and sun, sun and more sun are the obvious ingredients for a great holiday but on the flipside they can also be a sure-fire recipe for disaster. We all go abroad hoping to come back with a lovely healthy tan and the feel-good factor that a great holiday gives you as the winter months return. You do, however, have to be very careful in the way you try to achieve those aims so we've put together a few reminders that will stand you in good stead if you adhere to them. SUNBURN PREVENTION. Select an appropriate sunscreen by checking the SPF level of your sunscreen. The SPF, or "sun protection factor" number, contrary to popular belief, does not signify how strong the SPF is. It tells you how long it will keep you protected––theoretically. For example, it is calculated by how many minutes it would normally take for your skin to burn multiplied by the number that tells you how long it should last. If you burn easily though, you should reapply often, say every few hours, or more often. So, if you burn in 10 minutes of sun exposure without any protection, SPF 30 will keep you protected for 300 minutes (in theory!). Moreover, don't adopt a false sense of security that wearing PAGE 6 | Local Answer - Issue 40
sunscreen (no matter how high its SPF) allows you to stay outdoors without taking other precautions, such as wearing adequate clothing, keeping to the shade and staying out of the sun during the hottest time of the day. Sunscreen is only one factor in your overall approach to protecting yourself in the sun. After all that good food and wine, DON'T fall asleep In the sun, no matter how tempting the warm sunshine, cool breezes and gentle lapping of the waves on the shore may be. Waking up like a lobster isn't funny and can actually be very dangerous so if you see some poor soul asleep and burning in the sun, do them a favour and gently waken and warn them. Once you've selected the appropriate sunscreen apply it to raised areas like tops of feet, thighs, boobs, lips, nose, forehead, backs of calves, arms, bottom and shoulders. Be careful to re-apply sun lotion after prolonged periods in the water because there is no 100% waterproof sun cream! A t-shirt is the equivalent of sun-factor 25. This means you can stay in the sun 25 times longer with a t-shirt on than without (you will still get burnt after a while.) If you do find you've accidentally overdone it, however, vinegar the colder the better - applied over the sore areas will soothe and prevent peeling. Never scrub a burned skin.
LOCAL ANSWER HEAT RASH (also called prickly heat, sweat rash, or miliaria) is a common condition in which areas of the skin itch intensely and often feel prickly or sting. It arises when a person sweats more than usual and the sweat glands become blocked. Heat rash looks like tiny bumps surrounded by a zone of red skin. It usually occurs on clothed parts of the body, such as the back, abdomen, neck, upper chest, groin or armpits and goes away on its own within a few days. Heat rash occurs most often in hot, humid conditions. In most cases, heat rash will clear up on its own in a few days if the affected area is kept cool and dry. Avoid excessive heat and humidity and cool off with a fan, take a cool shower or bath and let your skin air dry, or if you have airconditioning, use this to cool yourself. Once the skin is cool and dry again, don’t use any type of oil-based product, which might block your sweat glands. Calamine lotion and/or hydrocortisone cream can relieve itching and irritation. GIPPY TUMMY, SORE THROAT AND DIZZINESS Downing iced drinks in the blazing sun causes severe temperature clashes in your system, resulting in the above symptoms. As these are seldom felt till many hours later, possibly after a meal, it is easy to wrongly blame the food! Remember to stick to body temperature drinks while you're in the sun and an iced drink once you've cooled down in the shade. Wash frequently so you get rid of any bugs you may have picked up from the sea and sand. Local water can never be trusted so buy bottled water which is usually reasonably cheap if you buy the bigger sizes. Our eating habits tend to change in hot weather but being on holiday gives us a tendency to eat more than usual and at odd times of the day. Try to be strong in that respect and remember that food that is in season not only tastes better but may contain ingredients that suit the body’s needs for that time of year.
Summer fruits with a high fluid content, such as strawberries, help to keep us hydrated in the heat, for instance. It also goes without saying that just because we are on holiday doesn't mean we have to drink to excess. Hangovers can spoil a whole day and you'll live to regret overdoing it. Have a drink, by all means, but stick to what you know you can take! Lisa LocalAd. 14/06/2013 09:01 Page 1

You Can Tell Jokes In Church!
T
he modern Church is a lot less stuffy than it used to be and these are some of the stories doing the rounds amongst our particular congregation. We like them. Hope you do too! Two boys were walking home from Sunday school after their Sunday school teacher had been telling them about the devil. One said to the other, 'What do you think about all this Satan stuff?' The other boy replied, 'Well, you know how Santa Claus turned out. It's probably just your Dad.' Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, 'Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied, 'Because white is the colour of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?' A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, 'Dear Lord, please don't let me be late! Dear Lord, please don't let me be late!' While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once again began to pray 'Dear Lord, please don't let me be late...but please don't shove me either!' PAGE 10 | Local Answer - Issue 40
Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, 'My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem ,they give him ÂŁ50.' The second boy says, 'That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him ÂŁ100.' The third boy says, 'I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect all the money!' An elderly woman died last month. Having never married, she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, 'They wouldn't take me out while I was alive, I don't want them to take me out when I'm dead.' A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with them to Jerusalem . A small child replied, 'They couldn't get a baby-sitter.' A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to 'Honour thy father and thy mother,' she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?' Without missing a beat, one little boy answered, 'Thou shall not kill.'

The New Vauxhall Insignia More Car For Less Money!
T
he Vauxhall Insignia has always been popular with company car drivers and fleet managers, and the 2013 revamped version looks set to improve its business potential with a major overhaul that provides four new engines, improved efficiency (including a 99g/km option on two of its engines) and a major price cut. The new range has improved equipment levels on all models yet Vauxhall has been able to slash prices by up to £4825. Available as a five door hatch, a four door saloon or a Sports Tourer estate the new Insignia starts at £16,279, around £2000 less than the current entry-level model and Vauxhall claims the price reductions make the Insignia a more appealing choice for company car choosers because of the reduced tax bills. Versions with CO2 emissions of 99g/km are powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine and have a Government average economy of 76.3mpg. That's enough to take these models
PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 40
into the 14% Benefit in Kind tax band for the 2013/2014 tax year. The more powerful 161bhp version delivers 65.7mpg, and emits 114g/km of CO2. In all there are four new engines including the 99g/km 138bhp 2.0 CDTi, the all new 1.6 SIDI 168bph Turbo and a new 240bph 2.0 SIDI Turbo petrol.
Exterior changes are reasonably subtle with a new, wider, high-gloss chrome grille, set a little lower than before, as well as redesigned headlights, black inserts in the fog lamps, a
LOCAL ANSWER new crease on the C-pillar, slimmer tail lights and a high-gloss chrome logo bar at the back. A host of updates have been carried out inside, however, with a completely redesigned centre console with fewer buttons. Standard equipment now includes a digital radio and an instrument cluster with a switchable 8-inch LCD capable of displaying audio, navigation or Smartphone information. It can also function as an analogue or digital speedometer. An additional 8-inch ‘infotainment’ display is optional, with touch screen functionality and 3D navigation. Available trims have been reduced from the current 14 down to 8 and range from Design to Elite and as with all new Vauxhalls,
the Insignia will be supplied with a ‘lifetime’ warranty up to 100,000 miles. The car will make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

n last months edition we told you about the reveal of Microsoft new Xbox One due for release later this year. This month we would like to tell you about another reveal, and thats the reveal of Sonys next generation system, the PlayStation 4. Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 last month at the E3 conferance in Los Angeles. Where Xbox launched their latest edition as “much more than a games console", Sony have aim there new console at the gamer. The console its self boasts a 8 core x86-64 AMD “Jaguar” CPU, 1.84 TFLOPS, AMN nextgeneration Radeon based graphics engine, GDDR5 8GB of ram, 500GB hard disk drive, USB 3.0 plus HDMI, Wifi and BlueRay that we have come to expect from PlayStation. One thing many PlayStaion gamers enjoyed over the Xbox was the ability to play online with your friends without having to pay for any extra subscriptions, how ever from what has been realised, the new PlayStaion will not offer the free online service and will instead be based on Sonys PlayStaion Plus Network. PAGE 14 | Local Answer - Issue 40
PlayStation Plus is a wonderful service, offering subscribers a vast amount of free content for their buck. However, the PS3’s online service in general was always lacking as opposed to the Xbox 360 and LIVE. Sony have stated that this will change with the PlayStation 4, and although the console will require a mandatory subscription to PlayStation Plus, gamers should expect a much more accomplished service this time around. And lots of free games. Sony has shocked the competition though with its release price of around £349 which is a good £80 cheaper than the Xbox One. Sony has release lots of trailers showcasing the games on the PlayStation 4 which include s an new Assassins Creed, Battlefield 4 and much more. Sony have not yet released a release date for the PlayStaion 4, how ever there has been some controversy online regarding an image of a poster showing the date 13th November, however this date has not been confirmed. All we can assume is that the date will similar the the Xbox One release and in time for Christmas this year.

In The Garden
July Gardening Tips
W
ater thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this must be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 40
greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater in butts (available from the centre) and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water for lime-hating plants such as camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas - they will not thank you for it! The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. Hoe beds and borders to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed. If it’s dry, attack perennial weeds like ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. If you don’t have time to do this, at least cut the culprits down to prevent them from setting seed.
LOCAL ANSWER Keep your pond topped up with fresh water - a build up of algae in warm weather can be toxic, if not fatal, for animals.
Lawns Keep mowing your lawn but raise the height of your blades if the weather remains hot. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so with a summer lawn feed. If your lawn is mossy or full of weeds, use a feed with mosskiller or weedkiller, although this will also kill any wild flowers. If you have the lot, use combined feed, weed and mosskiller! Add your grass clippings to the compost heap in shallow layers....a huge dollop will only turn slimy and spoil your compost. Don’t let newly laid lawns dry out in hot weather - water in the evenings and if there is a heat wave, consider leaving the lawn longer than usual just to help it through the hot weather.

out some of the oldest wood (up to a third of the bush) right down to the base - don’t leave it too late or the new growth will not have enough time to produce a decent show for next year’s flowering.....procrastinate at your peril!
Pick sweet peas regularly - this is in effect early deadheading and will ensure continued flowering. Remember sweet peas are thirsty plants so keep them well watered. Go for instant impact and colour in your garden or on your terrace with a ready planted container......or for a special occasion sink whole containers into your borders for a fabulous instant makeover!
Trees, shrubs and climbers Trim hedges such as privet, hawthorn, beech, yew, thuja, leylandii and lonicera - don’t bother with secateurs unless you have time on your hands - a broad chop with sharp shears is fine. Keep spraying roses with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Do this in the evening to avoid harming bees. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn. Remember stricken leaves must be burnt - do not leave them on the compost heap as this will become the perfect incubation site. Feed with a foliar feed and beware greenfly - treat immediately if an infestation occurs - ask in the garden centre for advice as to what to use if you are unsure.

LOCAL ANSWER Keep deadheading roses regularly, cutting back to the nearest five leaf spray with sharp secateurs - just breaking the stem leaves the rose more vulnerable to infection. Keep an eye open for rose suckers (which appear from low down and have different leaves) and remove by pulling downwards and tearing - cutting them will merely encourage them to reappear! Keep tying in climbing and rambling roses horizontally - this encourages more flower production as fewer side-shoots are produced due to restricted sap flow. Cut long lavender stalks, tie into bunches and hang upside down for wonderful dried lavender. Try tucking a sprig or two under your pillow to help you sleep peacefully.

be dealt with by hand if caught early enough, but should the situation career out of control you will have to resort to insecticides or grin and bear it! Greenfly and blackfly especially love the heat and don’t forget aphids and other sap-sucking insects can transmit viruses so don’t give in to the sympathy vote. Try and attract beneficial insects by growing a wide variety of plants - ladybirds and their larvae are consummate aphid predators, as are lacewings and even wasps.

Preserving Summer
P
erhaps the nicest part of July is the fact that everything that makes a typical British summer food-wise is now available with 'pick your own' signs going up all over the countryside. Raspberries, strawberries, currants and gooseberries are all becoming readily available and cherries, although in limited supply, can also sometimes be found. In warm, sheltered places it is even possible to grow peaches. Edible flowers make salads and desserts look pretty but also provide unusual and evocative flavours – try scented geraniums, lavender, blackcurrant or peach leaves in desserts; nasturtiums in salads and deep-fried courgette flowers as a first course. There are some marvelous ways to enjoy this wonderful British fruit fest immediately, but you can also preserve some of them for the long winter months where summer fruits make a wonderful change. Canning or preserving in jars is probably the easiest and most successful method . Here's how it's done! Select the fruit you want to preserve. It should be firm and ripe, with little or no visible bruising, insect damage or decay. Choose a firm fleshed fruit like pears, apples, or peaches PAGE 22 | Local Answer - Issue 40
to begin with. These are easier to prepare and more forgiving than soft fruits like figs, plums, or similar fruits. Peel the fruit but take care to cut the skin as thinly as possible. A little skin left here and there doesn't affect the quality of the finished product, but cutting too deep will definitely decrease the amount you have left to can. Soft fruits, like tomatoes and peaches, can often be "slipped". Use a sieve or slotted spoon to lower the fruit into boiling water for 30-60 seconds. The skin may appear to crack or split. Then use the strainer or slotted spoon to lift the fruit into cool water so that you can handle it safely. The skin should slip right off when you touch it. You may have to finish up with a knife.
LOCAL ANSWER Cut the fruit in half, usually top to bottom, and remove the core and stem. If done correctly, this will leave you two solid, edible halves of your fruit. Also remove any damaged or spoiled parts. Tomatoes may be canned whole. Slice the fruit to the size you prefer. You may want halves, particularly for pears, or you may want smaller slices for use in pies or other pastries. Place the fruit in a pot large enough to cook it without boiling over, add an inch or so of water, and place on a stove burner on high or medium high. Add sugar to suit your taste, but at least enough to create a syrup for the canning medium you will need later on. One cup of sugar per quart of fruit is a good place to start, but this can be adjusted widely depending on the tartness of your fruit and personal taste. Add additional seasonings if you like. For apples and pears, cinnamon will give it a little extra flavor, but use it sparingly, as it will turn the syrup and fruit brown if used in excess. Bring the combined ingredients to a boil, and reduce heat to medium or medium low, just enough to keep it boiling. Prepare your jars, rings, and lids while the fruit is cooking. You should have your jars prewashed before you start cooking the fruit, and using a dishwasher is a quick, sanitary, and easy way to do this. Now you need to set the jars out on a counter space with adequate working room, set the bands and dome lids within reach on a clean, dry towel, and have a ladle or dipper for scooping the fruit and syrup into the jars. Simmer the fruit until tender, usually only about 20 minutes or so. The flesh of the fruit should appear translucent and the juice should cook out to form a good bit of syrup in your pot. Turn off the heat under the pot, then move the pot to a location near your jars. Scoop the fruit out of the pot into the jars, filling them to about half an inch of the top. A large slotted spoon will do this, or some other utensil which can be used as a dipper. Fill the
jars to within a quarter inch or so of the top with the syrup, and as they are filled, place the lids on each one and screw on a band, tightening it snugly. Some people invert the jars so the hot contents will sterilize the lids, but for the best results and maximum safety, processing the jars after filling is required.
Process your jars of fruit. Make sure the rings are snug, and bring a large pot of water to boil on the stove. There are special pots, called "canning pots" for this step, but any large pot will do , although having a wire rack in the bottom to reduce the chance of the jars breaking is certainly beneficial. Boil the jars with the water level half an inch or so above the tops for the recommended amount of time, a few minutes is usual, for the jar size and fruit you are using. This insures the contents are returned to a hot enough temperature to kill any microorganisms which have survived up to this point. Place the jars on a dish towel on the counter or table to cool down. The dome lids should recess downward as the contents cool, making a "pop" noise when they do so. If any jar lids fail to snap down within a few hours, they are probably not sealed properly, and should be refrigerated until used. Wipe the jars, lids, and rings dry to keep them from rusting, and store in a cool, dry place. You summer fruits are now ready to be enjoyed over the cold winter months. Sometimes, Revenge Is So Sweet!
J
ennifer's wedding day was fast approaching and nothing could dampen her excitement - not even her parent's nasty divorce.
Her mother had found the PERFECT dress to wear, and would be the best-dressed motherof-the-bride ever! A week later, Jennifer was horrified to learn that her father's new, young wife had bought the exact same dress as her mother! Jennifer asked her father's new young wife to exchange it, but she refused. "Absolutely not! I look like a million dollars in this dress, and I'm wearing it," she replied. Jennifer told her mother who graciously said, ''Never mind sweetheart. I'll get another dress. After all, it's your special day.''
A few days later, they went shopping and did indeed find another gorgeous dress for her mother. When they stopped for lunch, Jennifer asked her mother, ''Aren't you going to return the other dress? You really don't have another occasion where you could wear it." Her mother just smiled and replied, ''Of course I do, dear.....I'm wearing it to the rehearsal dinner the night BEFORE the wedding.'' (Now we ask you - is there a woman out there, anywhere, who wouldn't enjoy this story? Sometimes, revenge really is so sweet.)

Careful Signings Are The Key To A Good Season.
I
t's true that in life the less money you have the more careful you need to be with it and the almost deafening silence in relation to signings currently coming from The Riverside is proof that Tony Mowbray is sticking to that principle. He has taking great pains to outline the huge amount of work and research currently being undertaken in that direction and both he and the scouting staff have looked at a considerable number of players both at home and abroad. But the fact that 'Boro are still paying for some of the snap decisions made during the Strachan era makes the importance of ultimately making the right decisions this time the defining factor in the kind of season we can look forward to. One hopefully advantageous signing that has been made, however, is the recruitment of former Chelsea Medical Director Bryan English whose knowledge and experience has been targeted in an attempt to alleviate the dreadful injury situation 'Boro encountered over the last couple of seasons. Loss of vital players at important times cost 'Boro dearly and made a fairly thin squad look even thinner. "There were too many injuries here last season," said Mowbray, "but Bryan is a medical and sports expert and he'll bring his vast knowledge and experience to the problem." If he can work some kind of miracle and keep us comparatively injury free he'll be worth whatever he's being paid. PAGE 28 | Local Answer - Issue 40
The other potential signing at the time of writing will be former Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead who has enjoyed a prolonged period in the Premiership prior to being released by new Stoke City Manager Mark Hughes. The performances of Grant Leadbitter last season proved that experience is vital and if Whitehead can emulate his former Sunderland team mate and produce the goods he could provide some additional stability in midfield. It's down the entire spine of the team that problems became evident in the second half of last season, however, and I for one am pleased we have decided not to take up the option of an extra year on Andre Bikey's contract. He always looked like an accident waiting to happen and sadly it did -quite often! Keeping Jonathan Woodgate fit for longer would be a huge boost, of course, because he is still a class act, but having a regular centre back partnership that picks itself week after week is the real stability we need to find. The goals for column was pretty poor by the end of the season yet we had a huge number of different names contributing so if we can keep the goals against column down a bit and find someone who can be truly prolific the season might not be as difficult as it looks at the moment. We wait for further news with baited breath.
