Mrs Browns Boys Another national treasure!

O

ver the years there has been a considerable number of TV series that - because of their almost strange nature and content - have been elevated to cult status. As far back as the early sixties we saw 'Steptoe and Son' - a father and son 'rag and bone' partnership - among the first to be given the accolade. Since then we've had hugely successful series that have been based on some weird and wonderful scenarios. Who would have thought that a bunch of old blokes led by the pompous, self appointed Captain Mainwaring would have become the National treasure that 'Dad's Army' obviously became? Or that two brothers who spend their lives wheeling and dealing, not necessarily on the right side of the law, would make 'Only Fools and Horses' one of the most popular comedy series ever. We've also had a bunch of priests banished to a remote Irish Island by the Roman Catholic Church (Father Ted), an old lag serving his time in prison (Porridge), a completely irrational hotel keeper in Torquay (Fawlty Towers) and a series that took us through centuries with a member of the Blackadder family serving whoever was Monarch at the time. All totally

PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 41

brilliant comedy with not only great punch lines but always some wonderfully poignant and tear evoking moments that will live with us forever. And now there's another. 'Mrs Brown's Boys' is different in many ways but still has the perfect combination of genuinely funny characters, great story lines and very, very funny dialogue. OK, the language means it can't be shown in the early evening but the overall concept of a little Irish widow aggressively protecting her family from the rest of the world is made even funnier by the fact that as Brendan O Carroll himself puts it - 'I'm just a man in a dress.' But he's actually much more than that. He brings a wonderful belief to his portrayal of Mrs Brown and as the central character he brings authenticity to the role of a mother in modern day life. That his own wife and son are part of the cast gives the whole thing a warmth that makes them a joy to watch. The show is now readily available on UK Gold and the BBC is also repeating the latest series so if you haven't already become hooked then there are loads of opportunities to see what you've been missing.

A wonderful Royal moment

I

am writing this on Tuesday the 23rd of July - the night that William and Kate first presented their little boy to the world. Can I say that as far as I am concerned it was a wonderful moment and regardless of your personal opinion of the Royal Family this was a loving couple who were obviously delighted to show their new baby to as many people as possible. That so many turned up and queued for so long for just a glimpse of the new baby is a perfect demonstration of the fact that the majority of this country loves and admires the work and commitment of the Windsor family. Believe me, I remember that feeling because having had two absolutely gorgeous little boys I finally managed a girl. To me, my wife and both my boys she is still a wonderful gift that we never cease to appreciate and announcing her presence to the rest of my family is still one of my proudest moments. In many parts of the world - especially the USA -the members of the Royal family are the ultimate celebrities. But the contradictory comparison between them and the people to whom magazines like 'Hello' and 'Next' are usually dedicated is precisely that - dedication. The Royal family have PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 41

little choice but to dedicate their lives to promoting Britain to the rest of the world. There is absolutely no doubt - regardless of how prejudiced your views are against the money provided by the taxpayer -that they are worth every penny the country provides for their services. I can never remember walking past Buckingham Palace ( and I've done that on many occasions) without seeing tourists galore from China, Japan, India and everywhere else in the world - creating photographic memories of one of Britain's most iconic buildings. Its importance is undoubtedly because it is the home of the family who have ruled the Commonwealth for so many years.

It's a real fact that the combined abilities of advertising agencies like Saatchi & Saatchi

LOCAL ANSWER and publicity gurus like Max Clifford could never hope to emulate the effect that Queen Elizabeth and her family has on the way Britain is conceived by the rest of the world. That conception is changing, of course, but it is in keeping with the modernisation of many aspects of life in both colonial and third world countries that William and Harry's physical commitment to the armed forces demonstrates that the people in power are still prepared to serve their country. That they stand alongside their fellow combatants without a thought of the dangers involved or the privileges with which they were born should be hugely applauded.

Of all the Royal couples over the years they proved beyond doubt with the lovely way they introduced their little boy to the waiting media that they are happy to welcome the world into a lifestyle that has long been private. The influence that Diana had on the way the Royal Family now conducts itself cannot be ignored and we wish her oldest son every happiness with his lovely wife and his gorgeous little boy. Travel - Hand Baggage

B

ecause of the increased security measures prevalent in all UK airports there are strict rules on what you can and can't carry in the hand baggage you take on the plane. Careful packing is therefore vital and here are a few tips to help you enjoy a problem-free flight. Size - While the Department for Transport no longer sets a maximum size for items of hand baggage, you should always check size limits with your airline before you travel. They also have their own rules about the number of bags you are allowed so it's best to contact them if you have any queries. Laptops/electrical items - You're allowed to take electrical items like laptops, IPods and hairdryers in your hand baggage, but they have to be removed and screened separately. Essential medical equipment - You can take medical equipment if it is essential for your journey but it will be screened separately and must be accompanied by supporting documentation from a qualified medical professional. Pushchairs, walking aids and wheelchairs are usually permitted in the cabin, but they will need to be security checked.

Liquids - Wherever possible you should pack liquids in your hold baggage, as there are restrictions on the amount you can take in your hand baggage. Liquids includes all drinks (including water, fruit juice and soup), cosmetics and toiletries (including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lipsticks), sprays (including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants), pastes (including toothpaste), gels (including hair and shower gel and contact lens solution) and any other solutions and items of similar consistency. If you need certain liquids during the flight, you can take them into the cabin in limited quantities as follows: containers must hold no more than 100ml : containers must be carried in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm : contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed : the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top : each passenger can carry only one of these bags and they have to be presented for examination at the airport security point. Containers larger than 100ml (excluding essential medicines) will not be allowed through the security point even if they are only part full.

Car review

Audi RS7

I

n our monthly car reviews to date we have tended to concentrate on the more family friendly economic models that most of us would look towards if we were to buy a new car. Just for a change, however, we decided that this month we would go a little upmarket and check out the magnificent Audi RS7 Sportback, the latest in a line of super powerful RS offerings from the German car maker. You won't be able to order one till later in the year but for enthusiasts of power and speed it may well be something you would be happy to wait for. Based on the A7 executive hatch, the RS7 uses the same twin-turbo V8 as the S7 model, but the engine has been reworked to produce an impressive 552bhp (up from 414bhp). Power isn't the only thing to get a significant uplift, however, for Audi is asking ÂŁ83,495 for the RS7 - over ÂŁ20k more than the S7. The good news though, is that you do get extra equipment and the promise of class-leading performance. Driving the car is a revelation. There are no disappointments whatsoever because although it weighs almost two tonnes it roars from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds, beating rivals like the Mercedes CLS63 AMG, the

PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 41

Porsche Panamera Turbo and the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, This is due to the all-wheel drive and Tiptronic automatic transmission that smoothly glides through its eight gears. And while there is very little chance of you ever getting to use it, there is an electronically limited top speed of 155mph which can be increased to 174mph or 189mph if you pay extra. A pretty unnecessary expense if you take into account our top limit of 70mpg!

And despite the fact that it is a very heavy car, handling on corners and bends is still well controlled , especially if you go for the optional sports suspension and Dynamic Ride Control designed to reduce pitch and roll. Opt for the standard air suspension and 20-inch wheels, and the ride is firm but comfortable. Given its V8 engine and huge power,

LOCAL ANSWER you might expect the RS7 to be horribly inefficient, but a Cylinder on Demand system (which shuts off four cylinders under light loads) helps it average 28.8mpg and 229g/km of CO2 - not particularly economic if you're used to the modern average consumption in smaller cars, but better figures than all its key rivals nevertheless. Internally the car is what you would expect from both its price range and because it's an Audi - beautifully designed using high quality materials. There are also a few extra metallic accents and badges to set it apart from other models. The RS Super Sports leather seats are comfortable and supportive and the 14-speaker Bose stereo sounds impressive. DAB radio, LED headlights, sat-nav, climate control, sunroof and parking sensors are also provided as standard. The sat-nav is easy to use and boasts an eight-inch LCD screen. As with any sports design these days, there

is enough space to squeeze in four adults though the sloping roof in the rear means that the taller among you may have to get low in your seat. Storage space is quite generous, though and accessed by a wideopening tailgate. Folding rear seats add to the practicality. In all, then, it's a superbly built car with great looks and excellent performance values that despite its pretty high price tag still provides value for money. That's providing, of course, that you have plenty of it!

In The Garden

August Gardening Tips

T

he most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year?

strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily.

WATERING With the warm weather we having been having, including the hotest day on record, watering your garden is important. Remember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine.

Don’t forget our feathered friends - ensure bird baths are kept full of fresh clean water.

If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose! If it stays warm and dry, water saving PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 41

Keep your pond topped up, free of pond weed and clean - green algae can be toxic to pets.

WEEDING Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control.

LOCAL ANSWER Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth. DEADHEADING Carry on cutting back perennials and deadhead all dying and spent flowers on annuals, roses and shrubs; not only will your garden look immeasurably tidier, but the plant will be prevented from putting energy into the seed and may be encouraged to reflower.

S O B N I G

LANDSCAPES DRIVEWAY & PATIO SPECIALIST

When deadheading roses, cut the stem down with sharp secateurs; just breaking off old flowerheads will leave the rose vulnerable to infection. It’s too late to spray roses for blackspot now - once established spraying will not help. Pick off infected leaves and burn; do not put them on a compost heap where the spores will spread the disease. PRUNING Trim back lavender and rosemary after flowering without cutting too far into the old wood and summer prune wisteria by shortening wispy sideshoots to about 20cm. Soak the soil with a high potash fertiliser if your wisteria’s flowering performance was a bit feeble. COLLECT SEED HEADS Save seeds from the seed heads of hardy annuals, perennials, bulbs, rock plants, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have collected is fantastically rewarding, but you need to be vigilant; seed heads have a nasty habit of ripening and popping whilst your back is turned. Collect when nearly ripe - just as they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag, label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry.

next couple of days until back to the usual level – this will train the grass to grow leafily again. BULBS, FLOWERS AND CONTAINERS Plant autumn flowering bulbs and start to plant spring flowering bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, narcissus, alliums, iris and crocus. Always use the side bulbs of tulips and daffodils as they make perfectly good bulbs in their own right. Plant specially prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas. VEGETABLE GARDEN Plant - quick maturing crops including lettuces (this is the last month for sowing salads outside), sorrel and rocket. Also plant onion sets and seeds such as Chinese cabbage, spring cabbage, endive (chicory), radish, fennel, turnips and winter spinach. Harvest - EVERYTHING! Freeze if necessary or swap with others who are short of your crops and long on ones you haven’t grown. Harvest onions, shallots and garlic when their necks collapse and turn brown and papery. Leave to dry until the tops rustle like brown paper before storing. Continue to earth up celery, putting a layer of paper between the stems and the soil and raise marrows off the ground to prevent them rotting. ‘Stop’ outdoor tomatoes and remove

Food & Drink Making The Most Of The BBQ

A

fter what seems like a lifetime of wind, rain and cold weather we're having a summer at last and to prove it there's a smell of burnt sausage and beef burgers coming from almost every garden you pass. It's a shame because most people's idea of a barbie is sticking offal on coals and cremating it. Yet there are some fantastic ideas around for making scrumptious healthy barbecue dishes easily and cheaply. Firstly there's a fabulous barbecue sauce you can make in advance that will go with any meat you happen to be cooking. It's quick and easy. here's how... BARBECUE SAUCE Makes 400ml and takes less than 10 minutes to make INGREDIENTS; 350g ketchup ; 1 bay leaf ; 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce ; 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard ; 1/2 tsp smoked paprika ; dash of Tabasco ; Juice of 1 lemon ; Salt and pepper to season METHOD; In a pan, mix the ketchup, bay leaf, Worcestershire sauce, wholegrain mustard, smoked paprika, dash of Tabasco and lemon juice. Heat until bubbling and simmer for 2 minutes. Season. Serve as a sauce or cool and use as a marinade for ribs and chicken. And how about this for something a little different.... NEW POTATO, PARMA HAM, TOMATO AND CHEESE BROCHETTES. INGREDIENTS; (serves 4). 450g (1lb) new potatoes, gently rubbed to remove flaky skin ; 110g (4oz) Parma ham ; 225g (8oz) Somerset brie or mozzarella cheese, cut into chunks ; 16 baby plum or cherry tomatoes ; A few fresh bay leaves ; 4 tablespoons olive oil ; Grated rind and juice of 1 lemon ; 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian mixed dried herbs ; Salt and freshly ground black pepper METHOD; 1. Cook the new potatoes in lightly salted boiling water until tender - this will take about 15 minutes. Drain and allow to cool. 2. Make brochettes by threading them onto 8 soaked wooden kebab sticks or skewers, alternating them with folds of Parma ham, cheese, tomatoes and bay leaves. 3. Mix together the olive oil, lemon rind, lemon juice and dried herbs. Season with salt and pepper. Brush this dressing liberally over the food. 4. Barbecue or grill the brochettes for a few moments until the cheese begins to melt. Drizzle them with any remaining baste, then serve at once. PAGE 22 | Local Answer - Issue 41

Humour

After all - it's only a game!

A

fter a fantastic British Open Golf Championship we got to thinking how seriously all these amateur golfers take the game and felt that if we could shed a little humour onto their sport they might actually enjoy it a little more. These are the results and we'd like to think all you golfers out there can see the funny side. Despite being an exceptional golfer James decided to become a priest and joined an order that demanded - as well as the usual vows of poverty and chastity - that he never played golf again. Although difficult for such a fine golfer he agreed and was finally ordained a priest. After a while he woke up one beautiful Sunday morning and decided he just had to play golf. So he told his curate he was sick and he would have to take the service that day. He drove to a golf course about forty miles away so he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from his parish and began his round. Saint Peter was watching from above and exclaimed to The Lord, "You're not going to let him get away with this, are you?" The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I'm not." Just then Father James hit the ball straight towards the pin, where it dropped and fell into the hole. It was a 420 yard hole in one! St. Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked, "Why did you let him do that?" The Lord smiled and replied, "Who's he going to tell?" PAGE 24 | Local Answer - Issue 41

A fellow comes home after his regular Saturday golf game and his wife asks why he doesn't play with his friend Tom O'Brien anymore. The husband asks, "Would you want to play with someone who cheats, swears about everything, lies about his score, and has nothing good to say about anyone else on the course?" "Of course I wouldn't," replies the wife. "Well," says the husband, "neither would Tom O'Brien."

LOCAL ANSWER A wife asked her husband, "When I die, will you stop playing golf?" The husband replies, "It will take a while to get used to it but I would probably start playing again. "And if you got married again," she asked, would you marry another woman golfer?" Probably," was the reply. "In that case," she said, "please don't let her use my clubs." "No problem," said the husband, "she's left handed." A pair of rather mature golfers were on the bridge that allowed them to cross the river that ran through the golf course. Glancing down one of them said to the other "Just look at those stupid people fishing in the rain!" On his retirement George was given a set of golf clubs as his leaving present. Although he had always been exceptional at everything he tried he had never played a round of golf in his life so he took on the services of the club professional to teach him the game. He was a complete novice so the pro decided to take him gently through the preliminaries and firstly showed him how to drive the ball off the tee. After George had obviously mastered the technique he said, "just aim for that flag on that big square of green up there." George took aim and hit a perfect shot just two feet short of the flag. "That was great," said the pro, but the object is to actually to hit the ball into the cup under the flag." "Bloody hell," said George, "now you tell me!" Two Scots, Rabby and Angus are playing golf and come upon a water hole. Rabby tees up and hits it into the middle of the pond. He reaches into his bag to find that he is out of balls. He then asks Angus for a ball and proceeds to hit it into the pond as well. This goes on for 3 or 4 more times and when he asks Angus for yet another ball, Angus says."Rabby, these balls cost me a pretty penny," Rabby replies "Och, Angus if you cannee afford to play the game, ya should nee be out here"

A new golfer said to his caddy "I'd move heaven and earth to be able to break 100." "Try heaven," advised the caddie. "You've already moved most of the earth." A golfer hit his ball into a ravine. His buddies heard `whack, whack, whack’ on and on, until finally he got the ball out. His buddy asked, “How many strokes did it take you to get out of there?” He said, “three”, but his buddy said, “I heard seven.” His reply was, “Four of them were echoes.” Golfer: “This is the worst golf course I ever played.” Caddie: “This isn’t the golf course, sir! We left that over an hour ago” The inexperienced Golfer said "Well, Caddy, How do you like my game?" The caddy replied "Very good, Sir! But personally I prefer Golf." Golfer: "Well, I have never played this badly before! Caddy: "I didn't realize you had played before ,Sir." Golfer: "Caddy, Do you think my game is improving?" Caddy: "Oh yes, Sir! You miss the ball much closer than you used to." NOW YOU GUYS CAN GO AND ENJOY YOUR EIGHTEEN HOLES WITH NO PRESSURE AT ALL!

A Fantastic Summer Of Sport But What Will The Winter Bring?

W

ho’d have thought after last year’s unbelievable sporting summer that another one would come along so soon? And it’s even more amazing to thank that a fantastic set of British results could have been even better had Lee Westwood managed to stay cool and keep playing the great golf that had him two shots in the lead with only a few holes left. It is, however, hard to believe that anyone would begrudge a great bloke like Phil Mickelson his ultimate victory. So, after marvellous Murray at Wimbledon, the English test team showing the Aussies how to play cricket, the British Lions winning down under and a second consecutive Tour de France triumph – this time for Chris Froome - how much better can it get? Sadly, in the background to all this is the ludicrously over funded and over hyped Premiership where journalists and commentators fawn over the increasingly

foreign nature of a league that has lost its true identity and from which very few truly great English players now emerge. Most people are already fed up with the ‘Will he won’t he’ sagas of the likes of Rooney, Bale, Suarez and Fabregas and even more fed up with the ridiculous wage demands that only succeed in making the rich and mighty even more rich and mighty and the rest of the football world existing on a very un-level playing field. ‘Boro’s attempts to strengthen their squad have so far met with little success and dispensing with the number of players we have has left us very thin on the ground. It was a decision that had to be made, of course, and if nothing else it will give the younger lads the opportunity to show just how good the academy pipeline is. There’s still time before that first game, of course, but the important thing is going to be keeping the main backbone of the team fit. A repeat of last year’s injury traumas would be very bad news indeed!
