‘Molly’ Makes It Big In Hollywood!
W
hile American television sitcoms aren’t always everyone’s cup of tea there have been some spectacularly successful offerings over the years. ‘MASH’ must figure in any reasonably intelligent person’s top ten TV programmes of all time because it was simply wonderful. The dialogue, characters and storylines will live forever in the annals of TV ‘Greats.’ ‘Friends’ was also incredibly successful and spawned marvellous careers for all the show’s six main actors. ‘Cheers’ was another that could be included in a list of ‘greats’ but was ironically overshadowed by spin-off series ‘Frazier’ that followed one of the show’s lesser characters as he became a radio star in Seattle. More recent offerings have included Sky TV favourites ‘Two and a half men,’ ‘Rules of Engagement ’and ‘Everybody loves Raymond’ but my favourite has been the evolving story of two overweight characters that meet at a slimming club and find themselves attracted to each other despite their ungainly shapes. ‘Mike and Molly’ stars Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy as a New York cop and a primary school teacher, who – despite their respectively disfunctional families- end up PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 42
as a happily married couple. It has all the necessary requirements of a great show with superb acting, wacky characters, a touch of pathos and lots of quality humour. Her performances in the show won Melissa McCarthy an Emmy as outstanding lead actress in a comedy series and since then - In typical Hollywood fashion – she has gone on to making films. Her latest sees her starring with Sandra Bullock in ‘The Heat’ and it is absolutely fabulous. Bullock plays a skilled and efficient FBI investigator who is hated by her fellow agents because of her arrogance and condescending attitude. She is sent on a mission to Boston where she is teamed up with the foul mouthed, street-wise and extremely scruffy McCarthy and their respective attitudes clash to wonderful effect. While Bullock’s FBI agent plays everything by the book McCarthy’s character is rebellious, rugged and violent and the contrast creates some delightful and very funny moments. It’s a little bit like Miss Congeniality meets Dirty Harry but its fresh and very funny with both girls adding wonderfully to the comedy. It’s an exquisite piece of cinema and well worth seeing!

Repair Or Replace?
In a time of “white goods” ...

as your Hoover stopped working? Is your washing machine making weird sounds? Is the refrigerator not cooling properly? In a time of “white goods” many of us find it easier to simple replace a broken appliances rather than repair. However if you stay for a while and look into the appliance by your own then maybe you can evade the chances of such huge expenditures. Home appliances can often stop functioning due to a simple issue that can not be too hard to solve, many people just don't opt to take try. For those who do, they can give a small time to these machines and try to figure out the malfunctioning. most problems are caused by a blown fuse, short circuit in the electric channel or incomplete adjustments. By following are some of the self home appliance repair methods that you can perform without any fear: Analysing the power: Has the fuse in the plug blown? Try changing the fuse in the PAGE 6 | Local Answer - Issue 42
plug with a new fuse. Is the socket working? Try plugging a different appliance into the socket to test if its working. If not then try the appliance in a new socket or call an electrician to come and replace your socket. Does the appliance have an internal fuse? Look in the user manual to see if the appliance has an extra fuse inside that would need replacing.
LOCAL ANSWER It is always best if you are keeping a tool kit in your house. This tool kit contains all types of instruments that can help in mending such appliances easily. They will effectively help in self home appliance repair methods and will make your work easier. If you are attaining success with the above methods then it will be a win-win situation for you. For other issues, you can contact the professional service providers.
Cleanup of the interiors of the appliance: The best thing about electrical gadgets is that they are harmless unless they are plugged. When you find that your juice maker or whisker etc is not working, try giving it a good clean. Clean the interior parts of the machine first. It is not a tedious task to do. Rather it requires just a little reading and use of tools so that you can be able to open the covers and clean the insides of the device. Make sure that the machine is unplugged as well as your cleaning tool is dry. A can of compressed air is perfect for cleaning as you can spray in the air intakes and blow out any dirt and muck that could be the cause of the problem. Postcleaning, try plugging the machine and see whether it is working or not? Over heating: Many electrical items that have motors have a cut out when the appliance is to hot. If the appliance is hot to touch, then allow the item to cool and try again.
Many items can be repaired and a fraction of the cost. Some item like washing machines, lawn mowers, Hoovers and fridges often just need new drive belts or pulley bearings to repair non functioning parts or rattles. These can often cost very little and can be repaired at your home by a technician. It is advisable to employ a routine maintenance check of your appliances, for example running a cleaning cycle on your washing machine and dish washing using a cleaning agent and cleaning out the filters on your vacuum cleaner on a regular basis so that they will not go off at untimed situations thus giving you a hard time. Many user manuals will explain how to correctly maintain your appliances and many even have a troubleshooting guide to help pin point any problems. Please do not attempt to open or fix items when they are plugged in.

H
umour is a very individual thing because what one person finds funny can leave another totally cold. In my case, for instance, I can never understand how anyone finds Alan Partridge even remotely humorous but his new film has earned rave reviews so there are obviously people who find him hilarious. Some of the best examples of 'is it funny or not' can be found at this time of the year at the Edinburgh Festival where unknown comedians arrive from all over to try and make that initial breakthrough into the live circuit. Many well known faces have been discovered at the various venues around Edinburgh but to prove that even they don't always understand what's genuinely funny a number were recently asked by the Daily Mail for their favourite Festival jokes. Here are some of the extremely varied results. See how many of them you find funny! 'I can't drive which makes a trip to the safari park very scary.' (Lloyd Langford.) 'Last night my girlfriend and I watched three films back to back. Luckily, I was the one facing the telly.' (Tim Vine.) 'I was raised as an only child which really annoyed my sister.' (Will Marsh.) 'I needed a password eight characters long so I chose Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.' (Nick Helm.) 'I've just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I tell you - never again!' (Tim Vine). 'I bought one of those anti-bullying wristbands when they first came out. I say 'bought' but actually I pinched it off a short, fat ginger kid.' (Jack Whitehall.) 'Being an England football supporter is like being the over-optimistic parents of the fat kid on school sports day.' (John Bishop.) 'I was watching the London Marathon and saw one runner dressed as a chicken and another dressed as an egg. I thought 'this could be interesting!' (Paddy Lennox). 'I'm sure wherever my dad is he's looking down on us. He's not dead, he's just very condescending.' (Jack Whitehall.) 'My mum's so pessimistic that if there was an Olympics for pessimism she wouldn't fancy her chances.' (Nish Kumar.) 'I saw a documentary on how ships are kept together. Riveting! (Stewart Francis.) 'Phone hackers must have loads of patience. I can't even be bothered to check my own voicemails.' (Andrew Lawrence.) 'You know you're working class when your telly is bigger than your bookcase.' (Rob Beckett.) 'You know who really gives kids a bad name? Posh and Becks.' (Stewart Francis.) 'I picked up a hitchhiker. Well, you have to after you've hit them.' (Emo Phillips.) 'Crime in multi storey car parks. That is wrong on so many levels.' (Tim Vine.) PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 42

The New Seat Leon Efficient, Economical And Exciting!
S
eat’s new three -door Leon is an innovative piece of machinery that differs considerably from the original five door model. The Sports Coupe (SC) version, for instance, has a 35mm shorter wheelbase, a lower roofline and more prominent wheel arches so not only does it look more exciting it also handles better too. The steering is light but is really responsive on sharp corners and twisting country roads. As part of the VW Group the car has been given VW’s MQB platform and uses a range of turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines that despite being great on fuel consumption also offers impressive performance levels. Three different trims are available depending which engine is chosen, but all are equally well-equipped even though the ‘SE’ and the sportier ‘FR’ models are cheaper than most rivals. Amazingly for the price, they also have a really expensive feel to them. The new touches go a long way to confirming SEAT’s belief that it is the most stylish brand in the VW stable. In addition,
PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 42
the build quality is a big improvement on the previous-generation Leon. Sports seats come fitted as standard with mid and top-spec SE and FR models coming with 16-inch and 17inch alloys. A five-inch colour touch-screen display and Bluetooth are also standard across the range. A great driving position, meanwhile, offers both extreme comfort and excellent all round visibility.
By basing the new Leon and Leon SC on the same MQB platform as the VW Golf, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia - as well as all future VW
LOCAL ANSWER Group models from Polos to Passats - the Leon is cheaper to build and more reliable than ever thanks to enormous economies of scale. And with a full five-star Euro NCAP crash rating and all engines tried and tested across the entire range of VW group products, reliability is pretty much guaranteed. The reduction from five doors to three would normally mean that a car is less practical but in this case that is simply not true. The SC is still a roomy car with plenty of space for the normal run of back seat passengers, however tall. In addition, the sloped rear windscreen and shorter wheelbase have not prevented SEAT from providing the spacious 380-litre boot that puts the SC above its rivals. Opt for an ‘FR’ version and you get all-round parking sensors as standard too, so it’s easier to avoid a scrape when parking in tight situations.
the VW Golf and servicing costs should be relatively low as well. In all, then, a great little car that offers efficiency and economy beautifully combined with considerable excitement. What are you waiting for?
The Leon SC costs around £300 less than the equivalent five-door model and at its most efficient can offer an impressive 74.3mpg. That represents an increased fuel efficiency of 22 per cent over the old model, mainly through a weight reduction of up to 110kg and a more efficient aerodynamic shape. Finally, it will hold its price even better than

Beauty Tips Are Always Free And Available Just Trust The Experts!

espite the numerous times you've passed the beauty counters at department stores it's quite likely that your inherent distrust of sales people will make you walk away without realizing that they are genuinely there to help. For instance, beauty counter sales people have been trained to apply makeup for you if you ask them to. They are also there to give you tips and advice to teach you the best ways to look after your own skin albeit with the proviso that they insist their products are the best. Your own testing and sampling will ultimately show you which ones you should be buying regularly, but we have held discussions with a number of local beauty counter specialists and we are delighted to pass on their most important pieces of advice: 1. Apply some kind of moisturizer to your face regularly regardless of your skin type. Since sun protection is vitally important make sure the moisturizer you choose has an adequate SPF value. 2. Very delicate hair which is prone to frizz can be damaged by towel drying. Instead, you should lightly scrunch it, and then gently pat it to get it dry. This will cost you more time, but you will look better when it is finished. 3. Wash your makeup brushes frequently. Fill the sink with baby shampoo and warm water and work soap between bristles to make sure they are clean. Always rinse out all the soap and be sure the brushes are dry. This helps to keep makeup from building up. It also gets PAGE 14 | Local Answer - Issue 42
rid of bacteria that can damage your skin and cause acne. 4. You can greatly enhance your beauty plan by treating yourself to a regular appointment at a day spa. You not only feel more relaxed but your body will benefit too. Skin cleansing and pore opening are hugely beneficial results of a spa. 5. For fullness, brush your lips with Vaseline. If you do this each day your lips will look and feel a lot better. They will be softer than before and your lipstick will be easier to apply. 6. Fill a tiny jar with a favorite moisturizer and keep it in your purse or handbag. A small amount can therefore be applied any
LOCAL ANSWER time you feel your skin is drying. It's a simple procedure but one that will keep your skin fresh and alive. 7. Skip a shampoo because believe it or not it can have some beautiful benefits. That doesn't mean you should go all week without shampooing – simply skip a wash here and there. If you’re washing your hair day-in and day-out you’re putting strain on your scalp because too much shampooing will lead to dry scalp, dry hair and even dandruff. Not beautiful. 8. Throw out old make-up. You shouldn’t have any makeup in your bathroom that’s older than a year. 9. Make it a point to exfoliate a few times each week to remove the old, dead skin cells.
Letting them pile up can irritate, dry your skin and possibly cause pimples. So get yourself a gentle exfoliating product and keep some on hand.
10. Keep your eyes cool to bring out your natural beauty. This is especially important when the weather is hot. Dip some cotton pads into cucumber juice and let them rest on your eyes for several minutes each day to help eliminate any dark under eye circles.
All very simple pieces of advice but when you think about it they really will help you to look and feel your best. And if you want any further help, why not stop off at your local beauty counter and ask for their advice. They really are trained to help you! Within Bannatynes • Myton Road •

In The Garden
September Gardening Tips
S
eptember is the time of the year when the garden plants start to die back and the leave start to change colour. Autumn is setting in. There is still plenty to keep you busy in the garden though. Start your compost Start your compost going by buying a compost bin or building a partially enclosed and easily accessible area for a heap. It is essential to replace the goodness in soil and autumn produces quantities of garden waste that will add invaluable organic richness back into your soil next spring. Remember to add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable plants are ideal but NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material to your compost heap - it will nurture whatever villain you are trying to eliminate with loving care! Clear garden debris Keep weeding; most perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller this month and systemic weedkillers will carry on working throughout the winter. Also clear any debris and diseased material from your garden. Pests and diseases that overwinter in your garden will reappear next spring with a vengeance so PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 42
get rid of them now. Burn diseased material and put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost. Clean out the greenhouse Once tomatoes and other greenhouse crops are over, give the greenhouse a thorough clean to prevent pests from making a home in that lovely warm environment, ready to leap into action next spring. Dig clay soil If your soil is heavy clay, start digging it over now whilst it is still relatively dry. Add plenty of organic matter to improve the quality and pea shingle to improve the drainage. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the cold will break the lumps down, making spring planting infinitely easier! Lawns Established lawns - reduce the frequency of mowing now and towards the end of the month to start to make good the damage of the summer. Scarify (rake out the old dead grass and moss) by hand (hard work!) or with a machine, spike to improve drainage again either by hand with a garden fork or with a machine, add a top dressing of soil/sand/ compost mixed according to your soil type
LOCAL ANSWER (ask for advice at your local garden centre if you are unsure) and feed with autumn lawn feed. This low-nitrogen feed strengthens grass in preparation for winter; do not use spring lawn feed as this encourages grass to grow and it may not survive the cold. After all this your lawn will look dreadful, but fear not, it will benefit enormously from the regime. Repair bumps, hollows, bald patches and broken edges too.

New lawns - now is the time to start making a new lawn. Good preparation is vital whether you are laying turf or sowing seed: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic matter and fertiliser, rake smooth, firm by walking up and down and rake again at right angles, repeating the raking and firming process until the area is flat and the surface is a fine crumb texture. Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks.

The key to successful planting is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface.
Bulbs September is the prime time for planting spring bulbs; choose plump firm bulbs and plant within a week of buying in a location with good drainage. Add a little bonemeal for a slow-release fertiliser and grit if the soil is heavy. Ensure pots and containers have plenty of crocks at the bottom. Bury bulbs at twice the depth of their size, tip upwards and ensure there are no air pockets around them. Use them to fill gaps in beds and borders, in formal gardens, in pots and containers, under shrubs and trees or naturalised in grass or woodland.
Spring flowering bedding Plants Buy and plant out violas, wallflowers and primulas now for cheery colour come springtime. Clear old summer bedding, incorporate some organic matter into the soil and plant in drifts for stunning effect. Remember not to grow wallflowers and ornamental cabbages in the same spot two year running; they are brassicas and need rotation to avoid the root disease ‘clubfoot’, which is not only infectious, but persists in the soil.
Start with narcissi, alliums, crocuses, scillas and chionodoxas - tulips should be left until November. For a natural look, throw handfuls of bulbs in the air and plant them where they land.
Pots and containers Plant winter bedding and spring bulbs in your pots and containers now. Stop feeding permanent plants and move any tender plants under cover before the cold sets in.

The last chance to plant indoor bulbs to be in flower (hopefully!) for Christmas is mid September. Use bulb fibre or multi-purpose compost with a little added grit, set the bulbs as close as they can possibly be in a bowl at least 4” deep, preferably with a drainage hole. Narcissi and hyacinths should have their noses just showing - all other bulbs (crocuses, scillas and tulips are good candidates) must be covered completely. Make sure the compost is well below the rim of the bowl and leave in a cool dark place.

Pop Quiz

ne of the worst aspects of pop music quizzes in pubs these days is that most of the questions feature music from the instantly forgettable period between 1990 and now. This month we’ve taken the liberty of redressing the balance and offer you ten questions from the time when music really was music! Enjoy! 1. Frank Sinatra only ever had three number one singles in the UK charts. Name them. (One point for two of them, five points for the earliest.) 2. One of Petula Clark’s 2 number one hit singles was ‘This is my song.’ Which iconic comic actor wrote it and what was her other number one single? (1 point each.) 3. One of the sixty’s first ‘Supergroups’ was ‘Cream.’ Name the three members. (1 point each) 4. Five different versions of ‘Yesterday’ – officially the song that has been recorded by more acts than any other – have appeared in the British charts. Name three of the artists who had the hits. (1 point each) 5. The song ‘Elusive Butterfly was a simultaneous hit for two different people who both reached number five in 1966. Who were they? (1 point each) 6. Name the lead singer of the Hollies. 7. Which song holds the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one (16)? 8. Which male musician featured in the two top selling duos ‘Yazoo’ and ‘Erasure’ and also name his partners in each duo. (1 point for each correct answer) 9. In 1977 Maria Mendiola and Mayte Matios became the first female duo to reach number one with the song ‘Yes, sir, I can Boogie. What did they call themselves? 10. Which one-hit wonder reached number one with the fantastic ‘Seasons in the sun’ that was later a hit for Westlife?

Simply can’t beat Mackerel!
Rich, oily, healthy & fantastic value
M
y son has recently formed a jet-ski club based at Seaham’s wonderful new marina and has used the excellent facilities to begin a fishing career from the back of his jet-ski. The results have been tremendous and because at this time of the year Mackerel are both plentiful and healthy his new-found hobby has resulted in me filling my freezer with these superbly nutritious and extremely tasty fish. I’ve also been checking out the local supermarket fish counters and if you don’t have the availability I’m pleased to enjoy they still represent a very economical buy. Try this great way to cook them!
Pan-fried mackerel with potatoes and beetroot.
Ingredients : 400g potatoes, cut into chunks : 300g baby beetroot, halved : 3 tbsp olive oil : 4 fresh mackerel, filleted or 8 mackerel fillets : Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional) : Zest and juice of 1 lemon : 2 tbsp crème fraîche : A handful of fresh chives, snipped. Method : Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Place the potatoes and beetroot in a roasting tin with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and roast in the oven for 40 minutes. When they have been cooking for 20 minutes, prepare the mackerel. Slash along the skin side of the fillets and season with salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan with the lemon zest and fry the fish over a high heat for 2-3 minutes on each side until the skin is crisp. Put the potatoes and beetroot in a bowl and stir in the lemon juice, crème fraîche and chives. Season and serve with the mackerel.
Other mackerel tips
Fresh mackerel has a texture and flavour similar to sea bass, but is much cheaper to buy. Try roasting slashed whole fresh mackerel in a hot oven for 10-15 minutes until it is just cooked through and serve with cherry tomatoes, fresh rosemary sprigs, lemon wedges and a drizzle of olive oil and serve with salad and buttered potatoes. It makes a really tasty, healthy and colourful midweek supper dish. PAGE 24 | Local Answer - Issue 42

Not The Start We Wanted - More The One We Expected!
D
espite having an unprecedented number of different players scoring goals last season the overall total still left a lot to be desired and that was the main reason for the startling decline after Christmas. Shedding the likes of McDonald, Miller and Zemmama from the wage bill therefore made good sense because they had all become something of a liability. The big problem, of course, was the idea of replacing them with players capable of scoring a hatful of goals with virtually no money to spend. Since every club on the planet has an identical ambition the hope that we could bring in a twenty goals a season man for virtually nothing was extremely optimistic. The arrival of the excellent Albert Adomah has given us exciting wing options, of course, but how can that possibly help if Tony Mowbray continues to play three defensive midfielders and a lone striker? With the amount of possession we enjoyed against Blackpool there should have been much more threat than there was and whichever side of the fence you sit regarding Marvin Emnes it was only with his introduction that we made any kind of impression on the Blackpool goal. By then we were chasing the game and regardless of how fortunate the Blackpool goal may have been, if we’d shown any kind of ability up front to go with all our possession it shouldn’t have mattered by then. PAGE 28 | Local Answer - Issue 42
It has been pretty obvious over the past couple of weeks that Tony Mowbray has his sights firmly set on Leeds’ striker Ross McCormack but surely it’s been left far too late for a deal to be accomplished. Had we made the bids during the close season there might have been more of a chance, but he has already scored two important goals for Leeds so trying to prise him away for a relatively small sum looks almost impossible. The other option is possibly more likeley because Swedish club Malmo would probably look on a decent bid for Tokelo Rantie with a bit more interest. The fact they are holding out at the moment, however, would suggest that there hasn’t been a ‘decent’ bid so far. In the case of Rantie, of course, it’s difficult to know whether he would be able to make the transition to the Championship anyway, so he must represent a bit of a risk. It’s all very difficult and I for one don’t envy either Tony Mowbray or Steve Gibson in their search for reinforcements. That they are needed is pretty obvious, but as Tony Mowbray has always been quick to point out, buying for the sake of it is worse than not buying at all. In the meantime we have had one great result at Charlton, a very good first half against Leicester, a joke result against Accrington and a draw against Blackpool that could have been much more. It could have been worse!
