On The Box 'Big School' - a little school with some big laughs!

W

hen BBC create a new sitcom you must always sit up and take notice because over the years they have come up with the absolute all time stars of the sitcom genre. 'Only Fools,' 'Dad's Army,' 'Porridge,' 'Steptoe & Son,' 'Blackadder,' 'As Time Goes By,' 'Ever Decreasing Circles,' 'Fawlty Towers'- the list of greats goes on and on. Their very latest offering is 'Big School,' partly written by the show's main star David Walliams and starring him and the excellent Catherine Tate.

school but in this case is something of a contradiction. With only five other teachers featured - and that includes the headmistress who is beautifully played by Frances de la Tour - it would suggest it's not a very big school at all. The headmistress is worth watching, though, because she's a wonderfully dark character who constantly humiliates her staff and professes high standards for the school whilst indulging a predilection for smoking and drinking confiscated alcohol in her office.

The series follows Walliam's character Mr Church, a socially inept Chemistry teacher at Greybridge School who falls for Tate's character new French teacher Miss Postern whose claim to fame is that although she teaches French she's never actually been to France! She considers herself in tune with modern youth and a woman who attracts attention from most men and 'at least one female member of staff.' That one of the men is the rather gross sports teacher Mr Gunn (perfectly played by Philip Glenister) is not particularly welcomed. It has to be said, though, that she does look extremely attractive considering how believably she played the vindictive and ugly old old gran in the wonderful Catherine Tate Show.

Other teachers featured include depressive Geography teacher Mr. Barber and Music teacher Mr Martin played by Daniel Rigby. If you watch the show and wonder where you've seen him before, he's the likeable nerd in the recent TV adverts for BT Broadband . Add Mrs Klebb, the Drama teacher and the elderly head of Science Mr Bubble , and that would seem to be the staff.

The title 'Big School' obviously refers to the description usually applied to senior PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 43

But with some very funny lines and endearing characters this is a sitcom that will grow in popularity despite being old fashioned enough to let us remember 'Please Sir' and 'Grange Hill. Perhaps the most important aspect of it, though, is that it is a genuine situation comedy to which we can all relate. I already love it and sincerely hope there's another series very soon.

Every man's dream tech!

M

en, we love our gadgets and our technology and the saying that we don’t grow, our toys just get bigger is often a true statement. We found this wonderful little poem amusing and it sums up quite succinctly how every man quietly feels. We love it!

I have a little satnav I have a little Satnav, it sits there in my car a Satnav is a driver's friend and tells you where you are. I have a little Satnav, I've had it all my life It's better than the normal ones, 'cos this one is my wife It gives me full instructions, especially how to drive "It's thirty miles an hour," it says "you're doing thirty five!" It tells me when to stop and start and when to use the brake and tells me that it's never ever safe to overtake. It tells me when a light is red and when it goes to green it seems to know instinctively just when to intervene. It lists the vehicles just in front and all those to the rear and taking this into account it specifies my gear. I'm sure no other driver has so helpful a device for when we leave and lock the car it still gives its advice. It fills me up with counselling, each journey's pretty fraught so why don't I exchange it and get a quieter sort? Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, makes sure I'm properly fed, it washes all my shirts and things and keeps me warm in bed! But despite these big advantages at which you cannot scoff, I do dream that - just now and then - I could turn the bugger off. PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 43

Car review

The New Honda Civic A Much Improved Design!

D

espite its obvious popularity the previous model of the Honda Civic nevertheless had its critics. With its new version Honda seems to have taken note of those criticisms and many of the small niggles have been addressed to give considerable improvement. New front and rear styling makes it look better all round and the new styling has also helped the car's fuel efficiency and aerodynamics with wind noise now almost inaudible. The short, sharp-curved front and unique split rear window of the old car are still in place, as is the undeniably hi-tech interior, but overall it looks superb. Honda itself claims that this is a more 'youthful and emotional design' but that sounds like a copy writer's hype rather than a genuine observation! The car comes in six specifications – entry-level SE, automatic SE-T, ES, ES-T, EX and top-of-the-range EX GT - with a choice of four engines, two diesel and two petrol. It is also available as a five-door hatchback only. Previous criticisms included a tendency towards a slightly uncomfortable ride but thanks to a new fluid-filled rear suspension

PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 43

the new car's ability to absorb potholes and bumps is much better. With most people economy is one of the main points and the entry-level 1.4-litre provides that with 52.3mpg and emissions of 129g/km of CO2. The 1.6-litre diesel, however, delivers tax-free emissions of 94g/km, returns 78.5 mpg in fuel economy and still maintains excellent performance so is probably a better bet despite the extra cost of diesel. The six-speed manual gearbox comes equipped as standard across the entire range but only the 1.8-litre petrol model offers a five-speed automatic gearbox. One excellent addition to the new car is a stop-start feature on models fitted

with a manual gearbox. This innovation stops the engine when the car is stationary, further

LOCAL ANSWER boosting fuel efficiency and dropping the car's CO2 emissions Internally, the new design provides visibility and plenty of support to keep you in your seat. The back is relatively roomy, with just enough leg and shoulder room, but the steeply sloped roof does make life a little difficult for very tall passengers, Honda has also replaced the previously complicated dashboard with a much more practical and easier to follow lay out that still retains a quite dramatic look. One of Honda's main attributes in the past has always been its ability to use space well. The new car is no exception with already generous dimensions supplemented well by clever use of space. Putting the fuel tank underneath the interior floor in the middle of the car and making the rear suspension compact and entirely tucked away, for instance, has created 487 litres of boot space when the rear seats are in place. That represents a significant 171 litres more than the Ford Focus. Fold down the back seat and that expands to a generous 1,210 litres. The rear seat is brilliant because it not only folds down as normal but also comes with cinema style flip-up bases that allow bags to be stored behind the front seats. One disturbing feature, however, is that while the boot has two levels inside it doesn’t have room for a spare tyre.

great value for money with standard equipment including LED daytime running lights, alloy wheels, stop-start technology, air-conditioning and an MP3 compatible stereo. The higher-spec cars include things like automatic headlights, climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and sat-nav. There is also an ECON mode that adjusts the response of the accelerator and other settings at the push of a button to make the car more fuelefficient.

The final benefit is that Hondas have always tended to have a strong resale value so that could lead to even more savings in the future. A really nice car!

enim features strongly in the Autumn The material that combines one of the most iconic fashion looks for the past sixty years with the hardest wearing clothing you will ever own has been denim, with a variety of styles and uses also propelling it into the ranks of one of the most used materials. This Autumn’s new M&S range features a number of opportunities to pour yourselves into some great styles that include straight leg, slimboot, jeggings, skinnies and boyfriend -all designed to fit and flatter everyone. Many of the new styles also feature Sculp & Lift technology with a premium stretch innovation that will also ensure your jeans will hold their shape. X-Fit offers a complete stretch where you need it and there’s also Stay Dark technology, which helps the finish stay truer for longer. There’s a great saying that every wardrobe should feature denim in it somewhere. Well here’s your chance! Tartan Check, plaid, tartan - call it whatever you please, it is very much in this Autumn. Make sure you invest in it this season. Camo From traditional bright green and olive tones to de-constructed interpretations on the print, camo has officially travelled from the runway to the high street. Motif jumpers One of the (seemingly few!) winter highlights is layering up in a winter jumper, but this season they’ve got a whole lot cuter. Plump for cute motifs such as a cat or cutesy prints to take the chill out of that fresh Winter air. PAGE 14 | Local Answer - Issue 43

In The Garden

October Gardening Tips

A

utumn is now here and a lot of our gardens will be dying off and “going to sleep” until next spring. Even though the garden is “going to sleep” this doesn’t mean there is nothing to do, there is plenty to be on with in the garden. Clean out the greenhouse It really is worth cleaning out your greenhouse thoroughly now your greenhouse crops are over; it will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring! Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the Winter and scrub all benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For effective fumigation, move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be pest free! Start your compost If you haven’t already done so, start your compost going by buying a bin or building a partially enclosed area for a heap. It is vital to replace the goodness in soil after PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 43

a hefty growing season and Autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground for next spring. Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, weeds (but not the roots unless they have been through a shredder), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal.

Turn once a week or so if you can and NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material (such as diseased rose petals - heinous culprits) to your compost - it is a warm and welcoming nirvana for unwelcome guests who will reappear with a vengeance next year! Onto the bonfire with them without a qualm...

LOCAL ANSWER Tidy borders Keep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but do try to resist the temptation of a thorough spring clean. Leave seedheads for the birds if you don’t want to collect them and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the Winter shelter. Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), however diseased material is another matter; make it a priority to clear and burn it to prevent pests and diseases overwintering courtesy of your kind hospitality! Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost. Rake fallen leaves Don’t waste fallen leaves (except those perilous rose leaves and evergreens, which take too long to rot down) - given time they decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake up fallen leaves and chuck them into a simple frame to make leaf mould (black bin liners spiked with air holes will also do if you can bear the visual offense - but remember to dampen the leaves first). If left to linger on the lawn for long, the grass will turn yellow. Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat. Prepare your soil for next year Your soil is your most precious commodity, so start digging in compost, manure and as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better, especially if your soil is heavy. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the Winter when the elements will break the clods down, making Spring planting infinitely easier! Planting With the ideal planting conditions of Autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit

In The Garden bushes, perennials and bulbs. Even in damp conditions it is worth checking the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting - heavy rain will not necessarily penetrate a rootball that has been allowed to dry out, so if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water before planting. Birds Our feathered friends will be starting to build their reserves for Winter, so do please put out food and fresh water for them. We sell a range of top quality bird food and feeding stations as well as some really beautiful bird tables. They make great Christmas presents - for little ones the magic of watching birds coming to feed close by is a pleasure to behold! A plentiful supply of clean water is essential for drinking and bathing; melt ice on frosty mornings with warm water, ensure the inside of your bird bath remains roughened and do remember to change the water regularly.

Lawns Rule one - keep off when sodden! Established lawns - whilst the grass is still growing keep mowing once a fortnight with the blades on high for the final few cuts. If you haven’t had time, carry out your Autumn lawn care programme - scarify (rake out the old dead grass and moss) by hand (hard work!) or with a machine, spike to improve drainage again either by hand with a garden fork or with a machine, add a top dressing of soil/ PAGE 18 | Local Answer - Issue 43

sand/compost mixed according to your soil type (ask for advice at your garden centre) and feed with autumn weed and moss killer. This low-nitrogen preparation strengthens grass for Winter; do not use Spring lawn feed as this encourages grass to grow and it may not survive the cold. After all this your lawn will look dreadful, but fear not, it will benefit enormously from the regime. Repair bumps, hollows, bald patches and broken edges too. New lawns - October is the last chance for sowing grass seed and just about the best time for laying turf. Good preparation is vital for either: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic matter and fertiliser, rake smooth, firm by walking up and down and rake again at right angles, repeating the raking and firming process until the area is flat and the surface is a fine crumb texture. Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line. Butt the turves together as tightly as you can and fill any gaps with sieved soil. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks. Bulbs Finish planting spring bulbs such as narcissi and crocuses - tulips can wait until November. Choose plump firm bulbs and plant within a week of buying in a location with good drainage. Add grit if the soil is heavy and ensure pots and containers have plenty of crocks at the bottom. Bury bulbs at three times their own depth, tip upwards and ensure there are no air pockets around them. Use them to fill gaps in beds and borders, in formal gardens, in pots and containers, under shrubs and trees or naturalised in grass or woodland. For a natural look, throw handfuls of bulbs in the air and plant them where they land.

W

e know that some people find Irish jokes somewhat racist but since they use the same jokes and say it was an Englishman that said it we can be forgiven for finding them amusing. Enjoy!

A bloke at a horse race whispers to Paddy next to him, "Do you want the winner of the next race?" Paddy replies "No tanks, I've only got a small garden." Paddy and Mick found 3 hand grenades and decided to take them to the police station. Mick says "What if one explodes before we get there?" Paddy says: "We'll lie and say we only found two!"

"Oh, no, Paddy, what ya doing?" Paddy says, "Well me and Mary haven't been getting on in the bedroom lately & the therapist recommended I do something sexy to a tractor." The Irish have solved their own fuel problems. They imported 50 million tonnes of sand from the Arabs and they're going to drill for their own oil.

A coach load of Irishmen on a mystery tour decided to run a sweepstake to guess where they were going. The driver won ÂŁ52.

Paddy says to Mick, "Christmas is on a Friday this year." Mick says, "Let's hope it's not the 13th."

Paddy's racing snail is not winning races anymore so he decided to take its shell off to reduce its weight and make him more aerodynamic. It didn't work, if anything it made him more sluggish.

Paddy's in the bathroom and Murphy shouts to him. "Did you find the shampoo?" Paddy says, "Yes but it's for dry hair and I've just wet mine."

Paddy finds a sandwich with two wires sticking out of it. He phones the police and says "Bejaysus I've just found a sandwich dat looks like a bomb." The operator asks, "Is it tickin? Paddy says "No I tink it's beef." Mick walks into Paddy's barn and catches him dancing naked in front of a tractor. Mick says, PAGE 22 | Local Answer - Issue 43

And, FINALLY, my favourite... It was an Irish wake and the house was packed with well wishers all enjoying a drink or two. When the coffin arrived the widow was worried there wouldn't be anywhere to put it so she shouted to the revellers 'Can I have three chairs for the coffin.' Someone at the back shouted 'Hip Hip!'

Time For Some Comfort Food!

O

nce we reach October and the dark nights and cold weather begin to bite, there is nothing nicer than hot, filling comfort food. At this time of year leeks are plentiful, fresh and cheap and this gorgeous little recipe will make the most of their availability.

POTATO AND LEEK LAYERS IN CREAMY SAUCE. Ingredients : 50g butter, plus extra for greasing ; 300g (about 2) leeks, thinly sliced ; 3 garlic cloves, crushed ; 4 sprigs of fresh thyme, leaves picked and roughly chopped ; 1kg potatoes, sliced 0.5cm thick ; 350ml single cream. Method. Preheat the oven to 180째C/fan160째C/gas 4. Melt the butter in a pan, then add the leeks, garlic and most of the thyme. Cover with a disc of baking paper cut to the size of the pan, then put the lid on and cook over a low heat for 5 minutes until just soft. Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a pot of boiling water for 3 minutes, then drain. Lightly butter a large (about 1.6 litre) gratin dish, then add a layer of overlapping potato slices. Season the potatoes and cover with the leeks and all the juices, then add the final layer of potato slices and season again. Pour over the cream and bake in the oven for 50-60 minutes or until bubbling and golden brown on top. Serve scattered with the remaining thyme. If even more flavour is required you could also sprinkle some grated cheddar on the top before cooking to create a lovely crispy crust. If you make more than you need you can freeze it by allowing it to cool, wrap it tightly in cling film, then foil. Freeze for up to 6 months then cook from frozen in a preheated oven for 30 minutes or until piping hot. Delicious!

‘The Soccer Gods Are Playing Against Us!’

W

ith just one win in the first eight league games 'Boro fans could be forgiven for thinking that the season is already over and mid table mediocrity would be a decent result. In my usual optimistic way, however, I've tried to reflect Tony Mowbray's own vision that things aren't quite as bad as they look and that it's only a matter of time before the corner is turned and we start bouncing up the table. Perhaps Kai Kamara's interview after the Bournmouth game was an indicator of the way the team is thinking and his assertion that 'The soccer Gods are playing against us' could be very true indeed. Having led by two goals at Nottingham Forest we conceded two but had a stone wall penalty decision turned down that could conceivably have won the game in the dying seconds. In the Bournmouth game itself, Frazer Richardson's hand ball that gave them the second penalty was far from intentional and having had little to do all afternoon Jonathan Woodgate's own goal was a desperate blow. Kamara should be one of the main reasons for being reasonably optimistic. He has started superbly with two good goals in performances that are proving a real handful to defences. And his obvious dominance in the air is going to provide a great target for the two wide men to aim for in forthcoming weeks. One thing that should prove interesting over the next few games, however, will be how results go while Rhys Williams is suspended. His challenge for a straight red was hardly what you want to see from your captain, but It's interesting to note that the awful run in the second half of last season began when he returned to the team after his injury. It may well be pure coincidence because he obviously has some great qualities but it remains to be seen whether we are actually a better team without him. The twelve goals scored so far is only matched by a few other teams. Leaders QPR, in fact, have only scored eight. The big difference is that while they have only conceded twice we have let in fourteen. It's therefore the defence that must be to blame so a change in the middle of it while Williams is suspended will at least show whether he might be partially to blame. But - as we always say - it's a long season and three or four wins in a row could make an enormous difference. The big disappointment is that home games against teams like Sheffield Wednesday and Bournmouth should have been stonewall home wins and weren't, yet performances at top teams Wigan and Nottingham Forest could easily have been away wins. It's the luck factor again and if that changes a little over the next few weeks I might well be writing a totally different column next month. Let's hope so! PAGE 28 | Local Answer - Issue 43
