'Strictly' Again Proving Its Popularity.
P
erhaps the least surprising aspect of the launch of another series of 'Strictly Come Dancing' is its immediate effect on viewing figures, relegating ITV's supposedly rival series 'X Factor' to a very poor second best. I say least surprising because even though not everyone on the series is an immediately recognisable 'celebrity' there are some very interesting people who are fascinating viewers with an ability that defies some of the shapes on view. A couple of my favourite entertainers are both in this category with the wonderful Mark Benton (Northern Lights and much more ) and the darker of the two hairy bikers Dave Myers trying their best to look like Fred Astaire without being anywhere near. Most people think Benton is a Geordie after his part in Northern Lights but he's actually a local boy born in Guisborough. His performance in the fourth show where he danced an entertaining pop tribute in gold shirt, hip hop garb and harem pants for an MC Hammer themed Cha Cha was a huge improvement and he obviously thoroughly enjoyed it. As did we!. He's never going to win it but at least we still have local interest. There are, of course, some real naturals on show with the likes of Abbey Clancey (Mrs Peter Crouch), Natalie Gumede (Kirsty
PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 44
Soames in Coronation Street), England rugby superstar Ben Cohen, Susanna Reid (BBC Breakfast) and multi platinum selling songstress Sophie Ellis Bextor coming into this category. On the other side of the fence three of the absolute no-hopers in Tony Jacklin, Julien Macdonald and Vanessa Phelps have already gone. As usual, there are story lines that the tabloids scream from the rooftops with the main one so far featuring the early favourite for the title Natalie Gumede. Natalie, who performs with Artem Chigvinstev has topped the leader board twice already but caught the headlines due to her previous training, which many believe gives her an unfair advantage. Shortly after signing up for the show it emerged Miss Gumede was listed as A ‘highly skilled’ dancer on her agency CV and worked professionally in the industry until she suffered an injury aged 19. The immediate reaction to the story should really be 'so what?' She suffered with a 'compressed disc and sciatica' after been struck down in pain during training but despite being doubtful for the fourth show she recovered and again performed superbly. By the time you read this I'm pretty sure that the unbelievably stiff Fiona Fullerton will also have gone. If not she's been very fortunate!

Humour The Oldest War In The World Is Between Men And Women!
It doesn't matter which side you're on. There'll be something here that's familiar!
When I came home from golf today the wife had left a note on the fridge: "It's not working, I can't take it anymore! Gone to stay with my Mother." I opened the fridge, the light came on, and the beer was cold...what the hell is she talking about??? The mother-in-law arrives home from the shops to find her son-in-law Paddy in a steaming rage and hurriedly packing his suitcase. "What happened Paddy ?" she asks anxiously. "What happened!! I'll tell you what happened. I sent an email to my wife telling her I was coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home... and guess what I found ? Yes, your daughter, my wife Jean, naked with Joe Murphy in our marital bed! This is unforgivable, the end of our marriage. I'm done. I'm leaving forever!" "Ah now, calm down, calm down Paddy!" says his motherin-law. "There is something very odd going on here. Jean would never do such a thing! There must be a simple explanation. I'll go speak to her immediately and find out what happened." Moments later, the mother-in-law comes back with a big smile. "Paddy. I told you there must be a simple explanation .....she never got your E-mail!" The bride was escorted down the aisle. When she reached the altar, the groom was standing there with his golf bag and clubs at his side. She said: "What are your golf clubs doing here?" He looked her right in the eye and said, "This isn't going to take all day, is it?" PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 44
In the beginning, God created the earth and rested. Then God created Man and rested. Then God created Woman. Since then, neither God nor Man has rested. If you're one of those men who think that a woman's place is in the kitchen, never forget that that's where the knives are kept! A man asks, “God, why did you make woman so beautiful?” God responded, ”So you would love her.” The man asks, “But God, why did you make her so stupid?” God replied, “So she would love you.” Everyone says the world would be better off if it was run by women. Sure, maybe there wouldn't be violence and territorial conquests fuelled by male testosterone. Instead, we'd have a bunch of jealous countries that aren't talking to each other. An investigative journalist went to Afghanistan to study the culture and was shocked to discover that women were made to walk ten paces behind the men. She asked her guide why and he said, "Because they are considered of lesser status." Outraged the journalist went home. A year later she returned covering violence in the region and was surprised to see the women walking ten paces ahead. She turned to her guide and this time asked, "What has changed?" The guide answered, "Land mines." When a man opens the car door for his wife it's almost certain that either the car or the wife is brand new.

Car review
The Lexus IS A Great Combination Of Luxury, Reliability And Economy.
C
ombining the ultimate in luxury with tremendous reliability and dealer service, the Lexus range is considered one of the more up-market brands with which to be associated and one of its most recent models is a testament to that. The Lexus IS 2013 is a competitor for the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, but with a choice of hybrid and petrol engines it offers a completely different approach. So while there are no diesel engines available for the IS, it is available with either a 2.5-litre V6 petrol or a 2.5-litre hybrid petrol engine. The 2.5-litre hybrid in the Lexus IS 300h is claimed to return 65.7mpg and 99g/km in emissions. This economy figure isn’t quite as good as the BMW 3 Series’ 68.9mpg but does match the Audi A4 - and Lexus says the IS 300h is £1,000 cheaper to run per year in the first three years than the Audi.
buyers aren't too worried about economy, this particular car offers the lowest emissions in its class, with 99g/km putting it into the free road tax category. Fuel economy is also exceptional so it's a combination that should make the Lexus IS attractive to company car buyers. New styling has updated the car for 2013, making it look sportier and more

LOCAL ANSWER than its previous model because of improved steering and suspension. This provides really good grip and makes it feel very stable on cornering. Engine-wise, it's not as responsive as some of its rivals but as the car is very much in the 'family' bracket the overall comfort it offers is much more important. For those who like to feel as if they're driving a sports car, however, there's a dial that controls the volume of engine noise that comes into the car but the noise is faked by the sound system and could be defined as an additional unwanted noise. When it's turned off, though, it's still very much a quiet and sensible Lexus at heart. Going back to the overall comfort, this really is a lovely car to drive either in traffic or on the motorway. All models - including the entry level SE - get alloy wheels, cruise control, climate control, Bluetooth, digital radio and automatic headlights. A powerful 15-speaker stereo is standard on the top of the line Premier models and optional on the Lexus IS F Sport and Luxury specifications. Also standard on the Premier models are electric leather seats, a 7-inch sat-nav display and a rear-view camera. There's more rear legroom in all models as well, so rear seat passengers are guaranteed a comfortable ride.
to change when servicing, keeping bills low. The battery, meanwhile, has been designed to last for the length of the car's lifetime. The car is very safe, too, scoring the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety test and scoring particularly high for adult occupants. Storage space is also good, though the boot is a little smaller than that of a BMW 3 Series. Folding rear seats, however, means there is still plenty of space for additional luggage. Overall, it's a great car and offers a wonderful combination of economy and true luxury. It's well worth a look!
Lexus finished first in the Auto Express Driver Power survey in 2013, and the IS enjoys being part of the company's reputation for reliability and build quality. The hybrid engine in the 300h model means that there are fewer parts

Snoring...
...does you do or does you don’t?
S
noring is the coarse sound a person can make whilst asleep. The noise is caused by vibration of the soft palate and other soft tissues of the upper airway during the passage of air in, and out. The turbulence is caused due to restriction of the lax tissues in the throat. Whilst awake these tissues exhibit muscle tone and the airway is more patent, thus we do not snore whilst awake. Snoring can originate from the nose, oropharynx or base of the tongue. Research has shown that the backward ‘lol’ (no not that text speak!) of the tongue is more important in snoring than was first thought.
jaw and attached tissues (tongue etc) forward thus helping to prevent or stop the snoring sounds. Dentally prescribed devices such as Sleepwell (S4S) and Somnowell are proven devices to alleviate snoring. There is no ‘cure’ but reduction in sounds can be dramatic.
Snorers may be susceptible to the potentially life threatening OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNOEA ( stopping breathing whilst asleep). It is important that you are screened by your Dentist or Health Care professional to eliminate this possible complication; as provision of an anti snoring device alone, may just serve to mask this serious condition. November Gardening Tips
N
ow that its winter, the plants in your borders will be dying back. Its time to start tiding those boarders. Soggy, brown, collapsed plants are an eyesore and deserve nothing better than cutting back and a decent burial on the compost heap. Cut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example). They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.
treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.
Drain and lag
Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.
Rake fallen leaves
Fallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled PAGE 16 | Local Answer - Issue 44
Prepare your soil for next year
For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard
LOCAL ANSWER - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.

Clean out the greenhouse
If you didn’t do this last month then clear out the greenhouse ready for next year. Wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. If you have suffered with a pest problem this year in your green house, then consider fumigation of your green house.
Move tender plants into the greenhouse
Heavy frosts may well be on the agenda this month. Either move tender plants inside or keep a supply of fleece, bubble wrap or similar to protect them from freezing conditions - this is especially important for recently planted hardy annuals.

In The Garden looks likely try and lag pots and containers as even if the plant is hardy, root systems above ground may not survive.
Bulbs
Plant tulip bulbs now, the cooler soil helps avoid the fungal disease ‘tulip fire’. Plant plump firm bulbs in containers or in a sunny spot at 2 - 3 times their own depth and double their width apart. Use them to fill gaps in beds and borders, in formal gardens, in pots and containers, under shrubs and trees or naturalised in grass or woodland. If you are planting them in borders, groups of 10 - 25 between perennials give the best effect.
Bedding Plants
Brighten your borders, hanging baskets and containers with winter bedding such as pansies, violas, primroses and cyclamen.

Perennials
Divide hearty perennials such as daylilies, Michaelmas daisies and golden rod. Cut them down to 4, dig them up and divide carefully. If your soil is heavy clay, leave this job until springtime. All other perennials are also best left until the spring, especially peonies which dislike being split in cold weather and grasses. Cut back ornamental grasses and bamboos; if the latter are thick enough, the canes can be used as supports next season. Less hardy perennials - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias more than a third - the dead stems should afford some protection for the crowns in severe weather. In colder areas, mulch with composted bark or something similar and leave cutting them back fully until they begin to shoot from the base in spring.

Don't Waste The Bonfire - Create A Delicacy That Even Guy Fawkes Would Love!
W
hile we are obviously aware that the main items on the November 5th agenda are the bonfire and the fireworks we are also aware that no Bonfire Night party could ever be a success without delicious - but traditional - Guy Fawkes food.
Having said that we also recognise that nobody wants to be stuck with the cooking while all those fizzes and bangs are going on outside so we've come up with the perfect way to enjoy the night with an easy but satisfying dish that can feed as many as you like so long as you multiply the ingredients appropriately. This recipe serves four, so if you want to serve eight just double it .... and so on. Our choice is with tasty and filling sausages because they make a satisfying supper that this can be cooked in advance in one pot. Ingredients 1. 8 good-quality pork and herb sausages, cut into chunky pieces 2. 350g jar of pasta sauce (available at any supermarket. .We prefer a smoky bacon taste but that's up to you!) 3. 2 ripe tomatoes, quartered 4. 410g can cannellini beans, drained 5. Handful chopped fresh curly parsley Method 1. Heat a large, wide frying pan over a high heat. When hot, add the sausages and cook for 5 minutes, stirring, until evenly browned. 2. Reduce the heat slightly and add the pasta sauce. Half-fill the jar with water, rinse out into the pan and simmer for 5 minutes. 3. Stir in the tomatoes and cannellini beans and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Season to taste and stir through the parsley. Keep to one side until the fireworks are over. Even though the recipe includes pasta, most people's preference on bonfire night is to include roast potatoes done on the bonfire and they can obviously be combined with the original recipe. There is simply no better way to cook them than on the bonfire itself (once the main flames have gone and you're left with hot charcoal.)Wash the potatoes, smear them with oil then wrap them in foil before gently placing them on the hot remnants of the fire. Turn frequently until fully cooked. Once they are ready, cut them in two, add a knob of butter then pour over the re-heated sausage mixture. Absolutely delicious, totally filling and very warming! Tony Was ‘One Of Us,’ But He Still Had To Go.
T
here's an awful lot to be said for loyalty, but there are times when even that noble concept reaches breaking point. I can't believe there isn't a single 'Boro fan who's not disappointed by the circumstances surrounding Tony Mowbray's departure because here was the perfect scenario - a former hero on the field who would now become the Saviour that would repair all the damage that the Ginger Scotsman did to our beloved club. But much as we all loved Tony Mowbray's huge contribution to our Phoenix-like rise from the ashes of liquidation in 1986 that made him 'one of us,' we have to admit that he has ultimately failed to translate that into his role as 'Boro Manager. Football's statistical evidence shows quite clearly that apart from reducing the wage bill by off-loading a series of players who simply weren't good enough anyway he has failed to replace them with a squad that is coherent, knows what it's supposed to be doing and that excites the fans. In his own words fairly recently 'this is now my team and I expect them to produce the kind of football the fans want.' Sadly, he has - like both of his immediate predecessors - failed to make any kind of difference to the downward spiral that has been evident since the departure of Steve McLaren. And let's be honest, the majority of 'Boro fans - despite his undisputed claim to be 'Boro's most successful manager ever - were pleased to see the back of him. Recent history shows that both McLaren and 'Boro fans should rue that decision. Perhaps the most ironic aspect of his departure, however, is that there is definitely evidence that some of the players he has brought in have real talent. George Friend, Mustapha Carayol, Albert Odamah, Grant Leadbitter and Kai Kamara have all contributed in part. Sadly, it is not in the individual performances that we have consistently failed. It's been our inability to perform as a cohesive unit that has led to the perilous position in which we now find ourselves. That, unfortunately, is down to the man who is supposed to create that cohesion. And because of that piece of reality it was inevitable that Tony would have to go! The big question now, of course, is who replaces him? The inevitable names are already being bandied around with Tony Pulis (Stoke City long ball enthusiast), Martin O'Neill (failed philosopher and even bigger failure as Mackem Manager), Fabrizio Ravanelli (complete crackpot but wonderful striker), Juninho (another 'Boro legend but with limited experience), Nigel Clough (complete non-achiever) , Graeme Souness (I love me who do you love?) and Gary Megson (biggest failure on the managerial circuit so far.) I have to admit there is only one name that quite excites me as a potential trendsetter. Ole Gunnar Scholskjaer has already shown himself to be a talented manager, having begun the role as Manchester United's reserve team manager. He returned to his native country in 2011 to manage his former club, Molde, who he led to their first ever league title in 2011 and a second league trophy in 2012. A decent CV and while it sounds somewhat different to the others we've mentioned he offers something different and refreshing. He's also a winner. Just a thought, Mr. Gibson!
