YOU’LL NEVER GET THE BETTER OF A YORKSHIREMAN!
T
hese lovely little stories came our way recently and we felt we just had to share them. They all show that you just can’t keep a good Yorkshireman down. A rugby league fan is drinking in a bar in Bradford when he gets a call on his mobile phone. He hangs up, grinning from ear to ear and orders a round of drinks for everybody in the bar because his wife has just given birth to a typical Yorkshire baby boy weighing 25 pounds. Nobody can believe that any new baby can weigh in at 25 pounds, but the rugby fan just shrugs and replies, ‘That’s about average in Yorkshire ... like I said, my boy’s a typical Yorkshire baby boy who’ll grow to be a rugby league player.’ Congratulations came from all around with one woman actually fainting with sympathy pains. Two weeks later, he returns to the bar. The bartender says, “Hey, aren’t you the father of that typical Yorkshire baby that weighed 25 pounds at birth? Everybody’s been making bets about how big he’d be in two weeks. So, how much does he weigh now?’ The proud father answers, ‘Twenty pounds.’ The bartender is puzzled, concerned and a little suspicious. ‘What happened? He already
PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 49
weighed 25 pounds the day he was born!’ The Yorkshireman takes a slow swig of his Samuel Smith’s, wipes his lips on his shirt sleeve, leans into the bartender and proudly says, ‘Had him circumcised...’ A solicitor and an old Yorkshireman are sitting next to each other on a long flight. The solicitor loves general knowledge questions and reckons he can answer just about anything but presumes the old Yorkshireman will be pretty stupid and that he can get one over on him easily. So he asks the old man if he would like to play a fun game. The old man is tired and just wants to take a nap so he politely declines and tries to catch a few winks. The solicitor persists, however, saying that the game is a lot of fun...”I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me only £5.00. Then you ask me one, and if I don’t know the answer, I will pay you £50.00,” he says. This catches the old man’s attention and, to keep the solicitor quiet, he agrees to play the game. The lawyer asks the first question. “What’s the distance from the Earth to the Moon?” The senior doesn’t say a word, but reaches into his pocket, pulls out a five-pound note, and hands it to the lawyer.
LOCAL ANSWER Now, it’s the old man’s turn. He asks the solicitor, “What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?” The solicitor says he’ll need a little time to think about that one so the old man goes back to sleep. The solicitor then uses his laptop to search all references he can find on the Net. He sends E-mails to all the smart friends he knows; all to no avail. After an hour of searching, he finally gives up. He wakes the old man and hands him £50.00 and the old man goes right back to sleep. The lawyer is going mad not knowing the answer so he wakes the old man up and asks, “Well, so what does go up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?” The old man reaches into his pocket, hands the solicitor £5.00, and goes back to sleep. God was bored and went missing for six days. The Archangel Gabriel found him resting on the seventh day and asked him what he’d been up to. “I’ve created the planet Earth,” said God “and it will be a place of great balance. North America will be wealthy and South America will be poor. Over there I’ve placed a continent of white people, and over there a continent of black people. Some countries will be very hot and some will be covered with ice.” Gabriel was impressed and pointed to an area in England and said: “What’s that?” “Ah,” said God. “That is Yorkshire, the most glorious place on Earth. There will be beautiful lakes, streams, rivers and hills, great music, architecture, and sporting giants. The people from Yorkshire will be modest, intelligent and witty. They will be sociable, hard working and high achievers. They will be known throughout the world as diplomats and peacemakers.” Gabriel gasped in admiration, thought for a moment, and said: “But what about balance, God? You said there will be balance.” “Ah,” said God, nodding sagely, “let me tell you about Lancashire...”

In The Garden
April Gardening Tips GARDEN MAINTENANCE
Beware late frosts and keep vulnerable plants and new shoots protected at night if frost is forecast. Don’t be tempted to put out tender bedding until much later on in the month and even then be prepared to cover it if necessary. Deadhead daffodils and narcissi, give them a liquid feed or sprinkling of bonemeal and then let them die down. Don’t cut off the leaves as they are necessary to replenish the bulb for next year. Keep deadheading spring bedding to keep it looking neat and encourage new flowers.
Now the soil is warming up and things are starting to grow, add general purpose fertiliser before covering with mulch especially in borders, the fruit and vegetable patch and containers. If you have already mulched, draw it back (if possible), tease the soil a little, add fertiliser and replace the mulch. Carry on removing moss and weeds from paths, terraces and drives.
Continue with the spring cleaning. Hoe your borders, getting rid of weeds before they take hold - annual weeds such as bitter cress and groundsel are enough of a nightmare without allowing them to go forth and multiply by seeding. If it’s dry, attack ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves. Mulch away while you can still see what you are doing and before the herbaceous growth really takes off. Use your own garden compost or leaf mould, well rotted manure, the contents of out-of-date grow bags or readymade soil conditioner. PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 49
Make new beds and borders - mark the shape with sand trickled from a bottle, remove the top layer of growing vegetation and dig the ground over, incorporating as much organic matter as possible. If you are making a bed in the lawn, remove the turf – if you dig it in
LOCAL ANSWER the buried grass will regrow and regrow and regrow. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

Now is the time to wage war on slugs and snails. They love tulips and delicacies such as the delicious young shoots of delphiniums and the like, so use pet-friendly slug pellets, drench the ground around hostas with liquid slug killer to exterminate slugs below the surface. Keep an eye out for snails and pick them off what you do with them is up to you. Birds are your friends here - flat stones artfully located are useful accessories for birds to practise their snail bashing techniques.
BULBS, FLOWERS AND CONTAINERS
Protect new spring shoots from frosts and slugs... Split clumps of snowdrops by digging them up, gently pulling them apart into bunches of 3 or more bulbs and replanting in dug over soil with some bonemeal incorporated into it. Make sure you work quickly so the bulbs don’t have a chance to dry out and water in if the soil is at all dry. Sprinkle general purpose fertiliser on beds and borders and erect supports for QUALITY, herbaceous AFFORDABLE plants such as peonies, delphiniums and GARDENING oriental poppies that would otherwise SERVICESflop. Car Advice Great Advice for Used Car Buyers
T
his month we’ve decided to veer from the normal new car review to accommodate those people whose attitude to car buying falls into two completely contrasting categories. The first are obviously in the majority because most people’s financial situation means that purchasing a brand new car is purely a distant dream. The second are those who are astute enough to recognise that in many ways buying a brand new car- even though they could probably afford one - can be a bit of a waste of money. And while we in no way want to dissuade the normal new car buyer from continuing his love affair with shiny, bright no-mileage cars we are certainly aware that there are huge financial advantages in looking for a comparatively new, very low mileage used car. Whichever situation you’re in, here are some vital pieces of advice that will hopefully help you make the right decision when the time comes to change your car...
Do you part exchange with your old vehicle or do you look for a good cash price? It’s absolutely true that if you approach a garage with cash and no part exchange much bigger discounts are negotiable so you could save a considerable amount of money. Selling your old car privately may be the problem, however, but as long as it’s in a reasonable condition and you are realistic in the price you ask you are better off doing it that way. Dealing with the ‘we buy anything’ car purchasers could lead to a disappointing outcome because they have to PAGE 12 | Local Answer - Issue 49
make a profit, but it could always be used as a last resort. Diesel or petrol? Consider your annual mileage and work out which is the most economical. Diesels cost more to buy and fuel, but they do more miles to the gallon and cost less to service. Modern diesels are smooth and just as comfortable to drive as petrol models so the choice must be seen as an economic one. Manual or automatic? It’s a personal choice, but automatics are becoming more popular and there are less reasons to buy a manual these days - other than price. However, price doesn’t usually affect the used value to any great extent so the choice is yours. Space. Consider how often you take passengers. It might be less often than you think - so that flash sports car may be fine. If you’ve got kids and a dog, however, an estate might be better than a saloon. In any event, five doors will be better than three - it’s murder lifting a baby from the back of a three door - and child-proof locks make it a completely safe option. Convertible? It’s one thing to enjoy the open road in a two-seater convertible on a warm summer’s day but how appropriate is that particular sporty car in the middle of winter? And while it might look extremely attractive to a prospective date, you’ll struggle if your three mates want a lift to the match. There’s a lot to be
LOCAL ANSWER said for being practical! Towing? If you tow a caravan or trailer, consider an automatic. Also read reviews from appropriate magazines. You will probably need a bigger engine than normal. Can you really afford it? These days you will be offered all kinds of finance deals to persuade you to buy. There are many ways of bringing the monthly payments down to make the car more financially attractive to you, but remember from the outset that the price of the vehicle as shown in the showroom is not necessarily the price you must pay because there are so many variables. Having the cash to pay up front is a huge plus in the negotiations but if you have to take finance the most important factor is not to commit yourself to a bigger monthly outlay than you can really afford. Do your sums! Depreciation. This is how much value the car loses after you buy it and because it’s a hidden cost you don’t notice on a day to day basis that depreciation is often the largest yet least appreciated cost. A new car can depreciate by several thousand pounds just by you driving it out of the showroom and that is where you gain most by buying a low mileage, almost new vehicle. Cars vary as to their depreciation value, however, so when considering any car, always research the expected depreciation . You can do this by looking at the value of older cars of the same (or closest) model and see how used prices compare. Repayment Period. This is the amount of time you take to repay your car loan. Loans are generally repaid monthly and are over a period of one to five years. The longer the repayment period, the lower the monthly payment, of course, but comparing the total cost between the longer and shorter repayment periods could give you quite a shock! That’s why it’s always best to repay a loan over as short a period as you can reasonably afford. Here is an example to help you compare: If you borrow £10,000 over two years at 15% APR, your
monthly repayments will be £484.87 and the total amount you pay back will be £11,636.80. If you borrow the same amount at the same interest rate over 5 years, your monthly repayments will be £237.90 but the total amount you pay back will be £14,273.96. As you can see, there is a considerable difference in the total cost if you take longer to repay the loan. Try to balance how much you can afford each month against how much you will have to pay in the long term and then get the loan paid off as quickly as possible. Insurance and tax groups. All models of car are placed in an insurance group. These groups are 1 - 50. The lower the group your car is placed in, the cheaper it will be to insure. So, group 1 is the cheapest, group 50 is the most expensive. There are many reasons cars are placed in particular groups. Value, power, replacement part costs are all taken into account as well as many other aspects. So check that before you buy. Carbon emissions also affect how much the annual car tax will be so check that out too. The most important thing is not to let your heart rule your head - unless your budget allows it. It’s easy to make a mistake you have to live with for years. Once you’ve done your homework decide on the type of car you want and don’t allow hard talking salesmen to change your mind.

Easter
Easter - When Is It and Why Then?
A
s we gear up for Easter ( the shops have already beaten us to it because they’ve been full of chocolate eggs for weeks), people can be forgiven for wondering exactly what the dates are because they vary every year. To put you straight, Easter this year is from April 18th (Good Friday) to April 21st (Easter Monday). To the Christian church, however, the most important day is Easter Sunday (April 20th) because that was the day of the resurrection and the basis of the entire Christian religion. Easter is what is known as a moveable feast a Christian feast or festival that doesn’t occur on the same date every year. Some feast days - such as Christmas Day or Saint’s Days - are fixed, but Easter is not. So how is the date worked out, and who decides when it is to be? It’s all down to the First Council of Nicea, a council of Christian bishops convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine in 325AD. Nicea was on the site of the modern-day town of Iznik in Turkey and the purpose of the gathering was to make an agreement on several Christian topics, including the date of Easter. The bishops decided that Easter Day (Easter Sunday, the anniversary of Christ’s resurrection) would fall on the first Sunday PAGE 18 | Local Answer - Issue 49
following the paschal full moon - the one immediately after the spring equinox. Part of the thinking behind a flexible date was that Easter must always occur on a Sunday because that was the day of Christ’s Resurrection. The other reason for choosing the paschal full moon was that it’s also the date of Passover in the Jewish calendar when the Last Supper occurred. That makes Easter Day the Sunday after Passover. Since the paschal full moon can be on different days in different time zones, however, that would produce variations on Easter. Realising this, the Church decided that the full moon would always fall on the 14th day of the lunar month. The Church also fixed the spring equinox as March 21st - even though it can occur on March 20, as it will in 2014. And that is how they work out he date of Easter! So, if you’re still awake after all that, you’ve probably learned something. If you’re asleep, however, you probably don’t care! Whichever side of the fence you sit on we hope you have a lovely Easter!

THE APRIL STAR - JERSEY ROYALS (NEW POTATOES)
P
erhaps the most prized of spring and early summer potatoes, Jersey Royals are grown only on the island of Jersey and are available here from April onwards. They do, however, have a short season that only lasts until early June, so April really is the time to make the most of their delicious flavour as early season potatoes are smaller and particularly tender. Waxy rather than floury in texture, Jersey Royals hold their shape well when cooked and have a subtle and delicate taste - ideal for salads. We therefore suggest you make the most of the early season arrivals with this delicious, healthy and fresh way of appreciating this iconic vegetable. Buttered Jersey Royals with Parsley, Mint and Chives Made with the first young Jersey royal potatoes, this is such a lovely way to eat them you could eat a plateful by themselves. If, however, your plate demands meat, then a freshly roasted chicken breast is the ideal accompaniment. Ingredients: 2 lbs of Jersey Royal Potatoes : One full sprig and 2 level tablespooons of fresh chopped mint ; 1 level tablespoon of fresh chopped chives : 40gms butter : sea salt and freshly milled pepper. Method: Wash, but don’t scrape the potatoes as there are a lot of nutrients as well as flavour in the skins. Place the larger ones over the base of the saucepan and pop the smaller ones on top. Pour in enough boiling water to almost cover, add some salt and the sprig of mint. Cover with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer gently for about 20 minutes. Test them with a skewer, and remember they must be tender but still firm: overcooking really does spoil them. Alternatively, the potatoes can be steamed, sprinkling them with salt and tucking the mint in amongst them. Meanwhile, mix the butter and herbs thoroughly with some pepper. Then drain the cooked potatoes, add the herb butter, put the lid back on and swirl the pan around to get each one thoroughly coated. Remove the lid and just savour the delicious aroma for a couple of seconds before you dish them out! Add the chicken if you must, but they really are great all on their own! ENJOY!
