April Gardening THE GREEN THING Tips I overheard a wonderful little conversation taking place at the supermarket checkout the other morning that made me think about the merits of our apparently modern approach to protecting the environment. While politicians and manufacturers make a huge thing about being ‘green’ and protecting the earth for future generations just heed the words of this little old lady and look back at her lifestyle. It should really make us all think! The conversation began when the checkout girl asked the old lady if she’d brought her own bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The old lady apologised for not having her own bags and explained ‘We didn’t have ‘the green thing’ back in my day. Let’s examine that statement a little more closely: in ‘her’ day she returned her beer bottles, pop bottles and milk bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the factory where they were washed, sterilized and re-filled, PAGE 8 | Local Answer - Issue 51
with the same bottles being used over and over again. If that’s not recycling then what is? But they didn’t have ‘the green thing’ back then. In her day she walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300 horsepower machine every time she needed to go more than four hundred yards. She also thought nothing of walking upstairs because there weren’t lifts or escalators in every store and office building. But of course, they didn’t have ‘the green thing’ back then. Back then she washed her baby’s nappies and re-used them for as long as they were needed because they hadn’t invented the throw-away kind. And nappies were dried on the clothes line and blown by the wind to end up fluffy and soft for the baby’s bottom because they didn’t have energy gobbling driers. And once the baby grew out of nappies they were introduced to the clothes their brothers or sisters had grown out of. There was no such thing as ‘designer’

clothes in those days because the money grabbing merchandisers and advertising people hadn’t yet invented the concept. But let’s face it. that old lady was right. They didn’t have ‘the green thing’ back then. In those days she was lucky to have one TV in the living room, not one in every room. And even then they were small - not the size of Cleveland. In the kitchen she stirred and blended everything by hand because there were no electrical gadgets to do the hard work for her.

When she sent presents to loved ones she wrapped the more fragile items in wadded up newspaper because no-one had invented plastic bubble wrap or polystyrene. That also meant the wrapping was easy to dispose of after it had been used. But of course, they didn’t have ‘the green thing’ back then. People took the bus to work and kids walked or rode their bikes to school. Their mothers were at home preparing wholesome meals for their return because they didn’t have 4x4 cars that turned them into a 24 hour taxi service. They had a single electric socket in each room, not a bank of sockets to power a dozen often unnecessary appliances. And they didn’t have a computerised gadget to receive a signal bounced from satellites thousandsQUALITY, of miles out GEORGE’S AFFORDABLE in space in order to find the nearest GARDENING LAWNS SERVICES pizza takeaway. Motoring
Spending too much on petrol? Then try these great fuel economy tips to keep down your motoring costs.
T
here is an obvious lack of cohesion between the overall cost of oil and the price we pay at the pumps which means the cost of petrol is one of the most expensive outlays we face. It’s easy to shrug your shoulders and say there’s little you can do about it but there are a number of ways you can alleviate the problem by exercising proper fuel economy. Believe it or not you can instantly improve your car’s fuel economy by as much as 10% with these great car-care tips. It stands to reason that if you can save on petrol by the way you look after your car you are likely to be driving more safely as well! Try them out and see for yourself. Choose the right car. Clearly, most of us could use less fuel by driving something different but it’s amazing how many people buy something that has both features and power they’ll never really use. It helps to tailor your car to your lifestyle so think about what you’ll use it for, where you’ll drive it and how many miles you’ll do. Then choose a car that does the job but doesn’t have size, performance or features that you’ll hardly ever use. Have your car regularly serviced. Cars are more efficient when they’re firing on all cylinders. Even though modern cars require far less maintenance, it’s important to make sure everything is running smoothly. Ignoring PAGE 14 | Local Answer - Issue 51
the service intervals laid down by the manufacturer is a recipe for trouble, including reduced fuel economy. Keep it well-oiled. We all know that we should check the engine oil in our cars on a regular basis but how many of us actually do it? The oil acts as a buffer between the engine’s mechanical parts so looking after your lubricant helps keep everything running smoothly and efficiently. Be vigilant with tyre pressures. A big part of improving your car’s fuel efficiency is reducing the amount of energy that’s needed to move it along the road. Make the engine’s job easier by correctly inflating its connections with the road. For every 5% (equivalent to around 2 PSI) that a car’s tyres are underinflated, fuel consumption increases by 1%, so check your tyre pressures every month and stick to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Choose the right tyres. There are lots of different tyres out there on the market and most motorists have felt the temptation to simply fit the cheapest. That’s not the way to go if saving fuel is your top priority. Specialist eco-friendly tyres might cost a little more but they’re designed to save you money in the long run. These tyres use special rubber compounds with lower rolling resistance that can lead to fuel savings of up to 5%.
LOCAL ANSWER Choose the right fuel. Some motorists report that using premium or high octane fuel improves their car’s economy but the oil companies are usually careful not to make claims to this effect. Such fuels often contain more advanced detergents which will keep a car’s engine cleaner and this can have efficiency benefits but there are no direct economic gains from choosing a higher octane fuel than the car’s manufacturer recommends. Plan your journey. The car is an important part of our lives that it’s easy to just jump in and drive off without thinking about where we’re going. It always pays to plan your journey in advance. That way you should get there quicker and use less fuel en route. Think about making journeys at times when the roads are quieter. Being in a long queue of traffic and spending twenty minutes in first or second gear can have a disastrous effect on the MPG. Motorway travel is always more fuel efficient than stop-start urban trips but if those trips around town are necessary plan to do everything at once. Turn off the air-con. In-car air-conditioning was once the height of luxury, but nowadays is fairly standard. Contrary to popular belief, we can’t just drive along basking in cool air without paying a penalty in fuel consumption. Air-con and other electrical systems place heavy demands on a car’s battery and it’s the engine that has to do the work of re-charging it. In some circumstances, using the air-con can hit fuel economy by a massive 20%. The message is to use it sparingly. Or open the windows? At low speeds, an open window is preferable to air-con. But the faster you go, the more the aerodynamic effect comes into play. At motorway speeds, the additional drag of having the window open can affect economy and airconditioning systems become more efficient/ Fortunately, living in Britain means that most of the time we don’t have to do either. Lose the roof rack. Car manufacturers spend hours using advanced computer models and wind tunnel technology to make their products as aerodynamic as possible. Then we ruin the effect with enormous roof racks.
While it is more cost effective than buying a bigger car for that family holiday, make sure that when you get home you take it off. Almost anything that disrupts the airflow around your vehicle will harm its aerodynamic performance. Empty the boot. Extra weight in your car puts extra demands on the engine and leads to higher fuel consumption and emissions. It also hampers most aspects of the car’s performance from acceleration to handling and braking. It’s estimated that every 30kg carried in a car reduces fuel economy by 1% so if you’ve been for a game of golf take the clubs out when you get home. Turn off the engine. Lots of modern cars have what’s known as stop-start technology, which automatically shuts off the engine when the car is stationary. If your car doesn’t have this feature, you can still make savings by turning off the ignition yourself. An idling engine burns around 3.5 litres of fuel an hour so all the time we spend stuck in traffic with our engines running, can add up to a lot of fuel burned and a lot of CO2 released without actually going anywhere. You can’t turn off your engine every time you come to a standstill but if the car is going to be motionless for more than around 15 seconds, you’ll probably save fuel by turning it off. Drive smoothly. The key thing to remember when driving to maximise fuel economy is to be smooth with all your inputs towards steering, acceleration and braking should be gentle and progressive. You’re looking to gain speed gently and then maintain it without stressing the engine. Don’t press the accelerator more than you need. Concentrate on keeping your right foot as light as possible or you will be using more petrol without getting any benefit from it. Much of the above, of course, can be considered common sense, yet it’s amazing how few people actually think about them. Adapt the ideas to your motoring, and the combined effect of doing everything properly will most certainly lead to considerable savings in fuel and consequently money.

The month’s latest releases reviewed and looked over! For certain, where Ghost Stories’ warming ambiance and stripped-back melancholy takes centre stage, and often succeeds because of it - moments like Midnight and the gut-wrenching longing for comfort in Another’s Arms, notable examples - there are still sections that don’t feel at all individualistic. Lead guitarist Jonny Buckland underscores his presence (and importance more so) with recognizable panoramic riffs in opener Always In My Head and lead single Magic.
Coldplay - Ghost Stories Parlophone / Atlantic With the recent (and quite public) unveiling of front-man Chris Martin’s break-up with long-time partner - and equally media-grabbing - Gwyneth Paltrow, it was no surprise to find Ghost Stories, Coldplay’s sixth studio album, being seen as the quartet’s break-up record. But this isn’t as linear as the back-story perhaps let’s off. PAGE 18 | Local Answer - Issue 51
Texturally, this is Coldplay’s most gripping record to date; the first since their 2000 debut Parachutes, to go beyond the generic anthem rush of 2011’s Mylo Xyloto. But for every push beyond convention (the percussive sounds of Ink notably), sadly there remain old habits overruling the positives. Chris Martin’s shallow lyricism and choice of words are hard to ignore, and the embarrassment is fulfilled on black-sheep A Sky Full Of Stars: a track sticking out like a sore thumb with its over-indulgent production, its blaring drumbeats and of course, Martin’s predictable pairing of rhymes (I guessed
LOCAL ANSWER
four times correctly what the next word would be; see how well you do). Not all of this album’s criticism though can be placed around one track - a track, admittedly, that isn’t a fault of failed experimentation, but simply that for Coldplay, it’s nothing new. Ghost Stories suffers too from missed opportunities; Oceans’ simplicity, while a welcome nod to their debut, relies too heavily on acoustics and the track’s ping of electronic percussion. In conclusion, Ghost Stories - while not winning any merits for its concept - will entice those who wrote Coldplay off
in previous efforts. An album worth its weight in atmosphere, it’ll eventually stand as intriguing, but little else thereafter.

Gruff Rhys - American Interior Turnstile You’d be forgiven for thinking Gruff Rhys wasn’t taking the job of song-writing, seriously. Candylion? Hotel Shampoo? Yes, they’re the names of his last two solo albums. But American Interior finds the Welshman focus his mix of folk, indie and alternative rock across the pond; a concept on the first Welsh tribe to settle on American soil providing us with some catchy hooks, soothing vocals and an overall feeling of exploration with enjoyment.
8.1/10
Little Dragon - Nabuma Rubberband Seven Four Entertainment / Republic Records The forth album by Swedish quartet Little Dragon is much like its cover; seemingly sweet and innocent, but surrounded by a blur of expansive, pale and quite brooding atmosphere. A contrast to their previous albums which were brimming with colour and positivity. But this shift in tone by no means underscores Little Dragon’s knack for groovy hooks - filled in-between by front-woman Yukimi Nagano’s hypnotic, and register-varied, use of vocals.

an it be true? Could we actually be getting some nice - let alone decent - weather in this jolly reach of the British Isles? June signals the approach of summer, and it’s pleasing to see the sun and warmth most associated with this season, actually deciding to show up this year. So what better way to celebrate this surprising arrival of 20+ degree weather, then with a recipe that encapsulates our love for everything summer. Strawberries are the perfect treat, and whether you plan to spend this summer indoors or out, this offering is guaranteed to be a hit for you sun fanatics out there.
Strawberry Pavlova - Serves 4, prepared in 30 minutes Ingredients: 6 free-range egg whites, 300g Caster Sugar, 1 tsp Sherry Vinegar, 1 drop of Pink Food Colouring, 1 tbsp Orange Liqueur, 250ml Whipping Cream, 1 Vanilla Pod split (seeds only), 75g sifted Icing Sugar, 450g Strawberries (washed, hulled and cut in half ), 100ml Water, additional 100g Caster sugar (for strawberry sauce) & 250g strawberries. Method: Preheat the oven to 180C/360F/Gas Mark 4. Whisk the egg whites in a bowl until stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed. Add the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, whisking constantly, until all the sugar is combined and stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed. Gently fold in the vinegar, pink food colouring and orange liqueur. Divide the meringue mixture into two equal portions. Spread the meringue mixture onto two baking trays lined with baking parchment. Transfer to the oven and turn the oven temperature down to 150C/300F/Gas Mark 2. Bake the meringue for about one hour. The result should be crisp on the outside and chewy in the middle. For the filling, whisk the cream with the vanilla seeds and sugar until stiff peaks are formed when the whisk is removed (you can use the vanilla pod in another dish.) Spoon equal amounts of the cream mixture onto both of the cooked meringues. Place equal amounts of the strawberries on top of the two cream-covered meringues. For the sauce, place the sugar and water into a pan over a medium heat and bring to the boil. Boil for 12-15 minutes, until the liquid becomes a thick syrup. Remove from the heat then add the strawberries and set aside for ten minutes. Transfer the strawberries and syrup to a food processor and blend until smooth, then pass through a sieve. Place into the fridge to chill. To serve, cut each pavlova in half and place each half onto a plate. Pour over the strawberry sauce and serve. PAGE 22 | Local Answer - Issue 51

t’s difficult to assess whether Aitor Karanka’s apparent satisfaction with the spine of his team is a genuine reflection of the considerable improvement shown in the second part of the season or a veiled warning that we shouldn’t expect too many new arrivals at the Riverside during the summer. The marked improvement and previously unseen consistency shown by the defence throughout that period was an excellent demonstration of the effect he had on that aspect of the team once he had assessed its deficiencies, but sadly it was at a price. Having been among the leading goal scorers up to that point it suddenly became almost impossible to buy a goal at any cost. So having sorted out one end of the pitch to give us considerable optimism for next season we now desperately need to get organised up front so that the potential of playing two genuine wingers can be realised in front of goal. But that’s where the problem lies. A single striker can often work but there has
PAGE 26 | Local Answer - Issue 51
to be inventiveness from midfield and players to get forward quickly to support him once he has the ball. All the hard work that Danny Graham undoubtedly did was often wasted because the midfield during those better defensive displays offered very little creativity and nowhere near enough pace or ambition to get far enough up-field to cause opposition defences any kind of problem. It may look ironic that during the goal drought that blighted much of the season we had two strikers out on loan, but to be fair it wasn’t a lack of strikers that was our downfall but lack of support for the ones we had. But that’s the manager’s problem and one we sincerely hope he can solve. That said, one of the biggest disappointments of the last couple of seasons has been a lack of information emanating from the Riverside during early summer. Perhaps an even bigger disappointment was the discovery that it was because nothing much

was actually happening. Let’s hope this year’s a little different and that if nothing is actually happening at least let us know why. I have to say I’ve been quietly impressed by the advances that have been made since the Manager took up his position but those advances simply have to continue if the fan base is ever to return to the heady days of full houses we once enjoyed. Fingers - and everything else - will be crossed all summer. HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY AND WE’LL HOPEFULLY SEE YOU BACK AT THE RIVERSIDE IN AUGUST!
