S
ince England’s ignominious exit from the World Cup at the first hurdle we’ve heard numerous comments from Scotsmen on Radio phone-ins rejoicing at England’s demise. We decided to get our own back with these little Scottish tales.
- A bloke walks into a Glasgow library and says to the prim librarian, ‘Excuse me Miss, de ye hae ony books on suicide?’ To which she stops doing her tasks, looks at him over the top of her glasses and says ‘Bugger off, ye’ll no bring it back!’ - McTavish was in poor health so he asked his friend MacDougal if he would pour a bottle of scotch whisky over his grave when he died. MacDougal said, “Sure’n I’ll be glad to laddie, just as soon as it’s been round me kidneys” - When Sandy MacGillivray came back from his first trip to London, everyone in the village was keen to find out how he had got on. “Did you like it?” “Oh, it was no’ bad, but there was PAGE 4 | Local Answer - Issue 52
just the one thing wrong. The other guests in my hotel just would not go to their beds. They were in the corridor outside my room shouting and banging on my door until three o’clock in the morning.” So what did you do, Sandy?” “Och, I just kept on playing my bagpipes.” - A bagpiper was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man who had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in Glasgow. As he wasn’t familiar with that part of the city he got lost and, being a typical man, didn’t stop for directions. He finally arrived at a field where the diggers and crew were eating lunch. He felt really bad and apologized to the men for being late then went to the side of the hole they’d dug and saw that the vault lid was already in place. He didn’t know what else to do, so he started to play. The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around so he played out his heart and soul for

this man with no family and friends. As he played “Amazing Grace”, the workers began to weep. They wept, he wept, they all wept together. When he’d finished, he packed up my bagpipes and started for the car. As he opened the door he heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nuthing like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.” Apparently he was still lost . . . it’s a man thing!

It may be ‘only a game’ but the football World Cup has brought a great deal of heartache to we England fans over the last few weeks. It’s not all doom and gloom, however, as the following stories show - football can certainly have a lighter side! Two fans arrived in Brazil and were waiting to go into the ground for England’s first game when the first fan said ‘You know, I wish I’d brought my piano to Brazil with me.’ ‘Why on earth would you wish you’d brought your piano with you?’ asked his companion. ‘Because I left my bloody tickets on it.’ It was only four weeks into the season and United’s new goalkeeper had already let in twelve goals. GET PERSONAL WITH THE NEW TOYOTA AYGO
T
here is now more competition than ever for the small car market and Toyota have raised their game with the launch of a redesigned and revitalised model of their Aygo. Launched in the UK on July 1st, this brand new version of the popular city car sees a load of improvements, an increase in size and the ability to completely customize it to your own tastes. And first indications are that the new format successfully combines the around town advantages with a quite speedy performance on the open road.
Within that option list both the 3 and 5-door Aygo come in three grades: x, x-play and x-pression, with two special editions: x-cite and x-clusiv. As ever, the mid-spec trim will probably be the top seller, but the DAB-equipped, alloy wheeled and x-touch media carrying x-pression is an attractive proposition that certainly justifies the extra cost.
Perhaps the biggest visible difference is the distinctive X shaped front end, a feature that is part of ten interchangeable elements that collectively create the opportunity to have the car completely customized to your own tastes.
There’s currently only one engine to choose from; the three-cylinder 1.0-litre VVT-i which, although carried over from the previous model, has nevertheless been revised. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, with Toyota’s automated manual X-shift a £700 option.
As well as different coloured inserts, the alloy wheels, seats and the instrument panel are also interchangeable. Toyota claim the customisation packs are keenly priced and fitted by them to the customer’s chosen options. PAGE 14 | Local Answer - Issue 52
Higher equipment specifications that include an Xtouch multimedia system for smart connection of mobile phones, a rear view camera, push button start and smart entry elevate the car into a more luxurious bracket than it previously enjoyed.
In true ‘city car’ format the Aygo provides real convenience around town with excellent steering, a compact but surprisingly roomy size, a tight turning circle and good visibility. On the open road the use of high-tensile steel makes

it stiffer, but the car is also 60 kg lighter than its predecessor so it gives good grip during higher speeds even if those speeds are somewhat limited. That also makes it extremely affordable to run with an impressive 68.9mpg promised. The double-bubble roof – unique to Aygo – has created excellent back seat headroom to enable four average sized adults to sit comfortably, but they have also given lots of aerodynamic attention to detail with fins in the rear lights and a front splitter helping to maximise efficiency and make life as easy as possible for the only engine option available. Inside, the new Aygo is much more sophisticated, with less exposed metalwork and materials that are more pleasant to the touch. With on-the-road prices starting from £8595 this is a car that looks great, is comfortable to drive and is affordable to run. It’s definitely worth a look!

But you’ve got to give the band (or lead song-writer Sergio Pizzorno specifically) credit for venturing even further into left-field territory, as opposed to playing it safe. 48:13 while does mark itself as Kasabian’s most dynamic record to date, it’s identified more-so by its raw, electronic edge scattered about the thirteen compositions. Sadly, as intriguing this is to find guitars meshing with synthesizers, the unfortunate occurrence of this album, is its severe lack of ambition and drive to take this album further.

Yet there’s no doubt Kasabian can still be good at what they do, and moments such as Bumblebee & Doomsday fondly remind us of the

band’s early catalog of singles that gave their sound such a renowned identity. And in an even greater positive note, Treat does exactly what it says and surprises its listener in the latter half with one of the album’s most catchy and groovy pattern of beats that’s more akin to the dance floor than a rock concert. But for all the opportune moments and instances wherein you’re hoping the band go somewhere with what they’re suggesting, 48:13 for the most part falls flat on its face - under the premise
that an incorporation of electronics is all that matters. Sadly, not only is this not the case, it’s a colossal error of judgement on the band’s behalf. For every little ounce of hope and promise, there’s a pound of dead weight dooming the album to nothing more than deprived filler.

And with the four-year wait for a new album, the troubles seem to have mounted more so on the music side. Love Frequency, Klaxons’ third album in seven years, is plagued with missed opportunities - refined harmonies and interesting uses of electronics and arrangements, damaged by the band’s shockingly amateurish lyrics and an overwhelming lack of debut LP, Myths Of The Near Future’s, once lively energy.

And with “What Is This Heart?”, Krell proves he’s in no mood to let that crown slip anytime soon. Though while this record shines on its stripped back approach in contrast to his previous album’s hazy and dreamy production style, it’s Krell’s instrumentation and his lyrical themes of loss, morale, and even contemplating suicide that make this a fascinating listen.

MAKE THE MOST OF THE SUMMER PEA HARVEST
N
othing beats the delicate aroma and sweet flavour of home-grown British peas and now is the best time to take full advantage. At their peak during the summer months, peas are readily available but should be dealt with very quickly because their naturally sweet character starts to become starchy and floury in texture. So to preserve their fresh, sweet flavour, it’s best to cook them soon after picking. Look for firm, brightlyhued pods with a crisp texture. Conversely, mature peas with a floury texture are ideal for soup-making so don’t throw them out! The good news is that in their frozen state peas are one of the few vegetables that retain their flavour, so if you have a choice between buying peas well-past their prime, but in their pod, and frozen ones - go for the latter.

bviously they are great with the Sunday lunch or as a side serving with fish and chips but we thought we’d give you a great recipe that makes the most out of their delicious taste while also using up a lot of the stuff most of us find as leftovers in the fridge!
EGG FRIED RICE WITH HAM AND PEAS - Prep time 15 min; Cooking time 15 min; Serves 4 Ingredients: 1 tbsp sunflower oil ; 2 garlic cloves, finely grated ; 1 red chilli, finely chopped; 1 thumbsized piece of finely grated fresh ginger; bunch of spring onions, thinly sliced; 2 large carrots, thinly sliced; 1 red pepper, finely chopped; 1 tsp sesame oil; 1 tbsp soy sauce; 1 tbsp fish sauce; 150 g cooked ham, or ham hock, finely chopped; 150 g of fresh or frozen peas; 300 g cooked rice, cold; 2 large eggs, lightly whisked. Method: Heat the sunflower oil in a large frying pan and stir-fry the garlic, chilli and ginger for 1 minute. Add the spring onions, carrots and red pepper and stir-fry for a further 3 minutes. Stir through the sesame oil, soy sauce and Thai fish sauce over the heat for 1 minute. Add the ham and peas and gently mix through. Add the cooked rice to the pan and mix to combine with the vegetables and ham. Make a well in the centre and pour in the whisked egg. Allow to set briefly, then, working quickly, stir the egg and quickly incorporate the rice from the sides until everything is combined. Cook for 2 minutes then serve immediately in a big bowl for a quick and tasty dinner. PAGE 22 | Local Answer - Issue 52

ast month I dared venture the hope that at least during this summer’s football break there would be some concrete news emerging from the Riverside, whether it be progressive or otherwise. Well, not surprisingly because it’s something we’ve come to expect, the silence has been pretty deafening. It’s obvious to everyone that one of ‘Boro’s biggest problems in the last four years has been the continued decline in both performances and attendances and while there is a definite correlation between the two there is also a genuine feeling amongst ‘Boro fans that poor public relations and a distinct lack of information is a huge frustration that leads to an underwhelming view of what we can hope for during the next nine or ten months. That means that the people who are slightly undecided about season ticket renewals will err on the side of caution and save their money, adding additional stress to attendance numbers. So far, this summer has been a pretty miserable experience for people like

me who combine being a ‘Boro fan with being an England fan. Perhaps the common denominator, though, has been the lack of expectation. The least surprising aspect of England’s Brazilian demise is that it was absolutely no surprise to anyone. OK, the performance was a decided improvement on Euro 2012 but it was still pretty inept and that was surely what we anticipated given that we were going into the competition with no genuine world class players - and sadly, that has to include Rooney. Look at the facts of the two games that eliminated us. Not accepted in the English game because they wouldn’t succumb to the traditional British behavioural expectations, both Suarez and Balotelli displayed ability that no English player could hope to emulate and that was the resounding reason for our early exit. It may well be that the young players blooded in this tournament may eventually reach the same dizzy heights but the fact remains that in the Premiership good young English players are vastly outnumbered by foreign mercenaries and until that problem is addressed the future still looks dim.

A similar scenario is now prevalent at Middlesbrough because there is little doubt that we don’t have any player who can begin to compare with the likes of Junhino, Emmerson, Merson, Ravanelli and the others who contributed to the most successful period in our history. The most amazing thing about football, however, is that success has always come in cycles with Liverpool the most recent example of a team who have re-emerged from the doldrums. The current financial input from abroad may make that scenario increasingly difficult for a team whose geographical attraction is limited but real football fans never give up hope. That’s why most of can’t wait for August 9th and the visit of Birmingham City.
