THE HARDEST QUESTIONS IN LIFE
W
e recently ran a piece on some of the questions life often throws up and since then a few more have reared their heads. It’s certainly worth asking them just in case there’s a genius out there who has all the answers.
If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhoea, does that mean that one out of five enjoys it? Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren’t they just stale bread to begin with? If people from Poland are called Poles, then why aren’t people from Holland called Holes? If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled? Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist, but a person who drives a race car is not called a racist? If it’s true that we are here to
help others, then what exactly are the others here for? If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, then doesn’t it follow that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed? Do Lipton Tea employees take ‘coffee breaks?’ I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks, so I wondered what do Chinese mothers use, Toothpicks? Is it true that you never really learn to swear until you learn to drive? Why, why, why do we press harder on the remote control when we know the batteries are getting weak?

LOCAL ANSWER
Why do banks charge a fee due to insufficient funds; when they already know you’re broke? Why is it that when someone tells you that there are one billion stars in the universe you believe them, but if they tell you there is wet paint you have to touch it to check? Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a punch at him? Why hasn’t Tarzan got a beard? Why did Kamikaze pilots wear helmets? Whose cruel idea was it to put an “s” in the word “lisp”? If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes? Why do people run over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it and then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?
How do those dead bugs get into the enclosed light fixtures? Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that’s falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over? Why, in winter, do we try to keep the house as warm as it was in summer when we complained about the heat? AND FINALLY, OUR FAVOURITE: The statistics on sanity say that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they’re OK...then it’s you! Rosie’s Home Dog Boarding Ingleby Barwick • No Crates or Kennels, Lives at home with Rosie • Doggie Day Care • Dog Walking • Dog Taxis • Licensed and Insured

In The Garden
April Gardening Tips If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose! If it stays warm and dry over the coming days/weeks, water saving strategies including using bath water and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily, are a handy tool. For those of you who own a pond, keep it topped up and free of pond weed - green algae can be toxic to pets so cleaning is a must.
Keep picking! This is a month of lush abundance, so do make the most of it. Pick vegetables when they are young. As they mature both flavour and texture become coarser and some plants, such as courgettes, actually respond to harvesting by producing more flowers and fruits right into the autumn. But keep weeding and watering too. Weeds may look unsightly but they also steal essential water from your plants. Tomatoes, for example, need consistent watering to avoid blossom end rot (dark patches on their bottom ends) and many vegetables will bolt if allowed to dry out. Damp down greenhouse floors in the morning to create ideal humid growing conditions. DO NOT damp down in the evening.

Fruits are also a great source for harvest with blackberries, raspberries, loganberries, tayberries, nectarines, apricots, and even early apples and pears being in abundance. Watch closely, as you can usually tell when they are ripe if they come off the tree with an easy twist and there - a couple already lying on the ground is usually a good sign of this.

BUT MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL Don’t forget to water and feed your plants on a regular basis. The recent high temperatures and gorgeous weather makes this an utmost important aspect this month. Don’t be fooled by potential cloud-cover and/or less sunnier days that may come; humidity and continuing lack of rainfall make watering your plants a high priority for August. Follow all these simple steps and you and your garden are sure to have a great August this year!

A SLEEKER, SPORTIER LOOK FOR THE NEW FORD FOCUS
O
ver the years Ford have consistently upgraded their most popular models with examples like the Escort changing shape and spec on numerous occasions and creating almost a cult following for the original styles. They are continuing that trend with the Focus and the completely overhauled version is now available. The official release date is July and prices are expected to closely match the current model, ranging from around £14,000 for the 1.6-litre Ford Focus Studio to £25,495 for the top-of-the range model. Trim levels are likely to stay the same, so Edge, Zetec, Titanium and Titanium X will still be available. The new Focus is the latest car in the company’s ‘One Ford’ strategy, which aims to sell models largely unchanged around the world. Both external and interior changes have been made to create a sleeker and more modern look. A prominent new chrome grille - far more distinctive than the one on the outgoing model - replaces the
triangular vents and round headlights to give a much more pronounced nose style. Add to that the fact the whole car is wider and lower and it is a combination that makes for a much sportier look. At the rear, again the lights are slimmer, while a new bumper emphasises the increased width. There are also a couple of new colours to choose from, as well as some upmarket new alloy wheel designs. Inside, the number of buttons on the dashboard has been drastically reduced to make things much less complicated. Cabin quality has also improved thanks to the use of better materials, while new on-board technology includes Ford’s latest SYNC 2 connected infotainment system. And while the new Focus will also come equipped with better safety features an even more attractive proposition is the promise of improved economy across the whole range with some models almost 20 per cent more efficient than their predecessors. The most economical engine in the new Focus will be sufficiently frugal to
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Stockton’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER
make the car exempt from road tax. New engine choices include a 1.5-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol and an efficient 1.5-litre turbo diesel, while the suspension and steering systems have been re-tuned to help ensure the Focus remains the class benchmark when it comes to ride quality and driver enjoyment. The aforementioned improved safety features include an improved Active City Stop (ACS) collision avoidance system, which should reduce the impact of collisions and now works at speeds of up to 31mph (the old system operated up to 19mph). Also new is the Focus’ Pre-Collision Assist system, it works at higher speeds than ACS, and can also apply the brakes if it senses an imminent collision. Distance Alert, meanwhile, warns the driver when they encroach on a preset distance from the car in front. The new Focus also gets a raft of new features such as Perpendicular Parking (for parking alongside other vehicles in car parks), Cross Traffic Alert that warns of approaching vehicles when reversing, and Park-Out Assist that helps the driver to exit a parallel parking space. It also gets the company’s MyKey technology, which was pioneered in the Ford Fiesta. It allows the owner to customise a key to restrict the car’s top speed, impose volume limits on the stereo, and permanently lock on the car’s safety features (such as Electronic Stability Control). The new model also boasts an improved Adaptive Lighting System which increases the range of its headlights at high speeds and provides
more focused light in town, as well as working to better illuminate cyclers and pedestrians on the road. As with the current model, the new Ford Focus will have large door bins, but the new model also gets new cup holders big enough for a large one-litre bottle. Ford has also worked to make the car’s interior quieter, with thicker glass used for the side windows and deeper, sound absorbent carpets. There’s also a door edge protector that extends when the door opens to protect it from scratching against high kerbs. To the average motorist, however, it is the sleekly stylish looks that will really attract and that it what will continue to keep the Focus high in the popularity stakes.

Jungle - Jungle XL Recordings
What we uncover then in this the twelve-track forty-minute debut is an interesting flutter of 90’s-inspired sounds: RnB, soul, funk and disco meticulously flowing into a melting pot of late-afternoon/early-evening vibes. The Heat certainly epitomizes Jungle’s charm and excess in groove which helps identify the album’s attraction later on: slow-cooked drumbeats, carefully-meshed harmonies and melodies that surround the listener without dominating or coming across as indulgent.
But one of the more surprising benefits is how engrossing and ‘live-sounding’ J & T: this was the only means of identity these tracks feel; Busy Earnin’s handclapled choral hooks & Drops’ low-lit lounge that the production duo Jungle were aesthetic really grabbing the listener known as when they first dropped and pulling them into the duo’s reclined their debut 7” back in 2013. A slow crawl of information and hefty amount mood-set and collective ambience. All of which takes place in the album’s of interest later, and Jungle have set fully-brimmed first half, and for a brief their sights on impressing, while still moment, nothing takes away from the remaining undeniably ambiguous sense of involvement with this music. and shrouded. But the problem, and sadly what scathes this album is how the secondhalf appears to repeat the process; not necessarily faltering on weak performances, but relying too heavily, and too desperately, on the ground already trotted.
like Lucky I Got What I Want ending the record on a whimper as opposed to a bang, there’s certainly source material to get excited over here, but on debut, Jungle haven’t quite managed to convince their material is worth its weight in variety, as well as consistency.
This is mainly the fault of Jungle’s vocal delivery which, though interesting at first, doesn’t really evolve or deviate from the initial harmonies of previous. And it shows on moments such as Crumbler where vocals lose their identity and deter from instrumentation trying to recapture that former intimacy. And with tracks

Manic Street Preachers - Futurology Sony Music There aren’t as many British rock bands still going that can stand on the same level as Manic Street Preachers. Though this is their third album in four years, the Welsh trio continue to prove themselves consistent that they’re as much about the driving guitar melodies and chorus-chanting lead lyrics, as they are the underlining themes tieing the record together. And while Manic’s sociopolitical lyricism isn’t anything new, the uncanny, and simple, lead of guitars, drums and sonic atmosphere, twelve albums later, loses none of its eagerness and resulting right to excite.

A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Sea When Absent Lefse Records It’s easy to remark over a Philadelphia-based band taking the name of a Scottish city, and noting the geographical contrast. But musically there’s quite the bond between these two musically-rich cities. And with Sea When Absent, A Sunny Day In Glasgow bring to fruition some of the best displays in both regions’ take on genres such as pop, shoegaze and that extra little sprinkling of experimental song-writing. It’s rough, it’s sturdy, it’s sometimes heartfelt, but for the most part, Glasgow’s sound manages to push beyond its blurred, translucent borders and break through with a sound brimming with both colour and delight.

COURGETTE - A SUPERB SUMMER INGREDIENT WITH A VARIETY OF USES.
W
hile the rest of the world embraces the name Zucchini for what we Brits call the courgette there is no denying that this summer squash is a wonderfully productive plant that reaches its peak (in this country anyway) in August. Although growing up to a metre long, the crop should be harvested well before it reaches that length to get the most of its subtle flavour. While it can be dark or light green, its close relative the golden zucchini - can be deep yellow or orange.
I
n a culinary context, zucchini is treated as a vegetable and is usually cooked and presented as a savory dish or accompaniment. Botanically, however, zucchini is the swollen ovary of the zucchini flower and is therefore a fruit that originates in the Americas. Most allotments - and certainly every grocer or supermarket- is loaded with this prolific product so we’ve decided to give you some great ideas for its use.
ZUCCHINI LOAF - Try this wonderful large loaf, filled with nuts, courgette and raisins. Ingredients: 3 eggs, 1 cup oil, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 cups grated and drained zucchini, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 2 cups flour, 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 3 teaspoons cinnamon, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup raisins, 1 cup chopped walnuts. Method: Beat eggs gently in a large bowl, then stir in the oil, sugar, zucchini, and vanilla. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, cinnamon, and salt. Stir into egg mixture until well blended, then add raisins and nuts and stir. Pour into a large, greased loaf pan and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour. Absolutely delicious! SPICY ZUCCHINI FRITTATA - A great way to enjoy this lovely Italian omelette. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced, 1 large jalapeno thinly sliced, 1 large zucchini thinly sliced, 1 cup fresh corn kernels (or a tin of sweet corn!), Coarse salt, 8 large eggs Method: Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat and cook onion and jalapeno, stirring, until tender, about 5 minutes. Add zucchini and corn and cook until tender (about 7 minutes more). Season with salt. In a bowl, whisk eggs with 1/2 teaspoon salt and pour into pan with vegetables. Cook until sides are just beginning to set, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer pan to oven - preheated to 175C and cook until just set in the middle and lightly golden and puffed on top, 2 to 3 minutes.
ZUCCHINI AND SUN DRIED TOMATOES - A lovely little starter for the summer months. Ingredients : 2 zucchini, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, 2 ounces sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil (about 24), 3 ounces goat cheese, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives, 2 tablespoons extravirgin olive oil. Sport PLENTY OF REASONS FOR OPTIMISM!
D
espite the paucity of incoming transfer business so far this summer what we have actually seen certainly lends some reason for optimism. Kike’s 2 goal debut - albeit against Marbella who don’t come across as world beaters - suggests he knows where the back of the net is. The short experience we had of Tomas Mejias before his injury also suggests we now have three pretty good goalkeepers, so the front and back of the team’s spine is starting to look a lot healthier. Perhaps the best news so far, is the snippets coming through that Kenneth Omuruo is happy to return to the Riverside. At the rear end of the season the partnership between him and Ben Gibson blossomed beautifully, and if that’s the central pairing at the start of the season, it can only auger well for our fight to keep up with big spenders Norwich and Fulham. To also have Jonathan Woodgate and Daniel Ayala on defensive standby means we’re starting to have real strength in depth.
If the continued attempts to sign Jelle Vossen from Belgian team K.R.C. Genk ever come to fruition that would also seem to be good business with his record of 77 goals in 184 appearances, but there are very obvious differences in the two club’s current evaluation of the player. Most of us remember the scenario last season when we weren’t a huge amount short of signing Leeds’ Ross McCormack with an estimated fee of around £4.5m. The twenty odd goals he despatched last term would have made a huge difference to our season but the fact that he has now signed for Fulham for a reported sum of £11m makes that particular decision look a little backward. It is, of course, easy for supporters to look on from the sidelines and demand that big money should be spent but it isn’t our money and it doesn’t always work. Who can forget that our record signing is Afonso Alves and how bad was he?

The recent pre-season trip to Spain was obviously pretty successful and Karanka was pleased with the way it went. One of the best things to come out of it was the form of teenager Brad Fewster who scored three goals on the trip, though Karanka is quick to point out he needs time to progress. It’s nice to see that the Academy is still bringing kids on and that they will eventually get their chance to prove themselves. With the financial fair play restrictions now an important aspect of any club’s finances Academy products will play an increasingly important part. History suggests that Middlesbrough can continue to thrive in that area.
