t’s always difficult to look at other people’s jobs without thinking they have it easy. After being interviewed by the school governors for a job in a primary school, a young lady - who’d recently qualified after three years of teacher training at college - said:
“You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, as well as how to register to vote, balance a chequebook, and also apply for a job?

In The Garden
April Gardening Tips Get your compost going by buying a bin designed primarily to house compost, or build a partially enclosed and easily accessible area for a heap. It’s essential to replace the goodness in soil and autumn produces quantities of garden waste that will add invaluable organic richness back into your soil next spring. Remember to add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable plants are ideal but never add diseased or pest-ridden material to your compost heap. Doing so will nurture whatever villain you are trying to eliminate with loving care! British weather is of course unpredictable, as it always is, so should September turn out to be a warm and dry month, watering is a necessity. Make sure you do this thoroughly once or twice a week, and often enough for plants both
indoors and out. Containers and hanging baskets require watering every day. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, it’s advised to leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in dry periods camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas for example will abort next season’s flowers if they become too dry. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this MUST be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. If your soil is heavy clay, it’s best to start digging it over now. Make

sure to add plenty of organic matter to improve the quality, as well as pea shingle to improve the drainage. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the cold will break the lumps down, making spring planting infinitely easier. Also, make sure your ground is weed-free by applying plenty of weedkiller. Most perennial weeds are susceptible to weedkiller this month and it will carry on working throughout the winter. Make sure to clear any debris and diseased material from your garden in the process - pests and diseases will reappear in your garden in time for spring if you are not careful, so get rid of them now.

CARS....NEW OR USED? THE WAY TO DECIDE FOR YOURSELF!
P
erhaps one of the most surprising news items in recent weeks has been the announcement that new car sales figures have risen for the past 29 consecutive months. Recession, you might ask, what recession? In the past few months alone, sales are up by a remarkable 10%. Compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers, the latest figures have persuaded that particular body to increase its forecast for annual sales growth in 2014 from 6% to 8%. If that comes to fruition it will see more new cars sold in 2014 than in any of the past ten years. So, seeing as we’ve been through an elongated and quite dire recession, why have new car sales been so good? Ironically, the recession itself has certainly contributed to these figures. The general lack of available money has instigated some astoundingly good offers from manufacturers eager to ‘move as much metal’ as possible. This has subsequently led to a surprising change in many people’s previous
insistence that they’d never buy a new car. We’ve all heard the opinion that a new car loses a huge amount of its value as soon as it leaves the showroom, and really, there is very little argument against that. Yet chances are the people who use that expression have never actually bought a new car and don’t understand the advantages that such a policy can attract. Buying a car is probably your second biggest expenditure after the house so it’s important to get it right. Do you buy new or used? New cars are more expensive but are generally more reliable. Used cars are cheaper but might cost more to run. That means that you need to factor in additional costs like insurance, maintenance, fuel costs, road tax, repairs, and servicing. And while sitting in your brand new car for the first time can be an exciting feeling, you should think through the benefits and drawbacks of going ahead with buying new before you decide whether it’s right for you.
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Stockton’ when calling advertisers
LOCAL ANSWER
The benefits of a new car include a full manufacturer’s warranty, which will give you an easy way to have many faults repaired for free (usually around three years duration but can be as long as seven with some manufacturers). Additionally there are a variety of special offers such as interestfree finance, additional free ‘extras’ and adherence to your own exact specification. The disadvantages are that it’s obviously more expensive, the value of a new car drops significantly in the first year and new cars have to be ordered from the factory so you may have to wait for weeks or even months for your car to be delivered. Buying a used car means that while you may not be able to source the exact specification you want, you can save thousands on a suitable alternative. Most have already been serviced by the vendor so are available to drive away immediately while there’s usually a wide choice - many of which are no longer available in the ‘new car’ scenario. Nearly-new cars already have a significant drop in value which normally occurs just after purchase, and obviously there’s no showroom tax.
So, like most things in life, the choice is yours and depends on a great many things. Perhaps most significantly, when you look to buy your new car, is the use to which it will be put. If high mileage is part of your agenda then the luxury, comfort, reliability and - in this day and age the economy - of new technology will be important. If you want to go relatively short distances and are not too bothered about the more up-market aspects of a car then you will probably be far better off buying used.
Whatever you decide we hope you’re happy with the result and you enjoy your motoring.
Sadly with a used car there’s less chance of a significant warranty; there’s always possibilities of unwanted hidden history; there are less options to find exact specifications you desire and - if that kind of thing bothers you - there is a reduction in esteem when your snooty neighbours check out your registration plate. The month’s latest releases reviewed! that combines the personal, emotive gravitas of RnB with the colourful and ear-grabbing delights of pop and contemporary electronica. But even with these comparisons - and despite the initial surprise the cover may project - LP1 is anything but confounded or confused with itself. If anything, what FKA Twigs brings to the table (the table in question being solo acts trying their hand at narrativedriven RnB fused with electronic elements) feels fresh and invigorating an act that sets its sights to highlight the sum of its parts, as much as the finished piece itself.
FKA Twigs - LP1 Young Turks It may come as a surprise, but female singer-songwriter and producer FKA Twigs is actually the one present on the cover to her full-length debut, LP1 - albeit presented in a rather surreal and almost comical manner than what we’d expect. In reality though, this is one of the purest surmises one can use to describe Twigs’ sound - a style
One of the principle elements that drives this record is Twigs herself; her voice and harmonic resonance is without question one of the most captivating I’ve heard for some time. The fact that opening track Preface is comprised mostly of Twigs’ choral, chamber-like vocals harmonized only addresses how strong her performance is. And soon after, tracks like Lights On & Two Weeks only expand on the record’s attraction - Twigs’ precision and tonal quality standing tall with the tracks’

beat patterns and experimental take on song arrangement. Lyrically, and conceptually, it’d be easy to take to the album’s focus on tropes regarding love & romance as a weakness. But what we’re given - be it on track Hours’ concern for desire and intimacy, or Video Girl’s uncomfortable referencing of Twigs’ time as a dancer in other artists’ music videos - instead is something altogether more compelling without overindulging on content.
how Twigs herself adds a degree of intense emotion or reflection in her lyrics, this is by no means an ominous or universal class in how to present one’s self. But at its bare, most honest, or even most sincerest, LP1 is as much a stylish foray forward as it is an absorbing reflection of the past.
8.4/10 Thumbs Up: Lights On | Two Weeks |
It’s context that prooves to be Twigs’ Video Girl | Kicks trump card. And whether it’s how Thumbs Down: Give Up sounds marry up with her vocals, or Twin Atlantic - Great Divide Red Bull Records
With a pop rock fluorescence and tidy production easily comparable to established favourites fun. & Biffy Clyro, Scottish quartet Twin Atlantic aim to become the next stadium rock act with their third album; arguably their most aggressive sound, save for the occasional - and interesting - slow-down of a piano piece or introspective ballad. Unfortunately there’s no shying away from the band’s two-fold problem-area: their uninteresting, superficial lyricism and more-so the latter half’s devoid lack of variation. Passionate? Yes. Memorable? Less so
5.5/10
Moiré - Shelter Werk Discs/Ninja Tune The dance floor may be lying in peripheral view on Moiré’s debut full-length, but there’s something altogether more hypnotic stirring about Shelter’s steady and patient build-up of electronic beats, sampled vocals and leads that suggest rather than outright proclaim. It’s not exactly the most revolutionary or ground-breaking of particularly moodier electronic records as of late, but Moiré certainly makes the most of the tension these sounds generate. There’s plenty of atmosphere, plenty of intrigue, and above all, plentiful amounts of eagerness to hear what lies in wake thereafter.

Sport A GREAT START THAT COULD - AND SHOULD - HAVE BEEN EVEN BETTER!
E
arly deadlines mean that at the time of writing this exciting and still expanding - new ‘Boro formation has played four, won three and lost one, though one of the wins was the comfortable victory at Oldham in the league cup. But I have to confess I’m still seething at what could have been a win at Leeds but for one of the worst refereeing decisions of the season so far. Albert Adoma’s wonderful strike should certainly have stood and that might have put a whole new complexion on the game. Leeds’ subsequent home defeat against Brighton shows that they are nowhere near as good as that win against ‘Boro might suggest. Despite the rancour surrounding that decision, we have every reason to be thrilled at the way things are developing. Karanka’s dips into the transfer market so far have been inspirational and a great deal of credit must go to Steve Gibson for firstly finding him and then continuing to bankroll the latest attempt to get back into the Premiership. But it’s the way in which the team are gelling together that offers the most optimism for a great nine months ahead. Kike’s three goals in four is an exciting statistic because it’s a long time since we had
someone to rely on in that department. If we can also get Patrick Bamford on loan from Chelsea - at the time of writing it’s in the balance - then it augers well after he scored 26 goals last season. The immediate impact Adam Clayton has made in midfield is also a great sign of things to come and despite the disappointment of Ben Gibson’s injury the silky skills and comfort on the ball of Kenneth Omeruo are a real indication that he is destined to become a superstar in future seasons. Sadly, that will be for Chelsea and not us! Adam Reach has also turned in a couple of excellent displays and has given us the width that is missing while Carayol remains injured. So we now have three consecutive home games and while that puts enormous pressure on fans’ budgets let’s hope the really healthy crowd for the Birmingham starter can be maintained. If performances are anything to go by there is every reason to hope, in fact, that they can even be bettered. One other pleasing thing to note at the start of the Championship season is that no team has come out of the

blocks unblemished and it remains the kind of league where - on their day anyone can beat anyone. And let’s be honest, with the likes of Millwall, Sheffield Wednesday and Bournmouth among the better teams at the start while relegated big spenders Fulham are stuck at the bottom without a point there are a whole host of twists and turns ready to reveal themselves. If we can maintain some semblance of consistency - and at the moment that’s a great possibility - then we have every chance of making a fight for honours. Six wins out of eight at the end of last season are the kind of results we need to see. That we already have three out of four is terrific and obviously spread across the season would allow us to forget all about the playoffs and go up automatically. Keep your fingers crossed! The Good Old Days
WHY FOOD WAS DIFFERENT IN THE FIFTIES
W
e’ve often commented on the huge social differences that have evolved over the last fifty or sixty years and a discussion the other night (yes, in the pub!) centred around the way our eating habits have changed over the years. Those of us who were around in the fifties (all of us, actually) came up with the following list that - while constituting change can never be considered ‘improvements!’ In the fifties:
Curry was a surname, a takeaway was a mathematical problem and a pizza was something to do with a leaning tower. Chips were just plain chunks of potato fried in lard. The only choice we had was whether to put the salt on or not. Rice was only eaten as a milk pudding. Calamari was called squid and we used it as bait to catch proper fish. A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining. Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking and brown bread was something poor people ate. Tea was made from leaves in a teapot and was never, ever green. Sugar was something quite pleasant
and certainly not a health risk. Sugar cubes were considered posh. Nobody even considered that fish could have had fingers and raw fish was called poverty, not sushi. Seaweed was definitely not a recognised food. Cooking and eating outside was called camping and healthy food consisted of anything edible. None of us had ever heard of yoghurt and people who didn’t peel potatoes were considered lazy. Indian restaurants were only found in India. ‘Kebab’ wasn’t even a word, never mind a food. Prunes were medicinal. Surprisingly, muesli was readily available in those days. It was called cattle feed. Water came out of taps. If someone had suggested bottling it and charging more than petrol for it they would have become a laughing stock. And finally, the only thing you never saw on the dinner table were elbows!
Happy Days!
