Humour

IT’S A WOMAN THING!

T

here is no doubt we men sometimes deserve the criticism to which we are subjected by our wives and partners but there are also occasions when it is simply unfair. After all, we do tend to work all our lives to keep the family fed and housed and most of the less pleasant jobs like removing spiders and taking the bins out usually go unappreciated. Listening to my wife and a group of her friends recently, however, was definitely taking things too far. Here were some of the comments... One elderly spinster among them was explaining why she had never married. ‘Well,’ she said, ‘I have a fireplace that smokes, a dog that growls, a cat that stays out all night and a parrot that swears. Why would I need a man?’ ‘I’ve just made a load of money on Ebay selling my set of Encyclopaedia Britannica books,’ said one of the ladies. It appears I’ve married a man who thinks he knows everything.’ One of the girls had a continued huge smile on her face and when asked why she said ‘my husband keeps telling me I’m hopeless in bed.’ ‘Well why should that make you smile?’ asked another. ‘Last night,’ she said, ‘I went out and got a second

opinion.’ ‘My husband,’ said another, ‘always preaches that ‘if you give a man a fish he’ll eat for a day. If you teach him to fish he’ll eat forever.’ Well how come since he learnt to fish he just sits in a boat and drinks all day?’ One said ‘they say that men work harder than women. Of course they do. They have to. We get it right the first time! ‘Men,’ one woman claimed, ‘are like wine. They start out like grapes and it’s our job to stamp on them and keep them in the dark until they finally mature into something you’d like to have dinner with.’ ‘I often wondered why black widow spiders eat their partners after mating,’ said another. ‘ Now I know. It’s to stop the snoring before it starts!’ ‘Well,’ replied her friend, ‘the last time a man was in my bed gasping for breath and calling my name it was because I hadn’t held the pillow down for long enough.’ And the final insult was from the woman who asked what they call a man who’s lost all his intelligence. ‘A widower’ was apparently the answer. Don’t worry, guys. We’ll get our own back next month!

In The Garden

April Gardening Tips

L

ate autumn is a quiet time in the garden, with short, cold days and long, often frosty, nights. Due to the dipping temperatures and lower light levels November tends to be a foggy month, as well as wet and cold. Most plants are dormant at this time of year and require very little attention. There are still a few tasks to be done, such as continuing to rake-up leaves and digging over the ground for next spring’s planting, whenever the weather is suitable. Also continue to check stakes, ties and supports on trees and shrubs. The end of November is a good time to start planting bare rooted and container grown deciduous trees and shrubs (both ornamental and fruiting). Planting time depends on when they are delivered and what condition the ground is in. If the ground is frozen or waterlogged, heel in bare-rooted subjects and store container grown ones until things improve. Plants in the greenhouse will still need occasional watering, the greenhouse air is likely to be damp and cold, a combination favourable to various unpleasant fungal infections. Ventilation is still necessary, to

get fresh air into the greenhouse, but it must be balanced against draughts and sudden frosts. If your greenhouse is a heated one, you will find daytime heating more and more necessary as the month passes. Artificial lighting is much more the province of the commercial grower, but you can take steps to ensure that whatever sunlight is around reaches your plants. Remove dust and dirt from the glass or plastic and clear leaves from the roof. Topping-up the Compost Heap All waste vegetation should be added to the compost heap to return the goodness to the soil and enrich the garden in future years. Any soft vegetation can be added including mowings, vegetable tops, the remains of ornamental plants and prunings (if shredded). Leaves should be composted separately as they will take much longer to break down, however, they will form excellent leaf mould, which is very useful product in the garden. So good in fact it’s worth gathering leaves from outside the garden (where allowed) to add to the pile.

PAGE 8 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

LOCAL ANSWER Composting should continue with all waste vegetation going onto the heap or into the garden recycle bin. All the hardy and halfhardy plants that are being pulled up now can be put on the compost heap. Taking care of Dahlias Except in the mildest areas of the UK, dahlias will have been killed back by the first really hard frost. Once this happens, cut them down to within about 15 cm (6 in) of the ground, label each plant clearly and carefully dig them up. Lift the plants using a spade set back from the roots so as not to damage them. Shake off all the loose soil, turn the tubers upside-down and stand them in trays, in a frost-free area to dry out. This allows any water to run out of the stems so that it doesn’t rot the tubers.

When the stem is completely dry, gently clean away the soil and snip off any remaining fibrous roots. You can then dust the tubers with sulphur powder or other approved insecticide-fungicide mixture to protect against storage rots. The tubers should now be stored in a dry and frost-free place until the spring. If you are in doubt about the right temperature, the tubers can be stored in boxes of dry compost or bark, or under a layer of straw. Inspect them occasionally during the winter to check on their condition. Don’t forget to lift, dry off and store any supports or stakes ready for next year.

THE HONDA CR-V - GOOD LOOKING, EFFICIENT AND INFINITELY SENSIBLE

U

sually considered the original of the ‘CR-V’ concept, the Honda version of the ‘Comfortable Runaround Vehicle led the way for a number of years before being annexed by more sporty versions from other manufacturers. It had, sadly, become a little tame, but the recently released fourth generation model has changed all that. Since that first model was introduced in 1995, over 5 million have been sold worldwide with almost 200,000 of those in the UK. That makes it a vital part of Honda’s sales strategy so it’s understandable that they haven’t been too radical with the changes, but what they have done is to make it one of the best family-orientated all-rounders on the market. The attractive new looks include a redesigned front end with LED lighting both there and at the rear.

They have also improved the width of the car and changes and improvements to over 60% of the chassis mean it’s more rigid than before though the suspension has been made more sensitive so hitting the inevitable pothole does not represent a problem. It has also earned the coveted Euro crash test rating so the safety aspect is pretty much assured. For practicality, the boot size has also been increased and offers an impressive 589 litres of space that will take most families on holiday in comfort. Internally, the cabin is wider than the original models and the high seating position is both practical and comfortable. Both the seats and the steering wheel are multi-adjustable so you can select your own driving position for maximum comfort and control.

There are people who have criticised the dash board with the words ‘uninspiring’ used rather frequently but we found it to be satisfyingly plain with the massive speedometer both attractive and easy to read. It’s also very spacious, with the back seat comfortably taking three people. The rear seat backs are also adjustable so the ultimate comfort can be experienced on long journeys. We tested the 1.6 iDTEC version with a 15977cc, four cylinder, 16 valve turbo diesel engine that is being made in Swindon.

brings with it keyless entry, electric leather seats, power tailgate, HDD satnav and a panoramic glass roof. Honda is also offering this CR-V in frontwheel drive for the first time, but only with the petrol engine. Electric windows, alloy wheels, parking sensors, DAB radio, Bluetooth connection, climate control and central locking are all available, but not in every model. You’ll need to check that out if you have real preferences. To sum up, the car is good looking and innovative, though also completely sensible. With a much improved exterior, more internal room, great economy and some innovative touches Though very smooth it packs quite a punch and is very responsive. HOPEFULLY A SLIGHT BLIP, BUT WE STILL HAVE SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO!

A

fter a tremendous seven game unbeaten run, the wheels certainly came off the cart at Wolves. Because of magazine deadlines this is being written as we look forward to an equally difficult encounter at Watford that could well lead to a similar result. Anything better will be a real bonus, but looking on the bright side (as you may have noticed I usually do) we are still in the sort of position we would have grabbed with both hands had we been offered it before a ball was kicked this season. And let’s be honest, it’s consistently good performances from people like George Friend, Grant Leadbitter, Adam Reach, Dimi Konstantopoulos and Kenneth Omeruo that show it is the defence and midfield that have been the main thrust of our performances so far. But - amid all the enthusiasm surrounding our recent results - the lack of goals from our main strikers seems to have been overlooked.

Vossen, Kike and Bamford all arrived with tremendous statistics behind them. Kike had scored 48 goals in 150 appearances for Murcia - almost one in every three games. Patrick Bamford scored 31 goals in 74 games while on loan to MK Dons and Derby County last season - almost a goal in every two and a quarter games. Over five years Jelle Vossen scored 105 goals in 244 games for Racing Club Genk - again one in around two and a quarter games. So how are they performing now? Top scorer so far this season is defensive midfielder Grant Leadbitter with seven goals. Between them - and in their defence it has to be said that Aitor Karanka hasn’t picked the three main strikers as often as I’m sure they would have liked - Kike, Bamford and Vossen have achieved exactly the same number. So do we look on this as a negative or do we imagine that having three recognised strikers who have so far underperformed is a sign that things can only get better? In my opinion it

LOCAL ANSWER

suggests that there are most certainly better times ahead. It’s a fact that goal scorers don’t suddenly lose their ability and I’m pretty sure Karanka is still trying to decide on his most influential eleven. Once he does, including who his main strike force is going to be, I’m confident we can look forward to some great performances in the months ahead. Perhaps the most satisfying aspect of the Championship so far is that noone has taken a grip on it. Nottingham Forest’s start suggested they were the most likely to be the ones but in typical Stuart Pearce style their great start has become a stutter. Our former heroic villain Steve McClaren has taken Derby County to the edge of success but we all know

from our previous experiences that luck plays a big part in his selections and can just as easily go against him. Circumstances in both the quarter and semi final second legs of our wonderful European season forced him to chuck an abundance of strikers onto the pitch for the second half, and that gave him and us - results that will stay forever in the history of Middlesbrough football club. After Watford, and before my next piece gets written, we are coming up to a period of three home games out of four and it has to be said that should Aitor find his perfect strike partnership the disappointment of the Wolves result could have completely disappeared. Let’s all hope so!

Recipe

EASY SCONES INGREDIENTS: 250g self raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder, a generous pinch of salt 60g butter chopped into cubes 150ml milk METHOD: You can add cheese (strong cheese is good but any works) for cheese scones, dried fruit or glace cherries for fruity scones or leave them plain if you’re that way inclined. Sieve together the flour, baking powder and the salt (or if you don’t have a sieve, just mix it all round in a mixing bowl). Add the butter to the flour mix and using your fingertips, rub them together until it looks like really, really fine breadcrumbs. Add your fruit or cheese at this point if you’re going to. Use about three hands of raisins in the fruity batch and about 150g grated cheese in cheese scones but you can use more or less depending on what you fancy and what you have in. Make a hole in the mixture and pour in about half the milk. Use a spoon to mix together and add more milk as you need to in order to make a dough.

When the mixture starts to resemble a dough then you can get it out of the bowl and pop it on a floured surface and give it a quick knead. The trick is to handle it as little as possible. Roll out the dough until it’s about 2.5cm (an inch) thick and then either use a cookie cutter or a glass to cut out your scones then transfer them to a lightly greased baking tray.

Brush a little milk on top to glaze them and if you’re making cheese scones you can also top with a little grated cheese. Pop them in the oven for around 15-20 minutes at around 200c. Always slice one in half when you think they’re ready to make sure they’re cooked through.
