In The Garden

A

s Christmas approaches, our to-do lists don’t often contain gardening tasks at this time of year. Luckily, you can take it a little easier this month without any risk to your garden; maintenance is the most important thing until spring. Of course, if you are looking to keep up the pace of your gardening, don’t worry, there are still plenty of smaller jobs to do! Clearing borders of dead or dying plants helps create tidy displays, showing off those still in bloom. The spent debris makes a great soil improver for next year, so get it rotting down. Prune harshly to improve the shape of your trees and shrubs, look out for flaws such as split or broken branches, and make sure you cut them back so they are healthier next year. Don’t rely on bought garden compost; it’s the perfect time of year to create

your own! Keep any plant cuttings and kitchen scraps, mix them together and allow them to rot down ready to be used next spring. Leaves and manure are great for creating an alternative to compost; leaf mould can act as soil coverage during those harsh winter months and manure can be rotted down and used to rejuvenate your soil with nutrients. If you’re looking for something a little more natural, green manures like clover or rye are great for improving soil nature’s way! Mulch requires very little work, and is great for applying to the roots of established or flowering plants. Let earth worms do all the hard work; they will eventually drag and blend the mulch into top soil. Don’t let ivy be a pest; it may seem like any other climbing plant usefully covering your bare walls and fences.

PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers

Unfortunately no matter how much you try and keep it in bounds, ivy always has a way of escaping! It has a habit of smothering other plants and annoying neighbours, so make sure you keep cutting back those escaping shoots or get rid of it altogether. Be aware of pests and diseases, one of the most prevalent diseases this time of year is root rot. Stop root rot by placing pots in the rain shadow of a wall or fence and lift them off the ground on pot feet or large stones to let the moisture drain out. Prevent falling leaves from going near the base of your roses to stop the spreading of rose black spot. Take hardwood cuttings. Propagate a wide range of fruits trees and shrubs by taking hardwood cuttings from healthy plants in winter.

Protection December is all about protection for your plants and garden wildlife. Protect ponds by catching any fallen leaves with a small net and trimming off any dying or tatty foliage so they don’t pollute the water. You may wake up on those winter mornings to find your pond covered in ice, fish can withstand such low temperatures but can’t survive too much in the water. Float a tennis ball on the surface to

stop ice taking over your pond and keep your fish and pond wildlife safe! If you are extremely worried about some of your tender plants, the best thing to do is move them inside when the weather becomes more severe. The cold weather doesn’t just affect your plants, don’t let your containers crack as the frost starts to set in, wrap them with bubble polythene or fleece. If you have lots of containers pack them together and wrap protection around as a group. Your garden furniture is also at risk, cover furniture with polythene sheeting to protect it from becoming damp and possibly rusty. Remember to replenish and add water for birds to drink out of. Watch out for bird nests when pruning. Many gardeners assume that birds aren’t hungry when they look plump; birds actually fluff up their feathers to minimize the loss of heat from their bodies when they are seriously hungry.

Christmas

SPECIAL THOUGHTS FOR CHRISTMAS

D

ecember simply isn’t the most appropriate time to talk about new cars so this month we have dispensed with the motors page and instead are looking at the good feelings that Christmas brings to us all. We’ve found lots of lovely quotes from many different people all associated with the joy that emanates from this most special of seasons and share them with you here. May we also take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year! “The lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.” Garrison Keillor “Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” Eric Severeid “From the baking aisle to the post office line to the wrapping paper bin in the attic, women populate every dark corner of Christmas. Who got up at 4 a.m. to put the turkey in the oven? A woman. . . . Who sent the Christmas card describing her eighteenyear-old son’s incarceration as ‘a short break before college?’ A woman. Who remembered to include batteries at the bottom of each stocking? A woman. And who gets credit for pulling it all off? Santa. That’s right. A man.” Rachel Held Evans “There is something about Christmas that requires a rug rat. Little kids make Christmas fun. I wonder if could rent one for the holidays. When I was tiny we would buy a real tree and stay up late drinking hot chocolate and finding just the right place for the special decorations. It seems like my parents gave up the magic when I figured out the Santa lie. Maybe I shouldn’t have told them I knew where the presents really came from. It broke their hearts. Laurie Halse Anderson

“Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” Calvin Coolidge “The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.” George Carlin “Christmas Eve was a night of song that wrapped itself about you like a shawl. But it warmed more than your body. It warmed your heart...filled it, too, with melody that would last forever.” Bess Streeter Aldrich “My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” Bob Hope “In this modern, politically correct society Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, but there must be no mention of the man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a student asked why it was called Christmas.” Ronald Reagan “Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.” Laura Ingalls Wilder “The thing about Christmas is that it tells us that we are never alone. But even more, it tells us that we are always enough.” Craig D. Lounsbrough “What is the spirit of Christmas, you ask? Let me give you the answer in a true story... On a cold day in December, feeling especially warm in my heart for no other reason than it was the holiday season, I walked through the store sporting a big grin on my face. Though most people were far too busy going about their business to notice me, one elderly gentleman in a wheelchair brought his eyes up to meet mine as we neared each other

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers travelling opposite directions. He slowed in passing just long enough to speak to me. “Now that’s a Christmas smile if I ever saw one,” he said. My lips stretched to their limit in response, and I thanked him for the compliment. Then we went our separate ways. But, as I thought about the man and how sweetly he’d touched me, I realized something simply wonderful! In that brief, passing interaction we’d exchanged heartfelt gifts! And that, my friend, is the spirit of Christmas.” Richelle E. Goodrich “Christmas, children, is not a date. It is a state of mind.” Mary Ellen Chase “Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” Norman Vincent Peale “Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” Hamilton Wright Mabie And finally, the actual quote from Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol“ where

Scrooge’s nephew Fred chastises his uncle on his opinion that Christmas is a humbug.... “There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,’ returned the nephew. ‘Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!” Well said Fred!

Healthy Eating TART TATIN (French Apple Tart)

I

t’s Autumn and apple season. Apples are high in fibre and good for your digestion, while being low in fat and calories. If you know anyone with an apple tree, they are usually more than happy to give some away. Use any eating apples, but golden delicious and granny smiths don’t work as well in this recipe. Instead of the usual apple pie, this tart only has pastry on the bottom which makes it healthier! It’s easy to make but you do need a pie dish about 26cm round with sloping sides if you can find one. Ingredients Shortcrust pastry to fit the pie dish (home-made or bought), 150g sugar, 8 dessert apples, 100g butter or margarine. Pre-heat the oven to gas 4. Grease a round dish of 26cm (sloping sided) with oil and shake in 125g sugar so that the bottom and sides of the tin are coated with sugar and in forms an even layer. Peel, core and cut apples into 6 segments. Place apples tightly on top of the sugar in a spiral shape (see pic). Fill in gaps with smaller pieces. Heat the pie

dish on the top of the cooker, reduce the heat when the sugar under the apples is lightly caramalised (when it goes light brown – check by lifting a corner of apple with a knife). Take off the heat, sprinkle the rest of the sugar and flake butter or marg on top of the apples. Roll out the pastry and cover the apples, tucking in at the edges. Pierce the pastry with a fork all over. Cook for 20 minutes. When it’s cooled a bit, turn it upside down onto a plate. Serve with custard, vegan cream, single cream or ice-cream. ‘Healthy Eating’ courtesy of Sue Lorrimer.

Football

IT’S LOOKING GREAT FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON!

W

e’ve been saying all season that a couple of consecutive wins make all the difference in the Championship. But - having just achieved that laudable achievement with what can only be described as two fairly run-of-the-mill victories against Wigan and Brentford either side of the international break - our position in second place isn’t in any way conclusive. The current gap at the time of writing between us and Aitor Karanka’s Forest in seventh is a mere four points, so while two consecutive wins have elevated us into second place, a couple of poor performances will see us drop dramatically down the league. But surely that’s what the Championship is all about. Anybody can beat anybody, you can very rarely forecast even four results on any Saturday (I know that because I try every week and consistently lose money) and forecasting who’s going to win it at this stage is virtually impossible. Not surprisingly, the Championship sits comfortably among the top four supported leagues in Europe with total attendances in 2016/2017 of over 11 million ranking higher than Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A and France’s Ligue 1. And so it should, because many of its teams have recently spent considerable time in the Premiership - easily football’s biggest financial attraction - and without exception have a collective ambition to return to that promised land of wealth and prospective glory. ‘Boro is not only no exception to that hope but

is a club with probably more right than many of the others to achieve that aim. So let’s look at whether December is going to improve or diminish our chances of entering 2019 in a great position. At the time of writing we are looking forward to another potentially successful trip to Preston following the excellent Carabao cup win by what can only be described as a reserve team earlier in the season. That’s followed by an eagerly anticipated home game against Aston Villa who were something of a nemesis in our ambition to be promoted last season. Up after that is the enigma of Blackburn Rovers who started the season really well after their promotion but have slumped a bit more recently. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of that game is that it sees the return of ‘Captain Fantastic’ Tony Mowbray who sadly didn’t quite make it on his return to ‘Boro as manager. Two away games at QPR and Reading see us in London twice in a week, but their performances to date suggest we could reach Christmas without having to ask Santa Claus for any kind of favours in our search for promotion glory. But does that mean that Tony Pulis will be content with his squad or will he still want to improve it with the two wide players, a left back cover for George Friend and another goal scorer he has already indicated are his top requirements? I’m not so sure, because the fact that Tavernier not only started the

PAGE 28 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

Solution

Brentford game but also scored what proved to be the winning goal suggests Pulis should put more trust in his younger stars. And that he also brought Lewis Wing on towards the end suggests he also has faith in the kid who was playing non league football just a year ago. But, as I remarked last month, that’s why Tony Pulis is being paid a considerable amount of money. He has to work it all out for himself and you really have to accept that in view of what he has achieved in his role to date we should let him get on with it and support him every step of the way. He has consistently praised the support of the ‘Boro faithful and I agree with him that the number of fans who travel away and the velocity of their support should be enthusiastically applauded. More than anyone, they should be rewarded with the ultimate prize at the end of the season because their amazing support thoroughly deserves it. So here’s to a great second half of what is proving to be a potentially rewarding season, and in the meantime have a great Christmas and a very, very successful New Year!
