Sow sweet pea seeds outside or plant out those you have grown over winter. Put the climbing structure, either a wigwam or frame with netting, in place. Put two seeds or plants to each cane. If you have a light soil you can start making sowings of hardy annuals. Sow into straight seed drills as this makes it easier to take out any weeds that will grow. Once the flowers are in bloom you will not be able to see the rows. Put in supports for perennials to grow through before they become too large. Use frames sold for this purpose and once the plants mature they will be hidden by the foliage. The more tender plants that had their stems left on to protect the crowns such as fuchsias and penstemons can now be pruned taking care not to cut out any new growth. Keep dead heading daffodils and tulips taking off only the flower and seed head. Buy seedlings and plug plants ready to grow on for your hanging baskets and containers. On warm days open the vents and doors of your greenhouse and damp down the floor. Start to feed fish in the ornamental pond.
Lawns
This is the best month to apply weed killer or moss killer. Apply a spring fertilizer to help green up your lawn after the winter. Mow the grass as necessary but don’t put the clippings on the compost after applying weed killer.

Fruit and Vegetables
The blossom of peach, nectarine and apricot trees should be protected from frost with a cover of fleece. Remove it in the daytime to allow insects to pollinate. Fans, cordons and espalier fruit trees should now be pruned. Plum and cherry trees can be pruned now the threat of getting silver leaf disease has gone. Begin feeding citrus plants with a special citrus food. Second early potatoes can be planted at the start of the month and maincrop ones at the end of the month and potatoes already planted will not need earthing up. Carry on with successional sowings of salad crops, etc so that you do not have a glut of vegetables that cannot be frozen. Thin out seedlings as soon as they are big enough. Plant onion sets, shallot and garlic if not done last month. Buy young plants of herbs and keep them on the kitchen window sill or a cool greenhouse until it is warm enough to plant outside. A few pots of herbs outside the kitchen door is always welcome.
Wildlife
Make your wildlife pond more friendly by adding native planting such as marsh marigold as close to the edge as possible and making one end have a very shallow entry into the water so any creatures can climb in and out. Keep feeding the birds but only with small sized food so the mother does not take large pieces back to the fledglings. Hedgehogs will be coming out of hibernation so extra food, other slugs, may be needed by them as all their fat reserves will have been used up over the winter. If you want to attract butterflies put in some butterfly attracting plants such as buddleia, honesty or even nettles.

f you want to make it in life it’s pretty inevitable that you will – from time to time – have to undergo the rigours of a job or promotion interview. It’s a nerve wracking experience with so much at stake but we’ve found a few instances of situations in which they can be quite funny. Do any of these sound familiar?
The boss said to one of his really useless employees ‘I know you shouldn’t mix business with pleasure but I’m going to. You’re fired!’ A prospective employee asked the job applicant at his interview ‘Do you think you can handle a variety of work?’ ‘Blimey,’ said the applicant, ‘I ought to. I’ve had eight different jobs in the last four months.’
Harry goes for a job interview and sitting next to him is a well spoken chap wearing a Cambridge University tie. After a moment the chap notices that Harry isn’t particularly well dressed save for the Cambridge University tie he is also wearing. ‘I say,’ said the well spoken man, ‘I see you’re wearing a Cambridge University tie as well.’ ‘Yup,’ replied Harry. ‘Well’ said the other, ‘if you don’t mind me saying so you don’t look like the sort of chap who’d have gone to Cambridge. What did you do there?’ ‘I bought a tie,’ said Harry. An executive is interviewing a nervous young woman for a job in his company and decided to use a fairly modern technique of finding out more about her way of thinking. ‘Tell me,’ he said, ‘If you could have a conversation with someone, living or dead, who would it be?’ The woman responds ‘The Living One.’
The interviewer said to the job applicant. ‘You will start at £100 per week but in six months time that rises to £130.’ ‘OK,’ said the applicant, ‘I’ll come back in six months.’ Employer to job applicant: ‘What I’m looking for in this position is someone who is really responsible.’ ‘That’s me, said the applicant. ‘In my last job every time anything went wrong everybody pointed at me and said ‘He’s responsible!’

An applicant was filling out the job application and he came to the question ‘Have you ever been arrested?’ He answered ‘No’ and moved on to the next question not realising it was the second part of the former question and was only intended for those who had answered in the affirmative. The question was ‘Why?’ The applicant wrote ‘Never got caught.’ A young lady worked for Princess Anne for a while but finally resigned. ‘Why on earth did you leave that lovely job?’ asked her mother. ‘Because,’ said the girl, ‘it didn’t matter how good I was or how hard I worked, they were never going to make me Princess Anne!’ A young man goes for an interview and is asked what sort of employment package he’s looking for. ‘Well,’ he said ‘I’d like £50,000 pounds a year, six weeks holiday and a Jaguar for a Company Car.’ ‘OK,’ said the interviewer, ‘how does this sound? We’ll give you £60,000 a year rising to £70,000 after the first year. Eight weeks holiday, you get your own secretary and PA and we promote you to Board level after two years.’ ‘Wow,’ said the young man, ‘You have to be joking.’ ‘I am,’ said the interviewer,’ ‘but you started it! An applicant is being interviewed for a position at a top medical School. ‘Tell me,’ enquires the interviewer, ‘where do you expect to be in ten years time from now?’ ‘Let’s see,’ says the applicant, ‘it’s Wednesday afternoon so I expect I’ll be on the Golf Course.’

RED VELVET CAKE CAKE INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 cups flour 2 cups sugar 1 Tablespoon cocoa 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil 1 cup buttermilk 1 Tablespoon vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 oz red food colouring
ingredients (oil, buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla and food colouring).
METHOD
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease and flour two eight inch cake pans. Lightly stir eggs in a medium bowl with a wire whisk. Stir in remaining liquid
Whisk until blended. Set aside. In a separate large bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, and baking soda). Stir really well with another whisk. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients bowl, with a hand-mixer mix on medium-high speed for one minute or until completely combined. Pour into cake pans, and then lightly drop cake pans on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles.
After about 10 minutes, remove cakes from pans and let cool completely on a wire rack.

SORRY TONY, BUT YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO GO!

braham Lincoln’s assertion that “You can please some of the people all of the time; you can please all of the people some of the time; but you can never please all of the people all of the time” has never been better demonstrated than by Tony Pulis’s comparatively short spell as ‘Boro boss. That was mainly because he arrived with the contrasting reputation of a man who would achieve a number of good things for the club but would actually do it with the type of football nobody wants to see. I must admit when he first arrived I was one of the people inclined to see the good points of that concept and felt he would stabilise the defence and midfield, make us hard to beat and would, as he has done in the past, achieve success by playing on the break to win games by very small margins To an extent that has proved to be a fairly accurate description of what we have seen over his eighteen month tenure and to his credit would have now seen us in an excellent position in the table but for one disturbing fact. We have no fewer than five supposedly good - and certainly expensive strikers, yet none of them are actually able to put the ball in the net on a consistent basis. That’s why, in Pulis’s defence, you could say that there have been many, many opportunities created that have been wasted through a lack of composure, wayward shooting and poor decision making On the other hand, though, you only have to look at his team selection for the Aston Villa game to see there are other inherent problems with his management style. After two home defeats that really should have been wins and an eminently winnable away draw against lowly Wigan it
was surely a must-win game, yet he played five across the back, four mainly defensive-minded midfielders and a lone striker who has so far seen only six goals scored from nineteen starts. That Jordan Hugill spent most of that particular game completely isolated up front is also tangible evidence of the problems that ultra defensive tactics create. Having seen the team selection, it was a unanimous declaration among the away support around me that the game was lost before it had kicked off and so it disastrously proved! Perhaps the worst aspect of it was that unlike in the two previous games where we had created chances that our strikers missed, against Villa there were simply no chances created! That’s why, I’m afraid, Pulis has to go. What Abraham Lincoln didn’t say was that you can actually reach a point where you upset all of the people all of the time and it would seem that Tony Pulis has now achieved that somewhat dubious recognition. We’ve heard on many occasions that the only way to achieve success at a football club is to have everybody - and that certainly includes the fans - working together in complete harmony but since that looks like an impossible situation as long as Pulis remains Steve Gibson has little choice. His contract is fortunately up at the end of the season and there is absolutely no argument for extending it. The biggest difficulty - as always - is who will replace him. In the past, Steve Gibson has tended to veer away from the merry-go-round of supposedly tried and trusted names and certainly with the likes of Brian Robson, Steve McLaren and Aitor Karanka the policy paid strong dividends during their occupation of the post. And who knows how good things might have become had he not got rid of Gareth Southgate when he did.

Conversely, the ‘tried and trusted’ Gordon Strachan, Garry Monk and now Tony Pulis have proved to be huge mistakes There’s a lot of talk around the Riverside at the moment that Jonathan Woodgate is being considered as the next incumbent but no indication of that has been suggested from within the club, so it’s pure conjecture. Perhaps the advantage of such a choice would be that we would have a manager who would develop the undoubted talent we have already in the club rather than pay lip service to the quality of our youngsters without really giving them the chance. Lewis Wing, for instance, has had to force his way into the squad with the season’s most consistent performances, while Marcus Tavernier has done exceptionally well in the limited opportunities he’s been given but those opportunities have nevertheless remained limited. I think it’s fairly safe to say that not only have we missed out on automatic promotion but our season-long stay in the play-off places also looks in real jeopardy, especially with - at the time of writing - Norwich up next. April will be an interesting month but I can’t say with any conviction that it has the look of a successful one. Next season can’t come quickly enough!
