Continue to dead head any remaining daffodils and tulips but do not take off the foliage until it is brown and then feed with a liquid fertilizer. Shade the greenhouse and damp down the floors on hot days after opening vents and doors. Prune spring flowering shrubs and clematis Montana. Fruit and Vegetables

Put nets over any fruits that are about to ripen to stop the birds eating them. Remove any strawberry runners so the plants put all their energy into producing fruit. If a late frost is forecast cover stone fruits with a fleece at night but remove in the morning so that pollinating insects have free access. Make sure that any fruit trained against a wall or fence receive enough water during the fruit development stage. Plants can be in a rain shadow when up against a tall structure and will need extra watering. To keep the codling moth from your apple trees hang pheromone traps amongst the trees. Continue with successional sowings of salad crops. Sow the seeds of Runner and French beans into prepared rows outside or train then up wigwams if you have less room. If you have not grown your own vegetables from seed you can buy small plug plants cheaply now and fill your garden with these. If you don’t have a dedicated vegetable bed there are many attractive vegetables such as lollo rosso lettuce, swiss chard and even runner beans that look really good placed between flowering plants as they did in the old days to make a real cottage garden.

Wildlife

Be careful when cutting hedges that there is not a bird’s nest in there being used at the moment. If there is leave the hedge uncut until the fledglings have flown the nest. Neither the birds nor the hedge will suffer. Keep the bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water. Keep feeding the birds but make sure there are no large pieces that the mothers could take back to the chicks and choke them. If you would like to attract the summer visiting birds such as swifts and housemartins you can buy special nesting boxes to put up in the garden. Swallows will make their own nests.

Recipe

HOMEMADE OREO COOKIES EQUIPMENT & INGREDIENTS Baking trays, baking parchment, cookie cutter, electric mix, rolling pin, disposable icing bag (or knife) and bowls. FOR THE BISCUIT: 210g plain flour 75g cocoa powder 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch salt 80g butter, melted and cooled slightly 100g dark brown sugar 1 egg FOR THE BUTTERCREAM: 80g butter 200g icing sugar

50g caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla powder 1 tsp milk

METHOD In one bowl mix the flour, cocoa, bicarbonate of soda and salt. In another bowl mix the melted butter, sugar and egg. Pour the liquid mix into the dry mix and form a dough. Place dough between two pieces of baking parchment and roll out (you might want to do this in halves or thirds). Cut out shapes using a 2 inch diameter circle but make whatever size and shape you want.

Place shapes on sheets of baking parchment on trays and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Pre-heat oven to 170°C or 150°C fan. Bake the biscuits for 7-10 minutes (depending on size). To make the buttercream use an electric mixer if possible. Beat the butter until fluffy. Add both sugars and vanilla and beat more. Add the milk. This makes it a bit more pliable for sandwiching. Using a disposable icing bag (or a knife) pipe the cream in a circle on the edge of the biscuit. Use another biscuit to sandwich together.

END OF TERM REPORT - COULD DO MUCH BETTER WHATEVER HAPPENS

ome things in life are inevitable even though we desperately hope they’ll never happen. In the 1973/74 season ‘Boro won the league by a record 15 points (a statistic that will never be beaten because in those days it was only two points for a win) and I travelled down to Nottingham Forest hoping to see ‘Boro’s current 10 match unbeaten run be maintained. Duncan Mackenzie put paid to that with four goals in a 5-1 defeat. Since that day we have met Forest 47 times and only won 6 so in a season in which the only thing that has been consistent about ‘Boro has been their inconsistency a win for Forest was the most predictable result of the Easter Monday fixtures. And so it sadly proved. Six consecutive defeats during a dismal March had been followed by three consecutive wins - albeit pretty unconvincing ones - so we could probably be forgiven for thinking we’d turned the corner and were now back in the box seat for the play-off position that up until the end of February had looked a certainty. Now, amazingly and despite that 3-0 surrender to Forest - at the time of writing we are still in with a chance with two games against lowly Reading (H) and Rotherham (A) still to come. If we have any

promotion aspirations neither should be considered too difficult, but this is ‘Boro we are talking about so literally anything can happen. Whatever has happened by the time you read this, however, there is no way the season can be considered any kind of success. It started well enough but since Christmas has tailed off alarmingly with all the previous comments on failure to score goals being the most obvious reason. And anyone who was at the Stoke game could clearly see the reason why. A really good goal following a wonderful pass from Mikel to Howson who followed up with a superb cross to Assombalonga gave us a great platform in only the second minute to go on and improve our goal difference. What actually happened was a drab rearguard action that only worked because Stoke’s finishing was as bad as ours has been all season. The performance was pretty awful and not something any of us wants to see repeated next year. The answer - regardless of what may have happened in those two final games - is to start again with a new manager who at least realises that you can only win games if you score goals. A strong defence is a wonderful attribute but it should never be at the expense of positive attacking play.

Who knows what a different attitude might do for the likes of Fletcher and Assombalonga because after their performances this season I can’t see anyone eager to take them off our hands to enable us to recoup the substantial transfer fees they cost us. Fortunately, Jordan Hugill, and dare I say it Mo Besic are only on loan so their unconvincing services can be dispensed with anyway. And if the miracle happens and we do succeed in the play offs there are very few on the books who would be capable of bridging the enormous gap to the Premier League. The only sensible conclusion is to hope that someone, somewhere can come in and create organisation, excitement and positivity around the first eleven. Season ticket sales have already been good for next season but even hardcore fans will only put up with so much. Things simply have to change! Have a great Summer.
