Put houseplants out in the garden for their ‘summer holiday’. Remember to take them back in during September before any frosts. Once there has been a dry spell, give a coat of colour/preservative to fences, sheds and decking. Rhododendrons, lilacs and hydrangeas can be dead headed but be careful not to cut too far back, merely taking just the blooms. Hoe off any annual weeds but perennial weeds should be dug out making sure you take out all the root. Keep hostas and other tender plants safe from slugs and snails. You can get a slug killer that is not harmful to wildlife or you can use beer traps, crushed egg shells or used coffee grounds. Keep hanging baskets, containers and any newly planted shrubs or perennials well watered. Take time out not only to walk round the garden hopefully every day to keep an eye on everything but most importantly sit and enjoy!
Lawns Mow the lawn more often now, usually at least once a week and reduce the cutting height if the weather is not too hot. If you have any movable features on the

If you have not already weeded and fed the lawn it is still not too late to apply a combined weed and feed. A new lawn should be watered in dry spells to stop the turf from shrinking and failing to knit together and also water seed sown lawns to encourage growth. If you have a lot of grass clippings put them on the compost heap in stages so that the compost does not go slimy.

Place netting supported by raised canes to protect fruit from birds if you don’t yet have a fruit cage. After the June drop of apple trees, if the apples still look too crowded thin them out to give better sized fruits that will ripen all the way round. Keep picking rhubarb so that it does not have a chance to go to seed. Train in the new canes of raspberries and blackberries by tying them in to say the left whilst the older canes are pulled to the right. Early potatoes should be ready to dig now and maincrop ones will need earthing up. Sow more lettuce, radish and beetroot in succession through the month. Train tomato plants as they grow and pinch out the side shoots from cordon grown ones. Run string attached at each end to posts to support broad beans as they grow and pinch out the growing tips to discourage black fly. Keep all vegetable growing areas free from weeds.

Healthy Eating
MINESTRONE SOUP An easy to make Italian soup which is full of veg, but also contains beans for protein and pasta which makes it filling enough for a meal. You can serve it with toasted French stick brushed with a garlic clove and drizzled with olive oil.
RECIPE 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, diced 1 garlic clove crushed 2 celery sticks chopped 1 leek finely sliced 1 carrot, chopped, 1 tin tomatoes 1 pint veg or chicken stock 1 courgette, diced ½ a small cabbage 1 bay leaf 75g tinned haricot beans 75g spaghetti broken into small pieces 1 tablespoon chopped parsley (optional) salt and pepper
Heat the oil in a pan and add the onion, garlic, celery, leek and carrot. Saute on medium heat for 5 minutes until veg are soft. Add the tin of tomatoes, stock, courgette, cabbage, bay leaf and beans. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the broken spaghetti and season with salt and pepper. Stir well and cook until the pasta is soft. Keep stirring to make sure the soup doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Add the parsley. Serve with grated cheese or parmesan and French stick. Tip: This soup improved in flavour when its made in advance and reheated so you can make it and keep in in the fridge for a day or two.

THE START OF ANOTHER NEW CHAPTER
T
he inevitable has happened and, thankfully, Tony Pulis has departed. There was a substantial degree of inevitability in the decision because he had alienated most of the crowd and the discomfort that would have been felt in facing the new season with him still at the helm would have reverberated right across Teesside. The unfortunate truth is that a manager who sets his stall out every week to avoid defeat will also find regular victories hard to come by and it’s been fairly obvious since his astonishing announcement that his team was not good enough for a top two place that that was his only ambition. But that’s now in the past and at the time of writing we are waiting for any snippet of news to emerge from the Riverside about the direction the club will take. The same old names have been bandied about by the press but the worst thing that Steve Gibson could possibly do would be to choose any of the managers who have already tried and are now out of work because they have failed – in many cases more than once! In the past his biggest successes have involved new, exciting names who have had considerable recent experience of modern football but who haven’t picked up the bad habits that accompany ‘experienced’ managers. And it’s a little
ironic that while the main exponents of that concept Bryan Robson, Steve McLaren and Aitor Karanka were big successes for us they quickly joined the ranks of the unsuccessful once they left Middlesbrough. Two of the names that fall into the new, exciting and untried category are Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Reiziger - both ex ‘Boro players who fit the bill as far as qualifications are concerned but more importantly they already know the club well and will be aware of what is required to create a good relationship with the crowd. That is surely an important aspect of any decision that is to be made. In my opinion Woodgate remains – despite considerable competition – the best ‘Boro centre half I’ve had the pleasure to watch at the Riverside and a man whose career would have been positively sensational but for the injuries he sustained. His ability, however, could never be doubted and his presence on the field and his complete control when with the ball showed he has a wonderfully natural football brain. Reiziger on the other hand has been an integral part of the re-emergence of Ajax’s international success and the brilliant attacking football they produced in this year’s European Champions League so once again there is potential there. As I’ve said before, though, it’s now down

to Steve Gibson and let’s hope in the next couple of weeks he makes a decision that will please everybody. There is obviously a financial restraint on whoever takes over but as Tony Pulis mentioned on every possible occasion we are in a much better financial situation now than we have been more recently and with a further number of high earners set to depart we may even get to see the true potential that the academy is still producing. Neither Norwich nor Sheffield United spent anywhere near as much as we did over the last couple of seasons which is once again proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune to create a promotion winning team. Astute recruitment and clever management are much more important. We can only wait and see what happens next but we really do have to continue to trust Steve Gibson to get it right. Here’s hoping!
