Regularly pick courgettes to prevent them from becoming marrows. Pick peas and beans as soon as they are ready or they will become tough and stringy later. Lift and use over wintered onions. Sow spring cabbage and winter salad crop seeds.

Wildlife Top up bird feeders and tables regularly but avoid chunky food that could be taken back to fledglings and choke them and keep the bird bath topped up with fresh water. Plant marigolds around the vegetable garden to attract hoverflies and grow more plants that have single flowers rather then doubles as these seem to attract insects better. Don’t deadhead roses that produce hips as these will be a valuable food source later on in the season.

s a young reporter I used to have to sit in a variety of magistrate’s courts for days on end waiting for something interesting to appear. That it rarely did probably accounted for my total disillusionment with the profession but having discovered the following word for word accounts of things that have genuinely taken place in American Court Rooms I think my time would have been much better spent in the States. These are from a book called ‘Disorder in the American Courts,’ and are statements people actually made in court, word for word. How the American court reporters remained calm while these exchanges were taking place is beyond me. I hope you appreciate them as much as I did! ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning? WITNESS: He said, ‘Where am I, Cathy?’ ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you? WITNESS: My name is Susan! ATTORNEY AT A CAR ACCIDENT HEARING: What gear were you in at the moment of the impact? WITNESS: Gucci sweats and Reeboks. ATTORNEY: Are you sexually active? FEMALE WITNESS: No, I just lie there. MOROCCAN ORANGE & ALMOND CAKE This is a nice cake recipe for anyone who is gluten intolerant. You can buy ingredients such as semolina, fine cornmeal and cardamom pods from Indian grocery stores. The ground almonds add protein, fibre and healthy fats. The oranges contain vitamin C and minerals. INGREDIENTS: 1 orange, 115g/4oz butter or marg (softened), 115g/4oz caster sugar, 2 eggs, 175g/6oz semolina or fine cornmeal, 100g/3 ½ oz ground almonds, 1 ½ tsp gluten-free baking powder, icing sugar for dusting. Syrup: 300ml/10floz orange juice, 2 ½ oz caster sugar, 8 cardamom pods crushed. Grate the rind from the orange, reserving some for decoration and squeeze the juice from one half. Place butter/marg, orange rind and caster sugar in a bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. In a separate bowl, mix the semolina/cornmeal, ground almonds and baking powder then fold into the creamed mixture with the juice from half the orange. Spoon the batter into a greased and baselined 20cm/8-inch cake tin and bake in a preheated oven 18 C/350 F Gas Mark 4, for 30-40 minutes, until well risen and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool the cake in the tin for 10 minutes.

To make the syrup, put orange juice, sugar and cardamom pods in a pan over low heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to the boil and simmer for 4 minutes or until syrupy. Turn the cake out into a deep serving dish. Use a skewer to make holes all over the surface of the warm cake. Strain the syrup into a separate bowl and spoon three quarters of it over the cake then stand for 30 minutes. Dust with icing sugar and serve with the remaining syrup drizzled around and Greek-style yogurt, decorate with the reserved orange rind. ‘Healthy Eating’ courtesy of Sue Lorrimer.

THE MIDDLESBROUGH WAY - THE PROMISED NEW IDENTITY THAT FANS SHOULD FEEL EXCITED ABOUT

here can be few football fans who wouldn’t be thrilled to hear the following quote from their new manager... “I want to preside over a team that plays attacking football with a highenergy pressing style. I want players to take risks when they have the ball and work their socks off to regain possession when they do not. I want a clear pathway from the Academy to the first team and will promote youth whenever I can.” Jonathan Woodgate spoke those words at his first press conference and they are ideals that many of the people around me in the West Stand have voiced vociferously as the way things should have been throughout the Pulis reign but very definitely weren’t. Many of us longed to see more adventurous football where at least if we didn’t win we’d given it a really good go, but we were constantly disappointed at the lack of any form of adventure or excitement. Jonathan Woodgate’s appointment has therefore been welcomed by those fans who see him as ‘one of us’ and a man who loves the club as much as we do. That’s why I simply don’t understand some of the comments that social media has aired from people who are obviously envious that a local lad has been given such a

great opportunity. Even Robbie Mustoe in a recent interview was adamant that Steve Gibson should have gone for a more experienced manager. Like who, Robbie? Tony Pulis, Gordon Strachan or Garry Monk. I don’t think so! No, we have instead a team who have all done it at the highest level but have not developed the fear that accompanies these ‘experienced managers’ who have already tasted both failure and the sack and are too frightened to experiment and adapt in case the same happens again. In Jonathan Woodgate, Robbie Keane and Danny Coyne we have instead a young team with fresh ideas and a determination to provide both entertainment and success for ‘Boro fans to enjoy and support. There are no guarantees, of course, and the Championship remains an absolute minefield for every manager, not just the new and inexperienced ones. But we must give them every chance and every ‘Boro fan worthy of the name should back them not only with their full support but also a degree of patience while the players adapt to what will thankfully be a completely different approach to last year’s boring, defensive and ultimately unsuccessful playing style.

That this new approach is to be reflected throughout the club with every team from the under fifteens upwards destined to play a similar style so that ‘The Middlesbrough Way’ will come to mean something and give all our teams a recognisable identity is to be applauded. Ironically, it’s also the way Gareth Southgate is organising the England setup so that whoever is promoted is already familiar with the style of play expected of them. As for the knockers on social media, you are not fans so keep your stupid and pessimistic comments to yourself until the time when you will hopefully have to admit you were wrong and start to offer the kind of support the team and management deserve. I, for one, can only wait with enormous excitement for the start of the new season. It certainly won’t be dull!
