ut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example) They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.
Clean out the greenhouse Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat
at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!
Drain and lag... Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.
Prepare your soil for next year For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below

Planting Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed.

Rake fallen leaves Fallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (two in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and free home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

DIABETES AND DIET
A
s more people are diagnosed with diabetes, information on how to self-manage and improve symptoms is useful to be able to take things into your own hands. This month we’ll look at diet: as well as weight loss, medication, exercise and good sleep, diet is an important part of controlling your diabetes. If you eat too much high GI foods, they break down quickly and cause blood glucose levels to rise sharply ‘spike’. Examples of high GI foods are white bread, sweetened drinks, biscuits, pastries and potatoes. Low GI foods break down more slowly and less likely to cause a rapid increase in blood glucose, also they tend to be healthier. Examples include: wholemeal bread, milk, beans, leafy green vegetables and berries.
Here’s a recipe that can be made quickly and easily – beans are high in fibre and good for protein, tomates are a great source of vitamins C and A and rich in lycopene which is an antioxidant (body absorbs this better with cooked tomatoes):
Quick Bean Chilli Ingredients: 1 tablespoon of oil, 1 large onion, 2 stalks celery, 1 clove garlic, chilli powder or flakes (put in ½ - 1 tsp depending on heat you want), 1 red and 1 yellow pepper, 2 small courgettes or l large one, 1 tin low sodium tomatoes, 1 dessert spoon tomato puree, 2 tsp veg stock power or a cube, tin kidney beans, water. Method: Fry the onion, garlic and celery for 5 minutes over a medium heat.

Add the chilli and cook 30 seconds. Chop peppers and courgettes and fry for 3-4 minutes. Add tomatoes, stock and half pint of water. Add tomato puree. Bring to boil then lower heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Add beans and cook for 5 minutes.
Serve with rice & green veg like kale or broccoli. Tip: If you have time, leave it to cook longer as this improves the flavour. You can add a bit more water if you want but the chilli is supposed to be not too watery. Make double the amount and freeze.

IT’S GOING TO BE TOUGH - BUT LIFE’S A CIRCLE
I
n last month’s piece I said that this was to be a season of development and, despite bemoaning the unfortunate refereeing decisions that had cost us points, I nevertheless came to the conclusion that the strength in depth of the squad wasn’t sufficient to hope for anything this season other than survival. Due to deadlines I am writing this having just returned from something of a nightmare journey from Huddersfield which was considerably truncated by the closure of three exits on the M1 near Pontefract. That did not, however, douse my spirits too much because I thought that following on from a good display against West Brom in which we were unlucky to come away pointless, the performance at Huddersfield maintained that improvement and we actually deserved all three points. Sadly, the old problems again reared their heads because despite having the best three chances of the game we failed to put any of them away. Poor finishing and an excellent save from Huddersfield’s goalkeeper Schofield deprived us of our due desserts.
My previous observation about strength in depth was confirmed to an extent when at the end of the game no fewer than five graduates from the academy were on the field. That they all performed admirably was a real bonus and it was a great night for Aynsley Pears to keep a clean sheet on his first team debut. In important league games, though, the money that was spent over the last couple of seasons should have ensured that we had seasoned and experienced players in every position but Jonathan Woodgate has obviously got selection problems in a number of areas. Fulham are up next, and they look a different kettle of fish to Huddersfield so it will be very interesting to see how we perform against them. I have to also say - again - that the crowd in the ‘Boro end were both enthusiastic and vociferous and that’s always a huge bonus for the players. Let’s hope that can be maintained throughout the next six months. So at this still very early stage in the season it looks as though we are going to have it pretty tough and it’s already

been widely accepted that the money for January recruitment will be very limited. That means the pre-ordained season of development will be inevitable. As long as the younger players can continue to improve on strength, fitness and technique, though, that seems to be the future for the time being. But life is most certainly a giant circle and teams now performing at the very highest level have been in the same position we are in at the moment. It’s not that many years since Manchester City, for instance, were playing at a much lower level. Not every team, however, can attract the investment that they currently enjoy. But I feel quite sure we can come again and I sincerely hope Jonathan Woodgate is given the time to get things right. Changing managers under the current circumstances would be a negative move.
