apanese Acers, Birches and Vines will need pruning before Christmas to avoid the bleeding of the sap from the cut stems. Choose to do this on a day without frosts, so as to protect the plant as much as possible.
and improve next years crop. Prevent any disease getting into your tree by ensuring your saw and secateurs are sharp and clean. Leave cordons and espaliers, they should be pruned in late summer.
Root crops such as parsnips, leeks, kale, winter cabbages and sprouts should be harvested this month, ready for use with your Christmas lunch.
Ensure outside plumbing is well insulated, even if not in use, including outside taps, ponds and drainpipes. Switch off and drain any water attachments, store them indoors if at all possible.
Apply a dry mulch around borderlinehardy plants such as Agapanthus, Hedychium and Melianthus to protect the crown from the winter frosts and snow.
If you have fish in your pond, make sure they have air holes if the water freezes over. A rubber ball left to float should prevent the water from freezing over.
Start to reduce the amount of water you are giving to your houseplants. They require less water through the winter months, but keep an eye on any which are located near any sources of heat, such as radiators and heaters as these are prone to dry out more.
Unused terracotta pots need protection. Bring them indoors or store them in your shed until spring. If you have some in use, wrap them in bubblewrap or newspaper to help protect them from the damaging frosts.
Containter-grown herbs can be brought inside, such as chives, mint and basil. They will do best on a sunny windowsill. Apple and Pear trees can be pruned in December to maintain healthy growth
Bird feeders should be kept topped up with fresh seeds and nuts throughout the winter months. Bird baths will also need to be topped up during winter. A kettle of water in the morning will ensure a nonfrozen bird bath through most of the day.

December is the perfect time to dig heavy soils as the winter frosts will help to break down any newly turned lumps, leaving you with more manageable soil next season. Flamboyant summer displays may well be over, but there is no reason why your garden cannot look just as spectacular during December. Cornus are invaluable for winter interest with their striking winter stems and shoots.

Humour THE TRUE FACTS ABOUT MEN AND WOMEN’S EVOLUTION Speaking recently to my grandson about life in general and how strangely different people can be, I got to thinking about the real differences between not just people in general, but men and women in particular. I therefore began to put together a number of great examples of that concept and I’d like to share them with you! A little girl - keen to know how she came to be on the earth - asked her mummy ‘Where did people come from?’‘Well,’ said her mummy, ‘first God created a man and a woman and then they had children. Then those children grew up and had children of their own and so on and so on and that’s how the world has so many people, including you.’ She then went and asked her daddy how she came to be and his answer was slightly different. ‘Well,’ he said, ‘First God created monkeys and eventually over a period of time those monkeys evolved into people and that’s how we came to be on the earth.’ Later, they were all sitting at the dinner table and the little girl said to her mummy ‘Mummy, you told me a fib. Daddy said people came from monkeys.’ ‘No dear,’ answered her mummy. ‘No one told you any lies. Daddy was talking about his family and I was talking about mine!’ Now Friday nights are traditionally the nights when the girls get together and the boys get together and sit in pubs discussing their partners. From the women’s point of view their attitude to men can be summed up by some of the following observations... ‘Men are like blenders.... you know you need one, but you’re never quite sure why.’ ‘Men are like mascara. They usually run at the first signs of emotion.’ ‘Men are like bank accounts.... without a lot of
money they don’t generate much interest.’ ‘Men are like horoscopes. They tell you what to do but they are usually wrong.’ ‘Men are like popcorn. They can satisfy you but only for a little while.’ ‘Men’s brains are like the modern prison system - not enough cells!’ But we have to give the men the chance to get their own back. Here they come...... ‘We’ll never understand women. They can pour boiling hot wax on their upper thigh, let it cool, then tear it off, ripping the hair out by the root. And yet they’re still afraid of a little spider!’ In the beginning, God created the earth and rested. Then God created man and rested. Then God created women. Since then neither God nor man has rested. Two men were admiring a famous actress, but one of them said ‘Yeah, but if you take away her beautiful hair, her great figure, her wonderful features and her lovely personality, what are you left with? ‘My wife,’ said his friend. It’s a fact of nature that women live longer than men. We reckon that’s because they don’t have wives! It’s a woman’s fault that men tell her lies. She asks too many damn questions. Modern women put on wigs, fake eyelashes, false fingernails, a load of assorted make-up, living bras, various pads and have a multitude of plastic surgeries yet still complain they can’t find a ‘real man.’ My wife is as beautiful today as the day I married her. It just takes her about half an hour in front of the mirror to get there! And the main difference between men and women? Few women admit their age. Even fewer men actually act it!

Christmas
SPECIAL THOUGHTS FOR CHRISTMAS
H
ere we are looking at the good feelings that Christmas brings to us all. We’ve found lots of lovely quotes from many different people all associated with the joy that emanates from this most special of seasons and share them with you here. May we also take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year! “The lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.” Garrison Keillor “Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” Eric Severeid “From the baking aisle to the post office line to the wrapping paper bin in the attic, women populate every dark corner of Christmas. Who got up at 4 a.m. to put the turkey in the oven? A woman. . . . Who sent the Christmas card describing her eighteenyear-old son’s incarceration as ‘a short break before college?’ A woman. Who remembered to include batteries at the bottom of each stocking? A woman. And who gets credit for pulling it all off? Santa. That’s right. A man.” Rachel Held Evans “There is something about Christmas that requires a rug rat. Little kids make Christmas fun. I wonder if could rent one for the holidays. When I was tiny we would buy a real tree and stay up late drinking hot chocolate and finding just the right place for the special decorations. It seems like my parents gave up the magic when I figured out the Santa lie. Maybe I shouldn’t have told them I knew where the presents really came from. It broke their hearts. Laurie Halse Anderson “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a
state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” Calvin Coolidge “The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.” George Carlin “Christmas Eve was a night of song that wrapped itself about you like a shawl. But it warmed more than your body. It warmed your heart...filled it, too, with melody that would last forever.” Bess Streeter Aldrich “My idea of Christmas, whether oldfashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” Bob Hope “In this modern, politically correct society Christmas can be celebrated in the school room with pine trees, tinsel and reindeers, but there must be no mention of the man whose birthday is being celebrated. One wonders how a teacher would answer if a student asked why it was called Christmas.” Ronald Reagan “Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime.” Laura Ingalls Wilder “The thing about Christmas is that it tells us that we are never alone. But even more, it tells us that we are always enough.” Craig D. Lounsbrough “What is the spirit of Christmas, you ask? Let me give you the answer in a true story... On a cold day in December, feeling especially warm in my heart for no other reason than it was the holiday season, I walked through the store sporting a big grin on my face. Though most people were far too busy going about their business to notice me, one elderly gentleman in a wheelchair brought his eyes up to meet mine as we neared each other
PAGE 22 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers travelling opposite directions. He slowed in passing just long enough to speak to me. “Now that’s a Christmas smile if I ever saw one,” he said. My lips stretched to their limit in response, and I thanked him for the compliment. Then we went our separate ways. But, as I thought about the man and how sweetly he’d touched me, I realized something simply wonderful! In that brief, passing interaction we’d exchanged heartfelt gifts! And that, my friend, is the spirit of Christmas.” Richelle E. Goodrich “Christmas, children, is not a date. It is a state of mind.” Mary Ellen Chase “Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” Norman Vincent Peale “Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.” Hamilton Wright Mabie And finally, the actual quote from Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol“ where
Scrooge’s nephew Fred chastises his uncle on his opinion that Christmas is a humbug.... “There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,’ returned the nephew. ‘Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!” Well said Fred!

Christmas Recipe
EASY HOME-MADE MINCE PIES
Method: Mix the apple, alcohol and mincemeat. Make the pastry: Cut the margarine into small cubes and put in a bowl. Add the flour and rub into the margarine until it resembles breadcrumbs. Try to bring it together into a ball. If it’s too dry, add a tiny bit of water but you shouldn’t need to (crumbly type pastry that just holds together enough to roll out is best). Heat your oven to Gas Mark 6/200c. Have a 12-hole cake tin ready. Roll out the pastry, use a pastry cutter or something round i.e. a cup to cut out circles that are wider than the cake tin holes. When you have 12, put them into the cake tin. Fill them with mincemeat, put plenty in.
The shops are full of mince pies, but none taste better than home-made ones eaten warm from the oven. The secret with making pastry is not to handle it too much, but if you like, you can use shop-bought shortcrust pastry. Instead of cream, serve with evaporated milk or soy cream which both contain less Next, roll out the rest of the pastry and cholesterol. cut into small rounds (the size of the tin Ingredients: holes). Dampen the edges of the pastry 400g or 1lb jar mincemeat and press the edges of the tops onto the edges of the filled pastry bottoms. Take 1 apple grated a knife and make a slit in the top of each Tablespoon of whisky, port or brandy pie. 200g Margarine (such as Cookeen or Brush the top of the pies with milk or Stork) or butter beaten egg. Cook for 20 minutes. Take out 350g flour of the oven and leave a few minutes to 1 egg or some milk cool then gently take pies out and put on Sugar or icing sugar to sprinkle on top a rack to cool. YET ANOTHER CASE OF ‘WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN!’
H
aving just returned from the Riverside after a game that just about sums up our season so far I can’t remember being so angry after a match. ‘Boro were in total control after just over half an hour when the game was literally handed back to Hull with the most ludicrous and unnecessary challenge we’ve seen at the Riverside for years. I would say ‘what was Marvin Johnson thinking?’ but after a brainless challenge like that it’s patently obvious he has nothing to think with so it’s a superfluous question. Part of the pre-match chat around me was the fact that we’ve had some terrible decisions go against us this year and that includes some of the choices the strikers have made when faced with a number of good chances. But after taking two today in excellent style we looked as if we were finally heading for a really good performance and - even more importantly - a great result. And then that happens.
I have to say that even following the sending off we still looked pretty good up until half time with Hull wary of our two strikers up front and not really changing the direction of the game. Come half time, however, and we return to the field with only one of our strikers and a defensive midfielder in his place. This totally negative decision ensured that Hull became completely aware that we were now going to sit back and defend what we had and the inevitable happened. They gained confidence in every department, attacked at will and scored two goals that never looked remotely likely in the first half. I suppose my only relief at this point is that we didn’t go on to concede a third. It would be easy to feel sorry for Jonathan Woodgate as he had been able to witness all the hard work done during the International break reaping dividends in the first twenty odd minutes only to see it all thrown away. But it’s also hard to forgive the

negativity of the substitution and I therefore feel much more sorry for Ashley Fletcher who took the second goal so very well. But at least we have the chance to put things right against Barnsley on Wednesday night although we have to see the same attacking prowess as today but with considerably more discipline. At least we are now out of the bottom three again - albeit on goal difference - and a win against Barnsley and repeats of the better parts of our most recent performances thereafter should ensure we don’t go back there again this season. It should really be unthinkable.
