In The Garden
I
n frosty weather little can be done in the garden. The ground is too hard to dig or plant and the lawn should not be walked on. Although there is very little work to do, January ushers in the beginning of a new year that is full of promise in the garden. Despite the low temperatures and short daylight hours, there some useful tasks that can be done. If the weather is mild, you can still plant roses and bare rooted shrubs and trees. At this is time of year a heated greenhouse has great appeal, especially when the weather is too cold and wet to work outside. The warmth of a heated cold-frame or greenhouse or even a sunny indoor window enables you to sow annuals that need a long growing season and start of those early vegetable crops. Roots of favourite herbs, can also be lifted and brought indoors, to provide fresh shoots and leaves for winter flavour. Winter digging is necessary for beds and borders that need to be planted in early spring. The earlier this is done the better, allowing time for frosts to act and break down the soil. The longer any rough clods
of soil are exposed to frost, the easier it will be to get a fine tilth in spring. While digging, it is a good idea to work in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost at the same time, thus improving the soil’s texture and richness. If you have planted any trees or shrubs during the winter months, check that they haven’t been lifted by frost. Once lifted, they can rock in the wind and their roots will be slower to get established. Re-firm the plants by pressing down on the surrounding soil with your feet. You may also need to stake any tall or exposed plants to prevent further wind rock. If the surface of water features or a pond has frozen solid, and particularly if it contains fish, break the ice with care. If the ice is very thick, use a little boiling water rather than a hammer, to avoid shock waves which can kill the creatures beneath.
Planning Next Season’s Garden The long winter evenings provide plenty of time to browse through seed catalogues and plan new projects in the garden. Late January to early February is an ideal time to visit garden centres to buy seeds, tubers and bulbs for the coming season. If you are
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers ordering products from a seed catalogue, or over the internet, it should be done as early as possible or they may arrive too late for their proper sowing or planting dates.
Maintain and Check Garden Tools and Equipment Make sure that mechanical equipment such as mowers, rotovators, edgers, strimmers and hedge trimmers are in good working order. If any need repairing or sharpening, take them in for servicing by a professional.
Winter Tasks Any jobs that do not require cementing or painting, such as building or knocking down old sheds, putting up a fence, laying out gravel paths or a terrace or making a rock garden, are best carried out now, while the soil is workable and all the plants are dormant.
Making a Rock Garden This is a good time to make a new rock
garden or improve an old one. It is too early to add any plants yet, but the preparation and construction work can be done now. A good builders’ merchant, nursery or garden centre specialising in garden construction materials should have a range of rocks and will be able to advise you on costs, and how many you are likely to need.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS - THE FIRST THING THAT GETS BROKEN ON JANUARY 1st They say making New Year’s resolutions is something most people do with the absolute intention of keeping them but always find it impossible. But for those who made one and kept it last year we would like to offer our hearty congratulations. For the rest of you (and that includes us) here are a few New Year observations you might like! It’s everybody’s New Year wish to win the lottery. Well if I did I wouldn’t take the publicity, you get too many begging letters. And if they’re anything like the ones I send out I wouldn’t want to know. An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. My brother’s New Year’s resolution is to move out of our parents’ house. You’d think after 49 years he’d try another one. Every New Year’s Day I celebrate making it through another holiday season without killing my relatives. My New Year’s resolution is to get better at pretending to know the words to Auld Lang Syne. New Year’s Eve, when auld acquaintance be forgot (unless those paternity tests come back positive). A New Year resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. This New Year’s Eve I’m going to make a resolution I can keep: I’m not going to diet this year. Women get a little more excited about New Year’s Eve than men do because they have better intentions. But they still drink too much, make a lot of promises they’re not going to keep and the next morning as soon as they wake up they start breaking them. Men just call that a date.
My New Year’s resolution is to eat better, so from now on, I’m going to only date blokes who can afford to take me somewhere other than McDonalds. If you make a New Year’s resolution to eat a healthy diet, and you keep it, you won’t actually live longer, but it will bloody well seem like it. Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to. Usually my main goal at a New Year’s party is to remember who I came with. May you find the strength to write, “Who is this?” to all the strange numbers that text you “Happy New Year!” tonight. My New Year resolution is not to shovel snow. Since I live in Florida I feel pretty good about it. New Year parades have a lot in common with Santa Claus. Nobody is ever awake to see either one of them. This New Year I was going to make a resolution never to be late again, but I didn’t wake up until January 2nd. “Out with the old, in with the new” is a fitting expression for a holiday that is based on vomiting. My New Year’s resolution is to try to remember why I’ve walked into a room. I see no need to make more New Year’s resolutions when the ones already on the books aren’t being kept. My New Year’s resolution is to take all the Christmas lights down by Easter.
And finally, a wish to you all - may all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions. Have a great 2020!

WINTER TYRES ARE THEY WORTH THE BOTHER?
A
s soon as the temperature drops and there are signs of snow and frost a friend of ours books her car in to have winter tyres fitted. I have to admit to having strong reservations about the benefits of that, since this country - and last year was a great example - rarely has enough snow to create the kind of problems that would make the annual investment worthwhile. Or does it? We decided to investigate the pros and cons and are happy to pass on our findings. There’s no doubt it’s a debatable subject and therefore it’s actually worth examining what exactly is a ‘winter tyre’ and what are its benefits? In this country the type of tyre that can safely be used in winter is more accurately classed as a ‘cold weather’ tyre, recognisable by the snowflake symbol.
They are manufactured from a tread rubber compound (high silica content) with a tread pattern specifically designed to retain flexibility in low temperatures (below +7c) and give good braking and traction performance on snow and ice as well as on wet roads in cold conditions. These are produced using a softer compound than the ones we normally use which means that they still provide a grip in those temperatures below 7 degrees centigrade. Our every day tyres are of a harder construction and while that means they soften in higher temperatures and provide a good grip most of the time, once the temperature falls below the magic 7 degrees centigrade they provide less grip on the road. The way the tread patterns differ on the cold weather tyre is that fine grooves are
PAGE 22 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers
cut into each tread block to enable the tyre to improve its bite into snow. But let’s be honest, in recent years we’ve hardly had any snow, so is it worth the expense to furnish your car with a whole new set of tyres just for the odd shower? Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that these tyres are not just built for snow, but create a much safer grip in icy or cold, wet weather and during January and February we tend to get quite of few of those sort of conditions. Let’s also examine the expense involved. If you are using your winter tyres it obviously means your normal tyres are safely tucked up in the garage not being used and therefore not adding to their mileage. That means that both they - and obviously your winter tyres - will last twice as long anyway as they are only used for half the year. The only additional expense, therefore, is the initial cost of the winter tyres and the cost of having them changed twice a year. Why, you might ask, don’t the manufacturers come up with a tyre that can do both? Well, they do, actually, and this is called an ‘all season’ tyre. Its aim is to give you decent grip in all weathers but that would suggest that because it’s not built for specific climatic conditions it can’t possibly offer the best results for whatever the weather throws at you at any given time. That means that it isn’t as good as having two specialist tyres and switching between them from season to season because you are then giving yourself the perfect tyre for the time of year. We don’t really get the kind of extremes other countries have to endure, of course, but there are nevertheless times
throughout the winter when you need all the road grip you can get! It’s really a matter of personal opinion and circumstances, but for anyone who relies on their car with high mileage throughout the year it seems to make sense to give yourselves the safest possible conditions when you’re driving. The fact that winter tyres not only reduce stopping distances in snowy and icy conditions but also help with cornering and avoiding the skidding others cars experience is a pretty good reason why you should perhaps give it serious thought. Whatever your decision, though, do drive carefully this winter and stay safe regardless of the conditions!

CHOCOLATE AND PEAR PUDDING INGREDIENTS Serves about 10 For the chocolate cake: 200 g / 7 oz dark chocolate 225 g / 8 oz unsalted butter 225 g / 8 castor sugar pinch of salt 5 eggs separated. 1 x 23 cm / 9 inch springform cake tin base and sides lined with baking parchment For the poached pears: 4 – 6 firm pears peeled 1 vanilla pod For the mascarpone cream: 2 egg yolks 4 tablespoons castor sugar 150 ml Marsala Wine 2 x 250 g tubs Mascarpone To finish: 85 g / 3 oz grated chocolate 5 tablespoons strong coffee a large glass bowl
METHOD To make the cake: Heat the oven to 150c / 130 fan / gas 2. Melt the chocolate and the butter together
in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Take off the heat and allow to cool. Whisk the sugar and the eggs yolks together until thick, this could take 5 minutes. Fold in the chocolate mixture, using a metal spoon. Put the egg whites and the salt into another bowl and whisk till you get a medium peak, don’t let it go to dry. Fold the egg whites into the chocolate using the metal spoon. Spoon into the baking tin and bake for 1 1/2 hours. It will rise a lot then sink as it cools. Cook the pears: Put the pears and the vanilla pod into a pan that will hold them in a single layer with about 1 litre of water. Gently poach the pears for about 20 minutes until they are tender. Leave to cool in the syrup. For the mascarpone cream: In a bowl over simmering water place the egg yolks the sugar and 6 tablespoons of the marsala. Whisk for 5 minutes until the mixture is thick and leaving a trail. Put the mascarpone into another bowl and beat in 2 tablespoons marsala to loosen. Whisk in the egg mixture a little at a time until smooth. All this can be done the day before you want to serve.

Cut the pears into eighths discarding the core, divide into three portions. Place one portion of pear onto of the cream layer and sprinkle with some of the grated chocolate. Cut the cake in half, it may well break up but don’t worry. It is a very gooey cake. Place one half on top of the pears, and spoon over some of the remaining marsala and a little of the coffee. Now spoon over more cream, top with another portion of pear and a grating of chocolate. Top with the second half of cake, use up any remaining marsala and coffee on the cake. Top with the remaining mascarpone cream, then with the remaining pears. Leave the remaining grated chocolate to once side to use just before serving. Cover with cling film and chill for at least 2 hours or up to 2 days. This pudding is a chocoholics dream - a great dish for a large party.

LET’S ALL HOPE FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2020
I
t’s always difficult to be either positive or negative for the January issue as deadline is the middle of December so it has to be written with no knowledge of events since the draw with Nottingham Forest on December 10th. I am, though (of course) being positive, because despite the number of injuries, suspensions and the already wafer thin squad that Jonathan Woodgate has had to cope with, results and performances over the last two games have given fans an enormous amount of satisfaction. OK, we lost conclusively against an excellent Leeds team that will no doubt win the Championship, but since then a win and a draw have taken us well above the relegation zone. Much of the credit for that must go to Jonathan for having the nerve to introduce the academy youngsters and for their reciprocation in giving performances any manager would dream of. It’s the perfect example of the benefits of having a progressive, locally conscripted academy and a manager
that believes that kids deserve the opportunity to prove they can be relied on. Let’s be honest, that’s what most fans desperately want from their club. Starting the Charlton Athletic game were no fewer than five academy products who all went on to prove their potential as first team players. Hayden Coulson had already shown his class in the first few games before his unfortunate injury. He has, however, returned to the team to show that his earlier performances were not one-offs. He combines an excellent defensive technique with an enthusiastic aim to get up the wing and cross balls into the box that belie his tender years. Perhaps the most difficult thing is to number Dael Fry amongst the up and coming kids because he has been a first team regular for so long that it’s easy to forget he’s still only a very young man. Marcus Tavernier, meanwhile, is another who has featured regularly over the last twelve months but has shown many qualities during that time and continues to show he has a good first team future. The performances of Ainsley Pears since

good of the team. And that is probably the key word in all this – team! From the manager to the academy - and throughout the problems the club is currently facing - it is fairly obvious that they are all in it together as a proper team should be. So whatever happens between my writing this and you reading it, let’s hope that team spirit is maintained and the squad continues to perform to the best of its abilities. It’s a little sad as a lifelong ‘Boro fan that the best I can hope for this season is a middle of the table finish but I care for the club and would love to see our future dictated by like minded people who wear the shirt with pride. I also believe Jonathan Woodgate deserves our support and so I wish him - and everyone involved in the club - a very happy and successful 2020. Happy New Year to you as well!

his introduction at Huddersfield have also been excellent with a number of clean sheets already on his CV. But perhaps the most surprising of the five who started the game against Charlton was teenager Djed Spence. It’s fairly well documented that the youngster can be difficult on occasions but his performance on that day was exemplary and I, for one, hope he continues to show he will gain maturity with every start. To praise the kids is one thing, of course, but credit must also be given to the likes of Johnny Howson who took up an unfamiliar centre back role against Charlton and performed superbly. It’s a good indication that Jonathan Woodgate has the players on his side and that they are happy to not only work for him but to also back up any changes he feels are necessary for the
