In the flower garden Prune your Wisteria now, cutting back summer side-shoots to 2 or 3 buds. Towards the end of the month prune summer-flowering Clematis before active growth Cut back shrubs such as Cornus and Salix cultivars (grown for their colourful winter stems) down to their bases. Cut back the old foliage from ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground. Prune overwintered fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot. Prune Winter Flowering Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) after flowering to encourage new growth for next year’s blooms. Cut back the previous years growth to 5cm from the old wood. Prune winter flowering shrubs such as Mahonia and Viburnum x bodnantense after their colourful display has finished. Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear, to prevent the plants becoming leggy. Remove any faded flowers from your winter pansies to stop them setting seed. This will encourage a flush of new flowers when
the weather warms up. Lift and divide snowdrops still ‘in the green’ if you want to move them or create more plants. If you need to move deciduous trees or shrubs, now is the time to do it provided the soil is not frozen or waterlogged. Plant Lilies and Allium bulbs. Plant bare root roses in a sunny position for spectacular summer colour. Plant fragrant winter flowering shrubs to add interest to borders. Try Daphne, Viburnum x bodnantense, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis x intermedia) and Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox). Hardwood cuttings taken last year may need planting or potting on now. Pot on rooted cuttings of tender perennial plants taken last summer. Look out for Hellebore leaf spot (rounded brown spots on the leaves) and remove any leaves that are affected.
In the vegetable garden Force rhubarb plants for an early crop. Plant new rhubarb crowns now. Mulch perennial vegetables such as Asparagus and Artichokes with well rotted manure or garden compost.

Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks, onions and celeriac under cover now. Prepare vegetable seed beds by removing all weeds and forking in plenty of compost. Cover prepared soil with sheets of black plastic to keep it drier and warmer in preparation for spring planting. If you garden on heavy clay soil but want to make an early start in the garden, build raised beds before the growing season gets under way. The soil will warm up faster and raised beds drain quickly too.

In the fruit garden Cut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new canes, which will fruit in the autumn. Cut the tips of summerfruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports; cut just above a bud. Continue to plant raspberry canes for the coming summer. Prune apple trees and pear trees whilst they’re still dormant. Leave plum trees, cherry trees and apricots until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to Silver Leaf disease. Prune blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework. Currant bushes can also still be planted between now and the spring. Protect the blossoms of apricots, peaches and nectarines. These stone fruit trees can also be planted now. Mulch fruit trees with well rotted manure or garden compost taking care not to mound mulch up around the trunk.

Coffee Break Humour Here’s a few stories that have reached us recently to help you pass the time on your coffee break. Enjoy! During a lull at a White House dinner, Melania Trump leaned over to chat with Secretary of State, Tillerson. “I bought Donald a parrot for his birthday,” she said. “That bird is so smart, Donald has already taught him to say over two hundred words!” “Very impressive,” said Tillerson, “but, you do realize he just speaks the words. He doesn’t really understand what they all mean.” “Oh, I know,” replied Melania, “but neither does the parrot.” We were having a discussion on what our parents did with their time before the Internet with Facebook, Twitter and You Tube. ‘I don’t know,’ said one of the lads, ‘and I’ve asked my eighteen brothers and sisters and they don’t know either!’
Bill bought his beautiful blonde wife, Sherry, her first mobile phone for their wedding anniversary. Sherry loved the gift, and watched intently as Bill explained all the features on the phone. The next day, as Sherry is having her hair done, her phone rings. It’s Bill. “Hi Hon,” he says. “How do you like your new phone?” “I just love it. It’s so small and your voice is clear as a bell, but there’s one thing I don’t understand. How did you know I was at the beauty parlour?” It may not be the total answer to the meaning of life but these wonderful descriptions of people’s beliefs and attitudes certainly make you think.... Once, in a small village, all the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered but only one little boy brought an umbrella. That’s FAITH. When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That’s TRUST.
A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was: “Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?” The survey was a huge failure. In Africa they didn’t know what “food” meant. In Eastern Europe they didn’t know what “honest” meant. In Western Europe they didn’t know what “shortage” meant. In China they didn’t know what “opinion” meant. In the Middle East they didn’t know what “solution” meant. In South America they didn’t know what “please” meant. And in the USA they didn’t know what “the rest of the world” meant.
Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up. That’s HOPE.
A friend of ours firmly believes that politicians are just like nappies. They should be changed regularly - and for the same reason!

WONDERFUL OBSERVATIONS OF ST VALENTINE’S DAY
T
here are many ways to appreciate and enjoy St Valentine’s Day, given that it’s theoretically the most romantic day of the year. Sadly, however, some people look on it as a bit of a challenge and find it hard to show their true feelings. To help them we’ve put together some alternative observations on the big day! Jim asked his friend Tony - who was a bit of a chauvinist - whether he’d bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day. ‘Yes,’ came the answer, ‘I’ve bought her a belt and a bag. ‘’That was very kind of you,’ Jim added, ‘I hope she appreciates the thought.’ ‘So do I,’ smiled Tony, ‘especially when she realises that the vacuum cleaner will work much better now she’s got them.’ A bloke who thought he was a bit of a charmer sidles over to a really good looking girl in the nightclub and says ‘Tell me, honey, do you have a date for Valentine’s Night?’ ‘Yes,’ she said, ‘February the 14th, now get lost.’ A friend of mine was telling me about one of the best Valentine
messages he’d ever received. It was from a wonderful lady with whom he had enjoyed a long and lasting friendship. ‘Her advice in the card,’ he said, ‘suggested that as you grow older the only things you ever regret are the things you didn’t do. I have,’ he continued, ‘taken her advice and lived a wonderful life ever since.’
It was St Valentine’s Day and a husband and wife were discussing whether their rather romantic time together could continue until they reached a hundred. ‘Not really,’ said the husband, ‘because one of the great tragedies of life is that the only way you can live to be a hundred is if you give up all the things that actually make you want to live that long!

A man walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on a load of bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. The first man’s curiosity got the better of him so he asked the balding man what he is doing. The man says “I’m sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?” “But why?” asked the man. “I’m a divorce lawyer,” was the reply. A girl decided to buy her boyfriend a new jacket for Valentine’s Day but couldn’t decide which was best so she approached the salesman.
‘Excuse me,’ she said, ‘but if your girlfriend was to buy you a new jacket what type would you want it to be?’ ‘Bullet-proof,’ he replied, ‘I’m married!’ It was Valentine’s night at the club and a sleazy bloke approached a good looking girl and said ‘Hi Honey, your place or mine?’ ‘Both,’ she said, ‘you go to yours and I’ll go to mine.’ Two girls were discussing where they might find a nice date for Valentine’s night. ‘Where on earth,’ said the first, ‘are all the really nice, attractive, considerate, loving men who are actually able to show their real feelings?’ ‘They already have boyfriends,’ was the reply. TRADITIONAL PANCAKES
T
raditional pancakes are quick to make, easy, cheap and quite delicious with lemon and sugar, golden syrup, chocolate Nutella type spread, honey, cream... whatever takes your fancy. You need a gentle touch to start with, the aim is to get thin pancakes with a frilly edge and to do this you must have a hot pan and only a little batter. Pour it in quickly and move the pan from side to side to distribute the batter. You should see the little bubbles rising to the surface, flip up the side with a fish slice to see if it is brown enough but don’t get carried away and start batting it down with the slice-you will only make the pancake heavier. A quick flick of the wrist and you should be able to flip it into the air like a pro.
INGREDIENTS: Makes about fourteen pancakes 125g Plain flour ¼ teaspoon of salt 1 large egg 300ml milk Lard or solid vegetable fat
Once you have made one or two you will get the knack of it. They are best eaten warm. METHOD: Place flour and salt in a basin. Make a well in the centre and add the egg and half the milk. Beat well and then gradually add the rest of the milk. Beat until bubbles appear and then pour into a small jug to make the

pouring easier. The batter should be the consistency of single cream. Keep a fork or mini-whisk in the jug so you can give it another beat as you go along. Heat up your pan and add a small piece of fat (about the size of a hazelnut). Allow it to spread over the pan by tipping it back and forward and let it get fairly hot.

THE CURSE OF THE MANAGER OF THE MONTH AWARD STRIKES AGAIN!
I
t was fairly inevitable that after a superb festive season for Jonathan Woodgate which culminated in his first ‘Manager of the Month’ award, results would probably dip and the curse of that particular acclaim would strike again. Having said that, the games following the exciting performances that gave us four league wins in a row were hardly easy and there is no way anyone could criticise the team for not taking excellent opportunities to extend that winning run. The draw against Derby, for instance, was disappointing as we had numerous chances to put the game to bed only to be foiled late on by a truly superb volley. We then more than held our own at home to ‘Spurs in the FA Cup and while the replay started badly there was a lot to applaud in the late comeback that saw us only lose by the odd goal. To be fair, it turned out to be a good result for ‘Boro because the team showed a degree of lethargy against both Fulham and Birmingham that would certainly not have been helped by a very long trip to Southampton had we enjoyed victory over ‘Spurs. Following that, the Paddy McNair penalty miss against Birmingham before ‘Boro’s ex-striker Lucas Jutkievitcz scored would
probably have meant a win instead of a draw so perhaps we should again regret missing out on another excellent opportunity. Perhaps the most important factor that has emerged from these games, however, is the way that Manchester City loan signing Patrick Roberts has immediately fitted in and shown enough potential to see the exciting football Woodgate promised at the start of the season come to fruition on a consistent basis. The four wins in a row that included the fantastic results at West Brom and Preston showed us that Woodgate’s determination to play attacking and exciting football were beginning to materialise but the excellent first touch, close control and attacking intentions Roberts has demonstrated so far are certainly signs that we have a lot to look forward to for the rest of the season. And looking up instead of down in the league is definitely an advantage that at the end of November we could hardly have envisaged. But as I write we are now reaching the end of the transfer window and much has been said about the disastrous injury situation that has forced Woodgate to play midfielders Howson and McNair as two of our three main central defenders. He has also had to do without top scorer for

have a tough looking game at Brentford. If we maintain the sort of form we have shown over the last month, however, we have every chance to continue to climb the league. If we can do that it may well lead to a more exciting end to the season than we could have foreseen during the early part of a campaign that for a couple of weeks saw us encamped in the relegation zone. While it’s probably obvious, I have to admit I’m a bit of a Woodgate fan and applaud the fact that he has developed and progressed during a very difficult period over which he has had very little control. That he has come through all that with commendable fortitude and some excellent results and performances says a lot for his potential as a very good manager. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again now. I hope he gets what he deserves. The chance and the time to prove it! Here’s wishing you all a very successful February.

So, approaching the often ridiculous events of that final day of the transfer window, questions have also been asked about the future of Dael Fry and the potential of a loan return of Ben Gibson. Both will be played out before this edition is released, but whatever the result of those final days of the window ‘Boro have definitely turned a corner and should continue to look up and not down. The wonderful thing about the championship is that - as we showed during December and early January - a bit of consistency can reap huge benefits and see a team storm up the league.
