AN ALL-ROUND PROFESSIONAL SERVICE Craig Wilson has been running Wilson Plumbing and Heating for over 30 years. Having many years’ experience prior to that, Craig really is an expert in every area of Plumbing and Heating. There is always a solution to any challenge. With vast experience and such a depth of professional knowledge there are very few situations that Craig has not come across in his time. Working through the COVID 19 pandemic has been a first though. From the very first days it became apparent Covid was going to be a problem in this country Wilson Plumbing and Heating immediately implemented numerous measures to keep customers and staff safe. The engineers were, and still are, regularly briefed. Policies and procedures have been adapted as the situation developed. Continuing to work to cover customers emergency repairs and maintenance was essential for a company that has built its business on customer service. Customers depend on Wilson reliability. The team did not want to let anyone down in their time of need. Working with the Health and Safety Executive and Government guidance, jobs were prioritised. Emergency repairs, boiler replacement and essential maintenance work has continued, with very stringent precautions in place to keep everyone as safe as is possible. The team of engineers is growing at Wilson Plumbing and Heating. Steve Toulson has just been welcomed to the fold. With more than 30 years’ experience, the last 18 with British Gas, Craig Wilson is delighted with Steve’s appointment. ‘Steve is an excellent addition to our team, with a
wealth of experience. Adding to engineer Kens 40 years’ experience and Grahams 30 years’ we can grow whilst continuing to provide the professional expertise that we are known for. We are still looking to recruit exceptional gas and oil installation engineers to our growing business.’ Wilson Plumbing and Heating are a Worcester Bosch Accredited Partner and Worcester Approved Service Provider. This reinforces the company’s high standards and enables them to offer extended warranties and carry out repairs to Worcester boilers within the warranty period. This gives customers additional peace of mind, on top of the excellent backup provided by Worcester themselves. Warranties are up to twelve years warranty, depending on the boiler model. Wilson Plumbing and Heating offer customers an all-round professional service, including heating installation, maintenance, and repairs for gas, oil, LPG, Warm air and commercial. Plus boiler and fire servicing and repairs, landlord gas safety inspections, legionella risk assessments, park home and caravan heating and certification - and much more. You can contact Wilson Plumbing and Heating on 01642 487309, or visit their website at www.cawheating.co.uk

In The Garden
P
lant or divide snowdrops while they are still in the green. Deadhead pansies and other winter bedding on a regular basis so that they carry on well into the spring. Start gladioli corms and dahlia tubers off by placing them in trays in a light, warm place. Remove dead leaves from alpines and top dress with grit or gravel. Plan your summer containers and bedding and buy plug plants to grow on in the greenhouse. Slug killer should be added to the garden where you know hostas, delphiniums and lilies will soon be appearing. The best day to do this is Valentines day as it is the right time and the easiest date to remember. Sow hardy annuals in pots or trays if you didn’t do this last autumn. Wisteria
should be pruned by cutting back the sideshoots to two or three buds. Cut back group 3 clematis down to the lowest pair of strong buds and then feed and mulch. At the end of the month top dress beds and borders with a fertiliser such a fish, blood and bone or Growmore.
Lawns Turf can be laid if the ground is not frozen or really wet and then keep off of it for several weeks. If the conditions allow, you can prepare the seed bed for making a new lawn in the spring. As moles will be starting to mate this month watch out for increased activity and get rid of any mole hills that appear on the lawn. As the soil pushed up is so fine use it for seed sowing. If you have noticed moss or algae on

the lawn it means you have drainage problems. Make a note to improve drainage at a later date.
Fruit and Vegetables Prune autumn raspberries, taking the old canes down to the ground and if summer fruiting raspberries are growing too tall for their support they can also be pruned. Plant new fruit trees and bushes and bare rooted cane fruits. If you have peaches, nectarines or apricots with early flowers you can protect them from frost with fleece. Apply a general fertilizer to all your fruit using the rate given on the packet. Now is a good time to mulch all the fruit beds with garden compost or well rotted manure. Once you have an area of the garden or allotment prepared for seedbeds cover them with fleece, clear polythene or cloches to warm up the soil prior to sowing. Seeds of summer vegetables can be sown now in pots or seed trays if you have a clay soil or outside if your soil is light. Sow lettuce, radish, onions, peas, broad beans and summer cabbage. Buy seed potatoes and leave in a light but frost free place to chit. Stand them upright in trays or egg cartons with the end with most shoots uppermost. From the middle of the month you can sow seeds of greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers in a heated propagator or warm room where the temperature does not drop below 70° F or 21°C.
Wildlife Keep an eye on the water level of your wildlife pond and if it is low top up with water, preferably from a rainwater butt. Put up nesting boxes for birds
separately from bird feeders. Site them facing north or north east so they do not get too hot. If you can combine this with facing one of your windows you will have the added pleasure of seeing the mother bird coming and going and then the chicks leaving the nest. Still provide adequate food for the birds but start to make the pieces smaller as it gets near to fledgling time. Birds really need our help now as there is very little natural food about for them and they need to build up their strength for breeding. In very mild weather hedgehogs, frogs and toads may emerge from hibernation. If you see any signs of this the hedgehogs would appreciate a little extra feeding with cat or dog food.

TK L CAL Y L CAL We’re really lucky... our local area is full of wonderful small businesses
There are heaps of reasons to buy from local companies Here are 5 big reasons for using your local businesses: 1. They know their customers Local businesses understand people in the area. They’re quick to react to what their customers want and are able to meet the changing needs of the local population. This means they can offer you relevant and interesting products and services rather than the larger, more commercial companies that generally provide the same things no matter where you live.
2. They create jobs Shops in our towns create jobs within the local community. By purchasing from these smaller businesses, you’re helping to grow employment opportunities which in turn, makes the area a better place to live and work.
3. The experience There’s nothing quite like the personal touch that comes with the customer service in a local shop. They get to know you and can offer products and services that best meet your needs. Plus, they have an authenticity that the bigger brands can’t usually match. What’s not to like?!
4. They’re better for the environment Local businesses often source their products locally, which helps to reduce their carbon footprint.
5. Great deals - you’ll be surprised! Don’t assume that chain stores have the best deals - local businesses can have competitive pricing that you might not expect. Before you hit Google, take the time to have a look around your area and see what’s on offer. Which local businesses do you love?
There are two fine examples of established local companies on the next pages... Visit: local-answer.co.uk for LOCAL NEWS & SPORT | Local Answer - Tel: 01642 296513 - February 2021 | PAGE 19

WONDERFUL OBSERVATIONS OF ST VALENTINE’S DAY
T
here are many ways to appreciate and enjoy St Valentine’s Day, given that it’s theoretically the most romantic day of the year. Sadly, however, some people look on it as a bit of a challenge and find it hard to show their true feelings. To help them we’ve put together some alternative observations on the big day! Jim asked his friend Tony - who was a bit of a chauvinist - whether he’d bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day. ‘Yes,’ came the answer, ‘I’ve bought her a belt and a bag. ‘’That was very kind of you,’ Jim added, ‘I hope she appreciates the thought.’ ‘So do I,’ smiled Tony, ‘especially when she realises that the vacuum cleaner will work much better now she’s got them.’ A bloke who thought he was a bit of a charmer sidles over to a really good looking girl in the nightclub and says ‘Tell me, honey, do you have a date for Valentine’s Night?’ ‘Yes,’ she said, ‘February the 14th, now get lost.’ A friend of mine was telling me about one of the best Valentine
messages he’d ever received. It was from a wonderful lady with whom he had enjoyed a long and lasting friendship. ‘Her advice in the card,’ he said, ‘suggested that as you grow older the only things you ever regret are the things you didn’t do. I have,’ he continued, ‘taken her advice and lived a wonderful life ever since.’
It was St Valentine’s Day and a husband and wife were discussing whether their rather romantic time together could continue until they reached a hundred. ‘Not really,’ said the husband, ‘because one of the great tragedies of life is that the only way you can live to be a hundred is if you give up all the things that actually make you want to live that long!

A man walks into a post office to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on a load of bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. The first man’s curiosity got the better of him so he asked the balding man what he is doing. The man says “I’m sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?” “But why?” asked the man. “I’m a divorce lawyer,” was the reply. A girl decided to buy her boyfriend a new jacket for Valentine’s Day but couldn’t decide which was best so she approached the salesman. ‘Excuse me,’ she said, ‘but if your
girlfriend was to buy you a new jacket what type would you want it to be?’ ‘Bullet-proof,’ he replied, ‘I’m married!’ It was Valentine’s night at the club and a sleazy bloke approached a good looking girl and said ‘Hi Honey, your place or mine?’ ‘Both,’ she said, ‘you go to yours and I’ll go to mine.’ Two girls were discussing where they might find a nice date for Valentine’s night. ‘Where on earth,’ said the first, ‘are all the really nice, attractive, considerate, loving men who are actually able to show their real feelings?’ ‘They already have boyfriends,’ was the reply. Have a great Valentine’s Day!

INSIDER SECRETS! 3 WAYS TO MEASURE THE SUCCESS OF YOUR PRINTED AD
Y
ou want to grow your business, so you’ve decided to place an ad in a local publication. But how will you know if the campaign has been successful? Only by knowing what works and what doesn’t will you be able to truly measure the impact of your ad. We’ve tapped into our years of experience to put together the following guide that will help you to create a measurable printed ad:
Tip #1
Here are a few ways to do this:
• Promote a particular service or product that you don’t really advertise elsewhere Your ad should include messaging • You could set up a bespoke phone that asks the consumer to perform an number to be used only for this ad action or provide a response. Use a powerful call to action that will prompt • Create a page on your website them to do something specific, such as specifically for Local Answer readers. Tailor the content of this page so that calling a number to redeem an offer. it’s in-line with the messaging in the Be sure to mention the benefit they’ll get from responding so they feel like it ad so that the customer journey flows well and is uninterrupted will be worthwhile! • Consider offering an exclusive Tip #2 Local Answer discount code that Create an ad unique to the Local the audience needs to quote. This Answer way, you know they’ve come to you Rather than using the same campaign through seeing the printed ad that you’re running elsewhere, making Tip #3 an ad that’s specific to the advertising Get your testing hat on magazine makes it easier to measure Don’t be afraid to brainstorm and and gives a more honest idea of how well it’s working for you. come up with a few different ad
Make sure it can actually be measured

concepts. Think about two or three variations of an ad and have a slight change in each version. We’d recommend only changing one aspect of each ad so that you can easily identify which element is effective. You can then run the ads in consecutive issues of an advertising magazine, like the Local Answer, and see which one achieved the most enquiries/sales.
Finally By implementing some of these approaches, you’ll be able to monitor the performance of your ad. If you’d like more information about the Local Answer, we’d really love to hear from you. Contact Yvette on 01642 296513, Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4pm.

TRADITIONAL PANCAKES
T
raditional pancakes are quick to make, easy, cheap and quite delicious with lemon and sugar, golden syrup, chocolate Nutella type spread, honey, cream... whatever takes your fancy. You need a gentle touch to start with, the aim is to get thin pancakes with a frilly edge and to do this you must have a hot pan and only a little batter. Pour it in quickly and move the pan from side to side to distribute the batter. You should see the little bubbles rising to the surface, flip up the side with a fish slice to see if it is brown enough but don’t get carried away and start
batting it down with the slice-you will only make the pancake heavier. A quick flick of the wrist and you should be able to flip it into the air like a pro. Once you have made one or two you will get the knack of it. They are best eaten warm.
INGREDIENTS: Makes about fourteen pancakes 125g Plain flour ¼ teaspoon of salt 1 large egg 300ml milk Lard or solid vegetable fat

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers
METHOD: Place flour and salt in a basin. Make a well in the centre and add the egg and half the milk. Beat well and then gradually add the rest of the milk. Beat until bubbles appear and then pour into a small jug to make the pouring easier. The batter should be the consistency of single cream. Keep a fork or mini-whisk in the jug so you can give it another beat as you go along. Heat up your pan and add a small piece of fat (about the size of a hazelnut). Allow it to spread over the pan by tipping it back and forward and let it get fairly hot. Pour in a little batter and quickly tilt the pan from side to side so that the batter spreads out thinly. Little bubbles should appear on the surface (if they don’t you have poured in too much mixture). Check to see if the bottom is golden use a fish slice to have a look. When it is golden and starting to brown toss or turn it over and cook the other side. If you have a lot to make it’s handy to use a piece of fat wrapped in muslin, scrunched up and held with fine string. Then you can just swipe it across the pan each time. These pancakes are best served straight away but can be stored one on top of the other, separated by greaseproof paper, and then wrapped in a tea towel.

Football - The ‘Boro
SO FAR, SO GOOD - WE'RE THEREABOUTS!
N
eil Warnock’s hopes at the start of the season were that we would be somewhere near the business end of the table at the turn of the year and with just over half the games played to date, ‘Boro have certainly achieved that aim. Sitting in seventh place and just three points behind sixth place Bournemouth with a game in hand is a very promising position to find ourselves. But following the last two contrasting performances as I write – losing at home to Birmingham and then winning away at Forest – it would be easy to again comment on a lack of consistency. It’s fair to say, however, that the Birmingham result owed much to the after effects of the Covid virus so we perhaps shouldn’t read too much into that one. Conversely, we should really take a lot of satisfaction from the excellent ‘Forest performance, not least because it saw the eagerly awaited return of Johnny Howson. And boy, did he prove
what a miss he’s been since his injury. Completely controlling the midfield and providing tremendous support to both the back four and the players in front of him he showed how much better the team is when he’s in it. So looking at the next few weeks there’s again a big contrast in the teams we will face with two winnable home games against Rotherham and Blackburn followed by visits to top three sides Norwich and Brentford. It’s pretty obvious that if we are to maintain a place in and around the play-offs then we would hope to see a minimum of six and perhaps even eight points from those four games. But in this league you just never know. One apparent uncertainty is the guessing game that is the January transfer window. Neil Warnock has frequently announced his acute awareness of the financial situation surrounding Covid and is obviously reluctant to spend Steve Gibson’s money unless it will really improve the

particularly important to their own clubs so why would they improve ours? There’s also the danger of disruption to team spirit -something Warnock has managed to develop in this group of players – so why risk it? I’ve said before that at no point in the season have we been particularly outplayed and there’s really only Norwich that has shown that little bit extra over the season so there’s still every chance that with a bit of luck on the injury front we could continue to compete right to the end. We’ve reached the really exciting time of the season when every result can have a huge impact on the league table. At least this year we are most certainly looking upwards and not over our shoulder with trepidation. And that’s all thanks to the very likeable Neil Warnock. He’s been a great signing!

team. I have to say that so far I have heard no potential incoming names that particularly excite and with the return of Johnny Howson and the imminent addition to the strike force of (prior to his injury) the vastly improved Ashley Fletcher, it’s hard to see where anyone else would actually fit in. The goalkeeper and possibly the best back four in the championship currently pick themselves, while another excellent performance and goal from George Saville, the continued whole hearted efforts from Marcus Tavernier and the hard working reliability of Sam Morsey suggests that any newcomer would – like Patrick Roberts – be merely warming the bench. To me, January signings tend to suggest that the players are not
