Plant out new spring bedding such as wallflowers, primula and bellis. Bring inside any tender perennials such as fuchsia or geraniums before the first frosts. If you have somewhere frost free they can be kept over winter or if not then take cuttings. After the first frost lift cannas and dahlias or if you live in a sheltered spot you can try to leave them in the ground but cover them with straw or bracken.

Lawn Raise the height of the mower and mow less often. This is a good time to sow or turf a new lawn or to repair bald patches in an existing one. If the edge of a lawn has broken down then cut out a patch round it of about one foot square and turn the turf round so that the broken edge is now next to the lawn and the good edge is facing out. The bare patch can then be sprinkled with fine soil or compost and then seeded. It is a good time to scarify (rake out all the thatch and debris with a long tined rake) and aerate (make holes all over the lawn

After scarifying and aerating put on an autumn feed that is high in potassium. Don’t use a summer feed as you will get soft growth which will be prone to disease. Finally top dress the lawn with loam or sand working it in with a still brush or the back of a rake. If this all sounds like too much hard work you can buy scarifiers and aeraters to make life easier.

At the end of the month, wrap grease band around the trunks of fruit trees to prevent the wingless female moths from climbing up to lay their eggs. Continue to sow over wintering seeds such as spinach, turnip, lettuce and onions. Any outdoor tomatoes should be picked before frosts and brought indoors to ripen. Leave them on the vine and place the whole truss in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. Lift onions and shallots but do not bend over at the neck as they wont store as well. If the weather is not wet leave them to dry on the soil otherwise bring them into a dry shed. Lift all root vegetables and store in a cool, dark and dry place. Leave parsnips in the ground as they are better tasting after being frosted.

BROCCOLI AND TOFU STIR FRY

f you fancy noodles, instead of reaching for a manufactured pot noodle which has very little nutrients, try this recipe which includes broccoli (full of vitamins, iron, calcium and fibre) and tofu (containing iron, calcium, protein and essential amino acids). To make it a quick recipe, steam the broccoli while frying the tofu, then while stir frying and combining the ingredients below cook the noodles. Ingredients 2 tablespoons veg oil, 2 cloves garlic, 1 inch fresh ginger cut into matchsticks, 150g fried tofu, 2 tablespoons light soy sauce, 1 cup chopped broccoli, including sliced stalk, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, dessertspoon cornflour mixed with 2 tablespoons water, egg or rice noodles. Chop the broccoli and thinly slice the broccoli stalk (after cutting off outer hard part) then steam it until almost soft. Cut tofu into ½ inch cubes and fry in a non stick pan until lightly browned.

Take broccoli out of pan and put aside, then briefly swish the cooked tofu in the hot water from the broccoli. Take it out and put it aside with the broccoli. Put your water on to boil for the noodles. Chop garlic and ginger. Put veg oil in a frying pan and cook garlic & ginger on medium heat for a few minutes. Add the broccoli, tofu, soy sauce, salt, sugar and sesame oil. Add cornflour mixture and stir until it thickens (add more water if you want the sauce thinner). A MIXED START FOR 'BORO BUT FANS LIVE UP TO ALL EXPECTATIONS

hile it’s been a bit of a mixed start for Boro, the return to live football has been absolutely brilliant and ‘Boro’s fans have certainly lived up to all of Neil Warnock’s often expressed expectations. Sensational at Fulham, deafening at the Riverside and yet another sell-out at Derby is a great indication of the tremendous support ‘Boro enjoy. That loyalty is hopefully being repaid by Steve Gibson with another couple of signings now in place, more to come and a squad that certainly promises much more depth in almost every department? The spine of the team has certainly looked much better with Uchi Ikpeazo impressing with both his strength and work rate, and the find of the season

so far with sparkling performances from Isiah Jones. That said, there are questions already being asked about Joe Lumley, with two of the QPR goals definitely stoppable! It’s early days though, and Warnock has plenty of time to work with his new look squad to identify the best eleven and the best way to use them. Perhaps the biggest effect the return of crowds and media has had in our first few games, however, has seen Neil Warnock revert to the ebullient, demonstrative figurehead he has become famous - or should say infamous - for over the years. I have to say that the performance of him - and indeed the entire ‘Boro bench at Fulham left a lot to be desired with attacks on the referee made very early in the game.
