Remove any painted glass shading and install plastic bubble wrap for insulation. Remove any remaining summer bedding from both containers and borders and replace with plants such as pansies, bellis and wallflowers that will see you through to the spring. Pot up prepared hyacinth bulbs to have flowers at Christmas and New Year. Make sure all planted containers are raised off the ground with pot feet so that they drain well in rainy weather. Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips, so that you have a succession of flowers. If you choose the right varieties you can have bulbs in flower from January to May. Net your pond to prevent falling leaves going in and decomposing in the water. Prune bush roses by half to prevent them rocking in very windy weather which can loosen them at their roots. Also prune climbing roses now.

Lawns

Keep as many leaves off the lawn as possible to prevent them blocking out light and air and damaging the grass. This is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress the lawn if it was not done in September. If the weather is very wet keep off the lawn as much as possible. If the grass is still growing it is fine to carry on mowing.

Fruit and Vegetables

Lift and divide old rhubarb crowns that are more than five years old. Make sure that all the divisions have two or more fat pink buds. After preparing the ground really well you can plant new fruit trees and bushes now. Prune out any diseased or dead shoots on apple and pear trees and collect any fallen fruits or dead fruits on the trees. It is important to maintain hygiene in the fruit garden to prevent the spread of diseases. Remove yellow foliage and unwanted runners from strawberry plants and also any plants that look as if they are diseased. Sow over wintering broad beans. It helps if you can cover them with fleece to stop pigeons getting at them. Plant out spring cabbages and these need netting to protect from pigeons.

Healthy Eating

TART TATIN (French Apple Tart) t’s Autumn and apple season. Apples are high in fibre and good for your digestion, while being low in fat and calories. If you know anyone with an apple tree, they are usually more than happy to give some away. Use any eating apples, but golden delicious and granny smiths don’t work as well in this recipe. Instead of the usual apple pie, this tart only has pastry on the bottom which makes it healthier! It’s easy to make but you do need a pie dish about 26cm round with sloping sides if you can find one.

Ingredients

Shortcrust pastry to fit the pie dish (homemade or bought), 150g sugar, 8 dessert apples, 100g butter or margarine. Pre-heat the oven to gas 4. Grease a round dish of 26cm (sloping sided) with oil and

shake in 125g sugar so that the bottom and sides of the tin are coated with sugar and in forms an even layer. Peel, core and cut apples into 6 segments. Place apples tightly on top of the sugar in a spiral shape (see pic). Fill in gaps with smaller pieces. Heat the pie dish on the top of the cooker, reduce the heat when the sugar under the apples is lightly caramalised (when it goes light brown – check by lifting a corner of apple with a knife). Take off the heat, sprinkle the rest of the sugar and flake butter or marg on top of the apples. Roll out the pastry and cover the apples, tucking in at the edges. Pierce the pastry with a fork all over. Cook for 20 minutes. When it’s cooled a bit, turn it upside down onto a plate. t the time of writing ‘Boro sit – not very proudly – in 16th position with two wins, three draws and three defeats from our first eight games. The two fixtures following the international break could not have offered a more contrasting outlook with the apparent new dawn of the somewhat rare victory at Nottingham Forest being rudely squashed by the home defeat against Blackpool. In hindsight the result in Nottingham was probably more an indication of the complete lack of quality in the ‘Forest side than it was the strength in ours even though the new recruits all played an important part and showed they could have a great deal to offer. In contrast, though, there was a number of worrying ‘if onlys’ in the Blackpool reverse. For instance, had the two superb efforts from Sporer and Payero that both hit the woodwork sneaked in, the

result could have been much more positive. Instead, after a first half that should have seen us well ahead at the interval it was the injury to Anfernee Djiksteel that changed the course of the game and was proof if needed of the continuing lack of depth in the fullback department. Blackpool took full advantage, of course - helped when a number of dubious refereeing decisions went against us - but even then their winner came from a Grant Hall own goal that could – and should – have been headed to safety. Another ‘if only.’ Optimism should still be there, though, as we have Marc Bola and Paddy McNair to return from injury and further strengthening a possibility with out of contract players being examined. The likelihood of finding one that could have the impact of Duncan Watmore last season, however, is probably remote. But with the new signings looking as if they will definitely strengthen things once they get fully up to speed, our

So there’s still a long way to go and despite our 16th position the important statistic is that we’re still only four points outside the play-off positions. One or two consecutive wins could change the picture dramatically. That said it was quite interesting to hear our new Head of Football Kieran Scott’s first interview in which he began by saying that everything he could possibly need is already in place at the club to help him make a success of his new role. ‘It’s all there,’ he said, ‘it maybe just

needs a bit of life putting back into it.’

He would obviously be present both for the Forest and the Blackpool games and I really can’t see how he could imagine putting any more life into the performance of the fans because in both games they were once again magnificent. Add to that the fact our academy is still considered one of the best in the country and it looks as if he has got himself a fairly enviable position. Time will tell with perhaps his main influence centred round future recruitment and I for one look forward to seeing how things change in that department.

There’s not a lot he can do immediately, but we’ll see what happens in January and whether the hard work he has promised us is going to pay off. We wait with baited breath!
