The New Year
I
AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A LITTLE SMILE... t’s a well known fact that January is the most depressing month of the year. It may be that the weather is at its worst or that Christmas is over for another year but whatever the reason people tend to be at their worst this month. So here’s the opportunity to have a little smile while you enjoy your coffee. And can we take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year.
A primary school teacher had a map of the world on the classroom wall and said ‘I’m going to ask you some geography questions.’ She asked little Mary to come up to the map and said ‘Mary, can you point to America on the map. Mary stood on her tiptoes and put her finger right on North America. ‘Wonderful,’ said the teacher. ‘Now Johnny, can you tell me who discovered America?’ ‘Yes Miss,’ said Johnny, ‘it was Mary.’ It was karaoke time at the pub and Paddy got up to sing ‘when Irish Eyes are Smiling.’ When he’d finished the song he noticed a lady in the front row crying into her handkerchief. He walked over to her and said ‘Ah, for sure, you must be an Irish lady.’ ‘No,’ she said, ‘I’m a music teacher. There was a sudden electricity failure in a Dublin store and hundreds of people were stranded on the escalators for hours.
The old gentleman was backing his Rolls Royce into the last available parking space when a zippy red sports car whipped in behind him to take the spot. The young man who was driving jumped out of the car and said ‘Sorry Pops, but you’ve got to be young and smart to do that.’ The old man ignored the remark and continued to reverse into the sports car leaving it a crumpled wreck. ‘Sorry, son’ said the old man, ‘but you have to be old and rich to do that!
The other day, my wife asked me to pass her a lipstick but I accidentally passed her a glue stick by mistake. She still isn’t talking to me. Two small boys were playing with a football outside their home when their mother came to the gate and said ‘where did you get that football from?’ ‘We found it,’ said one of the boys. ‘Are you sure it was lost?’ asked the mother. ‘Yes,’ said the second boy. We saw some people looking for it.’ A man sidles over to a woman in a bar and used the oldest pick-up line in the world .... ‘your place or mine?’ The woman stared contemptuously back at him and said ‘Both. You go to yours and I’ll go to mine.’
A chap was telling his friends about his mother in law. ‘She’s a remarkable

woman,’ he said. ‘She’s eighty five year old and doesn’t use glasses.’ ‘So she must have really great eyesight?’ replied one of his friends. ‘Nah,’ he said. ‘She drinks straight from the bottle!’ An old man came back from his retirement party and complained bitterly that all his working life he’d had to live by the clock. ‘We get up by the clock, go to school by the clock and finish school by the clock. When we begin work we start by the clock, come home by the clock and go to bed by the clock,’ he said. That goes on for sixty five years until you retire. So what do they give you when you finish? A bloody clock! My mother used to read the obituaries every morning in the local

paper. She always thought it was amazing that people seemed to die in alphabetical order. The difference between men and women is that women never admit their age and men very rarely act theirs. But Nancy Astor - on her 80th birthday had it right when she said ‘I used to dread getting older because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do all the things I wanted to do. Now I am older I find I don’t want to do them anyway!’ Teacher: “If you had one dollar and you asked your father for another, how many dollars would you have?” Vincent: “One dollar.” Teacher: “You don’t know your arithmetic.” Vincent: “You don’t know my father.”

In The Garden
I
n frosty weather little can be done in the garden. The ground is too hard to dig or plant and the lawn should not be walked on. Although there is very little work to do, January ushers in the beginning of a new year that is full of promise in the garden. Despite the low temperatures and short daylight hours, there some useful tasks that can be done.
If the weather is mild, you can still plant roses and bare rooted shrubs and trees. At this is time of year a heated greenhouse has great appeal, especially when the weather is too cold and wet to work outside.
The warmth of a heated cold-frame or greenhouse or even a sunny indoor window enables you to sow annuals that need a long growing season and start of those early vegetable crops. Roots of favourite herbs, can also be lifted and brought indoors, to provide fresh shoots and leaves for winter flavour.
Winter digging is necessary for beds and borders that need to be planted in early spring. The earlier this is done the better, allowing time for frosts to act and break down the soil. The longer any rough clods of soil are exposed to frost, the easier it will be to get a fine tilth in spring. While digging, it is a good idea to work in plenty of wellrotted manure or garden compost at the same time, thus improving the soil’s texture and richness. If you have planted any trees or shrubs during the winter months, check that they haven’t been lifted by frost. Once lifted, they can rock in the wind and their roots will be slower to get established. Refirm the plants by pressing down on the surrounding soil with your feet. You may also need to stake any tall or exposed plants to prevent further wind rock. If the surface of water features or a pond has frozen solid, and particularly if it contains fish, break the ice with care. If the ice is very thick, use a

Planning Next Season’s Garden
The long winter evenings provide plenty of time to browse through seed catalogues and plan new projects in the garden. Late January to early February is an ideal time to visit garden centres to buy seeds, tubers and bulbs for the coming season. If you are ordering products from a seed catalogue, or over the internet, it should be done as early as possible or they may arrive too late for their proper sowing or planting dates.
Maintain and Check Garden Tools and Equipment
Make sure that mechanical equipment such as mowers, rotovators, edgers, strimmers and hedge trimmers are in good working order. If any need repairing or sharpening, take them in for servicing by a professional.
Winter Tasks
Any jobs that do not require cementing or painting, such as building or knocking down old sheds, putting up a fence, laying out gravel paths or a terrace or making a rock garden, are best carried out now, while the soil is workable and all the plants are dormant.
Making a Rock Garden
This is a good time to make a new rock garden or improve an old one. It is too early to add any plants yet, but the preparation and construction work can be done now.
A good builders’ merchant, nursery or garden centre specialising in garden construction materials should have a range of rocks and will be able to advise you on costs, and how many you are likely to need.

The New Year NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS The First Thing That Gets Broken On January 1st
T
hey say making New Year’s resolutions is something most people do with the absolute intention of keeping them but always find it impossible. But for those who made one and kept it last year we would like to offer our hearty congratulations. For the rest of you (and that includes us) here are a few New Year observations you might like! It’s everybody’s New Year wish to win the lottery. Well if I did I wouldn’t take the publicity, you get too many begging letters. And if they’re anything like the ones I send out I wouldn’t want to know. An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. My brother’s New Year’s resolution is to move out of our parents’ house. You’d think after 49 years he’d try another one.
Every New Year’s Day I celebrate making it through another holiday season without killing my relatives. My New Year’s resolution is to get
better at pretending to know the words to Auld Lang Syne.
New Year’s Eve, when auld acquaintance be forgot (unless those paternity tests come back positive).
A New Year resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.
This New Year’s Eve I’m going to make a resolution I can keep: I’m not going to diet this year.
Women get a little more excited about New Year’s Eve than men do because they have better intentions. But they still drink too much, make a lot of promises they’re not going to keep and the next morning as soon as they wake up they start breaking them. Men just call that a date. My New Year’s resolution is to eat better, so from now on, I’m going to only date blokes who can afford to take me somewhere other than McDonalds.
If you make a New Year’s resolution to eat a healthy diet, and you keep it, you won’t actually live longer, but it will bloody well seem like it.
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers
Youth is when you’re allowed to stay up late on New Year’s Eve. Middle age is when you’re forced to.
Usually my main goal at a New Year’s party is to remember who I came with. May you find the strength to write, “Who is this?” to all the strange numbers that text you “Happy New Year!” tonight.
My New Year resolution is not to shovel snow. Since I live in Florida I feel pretty good about it. New Year parades have a lot in common with Santa Claus. Nobody is ever awake to see either one of them. This New Year I was going to make a
resolution never to be late again, but I didn’t wake up until January 2nd. “Out with the old, in with the new” is a fitting expression for a holiday that is based on vomiting. My New Year’s resolution is to try to remember why I’ve walked into a room.
I see no need to make more New Year’s resolutions when the ones already on the books aren’t being kept.
My New Year’s resolution is to take all the Christmas lights down by Easter. And finally, a wish to you all - may all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions. Have a great 2022!

How To Check If An Electrician Is Properly Qualified?
W
hen welcoming an electrician onto your premises, it’s important to be sure that they are fully qualified. Take a look at our guide on how to find a good electrician that’s suitable for the job.
What Accreditations Can An Electrician Have?
There are several government-approved schemes that electricians can register with, helping customers to ensure that they are adequately qualified and that they follow all necessary safety procedures. Hiring a registered electrician means that they are regulated by the government, their work is regularly assessed, they work to the BS7671 safety standard, and they are insured. Various accreditations and membership schemes for electricians in the UK include: NICEIC, NAPIT and ECA.
How Do I Check If An Electrician Is Registered?
If an electrician claims to be registered with a certain body, you can check this on the registration body’s website, or contact them by telephone if you are struggling to find confirmation. For example, you can search the NICEIC database to check whether an electrician is a registered contractor. If a person or
company falsely claims to be registered, you should report them to the relevant registration body.
Certificates And ID
All qualified electricians will hold a ECS card which will contain a photo plus their qualifications on the rear. In addition, you can visit the following website to verify this information: www. ecscard.org.uk/ecs-check-card-search
It is always advisable to check the ID and relevant paperwork of any electrician before allowing them onto the premises.
A legitimate, qualified electrician will be more than happy for you to check their identification and wait for you to verify it if necessary. Never work with an electrician who refuses to show you these documents. When an electrician carries out work for you, they should provide you with the relevant certificates for any installations. An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) or Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC) is a declaration that the new installation or alteration is safe at the time of issue. In many instances, this certificate is a legal requirement.
How Qualified Should Your Electrician Be?
Depending on the complexity of the work, some jobs require a more highly qualified electrical contractor than others.
PAGE 22 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers
For example, a simple residential installation can be carried out by a domestic electrician without the Level 3 qualification required to be a registered electrician.
Other Key Attributes
If you’d rather be safe than sorry, it’s not a bad idea to opt for an over-qualified electrician. While this might be more expensive, it could be a small price to pay for peace of mind.
When reading reviews on trusted sites or asking friends and family for a recommendation, keep an eye out for these key traits.
However, remember that highly qualified electricians might be more in demand and may turn down simpler jobs.
Relevant Experience
Not all electricians have the same experience, so you should make sure that your chosen electrician has the right skills for the task at hand.
As well as being qualified for the job, there are many other attributes that separate a competent electrician from a great electrician.
The more of these your electrician has, the more likely they are to provide a great overall service... reliability, honesty, time management, communication, customer service, problem solving, attention to detail, patience.
Emergency Call Outs How do you find the best emergency electrician?
Commercial electrical work can often be extremely complex. These jobs may deal with large currents, dangerous locations or stricter regulatory practices and should only be handled by an electrician with commercial experience. If your job requires in-depth knowledge of particular types of machinery or electrical equipment, you should look for an electrician with prior experience in this sector.
When something needs fixing as a matter of urgency, you might not have time to check accreditations, read reviews and ask around for recommendations.
The best course of action is to find an emergency electrician before such a situation arises, so you can be sure of a reliable pair of hands when you need them. Research the electricians featured in the Local Answer and make a decision on who would be the best fit for the job you need doing.

Use calls to action (CTAs) to drive traffic
Compelling CTAs can help to get your message across and ultimately, encourage people to take action. That action could be visiting a specific page on your website, calling your number to book an appointment or visiting your shop in person, etc. A CTA can be placed in a digital format or in print. You could experiment with different wording here and see which ones get the most engagement. Examples of calls to action include ‘Claim your free XXX’, ‘Talk to us!’ and ‘Buy now (then give them a reason to)’.

Recipes
CHOCOLATE AND PEAR PUDDING INGREDIENTS
Serves about 10 For the chocolate cake: 200 g / 7 oz dark chocolate 225 g / 8 oz unsalted butter 225 g / 8 castor sugar pinch of salt 5 eggs separated. 1 x 23 cm / 9 inch springform cake tin base and sides lined with baking parchment For the poached pears: 4 – 6 firm pears peeled 1 vanilla pod For the mascarpone cream: 2 egg yolks 4 tablespoons castor sugar 150 ml Marsala Wine 2 x 250 g tubs Mascarpone To finish: 85 g / 3 oz grated chocolate 5 tablespoons strong coffee a large glass bowl
METHOD
To make the cake: Heat the oven to 150c / 130c fan / gas 2. Melt the chocolate and the butter together in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Take off the heat and allow to cool. Whisk the sugar and the eggs yolks together until thick, this could take 5 minutes. Fold in the chocolate mixture, using a metal spoon. Put the egg whites and the salt into another bowl and whisk till you get a medium peak, don’t let it go to dry. Fold the egg whites into the chocolate using the metal spoon. Spoon into the baking tin and bake for 1 1/2 hours. It will rise a lot then sink as it cools.
Cook the pears: Put the pears and the vanilla pod into a pan that will hold them in a single layer with about 1 litre of water. Gently poach the pears for about 20 minutes until they are tender. Leave to cool in the syrup. For the mascarpone cream: In a bowl over simmering water place the egg yolks the sugar and 6 tablespoons of the marsala. Whisk for 5 minutes until the mixture is thick and leaving a trail. Put the mascarpone into another bowl and beat in 2 tablespoons marsala to loosen. Whisk in the egg mixture a little at a time until smooth. All this can be done the day before you want to serve. To assemble: Spoon some of the mascarpone cream into the bottom of the bowl you are using to serve the pudding in. Cut the pears into eighths discarding the core, divide into three portions. Place one portion of pear onto of the cream layer and sprinkle with some of the grated chocolate. Cut the cake in half, it may well break up but don’t worry. It is a very gooey cake. Place one half on top of the pears, and spoon over some of the remaining marsala and a little of the coffee. Now spoon over more cream, top with another portion of pear and a grating of chocolate. Top with the second half of cake, use up any remaining marsala and coffee on the cake. Top with the remaining mascarpone cream, then with the remaining pears. Leave the remaining grated chocolate to once side to use just before serving. Cover with cling film and chill for at least 2 hours or up to 2 days.

TRY A MEAT-FREE MONDAY... HERBY MUSHROOMS AND GREENS In this New Year, how about trying a Meat-free Monday. You can change many of your usual recipes by exchanging the meat for meat-substitute or veg. For example, if making spaghetti bolognaise, use Quorn mince instead and just add a teaspoon or two of marmite to give it taste then add to your pasta sauce! If you want to get more adventurous you could try making lentil meatballs. This easy recipe is packed full of healthy veg and cooked using olive oil:
Herby Mushrooms and Greens (serves 2)
INGREDIENTS: 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 onion finely chopped 4 garlic cloves, finely diced 10g sun-dried tomatoes in oil, roughly chopped Leaves from 4 sprigs thyme
salt & pepper 50-100g mushrooms thinly sliced 100g frozen peas 100g sugar snap peas (or chopped broccoli) 50g spinach (or cabbage) finely chopped 50ml veg stock or 1tsp veg stock powder/stock cube in 50g water.
METHOD: Heat the oil over a medium heat, add the onions, garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, thyme and salt & pepper – fry for a few minutes. Add the mushrooms and fry till soft. Add peas, sugar snap peas or broccoli and cabbage (if using spinach put this in later). Add the stock, put lid on and cook till everything is done. Serve with bread, or add rice or beans to it to make a filling meal. Can take leftovers to work for lunch with salad.

Football - The 'Boro

ANOTHER NEW YEAR - ANOTHER NEW START. IT SEEMS THERE MIGHT BE A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2022!
T
he trouble with being an optimist is the inevitable disappointment you face when things don't go as expected. I've been a Middlesbrough fan since I was six years old so there have obviously been many, many occasions where expectations have been dashed and I've been left to wonder where it all went wrong. On the other hand, as I walked from my normal car parking spot to the Riverside to watch Chris Wilder's first home win against Swansea, I did my usual. I stood in front of the mural on the wall of the Shepherdson Way Bridge to the west of the stadium and for the umpteenth time read the ecstatic - almost delirious - words that Ali Brownlee exclaimed on what I still consider the best night of my life! I make no excuses for repeating them now.... “That is it. It’s Eindhoven. It’s Eindhoven. 'Boro have made it. One of the most glorious nights in the history of football. We go back to 1876, the Infant Hercules, fathomed out of the foundries of Teesside, mined out of the Eston Hills, we’re roaring all the way to Eindhoven and the UEFA Cup Final. It’s party, party, party. Everybody round my house for a parmo." If I live to be a hundred I know there will never be another night quite like that. Okay, the final turned out to be another damp squid yet somehow it didn't really matter. The two magnificent games against Basel and Steaua Bucharest in the quarter and semi final second legs had already been written into 'Boro's history as exceptional
occasions. And even if we'd beaten Sevilla at Eindhoven I don't seriously think it would have matched up to those two nights for sheer excitement and the best examples of making the most of your chances that I've ever seen. So now, as we start a New Year, we are writing another chapter into 'Boro's long and often turbulent history. Chris Wilder's first victory as 'Boro manager came in a truly sparkling performance at Huddersfield. His second - and first at home - came immediately after and was a complete contrast. Most fans in the stadium that Saturday must have known we were fairly lucky to get away with three points, but hey, that's football. In the previous two Wilder home games we were infinitely better yet only achieved a single point. Perhaps the most important factor, however, was a distinct feeling that the team were beginning to look like a team thanks to the Manager's consistent selections. Perhaps one of the most puzzling factors over the last few years (and indeed the last few managers) was that none of them seemed to know - or even believe they knew - what their best team was. And while because of injury problems Wilder's hands have been somewhat tied he nevertheless kept an unchanged side against Swansea even though his options were suddenly a lot better. In addition, the forward play from every member of the team has suddenly become a lot more positive. Sadly, the additional chances we are now creating are not yet leading to an improvement in the goals scored department, but surely that has to come. Good

suddenly becomes available and for some strange reason would be happy to move 'up north' in freezing January then I think we're probably going to have to rely on what we already have. But let's be honest, once everyone is fit and available and subject to the scrutiny and ideas that Chris Wilder has brought to the club in a very short space of time it's not really a bad squad. A definitely winnable game at Mansfield in the third round of the FA Cup would be a great start. So whether you're a 'glass half full' or a 'glass half empty' kind of person, the real truth is you can easily fill the glass back up again! So let's see what the next couple of months bring and continue to follow the team with the immense enthusiasm that's already been shown throughout the first few months. Whatever's happened on the pitch, the fans have been magnificent! I sincerely hope you all had the great Christmas you deserve and let me wish you a very happy and very successful 2022. I honestly believe it will be a great time to be a 'Boro fan!
Sudoku
results breed confidence and a confident player will automatically take more opportunities to get into goal scoring positions. And that is where my aforementioned optimism is beginning to once again rear its head because in the space of a few short games it is obvious that Chris Wilder is having an instant impact. Unfortunately Christmas print deadline means I am having to write this long before you are reading it but I'm pretty confident that by the time you do we will have continued to improve under Wilder and that the first league table of the new year will have a very different look to the one we saw at the beginning of December. I've said a few times that I'm not convinced that any player available in the January window is necessarily a good option because if they could genuinely improve our team they should be staying where they are and doing the same for their current employers. Anyone not already playing regularly shouldn't be an option because they would take too long to not only catch up but to have some sort of effect. So unless a real gem
