Advice on Choosing A Roofing Contractor
hen choosing a roofing contractor you should consider your choice very carefully and you are advised to check them out before employing them. If you employ a good reputable roofing contractor in terms of price, reliability and workmanship, the potential for problems will be greatly reduced. Also consider the following points: • Select up to three roofing contractors to look at the job. If possible, obtain recommendations from family, friends, neighbours or a reputable trade association. • Ask each of them to give advice on which materials they would suggest using. • Invite quotes from each contractor but do not automatically take the cheapest option. Base your choice on the quality of the advice given and your confidence in the contractor. • Ask for a guarantee on new or refurbishment work. NFRC recommend purchasing an Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) which back up, but are independent of, the contractor’s own guarantee. Remember that even the best contractors can go out of business whereupon their own guarantees become worthless, so make sure you will be covered. • Ensure that the quote or estimate Page 12
selected is given to you in writing except possibly for small emergency repairs. • Bear in mind that ‘estimates’ for refurbishment work can change once the chosen contractor has removed the main covering (e.g. tiles/ slates) to expose the sub-structure underneath. • Agree payment terms before the work commences. Be careful on upfront payments ensure you know what you are getting for any upfront payment. It may be difficult to get monies back. Contractors offering cash / VAT-free deals are not easily tracked down if things go wrong. • Don’t expect to obtain free advice from contractors, unless you have a real intention to assign the contract to them. • Remember that a property owner is responsible for any planning permission that may be required on that property. Please be aware that when carrying out refurbishment work to 50% or more of a roof's area that either a roofing contractor that is registered with the NFRC Competent Person Scheme must be employed or your Local Authority Building Control must be contacted prior to work starting. This is in order to confirm that the roof should be upgraded to meet thermal requirements of Part L of the current Building Regulations. Research the roofers featured in the Local Answer and make a decision on who would be the best fit for the job you need doing.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN - So Make Sure Your Car Is Ready For Winter!
L
ow winter temperatures and adverse weather conditions can make even the most basic trips in your car extremely hazardous - especially if you haven’t prepared well in advance. In November we can begin to expect poorer road conditions but with just a little bit of effort many of the problems can be alleviated before they even appear. Here are a few top tips from motoring experts to ensure a Winter of trouble free motoring and while you may think they are obvious observations it’s amazing how many people regret having ignored them! 1. Get your car serviced - This is probably the most obvious advice you can be given but it’s amazing how many people ignore it. While cold weather can cause many problems, up to half can be prevented by regular servicing and maintenance checks. Many garages offer free or discounted winter car checks and its certainly worth taking advantage of them to ensure you don’t get stuck miles from home in freezing conditions. 2. Check the battery - The battery should be the first priority because during the winter months it suffers from considerably more usage during cold temperatures. Increased use of lights, heater and blower all place it under additional strain, while on cold mornings it’s often the case that just starting the engine will take far longer than normal. Page 14
Batteries have an effective life of around five years and if you are having trouble starting the car on a cold morning that is the best place to start looking for the solution. Get it checked and replaced if necessary. 3. Top up engine coolant with antifreeze - Engine coolant in your radiator should be a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze and over a long hot summer your antifreeze can often be diluted further than is safe. People make the mistake of topping up just with water during the year, so the antifreeze gets over-diluted and freezes during very cold weather, often leading to the engine over-heating and consequently large repair bills. It’s therefore vital to top up with antifreeze before winter. 4. Check the condition of your tyres - As a car’s tyres are key to both steering and braking, it is essential they are in good condition, so have them checked for both pressure and tread depth. In snowy or freezing conditions it is essential to have good road grip and both factors are extremely important towards both your safety and that of other road users. The motor organisations recommend a minimum depth of 3mm during the winter, compared to the legal minimum of 1.6mm. You could also look at changing from summer to winter tyres, as these also offer increased grip in snow, slush or ice. 5. Check your lights - Check that all lights, indicators and rear reflectors are

Tip Four: Do all your cutting in and edges first. A pro painter, whether they are painting internally or externally, will concentrate on the edges, under windows, around door frames, corners and nooks and crannies first before applying the main bulk of the paint. If you try this, and then start on your main bit of the wall, you will find the whole job will go far quicker and will produce much better results. Always start from the top of any wall, and work downwards and only ever dip the brush about a quarter of the way into the pot, or excess paint will flow down the brush onto your fingers, plus you stand the chance of drips too. If you watch a pro painting contractor at work, take a closer look at his hands because the first thing you won’t see is paint all over them, it will be on the wall, where it is supposed to be! If you remember to put down dust sheets or old blankets, this also helps with a better job, after all, what is the point of spending two days painting and then another two days cleaning off all the paint spills and drips? Use masking tape and old newspaper and cover all window sills too. Tip five: If you want to paint like a pro, dress like a pro, act like a pro, think like a pro and you will be a pro. Some final thoughts…. A lot of the time it is down your mindset and how seriously you take each painting project. Learn from the trade, there is plenty more advice around the internet than the five points we are giving you here today. Make sure you wear overalls, or at best, old clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Always protect areas not to be painted from spills and drips. Keep all your tools in one place and clean them after use. Make sure if you are painting a room, do what the professional does and move all furniture out and of course take the pictures down and the lampshade if you are painting the ceiling. If you are painting or decorating externally, make sure you are confident with using ladders or scaffolding, clear away all plants and other obstructions against the wall. Make sure you do the correct preparation and take the task of painting seriously, for a quality expert paint finish that you can do!

Clean out the greenhouse

Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.
Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose Page 22
Prepare your soil for next year
For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should

add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.
Planting
Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed.

However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (two in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and free home-grown substitute for peat.
Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

Football - The 'Boro
THERE'S A DEGREE OF CONTRADICTION ABOUT BOTH THE CHAMPIONSHIP AND BORO'S RECENT PERFORMANCES
H
aving played 13 games this season ‘Boro’s 2-0 win over Barnsley (last night, as I write) is the first time they’ve won two in a row and while we are all well aware that such a statistic in no way constitutes a promotion challenge it has suddenly elevated us to within three points of a play-off place. After the despondency that followed the defeat at Hull that’s surely evidence of the absolute contradiction of both Middlesbrough FC and the Championship. It’s also why it remains one of the most exciting leagues in the world because literally anything can happen throughout the season and you simply can’t write off any team at any stage. On the way home from that defeat at Hull I could only contemplate what a difference a couple of good finishes would have made to the match and might eventually make to the season overall. We must have had at least four gilt edged chances to put Hull to the sword and yet all went begging. A piece of good fortune for Hull’s first goal and a second goal while we were wide open chasing the equaliser totally contradicted what had gone on in Page 28
the previous eighty minutes. Conversely, we go to the pretty poor game against Peterborough in which neither team showed a great deal until Peterborough were desperately unlucky not to have been given a penalty. ‘Boro did pick up a bit in the second half but good substitutions made all the difference in the last five minutes and we fortuitously ended up with three points we probably didn’t deserve. Last night against Barnsley was again a bit of an enigma, with an amazing miss by Duncan Watmore the pick of at least five good spurned opportunities. Andraz Sporar took his goal well and we scraped another late on, but while Barnsley could also have had a couple in the early stages they were totally outplayed for the rest of the night and our goal difference should have been considerably improved had both our accuracy and choice of pass been more decisive. Perhaps it was fortunate that in the middle of a dreadful injury crisis we came up against two struggling sides but in the past that has often meant more contradictory results when we have lost games we were expected to have won. Could it be, then, that these two wins have meant we’ve

turned the corner and can look for a bit more consistency? We’ll certainly find that out when we come up against a third struggling side in Cardiff. That returning managers often do well against a club they hold dear might well mean that Neil Warnock can at last pull off three wins in a row and what a difference that would make not only to the confidence of both players and fans but also to the look of the league table. Let’s hope it happens.
It’s definitely a possibility because it’s worth noting that in recent games the likes of Andraz Sporar and Martin Payero have begun to look as if they could make a real impact as they come to terms with the pace of the championship. We know how good Sol Bamba has been before his illness but his inclusion in the face of the current injury situation has been an absolute revelation and just one big reason for

the two wins. On the way to the Barnsley match, incidentally, I thoroughly enjoyed the replay on Tees Radio of the wonderful interview with Sol conducted by Mark Drury. Originally aired on October 6th it was a great insight into a really lovely man. If you haven’t heard it then seek it out on the Tees Radio site. It’s well worth a listen! There is, of course, a long way still to go and with almost a whole defence out injured things, as they say, can only get better, even though the irony of having two clean sheets with a makeshift defence should be clear to everyone. But let’s just wait and see what the next few games bring. Who knows, by this time in November we might once again be talking up the promotion possibilities. How good would that be?
