ow that the election is all over and it’s once again politically correct to look on politicians as actual objects of mirth instead of merely potential ones we thought we would share a few great stories we’ve heard recently that couldn’t have been published pre-election. One of the tragedies of elections is that it doesn’t matter who you vote for, the Government always seems to get in. Ed Miliband was skating on a frozen pond when the ice gave way and he fell in. Three small boys rushed to his aid and managed between them to pull him out. ‘You’ve just saved my life,’ says Miliband, ‘what can I possibly do to repay you all’? The first little lad says ‘Gosh, I’d love a new bike.’ The second little lad says ‘I could do with a new ‘Boro football kit.’ The third says ‘I would like a motorised wheelchair.’ Miliband looks at him and says why would you possibly want one of those’? ‘Cos,’ says the little lad, ‘when my dad finds out what I’ve just done for you I’ll bloody well need one!’ Politicians and babies’ nappies should both be changed regularly.... and for the same reason! During the recent election three guys are sitting in a pub. One looks at his newspaper and sighs. The second also looks at his newspaper and he too sighs. The third snorts in exasperation and says ‘Bugger this, If you two are going to discuss politics, I’m off!’ A politician is in bed asleep with his wife when a massive bolt of lightning illuminates the entire room. The politician jumps up in a panic and shouts ‘I’ll buy the negatives, I’ll buy the negatives!’ Page 22
The Prime Minister left today for a tour of Britain’s friendly countries. He’s expected back tomorrow. The big difference between the British Government and the Mafia is that one of them is organised. The saddest thing about this country’s politics is that everyone who really knows how to run the country is either driving a taxi or cutting hair! A man walks up to a politician at a party and said ‘I’ve heard a lot about you.’ The politician replied ‘You may have but you’ll never prove any of it!’ Two local councillors are attending a meeting at the Town Hall. One says to the other ‘Have you heard of George Pringle?’ ‘No,’ said the second chap, ‘why do you ask?’ ‘Because,’ was the reply, ‘if you’d bothered to attend a few more Council meetings, you’d know he’s now in charge of the Borough sewage works. ‘In that case,’ says the second guy, ‘do you know who Fred Harris is’? ‘No’ said the first, ‘who’s he’? ‘Well,’ said the second, ‘if you’d attended a lot less Council meetings you’d know he’s the bloke who’s been sleeping with your wife!’ Two politicians are having a discussion on finance. The first says to the second ‘There are many ways to make money, but there is only one really honest way to do it.’ ‘And what would that be’? asks his political opponent? ‘Yeah,’ said the first, ‘I had a feeling you wouldn’t know!’ And finally .... It’s interesting to note that the word ‘politics’ was probably derived from two different languages. In Latin ‘poli’ means ‘many.’ In English, ‘tics’ means ‘blood sucking creatures.’ ...... D
eadhead Delphiniums and Lupins once they finish flowering to promote a further flush later. Cut back hardy geraniums, heucheras and oriental poppies hard back. This will give some fresh foliage and maybe more flowers. Put houseplants out in the garden for their ‘summer holiday’. Remember to take them back in during September before any frosts. Once there has been a dry spell, give a coat of colour/preservative to fences, sheds and decking. Rhododendrons, lilacs and hydrangeas can be dead headed but be careful not to cut too far back, merely taking just the blooms. Hoe off any annual weeds but perennial weeds should be dug out making sure you take out all the root. Keep hostas and other tender plants safe from slugs and snails. You can get a slug killer that is not harmful to wildlife or you can use beer traps, crushed egg shells or used coffee grounds. Keep hanging baskets, containers and any newly planted shrubs or perennials well watered. Take time out not only to walk round the garden hopefully every day to keep an eye on everything but most importantly SIT and ENJOY! Page 28
Lawns Mow the lawn more often now, usually at least once a week and reduce the cutting height if the weather is not too hot. If you have any movable features on the lawn, such as tables, chairs, children’s toys or animals like rabbits in runs, make sure they are moved on a regular basis so the grass underneath can green up again. If you have not already weeded and fed the lawn it is still not too late to apply a combined weed and feed. A new lawn should be watered in dry spells to stop the turf from shrinking and failing to knit together and also water seed sown lawns to encourage growth. If you have a lot of grass clippings put them on the compost heap in stages so that the compost does not go slimy.
Fruit and Vegetables Place straw or black polythene under strawberries to protect from rain splashes and slugs. Place netting supported by raised canes to protect fruit from birds if you don’t yet have a fruit cage. After the June drop of apple trees, if the apples still look too crowded thin them out to give better sized fruits that will ripen all the way round. June 2015 | The Local Answer Magazine

Keep picking rhubarb so that it does not have a chance to go to seed. Train in the new canes of raspberries and blackberries by tying them in to say the left whilst the older canes are pulled to the right. Early potatoes should be ready to dig now and maincrop ones will need earthing up. Sow more lettuce, radish and beetroot in succession through the month. Train tomato plants as they grow and pinch out the side shoots from cordon grown ones. Run string attached at each end to posts to support broad beans as they grow and pinch out the growing tips to discourage black fly. Keep all vegetable growing areas free from weeds.
Wildlife Roses that produce hips should not be hard pruned so that the hips may be left for the birds to enjoy as well as being decorative.

Leave a part of the garden untended, behind the shed is a good place, where wildlife can be safe. Any nettles can be cut back to provide fresh growth. Put the cuttings on the compost heap. Make sure you have plenty of marginal planting around a wildlife pond as the tadpoles will be getting their legs and seeking shelter amongst plants at the side of the pond. Put up a bat nesting box in a sunny position to encourage bats who will eat midges etc.

umour comes in many forms but it’s amazing how many rib-tickling stories emerge from the attitude of families to each other. Here’s some great examples... A magician had just completed an absolutely astounding trick that baffled everyone and a man in the audience called out “that was amazing, can you tell me how you did it?” “Sorry,” said the magician. If I told you I’d have to kill you.” “In that case,” said the man, “can you tell my wife?” “Hi! My name is Gertrude,” said the lady next to a stranger on the plane. “It’s so nice to meet you! I’m flying to New York for my grandson’s third birthday. I’m so excited! I remember when he was just born and tiny and now he’s already three! It’s really hard to believe. He’s the most adorable thing you’ve ever seen! You know what? Hold on, I think I might have a picture on me. Let me take a look in my purse, yes, here it is, just look at him, isn’t he adorable. Do you see his dimple on his left cheek? Simply adorable! I could stare at his picture all day. Oh my, and you should hear him on the phone! He is just the cutest, he says to me in the cutest voice “Hi Grandma!” It just gets me all teary eyed.” After what seemed like two hours for the poor man sitting next to her, Gertrude seemed to realize that perhaps she was talking a bit too much. “You know, I feel terrible! Here I am just talking and talking without letting you get in a word in edgeways! Tell me, what do you think about my Grandson?” A husband and wife were arguing and she yelled “ You hate my relatives don’t you?” “Not at all,” said the husband. “In fact, I like Page 32
your mother-in-law more a lot more than I like mine.” Two Glaswegians, Archie and Jimmy, are sitting in the pub discussing Jimmy’s forthcoming wedding. “Och, it’s all goin’ pure brilliant,” says Jimmy. “A’ve got everythin’ organised awready, the fluers, the church, the cars, the reception, the rings, the meenister, even ma stag night”. Archie nods approvingly. “I’ve even bought a kilt to be married in!” continues Jimmy. “A kilt?” exclaims Archie, “That’s braw, you’ll look pure smairt in that. Whit’s the tartan?” “Och,” says Jimmy, “A’d imagine she’ll be in white !” Harry was getting married and was very excited about the forthcoming big day. He was on his way out of the office when his boss came over to him with an outstretched hand, “congratulations Harry, I just wanted to tell you I’ve been married for twenty two years, and I am sure that you will always remember this day with the fondest of memories, as the happiest day of your life.” “But sir”, said Harry, “a little bit confused, I’m not getting married until tomorrow!” “Yeah, I know”, said his boss. Two blokes were reminiscing about their sons and one said “I well remember taking my son to the pub for his first drink. I bought him a pint of bitter but he didn’t like it so I drank it. Then I bought him a pint of lager and he didn’t like that either so I drank it. I tried him on spirits and he didn’t like whiskey, rum, brandy, vodka or gin either so I had to drink them all myself. BIG STEPS FORWARD WHATEVER THE RESULT!
A
t the moment of writing I’m preparing for my trip to Wembley with a mixture of excitement and trepidation and by the time this is published we will all know which of them was justified. It’s difficult to describe how important the game is for the team that prevails on the day but whatever the result we have to look back on the last ten months as an enormous breakthrough for ‘Boro. Since Aitor Karanka’s arrival the club has only gone in one direction and although we didn’t make automatic promotion there isn’t a realistic ‘Boro fan around that could have possible forecast our current position at the start of the season. That it’s been achieved with a bunch of young players who - with the exception of Patrick Bamford - have arrived from comparatively unfashionable clubs and were hitherto almost unknown is a remarkable tribute to the management skills of the very likeable Spaniard. That said, there is also a wonderfully uplifting atmosphere running throughout the whole club and the unbelievable Page 36
success that has emanated from the much heralded academy under the guidance of the also very likeable David Parnaby is both amazing and fantastic. And from that we could possibly take some real confidence because the last time ‘Boro succeeded in a major final - who could forget that wonderful day in Cardiff? - the FA Youth Cup was also lifted by the club in the same season. This year, both the under 18s and the under 21s have won their respective divisions to show not only the real strength that is running throughout the club but also the tremendous spirit that exists among the entire group of players. ‘Boro’s under 18s will compete in next season’s Under 19s Champion’s League after they were crowned National Champions above the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Everton. An unbelievable result and one that because of ‘Boro’s previous success in bringing young players into the first team - augers really well for the development of the club bearing in mind the financial June 2015 | The Local Answer Magazine

restrictions that now exist. The under 21s finished their season as champions of the Premier League Under 21s second division and are now promoted to their own version of the promised land. So, if we’re now in the Premiership let’s look forward to an exciting season of continued development. If not, then we have to look to going one better next time around. Either way, it’s pretty certain that the very thorough Aitor Karanka will have plans in hand to strengthen accordingly, though if Ben Gibson and Adam Reach’s performances this season are anything to go by he may have potential strength in depth in the club already. In the meantime I shall keep the prayers coming and the fingers crossed in the hope that by the time you read this we are once again a Premiership Club. It would be thoroughly deserved after a magnificent season.
