Is Your Conservatory TOO HOT TOO COLD In The Summer?

Why invest in a New Home Conservatory Roof? We are approximately 75% cheaper (better priced) than replacing your existing roof. HOW? 1. We insulate and improve the energy efficiency of your conservatory ceiling from the inside of your conservatory. 2. We do not replace your existing conservatory roof. Our Solution: We use an interior lightweight guaranteed insulated system that will keep your conservatory COOL in the Summer and WARM in

In The Winter?

the Winter. This guaranteed installation is carried out in 1 day with the minimum of disruption to you. We only insulate the interior conservatory ceiling and transform your conservatory into a living space that can be used by you to enjoy 365 days a year - even when the sun is shining for hours or heavy snow is on the ground. There is no change to the external appearance of your conservatory roof. How many times during the winter period have you wasted energy and money by allowing

the heat from a radiator or electric fan to escape through the conservatory roof? Why are you wasting expensive heating? WE HAVE THE SOLUTION Compare our price to a new conservatory roof - taking up to 3/4 days to complete with all the household disruption and noise that occurs. For further information, telephone 07979 867550 or 01642 386009.

In The Garden

S

weep your patio areas regularly and treat any small weeds with a systemic weed killer as they germinate. Hoe weeds from gravel areas and treat with a residual weed killer to prevent more weed seeds from germinating. Damp down the floor of your greenhouse after you have watered in the morning. This keeps the humidity high but also lowers the temperature during hot weather. Clean out your water butts if they have been emptied, to remove sludge and algae in the bottom. Patio and Container Gardening Keep an eye out for ants setting up home in the base of planted containers and treat accordingly to stop them undermining roots so that the plants dry out from the base. Treat all of your permanent container plantings with a biological control for Vine Weevil larvae. They can devastate plants in pots if not kept in check. Round up any empty containers and give them a scrub out in preparation for autumn and winter bedding plants. Bulbs and Perennials Remove side buds from Dahlias as they

develop to get a single, larger flower for cutting. Continue to cut down stems on perennials as they finish flowering. Chop these up and add to your compost heaps. Divide summer flowering perennials as they finish flowering. Dig up the clumps and replant some of the younger, more vigorous growth. Cut Oriental Poppies and Border Geraniums to the ground, leaves and all, after they have flowered. Mulch around the crowns and water well. Many of the Geraniums will flower again in autumn. Trees and Shrubs Summer prune shrubs by removing two thirds of the long, upright growths that have developed since the spring. Feed Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Pieris and Camellias with a suitable granular fertilizer such as Vitax Conifer and Shrub. Water this in well and make sure that these plants do not go short of water now, whilst they are forming next year’s flower buds. Trim Lavender bushes after flowering to remove the dead flower spikes. Summer prune Wisteria by taking any long, unwanted growths back to five or six leaf buds.

PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers Trim hedges that are becoming untidy – the final cut can be done in early autumn. Sowing and Planting Sow seeds of perennials that need a frost to germinate. Leave them outside in a cold frame or in a cold green house until they begin to germinate next spring. Take tip cuttings of woody herbs such as Rosemary and Sage to replace any old plants next spring. Peg down runners on Strawberry plants into pots of compost or soil. These can be severed from the parent plant once they have rooted.

Lawns Continue to cut your lawn as required. Leave the grass clippings on the lawn to help retain moisture if the weather is very dry. Spot treat weeds as they appear with Verdone or another ready to use lawn weed killer. Dig out the roots and fill the hole with gritty compost to encourage the grass to re-grow. The Vegetable Garden Pinch out the tips of Runner beans once they have reached the top of their poles. Transplant Leeks to their final positions once they are the thickness of a pencil. Harvest crops regularly as they become available to keep your plants productive. Finish summer pruning side shoots on trained apples, back to four or five leaf buds. Wildlife Deadhead Buddleja bushes to keep them flowering into the autumn. The new flowers will be smaller but are an important food for bees and other insects. Make sure that you keep a bird bath topped up with fresh water. Place it in an open position but near cover so that birds can spot danger and avoid it. Leave seed heads on some of your plants as extra food for birds and small mammals. Leave some windfall fruit on the ground as a tasty treat for wildlife.

HUGE IMPROVEMENTS ON THE NEW PEUGEOT 508

L

et’s be honest, the Peugeot 508 has never been particularly considered a style icon, or for that matter a car that has ever attracted much interest or excitement. But that was before.... Now, however, Peugeot have launched a radical new fastback version that features great design and a range of advanced technological features that provide an outstanding driving experience. The company’s designers have switched the 508 from a saloon to a stylish fastback for this second generation launch, an obvious attempt to battle against rapidly growing SUV sales. The new 508, which was revealed at last year’s Geneva motor show, gets a new 5-door body style with a low, dynamic shape, aggressive front end and steely, muscular style that gives it both sportiness and elegance. With sculptured lines, finely detailed grille and stylish new light clusters with daytime running lights that sweep down vertically into the spoiler at the front and snuggle beautifully into the rear spoiler and bumper the new version looks great. It’s lower and shorter than its predecessor which gives a more sporty look and inside

and out the car has been upgraded in terms of both quality and efficiency. Steering is light and quick and the car corners well and handles securely. There’s a choice of two 1.6-litre Puretech petrol engines in the 508, with 179bhp and 221bhp, while the BlueHDi diesels are a 129hbp 1.5-litre unit and two 2.0-litre units with 161bhp and 174bhp. With the exception of the six speed 1.5-litre diesel where automatic is an option, the rest all come with an eight speed automatic gearbox as standard. That said, the 1.5 diesel is still the most economical version and with the auto box fitted it has an official average fuel economy of 76.3mpg and CO2 emissions of just 98g/km. Eventually - though apparently not until late 2019 - there’ll also be a plug-in hybrid version that will combine a 179bhp petrol engine with an electric motor. Internally, the car is also extremely stylish, with the small steering wheel sitting below eye level giving full view of the instrument panel. Analogue dials have been replaced by a 12.3in digital instrument display with separate standard 8.0in touchscreen handling the infotainment system and satnav. Below that are a series of large pianokey switches that control items like heated

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers rear window, heated seats and stop-start functions. You also get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, plus wireless smartphone charging. And you can also specify a 360deg camera and a selfparking function. Additional interior features on offer include massaging front seats, as many as four USB ports, a panoramic sunroof and a vast array of interior storage options. Despite the fact that the new version is shorter than the previous model, there’s still plenty of space, with a comfortable and electrically adjustable driver’s seat and excellent steering wheel adjustments. It’s not quite as spacious for rear passengers, however, mainly because of the sloping roof, but it still takes three adults for shorter rides. It would, however, become a little uncomfortable for them on very long journeys. The new five-door shape makes it more practical as well, with a larger hatchback boot opening giving excellent access and good storage capacity. Safety-wise there’s automatic emergency

braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control and blindspot monitoring. There’s also a new optional night vision function that uses an infrared camera to detect potential hazards in the dark. Four trim levels are available. Active, which comes handsomely equipped with dualzone climate control, 17in alloy wheels and sat-nav; Allure, which adds electric front seats and the larger touchscreen; GT Line, which gets LED headlights and 18in alloys; and fully loaded GT. There’s also a pricey, limited-run First Edition spec. After all that it hardly needs saying that the new 508n is a huge improvement on the older version with more style, more comfort and much more refinement. Prices for the base models look pretty good, too, with prices starting at around £25,000. If your choice is in that kind of price bracket it’s certainly worth a look!

Healthy Eating SPICY GRILLED CHICKEN (OR QUORN FILLET) WRAPS

O

n days where you don’t feel like cooking or just fancy something easy and healthy, try these spicy wraps. You need to make the marinade 2 hours ahead or you can even make it the night before and leave it in the fridge until you’re ready to make the recipe. When you’re ready to make it, the recipe only takes around 20 minutes. Chicken is low fat and a good source of protein, if you’re vegetarian, quorn is also good for protein, low fat and a source of fibre. The spices used in the recipe can be found in your local Indian grocery store: fenugreek, cumin and fennel are all good for your digestive system. RECIPE 2 tsp fenugreek seeds, 2 tsp fennel seeds, 2 tsp cumin seeds, 2 garlic cloves finely chopped, 1 tsp cayenne pepper or paprika, grated zest and juice of 1 lemon, tsp salt, 2 tablespoon greek style natural yogurt (optional), 4 skinless boneless chicken

fillets (about 6oz each) or 6 quorn fillets, 2 tablespoons olive oil, black pepper Heat a frying pan over low heat until hot. Add the fenugreek, fennel and cumin seeds and toast for 2-3 minutes (don’t burn) until they give off an aroma. Cool then crush in a pestle and mortar or grind in a coffee grinder. Tip into a bowl and add garlic, cayenne/ paprika, lemon zest, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, teaspoon of salt and yogurt if using. Slash the chicken or quorn all over using a sharp knife and put into a dish. Rub this marinade all over, cover and leave in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight. When ready to eat, heat the grill and put foil on baking tray. Drizzle the marinated chicken or quorn with olive oil. Grill till cooked (20 minutes for chicken, less for quorn), turning halfway through. When cool, tear into shreds and serve in wraps drizzled with yogurt (or tahini sauce if using quorn and vegetarian), with slices of tomato and lettuce.

Summer Holiday Fun A FEW FUNNY TALES FROM THE ANNUAL TRIPS

W

e all love our summer holidays in the sun but there’s always a funny story or two that emanate from the trips to Butlin’s, the Algarve, Benidorm or wherever your holiday takes you. We’ve managed to collate a few for your amusement. We still hope, however, that you enjoy (or have enjoyed) your holiday even if none of these apply to you!

When Bill arrived back from his holiday his work colleague Jim was keen to know how he had enjoyed it. ‘How did you find the weather?’ he asked. ‘Well,’ said Bill, ‘I just went outside and there it was!’ A lady was taking her first ever flight to go on holiday and the air hostess was giving the usual safety demonstration. It being a long distance flight emergency parachutes were provided and after explaining how to put them on and use them she was asked by the first time flyer “If our chute doesn’t open, and the reserve doesn’t open, how long do we have until we hit the ground?” The hostess looked at her and with a perfectly deadpan expression answered, “The rest of your life.” The youth of today will never know what it felt like to have to pay a fortune then wait for about three days to eventually find out that all the photographs you took on your holidays really sucked! Friends of ours went on holiday recently and returned to the hotel where they’d spent their wedding night. ‘Did you enjoy it?’ I asked. ‘Not really, said the husband, ‘this time it was me who stayed in the bathroom and cried.’ We went to Blackpool this year and a van on the promenade had ‘Hot Dogs at Popular Prices’ emblazoned across the front. I was quite hungry so I bought one and was asked for five pounds. ‘What?’ I shouted at the stall holder, ‘your sign says ‘popular prices.’ ‘Well,’ he said, ‘I like them’ .... It was his first night on holiday and after drinking heavily at the local bar the drunken

man headed off to his hotel and went up to his suite. Several minutes later, the drunk staggers back to the reception desk and demands his room be changed. “But sir,” said the clerk, “you have the best room in the hotel.”“I insist on another room!!!” said the drunk. “Very good, sir. I’ll change you from 502 to 525. Would you mind telling me why you don’t like 502?” asked the clerk. “Well, for one thing,” said the drunk, “it’s on fire.” A man arrived at a seaside hotel where he had made a reservation rather late at night. All the lights were out, so he knocked on the door. After a long time a light appeared in an upstairs window and a woman called out, “Who are you? What do you want?” “I’m staying here!” said the man. “Please yourself,” she retorted, and slammed the window shut! A Scotsman was having a tough time lugging his lumpy, oversized travel bag onto the plane. Helped by a flight attendant, he finally managed to stuff it in the overhead bin. “Do you always carry such heavy luggage?” she sighed. “Never again,” the man said. “Next time, I’m riding in the bag, and my wife can buy the ticket!” A tourist was being led through the swamps of Florida. “Is it true,” he asked, “that an alligator won’t attack you if you carry a flashlight?”“That depends,” replied the guide, “on how fast you carry the flashlight.” Two tourists were driving through Louisiana. As they were approaching Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town’s name. They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one tourist asked the employee, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are... very slowly?” The girl leaned over the counter and said, “Burrrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiing.”

Football

THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WILL DECIDE A LOT!

P

re-season friendly matches are a bit of an enigma because when you win them all you tell yourself that winning regardless of the quality of the opposition - is a good habit to get into and sets you up in a confident mood for the first real game of the season. Conversely - and because in ‘Boro’s case so far the results have been extremely average - (Accrington Stanley - who the hell’s Accrington Stanley?) you tell yourself that such games are meaningless and purely there to build up fitness before the not too easy trip to Millwall. Whichever way you look at it, it’s the performances of the two teams in that particular game that could well define how the season might go. OK, it might be silly to read any kind of season-long forecast into just one result - especially the first of the season but in this case we are going to learn a great deal from the trip to the Den. Millwall performed admirably last season and at one time looked to be closing in on a promotion place only to fall at the last hurdle. ‘Boro, on the other hand, reached the playoffs but failed to negotiate the tricky double header with ‘Villa. So which team will be able to progress from last year’s optimistic performances to look a threat in this one? A great deal will depend on the comings and the goings in the next couple of weeks because when you combine the fact that the

World Cup has just ended with the rather early conclusion to this summer’s transfer window you know that a great deal is going to happen during that time. Deadlines mean that this is being written with those two weeks just about to start but in ‘Boro’s case a lot more depends on who we can keep rather than who we can buy. With the limited finances available it’s hard to see anyone coming in who can make an enormous and immediate impact so keeping Traore and Gibson - the two most associated with Premier League interest - could turn out to be an essential ingredient to a successful season. All the noises coming from the riverside suggest that Adama is quite happy to stay given his excellent relationship with Tony Pulis that is obviously built on Pulis’ own admiration of Traore’s character and ability. Ben Gibson’s situation is slightly different because it’s fairly well documented that he was disappointed not to have been snapped up by a premiership club last season. Who knows, had he actually gone to West Brom they might still have been a Premier League club. Southampton seem to be the most obvious suitors this time around and the purchase of Aden Flint might indicate that Pulis is resigned to life without the Chairman’s nephew. Money obviously talks and if the price is right every player can be considered a saleable asset. He’s

a ‘Boro boy through and through though and if he did leave it would probably be as big a wrench for him as it would for his fans even if he was furthering his career. The fact that Martin Braithwaite is now back and in training could actually be an advantage, though, because many thought he had the kind of ability that could win us matches. Unfortunately it doesn’t look as though Tony Pulis is among his admirers so he may well be on the move again after a reasonable World Cup. Pulis obviously isn’t too keen on Assombalonga either so he may well be another one on the way elsewhere. It all remains to be seen and that last day pantomime could see a completely different scenario emerge. So, let’s see what the next two weeks - and the last day circus of the transfer window - bring and what changes will be visible when we kick off at the Den. Whatever the personnel involved, though, let’s hope for a really positive start. Have a great season!
