In The Garden
R
egularly remove any fallen leaves from borders and lawns to prevent the spread of over wintering pests and diseases. If you have a greenhouse clear it out and give it a good clean. Remove any painted glass shading and install plastic bubble wrap for insulation. Remove any remaining summer bedding from both containers and borders and replace with plants such as pansies, bellis and wallflowers that will see you through to the spring. Pot up prepared hyacinth bulbs to have flowers at Christmas and New Year. Make sure all planted containers are raised off the ground with pot feet so that they drain well in rainy weather. Continue to plant spring flowering bulbs, except tulips, so that you have a succession of flowers. If you choose the right varieties you can have bulbs in flower from January to May. Net your pond to prevent falling leaves going in and decomposing in the water. Prune bush roses by half to prevent them rocking in very windy weather which can loosen them at their roots. Also prune climbing roses now.
Lawns Keep as many leaves off the lawn as possible to prevent them blocking out light and air and damaging the grass. This is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress the lawn if it was not done in September. If the weather is very wet keep off the lawn as much as possible. If the grass is still growing it is fine to carry on mowing.
Fruit and Vegetables Lift and divide old rhubarb crowns that are more than five years old. Make sure that all the divisions have two or more fat pink buds. After preparing the ground really well you can plant new fruit trees and bushes now. Prune out any diseased or dead shoots on apple and pear trees and collect any fallen fruits or dead fruits on the trees. It is important to maintain hygiene in the fruit garden to prevent the spread of diseases. Remove yellow foliage and unwanted runners from strawberry plants and also any plants that look as if they are diseased. Sow over wintering broad beans. It helps if you can cover them with fleece to stop pigeons getting at them.
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers Plant out spring cabbages and these need netting to protect from pigeons. Clear your old pea and bean plants by cutting off the tops to add to the compost heap. The roots can be dug back into the ground to provide extra nitrogen to the soil. Dig over any vacant areas of the vegetable garden and leave for the frost to break down the clods into finer particles.
Wildlife Always keep your bird bath clean and topped up with fresh water. If there is a very cold spell and the water is frozen over it is very important to keep the bird bath free of ice as it usually means all other water supplies will be frozen too and yours may be the only drinking water they can find. Any type of bird food can now be used as the breeding season is over. Leave a heap of leaves in a sheltered corner of the garden for hibernating mammals and insects, which will attract ground feeding birds. If you have an old ivy plant do not cut it back now as it will provide late nectar for insects.
Looking Good This Month Acer Varieties - Brilliant foliage turning yellow, bronze or red. Anemone Hybrida - Japanese anemone. Tall stems with white or pink flowers. Colchicum - Autumn crocus/naked ladies as the flower appears without leaf. Malus Varieties - Crab apple trees with colourful fruits. Nerine Bowdenii - Masses of pink blooms on naked stems. Parthenocissus - Virginia creeper with leaves turning fiery red. Physalis - Cape gooseberry or Chinese lantern. Papery red lanterns. Pyracantha Schizostylis - Kaffir lily. Exotic looking gladiolus type flowers. Sorbus varieties - Rowan. Large clusters of bright red fruits.

FOCUS ENTHUSIASTS WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED
W
e’ve recently examined the new, upgraded versions of both the Ford Fiesta and the Ford Ka and now it’s the turn of the new Focus. Traditionally the avid driver’s choice in the family hatchback sector, the latest Focus and its many improvements will most certainly uphold that status. The launch of this fourth-generation family hatchback reveals a number of improvements including a more curved interior, a longer, lower body style and increased space for both occupants and luggage. All this innovation will sit on new underpinnings that Ford claim are both stiffer and lighter. With clean lines, a sleek layout and sophisticated look, the interior of the all-new Focus is more comfortable, spacious and chic than ever before. Fewer buttons, more soft-touch materials and a superb new-look dashboard that features an 8.0in touch screen that runs Ford’s latest Sync 3 infotainment software all add to the excitement of the drive. And now you can stay connected wherever you are. The optional new FordPass Connect
modem* brings you a range of invaluable features such as Live Traffic, Wi-Fi hotspot and eCall. Download the FordPass App on your smartphone and you can access even more FordPass Connect features. For example, remote locking & unlocking, remote starting (auto transmission only), vehicle location, and more. Ford say that this all new Focus is designed to improve the driving experience in every way and have packed it with other advanced features like Ford Co-Pilot360, an impressive set of Driver Assist Technologies like Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go and Lane Centring as well as Park Assist 2. ‘All technologies that’ - claim Ford - ‘are so effortless and so useful that we will wonder how we ever managed without them.’ The All-New Focus is available with a range of powerful and highly fuel-efficient engines, all complemented by a six-speed manual or a new eight-speed automatic. Options include a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit with 84bhp, 99bhp or 123bhp. There’s also a new 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 148bhp or 180bhp. Diesel buyers
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers can choose from a 94bhp 1.5-litre or 148bhp 2.0-litre engine. The new and improved 1.0 and 1.5 litre Ford EcoBoost 3-cylinder petrol engines are designed to give the kind of power you’d expect from much larger engines because Ford EcoBoost technology delivers performance that’s smooth, responsive and rewarding. To make them even more efficient, both engines now feature cylinder deactivation. This shuts off a cylinder when torque demand is low, such as on a motorway. When torque demand increases, the cylinder springs back to life to give you the power you need. Safety-wise the car is really well equipped with - in addition to the driver and passenger front airbags - there are also side airbags that provide thorax protection and are designed to direct the occupant away from the impact area. They’re also able to raise the arm of the occupant providing better space between them and the intruding structure. Curtain airbags provide maximum coverage and headrests offer protection from whiplash.
There are also front and rear seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters, seatbelt reminders for all seats, and a display that shows which occupied seats don’t have their seatbelts fastened. It is also designed to help keep young children safe and secure on every journey, coming as it does with rear ISOFIX child seat attachment points allowing you to easily fit two child seats. Prices for this latest Focus start from £17,930, which is a saving of more than £2000 on the old car.

Healthy Eating - A Treat! LEMON MERINGUE PIE
I
f you eat healthily most of the time, you can afford to give yourself a treat now and then, that is when I make this delicious Lemon Meringue Pie. There are not many ingredients and it’s easy to make. You can make your own shortcrust pastry or buy shop bought.
Recipe Pastry: 6oz plain flour, 3oz butter (or margarine), water to bind. Filling: 2 large lemons (with the zest and juice separated), 10 fluid oz water, 3 tablespoons cornflour, 2oz sugar, 2 large egg yolks, 1½ oz butter or margarine Topping: 2 large egg whites, 4oz sugar To make the pastry, rub the butter into the flour until in resembles breadcrumbs. Add water bit by bit until you have a firm dough. Roll out the pastry to fit a pie/flan tin. Heat the oven to gas mark 6. Bake the pastry blind (this means putting greaseproof paper over the pastry and adding some baking beans so that the pastry doesn’t shrink or bubble up), bake it for 10 mins with paper on and then 10 mins with the paper and beans taken out. Take it out of the oven and reduce to oven heat to gas mark 2.

Make the filling – mix the cornflour, sugar and some of the water to a paste. Set aside. Pour the rest of the water and lemon zest into a pan, heat to boiling and then pour in the cornflour mixture – stirring rapidly so no lumps are formed. Heat for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and whisk in the egg yolk, lemon and butter. Spread this into the pastry case. Make the topping – whisk egg whites and sugar until it forms stiff peaks. Put the topping into the flan case on top of the filling, use the back of a spoon to tap on the topping to form little peaks. Cook for 45 minutes. ‘Healthy Eating’ courtesy of Sue Lorrimer.

A FEW GREAT STORIES FOR ANIMAL LOVERS
W
e’re known in this country to be a nation of animal lovers and we certainly show a hugely loving and sympathetic attitude to most of them - especially the more cuddly varieties. To celebrate that trait amongst the majority of typical Brits, we’ve put together a few nice little tales that might amuse you. Enjoy! A baby camel goes to see his mother and asks her “Mummy, why do we have a hump on our back? “ His mother replies “It’s so we can store water so we won’t dehydrate during those long hot summers when we don’t get any rain my darling.” The baby camel then asks “And why do we have hooves?” “Ah,” said his mother,” it’s so we can safely walk along all the really rocky paths without hurting our feet.”“And why do we have big eyelids?” asks the baby. “It’s to prevent the sand from entering our eyes when it blows from the desert.” replies the mother “Oh, Ok” says the baby, and looking round he says “But Mummy, what good is all that to us in Chester Zoo?” Then there’s the little polar bear who approached his parents and asked ‘Mummy, Daddy, am I really a polar bear?’‘Of course you are darling,’ said his mother. A couple of days later he again approached them and said ‘I know I’ve already asked you this but am I really, really a polar bear?’ ‘Yes,’ of course you are,’ answered his father. Why do you keep asking? ‘Because,’ said the little fellow, ‘I’m bloody freezing.’ A dog walks into a butcher shop and the butcher asks, “What do you want?” The dog points to steak in a glass case. “How many pounds?” The dog barks twice. “Anything else?” The dog points to some pork chops and barks four times. So the butcher wraps up a two-pound steak and four pork chops, and places the bag in the dog’s mouth. He then takes money from a purse tied around the dog’s neck, and sees him out. A customer, who has been watching in amazement, follows the dog to a house several blocks away, where it rings the doorbell to be let in. As the owner appears at the door, the customer says, “What a remarkable dog!”“Remarkable?” snorts the owner. “This is the second time this week he’s forgotten his keys.”
Late one night a burglar broke into a house and while he was sneaking around he heard a voice say, “Jesus is watching you.” He looked around and saw nothing. He kept on creeping and again heard, “Jesus is watching you.” In a dark corner, he saw a cage with a parrot inside. The burglar asked the parrot, “Was it you who said Jesus is watching me” The parrot replied, “Yes.” Relieved, the burglar asked, “What is your name?” The parrot said, “Clarence.” The burglar said, “That’s a stupid name for a parrot. What idiot named you Clarence?” The parrot answered, “the same idiot that named the rottweiler Jesus.” Once upon a time there were three bears. At breakfast time they decided to take a walk in the woods to let their porridge cool. When they arrived back they were surprised. Daddy bear said “Who’s been eating my porridge” Mummy bear said “Who’s been eating my porridge” Baby bear said “Never mind about the porridge. Who’s nicked the TV?” Two cows were out in a field eating grass One cow turns to the other cow and says, “Moooooo!”“Hey”, the other cow replies.... “I was just about to say the same thing!” A man in a cinema notices what looks like a cat sitting next to him. “Are you a cat?” asked the man, surprised. “Yes,” said the cat. “What are you doing at the movies?” The cat replied, “Well, I liked the book.” And finally, we’ve conducted a survey among dog lovers and these are the five main reasons they prefer dogs to cats... 1. Dogs will tilt their heads and try to understand every word you say. Cats will ignore you and take a nap. 2. When you come home from work, your dog will be happy and lick your face. The cat will still be mad at you for leaving in the first place. 3. A dog knows when you’re sad and he’ll try to comfort you. Cats don’t care how you feel as long as you remember where the tin opener is. 4. Dogs will bring you your slippers, while Cats will drop a dead mouse in them. 5. Dogs will wake you up if the house is on fire. Cats will quietly sneak out the back door.

Football
THE DEFENCE IS WONDERFUL, BUT ‘BORO NEED TO GET THE BALANCE RIGHT
I
t would be easy to point to the statistics of ‘Boro’s first nine games and suggest they are a testament to the often criticised defensive tactics that Tony Pulis is frequently labelled with. While nine games with only three goals conceded is a superb way to build a strong winning foundation, however, only eleven scored in the same period suggests that we must have been playing very, very defensively. That’s simply not true, though, and there have been numerous spurned opportunities that would have seen us almost out of sight in the league had they been taken. The worst aspect of the figures to date is the one that shows blank sheets in three of our last four games. Could it be coincidence that eight of our goals came in the first four games when Pulis was forced to abandon his favoured 4-4-2 formation and play with three at the back, because things have obviously changed since he reverted to that preferred format. Perhaps the other thing that has changed since that great start is that he has also stopped using the young lads in favour of the signings made in the late stages of the transfer window. Only one win in the last four games doesn’t make great reading yet we are still joint top with Leeds at the time of writing and that is certainly something we would have
taken at the start of the season. The optimist in me says that the new players will take time to bed in and Pulis has tinkered with the starting line-up as he tries to find the winning formula from what he now admits is a squad that has strength in depth. George Saville has already looked a great acquisition but with such strong numbers in the midfield department we are still playing with only one striker up front on his own. Perhaps the most irritating thing about that is that when we are chasing a win in the last quarter of the game we always see a second striker waiting to be introduced only to find he is actually replacing the first so the safety first status quo is maintained. But looking ahead to the October fixtures definitely gives us a great chance to keep up our promising start to the season. Home games against Forest, Rotherham and Derby and visits to Rotherham and Sheffield Wednesday can’t possibly fill anyone with dread as none of those teams have shown any consistency so far this term. On the other hand we visited Norwich when they only had one win out of six and entertained a Swansea side that had only won once in seven and the result was a single point. Norwich have since gone on to win their next two games as well so It shows that in this league you can’t take anything for granted and the team has to put in the

hard miles to get the kind of results we all want. It’s always said that an average of three points at home and one from away games will see you pretty much up there at the end of the season and so far we’ve just about managed to do that. It’s amazing how much difference two wins in a row make, though, so let’s hope that can be achieved over the next few weeks. At the time of writing we are heading to Preston for the next round of the EFL cup and once again that will give Tony Pulis the opportunity to give the new boys a run out. Hopefully, though, he will still give some of the younger element the chance to again show how much potential they can offer us. And while this particular competition may not be a real priority in a season where promotion is the most vital target, who can forget that fantastic afternoon in Cardiff when we picked up the first - and only - bit of major silverware in our history? We can but dream!
