In The Garden
C
ut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example) They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease. Clean out the greenhouse Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place
down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free! Drain and lag... Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts. Prepare your soil for next year For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will
PAGE 14 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers
break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.

LANDSCAPES DRIVEWAY & PATIO SPECIALIST
Planting Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed. Rake fallen leaves Fallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (two in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and free home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.

Motoring
BUYING OR LEASING, WHICH IS BEST?
T
here has been a dramatic swing in TV motor advertising over the past few years with a great deal of emphasis now being put on the option to lease a car instead of buying one. Car leasing used to be relatively unheard of in the UK, despite its huge popularity in the US where one in four cars are owned through personal leasing. It is, however, now becoming increasingly popular over here, and is just another example of the current trend of paying most household bills (phones, car tax, gas and electricity and Council Tax for instance) on a month-by-month basis. But with new car sales again rising this year and the length of time between changing cars becoming increasingly shorter, many are considering leasing as the ideal way to constantly own a new car while paying less. But is car leasing really the best way to finance your vehicle? We’ve taken a look at the facts and present them here. Car leasing - or Personal Contract Hire (PCH) - is where you lease a car for a set number of years at a fixed price and then hand it back to the leaser at the end. It provides you with relatively care-free motoring without the depreciation risks associated with traditional ownership. PCH is an alternative to PCP or HP, which incorporate
the depreciation of the car, or the cost of the car in total. This is because with PCP or HP, you will own the car at the end of the term of payments, whereas with PCH, you simply hand the car back. One big benefit is that it adheres to your budget with a choice of either a new or used car and includes full term Road Fund Licence. Many leasing companies also offer you the option of a full maintenance package so you can again budget in advance with no nasty and expensive surprises when things go wrong. And despite the initial term of the lease, you can easily upgrade your car if your circumstances improve. So whether you lease or buy is very dependent on your personal circumstances and choice. For those of you to whom having the latest model and registration number is an important factor in your life choices, then leasing is probably more appealing as you can change your car more frequently while maintaining the same affordable monthly payments. The disadvantage is that it will never actually be yours! So if actually owning your own car is your ultimate ambition and you are consequently happy to keep it for a longer period between changes, then buying is probably the best option for you. So let’s examine the comparative pros and cons... Car buying advantages include... cost of insurance
PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers
See Page 30 for our Index of Advertisers will reduce as the car becomes less valuable; you are building a degree of equity because the car will eventually be ‘all yours’ and can be used as a trade in when replaced; any monthly payments will stop once the car is yours and that happy circumstance will remain as long as you wish to keep it; there are no limitations on the amount of mileage you undertake; you can modify/accessorise to your heart’s content. The disadvantages, though, are as follows: the car will depreciate in value the longer you keep it; maintenance costs will undoubtedly rise as it gets older; initial deposit and monthly payments could well be much more than leasing; there are always doubts about buying somebody else’s used vehicle. Car Leasing advantages include; very small or sometimes no down payment; constant monthly payments for which you have initially budgeted; relatively easy to organise even if you have a poor credit rating but substantially more advantageous leasing rate availability the better your credit history; low maintenance costs because of the reasonable length of the warranty agreements that accompany leasing; no worries about depreciation; if the car is used for a business
then payments can be tax deductable. To its disadvantage, however: you will never own a car; you are stuck with the agreement even if your circumstances worsen; there is often a penalty clause if a certain amount of miles are surpassed; you may be charged at the end of the lease for any damage or worsening condition the car has accrued over your lease period. So while the pros and cons of the two systems seem somewhat similar, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the argument is that judged on a three year comparison leasing was found to be cheaper. Over a ten year period, however, buying was considerably less expensive as the benefits of ownership increased the longer the car was kept. In the end, of course, a lot depends on your circumstances at the time of needing a car. There is also, though, a degree of vanity in the desire to always want a new car because it is viewed - not as a method of getting safely and conveniently from A to B - but as some kind of status symbol. It really is all a matter of personal taste! Photo: ‘Just how much is always having the latest car worth to you?’

Healthy Eating BROCCOLI AND TOFU STIR FRY
I
f you fancy noodles, instead of reaching for a manufactured pot noodle which has very little nutrients, try this recipe which includes broccoli (full of vitamins, iron, calcium and fibre) and tofu (containing iron, calcium, protein and essential amino acids). To make it a quick recipe, steam the broccoli while frying the tofu, then while stir frying and combining the ingredients below cook the noodles. Ingredients 2 tablespoons veg oil, 2 cloves garlic, 1 inch fresh ginger cut into matchsticks, 150g fried tofu, 2 tablespoons light soy sauce, 1 cup chopped broccoli, including sliced stalk, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, dessertspoon cornflour mixed with 2 tablespoons water, egg or rice noodles. Chop the broccoli and thinly slice the broccoli stalk (after cutting off outer hard part) then steam it until almost soft. Cut tofu into ½ inch cubes and fry in a non stick pan until lightly browned.
Take broccoli out of pan and put aside, then briefly swish the cooked tofu in the hot water from the broccoli. Take it out and put it aside with the broccoli. Put your water on to boil for the noodles. Chop garlic and ginger. Put veg oil in a frying pan and cook garlic & ginger on medium heat for a few minutes. Add the broccoli, tofu, soy sauce, salt, sugar and sesame oil. Add cornflour mixture and stir until it thickens (add more water if you want the sauce thinner). Serve with cooked noodles (or stir noodles in and mix. ‘Healthy Eating’ courtesy of Sue Lorrimer.

THE POWER OF WORDS REALLY CAN RESOLVE AWKWARD SITUATIONS!
S
ometimes, even the most difficult situations can be resolved with just a few cleverly chosen and well expressed words. Here are a few wonderful examples...
I recently picked up a hitch-hiker. He seemed like a nice enough bloke but once he was in the car I realised he had terrible body odour and immediately regretted giving him a lift. After a couple of miles he said he was grateful for the lift but asked me if I wasn’t afraid that he might be a serial killer? I told him that the odds of two serial killers being in the same car at the same time was extremely unlikely. Fortunately he jumped out the next time I had to stop! An elderly man in Queensland had owned a large property for several years. He had a dam in one of the lower paddocks where he had planted mango and avocado trees. The dam had been fixed up for swimming when it was built and he also had some picnic tables placed there in the shade of the fruit trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the dam to look it over, as he hadn’t been there for a while. He grabbed a 10 litre bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the dam, he heard voices shouting and laughing. As he came closer he saw it was four young women skinny-dipping in his dam. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, ‘We know why you’re here and we’re not coming out until you leave.’ The old man frowned and said,’ Maam, I didn’t come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or try to make you get out of the dam naked.’ Holding the bucket up he said, ‘I’m only here to feed the crocodiles.’ Moral: Old men may walk slowly, but they can still think fast. A smarty-pants London lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a Glasgow cop. He thinks that he’s smarter than the cop because he is a lawyer from London and is certain that he has a better education then any Jock cop. He
decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Glasgow cop’s expense!! Glasgow cop says, “ Licence and registration, please.” London Lawyer says, “What for?” Glasgow cop says, “Ye didnae come to a complete stop at the stop sign.” London Lawyer says, “I slowed down, and no one was coming.”Glasgow cop says, “Ye still didnae come to a complete stop. Licence and registration, please.”London Lawyer says, “What’s the difference?” Glasgow cop says, “The difference is, ye haff tae come to a complete stop, that’s the law, Licence and registration, please!” London Lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I’ll give you my licence and registration and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don’t give me the ticket.” Glasgow cop says, “Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir.” The London Lawyer exits his vehicle. The Glasgow cop takes out his baton and starts beating the living daylights out of the lawyer and then says, “Dae ye want me to stop, or just slow doon?” One evening, after the honeymoon, Tom was working on his motorcycle in the garage. His new wife was standing there by the bench watching him. After a long period of silence she finally said, “Honey, I’ve just been thinking, now that we are married, maybe it’s time you quit spending so much of your time out here in your garage. You probably should also consider selling your Harley and all your welding equipment along with your gun collection, your fishing gear, the boat and all those stupid model airplanes, plus dump that vintage hot rod sports car and your home brewing equipment.” Tom got a horrified look on his face. She said, “Darling, what’s wrong?”He replied, “There for a minute, you were starting to sound like my ex-wife!” “Exwife!?” she screamed, “YOU NEVER TOLD ME YOU WERE MARRIED BEFORE!” Tom replied, “I wasn’t.” The right words really can be so important!

IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN!
I
’ve been a ‘Boro fan long enough to know there was a certain inevitability that having lost all six of their away games so far this season Rotherham would come to top-of-the-table ‘Boro and get something out of the fixture. That they only got one point was good fortune from our point of view as they had easily the best chance of the game. So once again we flattered to deceive and failed to take full advantage of an excellent opportunity to extend our lead at the top. How important that is will be defined by the situation at the end of November because the forthcoming fixtures can hardly be defined as easy. Two home games against Derby County and Wigan are combined with away trips to Stoke City, Brentford and Preston, and having failed to despatch lowly Rotherham at home you can’t see any of those being a ‘gimme.’ We’re therefore going to have to hope that whoever Pulis plays up front can find their shooting boots pretty quickly. Right now there’s only six points between the top two (Leeds and ‘Boro) and ninth (Blackburn Rovers) in the table so it’s pretty important that we get positive results across November. The one grain of hope in all this is that with
the exception of Norwich there doesn’t seem to be any other team showing consistency with everyone around us dropping points on a regular basis. I say with the exception of Norwich because their form has been excellent since beating ‘Boro at Carrow Road with 5 wins and a draw from their last seven games. The only other team that could be evolving as a real threat is Frank Lampard’s Derby County who, at the time of writing, have just despatched the other potential league leaders West Brom. As I write we are looking forward to hosting Derby at the Riverside this Saturday and once again my long experience as a ‘Boro fan tells me not to be too surprised if we reverse the Rotherham situation and beat them convincingly. In truth, it’s just about impossible to forecast what’s going to happen from week to week in the Championship because the real attraction of this division is that anyone really can beat anyone. It’s an amazingly strong league and there is no doubt that once the FA Cup proper begins there will be Championship sides that comfortably despatch some of their Premier rivals in what will be considered ‘shock results.’ The real truth is that - apart from the top financially benefited eight or so teams - the

gap between the bottom of the Premiership and the top of the Championship continues to narrow. Over the past few seasons promoted teams like Burnley, Bournemouth, Brighton and Watford have developed into accepted Premiership sides that can compete with the top teams. Conversely, teams like Norwich, West Brom, Stoke and Birmingham that have been regular fixtures in the Premiership in the recent past are now accepted residents of the Championship. To be honest, you can also include ‘Boro in that list but let’s hope that by the end of the season Tony Pulis has been able to restore us to the elevated position where many of us feel we belong. The good thing about having a manager as experienced and knowledgeable as Pulis means that if we do go up this season there is infinitely more chance of us staying there than there was under Karanka. We can only continue to dream!
