eep on with the dead heading and watering of all hanging baskets and containers. Adding feed once a week will extend the flowering season and produce better plants. Cut back the foliage from hardy geraniums once they have finished flowering as this should give a second flush of flowers later. Cut back the foliage and stems of herbaceous plants, such as dicentra, when they start to die back but do not cut off the flower heads of ornamental grasses as these will give winter interest. Dead head border plants such as roses, penstemons and bedding to extend their flowering into the autumn. Prune climbing and rambler roses once they have finished flowering unless they are a repeat flowering variety or have attractive hips. Towards the end of the month sow hardy annual seeds directly into the borders to over winter and produce earlier blooms the following spring. Keep on top of the weeds with regular hoeing of annual weeds but use a
glyphosate based weedkiller for perennial weeds to kill the roots as well as the leaves. Give hedges their final trim of the year. Top up water features and ponds and aerate the water during very hot weather.
Lawn Mow lightly and frequently and leave the clippings on the lawn to act as a mulch in hot weather. Do not feed grass at this time of year.
Fruit and Vegetables Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted. Tie in new growth on blackberries and other hybrid berries. Continually pick summer fruit as soon as it ripens. Any surplus can be frozen or made into jam. Sow quick maturing salad crops such as lettuce, radish, rocket etc. Cut back flowered herbs like marjoram to get a second flush. Pot up some herbs to bring indoors for use during the autumn and winter. Continue to pick mature crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and

LOCAL ANSWER beans to encourage further fruits and to prevent toughness. Put straw or cardboard underneath marrows to keep them off the earth which can cause rotting. Lift onions, shallots and garlic and leave to dry.
Wildlife Birds still need feeding at this time of year. Hanging bird feeders are best placed over a hard surface such as paving and decking so that any dropped seeds can be easily swept up. This avoids the problem of vermin. If you have a spare piece of bare soil, leave it to become a dust bath for the birds in dry weather. If you are lucky enough to have a hedgehog in your vicinity try to encourage it into your garden by putting out some food. Do not put out bread and milk but instead some cat or dog food. Finally if you have any spare time and there is a fairly long dry spell forecast, give your fences and sheds a coat of preserver.

I
n any popular car sector it’s almost as important to continually upgrade the better performers as it is to introduce new ones. In that respect Peugeot have recently done an excellent job with their perennially successful 208 model with an upgrade that should rightfully maintain its highly competitive place in the Super-mini class.
Under the bonnet, the Company has been working for a number of years on its new PureTech engine range and now claims that the 1.2 version has a similar performance to the 1.6 while still providing the economy of

These include 16 and 17 inch alloy wheel designs, sports seats with contrasting stitching, 3 or 5 door body styles, textured external paint, dashboard styles and coloured door handles. The interior is both well designed and well built with good quality materials. A fairly novel dashboard and instrument panel sits above a rather dinky steering wheel so you look at the dials over the top of the wheel, rather than through it. It works reasonably well, but some drivers may find the wheel actually obscures the instruments. Most versions also have DAB radio, a rear parking aid, automatic headlights and a dimming rear view mirror. Peugeot claim a top speed of 118mph but in an era of restricted speeds that should be somewhat irrelevant. Headroom is surprisingly good for a relatively small hatchback and four adults or two adults and three children can be adequately accommodated. Power-wise, the 208 is offered with a wide range of engines. Small-capacity threecylinder petrols are all the rage at the moment and Peugeot has made sure the 208 is included in that premise with 1.0 and 1.2-litre versions both capable of over 60mpg. Road tax, meanwhile, is a maximum of £20 or even free on some versions. Peugeot also has a reputation for building good diesel engines and there is a choice of these,

too. The 1.6-litre HDi probably has the best pulling power and with excellent fuel economy and free road tax the 1.6 Blue HDI 75 would appear to be the best choice. The most economical combustion engine in the world to date, it offers a remarkable 94.2mpg and emits just 79g/km of CO2. For that economy there obviously has to be sacrifices, though, and it takes more than 13 seconds to reach 62mph. At the moment the 208 is Peugeot’s best selling car with more than 32,000 units sold in the UK last year. Over a million of this popular supermini have been produced since 2012 and this new version looks well set to continue that demand well into the future. For the smaller car enthusiast it’s represents an ideal purchase!

IT’S ALMOST HERE...
S
ince at the time of writing we’ve had five pre-season friendly games and scored only three goals the tendency would be to bemoan the fact that the same old deficiencies we experienced throughout last season are still there in abundance. While that attitude could be fully understood, however, what we should look at is that we’ve been without the departed Patrick Bamford and Jelle Vossen who between them scored a very high percentage of our goals last season and neither has so far been replaced (Even with them last season the total was pretty paltry.) Excitingly, though, we all know the ‘Boro hierarchy are busting a gut to bring in two proven goal scorers in Christian Stuani and Jordan Rhodes and hopefully that means things are about to change. Let’s pray it all happens before the visit to Preston on August 8th. The summer break has seen a fair bit of transfer activity on Teesside, though, and if we are to trust in Aitor we can expect some good things to come in the opening few matches. It’s great to see Tomas Kalas back (he never really left but it was to our detriment in the Wembley final that his loan spell had to end prematurely. I for one think his presence would have made a big difference.) Perhaps the nicest aspect of his ‘return’ is that it is with so much enthusiasm and exactly the same can be said for the tremendous piece of business that has seen Stewie Downing come
home. Much was spoken last season about the wonderful team spirit in the dressing room and there is little doubt that these two acquisitions can only add to the camaraderie that has developed among the players. As far as the team’s attacking options are concerned the arrival of Downing coupled with the signing of Diego Fabbrini will give much more attacking and creative options than we had last season. Grant Leadbitter and Adam Clayton both played wonderfully in midfield but they would both admit that - despite Grant’s excellent personal scoring tally - they played a much bigger part in giving us the best defensive record in the division that they did in trying to improve the scoring statistics. It obviously means that Karanka is going to have to find a balance that will maintain the healthy ‘goals against’ column while ensuring that we can match our rivals on the goal scoring front. If you think about the two Leeds games, the two Blackburn games and the Watford home match just an extra goal in each game would have seen us achieve automatic promotion. So you don’t need to be a genius to see where the priorities have to lie for the forthcoming nine or ten months. Wembley is now a distant memory but it should nevertheless act as the catalyst that makes everyone concerned with the club determined not to be part of the play-off scenario. Automatic promotion has to be the only aim.

LOCAL ANSWER The bookies obviously think we can do it because at the moment they have us as second favourites to win the title at 7/1 (behind Derby County at 6/1) and a paltry 8/13 to finish in the top six. It doesn’t matter how confident you are that’s hardly worth risking your hard earned cash on. One wonderful result of last season’s brilliant effort is that season tickets have risen dramatically ensuring that we will start the season with many more seats filled. The crowd and the sensational atmosphere they created in the last two home games showed just how easily the old times could return. The quarter and semi final home legs in Europe were easily the best two nights I have ever experienced in my sixty odd years of watching ‘Boro and I really can’t wait for many more such occasions. That’s probably being superoptimistic at this stage but there is a belief and optimism emanating from the Riverside that suggests it is not without foundation. Simply can’t wait for August the eighth. Have a great season!

SALMON FISHCAKES WITH SALSA VERDE INGREDIENTS 600g/1lb 5oz salmon fillet salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 big floury potatoes, cooked 1 medium red onions, finely diced 2 handfuls chopped parsley 1 lemon, juice only flour, for dusting
For the Salsa Verde 25g/2oz white breadcrumbs 1 tbsp of red wine vinegar basil, small bunch flat-leaved parsley, small bunch 2 garlic cloves, chopped ½ tsp salt and freshly ground black pepper 60ml/4fl oz olive oil 1 tbsp salted capers, rinsed

METHOD This is a bit different as the salsa verde is mixed into the fishcakes but go with it, they taste amazing. To make the Salsa Verde, soak the breadcrumbs in the vinegar briefly, then put into a food processor with the herbs, garlic and seasoning. Process briefly to a coarse paste. With the motor running, add the olive oil a little at a time, until it is all incorporated. Add the capers and blitz for 2 seconds (literally press the switch on and off, to preserve the texture). Next cook the potato and mash them before placing in a bowl and allowing to cool. Poach the salmon for about 5 mins in a

pan of simmering milk or water before turning off the heat and leaving in the pan with the lid on for a further five mins. Strain the liquid and flake the fish into the bowl with the potato, add finely chopped onion, parsley, the salsa verde, lemon juice and seasoning. Mix well, at this stage it might be useful to fry off a small piece to taste for seasoning. If the mixture is too wet add some flour or breadcrumbs; shape the mixture into 4 fishcakes and dust with flour. Place in the fridge for half an hour, this will help them keep their shape when cooking. Shallow fry until golden brown on both sides, serve your Salmon fishcakes with salsa verde on a bed of salad.
