A Garden Fence That Requires Virtually No Maintenance...

W

elcome to Colourfence Teesside, a family-run business who absolutely love the Colourfence garden fencing solution. What’s not to like about a fence that requires virtually no maintenance apart from an occasional hose down (unless of course it rains), is 130mph gust proof, never needs treating, doesn’t rot, warp, peel or fade and always looks stunning. It has a 25 year guarantee and once it’s fitted you can enjoy looking at it year after year. Available in a range of colours to compliment any garden environment, both sides are identical, making Colourfence the most attractive garden fencing solution for you and your neighbour. Colourfence is made from Colorbond steel, one of the most advanced steel

products in the world. Beneath the surface, world leading technology is hard at work delivering long life anti corrosion performance. First a base of Zincalume steel ensures outstanding anti corrosion performance to which a conversion layer is applied to enhance coating adhesion. Then an epoxy primer is applied to the surface before a final durable exterior grade coloured top coat is baked on. Available in heights of up to 2.1m, Colourfence fences keep your world inside and the outside world outside. Infills are securely locked into the post and rails as a deterrent to intruders, and a full range of lockable gates is available. Personal Service from Sentry Security Sentry Security was founded in 1992 and was one of the first companies in the area to apply for and achieve SSAIB accreditation. Owner John Davidson started working in the industry in 1997 and joined the Sentry Security team in 2010. John took over the company this year on the 1st of March and being a local accredited company he feels he can offer a more personal service to his customers than the large national companies. He knows his customers by name and they know him. Being SSAIB approved is an important thing - not just for the company but also for his customers - It means John installs quality equipment carrying a higher level of insurance than non-approved companies. It also means he is inspected by the SSAIB every year to ensure installations are to the correct standards. John is a quick adopter of new technologies.

The introduction of reliable wirefree technology has been an important step forward for the industry. Sentry have alarm panels that you can control through your phone and HD CCTV systems you can view from anywhere round the world. Sentry also still install wired alarms although most people are opting for wireless or a combination of the two. Each building is different as are the customers needs so each design is tailored to their requirements. Sentry cover domestic and commercial work, from systems that just activate an outside sounder, to systems that contact a central station who can notify keyholders or emergency services of an activation. They also service and maintain alarms and CCTV equipment. John looks forward to growing the company and offering a quality local service for all his customers, past, present and future.

Have you had problems with your alarm after a power cut? Book a one-off service for £70 plus £15 for a new backup battery

In The Garden

I

t’s a good idea to keep a close eye on the weather during April. Frosts are still common, and many plants and flowers may need protection in the form of fleece or cloches. Hopefully, the ground will not be too wet and so now is a good time to finish off digging over your plot in preparation for all the vegetables you are going to grow. As the weather gets warmer, the weeds will grow in earnest. Regular weeding, before they become established, is important. Vegetable Garden To Do’s Start an asparagus bed - Early April is not too late to start an asparagus bed. Make sure the ground is prepared ready for the arrival of the asparagus crowns as you will need to plant them shortly after they arrive. The crowns must not be allowed to dry out. For this reason, don’t buy them from a garden centre where they have been kept on a shelf for several weeks. Earth up first early potatoes and plant out second early and maincrop varieties Protect first early potato shoots against frost by earthing up as they break through the soil. Second earlies and maincrop seed potatoes can now be planted. Chitting the seed potatoes beforehand may improve yields, but is not essential. Keep on top of weeding - It is much easier to deal with weeds whilst they are small.

Pick them out by hand or use a trowel or hoe. Doing this regularly will mean a weed free plot, and nowhere for pests (especially slugs) to hide. Put up bean supports - Put in place wigwams or rows of canes ready for your runner and climbing french beans. As the ground is soft, it will be easy to push the canes into the soil. Sow vegetable seed outdoors - Many seeds won’t germinate until the soil temperature has reached about 7ºC, but if the weather has been warm you can start sowing carrots, broad beans, parsnips, spinach, beetroot, peas, mangetout, lettuce, radish, scorzonera, swiss chard, rocket, runner beans, salsify, sorrel, sprouting broccoli, swede, and turnips. Sow vegetable seed indoors in trays or pots - Start sowing indoors, or in a greenhouse or coldframe, celeriac, kale, parsley, leeks, brussel sprouts, summer cabbage, cauliflower, lemon grass, comfrey, calabrese, peas, mangetout, squash and pumpkins. Towards the end of the month start sowing sweetcorn, cucumber, courgette, french and runner beans, ready for planting out mid May. If you have a greenhouse that they can grow in then you are not too late to start chillies. Plant onion and shallot sets - If you have space, now is the time to plant onion sets. White onions are relatively cheap in the

PAGE 10 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

LOCAL ANSWER shops but red onions and shallots are much more expensive, so it’s worth thinking about growing these. Harden off plants - Seedlings that have been started indoors but are to be grown outside can be hardened off on warm still days. Place them outside during the day, but take them in again late afternoon, and do this for about a week or so. This way they will get used to the cooler conditions before being planted outside. Protect plants from frost - If a frost has been forecast, protect plants using horticultural fleece or cloches. Divide herbaceous herbs - Herbaceous herbs, such as chive, oregano, mint and tarragon can be dug up and divided, just before proper growth begins. Divide the root clump, re-plant and water well. Fruit Garden To Do’s Clean up your strawberry beds or pots Remove any dead or damaged leaves and old runners from the plants. If the plants are getting older, thin out the smaller crowns leaving 3 to 4 crowns per plant. Apply a fresh layer of straw if using as a mulch. Apply a mulch to soft fruits - All soft fruits, such as strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, blackcurrants, and gooseberries will benefit from a mulch. Garden compost, leaf mould, organic manure, straw, hay and spent mushroom compost can all be used. Hay is more beneficial than straw as it breaks down more easily and releases more nutrients into the soil. Apply an acidic mulch to blueberries and cranberries - These are acid loving plants, so mulch with an 8cm (3in) layer of acidic material such as bark or old pine needles (kept from your christmas tree!). Prune stone fruit trees - To avoid risk of infection, stone fruits, such as plum, cherry, peach, nectarine and apricot should only be pruned during the growing season. Prune late April, when the plants are in leaf and after flowering. Immediately seal all cuts greater than 1cm (½in) with wound paint.

THE NEW HONDA JAZZ RELIABILITY PERSONIFIED!

he Honda Jazz has been an exceptionally popular small car since its introduction in 2002, not only because it is an attractive little car that offers terrific space but more especially because of its tremendous reliability record. Honda have now launched their third generation, 2016 version which is set to create even more interest as it offers even more refinement and efficiency than its predecessor while still retaining the exceptional interior space for such a small car. A revolutionary new design includes high-rise windows, a sharper grill and cleverly designed creases that break up the more elongated redesigned body, while a choice of attractive and interesting new colours extend the Jazz’s external transformation. The improvements certainly don’t stop there, but having said that the interior is

without doubt the best selling point. It’s spacious, beautifully constructed from high quality materials and equipment provided as standard has also seen useful and attractive additions.

Unlike many of its peers the car has an excellent entertainment system that’s easy to use and - if selected - a sat-nav system that gives really clear instructions. We’ve already applauded the space provided but room for both passengers

PAGE 18 | Please mention ‘The Local Answer Ingleby Barwick’ when calling advertisers

LOCAL ANSWER

and luggage is second to none. The car, in fact, offers as much rear legroom as the Mercedes S-Class. At 354 litres, Jazz’s boot has grown as well. It’s much bigger than any rivals offer – the Kia Rio has 288 litres and the Renault Clio is a bit closer with 300 litres. The Jazz comes with Magic seats in the rear that not only sit flat, but also have bases that can be folded up to carry taller items. When the rear seats are down, boot space increases to an impressive 1,314 litres, beaten only by the bigger Nissan Note with its 1,495 litres. Entry-level equipment is plentiful with air-conditioning, automatic lights, DAB radio and Bluetooth phone connectivity all included. The SE model is even better, coming as it does with the easy-to-use new seven-inch infotainment system, parking sensors and alloy wheels. The previous Jazz offered two engine options but they have been replaced with a 1.3-litre petrol that produces 104hp and 91lb ft of torque. However, without the help of a turbocharger the engine needs to be worked hard to keep up with traffic and that means lots of gear changes if you choose the manual gearbox. The good thing is that it’s a six speed and is geared for cruising. Honda promises it will return fuel economy of 56.6mpg. The car is also offered with an automatic CVT gearbox. Annual road tax is £30 for the manual and £20 for the automatic. Overall, then, the new Honda Jazz is a very spacious city car that although neither the fastest nor the cheapest in its class nevertheless offers a broad range of abilities and is extremely well equipped. Like previous versions of the Jazz, the latest upgrade is based very much on practicality and versatility, and its price

tag is still reasonably competitive. What’s more, it should prove to be one of the most reliable cars it’s possible to own. It’s not the last word in design or flair but if you are more interested in reliability it’s worth giving the Jazz some serious consideration.

The most amusing aspect of that is that they don’t really mean their actions to be either of these things and that makes them even more enjoyable. Here are some great examples! To mark her hundredth birthday a lady was interviewed by a journalist from the local paper. ‘To what,’ he asked, ‘do you attribute your longevity?’ ‘Well,’ said the old lady, ‘I think it’s because I decided when I was very young to never get involved in any kind of argument and I’ve stuck to that ever since so I’ve never had any stress at all.’ The reporter was sceptical. ‘Surely there must be some other explanation,’ he said. ‘Exercise, sensible diet, genetics perhaps. I can’t believe you’ve lived to a hundred just by not arguing.’ ‘You know,’ said the old lady, you might just be right.’ An elderly man came back from the doctor looking worried. ‘What’s the matter pet?’ asked his wife. ‘Well,’ said her husband, ‘the doctor told me I had to take one of these pills every day for the rest of my life.’ ‘Well that’s not too bad,’ said the wife, trying to cheer him up. ‘It is,’ he replied. ‘The doctor only gave me 24.’ An elderly man called in at the police station and told the duty officer he thought his wife was slowly poisoning him. ‘She’s doing it slowly, but surely,’ said the old man. ‘What should I do? ‘Don’t do anything yet,’ said the officer, ‘but be very vigilant about what you eat. In the meantime I’ll have a word with your wife.’ Two days later the policeman called the husband and said ‘I’ve spoken to your wife. In fact, I spoke to her for two and a half hours on the phone and then she came down to the police station and I talked

to her for another four hours. Do you want my advice?’ ‘Yes, please,’ said the old man anxiously. ‘If I were you,’ said the policeman, ‘I’d take the poison!’ An old man went to confession. ‘Father,’ he said, ‘I’m eighty two, married with seven children and ten grandchildren and last night I strayed and made love to two twenty year old women. Twice!’ ‘I see,’ said the priest,’ and when was the last time you came to confession?’ ‘Never, father’ replied the old man. ‘I’m Jewish.’ ‘Then why are you telling me?’ asked the priest. ‘I’m telling everybody!’ An old lady went to the doctor with a list of complaints about her deteriorating health. Her joints were stiff, her back ached, her vision was on the decline and she had a weak bladder. ‘I’m afraid,’ said the doctor, ‘that you have to accept that as you get older things begin to go downhill. After all, who wants to live to be a hundred?’ The woman replied ‘Anyone who’s ninety nine!’ A couple who had been married for forty years were entertaining friends at a dinner party when the conversation turned to marriage counselling. ‘We’ll never need that,’ said the wife, confidently. ‘George and I have a great relationship. You see it’s all a question of education.’ ‘How?’ asked one of the friends. ‘Well,’ she continued, ‘at University George did a communications course and I studied drama. So he communicates really well and I act like I’m listening.’ An elderly man went to the doctor and announced he was certain he was suffering from a rare tropical disease. ‘But if you had that particular disease,’ said the doctor, ‘you wouldn’t know because there is no pain or discomfort associated with it.’ ‘I know,’ said the old man, ‘and those are exactly the symptoms I’ve got!’

STRANGE CONTRADICTIONS AND A COMPLETE LACK OF PROFESSIONALISM

T

he last couple of months have seen some strange contradictions at the Riverside with the ultimate professionalism displayed so far this season dissipating in a series of distasteful internal squabbles that have threatened to undermine everything Aitor Karanka has so far created. Outside of that supposedly turbulent meeting no one will ever really know what happened but the resulting walk out by the manager himself and the innuendos that were aimed mainly at Stewart Downing and Jordan Rhodes were – in contrast to the rest of the season – extremely unprofessional It would be easy to suggest that all our troubles started – as so many have before at other clubs – with the January transfer window. I recently advised in these pages that ‘if it ain’t broke there’s no need to fix it’ and a fabulous December return suggested that everything was indeed in perfect working order. To then publicly announce at the beginning of January that the club was looking to add to the squad obviously led to unrest among

the players leading to a string of awful results throughout that month. Inevitably, the reinforcements we did bring in would seem to have upset the applecart somewhat and in the case of the Jordan Rhodes recruitment created a problem we really didn’t need. There was never going to be a way that Karanka could utilise both Rhodes and Nugent in his preferred formation so it has meant a constant chopping and changing amongst the front two that has seen a noticeable lack of confidence in both players in front of goal. At Rotherham and Charlton, for instance, the pair missed first half chances that – had they been playing regularly instead of just every other game – you would have put your money on them scoring. Both had one-on-one chances to beat the respective keepers and neither had the confidence or the sharpness to do it. In both cases I’m pretty sure a goal at that point would have meant completely different results. The Hull game probably couldn’t have come at a better time as they were also in the middle of a winless

LOCAL ANSWER run, but let’s be fair, neither showed any kind of Premiership quality that night until the last minute or so and the absolutely vital Nugent header that gave us the three points. It meant that after Wolves’ last minute equaliser at Burnley and the fact we have a game in hand on both them and Brighton means the onus is still on us. All we have to do is win our remaining games and we are definitely champions! Sounds easy, doesn’t it? The momentum the Hull win has given us and the chance the International break will give us to get some togetherness back in the squad could be the answers. With ‘Boro, though, you simply never know and all we can do is keep the old fingers crossed and back them to the hilt. Steve Gibson deserves to be watching Premiership football next year. Let’s hope we all are!

Recipe

RED VELVET CAKE CAKE INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 cups flour 2 cups sugar 1 Tablespoon cocoa 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil 1 cup buttermilk 1 Tablespoon vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 oz red food colouring

ingredients (oil, buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla and food colouring).

METHOD

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease and flour two eight inch cake pans. Lightly stir eggs in a medium bowl with a wire whisk. Stir in remaining liquid

Whisk until blended. Set aside. In a separate large bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, and baking soda). Stir really well with another whisk. Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients bowl, with a hand-mixer mix on medium-high speed for one minute or until completely combined. Pour into cake pans, and then lightly drop cake pans on the counter a few times to release any air bubbles.

After about 10 minutes, remove cakes from pans and let cool completely on a wire rack.
